I guess the most fitting analogy to use here would be that Black Earth is to Arch Enemy what Heaven & Hell was to Black Sabbath, being the reunion of a beloved prior lineup in all but name. And while it obviously couldn’t hope to generate the same ludicrous amount of hype as when we all heard Dio, Iommi, and Butler were getting back together, I can remember it causing a stir in the metal scene all the same. The musicians who brought us the first 3 classic AE albums, still widely considered to be the band’s best, are all getting back together for some shows? Despite having never considered myself a die-hard fan of the band, in any incarnation, it was impossible not to be intrigued. Limited to a mere couple of tours in Japan, few are the people fortunate enough to have experienced one of these concerts firsthand (I count myself very lucky to have done so in 2019). But for those who never got the chance, 20 Years of Dark Insanity ought to be a fantastic consolation. Indeed, this is so much more than a mere live release. Never mind that on those terms alone, it’s easily one of the best I’ve ever heard/seen, this is without a doubt the single best product Arch Enemy has ever put out, effectively functioning as a top shelf re-recording and best-of to boot.

For my money, every song on here utterly blows its studio version away. A big part of this is down to Johan Liiva, whose vocal technique has evolved significantly since he first laid down these tracks in the 90’s. Though I’ve encountered plenty of praise for his performances on those albums, it’s not an opinion I share; his unwieldy barking and grunting was the thing above all else that kept me from giving those records the attention they otherwise clearly deserved on a musical level. Here, he sounds like a completely different vocalist. More ghoulish, eerie, and with a somewhat desiccated quality, as if he were slowly rotting from the inside. To put it another way, he sounds much like how the skeletal depictions of the band members on the cover look. Instead of coming off like he’s straining to shout his lungs out over top of the guitars, his growls sit comfortably in the mix as part of the arrangement, content to serve more of an atmospheric role than demanding to be a point of focus (that is, and always should be, the domain of the Amott brothers in this band). Though I still wouldn’t think to rank him high in my personal pantheon of death metal singers, his improved performance alone is enough to make me reach for this over any of the first 3 studio records.

The rest of the band is simply on fire throughout, tearing through these old classics with enough vigor to make you swear no time had passed at all since their release. They don’t quite manage to squeeze the entirety of the Liiva-era into the setlist, but it’s about as close as anyone could reasonably expect. All the fan favorites are accounted for, replete with plenty of crowd support; hearing hundreds of frenzied Japanese fans singing along with the guitar melodies in songs like “The Immortal”, “Pilgrim”, and “Bury Me an Angel” is simply spine-tingling. And while perhaps not every tune from Stigmata or Burning Bridges could make the cut, the second half of the show sees them run through the debut album, Black Earth in full, with a performance so fantastic it all but renders the original 1996 version obsolete. The newly added piano/orchestral intro preceding it is the cherry on top, reinterpreting the signature theme from the closer “Fields of Desolation”. This paired with the reprise in the middle of “Cosmic Retribution”, and then capped off with the track proper at the end actually provides the album with an overarching feeling of cohesion, almost akin to a conceptual work. Add to this the brothers’ gloriously thick guitar tone and Liiva’s refined vocal style, and it should be little surprise I’ve never touched the studio release since.

… huh? What do you mean there’s a new song? Well, yes, there is actually a new original studio cut, “Darkness Has Returned” on the CD version. Truthfully, I can probably count the number of times I’ve listened to it on a single hand, including just prior to writing this review. To its credit, it’s a fair bit more musically adventurous than your average track from the Gossow and White-Gluz eras, particularly where that slower, classically influenced middle section is concerned. The primary riffs that drive the song however do tend to fall back into that modern stomping territory characteristic of the band’s later material, and the full package ultimately doesn’t measure up to the rest of what’s on here. While not bad, it goes to show that merely revisiting and even successfully revitalizing one’s older work usually isn’t enough to get those same creative juices flowing again. This song stands in stark contrast to the rest of the album not just for the lack of a screaming audience, but for the fact it was written in a different time, by a band who are now in a much different headspace than they were 20 years before. It’s fine for a listen every once in a blue moon, but will never be what I’m looking to hear whenever I decide to pop these discs in.

With that aside, this is the band’s best release by a mile in my book, regardless of whatever name it was put out under. And what’s a name matter anyway? Much like anyone who had the opportunity to see Heaven & Hell live all but surely claims to have seen a Black Sabbath concert, I will always refer to the show I saw in 2019 celebrating the 20th anniversary of Burning Bridges as an Arch Enemy concert. The same holds true for this album. Except this isn’t just any Arch Enemy album. This is THE Arch Enemy album. The one I’ll be spinning for years longer than any other, that’s for sure.

Tribuzy is a Brazilian Power Metal band fronted by singer Renato Tribuzy. In 2005, they released the band’s first (and so far only) studio album. The album (Execution) featured guest performances by Heavy Metal legends such as Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex-Helloween), Matt Sinner (Sinner), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear, ex-Gamma Ray, ex-Tyran Pace), and Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween). Later the same year Tribuzy was able to perform the album on stage with all of the guest musicians (except Kiske) in São Paulo, Brazil.

The first four songs on the album are sung by Renato Tribuzy himself. “Aggressive” is actually an aggressive and fast Power Metal song. You’ll be impressed with Renato’s voice, which roughly can be said to sound like a mix between Dickinson and Scheepers. The two other songs, “Divine Disgrace,” and “The Attempt,” are also fast and aggressive Power Metal songs in the typical Brazilian style, and your thoughts may go to bands like Angra when you’re listening to this album.

“Forgotten Time” features Angra guitarist Kiko Loureiro. This results in some nice guitar harmonies and great solos. So does the next song; “Nature Of Evil.” This one is a little more Symphonic and features a guest performance by Matt Sinner on vocals, as well as the already mentioned Loureiro. The song is fast and the music gets some variation with Sinner’s Melodic Rock vocals. Renato gives extra strength to the song when he doubles Sinners’ singing with his high-pitched voice. It’s great to listen to strong material performed by two fantastic vocalists.

The next duet is performed by Ralf Scheepers and Renato. “Absolution” is the longest track on the album — about ten minutes. It also sees a guest performance on guitar by Roland Grapow. The song starts slow with Scheepers singing over a melodic part played by keyboard, bongo drums (!), and bass. After a while, the song speeds up and you get the high-pitched Metal singing that fans have come to know Scheepers for.

“Web Of Life” also features Grapow on guitar. This song is written in Helloween style, and could easily have fit into the band’s set list, while Grapow still was their guitar player. “Execution” is probably the best song on the album. Renato sings high-pitched in his best Rob Halford style, and a guest performance (once again) by Kiko Laureiro kicks ass. He plays great solos and there are always some great guitar harmonies wherever he goes. The song is a lot darker than the rest of the songs. The exception is the guitar solo in the middle of the song, where the band slows down and Laureiro plays a beautiful solo before it all speeds up again.

“Beast In The Light” is the last of the live songs on the record. This one features a guest performance by Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Roy Z. As always, Dickinson delivers the goods and his strong Heavy Metal voice fits great into Renato’s more high-pitched Power Metal vocals. “The Means” is a bonus track from the Japanese release of Execution. This is an acoustic song with acoustic guitar, violins, keyboards, and vocals; a beautiful ending to the album.

Execution Live Reunion is produced by Roy Z and Renato Tribuzy. Usually when Roy Z is involved in the production, you know it’s going to sound great, and this is no exception. The band is tight as hell and delivers world class Power Metal with this live release. If you like Brazilian Power Metal, this is going to rock your world. And, if that’s not enough, take a look at the line-up!

By popular demand, Radiant Records presents a limited edition 4 CD/2 Blu-ray edition of the full sets by Flying Colors and Neal Morse Band at Morsefest 2019.

Flying Colors made their Morsefest debut at this show, which was also the first live show to include songs from their album Third Degree. As well as the concert debuts of “More,” “You Are Not Alone,” and “Crawl,” the band included a range of highlights from their first two albums. Backed by string players and backing singers, this show was a joyous event for fans and band alike.

The Neal Morse Band played The Great Adventure for the final time in the run supporting the album at Morsefest. For this grand finale, the band were supported by backing singers, percussion, a horn section and string players in an awesome rendition of the album. Morsefest 2019 closed with the Neal Morse Band playing “The Great Medley”, at 25 minute summary of highlights from the albums from Testimony through to Similitude of a Dream.

The 4 CD/2 Blu-ray also features a host of bonus features including two of the VIP Q&A sessions from Morsefest 2019, featuring all of the members of both bands taking questions from the crowd. There are also some additional multiscreen video mixes of tracks from both Flying Colors and the Neal Morse Band. More than three decades later, Overkill are still the same feisty, scrappy band heard on their Feel the Fire debut. It's all chronicled on Live at Overhausen, the newest live record coming from the New Jersey blue collar thrashers, which not only revisits the band's first album, but 1991's Horrorscope as well.

On April 16, 2016, Overkill hit the stage at Turbinenhalle 2 in Oberhausen, Germany to revisit the 30th and 25th anniversaries of those two albums respectively, playing them each in full. They're standouts in the Overkill catalog and the fans in Germany got hit with a double dose, but if you weren't there, you can take part in the experience with the performance of "Hammerhead" (seen above) offering the first glimpse of Overkill's live dominance.

"From the stage to your eyes and ears! Live in Overhausen, celebrating Feel the Fire and Horrorscope in one filmed/recorded concert in Germany from 2016," said frontman Bobby Blitz. Tak kursanty, jak wspomniałem, w tym semestrze zajmiemy się też i płytami prog-rockowymi, ale na pewno nie takimi, które wszyscy znają, tylko takimi, które warto poznać.

W przypadku The Enid warto poznać i płytę, która jest bardzo dobra, a także zarówno i zespół, który jest bardzo ciekawy. To, że wcześniej nie trafił na łamy naszego portalu jest na pewno sporym niedopatrzeniem, dlatego postaram się tą dziurę, przynajmniej częściowo, dzisiaj załatać. Niedopatrzeniem jest dlatego, że jeśli mówimy o prog-rocku jako połączeniu muzyki klasycznej i rockowej, to właśnie The Enid potraktowało ten związek najbardziej literalnie, jak się tylko dało – od mocno klasycyzujących rockowych kompozycji, aż po muzykę klasyczną graną na rockowych instrumentach. Oglądaliśmy to razem z tatą Agnieszki – ja dla przyjemności, on bardziej dlatego, że nie miał nic innego do roboty. Muzyka rockowa specjalnie go nie interesuje, zdecydowanie woli klasyczną, którą zresztą bardzo dobrze zna – dlatego wszystkie nawiązania i zapożyczenia szybko wyłapywał – pojawiały się takie nazwiska jak Mahler, Liszt, Elgar, Musorgski. Takie bardzo klasycyzujące rzeczy są głównie na pierwszych płytach, potem to trochę zaczęło przypominać wczesny Alan Parsons Project, ale dalej było fajnie. Przynajmniej moim zdaniem.

Nie jest to zbyt popularna grupa, ale ma całkiem sporo zagorzałych fanów, dzięki którym do dziś funkcjonuje. Ale jest też sporo osób, które uważają, że jest to impreza niespecjalnie poważna, a przede wszystkim nudna. W jakimś sensie tak, bo The Enid to kapela mocno specyficzna. Harmonie, melodie – rodem z muzyki klasycznej, raczej nie uświadczy czegoś, co można by nazwać piosenką. Chociażby z tego powodu, że to przede wszystkim muzyka instrumentalna.

Dzisiejsza recenzja jest recenzją trochę kombinowaną. W nagłówku stoi DVD „Live at The Hammersmith”, ale zajmiemy się i DVD, i płytami audio. Nagrano to wszystko co prawda podczas jednego koncertu, tyle, z każde z tych wydawnictw ma nieco inny repertuar. Początkowo ten materiał ukazał się w 1983 roku jako dwie, osobne płyty winylowe „Live at The Hammersmith Vol. I” i „Vol. II”, kilka lat później ukazał się kompakt, ale krótszy niż obie płyty, poza tym zawierał też utwory, których na analogach nie było. Jeszcze później ukazały się na CD obie regularne części koncertu, ale dalej jako osobne wydawnictwa, chociaż razem to trwa nieco ponad siedemdziesiąt minut i nie byłoby problemu, żeby zapakować to na jeden CD, albo chociażby do jednego pudełka. Czy jest jakiekolwiek wydanie łączone – nie mam pojęcia. Też chciałbym mieć. U nas raczej nie praktykuje się recenzowania dwóch płyt w jednej recenzji, dlatego postanowiłem dołożyć jeszcze DVD i pod tym szyldem napisać o całości. Aha, w kwestii formalnej – DVD ukazało się w 2010 roku. Chociaż bardziej pasuje do tego określenie video-bootleg, bo jakość techniczna tego materiału jest niespecjalna.

Materiał audio wypada tutaj dużo lepiej, bo w zasadzie to DVD jest do jednokrotnego oglądnięcia i postawienia na półkę – raczej dokument, niż pełnoprawny koncert. Ale wszystkie moje zastrzeżenia są natury technicznej – słaba jakość obrazu, dźwięk też momentami nie bardzo – bo sam występ jest bardzo dobry. Bardzo fajnie się to ogląda. Teoretycznie powinien być to raczej statyczny show, bo muzycy do grania mają naprawdę dużo i pewnym sensie jest – kilku facetów przy parapetach – oni nie są zbyt mobilni. Za to gitarzyści czasami hulają jak na koncercie hard’n’heavy. DVD ma tą przewagę nad CD, że znalazły się na nim dwa covery – „Summer Holliday” i „Wild Thing”. Ten pierwszy do słuchanie się nie nadaje, ale do oglądania – jak najbardziej – perkusista, Dave Store wykonuje (tylko na samych instrumentach perkusyjnych) ten słynny przebój Cliffa Richarda w stylu iście myntypythonowskim. „Wild Thing” jest już normalniejsze, zresztą wersję audio możemy znaleźć na nieco późniejszej koncertówce „The Stand” – Godfrey okazuje się facetem z sporym poczuciem humoru, przy okazji wprowadzając nieco luźniejszą atmosferę na koncercie pełnym muzyki zaiste poważnej. Ale muzyczny kabaret to tylko kilka minut DVD „Live at The Hammersmith Odeon”. CD bez tych przerywników wydaje się dużo dostojniejsze. Natomiast muzycznie ozdobą tego koncertu było „Fand/The Song of Fand” (różne tytuły na różnych wydawnictwach, ale to ten sam utwór). Najdłuższy, najładniejszy, najbardziej patetyczny i najlepszy. I to jest ta wersja najbardziej kanoniczna, bo w wersji studyjnej było to znacznie krótsze. Tu chyba najlepiej udało się połączenie rocka i klasyki, że słyszymy i to, i to. Prawie tak dobrze wypada też „In The Region of The Summer Stars” – w podobny sposób zrobiony, tyle, że nieco krótszy. Widać, że takie „samo gęste” umieszczono na „Vol. I”, a na „Vol. II” już takich killerów nie ma, prawie nie ma – jest przecież „Albion Fair”. Tak wyszło dlatego, że „Vol. II” ponoć miało być tylko wydawnictwem fanclubowym, swego rodzaju dodatkiem do Jedynki. Ale w końcu oba są ogólnie dostępne i bardzo dobrze, bo to świetny kawałek rockowego (mimo wszystko) żywca.

The Enid jest zespołem na tyle specyficznym, że trudno mi tak na siłę udowadniać, że to świetna grupa i już. Moim zdaniem nagrali kilka znakomitych płyt (powtórzę się – trzy pierwsze przede wszystkim) i nagrali też sporo płyt słabszych, które też bardzo lubią słuchać. Po prostu pasuje mi ich muzyka – lubię taki patos, takie orkiestrowe aranżacje klawiszy, lubię jak taka muzyka grana jest „na bogato”. Na progarchivach The Enid wzbudza skrajne emocje – od zachwytów do flekowania. I pewnie z tych samych powodów jednym się to podoba, a inni nie cierpią – patos, itd. Ale moim zdaniem znać trzeba, żeby wiedzieć, co to jest, bo The Enid doszli do takiego miejsca w prog-rocku, że dalej od nich to już tylko ściana. Warto posłuchać „Touch Me”, „In The Region…”, czy „Aerie Faerie…” żeby wyrobić sobie o tym swoje zdanie.

Watching a DVD from the seventies line up of The Enid has been a wish of mine for many years. I finally can watch it in my living room now, but it almost hadn't been possible to watch one of their concerts performed at the Hammersmith Odeon theatre in London on Friday March 2nd, 1979. Their record company at the time PYE Record, decided to wipe the original camera tapes because they decided to not pursue a video release. Strange, because in the week before this concert took place, PYE Records decided to have the show shot.

The whole show was shot using five cameras with audio recorded by Virgin Mobile.

However, the soundtrack had survived and was remarkably good. All that remained of the video was a rough mix of the show done on the night by the video company who had no idea of what to expect. The great audio and a recently discovered VHS copy of that rough video mix was recently donated to The Enidi (The Enid fan club) by Francis Lickerish who located the tape a little while ago. Thanks to this former Enid guitarist, they could put together a DVD of almost that whole show from the Hammersmith Odeon. Only Francis Lickerish's intro to Fand and Albion Fair were left out. For technical reasons, on the night they were not recorded.

But who cares! After all, a DVD with the title Live At Hammersmith Odeon with almost 90 minutes of footage from that concert is better than no footage at all.

The concert at the Odeon Hammersmith was done to support the Touch Me album. You could say that the band was at their peak during this period both in terms of popularity, and also musically. The previous five years had seen The Enid gradually build a large and dedicated following of fans releasing the classic progressive rock albums In The Region Of The Summer Stars (1976), Aerie Faerie Nonsense (1977) and Touch Me (1979). It's obvious that a selection of songs taken from those albums were done during that special moment at the Hammersmith Odeon. In those days it was very usual that the band start performances with their version of England's National Anthem. Therefore you can also enjoy God Save The Queen on this release. It is followed by Mayday Galliard from the band's second album. Two pieces that are still performed nowadays are next. Judgment and In The Region Of The Summer Stars from the debut album show that the band is in great shape. The line up of Francis Lickerish (guitar), Steve Stewart (guitar), Dave Storey (drums and percussion), Robert John Godfrey (keyboards and vocals),William Gilmour (keyboards), Tony Freer (keyboards and oboe) and Terry Pack (bass) hardly make any mistakes. Band leader Godfrey does not allow his fellow musicians to make mistakes and demands that everybody is completely focused just like a classical musician who reads the music from a paper sheet. Therefore, you almost get the idea that some of the music comes from a tape machine. But with three musicians behind the keyboards it's obvious that the musicians reach the same kind of level as they do on their studio albums. More songs follow after the two pieces of music from their debut album but it's little use to mention them all. All of the tracks from the band's first three releases are very well performed in a very serious and professional way. Despite the serious side of the music performed, the band also knows to bring some funny things to the show such as Dave Storey's bizarre version of Cliff Richards' Summer Holiday performed as a percussion solo, or the way Robert John Godfrey sings The Troggs' Wild Thing during the encore. In style, the band ends their set with The Dam Busters and Land Of Hope And Glory and gives you a very good moment of the well known Night Of The Proms event. You almost want to sing along or put your hands in the air to participate.

It's absolutely marvellous to see the old footage of a progressive rock band that most of the time tried to sound like a classical orchestra, but it has to be said that not everything on this disc is of very good quality. The original source of the material is mostly to blame. There are many technical problems on this DVD. The picture quality is very soft with not too much detail. Also, there are numerous drop-outs, glitches, and tracking errors visible on the screen throughout the show. Occasionally, the video is slightly out of sync with the soundtrack. Also, you can see that the people who shot the film did not know the band on stage that well. Sometimes the wrong musicians are filmed during a certain scene and you'll see the person who plays a solo too late. But due to the fact that this material from the archive is so unique, you can't give a bad verdict to this release. It's way better than the old footage that came up from the Twelfth Night vaults that was released on DVD as Reading Rock'83 (see review). This DVD contained mainly amateur shots from a band that was hitting its peak in those days, just like The Enid did on this release. Anybody who wants to see The Enid in modern day standards should watch their DVD Live At Town Hall, Birmingham (see review). But for nostalgic reasons, I will play the old stuff one more time because the music is so damn good!

On the stage of Jazz-à-Juan 2010, Joshua Redman achieves the feat of leading his two trios at the same time, and he does it with brilliance. Born in Berkeley in 1969 and trained at Harvard, this multi-influenced saxophonist is the son of the incredible musician Dewey Redman, himself a great jazz master and saxophonist. Here he immerses us in an atypical musical experience, where the symmetry created by this double trio is at its most captivating.

Since the 1990s, he has been collaborating with the most talented musicians of the new generation: Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove, Charlie Haden, but also previous generations, such as Chick Corea and Dave Brubeck. His name alone is now enough to evoke an unusual, technical, passionate and extremely creative playing. This concert is once again the tangible proof of an extraordinary musical capacity. The master leaves us simply amazed.

Pierwszy dzień festiwalu otwiera Oskar Cyms - Artysta Roku 2025. To wokalista, którego kariera rozpoczęła się w Polsacie, a dziś jest on jednym z najważniejszych wykonawców młodego pokolenia.
To on zaczyna żelazny punkt każdego sopockiego festiwalu, czyli Radiowy Hit Roku. Widzów i wspaniałą sopocką publiczność czeka zabawa w rytmie największych radiowych przebojów minionego roku w wykonaniu takich gwiazd jak Dawid Kwiatkowski, Kayah, Roxie Węgiel, Kasia Sienkiewicz, Wiktor Dyduła czy Pszona.
