Rok 2018 na razie nie zapowiada się ciekawie pod względem płytowych premier, lecz przyniósł już jedno bardzo interesujące wydawnictwo. Jest nim wydany niemal równo miesiąc temu album "The Hands" szwedzkiego tria Fire!. Zespół powstał blisko dekadę temu z inicjatywy saksofonisty Matsa Gustafssona - jednego z najbardziej zapracowanych muzyków w branży, zaangażowanego w dziesiątki projektów i współpracującego z niezliczonymi artystami, głównie ze świata jazzu, choć czasem też rocka (wspomagał chociażby Sonic Youth). Od samego początku towarzyszy mu sekcja rytmiczna składająca się z basisty Johana Berthlinga i perkusisty Andreasa Werliina. Trio wydało dotąd sześć albumów studyjnych (wliczając najnowszy), a także trzy kolejne pod szyldem Fire! Orchestra, na których towarzyszy mu mocno rozbudowany skład. Stylistycznie zespół porusza się w rejonach fusion, jazz rocka i free jazzu z domieszką noise'u, psychodelii i elementów krautrocka - wymieszanych w różnych proporcach, w zależności od albumu.

Na "The Hands" muzycy postawili przede wszystkim na brudne, surowe brzmienie. Ciężka gra sekcji rytmicznej, z przesterowanym basem, budzi skojarzenia ze stoner metalem, a towarzyszą jej przeszywające, ostre dźwięki różnych saksofonów (tenorowego, barytonowego i basowego), wyraźnie zahaczające o estetykę free (tu i ówdzie brzmienie dopełniane jest jeszcze elektronicznymi szumami). Jak rewelacyjny dało to efekt, można przekonać się już w otwierającym album utworze tytułowym, napędzanym energetyczną grą perkusisty, z porywającym basowym riffem i drapieżnymi, lecz całkiem melodyjnymi solówkami saksofonu. Albo w "To Shave the Leaves. In Red. In Black.", w którym zespół dla odmiany maksymalnie zwalnia tempo - sekcja gra niemal doommetalowo, co świetnie współgra z posępnymi partiami saksofonu. Transowa monotonia i ciężki klimat tego utworu zwalają z nóg. Bardzo fajnie wypadają też pozostałe utwory łączące stonerowy czad sekcji rytmicznej z freejazzowymi odlotami saksofonu, czyli "When Her Lips Collapsed" i "Up and Down". Są tu także utwory o odmiennym charakterze - "Washing Your Heart in Filth", oparty na egzotycznie brzmiących perkusjonaliach, oraz "Touches Me With the Tips of Wonder" i "I Guard Her to Rest. Declaring Silence.", zagrane bardziej subtelne, niemalże akustycznie (nie licząc cichego elektronicznego skwierczenia). Całość trwa niespełna 37 minut, więc nie sposób odczuć znużenia - zwłaszcza, że cały czas dzieją się tu same ciekawe rzeczy.

"The Hands" udowadnia, że fuzja jazzu i rocka w XXI wieku wciąż może brzmieć świeżo i ekscytująco. Fantastyczny album. Polecam wszystkim, którzy nie boją się nowych muzycznych doznań.

Krótkie spięcie.
Słuchanie muzyki tria Fire! nie powinno nastręczać trudności. Obarczać ich styl określeniem „trudny” jest dla mnie czymś niezrozumiałym. Owszem możemy powiedzieć, że jest to muzyka ciężka, miejscami agresywna, oparta na free jazzie oraz ukierunkowana na improwizację. Tylko, że to wciąż za mało, aby zamknąć w słowach twórczość Matsa Gustafssona, Johana Berthlinga i Andreasa Werliina. Dorzucić należy jeszcze słowa bezkompromisowa oraz odważna. W ich odwadze wychodzenia poza ramy gatunku jazzu upatrywałbym magnetycznej siły. Poprzednia płyta „She Sleeps, She Sleeps” była w głównej mierze powolna. Sekcja rytmiczna zwolniła tempo, a saksofon wygrywał żałobne partie. „The Hands” wnosi korektę do polityki zespołu.

Pierwsze i nieodparte skojarzenie jakie nasuwa się po przesłuchaniu utworu pierwszego to Black Sabbath. Ten sam rodzaj nisko osadzonego brzmienia, nieokiełznanej energii oraz kompletnego zaniku delikatności. Rozwydrzony z pozoru styl grania, w gruncie rzeczy pokazuje mistrzostwo tria. Zwrócę uwagę na żelazną konsekwencję sekcji rytmicznej. Mocne, siłowe granie idealnie stworzone do wyciskania potu ze słuchacza. Na to nakładają się improwizatorskie popisy Gustafssona, przeszywające wstawki, przesterowany bas czy w końcu melodyjne momenty. Surowa i oszczędna forma „When Her Lips Collapsed” odwołuje się do pierwotnych instynktów. Miarowy rytm sekcji rytmicznej zaczerpnięty z muzyki rockowej stoi w opozycji do popisów saksofonu. Mocne, rzężące frazy dają upust istnej furii.

Jako, że stanów pośrednich ten album nie posiada, więc albo mamy doładowanie turbo albo ostudzenie emocji. Właśnie w tym tonie wygrany został „Touches Me With The Tips Of Wonder”. Porozciągane frazy saksofonu, w tle ciekawe perkusyjne przejścia i pomruki basu. Traktowani tu jesteśmy łagodniej niż na początku bardziej poduszką niż młotkiem. Naturalną kulminacją jest najdłuższy na płycie „To Shave The Leaves. In Red. In Black.”. Na upartego można się tu dosłuchać wpływów metalu. Pełny dostojeństwa, kroczącego tempa, ale ze świdrującymi partiami saksofonu. Trochę jakby niemiecki warsztat samochodowy był zarządzany przez hiszpańskiego lekkoducha. Tylko, że to wszystko jest skandynawskie do bólu. Słyszalna jest nuta smutku.

„Washing Your Heart In Filth” wprowadza kilka istotnych modyfikacji z mojego punktu widzenia. Otóż tu uwagę skupia głównie gra Andreasa Werliina. Skomplikowane rytmy, które wprowadzają więcej porywczości i destabilizacji. Jest to o tyle ciekawe, że do tej pory perkusja raczej tworzyła żelazną ramę, a teraz wciela się w rolę prowodyra. Gustafsson stara się dogonić kolegę, a do tego dochodzi jeszcze zrywny styl gry Johana Berthlinga. Drugą ważną zmianą jest „I Guard Her To Rest. Declaring Silence.”. Opleciony dymem z papierosa jazz grany na kontrabasie z wydelikaconą frazą dęciaka. Rzadko spotkać można tak grające Fire! Poważny ton, wyważone granie oraz brak improwizacyjnego szaleństwa. Znakomite zwieńczenie dość krótkiej płyty (niecałe 37 minut). Wszystko to tworzy kolejny, udany album tria. Jednak w przypadku „The Hands” dostrzegam większą pracę twórczą, niż na poprzednich płytach. Widać to po tytułach utworów, umiejętnie zastosowanej elektronice (początki i końce niektórych kawałków) oraz po wypracowanych, rytmicznych wzorach Berthlinga. Doskonałe.

For 20 years Rune Grammofon have made a habit of releasing music that is beyond easy classification, in later years typified by Swedish trio Fire!, consisting of Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin. All three are highly accomplished musicians, but Fire! music is not "difficult" in the sense that jazz and especially free jazz is often perceived. Very much a tight knit unit with three equal players, Fire! has been likened to powerful guitar led trios such as Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but with Berthling´s heavy, doom laden basslines being such a typical identifier, we can´t help but thinking of Black Sabbath´s debut album when it comes to hypnotic impact.
The Hands is the trio´s sixth album and once again displays a totally uncompromising and intriguing mix of (mostly) heavy, dark and intensely burning music whether one decide on calling it jazz or rock. The album closes on a quiet and reflective note with the appropriately titled "I Guard Her To Rest. Declaring Silence".
And we say it´s easily their best so far.

Brytyjscy mistrzowie improwizacji, których nie trzeba specjalnie przedstawiać, kontrabasista John Edwards oraz perkusista Mark Sanders, towarzyszą saksofoniście Mikołajowi Trzasce, zapraszając na ponad godzinną, intensywną konwersację.

Muzyka "komponowana na żywo", użyjmy takiego sformułowania, lubi mieć rezonujących słuchaczy, ich obecność jest niezbędnym składnikiem koncertowego rytuału. Wspólnota tworzona przez wykonawców oraz uwaga odbiorców wpływają na kształt i formę wydarzenia. Nagranie koncertowe bywa więc szczególnym doświadczeniem, swoją wartością często przewyższa studyjną sterylność.

Słychać tu doskonałe porozumienie pomiędzy muzykami, którzy raz po raz to wysuwają się na główny plan by za moment nieco się wycofać, dopełniając jednak całość brzmieniem swoich instrumentów i czyniąc ją jeszcze bardziej kompletną. Jako, że Trzaska znany jest również jako twórca muzyki filmowej, jej echa, choć dość mgliste i ulotne, to są jednak słyszalne i tu. Grane przez niego motywy chwilami nasuwają skojarzenia, choćby ze ścieżką dźwiękowa do filmu Kos, której autorem był właśnie Mikołaj.

Choć płyta podzielona jest na dziewięć kompozycji (dla porządku warto dodać, że dwie ostatnie kompozycje znajdziemy tylko na CD oraz na oddzielnie wydanej 10-calówce Not So Late.), to na albumie przenikają się one naturalnie, oddając przy tym dobrze ich koncertowy charakter. Warto słuchać jej właśnie od deski do deski by poczuć tę atmosferę i móc w wyobraźni „przenieść się” do londyńskiego klubu, gdzie zarejestrowano ten jakże udany występ.

Three masters of improvisation: Mikołaj Trzaska on saxophone, John Edwards on double bass and Mark Sanders on drums.
They don't use the term "improvisation," preferring instead to speak of "live composition" and the audience, who are an essential component of the concert ritual. The community created by the performers and the audience's attention influence the shape and form of the event. A concert recording can therefore be a special experience, its value often surpassing studio sterility. The meeting of these three experienced musicians seems to be the next stage in which awareness begins to reach beyond purely technical skills. It becomes a bridge where music transforms into storytelling, a stage of breaking out of old ruts in favor of a more intimate, personal, magical image. This material encompasses diverse emotions, and beyond the shockwaves, elements of lyrical reflection emerge. It's not too late for surprises, which still occur. The artists appear in different constellations, each time daring to embark on a journey, abandoning comfort zones to rediscover themselves in the wilderness. Studied fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. He grew up on the grounds of yass - an artistic and social movement. He co-founded the most important yass formation - the legendary Love, and was also the leader of the famous Łoskot. When the momentum of yass faded, he became a leading figure in the domestic avant-garde. His presence in the international world of improvised music began in the early 2000s, when he began his musical travels to Scandinavia, Ukraine, Western Europe and the United States. While touring, he learned the art of music alongside some of the world's most prominent artists in this direction, such as Ken Vandermark, Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee and many others. These collaborations as well as his authorial achievements have been documented by dozens of record albums. For years he has been creating projects related to literature. The basis of Trzaska's creative search is the construction of a personal language and individual means of expression. He asks himself the question. “What do we create for? And what do we want to convey? He is known to a wider audience as a composer of film music, permanently cooperating with Wojciech Smarzowski, composing music for films: The House of Evil, The Rose, Wolyn, Under the Strong Angel, The Cleric, The Wedding 2. His latest work can be heard in the music track of Paweł Maślona film KOS.

He has also played with Jah Wobble, Harold Budd, Bill Laswell, Christian Marclay, International Contemporary Ensemble, Ilan Volkov and The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.He is a member of many working groups including duos with Nicole Mitchell and Rhodri Davies, Neil Charles' 'Dark Days' with Cleveland Watkiss & Pat Thomas, 'Last Dream of the Morning' with John Butcher & John Edwards, 'Shifa' with Rachel Musson and Pat Thomas and 'Sarost' with Larry Stabbins & Paul Rogers. As an educator he has taught improvisation at many universities around the country as a lecturer and guest tutor.

Znajdź kogoś bardziej zapracowanego niż Mats Gustafsson. Głupie zdanie, kilku takich będzie, ale nie psujmy Szwedowi reputacji, bo i tak jest bardzo dobra. To uzasadnione w każdym calu. Fire! natomiast to zespół z takimi pokładami talentu i muzycznego spełnienia, że czegokolwiek nie weźmiemy, musi być i faktycznie jest dobrze. Nie inaczej sytuacja wgląda z She Sleeps, She Sleeps, najnowszym wydawnictwem tria, które ukazało się nakładem norweskiej oficyny Rune Grammofon.

Związana na stałe z wytwórnią z Oslo formacja od lat na nowo interpretuje muzykę improwizowaną, skrupulatnie rozszerzając jej i tak ogromne granice. O co chodzi? O to wielowątkowe podejście do komponowania. Komponowania, tak, bo poza free-impro mam odczucie, że Szwedzi musieli niejako rozpisać te utwory na chociażby pojedyncze, ale scalające się frazy. Wyszło im, jak to w ich przypadku bywa, znakomicie. Na spokojnie, powoli, idealnie do nadanego przez nich tytułu. No, z malutkimi wyjąteczkami.

Trio tworzone przez Matsa Gustafssona, Johana Berthlinga i Andreasa Werliina nagrało płytę mroczną, powolną, ale sprawiającą ogromną radość słuchaczom. Tak, takie melodie się ceni, i nieważne już, o którym z utworów na tym wydawnictwie mówimy. Ale pomówmy o nich choć chwilkę, bo niejako odbiegają od standardów, do których przyzwyczaili nas Fire!

Otwierające płytę „She Owned His Voice” mniej więcej zakreśla schematy całego wydawnictwa. Mniej, bo jest to wybitnie rozimprowizowany utwór, jeśli popatrzymy na pozostałe nagrania z She Sleeps, She Sleeps. To, co prawda, nie jest pełne szaleństwo, z którego słynie Gustafsson (żeby wspomnieć tylko o także tegorocznym Melt), ale na warunki płyty jest nieźle. Tym jednak, co scala utwór numer jeden z pozostałą częścią płyty, jest sama aura. Ponura, melancholijna, a to za sprawą saksofonu właśnie. Mats ciągnie na saksofonie swoje smętne opowieści, a pozostali członkowie zespołu mu w tym nie przeszkadzają. Tempo nadawane przez Werliina lekko stopuje improwizowane partie saksofonu, a kontrabas tylko tę mroczną atmosferę potęguje. Tak mija „She Owned His Voice”, nadając całokształt wydawnictwu. Utwór tytułowy, drugi co do długości, ten zarys płyty pogłębia, udowadniając, że Fire! na She Sleeps, She Sleeps to Fire! niesamowicie wycofane, jakby na proszkach uspokajających. Ale czy to w ogóle wada? Skądże, to odsłonięcie nowych perspektyw i… jednocześnie zaprezentowanie ujmującego podejścia do komponowania. Na uwagę zasługuje przede wszystkim stonowana i niemal klasycznie jazzowa perkusja. No i sam saksofon, za pomocą którego Mats Gustafsson dalej wyczynia swoje uwodzące solówki.

Hałaśliwym i niezobowiązującym przerywnikiem jest natomiast „She Bid A Meaningless Farewell”, które można odbierać głównie jako pole do popisu dla Andreasa na perkusji. Kto liczył na jakieś impro-highlighty, musi jednak obejść się smakiem, bo tu liczy się rytmika i systematyka. Do perki oczywiście dołączają kolejne instrumenty, w tym wiolonczela Leo Svensson Sandera, natomiast jest to raczej tylko próba chaotycznego wzniecenia atmosfery przed punktem kulminacyjnym płyty. A tymże jest „She Penetrates The Distant Silence, Slowly”, utwór najdłuższy i najlepszy jednocześnie. Najbardziej misterny, z rewelacyjnym, posępnym i zapętlającym się samoistnie w głowie motywem przewodnim wygrywanym na kontrabasie. Perkusja, przeszkadzajki i saksofon sprawiają, że już i tak gęste powietrze staje się jeszcze cięższe, a ten obrany motyw aż hipnotyzuje. I co warto zaznaczyć, i w tym utworze, i tak naprawdę we wszystkich kompozycjach słychać, kto Fire!, szczególnie na She Sleeps, She Sleeps, pcha do przodu, przejmując stery skandynawskiej łodzi. Chodzi, rzecz jasna, o Matsa, bo i w tym zdominowanym niby przez kontrabas temacie i tak przebłyski należą do saksofonu. A sama płyta? Ze swoją własną duszą, niby improwizowaną, niby lekko szaleńczą, a tak naprawdę melancholijną, stonowaną i po prostu bardzo ładną. Delikatną.

Fire! is a Swedish trio comprising Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), Johan Berthling (Tape) and Andreas Werliin (Wildbirds & Peacedrums) that came together with the idea of a fresh approach to improvised music, with a number of influences from free jazz, psychedelic rock and noise. Fire! is also their vehicle for rekindling their instrumental skills and playing outside their comfort zones, or collaborating with prestigious guests such as Jim O´Rourke (Unreleased?, 2011) and Oren Ambarchi (In The Mouth A Hand, 2012). A parallel but no less powerful project is their gargantuan Fire! Orchestra, previously a 30 piece behemoth (now scaled down to a mere 18 piece) of a band that convened for the first time in January 2012 for a memorable concert. Their third album is expected later in 2016.

She Sleeps, She Sleeps is the trio´s fifth album and displays an intriguing cocktail of dark and brooding, hypnotic slowcore jazz.



She Sleeps, She Sleeps is the fifth album release from Fire! (yes, that exclamation mark is an integral part of the name), the Swedish supergroup trio of saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Johan Berthling and drummer Andreas Werliin. It sees the three return to duty as a trio following the distraction of recording and touring with the Fire! Orchestra, with its membership of about thirty. Away from the orchestra, past Fire! albums have seen the trio collaborating with other musicians such as guitarists Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi. Although their last trio album, (Without Noticing) (Rune Gramoffon, 2013), included no such additions, this time around three of the album's four tracks do include guests, Ambarchi on one track and cellist Leo Svensson Sander on two others.

The seven-and-a-half minute opening track, "She Owned His Voice," features the trio alone, and it is a potent reminder of what a fine group this is; the three members are immediately locked into each other, bass and drums providing a tight, driving groove over which Gustafsson gives a textbook example of what he does so well, firing off bursts of focussed, sustained baritone that display his awesome stamina, lung-power and phrasing. Next up, on the longer title track the rhythm section is just as reliable, allowing room for Gustafsson and Ambarchi to trade phrases that sound decidedly angst-ridden and atmospheric.

For the second half of the album's forty-four minutes, the trio are joined by cellist Sander who slots in with assurance, although the four-minute "She Bid a Meaningless Farewell" is dominated by a workmanlike drum solo before bass and cello join in to add to the pulse. The album is brought to a storming climax by "She Penetrates the Distant Silence. Slowly" which opens with bass alone and then gradually adds layers of sound and builds momentum before ending with a full-on assault by all four players—altogether an object lesson in controlled power and dynamics.

Aficionados of Fire! will find plenty here to remind them of the group's many strengths; newcomers can confidently join in here, knowing they have a treat in store.

Znajdź kogoś bardziej zapracowanego niż Mats Gustafsson. Głupie zdanie, kilku takich będzie, ale nie psujmy Szwedowi reputacji, bo i tak jest bardzo dobra. To uzasadnione w każdym calu. Fire! natomiast to zespół z takimi pokładami talentu i muzycznego spełnienia, że czegokolwiek nie weźmiemy, musi być i faktycznie jest dobrze. Nie inaczej sytuacja wgląda z She Sleeps, She Sleeps, najnowszym wydawnictwem tria, które ukazało się nakładem norweskiej oficyny Rune Grammofon.

Związana na stałe z wytwórnią z Oslo formacja od lat na nowo interpretuje muzykę improwizowaną, skrupulatnie rozszerzając jej i tak ogromne granice. O co chodzi? O to wielowątkowe podejście do komponowania. Komponowania, tak, bo poza free-impro mam odczucie, że Szwedzi musieli niejako rozpisać te utwory na chociażby pojedyncze, ale scalające się frazy. Wyszło im, jak to w ich przypadku bywa, znakomicie. Na spokojnie, powoli, idealnie do nadanego przez nich tytułu. No, z malutkimi wyjąteczkami.
