Video recorded on May 12, 2023 at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL and May 13, 2023 at the Des Plaines Theatre in Des Plaines, IL.

Wszystkie utwory to oryginalny materiał grupy Yes. Niech zatem te tytuły pozostaną bez zbytecznego komentarza. Same w sobie są najlepszą recenzją tego wydawnictwa. Jon Anderson od lat mówi, że jest otwarty na reunion ze swoimi byłymi kolegami z Yes. Ale że jego deklaracje nie spotykają się z pozytywną reakcją aktualnego składu zespołu Yes (z przykrością stwierdzam, że coraz mniej w nim muzyków oryginalnie związanych z tą formacją), dlatego nic dziwnego, że w postaci The Band Geeks Jon znalazł sobie idealną platformę do kontynuowania dziedzictwa tego jednego z najznakomitszych przedstawicieli progresywno-rockowego gatunku. Po ubiegłorocznej płycie „True” z oryginalnymi piosenkami i premierowym repertuarem teraz trafia nam w ręce koncertowy przegląd klasyków grupy Yes. I co z tego, że Rob Kipp nie jest Rickiem Wakemanem, Chris Clark nie gra jak Tony Kaye, a Richie Castellano to nie Steve Howe, skoro już sekcja rytmiczna w osobach Andy Graziano (bg, g) i Andy Ascolese (dr) wydają się idealnymi spadkobiercami nieżyjących już niestety Chrisa Squire’a i Alana White’a. Ale to przede wszystkim śpiew 79-letniego (w chwili nagrania tego koncertu) Jona Andersona, acz utrzymany w nieco niższych tonacjach niż przed laty, nadal lśni, zachwyca i wywołuje najszlachetniejsze emocje…

Gdyby ktoś tutaj postawił pytanie: czy głos Andersona wytrzymuje próbę czasu? Moja odpowiedź brzmi: zdecydowanie TAK. YES! (gra słów zamierzona – przyp AC.) Głos Jona nadal unosi się strzeliście i wysoko. Ponadto pięciu z sześciu towarzyszących mu na scenie muzyków dostarcza wielopiętrowe wokale wspierające, ale nie jako podpórki (jak było to np. na ostatnim tournée Genesis), ale jako harmoniczne chórki. Klasyczny repertuar grupy Yes już tak ma, że jak nie ma Andersona, to czegoś brakuje. Ale jak jest Anderson, to nie brakuje niczego…

Po wysłuchaniu tego materiału oraz po obejrzeniu filmowego zapisu koncertu zauważyłem, że celem muzyków zgromadzonych na scenie Arcada Theater wcale nie było „odkrywanie” klasyków Yes na nowo. Zamiast tego przekonałem się jak dobrze i wiernie, wręcz bezbłędnie, zespół The Band Geeks potrafi na żywo grać utwory z katalogu Yes. Aranżacje pozostają te same, instrumentacje podobna jak w klasycznym Yesie, a Jon, jak to Jon, to mistrz nad mistrze, pomimo naprawdę sędziwego już wieku... Razem przywracają ogień klasycznym utworom grupy Yes.

Wydawnictwo „Live Perpetual Change” dostępne jest jako pakiet dwóch płyt CD/DVD, a także na potrójnym winylu. Jego premiera zbiega się z wiosennym tournée zespołu po Stanach Zjednoczonych, na którym, zgodnie z tytułem trasy: „Yes Epics Classics And More”, wykonywany będzie klasyczny repertuar grupy Yes. Oj, chciałoby się, żeby przyjechali z tymi koncertami do Polski...

Iva Bittova jest gwarancją wykwintnych, niepowtarzalnych muzycznych doświadczeń. Niezależnie od tego, czy to, co się wyłoni, jest wzniosłe czy zmysłowe, ziemskie czy erotyczne, nie tylko słyszysz jej muzykę, doświadczasz jej.
Jednak bez względu na to, jak odurzające może być 'doświadczenie audio', jeśli znasz jej muzykę, pozostajesz świadomy, że słuch jest tylko jednym z sześciu zmysłów. Aby w pełni doświadczyć Bittovej, ten istotny element wizualny również musi zostać wchłonięty.

Jak sugeruje tytuł tego wydawnictwa, ujawnia ono wiele stron jej ciągle zmieniającego się charakteru muzycznego.


DVD jest podzielone na trzy części. Pierwsza to wyjątkowy, dziewięćdziesięciominutowy koncert z nowojorskim zespołem muzyki współczesnej Bang On A Can All-Stars. Koncert został nagrany w Pałacu Akropolis w Pradze 26 marca 2006 roku. Repertuar koncertu pochodzi z albumu studyjnego Elida Ivy Bittovej, nagranego w Nowym Jorku, który zyskał ogólne uznanie i aprobatę krytyków.

Ta płyta DVD jest doskonałym przykładem hipnotyzującej atmosfery, którą potrafi stworzyć i wyczarować, niezależnie od tego, czy jest sama na scenie, czy w doborowym towarzystwie nowojorskich BOAC All-Stars, gdy stają się, jak gdyby, jej orkiestrą.

Linie fortepianu mieszają się ze smyczkami, podczas gdy improwizacja klarnetu łączy się z wściekłym hałasem gitary elektrycznej. Rezultatem jest muzyka, która jest jednocześnie wyrafinowana i bezpośrednia, bezkompromisowa, ostra i nostalgiczna. Łączy wschodnioeuropejską muzykę klasyczną i zwyczaje ludowe, podczas gdy nietradycyjne połączenie partii wokalnych Ivy Bittovej i fortepianu tworzy inspirujące melodie. Nagranie koncertu zostało wyreżyserowane przez jedną ze wschodzących gwiazd Czech, Jakuba Koháka. Po raz kolejny udało mu się uszlachetnić efekt, wyprowadzając produkcję z gatunku zbyt często sterylnego nagrywania koncertów, stając na wysokości zadania i uchwycając niepowtarzalną symbiozę akcji wizualnej i dźwiękowej oraz atmosferę, której świadkami byli uczestnicy koncertu w sali Palace Akropolis.

Whatever one might say of COLLAGE, there is little denying that they energized the Polish and international prog scene in the mid 1990s with their "Moonshine" album, the booming over reverbed echo of which we can still hear a quarter century later. I'll go further by reaching back before COLLAGE to say that, while they were certainly influenced by the MARILLION axis in addition to the classics from the 1970s, they actually co-opted the neo bands' strengths and magnified them, while dispensing with the froth. True they replaced it with their own overwrought take but at least they knew how to concoct a memorable melody that you might hum all the way home and still remember the next day, and the day after that, or 25 years later.
"Moonshine" apparently came together in some magical way that no band members can really explain, and was a decade in the making. While touring to promote the album, they had been a support gig for bands like FISH and SHADOWLAND, but when the latter stood arms folded backstage after a COLLAGE set, forced to choose between humiliating themselves onstage or offstage, it was clear COLLAGE had attained headline status. The "Living in the Moonlight" DVD chronicles the group transitions and much much more, in 240 minutes which, while not all required viewing, represent a momentous slice of the all too short but savory COLLAGE history.

The main event is a television concert recorded in April 1996, featuring two tracks from their debut "Basnie", one from their John Lennon tribute album, one from the "new" disc at the time, "Safe", and EVERYTHING from "Moonshine". The band is largely able to reproduce their massive studio sound on the stage, though some of the fat is naturally melted off. The main players from a visual perspective are vocalist/acoustic guitarist Robert Amirian with his massive locks that had been catapulted from 1974 time capsule just in time for the show; guitarist Mirek Gil with his expressive Fripp meets Hackett lines; and Wojtek Szadkowski's manic expressive drumming. Of course, with COLLAGE the keys confer a spacey ambiance throughout.

The "Basnie" material in Polish suffers from being various lineups removed from its origins, and they failed to make a convincing case for the length of "In Your Eyes" yet again, but the rest is just wow, in particular the pop-prog title cut; the sweepingly epic "Wings in the Night", which is probably the greatest song from the extended COLLAGE-SATELLITE-BELIEVE family; the menacing "Moonshine"; and the folky "War is Over".

One flaw in the TV performance is the almost total absence of an audience dynamic, but, if that's what you want, the bonus bootleg quality concert from a year earlier might deliver, though I find the crowd chatter and poor quality far more distracting. Still, it was available so why not? More valuable is the set of traditional music videos of 4 tracks, in particular "Midnight Flyer" from several years before with a prior vocalist and more harmonies than you would ever expect based on the concert footage. It's surprisingly fresh and comes off like a sneer-less QUEEN. Finally, several interviews with the three most prominent members are offered, recorded in either the late 1990s or early 2000s, after the band essentially broke up but presumably before SATELLITE had been formed. Priceless anecdotes are shared generously, a few of which I have touched upon earlier. They are in Polish with English subtitles.

This is as comprehensive an audio visual document of these legends as one could hope to find, and is recommended for fans of COLLAGE, neo prog, or those fascinated by the intersection of creativity and chemistry and its miraculous repercussions, particularly in prog. This will help you forget that you started watching in mid afternoon and were lying in the moonlight long before the final credits rolled.

Nigdy jakimś wielkim fanem i znawcą power metalu nie byłem, choć klasyka obca mi nie jest. Mam jednak od kilku lat swojego faworyta w tej muzycznej szufladzie - niemiecką formację Masterplan. Czym wkupiła się w me łaski ta utworzona przez byłych członków Helloween - Rolanda Grapowa i Ulricha Kuscha – grupa? No… wiadomo. Zatrudniła przy mikrofonie Jorna Lande, który choć dziś nie jest już członkiem grupy, to śpiewał w niej na trzech albumach.

Na tej ich pierwszej koncertówce Jorna już nie ma, jest to jednak rzecz, która może absolutnie zadowolić wielbicieli tego muzyka i jego związków z Masterplan. Dlaczego? A choćby dlatego, że zastępujący za mikrofonem Jorna Rick Altzi mocno stylizuje się na słynnego Norwega. Nie ma może takich możliwości wokalnych, jednak jego specyficzna chrypka delikatnie wpada w Jornowskie klimaty. Ponadto repertuar – choć przekrojowy – zdominowany jest przez rzeczy nagrane kiedyś przez Jorna.

Podstawowym daniem na Keep Your Dream Alive jest nieco ponad godzinny koncert zarejestrowany podczas słynnego czeskiego festiwalu Masters Of Rock w 2013 roku. Dominują hiciory z jedynki zatytułowanej Masterplan, których jest aż siedem na czternaście zagranych numerów! Pozostałe cztery albumy studyjne mają - poza MKII, reprezentowanym tylko przez Lost and Gone – po dwóch reprezentantów. Tracklista jest doprawdy wyborna – to praktycznie ich Greatest Hits z Enlighten Me, Spirit Never Die, Crystal Night, czy Soulburn na czele. A pojawia się jeszcze świetna ballada Back For My Life. Kapela jest w formie, a energii dodaje jej spora scena i ogromna publiczność reagująca żywiołowo.

To oczywiście nie wszystkie atrakcje dysku DVD, bowiem w dodatkach otrzymujemy fragmenty występów zespołu z Wacken Open Air w 2014 roku, festiwalu Prog Power w Atlancie oraz – co jest największą ciekawostką – z Midi Festival w… chińskim Szanghaju. Obraz zaangażowanych emocjonalnie w koncert niemieckiego bandu Chińczyków jest doprawdy bezcenny. Całość uzupełniają oficjalne teledyski grupy. Dokładnie pięć, po jednym z każdego krążka. Fajne jest to, że choć wielkiego szału w nich nie ma (no może poza Back For My Life) i śledzimy głównie grających muzyków, to jednak mamy pełen przegląd zmian personalnych w grupie na przestrzeni lat.

Obowiązkowa rzecz dla fanów Masterplan, do tego tradycyjnie już, jak na nich, gustownie wydana i z dodatkową płytką CD do samochodu. Bo ich melodyjne galopady same czasami dociskają pedał gazu...

Live @ l'Abeille rôde is a live document of one of the most original but still underrated progressive bands. The French band makes an unique kind of progressive rock. The intensity of the music reminds me often of that other French band ... Ange. The band has developed an unique sound in the progscene. When Claude Leonetti in 1996 had a motorbike accident it deprived him to use his left arm. Missing his guitar he developed a new kind of instrument and called it the Léode. The instrument is a mix of guitar, a synthesizer and a musical saw. The Léode controls a sampler and multi-effects by a MIDI system. A kind of guitar-synthesizer without strings and a unique sound.

This CD/DVD documents a December 12, 2001 live performance at San Francisco's Warfield Theater, which reunited Hicks with virtually every musician he has ever recorded with. The occasion was Dan's 60th Birthday Bash, a once-in-a-lifetime gala.
Over 40 remarkable players are featured, including all surviving members of Hicks' pioneering San Francisco band, the Charlatans - George Hunter, Richard Olsen and Mike Wilhelm - as well as former Hot Licks Sid Page, Jon Weber, Jaime Leopold, Maryann Price, and Naomi Ruth Eisenburg - who hadn't played together publicly in over twenty years.

Great music, great viewing, and a must-have for every Dan-fan!
