Raz na kilka lat trafiają się albumy-molochy, rozpasane dzieła budzące z jednej strony niechęć swoim przepychem, intensywnością i rozmiarem, a z drugiej strony respekt, szacunek i podziw, za sprawą tego samego. Albumy to niełatwe, często budzące skrajne emocje. By nie szukać daleko wystarczy wspomnieć relatywnie niedawno wydany „Vitriseptome”, czy odrobinę dawniej „Lunaterial”. Albumy to na tyle rozpoznawalne, że nazw artystów przytaczać chyba nie muszę. Do tego grona śmiało należy dopisać najnowszy, drugi już album Brytoli z Cryptic Shift. Wydany przed sześcioma laty „Visitations From Enceladus” już wtedy pokazywał, że Ci goście nie boją się długich form, nie boją się klasycznego thrashu (który nota bene jest chyba najbardziej wyeksploatowanym gatunkiem muzycznym na Ziemi) i nie boją się kombinować. Ale kto by się spodziewał, że za sprawą „Overspace & Supertime” wpierdolą się z buciorami na salony i dopierdolą 80 minut muzyki zamkniętej w pięciu kompozycjach, z których najdłuższa trwa blisko pół godziny. Grunt na jaki Angole wkroczyli to ruchome piaski, bagno, które może pogrzebać artystę szybciej niż sam się tego spodziewa, obnażyć wszelkie słabości nagrania i rozdmuchać je do gargantuicznych rozmiarów. Jako przykład przytoczę ostatni materiał Blood Incantation – album przyjemny, a właściwie nawet dobry, w którym schematyczny przeplataniec elektroniki Tangerine Dream z metalem śmierci z każdą minutą zaskakiwał i wciągał mniej niż bardziej. „Overspace & Supertime” to płyta metalowa z krwi i kości, na której inspiracje rockiem progresywnym lat 70. są rzeczywiście inspiracjami a nie kalkomanią lub imitacją. Crimsonowy surrealizm i hammillowa narracja są tutaj jedynie punktem wyjścia do muzycznej uczty, na której królują thrash i death metal. Schuldinerowa dyscyplina aranżacyjna i wykonawcza, voivodowy kosmos, nocturnusowy, nieco infantylny, ale i pierwotny animusz i vektorowe tempo – muzyko Cryptic Shift udało się to wszystko uchwycić, zrozumieć, zaadaptować i przetrawić na swoje. „Overspace & Supertime” to album kurewsko intensywny, bezkresnie pomysłowy, aranżacyjnie napuszony jak paw, a przy tym metalowy do szpiku kości. O ile pierwsze odsłuchy poddawały we mnie w wątpliwość sens pisania tak długich kawałków, tak każdy kolejny odsłuch otwierał przede mną kolejną małą furtkę do zrozumienia i celowości kolejnych zabiegów. Pewnie wiele furtek na tym albumie jeszcze przede mną do otwarcia, ale teraz niezmiernie się ciesze z tego, że ten album jest jaki jest. A jest on po prostu jak prawdziwa, muzyczne czarna dziura, która umie bawić i cieszyć się konwencją jednocześnie będąc bardzo muzyczną, stawiającą przed słuchaczem nie tylko ogromne wyzwanie, ale oferując w zamian naprawdę kupę radochy. Panowie z Cryptic Shift w żadnym momencie nie puszą się muzycznie, nie epatują niekończącymi się popisami instrumentalnymi, nie bujają w obłokach i nie próbują naginać tego swojego muzycznego świata, aby był bardziej „true”, bardziej poważny, ambitny. Wręcz przeciwnie – z tych dźwięków płynie niekłamana radość i szacunek dla metalowej tradycji przełomu lat 80. i 90. Ci goście bardzo często na tym materiale stąpają twardo po ziemi, operując niejednokrotnie graniem, które już kiedyś słyszeliśmy, ale robią to z taką klasą jakby sami cieszyli się, że mogą oddawać hołd temu, na czym się wychowali. Ta płyta jest wspaniała, ta płyta jest fascynująca, ta płyta jest na swój sposób piękna, na swój sposób sentymentalna, zupełnie jakby Ci goście znaleźli nagle w szafie swojego ukochanego misia z dzieciństwa i postawili go w roli szefa pośród wszelkich nowszych zabawek. Takie jest właśnie „Overspace & Supertime” - przepastne i ponadczasowe. Jestem święcie przekonany, że za bardzo niedługo będziemy mówili o tym albumie w kategorii klasyki i stawiali go obok dokonań Voivod, Death, Atheist i kilku innych ambitnych i wartościowych artystów z kręgu bardziej technicznego grania. Płyta z gatunku „tak się teraz nie gra”, płyta z gatunku tych wybitnych, których można nie kochać, można nie rozumieć, ale nie wypada nie usłyszeć. Tak, jest to płyta, którą koniecznie trzeba mieć w kolekcji, nawet jeśli, kiedy kurz i emocje opadną, będzie się jej słuchało rzadko. Ale jak już wjedzie na odtwarzacz, to świat wkoło będzie mógł nie istnieć.

Harlequin

Pierwszy album Brytyjczyków narobił sporego zamieszania w kręgach wielbicieli technicznego thrash/death jako materiał doskonale zagrany, cechujący się niepowtarzalnym kosmicznym klimatem, a w swej złożoności niemal wizjonerski. Cóż… dobra to była płyta, taka nawet ambitna (choć w oczywistych miejscach zalatywało od niej przerostem formy nad treścią) i do posłuchania, ale stanowczo zbyt przehajpowana. W każdym razie ja nie doszukałem się na „Visitations From Enceladus” tego, co u innych wywoływało tyle podniety. Enyłej, jadąc na tym hajpie, Cryptic Shift załapali się na kontrakt z Metal Blade i to właśnie dla nich po przydługiej przerwie nagrali Overspace & Supertime, materiał również przehajpowany…

W ciągu sześciu lat, jakie upłynęły od wydania debiutu, zespół na pewno okrzepł, dojrzał, rozwinął się pod względem technicznym (co się tyczy szczególnie perkusisty – nadgonił dystans, który dzielił go od kolegów) i poczynił wyraźne postępy w sferze zarządzania klimatem i budowy kompozycji. Ponadto Cryptic Shift nabrali jeszcze większych ambicji, by stworzyć coś epickiego, spektakularnego, coś, o czym się będzie mówić i co zostanie zapamiętane na długo. W rezultacie Overspace & Supertime to pięć szalenie rozbudowanych utworów o ogromnej rozpiętości stylistycznej zamkniętych w niespełna… 80 minutach. Przyswojenie tak kolosalnej dawki dość skomplikowanej, acz niepozbawionej chwytliwości muzyki wymaga od słuchacza niezwykłego skupienia, samozaparcia, a w pewnych fragmentach także cierpliwości. Bez tego można łatwo stracić wątek i szybko się zniechęcić, a to już byłby błąd, bo Overspace & Supertime ma naprawdę dużo do zaoferowania.

Rozwijając styl, Cryptic Shift uczynili go bardziej elastycznym, co z kolei pozwoliło im na w miarę swobodne przeskoki między skrajnościami – od efektownego technicznego death metalu (takiego bez udziwnień i przesadnej nowoczesności – w typie Revocation), przez agresywny progresywny thrash (dobrym punktem odniesienia będzie późny Vektor), po finezyjne zagrywki kojarzone z jazzem i fusion. Warto przy tym dodać, że nieco surowa estetyka debiutu ustąpiła miejsca wysublimowanym, choć niekoniecznie przystępniejszym formom. Z jednej strony muzyka została wygładzona i więcej w niej przestrzeni, z drugiej zaś odznacza się mocniejszym pierdolnięciem niż ta z „Visitations From Enceladus”.

Jeśli chodzi o największy wyróżnik Cryptic Shift, absurdalnie długie (10, 20 i 30 minut) kompozycje, to na tym polu zespół również dokonał pewnych postępów, choć nie na tyle dużych, żeby mnie w pełni do tego pomysłu przekonać. Na pewno Brytyjczycy na Overspace & Supertime sprawniej poradzili sobie z dopasowaniem poszczególnych części, dopilnowali wewnętrznej spójności i ograniczyli jałowe wypełniacze, ale to wciąż sztuka dla sztuki, bo takie kolosy niczemu — poza imersją nic innego nie przychodzi mi do głowy — nie służą. Bez problemu można było wyodrębnić z nich zamknięte sekcje, zwykle około 5-minutowe, które jako samodzielne utwory sprawdziłyby się lepiej i miały więcej sensu, o komunikatywności nie wspominając. Tylko kto by wtedy zwrócił na nie uwagę…

Overspace & Supertime z całą pewnością nie jest tak genialnym albumem, jak to się próbuje tu i ówdzie sugerować, ale bez wątpienia zawiera sporo atrakcyjnej i zajmującej muzyki, która nie nadaje się do słuchania na co dzień, jednak w odpowiednich warunkach potrafi sprawić dużo snobistycznej przyjemności.

As the doldrums of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown were settling in, many of us sought emotional and mental escapes. My escape was diving headfirst into music (ok, and booze). One of those musical escapes took me to the far reaches of the universe with a complex narrative that included the classic science fiction tropes of astral projection, celestial entities and the end of space-time. That escape was the album Visitations from Enceladus (2020) by Cryptic Shift. For the first time since then, the British prog/tech death thrashers have embarked on a new celestial voyage with Overspace & Supertime, which is “set in parallel” with the story from Visitations from Enceladus, following the quest of a new character called The Recaller through “asteroid-ridden space battles, cryogenic freezing chambers, [and] bizarre environments of hyperspace.”

As with Visitations from Enceladus, the intricacy with which Cryptic Shift approach their album’s lyrical concepts is reflected in the the music on Overspace & Supertime. The band's labyrinthine cosmic journeys still invoke Voivod’s angular sense of melody and oddball chord progressions, Atheist’s jazz flirtations and Gorguts’ hefty dissonance, but Overspace & Supertime finds them experimenting more than ever before, by delving into heady psychedelic territory throughout the album. The opening of “Stratocumulus Everaol” is far more surreal and abstract than the vast majority of death metal you’ll hear—both past and present. It begins with guitarists Xander Bradley and Joss Farrington playing off-kilter chord arpeggiations coupled with Allen Holdsworth-like experimentation. Meanwhile, an ominous cloud of distortion, which seems to mimic the sound of a rocket launch, continuously pans from left to right. The first quarter of the song continues this loosely structured approach before coalescing into a more structured section that more closely embodies this style of extreme metal. “Hexagonal Eyes (Diverity Trepaphymphasyzm)” is similarly exotic for the genre, beginning with a rapid tremolo effect before giving way to unearthly ambience that sounds as if the guitars are playing through a reverse delay. Arguably, closing track “Overspace & Supertime” contains the album's most otherworldly writing with warbly, nearly sitar-like sounds dominating its midsection. Much of the experimentation found throughout the album is unlike nearly anything else in metal today, much less thrash and death metal.

Despite the welcome experimentation, Overspace & Supertime's tracks suffer from a common issue with extended extreme metal compositions: sacrificing cohesion for complexity. I will admit that I am generally biased against long-form thrash, death, or black metal for this very reason. Whereas other long-form styles of music that are less reliant on technical exhibition allow the music to breathe and unfold gradually, that approach is difficult to manage with thrash or death metal. It works for post-metal or doom metal because of the aural space those subgenres inherently afford their compositions. On the other hand, thrash and death metal often rely upon compositional density and tempo intensity—neither of which necessarily lends itself to longer, fluid songs.

There isn’t always a lot holding the individual songs together, especially as it concerns the 20-minute title-track and half-hour-long “Stratocumulus Everaol”. The majestic passage that starts around 16:00 in the latter, for example, contains a lot of melodic information and would have made for a solid motif for the band to return to throughout the song, but it is only performed during that particular part of the track. It often seems as if Cryptic Shift would have been better off writing several individual songs rather than two 20-minute+ epics. Granted, both of those tracks have several subtitles each, noting specific shifts in the composition. But if there aren’t smooth transitions holding them together outside of the lyrical narrative, it seems they would have been better conceived as seperate songs. At nearly 10-minutes long, “Hyperspace Topography” is the second-shortest track on the album and my personal favorite. Although it takes a couple of sudden tangential turns, it sounds most similar to the shorter tracks on Visitations of Enceladus, both musically and structurally, with slightly less complicated sections and more fluid transitions from one segment to the next.

Overspace & Supertime remains a stunning display of musicianship and experimentation, in a style of music that has much of the former and little of the latter. However, rather than upping the ante with longer and more complex compositions, Cryptic Shift may have been better off focusing on more succinct and fluid songwriting. Nonetheless, the band’s psychedelic explorations couple tremendously well with the music’s celestial focus and set a high bar for bands exploring similar spaces.

Ponadto Cryptic Shift nabrali jeszcze większych ambicji, by stworzyć coś epickiego, spektakularnego, coś, o czym się będzie mówić i co zostanie zapamiętane na długo. W rezultacie Overspace & Supertime to pięć szalenie rozbudowanych utworów o ogromnej rozpiętości stylistycznej zamkniętych w niespełna… 80 minutach. Przyswojenie tak kolosalnej dawki dość skomplikowanej, acz niepozbawionej chwytliwości muzyki wymaga od słuchacza niezwykłego skupienia, samozaparcia, a w pewnych fragmentach także cierpliwości. Bez tego można łatwo stracić wątek i szybko się zniechęcić, a to już byłby błąd, bo Overspace & Supertime ma naprawdę dużo do zaoferowania.

Rozwijając styl, Cryptic Shift uczynili go bardziej elastycznym, co z kolei pozwoliło im na w miarę swobodne przeskoki między skrajnościami – od efektownego technicznego death metalu (takiego bez udziwnień i przesadnej nowoczesności – w typie Revocation), przez agresywny progresywny thrash (dobrym punktem odniesienia będzie późny Vektor), po finezyjne zagrywki kojarzone z jazzem i fusion. Warto przy tym dodać, że nieco surowa estetyka debiutu ustąpiła miejsca wysublimowanym, choć niekoniecznie przystępniejszym formom. Z jednej strony muzyka została wygładzona i więcej w niej przestrzeni, z drugiej zaś odznacza się mocniejszym pierdolnięciem niż ta z „Visitations From Enceladus”.

Jeśli chodzi o największy wyróżnik Cryptic Shift, absurdalnie długie (10, 20 i 30 minut) kompozycje, to na tym polu zespół również dokonał pewnych postępów, choć nie na tyle dużych, żeby mnie w pełni do tego pomysłu przekonać. Na pewno Brytyjczycy na Overspace & Supertime sprawniej poradzili sobie z dopasowaniem poszczególnych części, dopilnowali wewnętrznej spójności i ograniczyli jałowe wypełniacze, ale to wciąż sztuka dla sztuki, bo takie kolosy niczemu — poza imersją nic innego nie przychodzi mi do głowy — nie służą. Bez problemu można było wyodrębnić z nich zamknięte sekcje, zwykle około 5-minutowe, które jako samodzielne utwory sprawdziłyby się lepiej i miały więcej sensu, o komunikatywności nie wspominając. Tylko kto by wtedy zwrócił na nie uwagę…

Overspace & Supertime z całą pewnością nie jest tak genialnym albumem, jak to się próbuje tu i ówdzie sugerować, ale bez wątpienia zawiera sporo atrakcyjnej i zajmującej muzyki, która nie nadaje się do słuchania na co dzień, jednak w odpowiednich warunkach potrafi sprawić dużo snobistycznej przyjemności.

As the doldrums of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown were settling in, many of us sought emotional and mental escapes. My escape was diving headfirst into music (ok, and booze). One of those musical escapes took me to the far reaches of the universe with a complex narrative that included the classic science fiction tropes of astral projection, celestial entities and the end of space-time. That escape was the album Visitations from Enceladus (2020) by Cryptic Shift. For the first time since then, the British prog/tech death thrashers have embarked on a new celestial voyage with Overspace & Supertime, which is “set in parallel” with the story from Visitations from Enceladus, following the quest of a new character called The Recaller through “asteroid-ridden space battles, cryogenic freezing chambers, [and] bizarre environments of hyperspace.”

As with Visitations from Enceladus, the intricacy with which Cryptic Shift approach their album’s lyrical concepts is reflected in the the music on Overspace & Supertime. The band's labyrinthine cosmic journeys still invoke Voivod’s angular sense of melody and oddball chord progressions, Atheist’s jazz flirtations and Gorguts’ hefty dissonance, but Overspace & Supertime finds them experimenting more than ever before, by delving into heady psychedelic territory throughout the album. The opening of “Stratocumulus Everaol” is far more surreal and abstract than the vast majority of death metal you’ll hear—both past and present. It begins with guitarists Xander Bradley and Joss Farrington playing off-kilter chord arpeggiations coupled with Allen Holdsworth-like experimentation. Meanwhile, an ominous cloud of distortion, which seems to mimic the sound of a rocket launch, continuously pans from left to right. The first quarter of the song continues this loosely structured approach before coalescing into a more structured section that more closely embodies this style of extreme metal. “Hexagonal Eyes (Diverity Trepaphymphasyzm)” is similarly exotic for the genre, beginning with a rapid tremolo effect before giving way to unearthly ambience that sounds as if the guitars are playing through a reverse delay. Arguably, closing track “Overspace & Supertime” contains the album's most otherworldly writing with warbly, nearly sitar-like sounds dominating its midsection. Much of the experimentation found throughout the album is unlike nearly anything else in metal today, much less thrash and death metal.

Despite the welcome experimentation, Overspace & Supertime's tracks suffer from a common issue with extended extreme metal compositions: sacrificing cohesion for complexity. I will admit that I am generally biased against long-form thrash, death, or black metal for this very reason. Whereas other long-form styles of music that are less reliant on technical exhibition allow the music to breathe and unfold gradually, that approach is difficult to manage with thrash or death metal. It works for post-metal or doom metal because of the aural space those subgenres inherently afford their compositions. On the other hand, thrash and death metal often rely upon compositional density and tempo intensity—neither of which necessarily lends itself to longer, fluid songs.

There isn’t always a lot holding the individual songs together, especially as it concerns the 20-minute title-track and half-hour-long “Stratocumulus Everaol”. The majestic passage that starts around 16:00 in the latter, for example, contains a lot of melodic information and would have made for a solid motif for the band to return to throughout the song, but it is only performed during that particular part of the track. It often seems as if Cryptic Shift would have been better off writing several individual songs rather than two 20-minute+ epics. Granted, both of those tracks have several subtitles each, noting specific shifts in the composition. But if there aren’t smooth transitions holding them together outside of the lyrical narrative, it seems they would have been better conceived as seperate songs. At nearly 10-minutes long, “Hyperspace Topography” is the second-shortest track on the album and my personal favorite. Although it takes a couple of sudden tangential turns, it sounds most similar to the shorter tracks on Visitations of Enceladus, both musically and structurally, with slightly less complicated sections and more fluid transitions from one segment to the next.

Overspace & Supertime remains a stunning display of musicianship and experimentation, in a style of music that has much of the former and little of the latter. However, rather than upping the ante with longer and more complex compositions, Cryptic Shift may have been better off focusing on more succinct and fluid songwriting. Nonetheless, the band’s psychedelic explorations couple tremendously well with the music’s celestial focus and set a high bar for bands exploring similar spaces.

Broilers to niezwykle popularny niemiecki zespół punkrockowy, który powstał w 1992 roku w Dusseldorfie z inicjatywy wokalisty i gitarzysty Sammy'ego Amary oraz perkusisty Andreasa „Andiego” Brugge. Kapitalny, wydany w 1974 przez Brain Metronome (a brzmiący jak w 1972), debiutancki album niemieckiej formacji grającej ożywczy, pełen energii i dość melodyjny/chwytliwy rock progresywny (dużo Hammondów, dużo fletu, elektryczne gitary, mocne, gęste bębny) w klimacie najlepszych momentów Jane, Eloy, Out Of Focus, Nektar i Twenty Sixty Six And Then - ze szczyptą Jethro Tull (flet). Każdy utwór jest świetny - naprawdę brak wypełniaczy oraz późniejszego, artrockowego smęcenia. Prawdę mówiąc jeśli chodzi o bardziej komercyjny, cięższy krautrock jest to płyta wręcz wzorcowa i polecana jest wszystkim miłośnikom starego rocka!



SATIN WHALE, czyli płetwal błękitny... Muszę przyznać, że ta piękna nazwa rockowej kapeli uwiodła mnie. Może dlatego, że czuję wielki podziw, szacunek, respekt i ogromną sympatię do tych największych znanych zwierząt w historii Ziemi. Proszę sobie wyobrazić, że sam język dorosłego płetwala błękitnego waży (bagatela) 2700 kg, a szeroko rozwarte usta mogą pomieścić 90 ton pożywienia..! A co do zespołu – nie tylko nazwa mnie urzekła. Muzyka na szczęście też.

Ten niemiecki zespół został założony w 1971 roku w Kolonii (niem. Köln) przez Thomasa Brücka (bas, wokal), Gerarda Dellmanna (organy), Dietera Roesberga (gitara, saksofon, flet, wokal) i Horsta Schöffgena (perkusja). O jego początkach wiadomo niewiele, a i późniejsza kariera też nie obfitowała w historie, które zwracałyby szczególną uwagę mediów. Skromny zespół skupiający się na swojej muzyce nie jest pożywką dla bulwarowej prasy. Działając do 1981 roku zostawili po sobie dwa single i sześć długogrających płyt, z czego pierwszą „Desert Places” uważam za nokautującą, zaś druga, „Lost Mankind”, niewiele jej ustępuje.

Początkowo SATIN WHALE związali się z pionierską, dziś już legendarną wytwórnią Brian specjalizującą się w wydawaniu muzyki elektronicznej i krautrocka, dla której nagrywali tacy wykonawcy jak Klaus Schulze, Electric Sun, Grobschnitt, Guru Guru, Jane, Amon Dull… Debiutancki album został nagrany w maju 1973 roku w Rhenus Studios mieszczącym się w kolońskiej dzielnicy Godorf . Krążek zatytułowany „Desert Places” ukazał się dokładnie rok później.

Tak bardzo solidnej, progresywnej płyty z elementami i wpływami innych gatunków muzycznych w 1974 roku nie było zbyt wiele. Album prezentuje bogaty i energiczny rock progresywny z długimi utworami, charakteryzującymi się rozbudowanymi motywami instrumentalnymi, dynamicznymi jamami, potężnymi partiami jazzowej sekcji rytmicznej. Muzyka oparta jest na mocnych gitarach rytmicznych, ostrych riffach z mnóstwem efektów wah-wah (gra gitarzysty to przyjemność dla moich uszu!), baterią klawiszy (tony Hammondów) w psychodelicznym klimacie. Do tego dochodzą partie fletu, saksofon i dyskretne, klasyczne inspiracje z użyciem fortepianu. Cała płyta jest spójna i równa. Wspaniała demonstracja klimatów wczesnego krautrocka (Tommorow’s Gift, Eiliff), z odniesieniami do sceny brytyjskiej (Iron Butterfly, Cream, Jethro Tull), głównie ze względu na angielskie teksty i bluesowe wpływy. No i brzmi jakby została wydana co najmniej trzy lata wcześniej…

Tytułowe „Deseret Places” najbardziej przypomina wczesny Jethro Tull z szybującym fletem i ciężkimi organami, a potężne brzmienie z psychodeliczną gitarą bluesową bliskie jest Cream. Dieter Roesberg gra cudowne solo, jego gitara przez moment jest liderem wśród pozostałych instrumentów. W dalszej części wchodzi flet, a dialog z gitarzystą i przemienne sola na tle organów powodują gęsią skórę… Psychodeliczny „Seasons Of Life” to coś w stylu „The Doors spotyka Iron Butterfly”. Tyle, że w tym przypadku wyszło to jeszcze bardziej ekscytująco! Zwracam uwagę na ładnie wyeksponowany bas i gitarę prowadzącą, zaś Hammond w dalszej części nagrania brzmi wprost niesamowicie. W tym momencie wiem, że ta płyta nie pozwoli stopie stać w bezruchu nawet przez sekundę… Dziesięciominutowy „Remember” pełen żarliwej dynamiki i zmian tempa prowadzony jest przez płonącą gitarę Roesberga i grungowe organy Geralda Dellmana. Piękna, melancholijna melodia zaśpiewana przez gitarzystę półtorej minuty po ognistym wstępie przywołuje nastrój lirycznych Wishbone Ash… Nie czas jednak na sentymenty. Muzycy wściekle prą naprzód niczym pocisk wystrzelony z myśliwca F16 do namierzonego celu. Ależ jazda..! „I Often Wondered” rozpoczyna się mocnym wejściem saksofonu altowego (Roesberg), do którego dołączają bas, perkusja i organy. Te ostatnie wraz z gitarą tworzą doskonale rozumiejący się duet. Przyjemny wokal ustępuje miejsca gitarze, która zaczyna kolejne, pełne polotu solo… Całość wieńczy 13-minutowe „Perception”. Kilka basowych nutek, organy jak w otwarciu „Child In Time” Deep Purple, delikatne dźwięki talerza – cóż za miły wstęp przed wejściem gitary, która wchodzi 40 sekund później, a wraz z nią ekspresyjny wokal. Podoba mi się ten powolny rytm, ale zdaję sobie sprawę, że to tylko wstęp. Około czwartej minuty na czoło wysuwają się potężne organy z ciężką sekcją rytmiczną. Atmosfera robi się gęsta, wręcz ołowiana, muzyka nabiera szybszego tempa. Nieoczekiwanie w miejsce organów pojawia się klasycyzujący fortepian wpuszczając powiew świeżego powietrza robiąc więcej przestrzeni. Hammond powraca po krótkiej chwili, po czym gitara i sekcja rytmiczna płynnie przechodzą w jazz, a właściwie w jazz rockowy jam, do którego podłącza się saksofon. Jak na jedną kompozycję oryginalnie i ciekawie. Takie granie to ja kupuję w ciemno!!!

Nie każdy niemiecki zespół musiał być tak kuszący jak np. Can (obie grupy pochodziły z Kolonii) nie mniej SATIN WHALE jest (jednym z wielu) moich ulubionych zespołów, a „Desert Places” to jedna z tych ukochanych płyt tego okresu. Jedyne do czego mogę się przyczepić to dość marna okładka, ale do nich grupa nigdy nie miała szczęścia.

I wish I had this album back when I was younger it suits my tastes perfectly. Great vocals, tons of instrumental sections and especially that bluesy guitar that I could listen to endlessly. T2 might be a good comparison with those great guitar led songs. The bass player/ vocalist had a part in the writing all the songs. Should mention that the organ is prominent with the bass and we also get flute and sax, more of the former and both played by the talented guitarist!. They thank Klaus Schulze in the liner notes. Vocals are in English by the way and there's not an average song on here it's all pretty incredible to my ears. Only the cover art is average in my opinion.
"Deseret Places" opens with flute but it kicks into gear very quickly. A calm before 1 1/2 minutes then it kicks in again with organ leading this time. Soon it's the guitar leading the way. Vocals after 3 minutes as it settles some. man this is good. The flute is back after 4 minutes as the vocals stop. Pulsating organ then the vocals return after 5 minutes.

"Seasons Of Life" opens with multi-vocals as guitar, drums, bass and organ join in. Nice prominent bass here then the guitar leads as we get an instrumental section. It settles as the vocals return as these contrasts continue. A change in sound after 3 minutes. man that organ sounds amazing in this instrumental section. The guitar starts to lead before 5 minutes then the organ before the vocals return before 6 minutes.

"Remember" opens with guitar before piano and outbursts of power take over. The guitar then leads with bass, drums and organ supporting. A calm before 1 1/2 minutes with bluesy guitar as the vocals join in. It kicks in before 3 minutes as the vocals stop. Contrasts continue. Fantastic! The organ leads after 4 minutes then the guitar takes over and he's lighting it up. It settles some but then the guitar is back lighting it up. The organ takes the lead around 7 1/2 minutes before the guitar returns late. A melancholic tune.

"I Often Wonder" is where I hear the sax for the first time. Bass, drums and organ help out before the organ leads as the sax steps aside. The guitar and organ trade off 2 minutes in then we get vocals before 4 minutes. Nice. The guitar starts to solo after 4 1/2 minutes as the vocals stop. Vocals are back as contrasts continue.

"Perception" is the almost 13 minute closer. It opens with bass, keys and light guitar. A nice change before kicking in with the guitar leading. Vocals follow. I like that driving rhythm 3 1/2 minutes in as the vocals step aside and the organ plays over top. Piano after 5 1/2 minutes as the organ stops. It turns jazzy, well at least the bass is jazzy before 7 minutes as the guitar solos. The organ is back trading off with the guitar before 8 minutes. Sax 9 1/2 minutes in then it settles some before 11 minutes as the organ runs. It picks up with guitar before 12 minutes then calms down to the end.

My only experience with SATIN WHALE previously was with their 1978 live album which was more Symphonic and I'm not a fan of it. Apparently they went into that style with the followup to this one. I'll stick with this beauty.

Mellotron Storm

I found an original green Brain/Metronome LP pressing at a Eugene, Oregon record store. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! So I snatched it because it was sold at a rather cheap prince ($20), only to find out copies go for ten times that much, or even more so. This isn't the 2010 reprint, as that was apparently pressed on 180g vinyl, this looks like your typical '70s standard weight, probably 120g, plus it looks to have the usual wear and tear of a 1974 LP. I have heard of Satin Whale for ages (since about 2002) and glad to have bought this.
This is probably the closest to Krautrock they have ever did, but don't expect the experimentation of Can, Faust, Amon Duul II, early Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Agitation Free, etc. Here they often go in the Jethro Tull vein, but often go for extended jams, lots of nice guitar and organ soloing. The vocals are OK, nothing to write home, but at least not bad. Much of the album follows this same path, some short vocal passages, extended instrumental passages. One gripe could be, given its 1974 origins, that this album sounds rather behind the times and sounds more like a 1971 or '72 recording, but then you can say the same thing of Eloy's Floating or even Mythos' Dreamlab. But then from hearing my share of 1974 recordings, I came to the conclusion that the year, musically, seemed to have one foot in the early '70s (the guitar/Hammond organ approach was still commonplace) and the mid '70s (synthesizers were starting to play a bigger role). It's obvious that the Satin Whale was a bit behind the times for synths, as they still didn't use one, or more likely couldn't afford one (of course, they used synths on later albums like As a Keepsake). I don't let the "behind the times" sound bother me, it fits comfortably with your other prog albums released a bit earlier. This album gets a lot of praise in the prog community, and for good reason. It's too bad this was never properly reissued. It did received a bootleg reissue on CD on Germanophon, but it would do so much better had Repertoire been able to get their hands on it (after all, that label had reissued many great titles from the Brain label, it's probably either they can't get the rights to it, or the band members are embarrassed and don't want a reissue, just like Kraftwerk did with anything pre-Autobahn). I'm glad to own a turntable and the original LP, and lucky to find at a real decent price. Great stuff I can highly recommend!

Kapitalny, wydany w 1974 przez Brain Metronome (a brzmiący jak w 1972), debiutancki album niemieckiej formacji grającej ożywczy, pełen energii i dość melodyjny/chwytliwy rock progresywny (dużo Hammondów, dużo fletu, elektryczne gitary, mocne, gęste bębny) w klimacie najlepszych momentów Jane, Eloy, Out Of Focus, Nektar i Twenty Sixty Six And Then - ze szczyptą Jethro Tull (flet). Każdy utwór jest świetny - naprawdę brak wypełniaczy oraz późniejszego, artrockowego smęcenia. Reedycja na 28. urodziny. Debiutancka płyta MY MINDS MINE wydana oryginalnie w 1998 roku. 15 krótkich i szybkich numerów wściekłego grindcore'a, który przypadnie do gustu fanom wczesnego NAPALM DEATH, S.O.B., UNSEEN TERROR, HERESY.


'Between Soothing Consolation and Uncontrollable Madness' ukazuje rzeczywistość rozpiętą pomiędzy pozornym spokojem a narastającym chaosem. Już same tytuły utworów: Shutdown in Progress, Brainbox Suicide, I Own the World, Sick Media Sick czy Clone Devotion kreślą obraz społeczeństwa pogrążonego w kryzysie tożsamości, medialnym szumie, manipulacji i postępującej dehumanizacji.

Träume tworzy swoje brzmienie, czerpiąc z takich legendarnych zespołów punkowych i nowofalowych z lat 80. jak Siekiera i Zbombardowane Laleczki.
