...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...

"Odmawiałem przez ostatnie 15 lat" - mówił w naszym wywiadzie Christofer Johnsson odnośnie koncertów zespołu Therion z orkiestrą symfoniczną. Problemy natury technicznej sprawiały, że artysta przyrzekł sobie nigdy więcej nie wchodzić do tej rzeki. Co się więc zmieniło, że 20 stycznia 2024 roku w Mexico City Arena muzycy stanęli obok członków Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico? Odpowiedź jest prosta: pieniądze. Grupa za tę jedną noc miała dostać taką kasę, jaką normalnie zarobiłaby przez jakieś 10 lat normalnego grania. Nie można było odmówić, co nie? Nie można było też nie wykorzystać okazji do wypuszczenia koncertówki - nawet jeśli miało to oznaczać ponowne frustracje związane z miksem.

Muszę przyznać, że poprzednią koncertówką Therion z orkiestrą byłem dość rozczarowany - w "The Miskolc Experience" brakowało mi rozmachu, jakiego oczekiwałbym po połączeniu metalu z operą. Dużo większe wrażenie zrobił na mnie standardowy pod względem składu "Celebrators of Becoming" - notabene też z Meksyku. Jak natomiast wypada "Con Orquesta"? Powiem tak: wyobraźcie sobie, że właśnie trafiliście do alternatywnej rzeczywistości, w której szwedzka formacja jest tak duża jak Metallica czy Guns N'Roses. Oto właśnie "Con Orquesta". To Therion wzniosły, epicki, grający na wielkiej hali dla 11.000 rozwrzeszczanych fanów. Z pełną, składającą się zarówno z sekcji smyczkowej, jak i dętej orkiestrą, wzbogaconą dodatkowo o chór (z męskimi i żeńskimi głosami). Z oprawą świetlną (a i nie zapominajmy o słupach ognia) godną największych. Już sam widok sceny i głodnej muzyki publiczności robi piorunujące wrażenie, nie tylko przed telewizorem. Da się zauważyć bowiem autentyczny szok na twarzach nie tylko członków Therion, ale również i muzyków orkiestry, którzy potrafią nawet ukradkiem wyciągnąć swoje smartfony, by cyknąć pamiątkowe fotki.

Christofer przestrzegał, że ciężko zmiksować prawdziwą orkiestrę tak, by oddać pełnię wrażeń na żywo. Myślę jednak, że na "Con Orquesta" udało się osiągnąć efekt, który powinien usatysfakcjonować każdego. Oczywiście pamiętać trzeba, że muzyka Therion oparta jest na symfonicznych fundamentach. To nie jest więc tak, że nagle jakiś kawałek zostanie przejęty przez smyczki, czy sekcja dęta zacznie wygrywać rzeczy, których wcześniej nie znaliśmy. Jasne, pojawią się pewne smaczki, a niektóre fragmenty zostaną pięknie przearanżowane ("Via Nocturna" czy "The Siren of the Woods" to prawdziwe perełki), no ale w gruncie rzeczy to te same kawałki, które znamy i lubimy. Gdzie na płycie były skrzypce, to teraz i na żywo są prawdziwe skrzypce, a gdzie czadu dawał potężny chór, to i teraz na scenie wgniatani jesteśmy w fotel (jak ze smakiem podbijane są partie głównych wokali!). Orkiestra i towarzyszący jej chór są integralną częścią show, a nie dodatkiem, ciekawostką. Gdzie trzeba to dodają mocy, a gdzie ma się wykazać zespół, to nie boją się milczeć i cierpliwie czekać na swoją kolej. Na innych koncertówkach Therion zawsze czegoś mi brakowało - za każdym razem gdzieś w głowie pojawiała się myśl, że "tutaj na płycie było to czy tamto". Wreszcie te wewnętrzne głosy ucichły!

O setliście tego wieczoru można powiedzieć tyle, że była... fenomenalna. Całe show zostało podzielone na dwie części, z których każda składa się z 10 numerów - co daje łączny czas trwania wideo oscylujący w granicach 140 minut. Mamy zarówno największe hity, bez których trudno wyobrazić sobie koncert Therion, z "The Birth of Venus Illegitima", "The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah" czy "To Mega Therion" na czele, jak i niejedną niespodziankę. Osobiście zaskoczony byłem przedstawicielami "Les fleurs du mal", jakże pięknie pociągniętymi przez dostojną Lori Lewis i kokieteryjną Rosalíę Sairem. Bardzo ładnie wyszło także przedstawicielstwo "Leviathanów": klimatyczny "The Ruler of Tamag", przepiękna "Tuonela" i klimatyczny "Ten Courts of Diyu" - to nie są kawałki, przy których tupiemy zniecierpliwieni nóżką, czekając na "mięsko". Tego oczywiście mamy aż nadto, gdyż co chwilę będziemy się zachwycać daną partią, czy solówką. Cudne solo Christiana w "Siren of the Woods", szalejące skrzypce w "Quetzalcoatl", instrumentalne zakończenie "Draconian Trilogy" - tu naprawdę trzeba się postarać, by się do czegoś przyczepić. Ja osobiście mogę powiedzieć tylko tyle, że w "Son of the Staves of Time" brakowało mi zadziorności Levéna. I tyle. Cała reszta to rozpływanie się nad zespołem - w tym cudowną Lori Lewis.

Miło mi też zakomunikować, że całe show zostało dynamicznie zmontowane. Nie ma tutaj zbyt dużej dozy "sterylności" - miejscami obraz potrafi być nieostry, jakby zarejestrowany z poziomu publiczności jakimś smartfonem. Bywa chaotycznie, nieco chałupniczo (jakże cudownie prześwietlone ujęcia z daleka), ale jednocześnie całość jest niesamowicie angażująca. W "Ten Courts of Diyu" co prawda mamy pewne potknięcie, w postaci przeciętego obrazu, ale to akurat może być glitch występujący w wersji przedpremierowej. Najważniejsze, że reżyserowi show udało się uchwycić atmosferę panującą tego dnia w Mexico City Arena. Czuć ze sceny ten żar; mnóstwo tutaj scen zapadających w pamięć. Od tupiących nogami muzyków orkiestry, tańczących przedstawicieli chóru, przez znakomicie bawiących się członków składu, aż do zachowania publiki. Lori szalejąca w "Ginnungagap", całus Thomasa złożony w czoło wzruszonej wokalistki, dyskretne uśmiechy grającego solówki Vidala, maestro bawiący się niczym gwiazda rocka, czy w końcu śpiewająca razem z zespołem, przełykająca łzy szczęścia fanka - za każdym razem wyłapywać będziecie coś nowego.

Oczywiście głównym daniem jest wideo, ale to najbardziej promowane wydanie fizyczne (2xCD+DVD+BD) zawierać będzie również pewne dodatki. Co prawda akurat do bonusowego fragmentu prób nie miałem dostępu, ale już do zawartości płytek audio: jak najbardziej. Materiał znakomicie broni się bez ruchomych obrazków - wszystko brzmi odpowiednio mocno, ale gdzie trzeba to i pozostawia miejsce do oddechu. Co ważne: poszczególne części show są dość długie. Taka wersja CD ostatniej koncertówki (co ciekawe: również z orkiestrą) Moonspell irytowała małą ilością kawałków per nośnik, natomiast tutaj mamy w zasadzie dwa pełne koncerty. Nie da się na ten element narzekać. Podobnie jak na całe wydawnictwo: to po prostu mokry sen każdego fana Therion. Który się spełnił.

Po In Concert (2002), Live in the USA (2003) i New Light - Live in Concert to już czwarte koncertowe wydawnictwo Karnataki z materiałem wizyjnym. Secrets of Angels - Live in Concert został zarejestrowany 25 czerwca 2016 roku w londyńskiej O2 Academy Islington w ramach serii koncertów promujących ich ostatni album Secrets Of Angels. I tu ciekawa informacja dla polskich fanów, bowiem następny po tym występie koncert grupy odbył się w… Polsce. Formacja zagrała u nas w Toruniu w ramach X Festiwalu Rocka Progresywnego i był to pierwszy oraz jak dotąd jedyny koncert zespołu w naszym kraju.

Na Secrets Of Angels - Live in Concert widzimy skład, który już nie istnieje (ciągłe roszady w tym zakresie to cecha charakterystyczna Walijczyków). W zespole nie ma już Carloenrico Pinny, Çagriego Tozluoglu, Jimmy’ego Pallagrosi oraz – co najistotniejsze – wokalistki Hayley Griffiths, która jest niewątpliwie ozdobą tego wydawnictwa.

Jego tytuł nie jest przypadkowy. Muzycy w całości prezentują album i nie ukrywam, że sprawia mi to ogromną satysfakcję. Bo uważam Secrets Of Angels za najlepszą płytą w dyskografii formacji, z najciekawszymi, najbardziej przejmującymi kompozycjami. I one na koncercie bronią się fantastycznie. Fairytale Lies jest dla mnie ich najpiękniejszym utworem, ale też świetnie wypadają Poison Ivy, Because of You, Forbidden Dreams czy tytułowy, epicki Secrets of Angels. Setlistę uzupełnia wybór nagrań z wcześniejszych płyt w tym najstarszy Dreamer z The Storm oraz wielowątkowy i rozbudowany Serpent and The Sea z The Gathering Light.

Uwagę przykuwa przede wszystkim Hayley Griffiths – rudowłosa wokalistka, ujmująca nie tylko sporymi możliwościami głosowymi i interpretacyjnymi, strojami (zmienia je trzykrotnie), ale też powabnym, bądź kiedy trzeba, energetycznym tańcem.

Produkcja jest tu raczej standardowa, kilka kamer, bez jakichś wyjątkowych ujęć. Ot, tradycyjna rejestracja wydarzenia w niewielkim klubie, na niedużej scenie, bez scenograficznych fajerwerków. Widać, że popracowano nad materiałem audio i gdzie trzeba pododawano trochę ścieżek (np. dodatkowe harmonie wokalne). W dwóch skromnych bonusach dostajemy galerię zdjęć oraz kilkuminutowy filmik Access All Areas, w którym towarzyszymy zespołowi na zapleczu przed koncertem oraz podczas spotkań z fanami już po wydarzeniu. Przyjemna rzecz.

During its initial four-year existence, The Bears lived a pop music lifetime. It enjoyed an auspicious, boisterous beginning in 1985 as the next big thing. The buzz was considerable. Sold-out gigs worldwide, two studio albums and multiple media blitzes pointed to a long-term future. But by 1988, disillusion stemming from punctured promises and evaporating support—not to mention a serious dose of bad luck—sealed the band's fate.

Typical music industry shenanigans, some might say. But The Bears were supposed to be different. After all, this was a band with a serious pedigree. It was comprised of guitarist-vocalist Adrian Belew, formerly of King Crimson, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa; and drummer Chris "Deathy" Arduser, guitarist-vocalist Rob Fetters and bassist Bob Nyswonger—three quarters of the Raisins, a popular, renowned act that enjoyed several regional hits across America.

The Bears crafted eclectic, intelligent pop songs full of gorgeous harmonies, inventive lyrics and first-rate musicianship. The Cincinnati, Ohio-based act struck a rare balance between the approachable and artistic. Further, it was a band with a plan. It predicted its willingness to work incessantly and do anything but compromise the music could help it win a global audience. What it couldn't predict was the abrupt end of the early-to-mid-'80s pop renaissance that saw the likes of Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson and XTC scoring hits with left-of-center material. Nor could it predict its record label going under in the midst of the tour for its second album. And with Belew simultaneously being courted as David Bowie's musical director and by Atlantic Records for a solo deal, the group's dissolution became inevitable—though they all remained the best of friends...

Back in March of 2020 I was laid-off because of the pandemic and I spent my free time writing a series of 50 DVD reviews called the Covideo Chronicles. It was fun and productive! What comes around goes around and in February 2023 I have been laid off again! Over the past three years I have accumulated another stack of about 25 DVDs to review. Additionally, it has long been a personal goal of mine, and Metal-Rules.com, to review every Hard Rock and Heavy Metal DVD on the planet. Over the years we have reviewed hundreds of stand-alone DVD’s, more than almost every other Metal webzine. So instead of sulking and/or wasting my time I’m going to review as many as I can in the month of February. It’s cold outside here in Canada so it beats going outside and/or looking for work! Feel free to enjoy all the reviews in this feature.

As most Metal fans know, Metal Mind Productions based in Poland is Eastern Europe’s largest, most successful Heavy Metal company. With many divisions they have a record label, a magazine as well as doing concert promotion and post-production. MMP has released many (over 50!) Heavy Metal DVD’s, with wide distribution, most of which are pro-shot concerts in Poland and/or concerts of their Metalmania Festival. This performance was captured in October 7, 2002 in Krakow as a special one-time event. This live concert was not part of the MetalMania festival but rather one of those ‘live-in-the-TV-studio’ productions.

The DVD itself is very decent. The booklet is very good, 8-pages with quite a long history essay of the band. The animated menus and background music is above average and there are quite a few bonus features as well.

The concert is a little short at just over an hour, probably so they could edit it down and air it on TV. There is a sizeable stage and some decent production values. The sound is clear and there are many camera angles and decent editing. It’s pretty hyper, lots of backlit strobe, which may not be to some people preference. Overall, the production value is very high.

There are lots of bonus features but as is often the case, these features which might have seemed neat at the time are outdated by modern standards. For example, desktop images and screensavers which probably won’t work on a mobile device these days.

There is an interview with all the members of the band. The band look tired and maybe even a bit bored. The camera is way too close as well! There is a bit of a language barrier as the Polish interviewer is speaking to the Norwegians in English but everyone does their best. It runs about 30 minutes.

What I feel is most valuable are six rare audio tracks. For Enslaved fans this is incredible. Four songs are from their ‘94 Demo, the pre-production for the FROST album and the other two’ Sleipnr’ and ‘Viking Metal, have never been released before. To the best of my knowledge, they are still only available on the DVD to this day.

To date, Enslaved, oddly enough, have only done the two home videos, LIVE RETALIATION being the first. This is mandatory for all Enslaved fans.

It seems odd that in their four decades of existence (admittedly, with some definite gaps in activity) Brand X has never officially released any type of concert video document. Then again, perhaps it's not all that surprising. Brand X has always been a musicians' band. Image never seemed to be a concern. It is fitting that this line-up would be the one to have the honor of being captured in the first Brand X concert film. During its first era, in the late 70s, the band would change its line-up not just from album to album or tour to tour, but sometimes even from night to night. Mind you, this was never a bad thing; Some of the finest musicians in the jazz/fusion/progressive rock movements came through the band, leaving their mark and bringing their own approaches and styles into the performances and recordings. Consequently, it is notable that this current line-up, consisting of founders John Goodsall (guitar) and Percy Jones (bass), along with Chris Clark (keyboards), Scott Weinberger (percussion), and Kenny Grohowski (drums), is one of the most stable that the band has ever had.

And it shows. The band gels and shines. Fans of the band, and aficionados of jazz/fusion, will be blown away by the interpretations of their classic material. The renditions maintain just enough fidelity to their original recordings, but throw in plenty of twists and turns, and inject a whole lot more muscle. Also, whereas, from album to album, the original recordings varied wildly in terms of personnel and production style, in this collection, the sonics are the only constant in a program of varied and dynamic music. Feeling much less like a greatest hits concert, the program plays like a conceptually whole suite.

Founders Goodsall and Jones sound as good as ever, and the new members certainly help make the music feel new and alive. Much of the new muscle comes from drummer Kenny Grohowski, who attacks the drums with an aggressive panache. One of the best things about the video is being able to see, even with his speed and power, the elegant fluidity in his playing. Alongside him, percussionist Scott Weinberger alternates between bringing droplets of color and throwing gasoline on the fire, vigorously attacking his rig in time with his counterpart. Keyboardist Chris Clark, brings his studious virtuosity to the music, but also at times a subtle, unexpected mischievousness. Reminding the audience that Brand X's original members had been active participants in England's prog and glam rock movements, Clark drops in little licks from Yes and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer into his phrases and improvisations. Once again, his solo piano rendition of "Maybe I'll Lend You Mine After All" (including a musical quote from ELP's "Trilogy") is pure gold.

The cover art reveals much about the visual approach to the film: A flying saucer, straight out of a 1950's B-movie hovering low in the sky on an empty road in the American south-west (Roswell, anyone?), with a giant blood moon ominously rising over the horizon. For the most part a straight concert document, it occasionally indulges in effects and tricky visual edits that seem aimed to emphasize the atmospheric qualities of the music hinted at by the cover: Mysterious, spacey, soaring, while occasionally menacing and foreboding. While some looking for an unadulterated fly-on-the-wall experience may find some of the edits to be a touch gimmicky and distracting, they are consistent with and inspired by the feel of the music.

At the heart of it, Brand X's music is about mood, texture, atmosphere, and dynamics. Frequently spacey or contemplative, it is also kinetic and driving (isn't anger a mood, too?). Brand X Live: The Rites of Spring Festival 2018 does an amazing job of guiding the listener/viewer on a voyage, drifting through different sensations, being carried through subtle changes in texture as well as not-so subtle changes in tempo and volume, while never being pulled out of the over-arching experience.
