Dziwny zespół to całe Pain of Salvation. Niby wtłoczeni w progmetalową szufladkę. Prawie, jak progmetal, ale jak wiadomo…Nie, stop! Wróć!

Ciężko jest przeciętnemu człowiekowi i konsumentowi płyt zrozumieć Daniela Gildenlöwa (zwanego pieszczotliwie Boskim). Szaleniec czy poeta? Filozof czy grafoman? Muzyk czy performer i aktor? Geniusz czy szarlatan? Pytania bez rozstrzygnięcia i wiążącej odpowiedzi. Co osoba, to inna interpretacja. Stąd też chyba cała twórczość Boskiego jest rozumiana rozmaicie. I chyba dobrze. Podoba mi się ta polaryzacja poglądów. Od podejścia „niemalże na klęczkach”, poprzez zainteresowanie i docenienie, aż po totalne zniesmaczenie i niezrozumienie. Fajnie...
Album BE z 2004 roku – podzielił fanów zespołu, jak i pozostałych zwolenników tzw. rocka progresywnego. A to wylewano wiadro pomyj, a to wzdychano pod niebiosa. Pisząca te słowa po kilku latach dojrzała do odczytania BE na nowo. Przedarłam się przez przypisy, odnośniki, komentarze Boskiego (sporo tego): filozofia, nauki przyrodnicze, literatura, malarstwo, symbolika, ikonografia i Da Vinci Code. Cóż...mam skłonność do oczytanych, przystojnych chłopaków po 30-tce. Mrrr....

W 2005 roku wytwórnia InsideOut dała zespołowi zielone światło na wydanie, co by tu nie powiedzieć kolejnej z fanaberii Boskiego – koncertu na DVD. I nie byłoby w tym nic dziwnego (przecież każdy szanujący się zespół wydaje DVD), gdyby nie fakt, że ta oryginalna produkcja sceniczna po prostu przebija produkty konkurencji.

Publiczność: gimnazjaliści + nauczyciele. Tak, mili Państwo – materiał zarejestrowany na potrzeby DVD został nagrany w obecności uczniów szkół z Eskilstuny. Ciekawostka, prawda? Materiał z BE grany był dwa razy w ciągu wieczora, przez 7 dni. Dwa ostatnie koncerty zostały zarejestrowane.

To bardzo teatralne szoł z ciekawym montażem, momentami w slow motion, efektami, filmami, przebierankami, symboliką koloru. Daniel kilkukrotnie zmienia odzież wierzchnią: a to pojawia się ubrany w długą, białą powłóczystą szatę, stylowy garnitur, skórzany płaszcz etc. Reszta zespołu i rzecz jasna orkiestra również się dostosowali. Makijaże i stroje miały symbolizować 4 żywioły: wodę, powietrze, ogień, ziemię.* Co do wartości estetycznej strojów i makijażu, cóż de gustibus...Ciekawie została również zaaranżowana przestrzeń sceny (basen z wodą, do którego co jakiś czas wstępował Daniel) oraz światła (w przeważającej ilości niebieskie – podkreślające mistyczność wydarzenia).

Wracając do materiału muzycznego. Zmiany w stosunku do studyjnej wersji BE – niewielkie, ale zawsze. Sceniczna prezentacja materiału z BE jest nieco krótsza w porównaniu z wersją studyjną. Brzmi to wszystko znakomicie, bardzo dobrze. Cały zespół gra bez zarzutu. Wiele ciepłych słów można powiedzieć także o członkach Orchestra of Eternity. Jakaś niesamowita symbioza panuje miedzy muzykami POS a orkiestrą. Materiał piekielnie trudny i skomplikowany zagrany został przez OoE porywająco. Należy zwrócić jeszcze uwagę, że muzykom obydwu formacji nie towarzyszy dyrygent, a w takim przypadku „ryzyko wpadki” jest spore. Orkiestracje są moim zdaniem lepsze, niż na studyjnej wersji dzieła i to właśnie dzięki nim, niektóre utwory zabrzmiały znacznie lepiej niż w oryginale. Pluvius Aestivus w koncertowej wersji jest tak subtelny i piękny, że aż ciarki przechodzą. Fredrik Hermansson to znakomity pianista i kompozytor. Podobnie jak Lilium Cruentus z cudowną partią graną na oboju. A opus magnum dzieła są zdecydowanie Iter Impius (cudowne solo na wiolonczeli - łzy w oczach) i Martius/Nauticus II – które zagrane zostały w sposób mistrzowski. Czapki z głów. Co może dziwić, wg mnie Dea Pecuniae wypadła nieco bezbarwnie w tym zestawieniu. Za to Diffidentia – znakomicie. Zresztą, jak to w przypadku concept albumów bywa – należy ich słuchać w całości. Skojarzenia? Na pewno z The Song Remains The Same Led Zeppelin. Podobny ładunek emocji i pomysł . Znakomicie się to ogląda i szkoda, że koncert trwa tylko godzinę. Ale zawsze można wrócić do koncertu i obejrzeć następny raz. I kolejny. I raz jeszcze....

Muzycznie i koncepcyjnie: majstersztyk. Można Boskiego lubić bądź nie, ale moim zdaniem z tą nietypową sceniczną produkcją powinien zapoznać się każdy, nawet ten, kto PoS notorycznie nie cierpi i nie lubi fanów zespołu (a znamy kilku, prawda?)

Zasadnicza część DVD za nami. Pozostały jeszcze dodatki. Uff – sporo tego. Znakomite fotografie zespołu autorstwa Larsa Ardarve.Mamy jeszcze dodatkowo komentarz odautorski (Daniel & Johan Hallgren), zabawny wątek poszukiwania treści satanistycznych w BE (Religious Fanatic Track), filmiki, ukryte menu, automatyczną sekretarkę pana boga i co tam chcecie.

Ale to jeszcze nie koniec. Dodatkowo do dysku DVD dołożona została wersja CD z prezentowanym materiałem. Kto nie lubi oglądać obrazków, zawsze może posłuchać.

Znakomite wydawnictwo: słownie dziewiątka.

* Spośród czterech żywiołów ogień i powietrze to aktywne zasady męskie, a ziemia i woda to pasywne zasady żeńskie. Z czterema żywiołami kojarzone są cztery fazy życia człowieka: dzieciństwo, młodość, wiek dojrzały, starość.

Depicting the existence and substance of God and His creations and interpreting it in musical lyrics and notes must be extremely difficult for even gifted musicians. Hence, describing the existence and substance of God and His creations in a cohesive 75 minute musical drama, especially in the progressive rock corridor, appears to be a "mission impossible". Against all odds, Daniel Gildenlöw, the lyricist, chief composer, guitarist, and lead vocalist of Pain of Salvation (PoS), a Swedish progressive metal band, was able to do it brilliantly and elegantly in 2004!

Thanks to Gatot "Top Markotop" Widayanto, who has been kind in re-lending me his PoS BE DVD and patiently encouraged me to review my thought after I returning his DVD back to him for the first time, I am finally able to appreciate the album. For me, the PoS BE (the band's fifth) album is probably one of the most complicated art works to be decrypted. Such difficult, that I need to download a sizeable information from the internet on the album before hearing it for the second time. This is because the strength and uniqueness of the PoS BE album does not lie on its musical notes and beats, but it is on its musical lyrics, story plot, and concept. Hence, it is imperative that you understand the background of characters displayed in the drama, read the lyrics contained in the DVD booklet during the play, and watch it in a proper DVD Dolby Surround 4:1 mode. I am afraid that you won't be able to fully extract Mr. Gildenlöw's message by playing his brilliant and complicated work in the CD 2-channel system mode.

There are five characters, appearing and disappearing in this musical drama. The first is called Animae, representing the God. The second is Imago, which is the image of humanity in its most natural form. The third is Mr. Money, the dark side of Imago who like to be immortal. The fourth is Dea Pecuniae, the feminine version of Mr. Money and the Eve of humanity's dark side. Finally, Nauticus, the most intelligent creature ever created by Animae, which are drifting and hovering in the space and searching for answers to save Earth. In my interpretation, I also see Nauticus as the most powerful substance of the dark side of Imago, regretting and wanting to rectify his mistakes.

The album is opened up by 1:48" sub 500Hz beat, gradually rising in tempo, depicting the birth of Animae, called Animae Partus. God, in Daniel's definition, must have heart beats and, therefore, he displays these sounds as his prologue. "Who I am? In the back of my awareness I find words: I will call myself. God", narrated Mr. Gildenlöw's. Then, having had an orchestra introduction, you'll hear somewhat mellow metal riffs, called Deus Nova. In this 3:18" piece, Daniel depicts a situation where the world created by Animae has been becoming bigger (he narrates a rising number of population, in-line with the function of time), but it has also been becoming vulnerable.

Using a beautiful combination of mandolin, flute, and piano as an introduction, Mr. Gildenlöw takes us to the next 5:11" piece, titled Imago, describing how Animae teaches Imago the beauty of his creations (presumably in the Heaven). "Teach me of the forest, teach me of the sea, teach me anything as long as you teach me.", Imago begs to Animae. Johan Langell's percussion at the back induces a somewhat Middle East color into the composition. It is followed by Fredrik Hermansson's 5:00" beautifully crafted classical piano, combined with violin and viola, in Pluvius Aestivus. In this mellow instrumental composition, it appears to me that Daniel attempts to depict how satisfy Animae is following the creation of Imago. Note that rather than relying on Kristoffer Gildenlöw's electric bass, Daniel relies on cello to create softer, but clear beats.

The slow rock melody guitar opens up the 5:28" piece, called Lilium Cruentus, describing how Imago losses his innocence and struggles to recover his strength. Imago's confusion on his life is depicted by metal beats and riffs in this section. "They tell me you are better off where you are now, I don't care.", the evil presumably whispers to Imago. "I need something to blame for this pain.", Imago attempts to find a scapegoat for all suffers he experienced in this current life.

Suddenly, your TV screen turns into black and you'll only see a candle and its light. An eerie sound humming: "Oh Lord, Oh Lord, won't you hear a sinner prayer.", while a mellow melody guitar played at the back Imago is obviously asking Animae whether he could be forgiven for his sins in the 4:58" Nauticus. Lars Lundin and Alfred Magnusson's diagonal recording technique (portraying the hum on the front right and back left speakers at the same time and vice versa) further dramatizes the ambiance. The candle light almost turns off at the end of the piece when the eerie narration saying "Save me, I'm drifting. Help me, I'm drifting", symbolizing Imago's diminishing hope.

As Animae doesn't answer Imago's call, it appears to me that he becomes disappointed and broken. Putting forward his angers by unveiling his dark side is essentially Mr. Gildenlöw's message in the next somewhat blues 10:09" composition, called Dea Pecuniae. As I mentioned in the beginning, Imago's dark side is reflected by two characters-Mr. Money and Dea Pecuniae. Materialism and desire on power are some of Imago's dark sides. "If you are looking for fulfillment, a Kingdom and a Crown, a Paradise of Free rides, I am here to let you down." teased Dea Pecuniae to Mr. Money.

The next 4:15" section, called Vocari Dei or Messages to God is the album's trademark. Here, Daniel sets up a phone line for fans from around the world to ring and leave their messages to God. These messages were collated and presented with a peaceful instrumental accompaniment, resulting in what I think the most touching track in the album. "God, if you love us, why we are subject to an increasing injustice through out the world. Do you show your love by tormenting us? It doesn't make any sense", said one of desperate fans, similar to Imago's sober feeling.

Accentuating by the Vocardi Dei fragment, Animae finally takes Imago's call. Starting with staccato and heavy rock riffs, Mr. Gildenlöw depicts a somewhat unfriendly exchange of words between Animae and Imago in his 7:25" Diffenditia piece. "God, you know, you created a golden cage for your sheep, a stage too wide and deep for us to even see the play.", said Imago. "Man is shattered, I am shattered. My shards have become shards of their own, pieces of pieces, impossible to put back together, they leave me, they do nothing more than spending their lives seeking a context they were already part of, until there is no alternative", Animae complains.

Believing that his creation will never gained back his innocence, Animae regrets and curses himself in the 6:21" and 2:27" grief turned into metal rock composition, named Nihil Mohari and Latericius Valete, respectively. "Nothing will ever change, touch me, heal me. Mankind remains the same. Forests, oceans, bleeding. Nothing will ever change.", Animae cries.

Meanwhile, broken and angry Imago, who lost the guidance, is looking for another more powerful and higher substance as his new master. Setting on the back of classical and church music background, Imago turns to Nauticus, who is actually his most powerful dark side, in the 2:37" Omni section. "We all need something to believe in. I see us in you Nauticus. Will you go, travel on, serving our fragile race? Will you come back to us with the meaning of life?" said Imago to Nauticus. On your TV screen, you could watch Daniel pulls off his jacket, washes it in a small pond in front of the stage, and wears his wet jacket, symbolizing that Imago has cleaned its past and found a new master. What a great stage act!!!

Using a rock opera music as an entry, Mr. Gildenlöw describes how Imago's dark side runs amok without control in the 6:21" Iter Impius. Here, Mr. Money (one of two Imago dark sides) says: "I woke up today expecting to find all that I sought, and climb the mountain of the life I bought. Finally, I'm at the top of every hierarchy, unfortunately there is no one left.but me. I'm on my own, I am all alone, I am on my own. I'm stuck forever here. Already cold, so cold. I rule the ruins". Imago has been becoming so powerful and successful, but yet he feels alone and empty.

The emptiness felt by Imago is further emphasized by the 6:41" Maritus/Nauticus II. Opened up by slow tempo and gradually rising, Nauticus declares: "I'm at the line, I see it all. I am Nauticus and I'm so much more. I am everything". Imago's dark side has possessed everything-"I am every forest, I am every tree, I am every ocean, I am every sea". He becomes so powerful and even promotes himself to be the new Animae by saying: "And if you listen closely you might hear whisperings in the silence of darkness, beautiful, yet distinguishable and beautifully clear. You might hear the only answer "BE", "BE", "BE". The piece is ended by Daniel's solo percussion, a great way to end this beautiful and complex art work!

Before ending my review on the album, let me quote Mr. Gildenlöw's answer when he was asked about God (please see http://www.alternative-zine.com/interviews/en/41 ): "I always had a very complicated relationship to the concept of God, because, I mean, God is constantly present in this world weather you believe in him or her or not, you will be aware of the existence and the concept of God in human existence, I've never been able to believe in any of the Gods as presented in any human religion so far, I've always hoped for God, I always wished for God but I never manage to believe and have full faith in the concept of God, especially after working with this concept, I have come and more to the conclusion that the question weather there is a God or not does not apply to our fractal system and is like when this two dimensional guys are looking at the cylinder asking themselves if there's a round shape or a square shape and there is no answer, because you cannot ask that question, because it's beyond our fractal".

Enjoy this piece of beautiful and complex art work with open mind and you will appreciate how genius Daniel Gildenlöw is.

'Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory' Dream Theater , 'Live On The Edge Of Forever' Symphony X , 'Spirit Of Live' Vanden Plas , 'BE' Pain Of Salvation i 'One Cold Winter's Night' Kamelot , a teraz 'Mind Full Circle: Live From Center Stage' Pagan's Mind. SZTUKA!



It’s a bit odd, but I’ve never felt that Norwegian progressive metallers Pagan’s Mind have ever gotten as much attention as they deserve. They’re as equally good as the bands they’re compared to, like Dream Theater, Symphony X and Circus Maximus; plus they have their own unique approach to the genre that has always made them stand out from the rest of the pack. If you’ve ever heard Celestial Entrance or God’s Equation, then you know very well what I’m talking about. Speaking of Celestial Entrance, that’s one record that you’ll be hearing in it’s entirety here in this crowdfunded DVD/BD/CD set which was originally recorded last year during Center Stage. But that’s not all you get, as a bonus disc illustrates even more of the band’s very best tunes like “Engimatic Mission”, “Eyes Of Fire”, “God’s Equation” and of course the majestic instrumental performance of “Full Circle.” But while all of this might sound well and good, let’s break it down a little bit and get into the reviewing part of this observation. When I’m approached with a live performance, the first thing I expect is quality. I literally expect the recording to sound just as it would if I was standing in the front row, right next to the speakers. I expect the vocals to carry out through the audience and all of the instruments to have an audible clarity. Being that this is a live performance, it should sound even better than and be performed with a greater sense of conviction than on the albums themselves. While I understand that my demands for such a performance might be exponentially high, it pleases me very much when they are met and even exceeded in some cases.

It is not surprising to me at all when I find that Full Circle has done exactly that, checking off nearly every single box on my list for a stage performance that one would want to own and treasure for the rest of their lives. Celestial Entrance is the band’s sophomore debut, but is regarded as the band’s best, especially by Metal Archives which gave the album a ninety-three percentile ranking out of one hundred (Based on six reviews.) In any case, this is just the album that the band decided to cover and they’ve done it justice. My biggest worry on this record was “is Nils Rue’s vocal performance going to sound as good live as it does on the records?” which was quelled almost immediately after hearing not but a few minutes of the album’s opener “Through Osiris’ Eyes” which blew my expectations away. For those of you who thought he used some sort of vocal programs to make his voice sound so great, that’s a complete load of hooey as I’m experiencing the real deal live on the stage and can confirm that Rue sounds just as fantastic here as one virtually any of the band’s landmark albums. But not only that, he also gets the harsh vocal sections of Celestial Entrance right as the band work to deliver a powerful display of skill that will certainly help to remind you that you are indeed listening to the same Pagan’s Mind who wrote that album over a decade ago. In other words, they’ve still got it and it shows remarkably. For a progressive metal band, the keyboards are always important as are the clean leads which are both offered with supreme clarity and a big budget production that sounds as good as anything you’ll buy live from Dream Theater and finally gives these Norwegians a chance to shine. They prove their worth instrumentally with “Back To The Magic Of Childhood Alone” which makes the awesomeness of the “Full Circle” instrumental an added topping to the cake. I love a record when I can discern every tap of the drum kit, every single lead and bass riff, every keyboard note and every vocal octave that escapes from the frontman’s mouth, which is what I am definitely getting here. You paid for high quality and you’re getting exactly that. Right now I’m playing this through my Skullcandy tuned Laptop speakers, (which sound pretty damn incredible despite their size) but if you can get this release onto a full surround sound system and with an added flatscreen display of the performance, it’s truly going to sound like you’re there… and trust me folks, you want to be there.

There’s literally no use in describing just how great the band are and writing a diatribe explaining how skilled and talented they are, because that’s foolish. Any Pagan’s Mind fan is fully aware of how magnificent these guys are and how they’ve got one of the best damn vocalists in all of progressive metal fronting them. But if you’ve never heard Pagan’s Mind before, you’ll definitely want to pick up this live set as it shows the act performing what is arguably their best recording with as much compassion and coviction as featured on the original disc, as well as some newer cuts. David Bowie’s “Hallo Spaceboy” was also covered here as well, so you’ll definitely want to check that one out. Though what I’ve described as mere icing to the cake in “Full Circle” is considered the standpoint of the record, and from my understanding; it does not exist in any other recorded form as of yet. As for what to expect from such a piece, it will most certainly delight progressive metal fans who have come to expect a certain quality when it comes to overly large and bombastic instrumentals such as this. It reminds me of Dream Theater’s great instrumental pieces, which I’ve always come to admire and will surely sound much better in this live setting than it will on the disc itself. Such a piece was made for an audience and you can’t help but notice the silence of the crowd at this moment, when everyone just seems to be caught in a wave of absolute mesmerism due the sheer incredibility of such an incredible piece of music that would even make the classical composers of metal’s ancestry smile with delight. I feel it is here, on such a profund note as this that I shall wrap up this observation as I once again stress that a sound of such class and precision is indeed proof that heavy metal music can be some of the most intelligent music in the world and considering the nature of most popular artists and quick hooks, it very much is. I could only imagine what such a performance looks like on paper and it’s a sheer wonder that these men can even pull it off. It makes me wonder as to what alien beings would think of our compositions, our art and expression put into such a brillaintly mastered form as I’m bare witness to here. Suffice it to say, Full Circle is definielty one of the best live progressive metal performances that I’ve literally ever heard and captures the genre in it’s purest, most unadulterated form. If you can’t attend a ProgPower festival or just wanted to take one home with you, then you certainly can’t go wrong with this exquisite piece of music and art.

Każdy, kto choć raz słyszał jakiś koncert Def Leppard, wie doskonale, skąd wziął się przydługawy tytuł najnowszego koncertowego wydawnictwa grupy. Tymi słowami Joe Elliott żegna publiczność w każdym mieście, dziękując za gościnę oraz obiecując powrót i to, że nie zapomną zgromadzonych danego dnia fanów. Until next time and there will be a next time… don’t forget us and we won’t forget you. Każdy fan Def Leppard zna to na pamięć. Każdy fan Def Leppard zna też na pamięć koncertową setlistę zespołu, bo ta jest nudna jak większość polskiego prog rocka. Od lat obowiązkowo wszystkie hity z Hysterii, większość z Pyromanii, ze 2 kawałki z pierwszych płyt na odczepnego, Let’s Get Rocked, bo to ostatni gigantyczny przebój oraz ze dwa czy trzy numery z ostatniej płyty studyjnej. Wyłamali się podczas Viva! Hysteria, kiedy wystąpili jako własny support, grając mnóstwo numerów, których nie wykonywali od lat (nawet stronę B jednego z pierwszych singli, która nawet nie wyszła na żadnej płycie!). Teraz jednak wszystko wróciło do normy. Set znowu jest przewidywalny jak sraczka po mleku z ogórkami kiszonymi, a polotu w tym wszystkim tyle, co w mielonym z ziemniakami.

O poszczególnych utworach nie będę pisał, bo jeśli słyszeliście którąkolwiek płytę studyjną lub koncertową Def Leppard, to wiecie dokładnie, co usłyszycie. Bardzo staram się znaleźć jakieś pozytywy tego wydawnictwa, ale idzie mi kiepsko. To znaczy, żeby nie było wątpliwości – wygląda to wszystko niezwykle efektownie (aż za efektownie…), brzmi też całkiem dobrze. No to czego się pan czepiasz? Pretensje do Def Leppard o setlistę koncertową są już tak nudne, że aż głupio to powtarzać. Ale przyjrzyjmy się zestawowi zaprezentowanemu w Detroit. Trzy kawałki z ostatniej płyty – przyzwoicie. I to by było prawie na tyle, jeśli chodzi o utwory nagrane później niż w 87 roku, z wyjątkiem granego zawsze Let’s Get Rocked, czyli wielkiego przeboju z rocku 1992, oraz Rock On – coveru sprzed ponad dekady. Tak, dobrze widzicie. 12 z 17 kompozycji na tej koncertówce to utwory przynajmniej 30-letnie, a z okresu 1993-2014 mamy jeden utwór, w dodatku cover. Na miejscu Viviana Campbella miałbym już dawno dość, bo jego 25-letnia już obecność w zespole sprowadza się tu do wspomnianego coveru i 3 nowych numerów, na których zresztą być może nie grał, bo w trakcie nagrywania ostatniej płyty odwiedzał głównie szpitale, a nie studio nagraniowe (dobrze, że tu chociaż wszystko idzie chyba ku lepszemu). Sprawa numer dwa to absolutnie nieżywa amerykańska publiczność. Ja wiem, że na Def Leppard przychodzi obecnie dość specyficzny typ słuchaczy, ale naprawdę można było nagrać to DVD gdzieś, gdzie ludzie choćby sprawiają wrażenie zainteresowanych. Sprawa kolejna – te same numery na kolejnych trasach i koncertówkach (z chlubnym wyjątkiem setu Ded Flatbird na Viva! Hysteria) byłyby może łatwiejsze do przełknięcia, gdyby pojawiały się w nich jakiekolwiek nowe elementy, tymczasem w zasadzie jedyną zmianą w ostatnich latach jest to, że Bringin’ on the Heartbreak czasem jest grane w wersji elektrycznej, zbliżonej do płytowej, a czasem w akustycznej.

I kwestia ostatnia, ale zdecydowanie najsmutniejsza. Nie wiem kogo oni chcą oszukać, ale trzeba być ślepym i głuchym oraz ignorować pewne oczywistości, żeby wierzyć, że większość (na wszelki wypadek nie napiszę, że wszystkie) wokali Joego Elliotta zostało wyśpiewanych tamtego dnia na żywo na scenie w Detroit. Sorry, panowie. Widziałem filmiki z zeszłorocznej trasy. Def Leppard zawsze chwalili się tym, że żaden wokal nie leci nigdy z taśmy. Do 2016 roku pewnie tak było. Na YouTube można znaleźć wystarczająco dużo dowodów na to, że w 2016 roku przynajmniej w niektórych numerach jechali bezczelnie na ścieżkach wokalnych z Viva! Hysteria i Mirror Ball. Tu słychać dokładnie to samo (porównajcie sobie choćby wspomniane już Bringin’ on the Heartbreak z Detroit i z Viva! Hysteria). To, że Joe miał olbrzymie kłopoty z głosem od stycznia zeszłego roku i niesławnego rejsu, który zakończył się katastrofą na tak wielu poziomach, że aż przykro pisać, nie jest żadną tajemnicą. Próba zagrania zaplanowanych na zimę koncertów skończyła się po jednym występie, podczas którego zespół musiał wspierać wokalista supportu. Resztę odwołano, ale kiedy grupa wróciła w maju, Joe nagle brzmiał dużo lepiej… kiedy „śpiewał”, bo nie kiedy mówił między utworami. Do tego dziwne trzymanie mikrofonu, żeby zakryć usta podczas śpiewania (nigdy tego nie robił), naliczanie każdego utworu przez perkusistę (do tej pory miało to miejsce tylko w kilku przypadkach), brak wtrącenia nazwy miasta, gdzie odbywa się koncert, w tekście Rock of Ages (tradycja od zawsze) i ogólne stronienie wokalisty od wybierania się na wybieg, bliżej fanów… Naprawdę mam wyjaśniać? Trudno, zdarza się. Głos poszedł w cholerę, a ponowne odwołanie całej trasy pewnie kosztowałoby fortunę (to i tak były już koncerty przełożone z zimy), ale naprawdę trzeba było z tego cyrku na kółkach wydawać koncertówkę? Nie można było poczekać do 2017 roku i sprawdzić, czy może wokalista nie będzie w lepszej formie? Tym bardziej, że na styczniowych koncertach pamięci Bowiego Elliott na pewno śpiewał na żywo i nie było słychać, żeby miał jakieś kłopoty, choć i nie wkładał w te wykonania na pewno wiele mocy.

Po co wyszła ta płyta? Nie znajduję sensownej odpowiedzi, poza tą oczywistą – dla kasy. Choć jest to o tyle dziwne, że przecież nawet takie zespoły jak Def Leppard nie zarabiają już w zasadzie nic na płytach. Przez wiele lat fani nie mogli się doczekać koncertówki z prawdziwego zdarzenia. Było prehistoryczne video z końcówki lat 80. (z materiałem nigdy nie wydanym na CD), były dodatki koncertowe do limitowanych edycji i wznowień płyt, ale nowych albumów koncertowych nie było. Wszystko zmieniło się w ostatnich latach – dostaliśmy przyzwoite Mirror Ball i bardzo udane przedstawienie Viva! Hysteria (oba poskładane z wielu koncertów), a teraz And There Will Be a Next Time... Teoretycznie nic tylko się cieszyć, ale czy naprawdę potrzebowaliśmy tak szybko tej koncertówki, skoro ewidentnie nie było warunków, żeby nagrać to uczciwie i dobrze? Naprawdę nie można było poczekać do 2017 roku i spróbować to nagrać jak trzeba? Jeśli chcecie posłuchać po prostu dobrej muzyki w niezłych wykonaniach i nie wnikać w szczegóły, to polecam ten album, bo tego naprawdę słucha się całkiem dobrze, a przecież mamy do czynienia ze znakomitymi muzykami. Ale jeśli nie lubicie być robieni w… no w to, w co większość ludzi nie lubi być robiona… to dajcie sobie spokój z tym albumem, bo autentyczności w tym tyle, co w Jaka to melodia?

Pamięci Pawła Bergera – część koncertu Dżemu wydana jako album w 2007 roku.
Jest on poświęcony zmarłemu w wypadku samochodowym Pawłowi Bergerowi,
pianiście oraz współzałożycielowi i kompozytorowi grupy.

Koncert odbył się w Zabrzu 27 stycznia 2006 w Domu Muzyki i Tańca.
Wzięli w nim udział przyjaciele i byli współpracownicy zespołu.
Instrumentaliści: Wojciech Karolak, bracia Józef i Jan Skrzek, Rafał Rękosiewicz, Krzysztof Głuch, przy klawiszach zasiadł aktualny wokalista zespołu Maciej Balcar.

Symfonicznie – album koncertowy grupy Lady Pank z towarzystwem Orkiestry Symfoników Gdańskich.
Wydany w 2012 roku z okazji trzydziestolecia zespołu.

Utwory były rejestrowane podczas koncertów grupy w katowickim spodku i warszawskiej Sali Kongresowej, z udziałem Orkiestry Symfoników Gdańskich pod dyrekcją Andrzeja Szczypiorskiego.
Pomysł płyty zrodził się w 2008 roku – wówczas Lady Pank pierwszy raz zagrał z Orkiestrą Symfoników Gdańskich, w ramach Gdańskiego Widowiska Nocy Świętojańskiej.
Aranżacje utworów wykonał wiolonczelista Orkiestry Symfoników Gdańskich
i Opery Bałtyckiej – Marcin Szczypiorski.
Płyta osiągnęła szczyt listy najlepiej sprzedających się albumów w Polsce.

Szwedzka Katatonia wydała we wrześniu tego roku swój nowy materiał koncertowy na płycie DVD. Przypomnijmy, że na opublikowanej w 2005 roku kompilacji The Black Sessions znalazł się zapis występu formacji z Krakowa z trasy koncertowej promującej album Viva Emptiness, zaś w 2007 roku światło dzienne ujrzało wydawnictwo Live Consternation zawierające zapis koncertu z Summer Breeze Open Air z Niemiec w dwóch formatach - CD i właśnie DVD.

Last Fair Day Gone Night jest zatem trzecim podejściem kapeli do tej materii. Tym razem dostajemy zapis koncertu grupy z 6 maja 2011 roku w londyńskim klubie Koko. Muzycy świętowali wtedy 20 – lecie zespołu i wykonali w całości, mający wówczas 10 lat, krążek Last Fair Deal Gone Down. Album wyjątkowy, przez wielu uważany za jedno z ich najważniejszych osiągnięć. I to on jest ozdobą pierwszej części koncertu. Wykonany od A do Z, to znaczy od znakomitego Dispossession, po kończący całość Don`t Tell A Soul, nic nie stracił ze swojej siły – niesamowitej mieszanki ciężkich riffów, zimnego głosu Jonasa Renkse, doskonałej melodyki i unoszącego się nastroju wszechobecnej melancholii. Panowie Renkse, Nyström, Eriksson, Liljekvist i Sandin wkładają kawał serducha w to wykonanie a publiczność wypełniająca szczelnie Koko przyjmuje ich entuzjastycznie. Druga część zarejestrowanego występu ma charakter przekrojowy. Muzycy prezentują wybrane numery ze swoich wcześniejszych albumów. Są zatem wyjątki z Brave Murder Day (doskonały, transowy Brave, jedyny w zestawie przypominający czasy, gdy Renkse używał growlu), Discouraged Ones (I Break), Tonight's Decision (Right Into The Bliss), The Great Cold Distance (między innymi „przebojowe” My Twin i July) a nawet takie rarytasy jak, dodany bonusowo do wspomnianego The Great Cold Distance, Dissolving Bonds oraz Wait Outside, który nagrany na potrzeby krążka Viva Emptiness pierwotnie znalazł się na kompilacji The Black Sessions. Najwięcej, bo aż pięć numerów mamy oczywiście z płyty Night Is the New Day, która w momencie koncertu była ostatnim studyjnym dziełem Szwedów. Zresztą okładka tego krążka ozdabia scenę, będąc tłem dla grającego zespołu. A skoro już jesteśmy przy tym, co widać. Materiał został zrealizowany przy użyciu sporej liczby kamer, zmontowany jest dynamicznie i solidnie oddaje dramaturgię występu. Dla pewnego urozmaicenia na obraz nakładane są niekiedy różne efekty nadające mu pewnej chropowatości i surowości.

Last Fair Day Gone Night ma charakter czteropłytowego boksu. Na dyskach CD zamieszczono koncert, który w formie wizyjnej powtórzony jest na płycie DVD. Czwarty dysk w zestawie (a drugi DVD) zawiera dokument A 20th Year Flashback Documentary. To rzecz trwająca prawie dwie i pół godziny i powiedzmy sobie otwarcie… mocno przegadana. Bo oto oglądając archiwalne fotografie i tylko nieliczne przebitki filmowe słuchamy opowieści poszczególnych muzyków (Jonasa Renkse, Andersa Nyströma i Daniela Liljekvista), którzy rok po roku komentują historię zespołu na tle ledwie słyszalnej muzyki z danego okresu. Pewnie, że to prawdziwa encyklopedia dla każdego fana kapeli (i do tego pełna pikantnych imprezowo – alkoholowych szczegółów – oj, potrafią panowie zaszaleć), jednak trudno ją przebrnąć za jednym zamachem. Polscy fani powinni jednak uważnie prześledzić ten filmik, ponieważ pojawiają się w nim między innymi wspomnienia dotyczące pierwszej wizyty grupy w Polsce sprzed 14 laty, podczas której przemierzali nasz kraj… pociągiem i zagrali między innymi na Metalmanii u boku Opeth.

Boks wydany jest pięknie w formie gustownego, twardego digipaka, z grubą książeczką i grafikami Travisa Smitha. To rzecz, która powinna zadowolić każdego miłośnika grupy, ale i ze względu na swój mocno przekrojowy charakter, może być doskonałym wprowadzeniem w twórczość grupy dla tych, którzy jeszcze jej nie poznali.

I saw this video in record shops some years ago in the VHS format, but I never bought it until now, available as DVD.
As "The Story of Supertramp So Far" (until 1990, when the video was made), it really is very brief in the information given about the history of the band: about 12 minutes from their period with Roger Hodgson (1969-83), and about 15 minutes from Hodgson`s departure until the split of the band in 1988. It also has some incorrect information: the first two albums of the band were not recorded by the original line-up, as the narrator says. So, in comparison to other "Video Biographie"s of other bands ("Yesyears" from YES and "Genesis- an History" by Genesis, both released in 1991), this video of Supertramp has very little information, but, a very good thing is that they included 11 complete songs from two concerts filmed during their last tour with Hodgson in 1983 (Toronto and Munich), which is the best part of the video (and the YES and Genesis videos, in comparison, only showed fragments of songs!). In general, all songs are played well, with the help of two guest musicians, Fred Mandel (keyboards, guitar) and a young Scott Page (saxophones, flute, guitar, vocals; years later he also played with Pink Floyd between 1987 and 1989). But as the previous reviewer wrote, most of the time the cameras are focused on Hodgson, Davies and Helliwell, and less time on Siebenberg, Thomson, and the guest musicians. But, at last I could see an official and profesionally filmed concert video of the band (I think that some of these songs were available to be seen in youtube.com some months ago; I remember seeing "Crime of the Century" there). There are some variations to previous live versions of these songs: Helliwell and Page share some sax solos; Page adds flute to one song; there are two guitars playing the solo in "Crime of the Century" (as in the original studio version). "Give a Little Bit" is played a bit faster than the studio version, and at last I could see a live version of "Goodbye Stranger" played with Hodgson. It is also good to see and hear Hodgson singing and playing his own songs in concert with Supertramp, and these live versions are, in my opinion, more "Genuine" than the live versions played by the band without Hodgson.

The DVD also includes five bonus video clips of the next songs:

-"My Kind of Lady": from the "...famous last words..." album, with the members of the band dressed as singers from the fifties. In this video is apparent for me that the split of Hodgson from the band was on the way, as the cameras are focused most of the time in Davies-Helliwell-Siebenberg-Thomson, and in the "backing band" scenes the four of them also appear, with Hodgson only briefly appearing playing the guitar.

-"Cannonball": a video clip of the edited single version of the song, with scenes of "Primitive Man and Woman" mixed with scenes of the band playing in an open air theatre (is it the Hollywood Bowl?).

-"Better Days": an interesting video clip with some political images and futuristic images of the world. Some politicians are also shown in this video.

-And two video clips from songs of the "Free as a Bird" album: "Free as a Bird" and "I`m Beggin` You". It seems that I`m one of the very few persons in this world who like this album, so I also liked both videoclips. The video for "Free as a Bird" shows the band doing a playback of the song with images of birds flying. "I^m Begging You" shows the members of the band filmed on the streets of one city (Los Angeles?) with some images of some women walking on the street too.

In conclusion, this is a good DVD, but maybe the main interest to release it for commercial purposes was to show the band playing in concert during 1983, more than being a long Documentary of the band with more detailed information of their history.So it works better as a concert video, in my opinion.

I noticed the expression 'Christian prog (rock)' just recently but this style wasn't new for me because during my teenage years, back in the 70s, I attended a cluster of gigs in churches and temples and those amateur bands that displayed then worked mainly in the prog-related lines, maybe due to the use of keyboards, flute, acoustic guitars and soft vocals those bands were driven into a more proggish approach. Some songs have a kind of heavenly tenderness and were the favorites to be covered, like ELP's 'Jerusalem' (I mean, their version), PFM's 'Appena un pò', O Terço's 'Tributo ao sorriso' (very uplifting lyrics, indeed), amidst some others. While some friends (both genders) preferred something more danceable, I must confess that having a prog-heart these covers delighted me and I didn't care too much about the intended holy message or the intrinsic proselytism - I liked the music and that was enough.
However, I find the expression 'Christian prog', a bit disturbing; are those doing music with this label the only ones who embrace the said religion? Are they the only ones that have faith? Are all other acts, not labeled so, doomed to the fires of inferno? To avoid confusion maybe a new tag should be thought for labeling those songs and musicians attached to the religious dominion. Well, at least for the progressive realm, they continue to trail those genres we all are used to identify: symphonic, neo, metal, and so on.

That said, it's time to review Neal Morse's DVD titled "Sola Scriptura & Beyond" which is primarily a symphonic-prog production based mainly upon his 2007 "Sola Scriptura" album but containing additional stuff from other albums and also from his Transatlantic & Spock's Beard time that are able to amuse musically the average hearer, being the latter, spiritually gifted or not. While lyrically Neal Morse runs in a particular lane marked by his personal experiences with the divine, musically he keeps a way close to that of Spock's Beard soft side, adding bits of gospel and pop-rock and significant doses of poignancy. Checking how this blend work in a live show is an interesting deal.

Neal appeared very enthusiastic, excited, emotive, energetic. and this posture soon wrapped up his entire staff, mainly the technical people and the supporting band. Considering that the core of this DVD was recorded in The Netherlands, it's not a surprise that the majority of Neal Morse's crew members are Dutch and consequently the audience too. The accompanying musicians are pretty young but showed a high level of professionalism and while a bit shy initially they soon joined Morse's liveliness.

The initial part of Disc 1 containing the "Sola Scriptura" tracks shows Morse & band very concerned for a few participative audience, which is explainable since the songs weren't too much known then - even so the result is beyond fair due to the musicians' skills. The 'Question Mark Medley' and 'Testimedley' sections open the gates for a more warm response from the audience that makes the overall atmosphere to grow intensely. The two final songs 'We all need some light' and 'Wind at my back' from Morse's Transatlantic and Spock's Beard years close the disc grabbing entirely the viewers (there or at home). A classical ender for this fine production.

The bonus material dubbed as Disc 2 brings some amusing and enjoyable musical parts especially those rooted on the "Question Mark" album and where we may catch all progressive influences over Neal Morse. Non-musical and behind the scene parts in this disc are pretty funny and sometimes interesting but add few to the general content.

Not being an expert on cinematography, I may tell that camera positioning (both discs) and movie cuts are impressive and well-crafted putting the hearer/viewer inside the action most of the times. I also heard this DVD as plain CD and while the recording is of the finest extraction it's clear that with a few exceptions the musical stuff is pretty average but the inclusion of images and movement donated a plus that makes this DVD an excellent addition to any progressive collection.

.... Henk Doest, Wilco van Esschoten, Jessica Koomen ... typical Dutch names to be found on the back cover of the new Neal Morse DVD because on his European tour Neal Morse has invited a lot of Dutch musicians. Talking about Dutch musicians, I have a small story for you. A few years ago I worked for the Dutch progrock magazine iO Pages, on our annual 'reviewers meeting' the chief-editor had arranged that one of the reviewer was going to give a 'drum clinic'. Well, he did and we were all very impressed, afterwards I had a talk with him and it turned out that we shared a huge appreciation for Neil Peart. Looking at the back cover I noticed the aforementioned typical Dutch names and ... the name of Collin Leijenaar, the iO Pages reviewer/drummer who gave that clinic: the one moment he wrote about Spock's Beard, the other moment he's the drummer of Neal Morse his band! And Collin is not only the drummer, he's also the driving force behind the Neal Morse band, wat an outstanding blend of skills and power, especially during the heavy symphonic rock and progmetal parts, very exciting.

On DVD-1 we can enjoy Neal his catchy enthousiasm, his funny stage antics and his great, very varied musical skills on several instruments: in the long and excellent composition The Creation (featuring wonderful choir-Mellotron) he easily switches from fat synthesizers runs on his keyboard to heavy guitar work on his electric guitar, showing a big smile, I love that 'playful musical megalomania '. I was also pleased with Neal his short vocal performance of the Seventies Top 10 hit Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks (it was my favorite ballad too) during the Spock's Beard tribute entitled The Good Don't Last/Open Wide The Flood Gates. The track The Door delivers heavy interplay with lots of scale-acrobatics, genuine progmetal with lush Hammond organ, not bad at all to use an understatement. Guitarplayer Paul Bielatowicz showcases his huge talents in this and the next song The Conflict/The Conclusion with hints from Steve Vai but he also plays warm blues with a bottleneck or more spacey with an E-bow, what a killer guitarplayer! In the long tracks Question Mark Medley and Testimedley again the band delivers excellent interplay and very exciting solos on guitar and keyboard (like a flashy solo on the synthesizer by Neal himself). The concert is concluded with the two ballad-like songs We All Need Some Light (in which Neal is grateful to the fans because "you show more understanding why I play for 3 hours than my wife ..") and the pleasant final one Wind At My Back.

DVD-2 contains a lot of 'bonus footage' like 'behind the scenes', an acoustic version of Bridge Across Forever and 9 bonustracks of the Question Mark tour, really interesting to watch.

In my opinion Neal Morse has succeeded to reach a wide audience with his tasteful and dynamic blend of ballads, symphonic rock and prog metal and how nice to notice so many Dutch musicans on stage. Highly recommended!

Album uzyskał status platynowej płyty.

W nagraniach udział gościnnie wzięli m.in. Jan Borysewicz i José Torres.
Album przyniósł przebój „Coraz mniej”, który jest polskojęzyczną wersją piosenki „Wishing Well” z płyty Urszula & Jumbo.
Płytę promowała również nowa wersja hitu „Dmuchawce, latawce, wiatr”.
