Sigh. Another worthwhile Riot (V) release, another one with zero reviews so far on the Archives. What does this legendary band have to do to finally get the recognition they deserve? Their nearly flawless discography certainly cannot be the reason they continue to be overlooked by large parts of the metal community. Even their less stellar albums, such as Through the Storm or Army of One, are still pretty solid and their best material is good enough to rival that of metal’s biggest names. In a better world, Riot would be mentioned in the same breath as legendary acts like Priest or Maiden. Well, maybe not Maiden, but when comparing Riot’s output to that of most of the metal greats, it can definitely hold its own.

It is, however, nice to see that Riot are finally backed by a big enough record company that would provide the resources to make a release like Live in Japan 2018 even possible. After all, it’s been high time the band finally got to put out their first official, full-fledged double live album. Of course there’s some older, more obscure stuff such as Riot Live (1989), Riot in Japan – Live!! (1992) or Shine On (1998), but Live in Japan considerably ups the ante, featuring roughly 112 minutes of music on two discs, a concert film of the entire set on Blu-ray and a decent booklet with photos and liner notes.

As always, evaluating the quality of a live release comes down to three main factors: (a) the set list or songs featured, (b) the band’s on-stage performance and (c) the sound or production values. Live in Japan is a winner in all three categories.

As to the sound quality, it’s a lot better than your average bootleg yet still raw enough to give it that authentic live feel. You can tell there wasn’t a lot of subsequent overdubbing being done in the studio, so this clearly isn’t one of those “Unleashed in the Studio” affairs. (Priest’s Unleashed in the East is of course an undisputed live classic, it just isn’t as much of a true live recording as the name suggests.) That being said, Live in Japan has easily enough oomph to seriously annoy the neighbors, so there really isn’t much to complain.

The band’s performance is excellent and very energetic. You can tell the guys are having a splendid time playing in front of some of their most dedicated fans, as Riot have always been very popular in the land of the rising sun. The absolute star of the show is singer Todd Michael Hall, who pulls out all the stops and delivers Riot’s demanding material almost flawlessly. His voice is soaring to amazing heights as he nails even the most difficult passages, of which there are plenty, especially during the Thundersteel part of the set. Riot have had a couple of different vocalists over the course of their long career and all of them were fantastic in their own right, but Hall may well be the best of them all. At the very least he’s right up there with the amazing Tony Moore, who graced the band’s groundbreaking Thundersteel album.

Another reason why Live in Japan is a great success is that it comprises an entire live set recorded in one single location. The song selection is brilliant, with disc one dedicated chiefly to the band’s more recent output. There’s a lot of stuff taken from their latest studio full-lengths, Unleash the Fire and Armor of Light, with the band’s heartfelt ode to their loyal Japanese fans, “Land of the Rising Sun,” as an inevitable inclusion. Moreover, there are great live versions of two tracks taken from The Privilege of Power, namely “On Your Knees” and “Metal Soldiers.” The former sounds noticeably different from the studio version as that one was among the Privilege of Power cuts to feature a horn section, which is omitted on the live version.

Since the band’s 2018 tour commemorated the 30-year anniversary of the release of Thundersteel (1988), disc two features a live rendition of the entire (!) Thundersteel record, as well as a few classic encores: the high-octane “Road Racin',” “Swords and Tequila” and “Warrior,” which traditionally concludes Riot’s live sets. It really is a treat to hear live versions of Thundersteel tracks that have seldom or maybe never been played in concert before, such as the scorching “Run for Your Life,” the epic “Buried Alive (Tell Tale Heart)” or power ballad extraordinaire “Bloodstreets.” Now, with a catalog as voluminous as Riot’s, there are bound to be some regrettable omissions. For instance, it would have been nice to hear a song from the Rhett Forrester period (“Born in America,” perhaps?) and maybe a couple more tunes from the Mike DiMeo period, even if the speedy “Angel Eyes” made it onto the album. And where in blazes is “Heart of a Lion,” perhaps the best track on Armor of Light? Alas, you simply cannot have it all.

On a side note, it’s pretty neat there are no drum or guitar solos and interaction with the audience is reduced to a minimum; other than Hall briefly announcing the ensuing track and politely saying “dōmo arigatō” after the track is finished, Riot let the music do the talking. They also refrain from interrupting any of the songs to exchange a few “whoa-oh-ohs” with the audience, which might be fun for concert goers but is always rather annoying when listening to a live record. No complaints there.

Live in Japan 2018 is the definitive Riot live album and a must-have for any Riot fan. On top of that, it would also be a great opportunity and starting point for the uninitiated to finally discover one of the very best power/speed/heavy metal bands of all time.

Whether or not this late-night Prom would have taken place had it not been for the untimely death of David Bowie seven months ago, the opportunity to reposition arguably Britain’s greatest post-war songwriter as an icon of ‘contemporary classical’ music was too good to pass over.

Featuring a notable line-up of singers plus an international roster of arrangers, this project was curated by André de Ridder – his highly versatile s t a r g a z e ensemble providing musical continuity across a range of not necessarily familiar songs from the Bowie songbook.

With its array of strings, winds and tuned percussion, s t a r g a z e made for an admirable backing band for all that many of the arrangements fell into that post-minimalist lingua franca that has straitjacketed mainstream classical composing this past quarter-century. How else to explain the lethargy of ‘Warszawa’ which launched the evening, and while Neil Hannon had the Bowie idiom off to a tee, his lacklustre rendering of ‘Station to Station’ hardly galvanised proceedings any more then Conor O’Brien’s reverential take on ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ (a cameo from Lulu was sorely needed).

Hannon’s poised world-weariness in ‘This Is Not America’ (a jewel buried in the soundtrack to a mediocre 1980s’ film) marginally upped the ante – despite the dutiful rapping of Elf Kid – while Marc Almond emoted enthusiastically in ‘Life On Mars’, but it was Anna Calvi who injected much needed dynamism with her darkly ominous take on ‘Lady Grinning Soul’. Paul Buchanan made his first appearance with a wistful run-through of ‘Ashes To Ashes’, while Laura Mvula caught the aggression but not always the irony of ‘Fame’.

The latter two singers then kicked off a trilogy from Bowie’s swansong Blackstar, ‘Girl Loves Me’ as responsive to their confiding interplay as ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’ to Buchanan’s soulful rendering – though Calvi and the currently much-vaunted Amanda Palmer were rather outfaced by a seismic organ contribution in the epic title track. Palmer’s take on ‘Heroes’ was little more than stylish karaoke, whereas Philippe Jaroussky brought an ethereal eloquence to ‘Always Crashing In The Same Car’ as jarred inevitably with Almond’s take on ‘Starman’ – for all that the latter’s unbounded enthusiasm audibly won over the audience.

It remained for a fetchingly attired John Cale to provide the evening’s highpoint – first with his smouldering ‘Valentine’s Day’, then alongside Calvi for a surging rendition of ‘Sorrow’ (a Bowie ‘Pin-Ups’ cover of the 1960s’ band The Merseys), and finally in tandem with the House Gospel Choir for a surprisingly though persuasively elegiac take on ‘Space Oddity’. After which, a rendering of ‘After All’ featuring most of those present sounded an unwitting note of post-Brexit gloom.

Opinions as to the success of this venture will doubtless centre on whether the Bowie canon should be reappraised in this fashion. If the response is yes, then the evening represented a thought-provoking yet only partially successful step along a lengthy and unpredictable road. Not that André de Ridder or s t a r g a z e could be found wanting for their commitment, which was no less evident in an incisive arrangement of ‘Let’s Dance’ to send people home in suitably upbeat mood. Wherever he may be, the man himself would surely have grinned his approval.

Reed zebrał kilku zaprzyjaźnionych muzyków (m.in. swoich kolegów z Magenty: Chrisa Fry’a i Christinę Booth), zaprosił na widownię swoich przyjaciół i w bardzo kameralnych warunkach słynnego Real World Studios 8 października ubiegłego roku dał jednorazowy koncert, w trakcie którego wykonał na żywo swoje wielkie muzyczne dzieło prawie w całości.

Już wyjaśniam dlaczego ‘prawie’. Otóż, drugą część części pierwszej suity „Sanctuary” Reed zagrał tylko w krótkim, czterominutowym fragmencie, będącym w istocie wokalnym popisem Angharad Brinn wykonującej niezwykłej urody wokalizę. Wszystko to po to, by na płycie CD zrobić miejsce utworowi „Willow’s Song”, który pierwotnie ukazał się dwa lata temu na EP-ce pod tym samym tytułem, a teraz zamieszczony został jako uzupełnienie koncertu wypełnionego muzyką z obu płyt „Sanctuary”.

Kilkunastoosobowa orkiestra pod przewodnictwem Roba Reeda wykonała w Real World Studios kawał solidnej roboty oddając w sposób selektywny ducha obu studyjnych płyt. Reed i spółka udowodnili, że na scenę da się przenieść wszelkie elektroniczne niuanse znane z wersji studyjnych. Zrobili to w sposób niezwykle przekonywujący, co sprawia, że tego niecodziennego koncertu słucha się doprawdy znakomicie. Zresztą dobra muzyka, a taką niewątpliwie jest cykl „Sanctuary”, broni się zawsze i w każdych warunkach.

Inna rzecz, że w tym miejscu musi pojawić się pytanie: ile można muzycznie eksploatować ten sam cykl? Czy zatem Rob Reed w przyszłości zaskoczy nas czymś nowym czy też powinniśmy się spodziewać ciągu dalszego w postaci „Sanctuary III”?

Following on from the success of the two 'Sanctuary' albums, a decision was made to bring a band together to perform both albums in their entirety and to record that for posterity. The event took place on October 8th 2016 at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, and it was then released as a CD/DVD set. There was no way that Rob could provide all the instrumentation, so brought in friends to help out, including Chris Fry, Martin Shellard, Dan Nelson, Jiffy Griffiths, Tim Lewis, Nigel Hopkins, Simon Brittlebank, Angharad Brinn, Christina Booth, Fran Murphy, Lorraine King and Ffion Wilkins. Now, this is music to be taken in and enjoyed, so although there is audience noise between the songs, everyone is calm and collected during the performances themselves. That everyone does a great job, nailing all their parts so that it comes across as very close to the original studio versions comes as no surprise, so it only leads to the question "so what was the point?".
But, the point of this was showing that music isn't just a studio creation but can be taken out and performed. True, that does mean having quite a few guitarists all playing at the same time at certain points, but I don't really have a problem with it when the music is as solid and strong as it is here. Oldfield also has to surround himself with musicians when he tours just because there are so many layers, and that same is true with Rob Reed. That he isn't spoken about in the same context apart from those in the know is nothing short of sacrilege, as I have enjoyed this and Robert's other albums just as much, if not more, than many of those by Oldfield. Plus any album that has Christina singing on it will always be something to relish. Yet another truly glorious album from the Welshman.

Between the Buried and Me’s 8th studio album, Coma Ecliptic, is also its most diverse and cinematic album to date, offering a mix of the group’s earlier aggressive style and newer, more melodic songwriting. The result is a breathtaking piece of art that also lends itself brilliantly to live performances. While the band had taken entire albums on the road before, in fact performing Colors in its entirety the very first day that album was released, with Coma the band would wait until much later in the tour cycle. One of those shows is commemorated here on the Coma Ecliptic Live CD/DVD/Blur-Ray set. Filmed live on location October 4th, 2016 at The Observatory North Park in San Diego, CA, the set is the entire Coma Ecliptic album performed live at the peak of the band’s ability, with audio and visuals that are as captivating as the music itself.

The film centers around the mesmerizing performance by vocalist Tommy Rogers, who trades off between keyboard playing singer and powerhouse metal frontman. Strategically placed go-pros and professional cameras overlook each member of the band from more than a dozen angles, allowing the viewer to get an up close view, as well as a straight forward crowd perspective. The music is mixed to keep out much of the crowd noise, and at times can sound a little too much you are listening to the studio album, but nontheless, this is a great album’s worth of music that any BTBAM fan will treasure.

For any fan not familiar with their work and thinking it might not be their thing, Coma Ecliptic is the album to check out. So get the studio album first and then watch this live dvd. You’ll be hooked from there.

Dissection have been pioneers in their own sense on the black metal scene. This DVD is a lasting, fitting and benevolent tribute to the late Jon Nödtveidt of this highly underrated Black metal outfit. The sound quality and picture clarity is eloquent and the manner, in which the members of Dissection go about doing what they do best, is remarkable. ‘Night’s Blood,’ is the first full length track of the DVD and starts kicks of an epic journey into the most well documented concert featuring Jon Nödtveidt.

Of course, the highlight of this DVD is waiting in anticipation for ‘No Dreams Breed In Breathless Sleep’ which is followed immediately by ‘Where Dead Angels Lie.’ Without doubt, ‘Where Dead Angels Lie’ is the best song written by Dissection and perhaps the best song ever written in the history of black metal. Melodic, melancholic and hauntingly beautiful, it epitomizes everything that black metal should be. The track ‘Soulreaper,’ comes before ‘No Dreams Breed In Breathless Sleep.’ And as ‘No Dreams Breed In Breathless Sleep’ is played, all the band members stand behind a curtain of smoke, waiting for their cue to play the epic ‘Where Dead Angels Lie.’ When the song starts, the reception it gets is excellent, as Jon doesn’t announce the name of the song but the Dissection faithful know which track it is. As the song is belted out, Tomas Asklund’s surgeon-like precision drumming holds the song together and what is remarkable is that Tomas Asklund plays with quiet efficiency He seems to know exactly what he’s doing and seems extremely chilled out at the task he’s performing.

The guitar and bass work is up to the mark and with excellent sound production and re-mastering and is as crisp as a pack of freshly opened crackers. ‘Thorns Of Crimson Death’ and ‘The Somberlain’ are two exceptional songs that sound phenomenal when played live and seeing that these two tracks were constantly on their set list, it was no wonder to see them pull it of so flawlessly. The other songs on this DVD are played with timely proficiency and skill, but without a doubt, the most awe-inspiring moment is watching ‘Where Dead Angels Lie’ being played by Jon.

R.I.P. Jon Nödtveidt. You will always be remembered.

Niezwykle bogaty w wydawnictwa Neala Morse'a jest mijający rok. Artysta wydał wszak album Sola Gratia, materiał zatytułowany Hope And A Future, wraz z Portnoyem i Georgem pochwalił się trzecią odsłoną cyklu Cover To Cover a 4 grudnia wypuścił kolejne w swojej dyskografii wypasione wydawnictwo koncertowe Jesus Christ The Exorcist - Live At Morsefest 2018.

Rzecz wpisuje się w wydawane niemalże regularnie rejestracje koncertów organizowanych podczas cyklicznej imprezy Morsefest. 15 września 2018 roku w Cross Plains w Tennessee artysta zdecydował się zagrać po raz pierwszy w całości na żywo progresywno rockowy musical Jesus Christ The Exorcist. Tę niemalże rockową operę Morse stworzył już w 2009 roku jednak dopiero dziesięć lat później znalazła się ona na dwupłytowym studyjnym wydawnictwie. Ciekawostką jest zatem to, że tak naprawdę koncertowa wersja Jesus Christ The Exorcist jest pod względem rejestracji wcześniejsza, choć wydana już po albumie studyjnym.

Tematycznie Jesus Christ The Exorcist jest po prostu opowieścią o życiu Jezusa a poszczególne kompozycje odnoszą się do słynnych wątków znanych z Nowego Testamentu. Dwugodzinny koncert w kościele New Life Fellowship jest zatem przede wszystkim swoistym religijnym misterium. Widać to po pełnych emocji i wzruszeń zachowaniach Neal'a Morse'a ale także towarzyszących mu artystów. Pomijając jednak te religijne wątki dostajemy przygotowany z dużym rozmachem rockowy spektakl. Czegóż my tu nie mamy?! Chór, kwartet smyczkowy, sekcję waltornii, mnóstwo wokalistów otwarzających poszczególne role a nawet dwie tancerki (w tej roli córka i synowa Morse'a). Trzon zespołu stanowią stali współpracownicy Morse'a z jego zespołu: Bill Hubauer, Randy George oraz Eric Gilette. Co ciekawe, ten znany z The Neal Morse Band gitarzysta gra tutaj na perkusji (!) godnie zastępując Mike'a Portnoya. Z kolei obowiązki gitarzysty przejął świetnie się prezentujący Paul Bielatowicz.

Ten koncert pokazuje z nieco innej strony samego Morse'a. Bo choć tradycyjnie znajduje się on w centrum sceny za klawiszowym zestawem, to jednak nie odgrywa głównej roli. Tylko chwilami jest głównym wokalistą, tym razem przede wszystkim, oprócz gry na instrumentach, dyryguje (dosłownie!) wydarzeniami na scenie. Bardzo dobrze w tytułowej roli Jezusa pokazuje się Ted Leonard (Spock's Beard, Enchant), przekonujący jako Judasz jest Nick D'Virgilio, najwięcej jednak ciepła i takiego duchowego uroku wnosi delikatna Talon David w roli Marii Magdaleny.

Pod względem muzycznym to kolejny przemyślany w szczegółach przez Morse'a koncept, pełen aranżacyjnego bogactwa, zmian nastrojów i wzruszających melodii. W przeciwieństwie do dzieł sygnowanych nazwą The Neal Morse Band to rzecz nieco mniej rockowa, bardziej symfoniczna i gospelowa. Momentów jest tu mnóstwo, choćby przepiękne Free At Last, przejmujące The Greatest Love Of All albo wzniosłe Love Has Called My Name. Z drugiej strony trudno pominąć zaskakujące The Madman Of The Gadarenes okraszone popisem kilku wokalistów śpiewających unisono.

Całość zgrabnie sfilmowano (na oświetlonej ciekawie scenie, za którą umieszczono ekran z wyświetlanymi wszystkimi tekstami, obserwujemy precyzyjnie wszystkich wykonawców) i obdarzono dobrym brzmieniem. Jako bonus dostajemy godzinny dokument Jesus Christ The Exorcist: Behind The Curtain z wypowiedzimi muzyków oraz przebitakami z prób przed spektaklem. Do pudełka Blu-ray dodano książeczkę z bogatym wyborem zdjęć z koncertu. Wartościowe wydawnictwo.

Niezmordowany Neal Morse powraca ze swoim nowym setem koncertowym pt. „Jesus Christ The Exorcist (Live At Morsefest 2018)”. Jak sugeruje tytuł, ten nowy album CD (oraz - a jakże! - DVD i Blu-ray) został zarejestrowany na dorocznym festiwalu Morsefest w 2018 roku, podczas którego Neal i towarzyszący mu artyści wykonali w całości program albumu „Jesus Christ The Exorcist”, notabene na około pół roku przed jego oficjalną sklepową premierą. O studyjnej edycji płyty „Jesus Christ The Exorcist”, o jej religijnym kontekście i o długiej drodze do jej wydania pisaliśmy w naszej małoleksykonowej recenzji, którą można znaleźć pod tym linkiem.

Jak pamiętamy, album przedstawia artystyczną wizję dotyczącą życia Chrystusa włożoną w ramy progrockowego musicalu. Chyba po raz pierwszy w przypadku swoich solowych przedsięwzięć Morse pozostał nieco w cieniu, zachowując dla siebie raczej rolę dyrektora muzycznego (a także gitarzysty i keyboardzisty oraz odtwórcy trzech pomniejszych ról (Piłata, Demona oraz Ucznia)), a nie głównego wykonawcy. W zespole towarzyszącym mu na scenie znaleźć można oczywiście jego stałych współpracowników (zwycięskiego składu się nie zmienia!), jak Bill Hubauer, Randy George i Eric Gillette (to gitarzysta, który dla potrzeb tego projektu zasiadł za zestawem perkusyjnym!). Obowiązki gitarzysty przejął Paul Bielatowicz, a oprócz rockowych instrumentów mamy tu jeszcze prawdziwą orkiestrę: sekcję waltorniową, duży chór, chórki oraz kwartet smyczkowy. Inscenizacja i oświetlenie są imponujące, a wizualizacja i projekcje autorstwa Christiana Riosa oraz dźwięk zrealizowany przez Jerry'ego Guidroza (Sons of Apollo, Neal Morse Band, Haken) robią różnicę w stosunku do studyjnej wersji.

Główną rolę Jezusa Chrystusa odtwarza Ted Leonard z grupy Enchant (a także z zespołu Spock’s Beard, z którego wywodzi się autor całego przedsięwzięcia). Ten wybór to prawdziwy strzał w dziesiątkę, bo to jeden z najlepszych głosów w amerykańskim rocku, co zresztą udowodnił w trakcie niniejszego koncertu. Leonardowi towarzyszy plejada wspaniałych wokalistów, wśród których można znaleźć samych dobrych znajomych, m.in.: Nicka D'Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), Jake’a Livgrena (Protokaw), Matta Smitha (Theocracy), Johna Schlitta (Petra), Ricka Floriana (White Heart), Julie Harrison, Marka Pogue i syna Neala, Wila Morse’a. Jednak osobą, która wszystkim im skradła show, jest debiutująca w tak dużym scenicznym przedsięwzięciu, Talon David, która wcieliła się w rolę Marii Magdaleny. Ma ona nieprzeciętny i unikatowy głos i wie jak go używać, co – jak to widać w ruchomych obrazkach zarejestrowanych podczas tego występu – u niejednego widza wywołało łezkę wzruszenia, jak choćby podczas finałowego duetu „The Greatest Love Of All” zaśpiewanego z Tedem Leonardem. Innymi punktami kulminacyjnymi, na które warto zwrócić uwagę, są piosenki w trakcie których Morse i spółka przedstawiają porywające zabawy wielopiętrowymi harmonicznymi głosami z wyraźnymi wpływami grupy Gentle Giant, kiedy to wielu wokalistów śpiewa jednocześnie różne melodie bezbłędnie rozpisane na wielogłosy. Takie popisy to prawdziwy konik Neala Morse’a i, jak pamiętam, po podobne rozwiązania sięga on począwszy od swojej pierwszej oficjalnej płyty nagranej ćwierć wieku temu jeszcze z grupą Spock’s Beard.

Potężne, pełne rozmachu aranżacje, porywające wykonania, epicki rozmach, sceniczny profesjonalizm i ani jednej fałszywej nuty, ani jednej wpadki, a poziom wykonawczy najwyższy, jaki można sobie wyobrazić i wymarzyć. Nie sposób nie być pod wrażeniem tego spektaklu. Na tę bezbłędnie funkcjonującą sceniczną machinę złożyło się wiele elementów. Mocne kompozycje to pierwsza sprawa. Bezbłędne rozpisanie ról i doborowa obsada – to zaleta numer dwa. Najwyższy poziom wykonawców (zarówno wokalistów, jak i instrumentalistów) – to trzy. Lecz to, co Neal Morse ze swoimi współpracownikami wyprodukował przy stosunkowo niewielkim budżecie, mocno ograniczonym czasie i przy niewielu próbach, jest po prostu zadziwiające. Taka muzyka i tego rodzaju sceniczne przedstawienia są prawdziwą solą epickiego prog rocka i jestem pewien, że niniejsze wydawnictwo z pewnością zachwyci każdego fana twórczości Neala Morse'a.

Normally the more I play an album the more I enjoy it, but now I look back at my review of the studio version, I cannot believe I gave it 4*’s. That feeling has definitely come through onto the live version as well, as while the performance from all those involved is wonderful, the complete set is just way too clunky, with the story being shoehorned into the music, none of which have stand out tunes. This was an experiment for Neal, in that he plays the part of composer and musical director and only gives himself a few small roles to play. The lead role of Jesus was taken by Ted Leonard (Enchant, Spock’s Beard) and he was joined by Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), Jake Livgren (Protokaw), Matt Smith (Theocracy), John Schlitt (Petra), Rick Florian (White Heart), Mark Pogue, Wil Morse and Talon David. I remember when my sister started getting heavily into Christian music some 30 years ago, she used to play Petra all the time, one of the greatest proponents of that style of music.

I am not sure if it is my own personal religious beliefs have changed dramatically over the years, or whether it is down to Morse providing music which is far more theatrical and less of the style I associate with him, but very little on this album works for me. When I hear a Neal Morse album I really do want to hear the complexity and style I expect which he first cemented in Spock’s Beard and then took into much of his solo work. Unlike ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, this really does have an air of being preached at, in a very American style. Everyone provides a great performance, with his normal guitarist Eric Gillette showing he is one of those guys who can seemingly do anything as he is the drummer on this performance, while bassist Randy George has been at the top of the game forever. This is an album which will be appreciated far more by Christians than progheads, while the subset of that venn diagram will have a blast. I can appreciate it, but that is way different from actually enjoying it.

Nie będę zbyt szeroko wracał do zamierzchłej przeszłości, dodam tylko, że artyści w swojej bogatej dyskografii mają już kilka koncertowych wydawnictw z obrazkami, jednak głównie były to rzeczy o fanklubowym lub bootlegowym charakterze, a zapisany w łódzkiej Wytwórni, w 2008 roku, Reality Dream nie spełnił oczekiwań zespołu. Dlatego też warszawski kwartet postanowił wreszcie nagrać występ, który pokazałby ich od najlepszej strony – koncertowej, która jest swoistym DNA (wiem, lepiej napisać ID.Entity) formacji.

Moment wydawał się idealny. Zespół był po wydaniu świetnego pod względem artystycznym, ale i niezwykle nośnego, ID.Entity. Do tego występ rejestrowany był 1 czerwca ubiegłego roku na warszawskim Torwarze i był ostatnim koncertem promującym album. Grupa była zatem kapitalnie zżyta z materiałem i najpewniej nie musiała się stresować większymi, czy mniejszymi potknięciami. I to wszystko było widać i słychać (miałem przyjemność uczestniczyć w tym wydarzenie). Dostrzec to można także i na Live ID.

Nie będę ukrywał, że materiał robi na odbiorcy ogromne wrażenie i grupa autentycznie może być zadowolona z ostatecznego efektu. Zacznijmy od doboru kompozycji, który pokazuje tak naprawdę dużą różnorodność ich muzyki. Od ciężkich, wielowątkowych kompozycji o progresywno-metalowym szlifie, po piękne balladowanie, albo wreszcie zwięzłe, rozpędzone i ultraprzebojowe hity. Dominują tu oczywiście kompozycje z promowanego ID.Entity, z którego nie usłyszymy tylko I'm Done With You. Ponadto, z ADHD i Love, Fear and the Time Machine mamy po dwie kompozycje [odpowiednio Egoist Hedonist i Left Out oraz #Addicted i Lost (Why Should I Be Frightened By a Hat?) ]. Muzycy nie zapomnieli o obowiązkowych Panic Room i Conceiving You. Cieszy to, że słuchacz otrzymuje przy tej okazji utwory często zmodyfikowane, inaczej zaaranżowane, np. z dodanym wstępem. No i jest mnóstwo czysto muzycznych „momentów”, jak miażdżąco wciągający słuchacza, transowy ogon w Big Tech Brother, cudownie i energetycznie rozpoczynające koncert #Addicted, szaleńcze i luzackie Friend or Foe, skąpane w konfetti Self-Aware, czy wreszcie zamykające koncert Conceiving You, w którym zespół po raz pierwszy oficjalnie zapisał „cichy krzyk”. Przyznam, że najlepiej bawiłem się tym pomysłem, gdy słyszałem go premierowo, na zupełnie innym koncercie, jednak i ta jego wersja jest mega fajna, żartobliwa, a już finałowy krzyk naprawdę rozsadza głośniki.

Za co warto jeszcze docenić to wydawnictwo? Za – nie boję się tego napisać – bardzo dobre brzmienie. Co prawda, oglądałem i słuchałem materiału li tylko w miksie stereo (na płycie Blu-ray dostępny jest jeszcze 5.1), to i tak soczyście, selektywnie i przestrzennie brzmi tu każdy instrument, a już mięsiste figury basowe Mariusza Dudy czasami wkręcają w fotel. Niezwykle precyzyjnie jest to także zmontowane. Grupa nie bawiła się tu w jakieś koncertowe animacje w tle, zatem nie mamy ich także tutaj. Wystarczają ekspansywne, ekstremalnie bogate, wręcz barokowe, w swoich kolorach i rozwiązaniach, światła. Zaimponować mogą głównie te ujęcia z tyłu sali, pokazujące scenę z dalszej perspektywy. Do tego, zmontowano to wszystko adekwatnie do wydarzeń scenicznych. Zatem gdy obcujemy ze spokojniejszą materią, ujęcia są dłuższe, a gdy grupa uderza w ciężkie klimaty (np. Egoist Hedonist) kadry stają się krótkie, nerwowe i dynamiczne. A gdy Maciej Meller zaczyna grać tak charakterystyczną dla Panic Room gitarową formę w tle, kamera jest już przy jego gryfie. Obowiązkowo też zobaczymy „strzelanie palcami” w publiczność, „robienie oczek” i taniec Travolty z Pulp Fiction w wykonaniu Łapaja. Ten ostatni zresztą dużymi fragmentami kradnie show swoimi szaleństwami za klawiaturą.

No i jeszcze rzecz kluczowa, która – jestem przekonany – nie wyszła tu przypadkowo. Publiczność, której jest tu dużo i do tego pokazywana jest fantastycznie! I nie chodzi tu tylko o pierwsze rzędy, ale i o plany całej sali, jak i zatrzymywanie się przy konkretnych twarzach. Jest czasami na nich śpiew, zaduma, ale głównie entuzjazm i zachwyt. Miał rację lider zespołu mówiąc do zebranych, żeby się ładnie uśmiechali, bo mogą pojawić się w nagraniu. I z pewnością wielu znalazło tu siebie. Mówił też artysta o publiczności, jako o piątym członku zespołu. Ten zapis perfekcyjnie to oddaje.

Do dania głównego dodano 15-minutowy film Behind The Scenes Documentary pokazujący próby przed koncertem, przygotowania do niego już na sali oraz krótkie spotkanie muzyków tuż po koncercie z fanami. Można tam zobaczyć między innymi Piotra Kozieradzkiego w przesympatycznym kaszkiecie na głowie, odchodzącym nieco od jego scenicznego emploi (chyba w stylu Aberdeen). Jak zdradził mi muzyk tuż po koncercie, dostał go w prezencie od swojej mamy. Nie tylko wszak dla takich ciekawostek polecam państwu ID.Live. Bo to kawał koncertówki przez ogromne „K”.

Rory's Rockpalast
The enduring friendship between Rory and the good people of WDR's Rockpalast is finally all contained in one box. the Rockpalast stages (be they indoor or outdoor) always provided a great platform for Rory and his band to perform on, always delivering the goods. The ambience backstage at Rockpalast nights also brought out the camaraderie in the musicians appearing on the shows. This would inevitably lead to a unique 'jam session' and thankfully some of these have been captured for posterity.

Film Franka Zappy, składający się z zapisu koncertu zespołu Zappy w nowojorskim Palladium Theater w 1977 roku, z okazji Halloween.
Wybryki członków zespołu zarówno na scenie, jak i za kulisami przeplatają się z sekwencjami zrobionymi metodą animacji poklatkowej.



The concert film from my favorite era of Frank Zappa's career is definitely a spectacle of the eyes and ears. With precision versions of some of Zappa's best material, some trippy claymation sequences and some all around nonsense, this movie is easily one of the best concert films available. From the introduction rehearsal of Baby Snakes to the exciting Camarillo Brillo/Muffin Man medley, there is gold dispersed throughout this monumental spectacle.
Shot during a Halloween stint in New York, and with plenty of new material to play, Frank Zappa wows the audience with sheer audacity and musicality. From the soaring Adrian Belew vocals of City of Tiny Lites (which includes a monster Frank Zappa solo) to the "adorable" Terry Bozzio performance of Punky's Whips (again with another great Frank Zappa solo), the concert portions of this film are flawless. My only real complaint is that the claymation scenes tend to go on and on and do the same thing over and over again (which is shapeshifting objects and psychedelic sounds). With fan interviews dispersed around, some wacky Roy Estrada backstage scenes, and some band member interviews in between, every aspect of the Zappa live show was included flawlessly.

By far the best songs are Titties 'N Beer, Punky's Whips, Broken Hearts are for Assholes, and the Camarillo Brillo/Muffin medley. Three of these songs feature Terry Bozzio on vocals, one as a love-struck man confused with his sexuality, one as a very discerned devil, and the last as an overly agressive screamer. In any sense, these songs are excellent representations of their studio counterparts (apart from Titties 'N Beer and Punky's Whips, which were never released as studio tracks). The line-up of Adrian Belew (later of King Crimson fame), Patrick O'Hearn, Terry Bozzio, Tommy Mars, Pete Wolf, and FZ himself are cohesive and play the material flawlessly.

Overall, there is much to like about this film, if you can get past the overly boring claymation sequences. I cannot fault this film except for that, which is only about 20 minutes of an almost 3 hour movie. For Frank Zappa fans, this is a must own. But let it be known, this will be an excellent collection into any prog fans collection. But read the subtitle before making any moves, "A movie about people who do stuff that is not normal".
