The original video footage has been cleaned and the sound remixed by longtime Who collaborator Jon Astley but the show still retains a rawness that encapsulates the energy of The Who’s performance.

Epicki album „2112”, który gitarzysta Alex Lifeson określił jako „pierwszy album, na którym brzmieliśmy jak Rush”, jest powszechnie uważany za przełomowy w dorobku Rush. Choć był to czwarty album zespołu, powszechnie uważa się, że to właśnie na nim rozkwitło epickie brzmienie i ambitne podejście koncepcyjne zespołu. Opierając się presji wytwórni płytowych, by skupić się na krótszych, bardziej radiowych utworach, zespół nie poddał się i stworzył przełomowy, siedmioczęściowy, 20-minutowy utwór tytułowy, będący konceptualną suitą osadzoną w dystopijnej przyszłości.

Oprócz statusu kamienia milowego w twórczości, 2112 był również przełomem komercyjnym Rush, stając się pierwszym albumem zespołu, który trafił na listę Billboard LP i pierwszym albumem Rush, który uzyskał status złotej płyty w USA (później uzyskał status platynowej płyty). 2112 był również pierwszym platynowym albumem Rush w Kanadzie, co zapoczątkowało obecnie legendarne kanadyjskie tournée, którego kulminacją był trzydniowy występ w Massey Hall w Toronto. Materiał ten został nagrany na potrzeby pierwszego albumu koncertowego Rush, All the World's a Stage.

2112 to jeden z dwóch albumów Rush wymienionych w książce 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die . 2007 is the year that guitarist Allan Holdsworth makes a return to the public eye. With planned reissues of his long out-of-print discography and more extensive touring than he's done in years, this groundbreaking guitarist—long considered an icon by fusion fans and a guitarist's guitarist by other equally legendary six-stringers, including Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin—may finally be poised for the greater recognition he's always deserved.

In the fall of 2006, Holdsworth reunited with keyboardist Alan Pasqua, with whom he first worked in the late drummer Tony Williams' mid-'70s New Lifetime band. While that group released only two records, the first—Believe It (Sony, 1975)—is considered a fusion classic and features two especially enduring tracks, Holdsworth's "Fred and Pasqua's "Protocosmos. Both are included on Allan Holdsworth and Alan Pasqua featuring Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Haslip, filmed at Oakland's Yoshi's club at the end of September 2006. Given Holdsworth's long relationship with drummer Wackerman, bassist Haslip is the only new face here, though as co-founder of the popular contemporary jazz group Yellowjackets, he's by no means an unknown entity.

The DVD captures 85 minutes of material old and new. Holdsworth has sometimes been his own worst enemy, so self-critical that albums like Soft Works' Abracadabra (Tone Center, 2003), his collaboration with other alumni from '70s British jazz/rock group Soft Machine, ended up being far less than it could have been. The playing was never less than stellar, but equally it often felt a little sterile.

There's no danger of stasis here. Without the benefit of fixing and remixing, Holdsworth fans get to hear him warts and all—not that there are many to be found. His remarkable legato style, almost entirely eliminating the attack of his guitar, is in full force, but with his signature vibrato and tasteful use of whammy bar, this is the most energetic he's sounded in years. There's more attitude and less self-absorption, and it's a welcome change. Holdsworth's other concert DVD, Live at the Galaxy Theatre (Gnarly Geezer, 2002), suffered from a similar self-absorption as Abracadabra, whereas here, while he rarely cracks a smile, it's clear he's enjoying himself.

And how could he not? Wackerman, with the exception of Gary Husband, has long been Holdsworth's drummer of choice. Here, with a group that's in some respects paying tribute to the New Tony Williams Lifetime, Wackerman demonstrates the same paradoxical mix of power and finesse that made Williams such a potent and diverse musical force. He cops Williams' drum intro to "Fred, but after that one reference he's playing on his own turf. Capable of strong, propulsive grooves while responding to everything going on around him, he's busy at times but never superfluous or excessive. In fact, that's a defining characteristic of the entire show. There's plenty of high velocity playing going on, but it's all meaningful and purposeful, never the kind of aimless wanking that often gives fusion a bad name.

Haslip, like Wackerman, seems to know just how to balance energetic playing with sustained groove. Before Haslip became a known entity he was a progressive rock and fusion fan, so playing with Holdsworth may well be something of a dream come true. But at this point in his career he's absolutely an equal. His solo on the opening "The Fifth has the punch of Stanley Clarke but none of the self-aggrandizing ego that has shadowed Clarke for far too long. As it is for everyone else on the stage, the music is the thing, and while Holdsworth has worked primarily with Jimmy Johnson over the years, there's an undeniable chemistry with Haslip here that deserves further exploration.

Pasqua has, in recent years, been working in a more acoustic space. He's a member of drummer Peter Erskine's trio, and has released his own elegant piano trio disc, My New Old Friend (Cryptogramophone, 2005). Here, however, it's clear he's lost none of his fusion chops, or his ear for texture. While the majority of the time he's heard using either a Hammond-like organ tone or Fender Rhodes-like electric piano sound, he kicks in some serious distortion on a couple of tracks, including the funky closer, "Red Alert, and demonstrates he's as capable of near-relentless intensity as the rest of the group.

It's not all unrelenting, however. Holdsworth's intro to "Pud Wud is atmospheric, again demonstrating his unique voicings and a unique lyricism. Once the band is in the pool, it's a return to greater energy but also a change of pace. "San Michele features a beautiful piano intro from Pasqua that leads into an arpeggio-driven group piece that's reminiscent of early Mahavishnu Orchestra but, with Holdsworth's legato lines, a cleaner and less audacious version.

While it's a shared bill (and rightly so), the chance to see and hear Holdsworth live is the main attraction. Sporting both stereo and 5.1 surround mixes, the sound leaps out of the speakers. With seven cameras, some might suggest that there's a little too much jumping from shot to shot, but there's no shortage of opportunity to watch everyone at work. There's plenty of focus on Holdsworth, delivering his lightning-fast and visceral runs that seem nearly impossible to conceive let alone play, and producing his unique chord voicings that are equally difficult to fathom. There's a reason why Holdsworth has often been imitated but never copied, and any guitarist watching this DVD will see why. Holdsworth's hands simply don't fall on the instrument the way most guitarists' do.

This group will be hitting the road at various times throughout 2007, and Holdsworth will also be touring with a power trio of Wackerman and Johnson, so fans old and new will get a chance to catch him in a live setting from which he's been absent for far too long. 'Are we having a good time!?'
Oh yes Ray, we are. Frozen In The Moment is Redemption's first DVD after 3 major cd releases, the later two of which have been received by nothing but open arms in the progressive metal community. For those unfamiliar, Redemption is a project born out of the creative minds of guitar player Nick van Dyk and former Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder, the voice behind seminal progressive metal projects like Parallels and A Pleasant Shade of Gray. They play a style of progressive metal that can be roughly compared to Dream Theater with their heavy guitars, melodic hooks and use of keyboards that is more reminiscent of DT's Kevin Moore era, and this is probably why Dream Theater decided to take them along as a supporting act for their Chaos In Motion tour in 2007, on which this concert was filmed.

The concert itself is quite the sight to see, these guys are quite seasoned musicians. It also helps that Ray Alder has a good lot of experience as a major front man and knows how to work a crowd. They may be on a small stage, but they certainly make good use of what room is available to make for quite an energetic concert. While it is something of a short show this actually works to the dvd's advantage - the band seems to have picked the cream of the crop for the set list and there's never a dull moment or a snoozer that one might find in a 3 and a half hour concert that could be on by one of the better known bands of our time. Highlights are abound, and the camera crew does a pretty good job of finding the best moments and exposing them. One particularly impressive moment is when Greg Hoshariah goes on a mighty keyboard rampage in the middle of The Suffocating Silence and there's a perfect shot from directly above his showing the keyboard wizardry in all its glory.

The set is actually a very good one to get familiar with the band. Being that it goes through their entire discography this set is much more interesting than any compilation that could have been released. While the band only plays one song from their self titled debut, Nocturnal, it's pretty easy to see looking at an overview of their discography that their later two albums are much more representative of their sound and they focus their interests there. Bleed Me Dry shows the band in top form as they perform their latest single with a terrific amount of energy to get the show going after the particularly well done opener, Threads, and they never let up from there on in, unless it's just a second of silence to let Ray Alder thank the crowd. The prog fan in all of us will also be interested to know that some of the band's more lengthy songs are also included on the release, including the epic Sapphire, (which Alder introduces by warning the crowd that, ''this is a long one!''), the pounding Memory and the quick building Fall On You.

Of course the dvd would not be complete without some bonus material, now would it? Of course the band adds in a good deal of extras to make for some more good entertainment. This includes the full video for the single Bleed Me Dry, outtakes from the tour and an 11-minute featurette of the boys on the road set to pictures taken by the band and video as well which includes just about everything from the band dressing up as giant ants to invade Dream Theater on stage to lighting each other on fire. Of course this is set to an 11-minute instrumental tune previously unreleased by the band that apparently has no title, but whatever, it rocks.

Combine the fact that the DVD set also includes the CD of the same concert and you've got an excellent collection for anyone who happens to like progressive metal. Fans will be delighted and people who have no idea who Redemption are will finally be able to get a good overview of their discography with some pleasing visuals. This set is going to get 4 out of 5 - excellent stuff!

Kolejna płyta studyjna – więc będzie kolejna trasa. Wkrótce po wydaniu „The Division Bell” Pink Floyd wyruszyli w obejmującą cały świat ogromną trasę koncertową. Podczas (niezwykle widowiskowych) koncertów, oprócz utworów z aktualnie promowanego albumu i (niestety w mniejszości) „A Momentary Lapse Of Reason” grali też, rzecz jasna, sporą porcję klasycznych nagrań; między innymi zdarzało się w drugiej części koncertu zagrać w całości „The Dark Side Of The Moon”. Pierwotnie, jak sami panowie się zarzekali, nie mieli w planie żadnej płyty koncertowej, skoro kilka lat wcześniej ukazał się „Delicate Sound Of Thunder”, potem zespół planował wydać wyłącznie koncertową wersję „Ciemnej Strony”; ostatecznie ukazał się dwupłytowy album live oraz kaseta video (nieco różniące się repertuarem: VHS był zapisem jednego koncertu, na płycie zebrano nagrania z różnych występów). Niektórzy fani Watersa widzieli w tym swoiste odreagowanie: skoro Roger nagrał był koncertową wersję swojego osobistego magnum opus, „The Wall”, to Gilmour i spółka odpowiedzieli koncertową wersją najsłynniejszego dzieła zespołu… Jak dla mnie, to gruba przesada.

Nie ulega natomiast wątpliwości jedno. Wersja wizualna „Pulse” zachwyca do dziś: światła, lasery, filmy, świnie, szklana kula, rozbijający się o scenę samolot, świetne zgranie wszelkich specjalnych efektów z muzyką… Natomiast wersja audio – niestety – nie broni się. Całość wypada dziwnie statycznie. Monotonnie. Poza tym – co w przypadku płyty koncertowej boli szczególnie – całość jest bardzo podobna do wersji studyjnych (głównie dlatego, że muzyka musi pasować do filmów, świateł itp.). Że nagrania z „The Division Bell” na scenie wypadają dobrze? OK, ale np. ja bardzo chętnie zamieniłbym nijakie „Coming Back To Life” choćby na „Yet Another Movie”. A już pominięcie w wersji CD „One Of These Days” (dostępnego w wersji kasetowej i winylowej) na korzyść „Coming...” to gruba przesada. Że na żywo „Learning To Fly” zyskał intrygujące, basowo-perkusyjne otwarcie i zamknięcie, a „Sorrow” codę identyczną do zakończenia? Że w środkowej części „Money” panowie sobie poimprowizowali, pojawił się rytm reggae? Że „Another Brick In The Wall Part Two” i zwłaszcza „Run Like Hell” zagrają bardzo dynamicznie, czadowo? Że na sam początek będzie „Shine On You Crazy Diamond”, a bisy zakończy „Comfortably Numb” i „Run Like Hell”? Wszystko to było już na poprzedniej koncertówce. Właśnie: w sumie nie do końca wiadomo, po co panowie wydawali dwie płyty koncertowe z rzędu, skoro ta nowa nie wnosi nic, czego nie było na „Delicate”. (Prawie nic: panowie odgrzali – żywo, dynamicznie wykonane – „Astronomy Domine”.) I czemu „Pulse” rozwleczono do dwóch i pół godziny: jeśli miała być to ciekawostka dla fanów, wystarczyłaby sama „Ciemna Strona Księżyca” AD 1994. Która również nic nowego specjalnie nie wnosi.

„Delicate Sound Of Thunder” był niezłym dokumentem trasy z roku 1987; a przede wszystkim, był ciekawym uzupełnieniem dyskografii zespołu, ubogiej zwłaszcza w (oficjalne) nagrania live. Natomiast „Pulse” – imponująca w wersji VHS, a zwłaszcza DVD – w wersji wyłącznie audio pozostawia niemiłe wrażenie płyty wydanej głównie po to, żeby wyciągnąć trochę pieniędzy od wiernych fanów. Szkoda.

To potężna, poruszająca i oryginalna grupa muzyków, którzy nie boją się groove'u...
Wspaniały koncert!



With only two studio albums under their belt and a drummer about leave the band Umphrey's McGee filmed two shows outdoors at the Skyline Stage in Chicago. Having a reputation as a jam band, Umphrey's is a band best experienced live. If you live in the continental US, chances are they've been to a venue near you. If not here's one of three opportunities currently available on DVD to see them at home.
The set list actually includes only one song from their first album, which I haven't heard yet, and just two from their second one with two from their first live album. Most of their repertoire could only be experienced live. I count eight tracks here that weren't available anywhere else at the time. I guess practice pays off. For only being together for some four years, they've impressive performers and put on a great show. It's a well-produced DVD. The show was filmed with 18 cameras crew and you get surround sound mixes along with a standard stereo and stereo binaural. The bonus features are fairly forgettable though. Pleasantly surprised to hear a Dixie Dregs like piece by them during the credits (Mullet Over).

Filmed at The Summit in Houston, Texas on November 20, 1975, this DVD captures a typically incendiary live performance by The Who at the start of the US leg of their tour in support of The Who By Numbers album which had been released earlier that year. The original video footage has been cleaned and the sound remixed by longtime Who collaborator Jon Astley but the show still retains a rawness that encapsulates the energy of The Who’s performance.

Emerging from the modern Italian prog scene back in 2009, Il Tempio delle Clessidre initially came together due to the desire of female keyboard player Elisa Montaldo to perform the classic Italian progressive album `Zarathustra' alongside the original vocalist Stefano "Lupo" Galifi. With the addition of more players, writing sessions soon produced an album of original compositions which formed the basis for their self-titled debut release in 2010. To some (myself included), the album was a bit of a modern Italian classic, and as good word of mouth spread, the band were also able to commence live performances. `Live in Seoul' is a two DVD set from Black Widow Records, containing a complete two hour show featuring the band performing the bulk of their debut album, as well as a daring (and risky) interpreatation of a particular work that can only be considered one of the most important and defining vintage Italian progressive albums.
The first disc is devoted to a 2011 performance of the entire Museo Rosenbach classic from 1973 `Zarathustra', however, to call it a `cover version' would be hugely dismissive and somewhat insulting. Instead, the Il Tempio band take the arrangement of the original work and then completely reinvent it. All the familiar themes still show up, but they're woven between new and alternate passages, instrumental improvisations and fresh vocal arrangements. The following fifty minute performance is played with such a wild energy by a group of musicians utterly passionate about the revered vintage RPI work, and it stands completely on its own merits. Compared to the original, the drumming, bass and electric guitars have an added attacking heavy power (some older fans and prog-snobs will likely have a tough time with this part), and plenty of focus is placed on gothic priestess Elisa Montaldo's evocative and dazzling keyboard atmospheres. Stefano "Lupo" Galifi's lead vocals sound just as strong and commanding as they did on the original work, and the thirty-odd years since then have not weakened his voice even slightly. An element that immediately lifts the piece even higher are new duet vocal passages between Stefano and Elisa, and she even takes several solo spots herself, absolutely enchanting and hypnotic.

The second set from the band has them performing most of their debut album, a strongly theatrical performance dominated by dark queen Montaldo, but all the other members charging the material with a wilder force compared to the studio album versions. There's also footage from various progressive music related festivals such as 2 Days and Nearfest Apocalypse, their first live performance in Genova from 2009, various behind the scenes bonuses, reviews and a photo gallery.

Big changes would come for Il Tempio delle Clessidre soon after the Seoul performance. A proper reunion of the original Museo Rosenbach from the Seventies would see Lupo depart to rejoin his old band, resulting in them releasing a new album `Barbarica' in 2013. Il Tempio would (thankfully) carry on with a new vocalist Francesco Ciapica to release `Alienatura' in 2013, an exciting and varied album that proved they were not simply some group of imitators, and it builds even more on the talent that was instantly displayed right from their superb debut album, whilst also allowing them to forge their own identity without relying on high profile connections. But that's the next chapter currently being written...!

Museo Rosenbach and `Zarathustra' fans, please do not be alarmed by the decision of the band to play this beloved vintage Italian release. Personally speaking, `Zarathustra' is one of my absolute favourite RPI albums that I have listened to endlessly over the years, one that I also instantly think of to recommend to listeners wanting to investigate the vintage Italian prog era for the first time. I myself approached this part of the live DVD with apprehension and some suspicion, so to witness Il Telpio delle Clessidre perform it with utmost respect to the original, but also implementing their own skill, passion and clever musical ideas is hugely satisfying and frequently thrilling. I hope diehard Italian prog fans will give it a chance and hopefully be just as won over by it as I was.

Almost four hours of concert footage, powerful live performances from a talented group of charismatic musicians, and a colourful variety of theatrical flair, `Live in Seoul' is an essential live document of Il Tempio delle Clessidre, one of the most exciting and distinctive modern RPI bands, so take the opportunity to allow Lady Elisa Montaldo and her male guard to cast their spell on you.

Awesome! In this new century we have been lucky enough to witness a wave of new and great classic-inspired modern Italian progressive rock bands; the names of Il Bacio della Medusa, Egonon, La Conscienza di Zeno and of course Il Tempio delle Clessidre have been knocking hard in our ear-doors and have entered with solid offerings to this unique musical realm. Me, as an RPI lover am truly enthusiastic regarding these (and others) bands which have released excellent albums and now in this case, DVDs.

Il Tempio delle Clessidre released their first live DVD in 2014 through Black Widow Records, the title is "Live in Seoul" and is a 2-DVD set that shows amazing performances. This band was born thanks to keyboard player Elisa Montaldo whose love for Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra made her start a band in which "Lupo" Galiffi (from Museo) was the main vocalist. Fabio Gremo on bass, Paolo Tixi on drums and Giulio Canepa on guitars complement this 5-piece outstanding band.

Well, though I must be honest, the video quality is not what I would call the best, but after all, it is not that important because the music and the performances are the main elements. The first DVD contains a two-hour concert from Seoul, recorded on October 8th, 2011. It is divided in two acts. The first one is called "Il Museo" and as you can imagine, a full performance of Zarathustra is given, and though the voice is from the original singer and that is a relevant point, the music and the performance are not the same, I mean, it is not a copycat, because Il Tempio introduces different arrangements, figures and performances, they also add some instrumental passages that made the version of their own, so it is Il Tempio's Zarathustra.

It is evident that this new band loves vintage prog and they really enjoy playing it, we can watch how passionate they perform, how they live the music and how they transmit it to the audience, in spite Japanese people do not show their emotions so easily. I remember when I see Museo Rosenbach at Baja Prog 2014, me and other friends were so excited singing, moving our bodies and becoming crazy, because how won't you go crazy with such a powerful music and performance? Elisa Montaldo is a terrific keyboard player, her dress, voice and sensuality adds even more cadence to the already exquisite music, while the other guys are equally important, each one doing their best with their instrument and acting like gods.

The second act is entitled "Il Tempio", and it shows a full performance of their first and self-titled album. So now the vintage becomes new, because they offer first class RPI with an amazing fresh sound that makes us feel alive and kicking. It excites me a lot because I really love Italian prog, so to know there are bands like this one doing extraordinary music is worth getting excited. In this second set there are moments where Lupo does not sing, there are amazing instrumental passages and curious symphonic, dark atmospheres that are wonderfully complemented by some performance details like in "Danza Esoterica di Datura", when Montaldo spread datura (like a perfume) to the audience. Later the musicians go out with masks, so it produces a drama scenario, like being in a literary play. There is an encore at the end, a bit repetitive, but enjoyable anyways, it is called Zarathustra Medley, so go figure.

That concert is just an example of how great this band is and how I would love to see them live sometime soon. The first DVD is enough to spend great time and to buy this release. However, there is also a second DVD! It might be repetitive, but I think it is a great additional feature, because we can see the band in different concerts, from their very first live show in 2009, to the one at NEARFest Apocalypse in 2012. I repeat, talking strictly about video recording, it is not superb, but when you listen to the music and see them performing, wow, you just have to love it.

The legendary German band Einstürzende Neubauten, known since the '80s for their uncompromising approach to music has come up with yet another groundbreaking project far ahead of its times, enabling them to work on their endeavors without needing to bow to the music industry's rules and regulations.

What impact this cheeky use of modern technology has had on the band, their fans and the music industry is portrayed in this documentary Einstürzende Neubauten - On Tour With Neubauten.Org by Danielle De Picciotto. Danielle De Picciotto, an American artist living in Berlin since the fall of the wall, has influenced Berlin's cultural scene since 1985 in many ways as the co-innovator of the Love Parade, the Ocean Club with Gudrun Gut and Kunst oder König, the club-cultural exhibition series presenting Berlin's creative cross-culture internationally.

Also an active member of Berlin's music scene (former singer of the Space Cowboys) she has known Einstürzende Neubauten personally for almost twenty years, following their development with interest. After becoming a member of their new project Neubauten.org, in 2003 she was asked to document the ensuing tour in 2004 by Blixa Bargeld, singer of the band, to provide material for future concert documentaries. Besides filming every show, she interviewed countless "supporters" worldwide, ending up with this documentary -- a courageous example of how following an individual, courageous path can change people's lives worldwide.
