The only studio creation of the group. The history of the group began as "Hellhound" in the late 60s - early 70s in the capital of the Canadian province of British Columbia, Victoria. Later changed its name to "Fable" and in 1974 recorded this album, which has influences of "Cream", Jimi Hendrix, "Grand Funk Railroad", Robin Trower, "Deep Purple", "Uriah Heep", "Led Zeppelin", "Black Sabbath" and "Sir Lord Baltimore". Nic dziwnego, że biorąc pod uwagę dotychczasowe osiągnięcia zespołu, nie jest to typowy album Tech-Death. Utalentowany duet gitarzysty i inżyniera dźwięku Norberta Müllera oraz wokalisty, gitarzysty i kompozytora Floriana Engelke'a prześcignął samych siebie na Ontology of Nought! Epickie utwory o długości od 10 do 18 minut łączą się w spójną całość, która zachwyca charakterystycznym technicznym rozmachem zespołu i progresywnym, kompozytorskim geniuszem. Imponująca obsada muzyków sesyjnych i gościnnych dodaje jeszcze więcej energii.



Ingurgitating Oblivion to bezsprzecznie jeden z najbardziej ambitnych zespołów u naszych zachodnich zabor… tego, sąsiadów. Niemcy od lat całkiem udanie poszerzają formułę technicznego death metalu, nie idąc przy tym na łatwiznę ani żadne kompromisy. A, no i nie zważają, czy ktokolwiek spoza zespołu ogarnia te ich pokręcone wizje. Nie powiem, takie aroganckie podejście, ignorujące możliwości i oczekiwania odbiorców, zawsze mi imponuje — tak jak zaimponował mi „Vision Wallows In Symphonies Of Light” — ale i ja czasami osiągam punkt wyrzygu, kiedy spektrum artyzmu jest zbyt szerokie.

Ontology Of Nought to kolejny krok Ingurgitating Oblivion na drodze do wykreowania jeśli nie oryginalnego, to przynajmniej rozpoznawalnego stylu. Idąc po swoje, zespół wyraźnie zredukował tutaj bezpośrednie wpływy Gorguts czy Ulcerate, za to wprowadził więcej zabaw z lajtowymi, choć wcale nie mniej skomplikowanymi dźwiękami, czyniąc materiał baaardzo rozbudowanym i nieprzewidywalnym. Owszem, grupa z równą swobodą porusza się w obu tych skrajnościach, ale całość byłaby jednak bardziej komunikatywna, gdyby te pomysły rozłożono na osobne (i krótsze) kawałki. Jeśli dobrze łapię ideę, Ontology Of Nought pomyślano tak, żeby był albumem niezwykle złożonym i bardzo wymagającym, z którym trzeba się pomęczyć, który powoli odsłania swoje atuty i właściwie nigdy do końca nie daje się rozgryźć. Muzycy Ingurgitating Oblivion zadbali o to, żeby „się działo”, żeby było gęsto, różnorodnie i nieszablonowo — co naturalnie doceniam — bo przez około 55 minut tego materiału dostajemy sporo dowodów ich nieskrępowanej wyobraźni i ogromnych umiejętności. Niemcy potrafią zamieszać tak, że momentami nie wiadomo, co się dzieje, ale robią to z prawdziwą klasą, bo niezależnie od aktualnie uprawianego gatunku, wychodzi im to świetnie.

Tylko tego… jest jeden problem. Ja tu piszę o około 55 minutach, a wyświetlacz pokazuje ich aż 73… Czym zatem są te brakujące minuty? Ano, kurwa jego w dupę zapierdolona mać, niczym: jakiś ambient, przypadkowe dźwięki, gadka-szmatka albo po prostu nic. Dłuuugie fragmenty nica, które sztucznie rozciągają i tak już bardzo długie utwory (weźmy pierwszy z brzegu „Uncreation's Whirring Loom You Ply With Crippled Fingers”, który potrzebuje trzy i pół minuty, żeby w ogóle wystartować) i kompletnie zaburzają spójność płyty. Na „Vision Wallows In Symphonies Of Light” również występowały pewne okołoambientowe przeszkadzajki, ale było ich bez porównania mniej, a przez to tak nie doskwierały. Na Ontology Of Nought tego badziewia jest tyle, że każdorazowo doprowadza mnie do szału i nie pozwala w pełni cieszyć się zawartością „netto” płyty.

Czwarte dzieło Ingurgitating Oblivion brzmi znakomicie, jest cudnie zagrane (Lille Gruber odpierdala takie kosmosy, że kopara nie chce się podnieść z podłogi) i zawiera masę naprawdę kapitalnej muzyki. Niestety, nawet te wszystkie zalety zebrane do kupy nie są w stanie odwrócić mojej uwagi od koszmarnej wtopy z ambientowymi zapchajdziurami. Mogła być z tego płyta roku, tymczasem z bólem serca jestem zmuszony dać jej ledwie 7.

Ciężka artyleria wjechała. Bardzo ciężka. Oto przed Wami piąty album niemieckiego Ingurgitating Oblivion, projektu aktualnie dowodzonego przez Floriana Engelke, muzyka Of Trees And Orchids, grupy, na gruzach której Ingurgitating Oblivion powstało. Na przestrzeni ćwierćwiecza muzyka tego projektu sukcesywnie ewoluowała od dość gęstego i brutalnego, zdysonansowanego metalu śmierci w kierunkach coraz bardziej awangardowych. W 2017 wraz z dołączeniem do składu perkusisty Lille Grubera (Defeated Sanity), muzyka Niemców nabrał jeszcze większych rumieńców i odpłynęła w eksperymenty jeszcze mocniej, czego owocem był ostatni jak dotąd album „Visions Wallows In Symphonies Of Light” z tamtego roku, dowodzący, że ponad dwudziestominutowe kompozycje dla death metalu są niestraszne. „Ontology Of Nought” idzie jeszcze dalej – żadna z pięciu zamieszczonych tu kompozycji nie schodzi poniżej 10 minut. Panowie ze swoją inwencją twórczą idą tutaj jeszcze dalej zostawiając sobie coraz mniej pola na death metal, a pławiąc się w w naginaniu form i tekstur. Różnorodność dźwięków i paleta inspiracji, które tu usłyszymy sprawiłaby – jestem skłonny zaryzykować tą tezę w ciemno – że wyczekiwany tu i ówdzie nowy album Blood Incantation umoczony w „berlińskiej szkole” będzie będzie jak VW Passat w zestawieniu z Bugatti Chiron. Czego tu nie usłyszymy – krautrock, zheul, post-black, kolaże dźwiękowe z kosmosu rodem, brutalny death metal, skandynawska szkoła progrocka, muzyka bliskiego wschodu. Naprawdę dużo tu tego. Wykonane jest to brawurowo i perfekcyjnie, zagrane tak, że papcie spadają, tu nie ma chwili na zająknięcie czy błąd. Tylko chyba trochę tu tego wszystkiego za dużo. „Ontology Of Nought” kipi barokowym przepychem i balansuje na granicy swobodnej improwizacji, a w zasadzie jedną nogą już tam jest a drugą stara się przełożyć. Pije do tego, że brakuje tu punktów zaczepienia, jakiejś chwili, żeby tą muzyką podelektować się, a nie tylko podziwiać ją. Zawsze uważałem siebie za słuchacza, który lubi pewne przeładowanie formy, ponadprzeciętny warsztat wykonawczy i pewną skłonność do łamania konwencji. Tutaj jest tego aż nadto i jest to zrobione naprawdę ze smakiem. I bardzo bym życzył sobie, żeby ten muzyczny tygiel w swoich 73 minutach był tworem niemalże całkowicie instrumentalnym, bo partie wokalne nie dość, że są tu słabe, to i kompletnie niepotrzebne. A one przede wszystkim bardzo słabo, cicho zarejestrowane, blackowy skrzek brzmi jakby żaba dusiła się w sadzawce, growl jest kompletnie bezużyteczny, a okazjonalne, czyste wokale stylizowane na pre-heritagowego Akerfeldta dość blade. Warto też podkreślić, że tego typu wydawnictwa, które mają w sobie duży pierwiastek improwizacji niekoniecznie mają dużą „replay value”. Nie ukrywam, że cholernie szanuje wysiłek włożony w ten album, ale skłamałbym mówiąc, że jest to zestaw dźwięków, który zachęca mnie do ponownego sięgnięcia po te nagranie. Na pewno jest to płyta, którą warto przesłuchać, bo oferuje ona naprawdę dużo. W chuj dużo. Kto ile z tego wyniesie to kwestia indywidualna. Szczerze namawiam do przesłuchania jeśli nie boicie się wyzwań.

Nic dziwnego, że biorąc pod uwagę dotychczasowe osiągnięcia zespołu, nie jest to typowy album Tech-Death. Utalentowany duet gitarzysty i inżyniera dźwięku Norberta Müllera oraz wokalisty, gitarzysty i kompozytora Floriana Engelke'a prześcignął samych siebie na Ontology of Nought! Epickie utwory o długości od 10 do 18 minut łączą się w spójną całość, która zachwyca charakterystycznym technicznym rozmachem zespołu i progresywnym, kompozytorskim geniuszem. Imponująca obsada muzyków sesyjnych i gościnnych dodaje jeszcze więcej energii.



Ingurgitating Oblivion to bezsprzecznie jeden z najbardziej ambitnych zespołów u naszych zachodnich zabor… tego, sąsiadów. Niemcy od lat całkiem udanie poszerzają formułę technicznego death metalu, nie idąc przy tym na łatwiznę ani żadne kompromisy. A, no i nie zważają, czy ktokolwiek spoza zespołu ogarnia te ich pokręcone wizje. Nie powiem, takie aroganckie podejście, ignorujące możliwości i oczekiwania odbiorców, zawsze mi imponuje — tak jak zaimponował mi „Vision Wallows In Symphonies Of Light” — ale i ja czasami osiągam punkt wyrzygu, kiedy spektrum artyzmu jest zbyt szerokie.

Ontology Of Nought to kolejny krok Ingurgitating Oblivion na drodze do wykreowania jeśli nie oryginalnego, to przynajmniej rozpoznawalnego stylu. Idąc po swoje, zespół wyraźnie zredukował tutaj bezpośrednie wpływy Gorguts czy Ulcerate, za to wprowadził więcej zabaw z lajtowymi, choć wcale nie mniej skomplikowanymi dźwiękami, czyniąc materiał baaardzo rozbudowanym i nieprzewidywalnym. Jestem w kropce. Dosłownie. Bo nie wiem, jak słowami oddać to, jak wybitna jest twórczość tego zespołu (poza małym wyjątkiem...). Zespół został założony w 1985 roku przez wokalistę Martina Walkyera i basistę Frazera Caske. Dołącza zaraz do nich Andy Sneap, gitarzysta, który w przyszłości zostanie cenionym producentem muzycznym. Wraz z Simonem Negusem za garami zaczęli grać i komponować.

Po wydaniu kilku demówek i singla wypluwają na świat debiut A History of a Time To Come. I kurwa, jak ktoś nie zna tego albumu, nie jest godzien uważać się za znawcę thrash metalu. Bo debiut Sabbat to po prostu doktorat z thrashu.

Jest tu wszystko - gitarowy nakurw jak choćby w A Cautionary Tale, mocarną perkusję, fenomenalne wokale Walkyiera, który potrafił śpiewać ostro i zadziornie, ale też potrafił wydobyć ze swoich strun głosowych mrok i niepokój. Same aranżacje utworów to mistrzostwo - posłuchajcie ostrego Hosanna in Excelsis, rytmicznego Horned is the Hunter czy zróżnicowanego For Those Who Died. Sneap co chwila serwuje fantastyczny riff bądź solo. Dodajmy do tego znakomite brzmienie oraz fantastyczną oprawę graficzną i mamy brylant.

Ha, a teraz wyobraźcie sobie że kurwa rok później nagrywają...

After a pair of demos and the "Blood for the Blood God" flexi-disc in White Dwarf magazine, it was only a matter of time before Sabbat birthed their first full-length masterpiece. That the amazing Noise Records signed the band comes as no surprise, they had possibly the best taste of any independent label in the 80s when it came to filling out their roster.

Thus, Sabbat released their debut, and one of the most impressive occult speed/thrash metal albums of its day. Martin Walkyier's vile vocal style is the perfect vehicle to steer the endless cavalry of well-constructed, intense riffing. I realize he got a little more diverse with Skyclad, but none of the goofy puns and limericks of that later project could touch his excellent lyrics and savage delivery in this band. His use of multiple styles really works in a conversational tone, from his snarls to his deeper, 'Chaos' voice.

A resounding intro piece leads into "A Cautionary Tale", an amazing Faustian track. Who could forget Walkyier's infernal sneering of: Bell, book and candle, candle, book, bell, forwards and backwards to damn me to Hell. "Hosanna in Excelsis" is an inspiration, charging piece about the revenge of the fallen angels upon Earth and Heaven, and it even reflects this in the lyrics, which are again unsurpassed in their delivery: Hark! The fallen Angels sing: Glory to Satan our King! The Holy Church we thus defied, the usurper crucified! set to an amazing, thrashing breakdown riff. "Behind the Crooked Cross" leers at you from behind its namesake, a crawling yet powerful track with some pickup speed metal. "Horned is the Hunter" is yet another excellent composition, with resonant acoustic intro which takes you to a sylvan glade before the chords erupt. "I for An Eye" features some cool harmonics over its opening riff, and is yet another track about the deception of the supposed path of divinity, as told to Lucifer as he was cast from Heaven, in total Paradise Lost style dialogue:

"For Those Who Died" is a tribute to the witches falsely burned at the stake. "A Dead Man's Robe" is an epic speed metal instrumental with a nice refrained, charging riff and subsequent breakdown. "The Church Bizarre" is a loving tribute to 'donations' to the pulpit. Religion and hypocrisy are such central subjects to this band, carrying through onto their 2nd album. But Sabbat handled it so well with Walkyier's mocking, clever lyrical explorations, it made the rest of the thrash/speed metal scene seem almost childlike and foolish by comparison. It's also clear that Martin was heavily inspired by classic English literature, a feat that would only be repeated once Cradle of Filth came along (a band who cites Sabbat as a major influence, it's not difficult to hear or see why, Dani also uses a mixture of snarls and grunts to deliver his classical and poetic lyrics). In fact I feel this record had a largely uncredited impact on the emerging black metal genre as a whole. The band has reunited since Walkyier left Skyclad, to do some reunion tours and festival. Who knows if we'll get a new album.

If there is one reason I can't give this album a perfect score, the mix of the album does not hold up for me particularly well, and I favor the 2nd album Dreamweaver ever so slightly for this reason. It's not bad but the guitars don't carry a lot of resounding power. Regardless, this is one of the best thrash/speed metal albums of the 20th century, cohesive and impressive. It's one of the albums that forever emblazoned my soul with the phrase 'Thrash Until Death'. Absolutely mandatory listening, as well as its successor.

After a pair of demos and the "Blood for the Blood God" flexi-disc in White Dwarf magazine, it was only a matter of time before Sabbat birthed their first full-length masterpiece. That the amazing Noise Records signed the band comes as no surprise, they had possibly the best taste of any independent label in the 80s when it came to filling out their roster.

Thus, Sabbat released their debut, and one of the most impressive occult speed/thrash metal albums of its day. Martin Walkyier's vile vocal style is the perfect vehicle to steer the endless cavalry of well-constructed, intense riffing. I realize he got a little more diverse with Skyclad, but none of the goofy puns and limericks of that later project could touch his excellent lyrics and savage delivery in this band. His use of multiple styles really works in a conversational tone, from his snarls to his deeper, 'Chaos' voice.

A resounding intro piece leads into "A Cautionary Tale", an amazing Faustian track. Who could forget Walkyier's infernal sneering of: Bell, book and candle, candle, book, bell, forwards and backwards to damn me to Hell. "Hosanna in Excelsis" is an inspiration, charging piece about the revenge of the fallen angels upon Earth and Heaven, and it even reflects this in the lyrics, which are again unsurpassed in their delivery: Hark! The fallen Angels sing: Glory to Satan our King! The Holy Church we thus defied, the usurper crucified! set to an amazing, thrashing breakdown riff. "Behind the Crooked Cross" leers at you from behind its namesake, a crawling yet powerful track with some pickup speed metal. "Horned is the Hunter" is yet another excellent composition, with resonant acoustic intro which takes you to a sylvan glade before the chords erupt. "I for An Eye" features some cool harmonics over its opening riff, and is yet another track about the deception of the supposed path of divinity, as told to Lucifer as he was cast from Heaven, in total Paradise Lost style dialogue:

"For Those Who Died" is a tribute to the witches falsely burned at the stake. "A Dead Man's Robe" is an epic speed metal instrumental with a nice refrained, charging riff and subsequent breakdown. "The Church Bizarre" is a loving tribute to 'donations' to the pulpit. Religion and hypocrisy are such central subjects to this band, carrying through onto their 2nd album. But Sabbat handled it so well with Walkyier's mocking, clever lyrical explorations, it made the rest of the thrash/speed metal scene seem almost childlike and foolish by comparison. It's also clear that Martin was heavily inspired by classic English literature, a feat that would only be repeated once Cradle of Filth came along (a band who cites Sabbat as a major influence, it's not difficult to hear or see why, Dani also uses a mixture of snarls and grunts to deliver his classical and poetic lyrics). In fact I feel this record had a largely uncredited impact on the emerging black metal genre as a whole. The band has reunited since Walkyier left Skyclad, to do some reunion tours and festival. Who knows if we'll get a new album.

If there is one reason I can't give this album a perfect score, the mix of the album does not hold up for me particularly well, and I favor the 2nd album Dreamweaver ever so slightly for this reason. It's not bad but the guitars don't carry a lot of resounding power. Regardless, this is one of the best thrash/speed metal albums of the 20th century, cohesive and impressive. It's one of the albums that forever emblazoned my soul with the phrase 'Thrash Until Death'. Absolutely mandatory listening, as well as its successor.
