Debiutanckie MCD Phalanx Inferno zostało wydane przez polską wytwórnię Godz OV War dokładnie w tym samym czasie co MCD Niemców z Bestial Warfare. Amerykanie również grają muzykę na pograniczy death i black metalu, ale na tym podobieństwa się kończą. O ile Bestial Warfare stawiają na szybkość, furię i intensywność popartą ciężkim, miażdżącym brzmieniem, tak Phalanx Inferno wydaje mi się nieco bardziej przestrzenne i diaboliczne, składającej hołd starej amerykańskiej scenie death metalowej. Sporo tu melodyjnych zagrywek (szczególnie w instrumentalnym, wielowątkowym „Pride…Carnality…Enlightenment”), a nawet zamaszystych partii solowych („Renewed Ultra-Violence”).

Nic odkrywczego, nic zadziwiającego, ale jednocześnie kawał naprawdę solidnego grania z muzyką, która równie dobrze mogłaby zostać nagrana trzydzieści lat temu, jak i przypuszczam też – za trzydzieści lat i cieszyłaby równie mocno. Oprócz materiału autorskiego na MCD znalazł się jeszcze cover utworu Celitc Frost z płyty „Cold Lake”. No nie, wiadomo, że to niemożliwe – panowie wzięli na warsztat „Jewel Throne” z debiutu Szwajcarów.

To MCD nie jest dziś absolutnie niczym wielkiem, ale przypuszczam, że gdybym taki materiał odkrył w czeluściach undergroundu w 1993 roku to zabrudziłbym bieliznę i dziś mówiąc o nim używałabym przymiotnika „kultowy”. Właśnie takie wydawnictwa potwierdzając absolutną potęgę współczesnej sceny metalowej – przechodzą cicho, niezauważone i niepozorne – bo w istocie przecież nie wnoszą żadnej nowej jakości. Jednocześnie emanują niczym nieskalanym ponadczasowym duchem undergroundu, który sprawia, że najbardziej zagorzałym fanom gatunku szybciej biją serduszka.

Madrid's AVERSIO HUMANITATIS follow-up 2020's white-hot "Behold the Silent Dwellers" with another stunning slice of unrelenting, modernist and oft-dissonant Black Metal.

Third full-length "To Become the Endless Static" finds the band teeth-clenched, razor-sharp, galvanised with self-belief and on devastatingly intense terrain. This time around the barrage of skewed melodies hit angrier and nastier in their anthemic abstraction, fuelling a set of weighty BM compositions with the crushing brutality of angular Death Metal.

Fortified by a characteristically immaculate production from the band's own Simón Da Silva (CANCER, MARTRÖÐ, SELBST) at The Empty Hall Studio, AVERSIO have crafted a hammer-blow of astounding riffing, warped leads, riotous drumming and ultra-committed vocals all wrapped in an oppressive atmosphere as serious as your life.

Thematically, the album explores the gradual deterioration of an individual's consciousness and physical integrity, as their mind slowly slips away. All pathways, dreams and connections to what once formed their identity spiral down, merging into the great nothing, the endless static.




"To Become the Endless Static", the third album by Spanish black metal experimentalists Aversio Humanitatis, sounds on first impression like a continuation of their previous work, "Behold the Silent Dwellers" (2020). There is nothing surprising about this, because the production on it was handled again at The Empty Hall Studio, guitarist Simón Da Silva's personal studio.

As the album progresses you realize that Aversio Humanitatis clearly aimed to bring their material to a common denominator. And they did so at the expense of melodiousness to a certain degree: "To Become the Endless Static" sounds more monolithic and coherent, but is clearly inferior to its predecessor in expression – "Behold the Silent Dwellers" was richer in entrancing passages, and even somehow more poetic. But the reduction in the level of melodism should not be misleading: "To Become the Endless Static" is marked by the same richness of the canvas of songs, even greater – why else would they have added a second guitarist? – it's just less obvious now, most often, Aversio Humanitatis, whether intentionally or subconsciously, blur their melodic passages.

Opener "Long Stretch the Shadows" presents the blast-beat pummel accompanied by a dissonant riff immediately. This solemn low-pitched attack sounds both aggressive and atmospheric, it lours with its thick sound over the listener like a toxic cloud, from which high-pitched tremolo-picked licks, sharp and short, erupt like lightning bolts. Essentially, this is Aversio Humanitatis in all their glory, while sometimes the rhythm is embellished with slightly dissonant guitar picking ("To Become the Endless Static", "Strange Angles"). In this sense, nothing has changed either.

A low-pitched dissonant attack bristling with piercing tremolos began to reign supreme in the Aversio Humanitatis music since their "Longing for the Untold" EP (2017). It was at this stage that they adopted modern black metal. This record was a natural progression from their debut album, "Abandonment Ritual" (2011), but it also marked a departure from some of their previously matured experience.

The debut was an amalgam of old-school and modern black metal. Roughly speaking, it was something in the vein of Darkthrone with a slight hint at dissonance. Well, it wasn't so much dissonance as an attempt to switch over to it. Or: we heard a kind of experimental Armagedda on "Abandonment Ritual". Even then, of course, you could detect the manner that would become dominant in the future: piercing tremolo picking drowned out by a tough rhythm guitar – the title track demonstrates this clearly. But the schtick of the album was different: some almost avant-garde riff with sorts of interesting side-tones was repeated tremendously, creating a unique aura.

On the watershed "Longing for the Untold" EP, Aversio Humanitatis abandoned these hypnotic repetitions, also began to frequently use blast-beat sections, and instead of cultivating weird riffs, they switched to influences from Blut aus Nord (riffing manner and melodism), Kriegsmaschine (structure and atmosphere), and Deathspell Omega (scattered passages). Actually, the influence of Kriegsmaschine's second album, "Enemy of Man" (2014), was clearly evident on this release, from low-pitched dissonant pressing with a superimposed embellishment to the vocal manner of Destroyer, for whom this album was the last work with Kriegsmaschine.

The "Longing for the Untold" EP still featured some experimental sounds from the previously compiled material, even ambient insertions were used a couple of times, but those elements were abandoned on "Behold the Silent Dwellers". In turn, on "To Become the Endless Static", Aversio Humanitatis finished off the remnants of old-school choices. You could still hear them on "Behold the Silent Dwellers" ("The Sculptor of Thoughts" and "The Scribe of Dust"), but here they're gone. It seems that Aversio Humanitatis are not very fond of looking back on the past, although their non-metal injections were quite successful.

As a result of these purges of the ranks, "To Become the Endless Static" is permeated with dissonances almost entirely. There would probably even be too much of them, if Aversio Humanitatis didn't occasionally make them piercing (though not as often as on "Behold the Silent Dwellers"). The most impressive song in this regard is "Blackened Mold Marrow". A piercing tremolo section enters here as an embellishment during the solemn low-pitched attack. It's very poignant and doomed, in the spirit of Blut aus Nord. Dissonance-wise, the difference from the previous material also lies in the fact that Aversio Humanitatis employ some Misþyrming's patterns on "To Become the Endless Static", the most obvious example being "Strange Angles", which begins with short high-pitched dissonant riffs, followed by guitar picking.

While tremolo licks don't serve as embellishments on the last two songs, but rather as a basis – they are really prolonged more than usual. This isn't very noticeable on "The White Noise is Calling", as this song sounds somewhat erratic compared to the rest, it even opens uncharacteristically for the album, with some post-black metal intonation, while all the songs begin in the blasting manner of the opening track, except for "Strange Angles", which starts at a medium tempo, although in keeping with the band's attitude. The final "Collapsing in the Resonance" is, to be honest, saved just by a piercing apogee in the vein of Deathspell Omega.

Too often, as on the previous album, the vocals tear the dark atmosphere to shreds. The rasping vocals are, of course, very much on topic, while the utterances, performed in the manner typical for modern black metal, are a different matter – they are more like declamations overflowing with theatrics à la Nergal, pay attention to "The White Noise is Calling" in this regard.

Summary. You have to be sensitive with "To Become the Endless Static", it's not just "another dissonant black metal album". However, this work can serve as a good example of how zealous adherence to modern tendencies dilutes the initial originality.

Madrid's AVERSIO HUMANITATIS follow-up 2020's white-hot "Behold the Silent Dwellers" with another stunning slice of unrelenting, modernist and oft-dissonant Black Metal.

Third full-length "To Become the Endless Static" finds the band teeth-clenched, razor-sharp, galvanised with self-belief and on devastatingly intense terrain. This time around the barrage of skewed melodies hit angrier and nastier in their anthemic abstraction, fuelling a set of weighty BM compositions with the crushing brutality of angular Death Metal.

Fortified by a characteristically immaculate production from the band's own Simón Da Silva (CANCER, MARTRÖÐ, SELBST) at The Empty Hall Studio, AVERSIO have crafted a hammer-blow of astounding riffing, warped leads, riotous drumming and ultra-committed vocals all wrapped in an oppressive atmosphere as serious as your life.

Thematically, the album explores the gradual deterioration of an individual's consciousness and physical integrity, as their mind slowly slips away. All pathways, dreams and connections to what once formed their identity spiral down, merging into the great nothing, the endless static.




"To Become the Endless Static", the third album by Spanish black metal experimentalists Aversio Humanitatis, sounds on first impression like a continuation of their previous work, "Behold the Silent Dwellers" (2020). There is nothing surprising about this, because the production on it was handled again at The Empty Hall Studio, guitarist Simón Da Silva's personal studio.

As the album progresses you realize that Aversio Humanitatis clearly aimed to bring their material to a common denominator. And they did so at the expense of melodiousness to a certain degree: "To Become the Endless Static" sounds more monolithic and coherent, but is clearly inferior to its predecessor in expression – "Behold the Silent Dwellers" was richer in entrancing passages, and even somehow more poetic. But the reduction in the level of melodism should not be misleading: "To Become the Endless Static" is marked by the same richness of the canvas of songs, even greater – why else would they have added a second guitarist? – it's just less obvious now, most often, Aversio Humanitatis, whether intentionally or subconsciously, blur their melodic passages.

Opener "Long Stretch the Shadows" presents the blast-beat pummel accompanied by a dissonant riff immediately. This solemn low-pitched attack sounds both aggressive and atmospheric, it lours with its thick sound over the listener like a toxic cloud, from which high-pitched tremolo-picked licks, sharp and short, erupt like lightning bolts. Essentially, this is Aversio Humanitatis in all their glory, while sometimes the rhythm is embellished with slightly dissonant guitar picking ("To Become the Endless Static", "Strange Angles"). In this sense, nothing has changed either.

A low-pitched dissonant attack bristling with piercing tremolos began to reign supreme in the Aversio Humanitatis music since their "Longing for the Untold" EP (2017). It was at this stage that they adopted modern black metal. This record was a natural progression from their debut album, "Abandonment Ritual" (2011), but it also marked a departure from some of their previously matured experience.

The debut was an amalgam of old-school and modern black metal. Roughly speaking, it was something in the vein of Darkthrone with a slight hint at dissonance. Well, it wasn't so much dissonance as an attempt to switch over to it. Or: we heard a kind of experimental Armagedda on "Abandonment Ritual". Even then, of course, you could detect the manner that would become dominant in the future: piercing tremolo picking drowned out by a tough rhythm guitar – the title track demonstrates this clearly. But the schtick of the album was different: some almost avant-garde riff with sorts of interesting side-tones was repeated tremendously, creating a unique aura.

On the watershed "Longing for the Untold" EP, Aversio Humanitatis abandoned these hypnotic repetitions, also began to frequently use blast-beat sections, and instead of cultivating weird riffs, they switched to influences from Blut aus Nord (riffing manner and melodism), Kriegsmaschine (structure and atmosphere), and Deathspell Omega (scattered passages). Actually, the influence of Kriegsmaschine's second album, "Enemy of Man" (2014), was clearly evident on this release, from low-pitched dissonant pressing with a superimposed embellishment to the vocal manner of Destroyer, for whom this album was the last work with Kriegsmaschine.

The "Longing for the Untold" EP still featured some experimental sounds from the previously compiled material, even ambient insertions were used a couple of times, but those elements were abandoned on "Behold the Silent Dwellers". In turn, on "To Become the Endless Static", Aversio Humanitatis finished off the remnants of old-school choices. You could still hear them on "Behold the Silent Dwellers" ("The Sculptor of Thoughts" and "The Scribe of Dust"), but here they're gone. It seems that Aversio Humanitatis are not very fond of looking back on the past, although their non-metal injections were quite successful.

As a result of these purges of the ranks, "To Become the Endless Static" is permeated with dissonances almost entirely. There would probably even be too much of them, if Aversio Humanitatis didn't occasionally make them piercing (though not as often as on "Behold the Silent Dwellers"). The most impressive song in this regard is "Blackened Mold Marrow". A piercing tremolo section enters here as an embellishment during the solemn low-pitched attack. It's very poignant and doomed, in the spirit of Blut aus Nord. Dissonance-wise, the difference from the previous material also lies in the fact that Aversio Humanitatis employ some Misþyrming's patterns on "To Become the Endless Static", the most obvious example being "Strange Angles", which begins with short high-pitched dissonant riffs, followed by guitar picking.

While tremolo licks don't serve as embellishments on the last two songs, but rather as a basis – they are really prolonged more than usual. This isn't very noticeable on "The White Noise is Calling", as this song sounds somewhat erratic compared to the rest, it even opens uncharacteristically for the album, with some post-black metal intonation, while all the songs begin in the blasting manner of the opening track, except for "Strange Angles", which starts at a medium tempo, although in keeping with the band's attitude. The final "Collapsing in the Resonance" is, to be honest, saved just by a piercing apogee in the vein of Deathspell Omega.

Too often, as on the previous album, the vocals tear the dark atmosphere to shreds. The rasping vocals are, of course, very much on topic, while the utterances, performed in the manner typical for modern black metal, are a different matter – they are more like declamations overflowing with theatrics à la Nergal, pay attention to "The White Noise is Calling" in this regard.

Summary. You have to be sensitive with "To Become the Endless Static", it's not just "another dissonant black metal album". However, this work can serve as a good example of how zealous adherence to modern tendencies dilutes the initial originality.

„Cosmic Clouds” to kompilacja archiwalnych nagrań brytyjskiej grupy Cycle. Zawiera materiał z ultrarzadkiego debiutanckiego albumu z 1971 roku (prywatne tłoczenie w 99 egzemplarzach), niewydany wcześniej drugi album nagrany w 1973 oraz późniejsze demo z 1975. Muzyka łączy ciężki hard rock z elementami psychodelii i wczesnego rocka progresywnego, z długimi gitarowymi partiami i surowym, undergroundowym brzmieniem.


Nieoceniony Rise Above Records dający drugie życie zapomnianym zespołom lat 70-tych przyczynił się do wydobycia na światło dzienne fantastycznego skarbu złotej ery bezkompromisowej brytyjskiej muzyki rockowej – power tria CYCLE. Na płycie „Cosmic Clouds” wydanej w 2020 roku zebrano wszystkie dostępne nagrania zespołu, w tym debiutancki album z 1971 roku wytłoczony przez grupę w ilości… 99 egzemplarzy! Do kompaktowego wydania dołączono piękną, 40-stronicową książeczkę zawierającą historię tria z licznymi zdjęciami pochodzącymi głównie z archiwalnych zbiorów muzyków. Blisko 80 minut fantastycznej muzyki zadowoli z pewnością wszelkiej maści purystów mogących prześledzić historię rozwoju tria od początku istnienia, po jego koniec w 1975 roku.

Cycle (pierwotnie nazywający się Psycle) powstało w północno-wschodniej Anglii, konkretnie w Middlesbrough w składzie John Whittingham (g), Ronnie Patterson (bg) i Norman Smith (dr). Wzorując się na Cream i The Jimi Hendrix Experience zaczęli od grania rockowych coverów z biegiem czasu tworząc własne kompozycje w stylu garage rocka mieszając go z ciężkim bluesem podlanym psychodelicznym sosem. Szybko zyskali popularność wśród lokalnych fanów i w zasadzie do końca swych dni ich sława nigdy nie przekroczyła granic rodzinnego miasta i hrabstwa North Yorkshire. Szkoda, bo promotorzy koncertów chętnie obsadzali ich w roli zespołu towarzyszącemu takim grupom jak Hawkwind, Van Der Graaf Generator, Atomic Rooster, Argent, East Of Eden… Według ludzi z branży, a także muzycznej prasy widziano w nich „rozwojową grupę z szansami na sukces”. Tyle, że sukcesowi, tak jak i szczęściu, trzeba pomóc. Najlepiej podpisując kontrakt z wytwórnią i szybko nagrać płytę. Zaczęli od tego ostatniego.

Na początku lat 70-tych w Wielkiej Brytanii istniała niewielka liczba niezależnych, prywatnych firm fonograficznych. Najbardziej godna uwagi była SRT (Sound Recording Technology) z Shefford kierowana przez Davida Richardsona oferująca początkującym wykonawcom zarówno studio nagraniowe, jak i możliwość wytłoczenia płyty. Ronnie Patterson: „Poszliśmy do studia i rano zrobiliśmy wszystkie podkłady, a po południu wokale. Zarejestrowaliśmy sześć utworów w jeden dzień. Produkcja praktycznie nie istniała, nagraliśmy to na „setkę” jakbyśmy grali koncert. Tyle, że bez publiczności.”

Pomimo braku producenta materiał broni się niesamowicie dobrze uchwyconym, dynamicznym brzmieniem zespołu. Już pierwsze tytuły, ich różnorodność, bogactwo, pomysłowość wystarczą, aby nabrać apetytu na dalszą część odsłuchu całej płyty. Co by nie mówić, chłopaki mieli talent! Pierwsze sześć utworów z „Cosmic Clouds” składające się na debiutancki album same w sobie oferują bogate spektrum muzyczne zespołu: garażowy rock („Rich Man, Poor Man, Pig”); ciężki blues rock z lamentem nad umierającym światem („Mr Future”); acidową podróż z odważnymi wypadami w stronę space rocka („Father Of Time”); psychodelię z odrobiną Santany („SP Blues”); brytyjski blues rock w stylistyce Free przestrzegający przed narkotykami („Earth And Sun”). Nad całością czuwa muzyczny duch Black Sabbath połączony z kosmiczną eksploracją spod znaku Hawkwind. Czuć, że trio szukało swojego stylu i nie do końca jeszcze wiedziało, w którą stronę podąży. Muzyka zmieniała się, a oni z nią.

Album, wytłoczony w nakładzie dziewięćdziesięciu dziewięciu sztuk nie posiadał okładki. Część kopii, zapakowane w szarą kopertę, podarowali najbliższym: rodzinie i przyjaciołom. Kilka rozesłali do radiowych rozgłośni i firm fonograficznych mając nadzieję na pozytywny odzew (bez odzewu). Resztę rozdali na koncertach. Nie muszę dodawać, że dziś to prawdziwy „biały kruk czarnego krążka” osiągający na płytowych giełdach niebotyczne ceny.

Moim skromnym zdaniem prawdziwą gwiazdą tego wydawnictwa są jednak kolejne nagrania – te z listopada 1973 roku, które trio przygotowało z myślą o drugim, nigdy nie wydanym albumie. Jeśli pierwszą część „Cosmic Clouds” potraktować jako przypomnienie straconego okresu żywej kreatywności, to utwory, które składają się na drugą odsłonę są słodko-gorzkim świadectwem tego, co mogło być czymś wyjątkowym, a czym się nie stało. Słuchając go dopiero teraz przekonujemy się, że trio nie obniżyło lotów. Przeciwnie. Muzyka przybrała bardziej progresywny zwrot, a śmiałe zastosowanie elektroniki (przede wszystkim oscylatora) dodało jej unikalnego akcentu, czego przykładem otwierający ten set galopujący „Travelling Man”, a także „Tomorrow’s World” brzmiący jak włoskie zespoły prog rockowe tamtych lat. Doskonałym wskaźnikiem progresji było dodanie tu odrobiny soulu i pustynnego bluesa, ale to psychodeliczne jamy rozwalają system. Jestem pewien, że gdyby te szalenie pomysłowe i dzikie kawałki ujrzały światło dzienne w chwili ich powstania dziś byłyby klasykami. Wpływy progresji sięgają także space rocka („Father Of Time”), w którym znajdujemy wizję „przestrzennej” muzyki z dźwiękowymi efektami, ale (co trzeba zapisać zespołowi na plus) nie odchodzącymi od pięknej struktury ciężkiego rocka. Inną perełką, o której muszę wspomnieć jest „In The Beginning” zagrane łagodnym, średnim tempem, ale z prawdziwie ognistym żarem. Dwa ostatnie nagrania na płycie to dema z 1975 roku: „Walking Thorugh The Darkness”, oraz „Dawning Of The Last Life”. Choć ich jakość nieco odbiega od reszty mają dużą wartość muzyczną. Szczególnie pierwszy, przyprawiający o zawrót głowy, przenosi muzyków na nowe terytoria ocierające się o funkowy soul z gitarowym atakiem. Wyszło bardzo ciekawie.

Cycle w erze progresywnego undergroundu wczesnych lat 70-tych, był naprawdę znakomitą grupą. Grupą swoich czasów, która powinna była zyskać uznanie. Poza ciężkim, blues rockowym „Mr. Future” wszystkie pozostałe nagrania zebrane na tej płycie wydają się o dekady wyprzedzać swoje czasy i wciąż można je usłyszeć w każdym stonerowym zespole na przestrzeni ostatnich trzydziestu lat! To jedynie utwierdza mnie w przekonaniu, że „Cosmic Clouds”, kultowy artefakt złotej ery podziemnego brytyjskiego hard rocka, powinien stać na półce obok klasyków gatunku.

Los Mentas to wenezuelski zespół rockabilly i punkowy. W jego skład wchodzą: Juan Olmedillo – główny wokal, gitara rytmiczna i harmonijka ustna; Hector Paredes (Lukas) – gitara basowa (w pierwszych latach działalności zespołu charakterystycznie grał na kontrabasie); Carlos Aray – gitara prowadząca i banjo; oraz Richard Blanco (El Chicha) – perkusja. Obecnie jest to jedyny zespół rockabilly w Wenezueli. Ich teksty są zazwyczaj rymowane i przesycone czarnym humorem. Zespół powstał w Caracas około 1998 roku w wyniku rozpadu grup Skabiosis i Amor de Madre. Początkowo ich zamiarem było granie wyłącznie rockabilly, lecz później włączyli do swojego repertuaru elementy swingu, ska i punka. Już w 1999 roku bezapelacyjnie wygrali festiwal Nuevas Bandas, co zaowocowało krótką trasą koncertową po Kolumbii. W 2000 roku ukazał się ich debiutancki album „Taguara's Forever”, wydany niezależnie. Po sukcesie utworu „Mundo Porno” jego dystrybucją zajęła się firma Universal Music. W 2001 roku zespół został zaproszony na festiwal Rock al Parque w Kolumbii, a rok później wydał swój drugi album „Hasta Que Los Bares Nos Separen”. Teledysk do singla „Tomar” zaczął być emitowany w stacji MTV. Wstawka zawiera dziewiąty album studyjny zespołu.

W połowie lat 70. Pere Ubu brzmiał już oderwany od niemal wszystkiego, co ich otaczało. Zespół, powstały w Cleveland z pozostałości po undergroundowej scenie rockowej, połączył garażowy rock, industrialny noise, awangardową strukturę i rozbite popowe instynkty w coś, co wydawało się niestabilne, ale dziwnie przemyślane. Wydany w 2015 roku przez Fire Records album „Elitism For The People 1975–1978” gromadzi fundamentalne nagrania zespołu z ich najwcześniejszego i najbardziej wpływowego okresu.

Muzyka rzadko przyjmuje wygodną formę. Rytmy szarpią do przodu, gitary zgrzytają i pulsują, zamiast konwencjonalnie riffować, a elektronika dryfuje w tle niczym uszkodzone transmisje. W centrum uwagi znajduje się głos Davida Thomasa, częściowo narratora, częściowo obserwatora, poruszającego się po utworach w niespokojnym, półmrocznym stylu, który nadaje nawet spokojniejszym fragmentom poczucie napięcia.

Uderzająca jest w całym zestawie precyzja organizacji chaosu. Albumy takie jak „The Modern Dance” i „Dub Housing” brzmią początkowo agresywnie, ale po wielokrotnym przesłuchaniu ujawniają powtarzające się fragmenty melodyczne, uporządkowane powtórzenia i silną atmosferę podszytą hałasem. Muzyka często brzmi miejska i industrialna, ale nigdy mechaniczna. Zawsze kryje się za nią ruch.

Dodatkowe single, próby i rarytasy pogłębiają to wrażenie. Zamiast alternatywnych wersji, które stanowią osobliwości, pokazują, jak zespół nieustannie przekształcał materiał, pozwalając utworom mutować między sesjami i występami.

Płyta sprawia wrażenie wejścia do zamkniętego świata, w którym dźwięk jest jednocześnie trudny, zabawny, niepokojący i niespodziewanie ludzki. To, co kiedyś wydawało się agresywne, stopniowo staje się spójne, aż logika muzyki zaczyna ujawniać się z jej własnego chaosu.

Mroczny, pełen goryczy, ciężki, będący emocjonalnym rozliczeniem z przeszłością album jakim był wydany w 2021 roku The Bitter Truth wskrzesił formację Evanescence po wielu latach dryfu w mainstreamowym niebycie. Grupa po wielkim debiucie w 2003 roku przez kolejne lata borykała się z rozmaitymi konfliktami personalnymi, sporami prawnymi, problemami z wytwórnią muzyczną Wind-up oraz osobistymi tragediami stanowiącej jej trzon Amy Lee. The Bitter Truth, po wielu przesunięciach premiery storpedowanej m.in. przez globalną pandemię, symbolicznie odrodził band trwale wzniecając w jego członkach zapał do nagrywania nowej muzyki i aktywnego koncertowania. Zamykający płytę Blind Belief był wezwaniem do porzucenia przestarzałych dogmatów i ślepej wiary w autorytety na rzecz miłości, odkupienia, pojednania i budowania lepszego, bardziej świadomego świata dla przyszłych pokoleń. Z tego punktu widzenia, wydany właśnie album Sanctuary zdaje się być naturalną kontynuacją The Bitter Truth. Heavy metal, of course, is very serious business.

Anger, misanthropy, pessimism, dour facial expressions, dark clothing, corpse paint, all the loud, all the fast, the ugly, and the brutal… It’s all Very Very Serious Business.

Well… okay… maybe not all of it.

Birdflesh is approaching their thirtieth year now, all of those three decades filled with what Metal Archives describes succinctly as “humorous death and gore.” Only drummer Andreas “Andreas Pisser” Mitroulis remains from the band’s earliest days, but the power and the spirit of Birdflesh’s goofy grinding transcends any line-up shifts. Two years back, Extreme Graveyard Tornado showed that there was still plenty of meat left on these Birds’ bones after an eleven-year break between full-lengths, more of the same and yet eternally enjoyable, all ridiculous lyrics and straight-up catchy-as-hell thrashing grindcore.
Now, two years later, All The Miseries is a new EP, and it’s ultimately more like two EPs in one convenient package. There’s a new studio half, a lucky thirteen tracks that show everything is yet again business as usual for these irreverent Swedes. And also there’s an eleven-song live set from Belgium as a bonus.

The studio half of All The Miseries is Birdflesh being Birdflesh, an irresistibly gleeful grinding good time, filled with jokey titles like “Dying After Midnight,” “Kickstart My Ass,” and “Gore Ensemble.” You’ve got the eminently and ironically hooky chorus of “Radioactive Madness” (cleverly about cloying pop music, not radiation poisoning), and the short burst of Warped Tour snot-punk of “Spinebreaker” (a cautionary tale about skateboarding, and apparently Birdflesh is as good at that as I am). You’ve got the raging raucous “Pissboy” (“he’ll piss on your vinyl collection!”), and the “what the hell?” tale of tattoo oddness of “Inked Deth.” Thirteen songs of rip-roaring thrash / grind in about as many minutes — Birdflesh being Birdflesh. If you dig them, you’ll dig this, and if you don’t, you can jump in anytime.

The live half of the EP is a little lesser, but then again, I would argue that, with a handful of notable exceptions, live recordings typically tend to be, regardless of the act. The live set benefits from the presence of some Birdflesh “classics” like “Alive Autopsy” or “Victim Of The Cat” (here adjusted to “Victim Of The Cat..tle Decapitation” in honor of their tour-mates at the time), but it’s not a sonic wonder, by any means, all raw and ragged blasting and screams. Having had the pleasure of a Birdflesh live show on two occasions, I can vouch for them being a brilliantly fun and energetic live band, but this live recording of them doesn’t quite match the spark or capture the silliness. Still, there’s some merit in the ridiculous tongue-in-cheek stage banter — “This song is from the Alive Autopsy LP. This song is about an alive autopsy. This one is called… ‘ALIVE AUTOPSYYYY!” — and as mentioned, the tracks collected here are among Birdflesh’s best, even if the studio versions are all better.

If you’re into grind and fun, then you should be into Birdflesh. This is serious business, I say. Serious business, indeed.
