Quarantième: Live à Paris to także celebracja ponownego zjednoczenia kultowego składu DT w składzie James LaBrie (wokal), John Pertrucci (gitary), John Myung (bas), Jordan Rudess (klawisze) i Mike Portnoy (perkusja).

Ten koncert to prawdziwy przywilej przebywania w tym samym miejscu i bycia świadkiem absolutnej wirtuozerii na scenie. Choć zespół nigdy nie odchodzi w stronę improwizacji, w utworach jest mnóstwo fragmentów, w których muzycy mogą popisać się swoimi umiejętnościami i zademonstrować swoje umiejętności.

Nie ma tu jednak zbędnego popisywania się, każda nuta jest dokładnie tam, gdzie powinna być w kontekście muzycznym. Choć długie partie instrumentalne są dobrze udokumentowane, by zirytować niedowiarków, fani Dream Theater przychodzą na koncerty, by doświadczyć tej muzycznej zręczności i uciec od świata zewnętrznego na trzygodzinny koncert do swojego własnego, równoległego wszechświata...

Co robić, gdy zaplanowane koncerty nie mogą się odbyć, bo świat ogarnięty został pandemią groźnego wirusa? Można na przykład zebrać się w sali prób lub jakimś studiu, zwołać ekipę filmującą i wystąpić przed takim audytorium, a materiał opublikować w sieci w formie streamingu. Pozwoli to fanom na obcowanie z muzyką ulubionych artystów, a im samym ułatwi przetrwanie tych ciężkich czasów. Następnie nagranie, po odpowiedniej obróbce, można wytłoczyć na różnego rodzaju nośnikach i zrobić z tego pełnowartościowe wydawnictwo „koncertowe”. Tym tropem poszło wielu wykonawców, że wspomnę choćby o recenzowanych na naszych łamach albumach The Pineapple Thief („Nothing But The Truth”), RPWL („God Has Failed – Live & Personal”) czy Airbag („A Day In The Studio”). Teraz do tego grona dołączyło sześciu muzyków z grupy Gazpacho.

Na miejsce „koncertu” wybrano budynek starej szkoły w Fredrikstad (około 90 km na południe od Oslo), w którym mieści się centrum kulturalno–konferencyjne St. Croix (od nazwy starej duńskiej kolonii z czasów gdy Norwegia wraz z Danią tworzyły jedno państwo), będące także miejscem prób zespołu podczas przygotowań do tras. Tam rankiem 25 października 2020 roku grupa wraz z filmowcami zebrała się w auli, by dokonać nagrań, a właściwie zarejestrować próbę przed trasą, która nie mogła się odbyć. Wcześniej zdecydowano, że pełna produkcja sceniczna i występ przed pustą widownią będzie bez sensu i zamiast tego zdecydowano się na ascetyczne otoczenie: tylko muzycy (wymienię ich w kolejności jaką zajęli na scenie, czyli Robert Risberget Johansen grający na perkusji, Kristian ‘Fido’ Torp na basie i kontrabasie, Jon-Arne Vilbo na gitarach, śpiewający Jan-Henrik Ohme, Thomas Alexander Andersen – czarujący grą na instrumentach klawiszowych oraz Mikael Krømer na skrzypcach, mandolinie i gitarach) ustawieni w okrąg plus statyczne światło.

Setlistę zdominował, wówczas świeżo wydany, materiał z płyty „Fireworker”, który, przynajmniej mi, pozwolił ponownie zakochać się w twórczości szóstki Norwegów. Mamy tu zatem epicki, prawie dwudziestominutowy, „Space Cowboy” z potężną partią chóru, trzy krótsze utwory: „Hourglass” z cudownymi dźwiękami skrzypiec, dynamiczny „Fireworker”, spokojny „Antique” oraz piętnastominutową kwintesencję muzycznego smaku Gazpacho w postaci pieśni „Sapien”. Te pięć ścieżek w tekstach stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie: kim lub czym jesteśmy - samodzielnymi istotami z własną wolą czy też jedynie narzędziem, które jest wykorzystywane aby podtrzymać byt, pojazdem, w którym aktualnie podróżuje „To”, czyli tytułowy „Fireworker”. Po bardziej szczegółowy opis zapraszam do tekstu opisującego ten piękny album, który tu, choć pozbawiony zmian w stosunku do studyjnego pierwowzoru, brzmi bardziej naturalnie, a jednocześnie pełniej i potężniej.

Na deser otrzymujemy nagranie „Substitute For Murder” z drugiego krążka zespołu, „When The Earth Lets Go” (2004) oraz fantastyczny finał w postaci fragmentu albumu „Tick Tock” (2009) - obie części kompozycji „The Walk”, w których skrzypce Krømera w połączeniu ze śpiewem Ohme wbijają w ziemię. Na samym końcu znajduje się nagranie, od którego rozpoczęło się moje obcowanie z muzyką zespołu, czyli cudowny utwór „Winter Is Never”.

Tak kończy się ten trwający godzinę i kwadrans set. Przynajmniej jeśli chodzi o płytę kompaktową i wersję wytłoczoną na dwóch winylowych krążkach. Na edycji specjalnej, zawierającej dwa kompakty, płyty blu-ray i DVD umieszczone w grubej książce (tzw. earbook) oraz na wydanym samodzielnie krążku blu-ray, otrzymujemy jeszcze pochodzącą z albumu „Night” (2007) kompozycję „Chequered Light Buildings”.

Poświęćmy teraz kilka słów wersji wizyjnej wydawnictwa. Zarejestrowany za pomocą trzech kamer obraz nie powala dynamiką, ale, tak jak wspomniałem wcześniej, Gazpacho postawił na intymność tego wydarzenia oraz na to, by przedstawić zespół tak jak wygląda na próbach (OK, zapewne normalnie jest większa interakcja słowna między muzykami, tu jedyne słowa, jakie padają to te w tekstach utworów). W niektórych fragmentach obraz celowo jest czarno-biały, co podkreśla surowość przekazu. Jeśli chodzi o dźwięk, to jest idealnie wyważony, zarówno w wersji stereo, jak i przestrzennej. Za miks stereo odpowiada Tine, surround zaś Thor Legvold. Atrakcyjność płyty blu-ray podnoszą teledyski do utworów z płyt „Fireworker” oraz „Soyuz”, filmy dokumentalne o powstawaniu utworu „Space Cowboy” i genezie warstwy lirycznej ostatniego albumu, opowieść autora jego szaty graficznej, Antonio Seijasa, oraz fragment koncertu z 21 września 2019 roku w klubie Cultuurpodium Boerderij w holenderskim Zoetermeer z trasy promującej płytę „Soyuz”. Tu już mamy pełną produkcję ze zmieniającymi się światłami oraz wizualizacjami na ekranie za plecami muzyków. Szkoda tylko, że nie zdecydowano się na zamieszczenie całości występu, a jedynie na jego godzinny skrót. Jest tu też specjalna wersja utworu „Winter Is Never” w wykonaniu Andersona i Ohme. Tylko pianino i wokal. Bardzo surowo i jednocześnie nadal pięknie...

Po „A Night At Loreley” (2009), “London” (2011) i “Night Of The Demon” (2015) dostajemy do rąk czwarte wydawnictwo koncertowe mistrzów klimatycznego rocka. Inne niż wcześniejsze, bo i czasy są zdecydowanie odmienne od tych, które pamiętamy sprzed, powiedzmy, 3 lat. W chwili gdy piszę te słowa zespół przygotowuje się (tym razem w domu basisty, z uwagi na fakt, że sala w St. Croix jest zajęta przez innego wykonawcę) do „prawdziwych” występów w ramach wspólnej trasy z grupą Pure Reason Revolution, przełożonej z 2020 roku. Niestety, ostatecznie ominie ona Polskę (w pierwotnym terminie nasz kraj był uwzględniony). Cóż, pozostaje naciśnięcie przycisku „play” i rozkoszowanie się tymi wspaniałymi dźwiękami oraz obrazami podanymi w bardzo smakowity sposób.

GAZPACHO is the group founded in 1996 similar to Marillion at the start, quickly sensitized by Radiohead and having acquaintances with Coldplay; an eclectic band with the soulful voice of Jan; an intimate whimsical rock art concept. They give us here a studio set in their space in Ste Croix following an unprecedented streaming in 2020 in the midst of a pandemic; Gazpacho always asks itself its questions of the struggle of man with his vital force.
'Space Cowboy' is the 1st of the five titles of 'Fireworker' starting this unique live with the reverberating voice à la Lana Del Rey, the electric violin and the majestic choirs coming to give an overwhelming musical sensation, the grip of the hovering departure, the finish on an Oldfield tinged with 'Carmina Burana'. 'Hourglass' recalls the bewitchment of Michael's violin and his plaintive tune, 'Fireworker' on Jon's idyllic voice, depressed, melancholy and beautiful; Robert with his pads bringing a tribal atmosphere on his acoustic drums, magnified on 'Antique' where the electronics come forward with hypnotic loops. 'Sapien' concludes this set with an intense gothic title, filled with musical waves; the live becomes indecent we have the impression that they play only for us; that spatial voice-over sequence still gives me chills; the piano à la Japan adds to it, the slide guitar settles on an arid, icy tempo. 'Substitute for Murder' for the beginning of the encore, title of 'When Earth Lets Go' to warm up a little before attacking the two 'The Walk Part I and II' with the oriental break and 'Winter Is Never' from the album 'Tick Tock' for a final hymn to their unique sound.

Gazpacho therefore staged itself in the raw state giving itself without correction, the expanded stream is remixed in 5.1, CD, Blu-Ray, LP and DVD available with more than 2 hours of bonuses, videos, an interview and a 2019 concert; a concert film from a rehearsal, raw formwork; a stunning rehearsal, a unique pandemic studio concert, an intense, dreamlike and simply majestic album. Gazpacho has done well by revisiting its latest album and adding a few reminder titles to allow us to immerse ourselves in their inimitable sound space.

Screaming Headless Torsos have injected the jazz fusion scene with a much-needed new energy, after guitarist David Fuze Fiuczynski's revitalization of the genre with his 1996 album "Lunar Crush". He joins forces with the extraordinary vocalist Dean Bowman, and a rhythm section comprised of Fima Ephron (bass), Daniel Sadownick (percussion), and Gene Lake (drums) to deliver the group's signature combination of jazz with heavy riffs and ambient sound on "Live In New York & Paris". This 2 DVD set of two legendary, sold-out performances is professionally shot, recorded, and mixed. The concerts were held at New York City's Knitting Factory in 1996, and New Morning in Paris, 2004.
