'Spawn of Almighty Essence' to bardzo mocny, przyjemny i satysfakcjonujący kawałek brutalności!
Jeśli istnieje jedno słowo, które podsumowuje ten album, to prawdopodobnie jest to eklektyzm. Podczas gdy zdecydowana większość zespołów, które grają brutalniejszy rodzaj death metalu, często skupia się na jednym konkretnym rodzaju ekstremum, SCHIZOGEN wyraźnie poświęcił trzy lata od debiutu na skrupulatną pracę nad swoim brzmieniem i stylem, aby był on tak wszechobecny, jak to tylko możliwe.

Ten album wprowadza elementy tech death metalu, slam, a nawet melo-death, co oznacza, że ​​prawdopodobnie każdy fan death metalu znajdzie tu coś dla siebie. I really got to hand it to Jason Tipton at Willowtip Records. He has a unique ability to find some of the most intricately brutal death metal bands (Defeated Sanity, Putridity, Abysmal Torment, etc). Ukraine’s Schizogen are no exception with their 2020 2nd full length Spawn of Almighty Essence.

Musically these guys waste zero time beginning to pummel with the first track “Birth of The Great Mass”. Schizogen are a four piece and with only one guitarist the overall production on this is quick massive. Pun completely intended. The guitar work of Grinder is also over the place. I would compare it to the frenzied fretboard work of Diego Sanchez from the almighty Disgorge. It makes me wonder how many pinch harmonics he averaged per song. Grinder along with bassist Pavel work extremely well together which with not having a second guitarist is pretty crucial for these type of arrangements. The drum work of Vadim is quite ferocious and provides plenty of tempo changes.

Lyrically a lot of the song concepts seem to revolve around biological catastrophes. Tracks like “Roots of New Civilization” and “Biological Damage Processes” really speak to these themes as well as the awesome cover art done by Marco Hasmann. Vocalist Pablo is not reinventing the wheel by any means but his vocals due fit the music quite well. I really enjoy the contrast between the whammy bar dive breakdowns into more melodic phrasing. Tracks like “The Genes Recoding” and “The Physical Essence of The Devourer” are great examples of this. At 36 minutes plus this is a fantastic 2nd album and another great addition to the Willowtip roster.

Mago de Oz to hiszpański zespół folk metalowy założony w 1988 roku w Madrycie z inicjatywy perkusisty Txusa di Fellatio. Grupa wyróżnia się unikalnym połączeniem heavy metalu z muzyką celtycką i folkową, wykorzystując takie instrumenty jak skrzypce, flet czy dudę, obok klasycznego rockowego instrumentarium. Jeśli ktoś wyczekiwał, że w 2020 roku na rynku reedycji pojawi się jakiś prawdziwy ‘killer’ to bez wątpienia wiadomość, która dotarła do nas już jakiś czas temu spełniła te oczekiwania w co najmniej 200 %. No ale nie może być inaczej, jeśli jedna z najwybitniejszych płyt w historii muzyki zostaje wydana w wersji 26 (!!!) dyskowej. Album In The Court Of The Crimson King o którym już pisałem na naszym blogu nie wymaga żadnej rekomendacji. Powiedziano o nim chyba wszystko i nie sądzę, aby ktokolwiek, kto zagląda na Rockową płytotekę mógł go nie znać na pamięć. Dlatego zamiast filozofować od razu skupimy się na zawartości najnowszego wydawnictwa legendarnych – King Crimson. Właściwie box nazywać się będzie The Complete 1969 Recordings, ale ponieważ w tym roku zespół nagrał tylko jeden (debiutancki) album i tak wszystko w tym pudełku kręcić się będzie wokół jego zawartości.

Oczywiście opisanie i przeanalizowanie całej zawartości boxu wymagało by co najmniej habilitacji, dlatego zerkniemy na wszystko w nieco bardziej powierzchowny i przystępny sposób. Zaznaczmy jednak od razu, że w zestawie mają się znaleźć WSZYSTKIE nagrania sesyjne oraz mixy (o jakich wiadomo że istnieją), komplet zachowanych rejestracji koncertowych i radiowych z 1969 roku oraz wybór nagrań z okresu przed wydaniem legendarnego debiutu.

Wydawnictwo rozpoczynają albumy live. Na siedmiu dyskach zamieszczono wydawane już wcześniej w różnych seriach i konfiguracjach legendarne występy zespołu m.in. w Hyde Parku czy Fillmore West i East. Ponoć specjalnie dla tej edycji wykonano nowe masteringi i zgranie materiałów z nośników źródłowych, co zauważalnie poprawiło ich jakość. Kolejne pięć kompaktów do wszelkie warianty zasadniczego albumu. A więc zremasterowana wersja z 1969 roku, remixy z lat 2009 i 2019 oraz masa dodatków, zawartych w poprzednich edycjach. Wreszcie to co chyba najciekawsze, czyli ostatnie 7 dysków.

Zawierają one na nowo zmiksowane do stereo wszystkie istniejące zapisy z sesji nagraniowej. Z jednej strony słuchanie np. 11 podejść do i Epitaph może być nieco nużące, ale z drugiej przecież wszyscy od zawsze marzymy, aby poznać jak najwięcej zachowanych outtake’ów naszych ukochanych zespołów. Dodatkowe dwie płyty audio to wybór na nowo zgranych i zremasterowanych nagrań zespołu Giles, Giles & Fripp z 1968 roku oraz CD z kapitalnymi rejestracjami dla Radia BBC (szkoda, że zachowało się ich tylko pięć). W pudełku znajdziemy jeszcze dwa DVD i cztery Blu-Raye – z masą nagrań zamieszczonych już na opisywanych kompaktach z tym, że podanych w innych formatach dźwiękowych (pliki stereo w wysokiej rozdzielczości, miksy przestrzenne w wielu wariantach, itp). Prawdziwą ucztą może okazać się nowy mix Stevena Wilsona wykonany w technologii Dolby Atmos (podobno solówki i mellotrony „krążą tam nad głową”, a instrumentalna sekcja w Moonchild, otrzymuje całkiem nową jakość). Posłuchamy – ocenimy. Całość zapakowano w pudło wielkości winylu, obok płyt zawierające oczywiście gruba 40-stronicowa książkę z wszelkimi informacjami i notkami o zamieszczonych w boxie nagraniach.

Moją pierwszą reakcją na wieść o przygotowywanym zestawie była myśl: super, ale na pewno nie kupię, bo i tak nigdy nie będę słuchał. Ale że wydawnictwo dotyczy, kto wie czy nie najważniejszej płyty w historii rocka progresywnego powoli zaczynam się przełamywać.

The complete audio history of one of the most important debut albums of all time is presented across 26 discs in this boxed set. Featuring a new Dolby Atmos mix by Steven Wilson, 6 CDs' worth of session material on CD & Blu-Ray for the first time (fully mixed by David Singleton), a further disc of newly compiled studio material, the box also includes the original studio album, every alternate take known to exist, every mix known to exist, all live recordings known to exist & a selection of pre/Crimson 1968 recordings.

As with the previous seven boxed sets in the series, The Complete 1969 Recordings is housed in a vinyl sized box complete with a booklet featuring an introduction by Robert Fripp, notes about the source tapes from David Singleton, sleeve-notes by King Crimson biographer Sid Smith, previously unseen photos from the recordings sessions, additional memorabilia and a protective outer sleeve.

Having done 5.1 Surround Sound mixes for both the 40th & 50th-anniversary editions of the album, Steven Wilson was able to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by Atmos mixing, allowing for far greater movement within the mix itself. Jeśli ktoś wyczekiwał, że w 2020 roku na rynku reedycji pojawi się jakiś prawdziwy ‘killer’ to bez wątpienia wiadomość, która dotarła do nas już jakiś czas temu spełniła te oczekiwania w co najmniej 200 %. No ale nie może być inaczej, jeśli jedna z najwybitniejszych płyt w historii muzyki zostaje wydana w wersji 26 (!!!) dyskowej. Album In The Court Of The Crimson King o którym już pisałem na naszym blogu nie wymaga żadnej rekomendacji. Powiedziano o nim chyba wszystko i nie sądzę, aby ktokolwiek, kto zagląda na Rockową płytotekę mógł go nie znać na pamięć. Dlatego zamiast filozofować od razu skupimy się na zawartości najnowszego wydawnictwa legendarnych – King Crimson. Właściwie box nazywać się będzie The Complete 1969 Recordings, ale ponieważ w tym roku zespół nagrał tylko jeden (debiutancki) album i tak wszystko w tym pudełku kręcić się będzie wokół jego zawartości.

Oczywiście opisanie i przeanalizowanie całej zawartości boxu wymagało by co najmniej habilitacji, dlatego zerkniemy na wszystko w nieco bardziej powierzchowny i przystępny sposób. Zaznaczmy jednak od razu, że w zestawie mają się znaleźć WSZYSTKIE nagrania sesyjne oraz mixy (o jakich wiadomo że istnieją), komplet zachowanych rejestracji koncertowych i radiowych z 1969 roku oraz wybór nagrań z okresu przed wydaniem legendarnego debiutu.

Wydawnictwo rozpoczynają albumy live. Na siedmiu dyskach zamieszczono wydawane już wcześniej w różnych seriach i konfiguracjach legendarne występy zespołu m.in. w Hyde Parku czy Fillmore West i East. Ponoć specjalnie dla tej edycji wykonano nowe masteringi i zgranie materiałów z nośników źródłowych, co zauważalnie poprawiło ich jakość. Kolejne pięć kompaktów do wszelkie warianty zasadniczego albumu. A więc zremasterowana wersja z 1969 roku, remixy z lat 2009 i 2019 oraz masa dodatków, zawartych w poprzednich edycjach. Wreszcie to co chyba najciekawsze, czyli ostatnie 7 dysków.

Zawierają one na nowo zmiksowane do stereo wszystkie istniejące zapisy z sesji nagraniowej. Z jednej strony słuchanie np. 11 podejść do i Epitaph może być nieco nużące, ale z drugiej przecież wszyscy od zawsze marzymy, aby poznać jak najwięcej zachowanych outtake’ów naszych ukochanych zespołów. Dodatkowe dwie płyty audio to wybór na nowo zgranych i zremasterowanych nagrań zespołu Giles, Giles & Fripp z 1968 roku oraz CD z kapitalnymi rejestracjami dla Radia BBC (szkoda, że zachowało się ich tylko pięć). W pudełku znajdziemy jeszcze dwa DVD i cztery Blu-Raye – z masą nagrań zamieszczonych już na opisywanych kompaktach z tym, że podanych w innych formatach dźwiękowych (pliki stereo w wysokiej rozdzielczości, miksy przestrzenne w wielu wariantach, itp). Prawdziwą ucztą może okazać się nowy mix Stevena Wilsona wykonany w technologii Dolby Atmos (podobno solówki i mellotrony „krążą tam nad głową”, a instrumentalna sekcja w Moonchild, otrzymuje całkiem nową jakość). Posłuchamy – ocenimy. Całość zapakowano w pudło wielkości winylu, obok płyt zawierające oczywiście gruba 40-stronicowa książkę z wszelkimi informacjami i notkami o zamieszczonych w boxie nagraniach.

Moją pierwszą reakcją na wieść o przygotowywanym zestawie była myśl: super, ale na pewno nie kupię, bo i tak nigdy nie będę słuchał. Ale że wydawnictwo dotyczy, kto wie czy nie najważniejszej płyty w historii rocka progresywnego powoli zaczynam się przełamywać.

Featuring a new Dolby Atmos mix by Steven Wilson, 6 CDs' worth of session material on CD & Blu-Ray for the first time (fully mixed by David Singleton), a further disc of newly compiled studio material, the box also includes the original studio album, every alternate take known to exist, every mix known to exist, all live recordings known to exist & a selection of pre/Crimson 1968 recordings.

As with the previous seven boxed sets in the series, The Complete 1969 Recordings is housed in a vinyl sized box complete with a booklet featuring an introduction by Robert Fripp, notes about the source tapes from David Singleton, sleeve-notes by King Crimson biographer Sid Smith, previously unseen photos from the recordings sessions, additional memorabilia and a protective outer sleeve.

Having done 5.1 Surround Sound mixes for both the 40th & 50th-anniversary editions of the album, Steven Wilson was able to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by Atmos mixing, allowing for far greater movement within the mix itself. Wydany przez Metronome w 1971 roku doskonały, klasyczny album duńskiej progresywnej formacji o pełnym brzmieniu opartym na organach Hammonda i soczystych dźwiękach gitar. Dość długie, 6-8 minutowe utwory o inteligentnych aranżacjach przypominająca najciekawsze nagrania brytyjskiej, genialnej formacji If a taże Hannibal (z UK) i duńskiej, popularnej grupy Midnight Sun. Na płycie dominowały atrakcyjne partie saksofonu i fletu, momentami całkiem ciężkie, intensywne partie gitar a także obligatoryjne wówczas brzmienia organów Hammonda. Na uwagą zwracały bardzo chwytliwe kompozycje, doskonała, pełna oddechu produkcja i przestrzenne brzmienie. Płyta niemal idealna! Oryginalny, duński winyl w idealnym stanie sprzedaje się po 1200 euro!



Nie wiedzieć czemu, ale „stary” rock ze Skandynawii jest u nas prawie nieznany. Zespoły takie jak Culpeper’s Orchard z Danii, Elonkorjuu z Finlandii, czy Life ze Szwecji (by wymienić choćby tylko po jednym reprezentancie z tych krajów) bardzo popularne, można by wręcz powiedzieć, kultowe TAM, przeciętnemu fanowi muzyki w kraju nad Wisłą raczej mówią niewiele, lub nic. Sam doświadczyłem tego na własnym przykładzie odkrywając skandynawskie arcydzieła płytowe dość późno. Dlatego też postanowiłem, że co jakiś czas w Rockowym Zawrocie Głowy pojawiać się będą wpisy przybliżające perły naszych północnych sąsiadów.

Warto było podjąć trud w zdobyciu tych, niekiedy bardzo rzadkich, płyt z lat 70-tych. Okazuje się bowiem, że poziomem wykonawczym wcale nie odstawały od tego, co reprezentowała czołówka brytyjskiego rocka tamtego okresu, a w niektórych przypadkach wręcz ją przewyższała.

Takim zespołem z tej tzw. „górnej półki” był duński, a konkretnie kopenhaski, THORS HAMMER ze swoją jedyną (niestety!) płytą zatytułowaną po prostu „Thors Hammer” wydaną w 1971r.

Okładka płyty raczej nie zachwyca do jej nabycia (tylna strona ratuje odrobinę jej pozytywny wizerunek); w moim prywatnym rankingu „najbrzydszych okładek” pewnie znalazłaby się wysoko.. Na szczęście o zawartości muzycznej nie decyduje opakowanie. Warto o tym pamiętać!

THORS HAMMER grało muzykę progresywną w połączeniu z jazzem i jeśli miałbym tę grupę stylistycznie porównać do jakichś pokrewnych zespołów, to wymieniłbym tu Colosseum, Traffic, Hannibal, czy Nosferatu. Równorzędnym bowiem instrumentem na tej płycie obok gitary jest saksofon. I najczęściej jest tak, że oba te instrumenty prowadzą ze sobą dialog, jak choćby w najdłuższym, 13-to minutowym „Not Worth Saying”, czy w zamykającym album utworze „Believe In What You Want”. Po krótkim wstępie następuje kapitalna galopada saksofonu z sekcją rytmiczną, od której dech w piersiach zapiera. Ależ jazda! Potem saksofon milknie i do głosu dochodzi gitara. Improwizacja pełną parą. No i mamy tu też Hammondy! Miód na uszy!

W zasadzie każdy z pięciu zamieszczonych na tej płycie utworów można byłoby tak opisać i nad każdym się zachwycać. Ta płyta nie ma żadnych słabych stron. Perła w koronie skandynawskiego rocka godna najszczerszego polecenia! Mimo, że zespół nie przebił się w epoce jego jedyny album jest jednym z najbardziej poszukiwanych i pożądanych tytułów. Gorąco polecam!

This was such a surprise as I just wasn't expecting a lot. I had heard the opener "Mexico" previously, and while I liked it, it did have this commercial sounding chorus, and I sort of expected this would be status quo for the whole album. Not! Recorded in January and February of 1971 at Metronome studios in Copenhagen, this would be the only album that this Danish band would release. The drummer is responsible for the unfortunate cover art. A six piece with the vocalist doing just that, plus a sax player, along with the usual instruments.
The sax brings in a nice jazz flavour and some of these guys would go on to play in jazz bands like DROPS, ENTRANCE and HEAVY JOKER. Perhaps the biggest pleasure I got from this was that OUT OF FOCUS sound because of the vocals mostly towards the end of the longest piece, the 13 minute "Not Worth Saying", and it continues with the next song "Blind Gypsy Woman". Many do not like the singer, but I do. And while the opener has a radio friendly chorus, I looked forward to hearing this each time. An interesting guitar solo as well around 2 1/2 minutes in.

The 13 minute second track is such an adventerous piece. I still haven't really grasped it yet, but it is full of highlights. The guitar, sax, organ and upfront bass all shine here. How about that guitar solo after 6 1/2 minutes. That OUT OF FOCUS vibe starts around 11 1/2 minutes, and continues to start "Blind Gypsy Woman". And really my top three are the final three tracks beginning with this one. The OUT OF FOCUS style is heard early and late on this one with the middle being such a treat as this band sets the soundscape on fire. So much going on as well.

"Believe In What You Want" just sounds amazing throughout it's 9 minute run. The sax and organ especially. I also love that calm around 7 minutes in with electric piano, sax, bass and beats. So good! The closer "Evasive Dreams Beyond" is the shortest track at 3 1/2 minutes. Sounds like a jam, and we get more electric piano thankfully with sax again. It's a beautiful thing. Well I just found a new band and album that I can point to as being one of the best from Denmark. The jazz element makes this one a keeper in my musical world. Closer to 4.5 stars.

Mellotron Storm


Thor's Hammer are a bit of an unknown bunch picked out from the 70's prog scene, but usually in my experiences obscure bands produce the best music, and that's definitely true here. The band's sole album and debut was released in 1971 and is as energetic as the best of them.
A problem that I've found with eclectic prog bands is they feature too much emphasis on experimentation and not enough on, well, the music. Here however Thor's Hammer combines all sorts of dazzling elements, like operatic rock, symphonic rock, and hell why not throw in a few crunchy riffs here and there. It truly takes a lot of effort to be a consistent, but TH pull it off very well. Although extremely eclectic, the album is refined even when it gets to it's most climactic points. As for jazz influences, they aren't exactly prominent aside from Simon Koppel's drumming and Jesper Neehammer's occasional saxophone breaks. Hell, King Crimson used saxophone and I still don't consider them to be very jazzy. The song selection, although short is extremely well done and each track has careful time and care put into it. A major highlight is 'Not Worth Saying', a powerhouse of a song where there is not one, but two solos from guitarist Michael Brunn and from Koppel. I would sort of say that the following track 'Blind Gypsy Woman' is so similar in atmosphere that it is just a continuation of the former.

The only problem I would say I have with the album is after the third track the erratic powerful nature the album has starts to lose it's punch; there aren't any really breaking points or slower sections. I'd hate to parallel this with VDGG but on Pawn Hearts, after the loud rocker 'Lemmings', 'Man-Erg' started with a beautiful piano opening to sort of calm you down and prepare you for the rest. If the album were to have at least a few interludes that calmed the atmosphere a bit, this would be close to a perfect experience. Other than that I have no problems except for the cover. But I mean if the music's good what does that matter?

So I'd suggest take a look at this one. Eclectic prog, next to jazz-fusion is the prog sub-genre where I found has usually the best musicians. Give these guys more attention because they deserve it.

The closer "Evasive Dreams Beyond" is the shortest track at 3 1/2 minutes. Sounds like a jam, and we get more electric piano thankfully with sax again. It's a beautiful thing. Well I just found a new band and album that I can point to as being one of the best from Denmark. The jazz element makes this one a keeper in my musical world. Closer to 4.5 stars.

Mellotron Storm


Thor's Hammer are a bit of an unknown bunch picked out from the 70's prog scene, but usually in my experiences obscure bands produce the best music, and that's definitely true here. The band's sole album and debut was released in 1971 and is as energetic as the best of them.
A problem that I've found with eclectic prog bands is they feature too much emphasis on experimentation and not enough on, well, the music. Here however Thor's Hammer combines all sorts of dazzling elements, like operatic rock, symphonic rock, and hell why not throw in a few crunchy riffs here and there. It truly takes a lot of effort to be a consistent, but TH pull it off very well. Although extremely eclectic, the album is refined even when it gets to it's most climactic points. As for jazz influences, they aren't exactly prominent aside from Simon Koppel's drumming and Jesper Neehammer's occasional saxophone breaks. Hell, King Crimson used saxophone and I still don't consider them to be very jazzy. The song selection, although short is extremely well done and each track has careful time and care put into it. A major highlight is 'Not Worth Saying', a powerhouse of a song where there is not one, but two solos from guitarist Michael Brunn and from Koppel. I would sort of say that the following track 'Blind Gypsy Woman' is so similar in atmosphere that it is just a continuation of the former.

The only problem I would say I have with the album is after the third track the erratic powerful nature the album has starts to lose it's punch; there aren't any really breaking points or slower sections. I'd hate to parallel this with VDGG but on Pawn Hearts, after the loud rocker 'Lemmings', 'Man-Erg' started with a beautiful piano opening to sort of calm you down and prepare you for the rest. If the album were to have at least a few interludes that calmed the atmosphere a bit, this would be close to a perfect experience. Other than that I have no problems except for the cover. But I mean if the music's good what does that matter?

So I'd suggest take a look at this one. Eclectic prog, next to jazz-fusion is the prog sub-genre where I found has usually the best musicians. Give these guys more attention because they deserve it.

"Clockwork Sky" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Swedish technical extreme metal act Terminal Function. The album was released through Willowtip Records in September 2015. Terminal Function was formed in 1998 and released several demos before releasing their debut full-length studio album "Measuring The Abstract" in 2008. So it´s been 7 years between albums, which even in this day and age is a pretty long recording break. There´s been one lineup change since the debut as bassist Lars Söderberg has left the band. Guitarist Stefan Aronsson handles the bass on "Clockwork Sky".
The music on the album is technical extreme metal strongly influenced by fellow countrymen Meshuggah. At times to the point of "Clockwork Sky" being what I would characterize as a worship release. Thankfully Terminal Function do incorporate other elements too, that seperates them from their more famous countrymen, but there are overall more similarities than differences. Some of the differences include occasional use of clean vocals, keyboards, and the occasional use of more regular rhythms and riffs played in conventional time signatures. The similarities are heavy downtuned riffs and rhythms played in odd time signatures, relatively one-dimensional raw shouting vocals, and fusion/jazz oriented guitar solos.

The material on the 11 track, 40:41 minutes long album is generally well written and relatively catchy although it´s not necessarily memorable in the long run. The musicianship is on a high level on all posts, and it´s hard not to be impressed by what these guys play. They may not compose the most original sounding material, but they sure can play. The sound production is raw, powerful, and suits the music, so upon conclusion there are many positive things to say about "Clockwork Sky". The lack of an original style and a very obvious clone factor are negatives that drag my rating down though, and in the end a 3.5 star (70%) rating is warranted. If you are more forgiving than I am regarding the high clone factor, you can put another half star on top of that.
