Tworzą go: wokalista Sergio Pizzorno, basista Chris Edwards (obaj od 1997 roku), perkusista Ian Matthews (od 2005 roku) i gitarzysta Tim Carter (od 2021 roku). Współzałożyciel zespołu, wokalista Tom Meighan opuścił zespół w lipcu 2020 roku, a Pizzorno, dotychczas drugi wokalista i gitarzysta, zajął jego miejsce. Wydany z początkiem 1971 roku przez RCA Victor (i wart obecnie na winylu 400-500 euro) jedyny, za to kapitalny LP Brytyjczyków zawierał ciężkie, bardzo rasowe granie (z lekkimi elementami bluesa i prog-rocka) w tradycyjnym brytyjskim stylu, przypominającym trochę debiut Budgie, płyty May Blitz, debiut Free oraz Leaf Hound. Pozbawiona jakiejkolwiek promocji (i będąca prawdopodobnie zwykłym, pozbawionym skrupułów odpisem podatkowym wytwórni płytowej) płyta przepadła na rynku - jak setki innych tytułów wydanych przez wielkie wytwórnie na przełomie lat 60. i 70.
Popularności z pewnością nie przysporzyła grupie koszmarna, wyglądająca jak pochlapana błotem, okładka. Aż trudno uwierzyć, że podpisał się pod nią znany z debiutu Black Sabbath i płyt grup Spring, Indian Summer, Affinity, Colosseum - Keef... Po kilku miesiącach, dwóch muzyków Stonehouse utworzyło łagodniejszy i bardziej progresywny zespół Asgard.

Tesla to amerykański zespół rockowy, powstały w 1984 pod nazwą City Kidd. Członkowie zmienili nazwę zespołu na Tesla w 1986 w czasie nagrywania ich pierwszego albumu, Mechanical Resonance. Przyczynił się do tego menadżer zespołu, który twierdził, że z nazwą City Kidd zespół nie ma szans zaistnieć. Twórcami zespołu byli: Jeff Keith - wokalista, Frank Hannon i Tommy Skeoch - gitarzyści, Brian Wheat - basista oraz Troy Luccketta - perkusista. Muzyka Tesli jest często przyrównywana do hard rocka lub heavy metalu. W rzeczywistości w utworach Tesli występuje dużo zagrywek bluesowych. Ostatecznie ich styl wyznaczyła trasa koncertowa odbyta z zespołami takimi, jak: Def Leppard czy Poison. Z drugiej strony wizerunek, który starali się stworzyć był bardzo podobny do Aerosmith. Wstawka zawiera najnowszy album Tesli - kompilacja coverów innych artystów.

„Earthquake Country” – tak miał się nazywać trzeci album grupy Grateful Dead. Rick Griffin , który zaprojektował okładkę płyty fascynował się palindromami , czyli wyrażeniami które czytane od lewej do prawej i od prawej do lewej brzmią tak samo. Zaproponował grupie taki palindrom i chłopcy to przyjęli. Tak więc trzeci album znany jest wszystkim pod tytułem „Aoxomoxoa”.

Pod koniec 1968 roku zespół wszedł do studia Pacific Recording w San Mateo w Kalifornii i na 16 ścieżkowym magnetofonie zaczął nagrywać utwory, które znalazły się potem na ich kolejnej płycie.

W tym czasie do zespołu doszedł nowy keyboardzista Tom Constanten i również tutaj mamy pierwsze w pełni udane próby tworzenia niezapomnianych perełek przez trwający już do końca istnienia grupy duet Garcia-Hunter.

W stosunku do poprzednika utwory na płycie są bardziej wysublimowane, okryte mgiełką tajemniczości. „St.Stephen”, który otwiera płytę, nadaje ton albumowi. Dźwięk jest tu ostrzejszy i bardziej bezpośredni niż na poprzednim albumie, ale zachował się ten kosmiczny pył jaki towarzyszył przy słuchaniu „Anthem of the Sun”. Mamy też parę utworów akustycznych i to one właśnie tworzą klimat tajemniczości. „Rosemary” , „Doin’ That Rag” czy „Mountains Of the Moon” pokazują ekipę Jerry’ego Garcii w zupełnie innym wymiarze. Weźmy choćby ten ostatni tytuł – żałośnie liryczna gitara akustyczna wzbogacona o klawesyn prowadzi nas w nieznane obszary naszego mózgu. Najbardziej psychodelicznym, a zarazem odjechanym w kosmos jest utwór „What’s Become of the Baby”. Garcia nie chciał wykorzystywać tu żadnych instrumentów, a cały utwór zbudowany jest na głosach muzyków, które zostały poddane obróbce w studio. Dodano echa, pogłosy i różne zmiksowane efekty, dla nas, słuchaczy niesamowity spacer w otchłanie kosmosu. Kończący płytę „Cosmic Charlie” jest z jednej strony świetnym utworem , który idealnie pasuje na koniec płyty, ale też jest zapowiedzią tego, co będzie się działo na następnym albumie.

Autor okładki, zafascynowany - co widać na powyższej grafice - palindromami, zasugerował tytuł, który będzie brzmiał tak samo czytany od prawej i lewej strony. Wspólnie z Robertem Hunterem - nowym współpracownikiem zespołu, od tamtej pory autorem większości tekstów - wymyślił nic nie znaczące słowo "Aoxomoxoa". A skoro mowa o okładce, warto dodać, że niektórzy twierdzą, że w umieszczonym na niej logo zespołu można dopatrzyć się zdania "We Ate the Acid". Cóż, liczba liter się zgadza, niektórych nie trzeba nawet zmieniać, ale żeby faktycznie coś takiego dostrzec, samemu chyba trzeba zażyć kwas.

Choć w przeciwieństwie do swojego poprzednika, "Anthem of the Sun", longplay składa się głównie z konwencjonalnych utworów, w całości zarejestrowanych w studiu, nagrania znów ciągnęły się przez wiele miesięcy. Zespół nagrał w tym czasie album dwukrotnie - pierwsza wersja została odrzucona, gdy muzycy dowiedzieli się o powstaniu 16-ścieżkowego rejestratora dźwięku (dotąd korzystali z 8-ścieżkowego). Po zakupie nowego sprzętu, zaczęli nagrania od nowa. Nowe możliwości wykorzystali przede wszystkim w najbardziej eksperymentalnym fragmencie, ośmiominutowym "What's Become of the Baby", w którym w ogóle nie pojawiają się instrumenty, a jedynie przetworzone, zwielokrotnione partie wokalne. Efekt jest bardzo intrygujący i klimatyczny. Reszta albumu, jak już wspominałem, to już tradycyjne piosenki. Przeważnie łączące chwytliwe melodie z zadziornym, rockowym brzmieniem (np. "St. Stephen", "Doin' That Rag", "China Cat Sunflower" i "Cosmic Charlie"). Nowością w repertuarze grupy jest natomiast granie akustyczne ("Dupree's Diamond Blues", "Rosemary", "Mountains of the Moon"), które na kolejnych studyjnych albumach będzie odgrywać bardziej prominentną rolę.

"Aoxomoxoa" to bardzo przyjemny album, ale nie ukrywam, że brakuje mi tutaj jamowego grania, z jakiego słynęły koncerty Grateful Dead. Dopiero na kompaktowych reedycjach z XXI wieku dołączono trzy kilkunastominutowe jamy, zarejestrowane przez zespół w studiu na samym początku sesji. Szczególnie porywająco wypada "Clementine Jam", ale "Nobody's Spoonful Jam" i "The Eleven Jam" nie zostają daleko w tyle - szkoda, że przynajmniej jeden z nich nie trafił na oryginalny album. Wspomniane reedycje zawierają także lepszą, koncertową wersję "Cosmic Charlie".

Szczególnie porywająco wypada "Clementine Jam", ale "Nobody's Spoonful Jam" i "The Eleven Jam" nie zostają daleko w tyle - szkoda, że przynajmniej jeden z nich nie trafił na oryginalny album. Weezer to amerykańska grupa rockowa z Los Angeles w Kalifornii. Zespół powstał w 1992 roku w Los Angeles. Jego założycielami byli Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp i Jason Cropper. W 1993 roku podpisali kontrakt z wytwórnią DGC (później Interscope), w której wydali większość swoich płyt. Podczas nagrań pierwszego albumu („The Blue Album”) z zespołu został wyrzucony Jason Cropper. Jego miejsce zajął Brian Bell. Trudno powiedzieć, co wydarzyło się między tym albumem, a debiutanckim nokautem. Rzut oka na opis płyty daje jednak trochę do myślenia. Tym razem za perkusją zasiadł Wolfgang Hieronymi. Pojawił się też nowy, amerykański(!) wokalista, Ken Traylor (ex Joy Unlimited) wspomagany dwuosobowym chórkiem żeńskim, zaś płytę wydała stawiająca pierwsze kroki w branży wytwórnia Nova specjalizująca się w wydawaniu na płytach winylowych i kasetach składanek typu „The Best Of…” znanych wykonawców (Rolling Stones, 10cc, Camel, UFO, Cat Stevens, Ten Years After…). Płytę nagrano w styczniu 1975 roku w hamburskich Windrose Studios.

Potężny, nokautujący debiut w swoich długich jazz rockowych kompozycjach miał mocne, ciężkie bluesowe brzmienie gitary. Natomiast „Lost Mankind” w większości brzmi jak zupełnie inny zespół. Inny nie znaczy gorszy. Płyta zaczyna się od energicznego i porywającego „Six O’Clock” gdzie zmiana dźwięku z debiutu jest natychmiast zauważalna. Pompujący saksofon i kaskada organów Hammonda, które krążyły na „Desert Places” wciąż tu są, ale utwór ma bardziej zwartą strukturę. Jest bardziej melodyjny, z mocno wyeksponowanym saksofonem, zaś wokal Kena Taylora wspiera żeński duet nadając mu nieco funkowego brzmienia. Tytułowy, „Lost Mankind” to utwór spod znaku symfonicznego rocka z pogodnym melotronem, kapryśnym fletem, fajną gitarą i żeńskim chórkiem jak u Pink Floyd, choć bardziej kojarzy mi się on z „In the Mountains” z drugiego albumu Earth and Fire „Song of the Marching Children” (1971)… Króciutkie „Reverie” (1:35) z ładnym fortepianem i melotronem w tle to przystawka przed gorącym daniem. „Go Ahead” to 11-minutowy monster, w którym wszystkie działa zespołu zostały wystawione do boju (włącznie z czołgiem z okładki). Zaraźliwe dźwięki saksofonu mieszają się z wystrzałowo jazzującym fletem. Płonący i rozpalonym do czerwoności gitarowy lament współgra z ognistymi podmuchami organów Hammonda. To także wizytówka nowego, świetnego perkusisty Wolfganga Hieronymi. Jest moc – taka jak na debiucie! Będący w amoku muzycy nie odpuszczają idąc dalej w bojowym szyku. „Trace Of Sadness” to nieustępliwy, pełen atomowej energii hard rock z ciężkim jak skała Hammondem i kapitalną, rozbuchaną gitarą tnącą soczystymi solówkami. O rany, jak tu nie kochać Błękitnego Wieloryba…?! W „Midnight Stone” wokal Kena prawie przypomina Johna Wettona z King Crimson, choć ta dwu i półminutowa ballada kojarzy mi się z triem ELP. W „Song For 'Thesy’ ” zdominowanym przez ulotny flet z jazzowymi nutami i królewskimi organami podobają mi się ładnie wykorzystane instrumenty perkusyjne, zwłaszcza dźwięki marimby słyszalne między zwrotkami. Prosty zabieg, a nadaje nagraniu magii. Zacieram ręce, bowiem zamykający płytę, „Beyond The Horizon” ma siłę i moc debiutanckiego albumu. Pełen rozmachu siedmiominutowy, wręcz wzorcowy progresywny rock z rozszerzonym instrumentarium, kąsającą perkusją, falą oszalałych dźwięków Hammonda, radosnym fletem i gitarą przesiąkniętą bluesem powala na kolana! Zagrany mocno, z pasją, ale i subtelnie. Inteligentne zmiany tempa powodują, że całości słucha się z ogromnym zainteresowaniem do ostatniej sekundy, do ostatniego dźwięku. To jeszcze bardziej utwierdza mnie w przekonaniu, że mamy tu do czynienia z wielce utalentowanymi muzykami.

Po wydaniu płyty grupa ruszyła w trasę z Barclay James Harvest. Miało to bezpośredni wpływ na ich późniejszą muzykę. Trzecia płyta „As A Keepsake” (1977) zainspirowana Brytyjczykami była już zdecydowanie bardziej symfonicznym popem niż rockiem. Jeśli ktoś lubi takie granie, to kolejne płyty: „A Whale Of Time” i koncertowa „Whalecome” (obie z 1978) nie powinny rozczarować. Jednak moim skromnym zdaniem ich poziom artystyczny daleko odbiega od dwóch pierwszych i absolutnie genialnych albumów.

It's hard to tell exactly what happened between this album from German proggers Satin Whale and their knockout first LP `Desert Places' only a year before in 1974. Their powerful Brain label debut was always very accessible but had a tough and constantly heavy bluesy guitar sound to its lengthy jazz-rock compositions, but here, whilst still delivering a very strong album (one that is often considered their best, in fact), `Lost Mankind' mostly sounds like a completely different band altogether. Satin Whale perform in a prouder symphonic style on this one with a streamlined melodic approach and polished production to its more varied, sophisticated and ambitious material, as well as offering much tidier vocals from an American singer no doubt brought in at the time to make the group more appealing to international audiences.
Right from the energetic and groovy opener `Six O'Clock', the change in sound from the debut is instantly noticeable. The pumping sax and trickles of Hammond organ that darted around `Desert Places' are still there, but the piece is far more compact and instantly tuneful backed up by a chorus of female chorus singers, and the lead vocals of Ken Traylor offer crisp English in stark contrast to guitarist/saxophonist/flautist Dieter Roesberg's heavily accented rasp on the debut. The title track `Lost Mankind' is a lightly playful symphonic piece with serene Mellotron, whimsical flute and humming organ that reminds a little in moments of a track like `In the Mountains' from Earth and Fire's second album `Song of the Marching Children', and `Reverie' is a pretty piano and organ interlude. Then it's all guns blazing for the eleven minute tour-de-force `Go Ahead', jammed with honking infectious sax blasts, jazzy darting flute, red-hot blazing guitar wailing and the Hammond organ out in full-blast, all woven to clever reprising themes. There's so much variety delivered with exemplary skill throughout this one, and it also serves as a fine showcase for new drummer Wolfgang Hieronymi.

The flip side's `Trace Of Sadness' is a relentless and boisterous Hammond-drenched rocker, `Midnight Stone' perhaps resembles a swooning E.L.P-like ballad where Ken's vocals almost remind of John Wetton of King Crimson, and breezy flute flits in and out of soft rocker `Song For 'Thesy' with jazz overtones and organ-driven regal bombast that echoes Focus, M. Efekt and Jethro Tull. Closer `Beyond The Horizon' again comes close to the first album with its extended instrumental stretches of snappy drumming, waves of break-neck frantic Hammond organ runs, joyous flute and bluesy swagger-drenched electric guitar wrangling, and the subtle and skilfully executed tempo-change sprints reveal again what a talented bunch of musicians these guys were.

`Lost Mankind would prove to be a real one-off from the group, with both the heavy Hammond-dominated rocking of the debut and grander symphonic fancy of this one largely removed by their more straight-forward and frequently AOR next album `As a Keepsake' in 1976, and so too singer Traylor as the proper band themselves resumed the vocals from then on (it would actually be very interesting to learn the circumstances as to how he came to be involved with the band in the first place!). The punchy debut might be their real special one, but `Lost Mankind' has stronger playing, ardent ambition and energy to spare, and if you're new to this superb German band, this would be a fine place to start.

Trzecia płyta „As A Keepsake” (1977) zainspirowana Brytyjczykami była już zdecydowanie bardziej symfonicznym popem niż rockiem. Jeśli ktoś lubi takie granie, to kolejne płyty: „A Whale Of Time” i koncertowa „Whalecome” (obie z 1978) nie powinny rozczarować. Jednak moim skromnym zdaniem ich poziom artystyczny daleko odbiega od dwóch pierwszych i absolutnie genialnych albumów.

It's hard to tell exactly what happened between this album from German proggers Satin Whale and their knockout first LP `Desert Places' only a year before in 1974. Their powerful Brain label debut was always very accessible but had a tough and constantly heavy bluesy guitar sound to its lengthy jazz-rock compositions, but here, whilst still delivering a very strong album (one that is often considered their best, in fact), `Lost Mankind' mostly sounds like a completely different band altogether. Satin Whale perform in a prouder symphonic style on this one with a streamlined melodic approach and polished production to its more varied, sophisticated and ambitious material, as well as offering much tidier vocals from an American singer no doubt brought in at the time to make the group more appealing to international audiences.
Right from the energetic and groovy opener `Six O'Clock', the change in sound from the debut is instantly noticeable. The pumping sax and trickles of Hammond organ that darted around `Desert Places' are still there, but the piece is far more compact and instantly tuneful backed up by a chorus of female chorus singers, and the lead vocals of Ken Traylor offer crisp English in stark contrast to guitarist/saxophonist/flautist Dieter Roesberg's heavily accented rasp on the debut. The title track `Lost Mankind' is a lightly playful symphonic piece with serene Mellotron, whimsical flute and humming organ that reminds a little in moments of a track like `In the Mountains' from Earth and Fire's second album `Song of the Marching Children', and `Reverie' is a pretty piano and organ interlude. Then it's all guns blazing for the eleven minute tour-de-force `Go Ahead', jammed with honking infectious sax blasts, jazzy darting flute, red-hot blazing guitar wailing and the Hammond organ out in full-blast, all woven to clever reprising themes. There's so much variety delivered with exemplary skill throughout this one, and it also serves as a fine showcase for new drummer Wolfgang Hieronymi.

The flip side's `Trace Of Sadness' is a relentless and boisterous Hammond-drenched rocker, `Midnight Stone' perhaps resembles a swooning E.L.P-like ballad where Ken's vocals almost remind of John Wetton of King Crimson, and breezy flute flits in and out of soft rocker `Song For 'Thesy' with jazz overtones and organ-driven regal bombast that echoes Focus, M. Efekt and Jethro Tull. Closer `Beyond The Horizon' again comes close to the first album with its extended instrumental stretches of snappy drumming, waves of break-neck frantic Hammond organ runs, joyous flute and bluesy swagger-drenched electric guitar wrangling, and the subtle and skilfully executed tempo-change sprints reveal again what a talented bunch of musicians these guys were.

`Lost Mankind would prove to be a real one-off from the group, with both the heavy Hammond-dominated rocking of the debut and grander symphonic fancy of this one largely removed by their more straight-forward and frequently AOR next album `As a Keepsake' in 1976, and so too singer Traylor as the proper band themselves resumed the vocals from then on (it would actually be very interesting to learn the circumstances as to how he came to be involved with the band in the first place!). The punchy debut might be their real special one, but `Lost Mankind' has stronger playing, ardent ambition and energy to spare, and if you're new to this superb German band, this would be a fine place to start.

Breakout to najsłynniejszy polski zespół rockowy, który oprócz bluesa wykonuje również rock progresywny.

Zespół beatowy BLACKOUT został założony przez Tadeusza Nalepę w 1967 roku, a Mirą Kubasińską pełniła funkcję wokalistki.
Blackout istniał do końca 1967 roku. W lutym następnego roku zmienił nazwę na Breakout.
Szczyt popularności zespołu przypadł na 1969 rok, kiedy to, poszukując własnego stylu (który później okazał się blues-rockiem), grupa zwróciła się w stronę rocka progresywnego, prezentując publiczności najwybitniejsze przykłady polskiego art rocka, takie jak „Na Drugim Brzegu Tęczy” i „70a”.

Pierwszy z nich łączy w sobie beat music i rock, z żywymi jazzowymi i bluesowymi akcentami. Potężny ładunek emocjonalny albumu jest doskonale oddany przez oszałamiająco elastyczny i rozległy głos Miry. Do zespołu dołączył Włodzimierz Nahorny grający na flecie i saksofonie.

Bardziej bluesowe i znacznie dojrzalsze brzmienie 70a wyróżnia się połączeniem męskiego i żeńskiego wokalu, z wyraźną wrażliwością LED ZEPPELIN, widoczną w kilku utworach. Szczególnie godne uwagi są „Zapraszamy na Korride” i „Piekno”. Oprócz Nahorny, w nagraniu wziął udział również przyszły basista SBB, Josef Skrzek.

Trzeci album okazał się punktem zwrotnym dla zespołu. BREAKOUT w końcu zwrócił się w stronę blues-rocka. Nalepa objął rolę głównego wokalisty, a Dariusz Kozakiewicz, jeden z najlepszych polskich muzyków i znakomity instrumentalista o subtelnym wyczuciu stylu, później grający w zespole TEST, został gitarzystą.

Oprócz bluesa i rocka progresywnego zespół w swojej karierze wykonywał także rock i soul (a raczej pop-soul), czego przykładem są albumy Mira i Ogien.

Wydany przez Polydor Records w grudniu 1971 roku, klasyczny i w mojej opinii doskonały album duńskiej progresywnej formacji o pełnym brzmieniu opartym na organach Hammonda i soczystych dźwiękach gitar, uzupełnionych partiami fletu oraz mocną sekcją rytmiczną. Zespół z reguły stawiał na zwarte formy i chwytliwe melodie, przy czym częstokroć zaskakująco gwałtownie przechodził (zmieniając przy okazji tempo) między akustycznymi fragmentami a cięższymi, organowo-gitarowymi improwizacjami. Przykładem choćby świetne solo przesterowanej gitary wchodzące z nagła w pierwszym utworze... Wyjątkiem od reguły były 2 krótkie fragmenty oparte na usypiającym podkładzie pianina i smętnej partii wokalu. Choć inspiracje brytyjskimi zespołami, takimi jak Jethro Tull (proszę posłuchać kapitalnego, drugiego utworu), Atomic Rooster, Traffic czy Caravan były wyraźnie słyszalne, jednak muzyka Blast Furnace zachowała własny charakter.
Niestety, album nie odniósł sukcesu komercyjnego (oryginalny winyl w idealnym stanie sprzedaje się po 1000 euro), ale z czasem zyskał status jednego z najciekawszych i najbardziej poszukiwanych, duńskich, progresywnych albumów początku lat siedemdziesiątych. Po rozpadzie grupy, dwóch jej muzyków zasiliło formację Culpeper's Orchard. Dodatkowo jako bonus dołączono A-stronę rzadkiego singla z 1971 roku. To jest najlepiej brzmiąca wersja CD tego tytułu!

Denmark has never been a notable prog country. In the late 60's and early 70's there were several bands oriented to jazz-rock or folk-rock, but much of anything to be labelled as (symphonic) prog precisely. Danish bands with longer careers include the Fusion oriented Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, and Savage Rose whose roots were in the early r&b and jazz but tried many different styles along the way (I would support their inclusion in PA).

During the early years of progressive rock as a genre, there were four short-lived Danish bands who released a sole, eponymous album: Old Man & The Sea, Hurdy Gurdy, Pan -- and Blast Furnace. The drummer-vocalist of this Copenhagen-based group was an English immigrant Tom McEwan. Bassist Arne Wurgler had played in the mentioned Pan. Organist-pianist Thor Backhausen plays some flute too on this album. Guitarist Niels Vangklige does some tight electric guitar solos here and there.

Placed here under Psychedelic/Space Rock, Blast Furnace must have been a problematic case for PA's subgenre teams. There is a hint of psychedelia in the music which in the end is pretty many-sided, as the band bio points out. My main associations or references come from the late 60's proto-prog era (if there was one, in hindsight), TRAFFIC and PROCOL HARUM, who likewise mixed various musical elements from blues to folk, not necessarily in a way to make the compositions either eclectic prog or symphonic prog, at least not in the case of Blast Furnace.

The only slightly longer piece is 'Toytown' (7:17) in which the organ indeed reminds me of Procol Harum. The instrumental faster section is energetic jazz-rock. McEwan as a vocalist is a bit rough around the edges, not much of depth or colour in his voice, and yet his singing is often the essence of the songs. Is there an English-language equivalence for the word chanson? I'd compare him, well, if not quite to the likes of Jacques Brel, at least to the story-telling Harry Chapin, for his voice also.

The songs are mostly quite moody in atmosphere. My favourite is the emotionally moving, piano backed 'Goodbye Mr. Bobo' -- and its brief reprise -- about the sad and lonely clown. The cd contains a Danish- language intended-to-be-a-single bonus track sung by Arne Wurgler. It is less rocking and more chanson-like.

This album/band is a sympathetic curiosity and not a bad listen at all, if you generally like the eclectic late 60's vintage rock which is not very clearly progressive (symphonic) rock. In England this would have sounded already somewhat outdated in 1971. So, don't expect too much from it. 3,5 stars.

Ekseption to holenderski zespół grający progresywnego rocka. Został założony w 1967 przez kompozytora, aranżera i pianistę Ricka van der Lindena. Wcześniej działał pod nazwami Incrowd, oraz The Jokers. Zespół zasłynął przede wszystkim oryginalnymi transkrypcjami muzyki poważnej różnych epok. Byli to między innymi: Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Piotr Czajkowski. Po rozpadzie zespołu Rick Van Linden założył zespół Trace, który wydał trzy płyty i później znów przekształcił się w Ekseption. Wstawka zawiera ósmą płytę zespołu.

I have always had a soft spot for MMEBs early 70s albums, the later period (from 'Watch' an later) being to "easy-listening" for my taste. However, as a LIVE band, now that's a different story. The role of Mann & co as composers of prog music may undoubtedly be argued, the best tracks on their albums have (almost) without exceptions been cover tunes. Very good covers, though. MMEBs interpretation and arrangement of Dylan and Springsteen classics are nothing but superb music to my ears, and on this album we are served with the best MMEB can offer: many of their best cover tunes in LIVE recordings. Much of the material is from their 1976+ period, but that's OK with me in this context because the versions are good, the live atmosphere is there, the live 'glitches' and improvisations are all there. All in all, a highly recommended album for both newcomers to MMEB as well as the rest of us who love to hear them live.

This third live album of the Mann is not significantly different from the other ones but slightly better overall.
OK, it is a double one which could mean that the fan would get the chance to get a full concert available. But there is nothing as such.

The second CD is called "Encore & More". Not the best way to describe a live set...Half a concert and about half of repeated tracks BUT in a shorter format for most of the song.

Some exception like the great "Shelter From The Storm" from their latest studio album (Vengeance) which is by far my fave track from this second CD. And to have two versions of the very average Marley "Redemption Song" is not a great experience.

I have never liked "Demolition Man": nor "The Police" original, nor the Mann studio version, nor any live versions. On the contrary of course of a jewel like "Blinded By The Light". A great pop song, with feeling like I enjoy a lot. And the shorter version works very well since it avoids some useless repetitions.

But there are other enjoyable songs on this live album like "Davy's On The Road Again" with its heavy & pumping organ play, the hard and soul-ish "The Mighty Quinn" and a good (but not exceptional) rendition of "Father Of Day, Father Of Night" (even if the great guitar of the studio version is not really on par). The fully expanded version of "Blinded" on the first CD is also well achieved. As the spacey instrumental She Was (one of my fave, but too short).

There are also some down points, unfortunately (Nothing Ever Happens, Sikelele).

All in all, this is probably the best Mann live album available. Three stars.

The Mann and his Earth Band were not very active any longer. Almost ten years between their latest studio release ("Masque") and this one. What else can seriously bring the Mann?
One is impressed with the opening number: "Pleasure And Pain": the melody is beautiful, vocals very performing and there is a superb guitar work, like during their hey days. It took a while to the Mann to release a song from this caliber. I'm glad that it finally came out.

The second good piece is the poignant instrumental "Adults Only". Fine keys work, aerial mood and pleasant melody. There won't be many tracks like this one unfortunately. The energetic "Miss You" can be integrated into the few good songs from "Soft Vengeance"as well as the pop "Nature Of The Beast" and its Springsteen-oriented vocals. This closes the package of decent songs available.

I am not at all as laudatory with their cover of the Stones number "Play With Fire". The original rock feeling has smelt into a messy pop/reggae-ish oriented tune. Press nextT. As the album flows from one song to another, one has to recognize that the fire of the opening track has been extinguished quite abruptly.

It is a long and poor procession of cheesy tracks ("Nothing Ever Happens", "The Price I Pay"), mellowish ones ("Shelter From The Storm", "Tumbling Ball") and the funky/disco "The Complete History Of Sexual Jealousy" and "99 Lbs" are not my cup of tea to say the least.

I am also quite perplex when I listen to "Wherever Love Drops" (part 1 which lasts for less than a minute and part 2 which is double this length.). As you can see, this album has not very much to offer (except the brilliant opener and a couple of good songs).

If I do the math, it makes four good songs out of fourteen (23 points out of seventy on my scale). I'll upgrade it to two stars but be warned, we are not facing a good album.

A gap of almost 10 years betwen this one Soft vengeance released in summer of 1996 and Masque from 1987, diffrent decades, diffrent aproach , musicaly. This album sounds mature, mid tempo almost all the time, fine arrangements, very skilfull musicians, but not in the way of show of all the time how strong and good I am, subltle arrangements define this album. I realy like this album, ok is quite diffrent then the predecesor Masque, this is more on rockier side, the progressive elements are all over the place but melted in other way then before, almost a calm album , toying in places with AOR sound, but not very proeminent like other bands. After so many years some of the fans and not only could not expect very much from the master MM, but here it is a solid album, ok far from being a masterpiece, but very enjoyble for sure from capo al fine.Some intristing keybords here, that from the first note anyone will recognize the master. Again cover versions, A Rolling Sones one , Playing with fire here sounds quite ok to me, The Complete History Of Sexual Jealousy is very refreshing to my ears, I don't understand why is so bad view this piece, Tumbling Ball. Noel McCalla voice fits ok in this kind of sound, he appear few years earlier on Plain music from 1991 also a Manfred Mann album but not under Earh Band this time. The rest of the musicians are in ok form, Roger , Thompson the veteran on drums from Jethro Tull early years Clive Bunker did a good job. So , a pleasent album all the way, not so well trieted here, the ratings and overall note is quite low, but the album sounds ok, even great in places, so why complaining from my side, I like it , I'm a big fan of the band and have almost all they released, minus a copule of live albums, so this one stands ok in my collection, is not a completionists item for sure. 3 stars easy, good album but not realy something of an intrest if you don't know MMEB before works.
