Dla mnie rewelacja! Całkiem zapomniany brytyjski zespół na swoim jedynym albumie, z 1969 roku, dość osobliwie połączył elementy hard-rocka, muzyki klasycznej, popu i psychodelii z klimatami... diabelskimi. Taka wówczas była (krótkotrwała) moda! Chóry, krótkie sentencje po łacinie, kościelne organy, ciężkie gitarowe riffy, chwytliwa melodyka - momentami zespół brzmiał prawie jak Black Sabbath (bez dużej mocy), The Beatles czy zapomniany Arzachel! Nieco podobnie (choć bez tych pseudo-diabolicznych spraw) brzmiała grupa Methuselah. Całość wyprodukował Simon Napier-Bell znany m.in. ze współpracy z The Yardbirds (1966).
To jest jeden z moich ulubionych zapomnianych albumów!

Uwaga!
W przeciwieństwie np. do płyt grupy Coven nie jest to album satanistyczny!

Czy zespół PLUS może być zapomnianą perełką, skoro nawet w epoce nikt nie wiedział o jego istnieniu..? Plus był i jest zagadką. Wydali jeden, jedyny album. Nigdy nie zagrał koncertu. Nie zaistniał w żadnych stacjach radiowych. Nie miał reklam, prasy, promocji. Niczego. Można więc powiedzieć, że jego kariera od startu skazana była na niepowodzenie. Mimo to „The Seven Deadly Sins” powinien był dotrzeć do jak najszerszego grona odbiorców i mieć swoje miejsce w panteonie koncepcyjnych albumów rockowych tamtych lat.

Na pierwszy rzut oka Plus to bracia: Tony (g) i Mike (dr) Newman, oraz Max Sims (bg) tyle, że osobami pociągającymi za sznurki byli Simon Napier-Bell i Ray Singer. Wcześniej Tony Newman był członkiem The Jeff Beck Group, na którego zwrócił uwagę były basista i producent The Yardbirds, mentor wielu późniejszych sławnych zespołów (T. Rex, Ultravox, Wham!, Asia), Napier-Bell. Odegrał on kluczową rolę doprowadzając do podpisania przez trio kontraktu nagraniowego z krótkotrwałą filią wytwórni ABC, Probe, debiutując z nimi w 1968 roku singlem „Twenty Thousand People”/ „I’m Talking As A Friend” – dziś rzadkim i bardzo poszukiwanym.

Mniej znany Ray Singer na początku lat sześćdziesiątych był (delikatnie mówiąc) drugoligowym wokalistą, ale później to on pomógł rozwinąć karierę Davidowi Sylvianowi, Joan Armatrading, grupie Japan… To właśnie ten producencki duet wpadł na pomysł nagrania płyty koncepcyjnej, a w zasadzie quasi-mrocznej sztuki skupiającej się na tradycyjnej chrześcijańskiej klasyfikacji grzechów. Na siedmiu grzechach głównych. Oni też dostarczyli zespołowi ponad połowę materiału na płytę, która ukazała się w 1969 roku, mniej więcej w tym samym czasie co „Tommy” The Who, ale przed rock operą „Jesus Christ Superstar” i płytowym debiutem Black Sabbath.

Jedno spojrzenie na okładkę, jej opis i wszystko powinno być jasne. Ten album łączący elementy hard rocka, muzyki klasycznej i psychodelicznych klimatów ułożony jest jak katolicka msza. W utworach trójce muzyków towarzyszą wokaliści (w zasadzie cały chór), plus fortepian, organy, skrzypce i wiolonczela, tworząc tym samym niesamowicie eklektyczną mieszankę rockowych i popowych piosenek z lat sześćdziesiątych. To właśnie owe piosenki, może i brzmiące nieco przestarzale nawet jak na standardy roku 1969, ale wciąż całkiem dobre, utrzymane w stylu wczesnych The Who, lub w duchu pre-psychodelicznych Beatlesów, są „mięsem” tego albumu. Trzeba przyznać, że aranżacje i wykonania są na bardzo wysokim poziomie. Tematyczne utwory powiązano krótkimi tekstami po łacinie i wstawkami kwartetu smyczkowego. No i mamy tu do czynienia z całym muzycznym spektrum. Gloria In Excelsis: „Toccata” i The Secrets: „Devil’s Hymn” mieszało wpływy klasyczne z chórami kościelnymi i progresywnymi wstawkami. W innym miejscu, Pride: „Pride” i Envy: „I’m Talking As A Friend” oferowały zaskakującą parę popowych klejnotów; Avarice: „Daddy’s Thing” był zaskakująco funkowy, podczas gdy Wrath: „Gemegemera” to standardowy hard rock. Ich muzykalność była naprawdę imponująca, a sekcja rytmiczna Newman/Simms w takim The Dismissal: „Twenty Thousand People” generowała sporo energii. Opis płyty nie zawierał informacji kto był głównym wokalistą, ale kimkolwiek on był miał całkiem interesujący głos radzący sobie doskonale ze wszystkim, od quasi-punkowej agresji we Wrath: „Gemegemera” po pop w stylu Badfinger. Teksty są nieco zagmatwane i w różnych stylach: od elżbietańskich, przez łacinę, po współczesne. Taki poetycki misz-masz, ale świetnie wpisujące się w tematykę płyty.

Początek Introit: „Twenty Thousand People” brzmi jak zaklęcie intonowane przez kapłana wykrzykującego coś, co brzmi jak „Wewnętrzny krąg!”… bardzo dziwnie. Mimo mrocznego i przygnębiającego tekstu, muzycznie jest to dość komercyjny numer z melodyjnym refrenem, zgrabną wstawką fortepianu i niezłym solem gitarowym. Łatwo teraz zrozumieć, dlaczego Probe wybrał go na singiel. Swoją drogą melodia (cholera, wciąż ją sobie nucę!) trochę przypomina mi jedną z reklam napoju gazowanego sprzed dobrych kilkunastu lat. Dziś, w dobie współczesnego marketingu pewnie reklamowałaby arszenik, ewentualnie trutkę na szczury…. Gloria In Excelsis: „Toccata” rozpoczyna się bachowską „Toccatą i fugą d-mol”, która po chwili płynnie przechodzi w prostą melodię napisaną przez Napier-Bella i Singera, jaką można usłyszeć w lokalnym kościele. Tekst został nieco zaktualizowany, aby pasowały do ​​nadrzędnego tematu. Co by nie mówić, to jeden z najlepszych momentów na albumie. Zresztą jak się nim nie zachwycać skoro wpleciono tu jedną z najwspanialszych klasycznych melodii ludzkości..? Napisany przez braci Newman, Avarice: „Daddy’s Thing” otwiera się interesującymi klasycznymi dźwiękami altówki, ale kiedy do gry wchodzą rozpędzone klawisze i rozkołysana gitara utwór przekształca się w soczysty rocker. Mocna rzecz! Nieco inaczej brzmi Pride: „Pride”.
Pamiętam jak pierwszy raz go usłyszałem byłem pewien, że to utwór Badfinger. Wciąż nie jestem pewien kto zajmował się wokalem, ale ten jak nic przypomina Pete’a Hama. W każdym bądź razie to jedna z tych uroczych melodii w stylu Beatlesów idealna na przebojowe play listy… Sloth: „Open Up Your Eyes” to kolejny rockowy kawałek z mocnym basem Simmsa i jedną z najlepszych gitarowych solówek Tony’ego Newmana… Krótka, melodyjna wstawka zaczyna Wrath: „Gemegemera”. Utwór ten, zamykający pierwszą stronę płyty, ostatecznie podąża w kierunku gdzie Black Sabbath spotyka Motorhead. Miażdżący bas, płacz dziecka i okrzyki piłkarskich kiboli są tu jedynie wisienką na torcie.

Maniakalny głos wykrzykujący do „Turn your eyes..!” („Odwróć oczy”) poprzedza krótki chorał gregoriański, a potem The Secrets: „Devil’s Hymn” zmienia się w niezapomniany, klimatyczny kawałek z jazzowym interludium wrzuconym w środku utworu. Jest w tym nagraniu coś wzniosłego i zarazem diabolicznego. Podczas jego słuchania mam gęsią skórę i czuję się jakbym był w środku obrazu Hieronima Boscha „The Seven Deadly Sins And The Four Last Things„.

Następujący po nim Lust: „Maybe You’re The Same” brzmi trochę jak zagubiony kawałek The Who, ale z całą pewnością jest jednym z ciekawszych utworów na płycie, a skąpany w lśniącej popowej melodii i wspaniałych harmoniach wokalnych Envy: „I’m Talking As A Friend” jest jej kolejną perełką. Tekst jest właściwie histeryczny, ale trudno sobie wyobrazić, żeby ktoś lepiej zinterpretował grzech zazdrości… Gluttony: „Something To Threaten Your Family” otrzymał odpowiednią oprawę w klimacie rockowej ballady. Co prawda pojawiające się dysonansowe dźwięki skrzypiec wprowadzają ponury nastrój grozy i przerażenia, ale ładnie brzmiąca, pół akustyczna gitara, harmonie wokalne i pojawiające się od czasu do czasu organy równoważą apokaliptyczne w swej wymowie dźwięki. No i na koniec z powrotem wracamy do momentu piekła i siarki. Zanim całość zakończy się zupełnie dziwną mieszanką popu i dźwiękowego kolażu jeszcze raz słyszymy utwór, który otwierał płytę. Tyle, że The Dismissal: „Twenty Thousand People” po przesłuchaniu wszystkich wcześniejszych utworów, nabiera jakby innego znaczenia.

PLUS okazał się jednorazowym projektem. Może tak miało być od początku? Po nagraniu pyty muzycy zniknęli ze sceny, podczas gdy dwaj mistrzowie marionetek zajęli się większymi, bardziej zyskownymi zajęciami.

„Siedem grzechów głównych” jest dziełem epoki powstałym w swoim czasie i miejscu, gdzie religia spotyka się (nie po raz pierwszy zresztą) z rock and rollem. Jestem w stanie zrozumieć, że nie wszystkim się to spodoba. Ale ci, którzy lubią muzyczny eklektyzm lat 60-tych będą (podobnie jak ja) zachwyceni. Jako jedni z prekursorów nowoczesnego, koncepcyjnego albumu prog rocka byli (są!) czymś niezwykłym i interesującym. Czymś, co historię gatunku postawiło w nowym świetle. Wysiłek jaki PLUS wraz z producentami włożyli w nagranie albumu ostatecznie wyszedł nie tylko im, ale i ówczesnej muzyce rozrywkowej na plus.

A true lost gem of the '60s, The Seven Deadly Sins could be viewed as a simple cash-in on the success of Jesus Christ Superstar if it weren't for the fact that this LP is deeper and rocks harder. With wild fuzz guitar, string interludes, an entire choir, piano, organ, and a song cycle structured like a Catholic mass, the group Plus made this one overlooked classic (with the assistance of ex-Yardbirds bassist/producer, Simon Napier-Bell) and then disappeared into the night. Essential for any fan of 60s psych/prog and concept albums in general.

Nieco podobnie (choć bez tych pseudo-diabolicznych spraw) brzmiała grupa Methuselah. Całość wyprodukował Simon Napier-Bell znany m.in. ze współpracy z The Yardbirds (1966).
To jest jeden z moich ulubionych zapomnianych albumów!

Czy zespół PLUS może być zapomnianą perełką, skoro nawet w epoce nikt nie wiedział o jego istnieniu..? Plus był i jest zagadką. Wydali jeden, jedyny album. Nigdy nie zagrał koncertu. Nie zaistniał w żadnych stacjach radiowych. Nie miał reklam, prasy, promocji. Niczego. Można więc powiedzieć, że jego kariera od startu skazana była na niepowodzenie. Mimo to „The Seven Deadly Sins” powinien był dotrzeć do jak najszerszego grona odbiorców i mieć swoje miejsce w panteonie koncepcyjnych albumów rockowych tamtych lat.

Na pierwszy rzut oka Plus to bracia: Tony (g) i Mike (dr) Newman, oraz Max Sims (bg) tyle, że osobami pociągającymi za sznurki byli Simon Napier-Bell i Ray Singer. Wcześniej Tony Newman był członkiem The Jeff Beck Group, na którego zwrócił uwagę były basista i producent The Yardbirds, mentor wielu późniejszych sławnych zespołów (T. Rex, Ultravox, Wham!, Asia), Napier-Bell. Odegrał on kluczową rolę doprowadzając do podpisania przez trio kontraktu nagraniowego z krótkotrwałą filią wytwórni ABC, Probe, debiutując z nimi w 1968 roku singlem „Twenty Thousand People”/ „I’m Talking As A Friend” – dziś rzadkim i bardzo poszukiwanym.

Mniej znany Ray Singer na początku lat sześćdziesiątych był (delikatnie mówiąc) drugoligowym wokalistą, ale później to on pomógł rozwinąć karierę Davidowi Sylvianowi, Joan Armatrading, grupie Japan… To właśnie ten producencki duet wpadł na pomysł nagrania płyty koncepcyjnej, a w zasadzie quasi-mrocznej sztuki skupiającej się na tradycyjnej chrześcijańskiej klasyfikacji grzechów. Na siedmiu grzechach głównych. Oni też dostarczyli zespołowi ponad połowę materiału na płytę, która ukazała się w 1969 roku, mniej więcej w tym samym czasie co „Tommy” The Who, ale przed rock operą „Jesus Christ Superstar” i płytowym debiutem Black Sabbath.

Jedno spojrzenie na okładkę, jej opis i wszystko powinno być jasne. Ten album łączący elementy hard rocka, muzyki klasycznej i psychodelicznych klimatów ułożony jest jak katolicka msza. W utworach trójce muzyków towarzyszą wokaliści (w zasadzie cały chór), plus fortepian, organy, skrzypce i wiolonczela, tworząc tym samym niesamowicie eklektyczną mieszankę rockowych i popowych piosenek z lat sześćdziesiątych. To właśnie owe piosenki, może i brzmiące nieco przestarzale nawet jak na standardy roku 1969, ale wciąż całkiem dobre, utrzymane w stylu wczesnych The Who, lub w duchu pre-psychodelicznych Beatlesów, są „mięsem” tego albumu. Trzeba przyznać, że aranżacje i wykonania są na bardzo wysokim poziomie. Tematyczne utwory powiązano krótkimi tekstami po łacinie i wstawkami kwartetu smyczkowego. No i mamy tu do czynienia z całym muzycznym spektrum. Gloria In Excelsis: „Toccata” i The Secrets: „Devil’s Hymn” mieszało wpływy klasyczne z chórami kościelnymi i progresywnymi wstawkami. W innym miejscu, Pride: „Pride” i Envy: „I’m Talking As A Friend” oferowały zaskakującą parę popowych klejnotów; Avarice: „Daddy’s Thing” był zaskakująco funkowy, podczas gdy Wrath: „Gemegemera” to standardowy hard rock. Ich muzykalność była naprawdę imponująca, a sekcja rytmiczna Newman/Simms w takim The Dismissal: „Twenty Thousand People” generowała sporo energii. Opis płyty nie zawierał informacji kto był głównym wokalistą, ale kimkolwiek on był miał całkiem interesujący głos radzący sobie doskonale ze wszystkim, od quasi-punkowej agresji we Wrath: „Gemegemera” po pop w stylu Badfinger. Teksty są nieco zagmatwane i w różnych stylach: od elżbietańskich, przez łacinę, po współczesne. Taki poetycki misz-masz, ale świetnie wpisujące się w tematykę płyty.

Początek Introit: „Twenty Thousand People” brzmi jak zaklęcie intonowane przez kapłana wykrzykującego coś, co brzmi jak „Wewnętrzny krąg!”… bardzo dziwnie. Mimo mrocznego i przygnębiającego tekstu, muzycznie jest to dość komercyjny numer z melodyjnym refrenem, zgrabną wstawką fortepianu i niezłym solem gitarowym. Łatwo teraz zrozumieć, dlaczego Probe wybrał go na singiel. Swoją drogą melodia (cholera, wciąż ją sobie nucę!) trochę przypomina mi jedną z reklam napoju gazowanego sprzed dobrych kilkunastu lat. Dziś, w dobie współczesnego marketingu pewnie reklamowałaby arszenik, ewentualnie trutkę na szczury…. Gloria In Excelsis: „Toccata” rozpoczyna się bachowską „Toccatą i fugą d-mol”, która po chwili płynnie przechodzi w prostą melodię napisaną przez Napier-Bella i Singera, jaką można usłyszeć w lokalnym kościele. Tekst został nieco zaktualizowany, aby pasowały do ​​nadrzędnego tematu. Co by nie mówić, to jeden z najlepszych momentów na albumie. Zresztą jak się nim nie zachwycać skoro wpleciono tu jedną z najwspanialszych klasycznych melodii ludzkości..? Napisany przez braci Newman, Avarice: „Daddy’s Thing” otwiera się interesującymi klasycznymi dźwiękami altówki, ale kiedy do gry wchodzą rozpędzone klawisze i rozkołysana gitara utwór przekształca się w soczysty rocker. Mocna rzecz! Nieco inaczej brzmi Pride: „Pride”.
Pamiętam jak pierwszy raz go usłyszałem byłem pewien, że to utwór Badfinger. Wciąż nie jestem pewien kto zajmował się wokalem, ale ten jak nic przypomina Pete’a Hama. W każdym bądź razie to jedna z tych uroczych melodii w stylu Beatlesów idealna na przebojowe play listy… Sloth: „Open Up Your Eyes” to kolejny rockowy kawałek z mocnym basem Simmsa i jedną z najlepszych gitarowych solówek Tony’ego Newmana… Krótka, melodyjna wstawka zaczyna Wrath: „Gemegemera”. Utwór ten, zamykający pierwszą stronę płyty, ostatecznie podąża w kierunku gdzie Black Sabbath spotyka Motorhead. Miażdżący bas, płacz dziecka i okrzyki piłkarskich kiboli są tu jedynie wisienką na torcie.

Maniakalny głos wykrzykujący do „Turn your eyes..!” („Odwróć oczy”) poprzedza krótki chorał gregoriański, a potem The Secrets: „Devil’s Hymn” zmienia się w niezapomniany, klimatyczny kawałek z jazzowym interludium wrzuconym w środku utworu. Jest w tym nagraniu coś wzniosłego i zarazem diabolicznego. Podczas jego słuchania mam gęsią skórę i czuję się jakbym był w środku obrazu Hieronima Boscha „The Seven Deadly Sins And The Four Last Things„.

Następujący po nim Lust: „Maybe You’re The Same” brzmi trochę jak zagubiony kawałek The Who, ale z całą pewnością jest jednym z ciekawszych utworów na płycie, a skąpany w lśniącej popowej melodii i wspaniałych harmoniach wokalnych Envy: „I’m Talking As A Friend” jest jej kolejną perełką. Tekst jest właściwie histeryczny, ale trudno sobie wyobrazić, żeby ktoś lepiej zinterpretował grzech zazdrości… Gluttony: „Something To Threaten Your Family” otrzymał odpowiednią oprawę w klimacie rockowej ballady. Co prawda pojawiające się dysonansowe dźwięki skrzypiec wprowadzają ponury nastrój grozy i przerażenia, ale ładnie brzmiąca, pół akustyczna gitara, harmonie wokalne i pojawiające się od czasu do czasu organy równoważą apokaliptyczne w swej wymowie dźwięki. No i na koniec z powrotem wracamy do momentu piekła i siarki. Zanim całość zakończy się zupełnie dziwną mieszanką popu i dźwiękowego kolażu jeszcze raz słyszymy utwór, który otwierał płytę. Tyle, że The Dismissal: „Twenty Thousand People” po przesłuchaniu wszystkich wcześniejszych utworów, nabiera jakby innego znaczenia.

PLUS okazał się jednorazowym projektem. Może tak miało być od początku? Po nagraniu pyty muzycy zniknęli ze sceny, podczas gdy dwaj mistrzowie marionetek zajęli się większymi, bardziej zyskownymi zajęciami.

„Siedem grzechów głównych” jest dziełem epoki powstałym w swoim czasie i miejscu, gdzie religia spotyka się (nie po raz pierwszy zresztą) z rock and rollem. Jestem w stanie zrozumieć, że nie wszystkim się to spodoba. Ale ci, którzy lubią muzyczny eklektyzm lat 60-tych będą (podobnie jak ja) zachwyceni. Jako jedni z prekursorów nowoczesnego, koncepcyjnego albumu prog rocka byli (są!) czymś niezwykłym i interesującym. Czymś, co historię gatunku postawiło w nowym świetle. Wysiłek jaki PLUS wraz z producentami włożyli w nagranie albumu ostatecznie wyszedł nie tylko im, ale i ówczesnej muzyce rozrywkowej na plus.

A true lost gem of the '60s, The Seven Deadly Sins could be viewed as a simple cash-in on the success of Jesus Christ Superstar if it weren't for the fact that this LP is deeper and rocks harder. With wild fuzz guitar, string interludes, an entire choir, piano, organ, and a song cycle structured like a Catholic mass, the group Plus made this one overlooked classic (with the assistance of ex-Yardbirds bassist/producer, Simon Napier-Bell) and then disappeared into the night. Essential for any fan of 60s psych/prog and concept albums in general.

Ta wydana latem 1971 roku wspaniała i niepowtarzalna płyta nagrana została przez (znaną wcześniej z folkowych, bądź popowych piosenek) japońską wokalistkę Carmen Maki z udziałem heavy-rockowej grupy Blues Creation.
Generalnie nie przepadam za kobiecymi wokalami, ale pomimo pewnych ograniczeń, naśladująca trochę Janis Joplin i Grace Slick, urodziwa Carmen jest tutaj po prostu rewelacyjna! Cały materiał powstał dokładnie w trakcie tej samej sesji co klasyczny, sygnowany wyłącznie nazwą Blues Creation LP 'Demon And Eleven Children' (wydany miesiąc wcześniej), zaś grający tutaj autentycznie ciężkiego, bluesującego rocka (trochę w klimacie pierwszej strony 'Led Zeppelin III') zespół jak zwykle był w top-formie i z pewnością się nie oszczędzał!
Powtarzam: to jest kapitalny album bez ani jednego słabszego momentu, choć kiedy odkryłem, że twórcą otwierającego płytę 'Understand' była amerykańska formacja Fantasy (1970), byłem nieco rozczarowany...
Jakość dźwięku jest doskonała!

Słuchacze o otwartych umysłach, którzy kochają takie zespoły jak Marillion, Porcupine Tree, David Bowie czy nowa Anathema, z pewnością mogą się rozgrzać przy słuchaniu tego niemieckiego zespołu.



Niemiecki Despairation proponuje na swoim piątym albumie wędrówkę po jesiennych krainach. Ciepłe brzmienie, dużo przestrzeni i lekkości, wreszcie melancholijny przekaz oraz lekko progresywne szlify. Nie wiem, co ci panowie grali na poprzednich krążkach, ale obecna forma jest dosyć ciekawa. Elementy prawie popowe ("Kiss Of Ashes") sąsiadują tu ze smutnymi songami (przyjemnie trzeszczący "Farewell In Blue", "The Shallow Sea") oraz z progresywnymi zapędami ("Cathartic Revelation"). Są tu ślady twórczości Marillion, przebojowość znana z dwóch płyt Blackfield, gotyckie akcenty a la Dreadful Shadows, spokój ostatnich dokonań Anathemy, smutek Katatonii, struktury spotykane u The Gathering (z "Almost A Dance").
I mimo bogactwa inspiracji oraz dużej rozpiętości stylistycznej "A Requiem In Winter's Hue" prezentuje bardzo wyrównany poziom. Jednych może zrazić zbytnie epatowanie smutnymi pierwiastkami, innych zdecydowanie za lekka forma. Ale w swojej stylistyce Despairation czuje się wyjątkowo dobrze. To zdecydowanie słychać.

In 2017, as they were working on the live production of Celebrating David Bowie, Adrian Belew and the show’s producer Angelo Bundini got chatting. Wouldn’t it be great, Bundini enthused, if Belew could put together a live band performing songs from Discipline, Beat and Three Of A Perfect Pair, the celebrated King Crimson triptych of the 1980s?

Founding member Robert Fripp was consulted. He eventually declined involvement, but gave Belew his blessing to proceed. The pandemic and the conflicting tour schedules of eminent in-demand musicians further stalled proceedings, but by 2024 Belew’s dream line-up was good to go.

Tony Levin would revive his position on Chapman stick, Tool’s resident Bill Bruford aficionado Danny Carey would handle drums, and Steve Vai – a big fan of Fripp’s 1979 solo LP Exposure – would step up on second guitar alongside frontman Belew.

“Crimson’s music has a complexity that scratches an itch I have,” Vai said in 2024, chatting about the challenges of nailing Fripp’s “relentless” riffage on Discipline and other releases.

Documenting the band’s September 2024 show at The Theater On Broadway, Los Angeles, BEAT LIVE is a truly virtuosic and deeply musical homage to Crimson’s legacy. The deluxe Blu-ray version has beautifully filmed footage of the entire show – hugely entertaining from the moment a grinning Belew appears in a salmon-pink suit and pork pie hat.

Buzzing on the live resurrection of such deliciously tricksy tunes as Neal And Jack And Me – not to mention Three Of A Perfect Pair material that was never played live back in the day – BEAT also sound supremely relaxed here, as can be garnered from Belew’s banter with the crowd.

He and Vai coax alien love secrets from their guitars, while Carey pounds on Bruford’s old rototoms, given to him by Belew. There’s an audible joy in their live performance, which, together with their ability to segue from pachyderm-impersonating dissonance (Elephant Talk) to languorous ambience (Matte Kudasai), ensures they never sound remotely indulgent.

The quartet’s combined chops are next level, but it’s all done in the service of some wonderfully daring and unique music that Belew’s articulate, stream-of- consciousness lyrics pull in a more art-rock direction. And Vai, we’re reminded, is often at his very best while serving the music of others.

Asaf Awidan (hebr. ‏אסף אבידן‎; ur. 23 marca 1980 w Jerozolimie) to izraelski piosenkarz rockowy, folkowy i bluesowy, autor tekstów piosenek, wokalista i lider zespołu Asaf Avidan & the Mojos.
Jest synem dyplomatów Ministerstwa Spraw Zagranicznych Izraela. Cztery lata swojego dzieciństwa spędził na Jamajce. Po odbyciu obowiązkowej służby wojskowej w kraju podjął studia animacji w Szkole Sztuk Pięknych i Rzemiosł Artystycznych Besaleel. W ramach pracy dyplomowej zrealizował krótkometrażowy film Find Love Now, który wygrał w swojej kategorii Międzynarodowy Festiwal Filmowy w Hajfie. Po ukończeniu studiów wyjechał do Tel Awiwu, gdzie pracował jako animator aż do czasu zerwania z dziewczyną w 2005. Rozstanie sprowokowało go do powrotu do rodzinnego miasta, porzucenia pracy oraz skupienia się na muzyce. It has been quite a while that I didn't listen to Be Bop Deluxe and it waswith real pleasure that I re- discovered this debut album which can be seen as a mix between 10 CC (Axe Victim) and Bowie during Love Is Swift Arrows (and a few other songs as well). These tracks are a great mix of some decadence and glam. Two very good songs.
The album is a pleasant journey through these mid seventies sounds and it combines straight pop-rock (Jet Silver And The Dolls) and mostly glam. When you listen to Third Floor Heaven, it is undeniable that Ziggy Stardust is not far away. But it is such a pleasure to listen to this track. I wonder why.

The middle part of the album is less catchy; songs are too conventional. It picks up again thanks to a very good guitar work during Adventures In A Yorksh. This part sounds almost as a Santana one (I'm not kidding). Great job from William Nelson.

The long Jets As Dawn is a little tired until the final and great guitar part again. This time, it is really close to some of the best moments of Rock & Roll Animal (from dear old Lou), one of the best live album of all time in which guitars have a significant role.

William Nelson plays the crooner during the closing Darkness which is a fine way to end this good debut album. Nothing prog at all, but a good rock album. From the three bonus tracks available on the last CD issue, there are three live tracks featured (all recorded in 1977): while the bluesy Piece Of Mine is dispensable both Mill Street Junction and the excellent Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape are worth a listen. On the latter, the guitar play is really phenomenal.

Their leader (Nelson) will sack all the band members after this debut (sounds familar, remember what happened to The Spiders From The Mars...

"Axe victim" was the first album recorded in the name of Be Bop Deluxe, who were in reality a band in name only. The story of Be Bop Deluxe is actually the story of vocalist and guitarist Bill Nelson. This would be proved to be the case immediately after this 1974 release, the line up which made it being completely disbanded.

The first challenge here is to decipher the conflicting messages of the sleeve. On the front we have a rather gruesome skull bodied guitar image, on the back and inside we have a make up covered quartet of glam rockers. It appears Nelson and the boys wanted to make quality music while appealing to followers of the current pop trends, hence the lyric quoted above, taken from the opening title track. That song has a Mott the Hoople like feel from around the time of their interaction with David Bowie. Nelson takes little time to display his guitar prowess, but stays short of indulging in any long virtuoso solos.

"Love is swift arrows" is heavily pop based in a Talking Heads or Cockney Rebel sort of way, the slightly distorted and heavily accented vocals being backed by a predominantly acoustic arrangement. Nelson adds a fine lead guitar solo which Wishbone Ash would have been proud of though. The song segues into "Jet silver and the dolls of Venus", a Bowie-esque flight of space fantasy. There is a distinctly retro-pop feel here which is pleasant but far from demanding.

"Third floor heaven" is another Bowie like androgynous tale of perversion which moves closer to punk territories. Side one closes with "Night creatures" where Nelson's apparent fascination with glam cross dressing is now bordering on obsession. Here he tries even harder to sound like Bowie, the song sounding like an out-take from "Ziggy Stardust".

"Rocket cathedrals" is the only song on the album not written by Bill Nelson, bassist Rob Bryan stepping forward to sing lead vocal on his own song. The most upbeat song on the album, this straightforward rock number is actually the best pointer towards future BBD albums such as "Sunburst finish". Nelson slows things down for "Adventures in a Yorkshire landscape", a nicely descriptive picture of a rural setting.

At over 7 minutes, "Jets at dawn" is the longest track on the album. It is essentially a melodic pop ballad with pleasant harmonies and a fine vocal performance by Nelson. The centre point though is one of Nelson's superb guitar solos. It really is a pity that on this album his guitar talents are not exploited further as his playing is superb both technically and tonally.

Another reasonably long track, "No trains to heaven" follows. The song is somewhat less impressive than its predecessor though, being a rather disjointed Wishbone Ash like workout. The album closes with "Darkness (L'immoraliste)" an unusually dark song with angelic choir voices and an orchestral arrangement.

In all, a decent first album which features a good diversity of songs. The Bowie similarities can be distracting, but there is no doubting Bill Nelson's excellence on guitar.
