On the stage of Jazz-à-Juan 2010, Joshua Redman achieves the feat of leading his two trios at the same time, and he does it with brilliance. Born in Berkeley in 1969 and trained at Harvard, this multi-influenced saxophonist is the son of the incredible musician Dewey Redman, himself a great jazz master and saxophonist. Here he immerses us in an atypical musical experience, where the symmetry created by this double trio is at its most captivating.

Since the 1990s, he has been collaborating with the most talented musicians of the new generation: Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove, Charlie Haden, but also previous generations, such as Chick Corea and Dave Brubeck. His name alone is now enough to evoke an unusual, technical, passionate and extremely creative playing. This concert is once again the tangible proof of an extraordinary musical capacity. The master leaves us simply amazed.

Zajebiście po dziś dzień pluję sobie w mordę, że przegapiłem prawdopodobnie jedyną okazję, by zobaczyć Wrathprayer na żywca. Było to co prawda jakieś sześć lat temu, ale niesmak i wkurwienie pozostały. Jaki ja żem głupi był, to ja nawet nie. Jedno jest natomiast pewne: twórcy “The Sun of Moloch: The Sublimation of Sulphur’s Essence Which Spawned Death and Life” to mistrzowie gruzu i aż dziw bierze, że trzeba było czekać ponad dekadę na nowy materiał…

I gdy w końcu po dwunastu latach wjechał w odtwarzacz “Enkoimeterion” zostałem szybko wrzucony do głębokiego grobowca pełnego trupów i namacalnego zła. Wrathprayer przez te dwanaście lat nie próżnował, a tylko dojrzewał sobie spokojnie głęboko pod trupią ziemią hodując należycie grobową zgniliznę która, gdy tylko odpowiednio dojrzała, została wydobyta przez uchylenie nagrobnej płyty, rozlewając tym samym po świecie chorą miksturę śmierć jak i czarciego metalu. Ten substrat nasiąkniętego odorem takich załóg jak Teitanblood czy chociażby Grave Miasma co rusz na “Enkoimeterion” otwiera kolejne przestrzenie dusznych i śmierdzących fetorem cmentarnych krypt i zakamarków, gdzie każdy chorobliwy riff czy też jadowity wokal wydostają się na wolność by powoli karmić się truchłem i inną przeżartą przez zło padliną (miażdżący, walcowaty miejscami “Mercy Begets Savagery”). I choć nie jest to już totalny ciężar jak na “In Utter Darkness”, to nadal jest to waga ultra ciężka, która niczym zamykający się sarkofag zgniata powoli każdą, nawet najmniejszą kość przy agonalnym krzyku skazanego na wieczne cierpienie (wyróżniający się “Seelenabgründe”).

Grobowa atmosfera, duszne brzmienie i opętany wokal czynią z “Enkoimeterion” esencję grobowego, śmierć / czarnego metalowego jadu i jeden z najlepszych tworów w tym nie pańskim roku. Posypało gruzem proszę państwa, oj posypało.

In this era of hyper-connection and instant gratification, the few artists who operate methodically, deliberately, and with painstaking attention to detail are those most likely to produce meritorious and enduring work. Though sparse, Wrathprayer’s output over the last 15 years has been among the most consistently impressive. Formed in 2006, the duo of guitarist and vocalist God of Torment and drummer Pestifer Fides released their demo in 2009 and, three years later, their debut full-length, The Sun of Moloch, co-released by NWN! and R. Forster’s Ross Bay Cult label. With that album, Wrathprayer, along with bands like Teitanblood and Necros Christos, helped usher in a wave of esoteric Black/Death metal—a novel synthesis of the two genres, infusing the plodding and intricate brutality of death metal with the occult disposition of black metal. Their last recordings were completed in 2014 but remained unreleased until they appeared on the 2017 split release with fellow Chileans Force of Darkness. After lying dormant for a decade, Wrathprayer now reemerge with a malevolent masterpiece entitled Enkoimeterion or the Enlivening of the Spiritual Heirs to Amalek, which finds the band advancing further toward the dark horizon of their sound. Written in 2019-2020 and recorded live in the studio two years later, Enkoimeterion, their second full-length release, showcases masterful composition and enhanced sound quality, far surpassing the band’s earlier work. The title refers to the abaton, or sleep chamber, located within the healing temples dedicated to the Greek god Asclepius, who visited the somnolent guests in their dreams to diagnose their illnesses and reveal the cures—a therapeutic approach to dreaming known as “incubation.” Wrathprayer’s invocation of such arcane concepts is neither haphazard nor ironic; their lyrics offer philosophical and metaphysical insight woven together with poetic fervor. Those inclined can pore over the body of lyrics presented here, untangling and deciphering the various themes, searching for the locus of meaning within. The music is likewise evocative and complex. After opening with a short symphonic excerpt from a work by the modern Chilean composer Prospero Bisquertt Prado, Wrathprayer descend into cavernous regions, immersed in a deep darkness illuminated by hallucinatory visions. Permeating the album is a striated network of bold labyrinthine riffs, sharp-edged and steeped in crimson, drawn taut across the roiling percussive frenzy of the drums. The six new tracks presented here coalesce into something greater, a composite whole that feels complete and expertly composed—an album that stands out amid the uninspired detritus produced in the last decade. As with Wrathprayer’s debut album, Enkoimeterion bears the imprimatur of one of the most visionary occult artists of the last century, Denis Forkas, whose cover art provides the final element, connecting the tripartite presentation of idea, imagery, and sound.

BLOOD MONOLITH is an emerging death metal juggernaut featuring members of Nails, Undeath, Ulthar, and Genocide Pact. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Shelby Lermo (Nails, Ulthar) in 2023 after his exit from Vastum, the goal was to create something even uglier, weirder, and more aggressive operating out of his new home base in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area. Guitarist Tommy Wall (Undeath) joined Lermo, and the music for BLOOD MONOLITH’s debut LP was soon written. Bassist Nolan (Genocide Pact, Shitstorm) and drummer Nadia Tydings-Lynch (Deliriant Nerve, Brain Tourniquet) rounded out the lineup.

The band’s location ties deeply into their sound, as this epicenter of mass murder and corruption provides constant fuel for boiled-down anger (as well as a rich history of rebellion through music). The album’s title, The Calling of Fire, invokes the internal and external summoning of rage to spit in the face of that seemingly unstoppable, towering evil, and the sonic excess within lands like a broad-daylight assassination.

BLOOD MONOLITH’s unique and unconventional concept and aesthetic sets them apart from the plethora of interchangeable death metal bands currently inhabiting the scene, and their music is miles beyond them as well. There is a DIY mindset and ethic present, but despite the punk and grindcore pedigree of its members, BLOOD MONOLITH plays crazed death metal of the highest order, influenced as much by classics like Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse as modern innovators like Defeated Sanity and Dead Congregation. Adorned with cover art by legendary Rudimentary Peni frontman Nick Blinko, The Calling of Fire is a testament to all things musically frenzied and extreme, a brutally succinct statement of nihilism in a world beyond salvation.

To jedna z najbardziej kultowych i najrzadszych brytyjskich płyt tzw. private press z lat 70. i wśród kolekcjonerów długo funkcjonowała niemal jako legenda. Album został nagrany praktycznie domowymi metodami przez Olivera Chaplina a całość powstała w duchu pełnej niezależności jako pomieszanie psychodelii, acid folku i eksperymentalnego bluesa. Nagrania wykonano na 4-ścieżkowym magnetofonie TEAC, bez syntezatorów, często z użyciem pojedynczego mikrofonu. To nadaje płycie bardzo surowe, organiczne i momentami wręcz „halucynacyjne” brzmienie. Krótkie utwory przechodzą jeden w drugi a muzka momentami przypomina stylistykę Syda Barretta, a chwilami eksperymenty Captain Beefheart.

Part-time farmer / musician Oliver Chaplin is the person behind one of the rarest private pressings from the UK.

His cult masterpiece “Standing Stone” was recorded in early 1974 at a remote farm in Wales, using a portable 4-track Teac reel-to-reel machine. Helped by his brother Chris at the controls (an experienced BBC engineer who had worked on Syd Barrett sessions), surrounded by animals and “small winged creatures”, Oliver sang and played acoustic and electric guitars filtered though tape echo, distortion and multi-tracking, creating a very unique sound, a kind of DIY mutant-psychedelic-blues (think Captain Beefheart) which sounded years ahead of its time. Despite the lo-fi nature of the recording, the sound quality is amazing and timeless.

Only 250 copies of the album were pressed and it even caught the attention of the Virgin label, who were interested in distribution but Oliver finally refused their offer. Musicians like JJ Cale expressed interest in Oliver’s music, inviting him to a jam session but in the end, Oliver decided he was not interested in the music business and left Wales to travel around Europe.

He remains a kind of a mysterious figure and we’re proud to offer a new, long-awaited reissue of “Standing Stone”, sanctioned by him.

Trzeci album szwajcarskiego zespołu skapunkowego. Przez 20 lat istnienia zespołu w ośmioosobowym składzie doszło tylko do jednej zmiany personalnej. Zmiany nastąpiły jednak w warstwie muzycznej. W ciągu dwóch dekad brzmienie dojrzało - od nieporadnego punkowego i skaowego grania do określanego przez nich samych jako High Energy Horns’n’Roll.
