Pierwszy dzień festiwalu otwiera Oskar Cyms - Artysta Roku 2025. To wokalista, którego kariera rozpoczęła się w Polsacie, a dziś jest on jednym z najważniejszych wykonawców młodego pokolenia.
To on zaczyna żelazny punkt każdego sopockiego festiwalu, czyli Radiowy Hit Roku. Pierwszy raz na CD! Wydany w 1975 roku przez amerykański United Artists, trzeci album w karierze tego utalentowanego klawiszowca dla wielu słuchaczy może być ogromną niespodzianką! Jak to możliwe, że ten doskonały, progresywny album ze Stanów utrzymany na poziomie najlepszych dokonań połowy lat 70-tych został tak całkowicie pominięty/zapomniany przez fanów rocka progresywnego oraz wydawców płyt kompaktowych! W każdym razie, najlepszą w dyskografii MQ płytę zdominowało mocno klasycyzujące granie spod znaku Trace, Refugee, Focus, Ricka Wakemana i wczesnych Queen.

I jakkolwiek te porównania nie zabrzmią (dla niektórych pewnie odpychająco), to płytę wypełnia soczyste, rasowe, niemal w całości instrumentalne, progresywne granie oparte na brzmieniu organów, melotronu i fortepianu oraz całkiem ostrej gitary i solidnej sekcji rytmicznej. Wystarczy posłuchać pierwszych dwóch, trzech minut 20-minutowej, tytułowej suity żeby się upewnić, że mamy do czynienia z płytą może nie do końca oryginalną, ale na swój sposób naprawdę wyjątkową!

Aha, Michael Quatro to rodzony brat bardzo niegdyś popularnej Suzi...


In 1975 the great innovators and leaders in the world of progressive rock were starting to drift towards other things and the genre was headed for a downturn in general. Still, stubborn fans of the genre refused to give up and began looking for some new faces to keep their interest alive. This was also compounded in the states by the fact that yank bands were finally getting a handle on this particularly British brand of creative rock music and stateside progressive rock fans were finally becoming receptive to the idea of supporting some local talent. This was the setting that Detroit bred keyboardist Michael Quatro stepped into with his uniquely American brand of quasi-classical influenced prog-rock music mixed with Detroit glitter rock presentation.
This album, In Collaboration with the Gods, marked a peak in Quatro's very short lived reign as a possible leader in American progressive rock. There are a lot of obvious comparisons here because, despite his obvious talents, Michael is not a particularly original artist. Most of this album consists of multi-keyboard oriented instrumentals whose leanings towards somewhat cheezey pseudo-classical affectations recall some of the more lightweight mid-70s output of Rick Wakeman, Camel and Focus. Meanwhile, Michael's occasional vocals on the 'rockin' numbers recall the sound of American blue collar semi-prog rockers like Journey and Styxx, and his mix of glitter and pseudo classical tendencies can sound like early Queen at times as well.

It was fun hearing this album again, but I think its major importance is mostly musicological in terms of the development of progressive rock in the US. Still, I think fans of mid to late 70s Rick Wakeman and Camel might find some things to like here, Quatro has a Mellotron and he knows how to use it. Its also fun to hear 70s American guitar ace Rick Derringer playing prog- rock as a guest on a couple of numbers. By the way, to those who are curious, Michael is the brother of proto-punk and Happy Days star Suzi Quatro.

This was the setting that Detroit bred keyboardist Michael Quatro stepped into with his uniquely American brand of quasi-classical influenced prog-rock music mixed with Detroit glitter rock presentation.
This album, In Collaboration with the Gods, marked a peak in Quatro's very short lived reign as a possible leader in American progressive rock. There are a lot of obvious comparisons here because, despite his obvious talents, Michael is not a particularly original artist. Most of this album consists of multi-keyboard oriented instrumentals whose leanings towards somewhat cheezey pseudo-classical affectations recall some of the more lightweight mid-70s output of Rick Wakeman, Camel and Focus. Meanwhile, Michael's occasional vocals on the 'rockin' numbers recall the sound of American blue collar semi-prog rockers like Journey and Styxx, and his mix of glitter and pseudo classical tendencies can sound like early Queen at times as well.

It was fun hearing this album again, but I think its major importance is mostly musicological in terms of the development of progressive rock in the US. Still, I think fans of mid to late 70s Rick Wakeman and Camel might find some things to like here, Quatro has a Mellotron and he knows how to use it. Its also fun to hear 70s American guitar ace Rick Derringer playing prog- rock as a guest on a couple of numbers. By the way, to those who are curious, Michael is the brother of proto-punk and Happy Days star Suzi Quatro.

Four studio albums and a live set from Mick Underwood’s Strapps.

Mick Underwood had already enjoyed a lengthy career, building up an impressive musical resume since joining Ritchie Blackmore in The Outlaws in 1964, before forming Strapps in 1975. With Underwood’s impressive rock pedigree, including Quatermass, Harvest Records, home of Deep Purple and Pink Floyd, was a perfect fit for the new band. Joined by Australian singer and guitarist Ross Stagg, Joe Reed on bass and Noel Scott on keyboards.

Strapps set out their stall with their self-titled debut in 1976. The album was produced by Deep Purple’s Roger Glover at Kingsway Recorders studio, which was owned by Ian Gillan. With LP jackets enough to make Spinal Tap blush, and lyrics to match, despite the permissive era, Strapps found themselves on the wrong end of the feminists, primarily down to an-judged marketing campaign. Regardless, the band turned in four studio albums of solid, bluesy raunch and roll.

Their second album for Harvest Records, ‘Secret Damage’, was released in 1977. Produced by Chris Kinsey (Rolling Stones, Marillion), the album featured the single ‘Child Of The City’. Produced by Pip Williams (Status Quo), their third album ‘Prisoner Of Your Love' was released by Harvest in Japan, where the band had built a loyal following. Strapps’ fourth and final record was 1979’s ‘Ball Of Fire’. Strapps were a solid live proposition, so it makes sense that this set is completed by their 1977 live set at the Rainbow Theatre in London’s Finsbury Park. Strapps called it a day in 1979 when Underwood accepted an offer from Ian Gillan to join the newly formed band Gillan.

Reedycja 2026 kultowego albumu 'The Kindred' brytyjskiej formacji PARIAH to obowiązkowa pozycja dla fanów technicznego thrash metalu, nierozerwalnie związanego z dziedzictwem legendarnych grup Satan oraz Skyclad.
Reedycja 2026 przywraca blask tej zapomnianej perle brytyjskiego grania, łącząc drapieżność riffów z unikalną, mroczną melodyką charakterystyczną dla muzyków z Newcastle.


Satan's evolution finally came to an end here with this moniker, Pariah. What they were going for with Suspended Sentence released under part of Satan's legacy, could definitely be seen as a hint to the direction they'd take as Pariah. That raspy, ill-tempered, aggressive Michael Jackson (indeed) is still here on vocals and these guys really wanted to tear things apart with this release. Yet again, the main lineup here is entirely the same from Satan and Blind Fury (vocalists aside). Simply put, I think you could easily say they took Suspended Sentence's interesting idea of "heavy NWOBHM meets thrash" and basically focused on being even more aggressive this time.

I might be throwing out the obvious here again, but if you're new to Pariah or perhaps Satan and Blind Fury, familiarize yourself with the fact that guitarists Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsey are truly an insane duo. Both have a lot of character to their own styles and at the same time, they manage to blend in everything together perfectly. For the most part with The Kindred here their guitar work is pretty thrashy and extremely melodic. Then out of nowhere those classy NWOBHM solo's, dual harmonies, and majestic melodies come into play all over the place and they manage to make it work incredibly well in between the thrashy antics. The solo's on this album are just something you'd probably never expect to hear on something overly thrashy. Just more proof these guys are definitely creative and highly skillful I'd say.

The production and mix seems to be an improvement over Suspended Sentence, which wasn't bad at all or anything but here the guitars tend to have more of a sharper edge, Jackson's vocals are constantly in the clear and never overpowered by anything else, and overall there's just more of a tougher vibe surrounding this. Everything is pretty damn heavy. Jackson again likes to throw out some rough screams around the place that oddly remind me of Eric Adams, (maybe after he swallowed a little bit of lava or something). While Tippins and Ramsey are really out there in a realm of their own, there's great performances again by Graeme English on bass and Sean Taylor on drums. Overall you've got a whole package of virtuous musicians here that really mastered the beauty of balance.

The Kindred tends to be a little straightforward for the most part but they certainly stir things up with the crazy solo's that are easily a highlight on every single track. The riffs and rhythms as I kind of stated above are very melodic and catchy, not too experimental or odd. But when it comes to some buildups, rhythm changes, and the start of solo's, you'll be pitted in tons of unique originality. Overall The Kindred sticks to its "heavy NWOBHM meets thrash" formula with every track being pretty fast and aggressive. It's a bit hard to explain I guess, you could say the album is a bit more predictable compared to some of their other works but at the same time you just really have to hear how they interestingly play things out. I also think it's really cool that there's a handful of tracks off this that probably could've stemmed from early Satan around their Court In The Act era. Basically, if you took some of these tracks like The Rope, Foreign Bodies, Inhumane, etc, and slowed them down a bit, cleared out the guitar tone, put someone more clean on vocals like former Brian Ross, you'd probably end up with some classy NWOBHM tunes. They've even got those shouts in the background from the other members which was definitely popular in some NWOBHM (hey and then thrash?). Towards the end of the album things do seem to get a bit experimental with tracks like Icons of Hypocrisy and Shows Your Face. The instrumental La Guerra is really great, it's like a sequel to 92nd Symphony from Satan!

In the end, I think one of the biggest highlights for me here is Scapegoat - this song just dominates with amazing riffs and leads, easily one of the more aggressive and darker numbers as well. After a little short dramatic segment (where Jackson actually sounds great with some softer clear vocals) the song completely explodes, an insane twin guitar attack shreds things apart while everyone in the background is going pretty over the top themselves. All the songs that contain solo's like this, where the drums and bass are going crazy at the same time are probably my other favorites like Inhumane, Killing For Company, and Promise of Remembrance. I do have to say the slower soothing leads on Icons of Hypocrisy stand out quite a bit too. Either way, all the solo's here are pretty phenomenal but I think you get the point already! All in all, this is really unique stuff. Everyone knows thrash was somewhat born from NWOBHM, but I think a lot of bands with their earlier releases wanted those influences to be a bit subtle. Not with The Kindred here, Pariah wanted this to literally be "thrashy NWOBHM" and they really made it work. Fans of both thrash and the tougher NWOBHM stuff out there should definitely check this out. Their next release Blaze of Obscurity would prove to be even more creative, not quite as aggressive as this one but it is a little superior I'd say. It's something you really can't classify at all. Satan, Blind Fury, and Pariah all typically made up of the same core members definitely created some timeless and unique heavy metal.

Reedycja 2026 kultowego albumu 'The Kindred' brytyjskiej formacji PARIAH to obowiązkowa pozycja dla fanów technicznego thrash metalu, nierozerwalnie związanego z dziedzictwem legendarnych grup Satan oraz Skyclad.
Reedycja 2026 przywraca blask tej zapomnianej perle brytyjskiego grania, łącząc drapieżność riffów z unikalną, mroczną melodyką charakterystyczną dla muzyków z Newcastle.


Satan's evolution finally came to an end here with this moniker, Pariah. What they were going for with Suspended Sentence released under part of Satan's legacy, could definitely be seen as a hint to the direction they'd take as Pariah. That raspy, ill-tempered, aggressive Michael Jackson (indeed) is still here on vocals and these guys really wanted to tear things apart with this release. Yet again, the main lineup here is entirely the same from Satan and Blind Fury (vocalists aside). Simply put, I think you could easily say they took Suspended Sentence's interesting idea of "heavy NWOBHM meets thrash" and basically focused on being even more aggressive this time.

I might be throwing out the obvious here again, but if you're new to Pariah or perhaps Satan and Blind Fury, familiarize yourself with the fact that guitarists Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsey are truly an insane duo. Both have a lot of character to their own styles and at the same time, they manage to blend in everything together perfectly. For the most part with The Kindred here their guitar work is pretty thrashy and extremely melodic. Then out of nowhere those classy NWOBHM solo's, dual harmonies, and majestic melodies come into play all over the place and they manage to make it work incredibly well in between the thrashy antics. The solo's on this album are just something you'd probably never expect to hear on something overly thrashy. Just more proof these guys are definitely creative and highly skillful I'd say.

The production and mix seems to be an improvement over Suspended Sentence, which wasn't bad at all or anything but here the guitars tend to have more of a sharper edge, Jackson's vocals are constantly in the clear and never overpowered by anything else, and overall there's just more of a tougher vibe surrounding this. Szósta duża płyta niemieckiej załogi grającej agresywny i intensywny grind/death metal!!!


Well, some very good works from the last months of 2016 are arriving for us right now, due the avalanche of releases we have to deal with. To the fans, it's really hard to pay attention to all very good albums that arrive day after day. But you must pay attention the German Death Metal quintet KEITZER. These guys know how to unleash hell, as their new album, called "Ascension", is here to prove.

It's a massive and hazardous attack of brutality, but done with a touch of elegance and good taste (as some melodies and shrieked screams can show on songs as "Ascension"), and a good level of instrumental technique. They can be barely compared to something that KATAKLYSM used to be some years ago, but with a whole different identity. But they can nail you in the wall of your home if you don't take caution with all their musical aggressiveness. It's not merely another Death Metal band, because they use some musical features from Thrash and Black Metal, so, it's a fine work from a great band.

The sound production was done in a way that the balance between the musical aggressiveness of the bands music, the needed amount of clarity between the musical instruments and a great dose of musical weight is almost perfect. It's the right way for their songs, but the drums could have a better sound on the snare drum. The rest is fine.

Their musical shrapnel uses 12 excellent shots to make you surrender to them. But the show of brutality of the bass guitar and drums on "We Will Drown All of You in Blood", the onslaught of killing guitar riffs on "Ascension" (a fast and thunderous song, filled with excellent riffs, and even some melodies in slow parts) and on "Peace Was Never an Option" (if you think that Death Metal way of singing is just a great amount of grunts, pay attention to the vocals' lines here), the insulting and bitter "Vengeance" (another great work from vocals), the oppressive brutality and good taste presented on the tempos of "Conquistador" and "Black Silent Tides", and the violent strike of "Wolves Among Us" can be pointed as their finest moments of the album.
