...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI.



..::OPIS::..

W 2016 roku Slash zdecydował się na powrót do Guns N’ Roses, krok ten nie oznaczał jednak (na szczęście!) rezygnacji z kariery w ramach solowych projektów. Po dziesięciu latach nagrywania z Mylesem Kennedym i Panami z The Conspirators, gitarzysta powrócił do korzeni (wieloznaczność tego słowa) i przedstawia klimatyczny, bluesowy krążek pełen gwiazd!

Choć Slash odszedł z Guns N’ Roses w 1996 roku, to nie zdecydował się od razu rozpocząć kariery solowej. Muzyk najpierw działał w ramach Slash's Snakepit, kolejno zaś połączył siły m.in. z Duffem McKaganem w ramach formacji Velvet Revolver. Dopiero po wyciszeniu działalności tego projektu, gitarzysta zdecydował się w pełni “pójść na swoje” i w 2010 roku zaprezentował debiutancki solowy album, zatytułowany po prostu “Slash”. Krążek zaprezentował pełnię umiejętności “kudłatego” - jego hard rockową, heavy metalową, ale także nieco bardziej bluesową odsłonę. W ramach tego projektu Slash zaprosił do współpracy całe grono wybitnych wokalistów i wokalistek, by wymienić chociażby Ozzy’ego Osbourne’a, Lemmy’ego Kilmistera, Chrisa Cornella, Fergie, Dave’a Grohla, Alice’a Coopera, Iggy’ego Popa czy Mylesa Kennedy’ego.

To właśnie z tym ostatnim, wokalistą znanym z działalności w zespole Alter Bridge, gitarzystę połączyła szczególna twórcza chemia, która doprowadziła do kontynuowania wspólnej ścieżki, do której dołączyła także formacja The Conspirators. W takim składzie muzycy zaprezentowali w 2012 roku pierwszy wspólny album - genialny, świeży, “Apocalyptic Love”. Wydawnictwo zostało bardzo dobrze przyjęte przez krytyków, a co najważniejsze fanów i fanki gitarzysty, nic więc dziwnego, że w kolejnych latach ten szczególny projekt połączył siły jeszcze trzy razy: na “World on Fire”, “Living the Dream” i najnowszym, “4” z lutego 2022 roku. Slash, Myles i Konspiratorzy wciąż razem koncertują, zdaje się więc, że nie powiedzieli jeszcze ostatniego słowa, jeśli chodzi o wspólną muzykę.


Czas na bluesa!
Dość nieoczekiwanie dla wielu jednak, Slash postanowił wrócić do tego, od czego to wszystko się zaczęło. Muzyk już w 2023 roku potwierdził, że pracuje nad albumem, który formatem powtórzy jego debiut z 2010 roku, a więc będzie to płyta nagrana z udziałem różnych, uznanych wokalistów i wokalistek. Jakiś czas później gitarzysta powiedział, że chce tym razem skupić się na brzmieniu bluesowym!

Oficjalne wieści na temat wydawnictwa nadeszły na początku marca, gdy światło dzienne ujrzał pierwszy singiel z albumu, którego tytuł to “Orgy of the Damned”. Na pierwszy ogień poszedł elektryzujący kawałek “Killing Floor”, nagrany z gościnnym udziałem Briana Johnsona z AC/DC (wokal) i Stevena Tylera z Aerosmith (harmonijka). Panowie zaprezentowali elektryzującą, wciągającą od pierwszych nut własną wersję klasyka, który w oryginale wykonywał Howlin’ Wolf. Wtedy też stało się jasne, że Slash tym razem zdecydował się nagrać, tak naprawdę cover album, jednak szczególny, na który trafiły inspirujące go od najmłodszych lat standardy, głównie bluesowe, ale także ze świata R&B i soulu. O tym, jak bardzo klimatycznego projektu można się spodziewać wszyscy przekonaliśmy się, gdy gitarzysta udostępnił drugi singiel z płyty - genialny hołd dla Fleetwood Mac z czasów Petera Greena, czyli własną interpretację kultowego, tu z podkreślonym klimatem country (spora w tym zasługa wokalisty, Chrisa Stapletona, który z tym światem jest blisko związany) “Oh Well”.


Nadać im własny charakter
O tym, że Slash nie ma zamiaru prezentować zwykłych coverów przekonać się można już słuchając otwierającego płytę “The Pusher”. Interpretacja gitarzysty i Chrisa Robinsona z The Black Crowes brzmi niczym zupełnie nowa kompozycja, tak odbiegająca od, nieco dziwacznego, ale przez to też wciągającego oryginału - jest od niego także znacznie dłuższa, gdyż trwa siedem minut z sekundami! To cecha, która wyróżnia każdy utwór z “Orgy of the Damned” - są tu jedynie dwie kompozycje, trzy- i czterominutowe. Łącznie dwanaście piosenek - jedenaście coverów i jedna autorska kompozycja, całość trwająca ponad godzinę - krążek ten w żadnym momencie jednak nie traci na mocy. Urzeka duet z Garym Clarkiem Jr. z tą świetną solówką, hipnotyzuje tak zmysłowy i naprawdę mocno bluesowy “Hoochie Coochie Man”, w którym słychać samego Billy’ego F. Gibbonsa z ZZ Top! Ta kompozycja tak cudownie się ciągnie, trwa pod osłoną wspaniałego solo od Slasha - coś pięknego! Pod względem urokliwego klimatu, interpretacja ta idealnie łączy się z “Awful Dream”, w której zaśpiewała inna ikona - jedyny, niepowtarzalny, nazywany “ojcem chrzestnym punka”, ale w duszy będący bluemanem Iggy Pop. Jak jego wokal pasuje do tego klasyka! Jest leniwie, ale przez to niezwykle nastrojowo, wręcz tak letnio - zaryzykowałabym, że nowa wersja wypada dużo lepiej od oryginału!


Zerknij do oryginału!
Tu pojawia się pytanie - czy warto zapoznać się - lub przypomnieć sobie - oryginalne wersje kompozycji, wybranych przez Slasha na ten album? Uważam, że tak. To naprawdę klasyczne już, podejrzewam, że nie znane aż tak szerokiemu gronu odbiorców, bluesowe standardy. Warto to zrobić chociażby po to, by móc wyłapać, jak dużo siebie - swojej inwencji, swoich umiejętności i podejścia do tego gatunku Slash nadał własnym interpretacjom. Jako przykłady można tu podać, chociażby singlowe “Killing Floor”, które tu staje się rockowo-funkowym klasykiem. Szczególnie interesujące jest to, co Slash był w stanie zrobić z pojawiającym się w oryginale solo. Najwybitniejszymi przykładami coverów, które zdają się być zupełnie nowymi kompozycjami będą tu jednak dwie inne kompozycje.“Key to the Highway” - w oryginale spokojny, zorientowany na brzmieniu pianina, tu staje się rockowym hymnem z genialnym wokalem Dorothy Martin i intro, przypominającym chociażby legendarną już wersję ‘Paradise City” z 2010 roku, nagraną z udziałem Fergie i Cypress Hill. To samo tyczy się “Born Under A Bad Sign” z cudownie brzmiącym Paulem Rodgersem (jak dobrze go słyszeć w dobrej formie!). Wersja z końcówki lat 60. ma w sobie ten rockowy pazur, Slash jednak wyciągnął z niego na wierzch te wszystkie bebechy, zachowując jednak tego ducha “lata miłości”.

Praktycznie na samym końcu albumu ma miejsce jego - moim skromnym zdaniem - punkt centralny. Najdłuższa kompozycja, prawie ośmiominutowy efekt współpracy z jedyną Beth Hart to jak taki skarb, jedyna w swoim rodzaju perła, ukrywająca się już i tak w otoczeniu prawdziwych klejnotów. W wykonaniu tej dwójki tak bardzo niepozorne “Stormy Monday” T-Bone Walkera z 1947 (!) roku staje się czymś totalnie majestatycznym! Gitarowe intro Slasha, jego pojawiające się solówki w trakcie - i ta Beth. Jej głos mógłby kruszyć ściany i swoją mocą, ale też pasją i charakterem. Nie pożałujecie żadnej z tych prawie ośmiu minut, a ja marzę, żeby kiedyś usłyszeć to na żywo. Ogień.


'Blues mood'
Są dwa, według mnie nieco gorsze, a na pewno odstające od reszty, momenty na “Orgy of the Damned”. Pierwszym będzie tak szumnie zapowiadany duet z Demi Lovato. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” w jej wykonaniu brzmi aż za bardzo poprawnie, wręcz technicznie. Zabrakło tu tego luzu, bluesowej obojętności. Rzeczywiście, współpraca ta będzie zaskoczeniem, ale raczej dla fanów i fanek Lovato, niż odbiorców Slasha. Dla mnie jeden z bardziej, aż szkoda mi to pisać, irytujących momentów na krążku. Bardzo lubię jednak oryginał, ma taki jedyny w swoim rodzaju “mood” - przy nim też pozostanę. To samo tyczy się współpracy z Tashem Nealem. Muzyk zaśpiewał w coverze “Living for the City” Steviego Wondera (sam w sobie, dość zaskakujący wybór, jak na ten album). Cóż, uważam, że o ile “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” jeszcze jakoś się broni - słychać uwielbienie Slasha dla tej kompozycji, on sam też bardzo entuzjastycznie wspominał współpracę z Demi, tak myślę, że“Orgy of the Damned” na spokojnie obeszłoby się bez tych aż prawie siedmiu minut “Living for the City”.


Od małego przesiąknięty bluesem
Całość zamyka genialny instrumentalny utwór “Metal Chestnut” - tylko Slash i jego gitara, która w dłoniach muzyka staje się kluczem do otwierania innych portali, innych, muzycznych światów. Choć “kudłaty” zasłynął jako gitarzysta formacji otwarcie hard rockowej, to już jako dziecko w jego duszy zaszczepiony został blues, a jego klimat jest słyszalny w grze Slasha. On sam w nowej rozmowie ze stacją radiową Arizona’s KLPX stwierdził, że Gunsi oparci są właśnie na bluesie, a on pozostawał w otoczeniu tego właśnie świata tak naprawdę przez cały czas. Ta odsłona gitarzysty może być dla wielu pewnym zaskoczeniem - z pewnością przedstawia go w zupełnie innym, niż zazwyczaj świetle. Ale tu te reflektory świecą nad wyraz jasno.
