"The Balkan country of Serbia has been described as bedraggled yet thriving… a place of much beauty that is also war-torn and toxic. Such a perfectly poetic breeding ground for thrash and speed metal, wielded by the landlocked nation’s strongest, KOBOLD.
The band is set to release their third full-length album “Technofascism” on Jackhammer Music and it promises to be their heaviest and most ambitious. No small feat for this trio that has developed a new vicious approach to the metal they love. It is a fresh take on speed and thrash that draws from the elders (Exodus, Mercyful Fate, Anthrax) but forces the music to evolve. Fans will also hear a heavy German influence (Living Death, Kreator). The riffs are fast and brutal, heavy and technical that can at times amaze! Killer drumming, and shredding riffs and bass. On top of that... real live solos that would make Kirk Hammett and Gary Holt proud. Guitars are handled expertly by Elio Rigonat, who also sings with amazing ferocity. He has an uncanny ability to utilize almost three different voices to terrorize the listener, including a higher range John Connelly (Nuclear Assault) attack that really sets him apart. Why do we keep naming all these bands?!?!? Because KOBOLD is difficult to acutely describe, and that’s what makes them great! They’re truly unique and in the ranks of Arch Enemy and Toxic Holocaust. Hellishly great!
“Technofascism” also promises numerous special guests from the Serbian metal, punk and hardcore scene."



After Kobold's first two efforts Death Parade and Masterpace were like night and day, it would be a tragicomic circumstance for the crucial third effort to fade back into mediocrity, especially after the incredible heights reached by the sophomore. Luckily, Elio Rigonat's crew seemed totally unstoppable, by now, after finding its footing. Technofascism, released in 2022, cemented the band's position as one of those so unpredictable they're always, always worth a listen whatever they do... it surely helps that what they do is badass, most of the time.

Now, it's natural to fear some disappointment after a brilliant record, and Technofascism does represent a tiny step below its predecessor, although it isn't meant to say that the band's incredible upward trajectory had suddenly halted, as much as I think Masterpace managed to effectively and awesomely fuck up your mind in a more concise time – but man, we still get a delicious mass of unhinged thrash, extreme influences, electronic elements, manic vocals, and cryptic lyrics. More specifically, the first three songs after the intro are deflagrating. 'Into Purgatory' might not be on par with 'Masterpace', although I'd be hard pressed to find a song that does, but delivers another blow to the listener's head like it's really picking up where said album left off, after having built an awesome intro upon the famous The Warriors sample (although I now feel extremely dumb since I don't remember where else I've already heard it). 'Empire - It Is Us' and 'Soul Cacophony' double down on the matter, arguably ending up amongst their most viscerally angry tracks ever, before abandoning the pure thrash component until 'Death by Life' appears later on, and I won't accept any complaints about a song starting with a South Park sample.

Another point of contention might be the choice of adding several guest vocalists to Rigonat's already histrionic delivery, which might be a bit too much to stomach in some instances – although it definitely has its advantages when he's joined by some lower, guttural growler (like especially 'Empire - It Is Us' showcases brilliantly) – and, most of all, creates an even more stark contrast from song to song, and Kobold aren't exactly one-trick ponies on their own. That also means we get some of their most deranged, schizophrenic material ever, like 'Neosynthesis' employing the 'proper' clean vocals of a post-rock artist alternating with merciless, brutal accelerations, or the demented Satellites-era Celldweller-style electronic intro of 'Seven Tongues of God'. I can't say each and every idea hits the mark, like, I'm not necessarily a fan of the clean vocals used on the otherwise unforgiving 'Virus', nor I was fond of closer 'Ketamine' (which hosts the current Gorgoroth vocalist), and some songs being cut off rather abruptly left a bitter aftertaste after all those cool extended endings on the previous outing – yet, for every episode not winning me over, there are dozens I fell in love with, so this is why I say they always deliver. It's simply hard not to be impressed by their music.

Technofascism is perhaps the Kobold album where the 'avant-garde' tag is most justified, for better or worse. The fact that the guys made a couple of albums that are even better than this one isn't much of a detriment to it, but rather the proof that they deserve to be in the upper echelon of the genre... wait, if we still can consider this thrash?

Na nowym albumie Gogol Bordello, autor tekstów Eugene Hutz postawił sobie za cel połączenie postpunkowych faktur i agresji z nieskrępowanym cygańskim punkiem Gogol Bordello. Aby to osiągnąć, zdecydował się na współpracę z zespołem producenckim Nicka Launaya (Gang of Four, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Idles) i Adama „Atom” Greenspana (Nick Cave, Idles, Flogging Molly).
Wraz ze swoim wieloletnim zespołem stworzyli dwanaście niezwykle mocnych i chwytliwych utworów. Tytułowy utwór, „We Mean It, Man!”, jest pełen punkowej intensywności, której kulminacją jest saksofonowy riff no wave. „No Time For Idiots” to riff-punkowy numer w stylu Strummera/Jonesa z potężnym refrenem. „Life Is Possible Again” wyraża optymizm w obliczu strachu przed wojną na Ukrainie. „Solidarity” to punkowy hymn Cockney Rejects Solidarity, zreinterpretowany przez Bernarda Sumnera z New Order, nawiązujący do działań wojennych na Ukrainie. To jest album i przesłanie polityczne, którego świat potrzebuje teraz.

Kaleko Urdangak to punkowy zespół z Kraju Basków (Hiszpania), który powstał w 2011 roku z inicjatywy członków radiowego programu oi-punkowego Kaleko Mobida. Grupa wywodzi się z Bergary i tworzy muzykę w klimacie Oi!, skinhead rock’n’roll i punka, łącząc surową gitarę z energiczną rytmiką i tekstami śpiewanymi po baskijsku, hiszpańsku i angielsku. Ich debiutancki album Eman Bai! (2012) przyniósł krótkie, energetyczne utwory o tematyce kultury, życia ulicznego i osobistych doświadczeń. W kolejnych latach Kaleko Urdangak kontynuowali działalność wydając kolejne EP-ki i płyty, m.in. Bizirik (2021) oraz EP Haria eten ez dadin (2025), a także występując na koncertach i festiwalach, co ugruntowało ich miejsce na scenie punk-Oi! w Hiszpanii i poza nią. Wstawka zawiera dwie EPki oraz split z zespołem Vis Vires.

Trzeci album mocnej apokaliptycznej crust/grindowej ekipy z Belgii!



Must admit that the 3d album of this one-man project is fucking ripper! I don`t know how, but Wolven managed to create a really wonderful record, and that`s why I want to talk about it today. These 8 songs are highly intense and aggressive, but take them as an antidote against today’s state of the world (war, greed etc). Even the cover of this record has a character that reminds me of a Grim Ripper. I was lucky to have two versions of “War Poisoned Cult”, CD and LP. The CD was released by Japanese Esagoya rec (OBI included) and I received the vinyl from Loner Cult rec. I have no questions, both formats sound great and look fantastic!

I want to highlight the songwriting of this album, all songs sound amazing, and catchy, with great structures and atmosphere. The guitar has a solid tone (nothing outstanding of the genre, but anyway it’s killer), riffs are not as simple as they seem at first glance. Everything here is spiced with gloomy and sad melodies, which emphasizes the doomed theme of war (believe me, war is not fun, and I know what I`m talking about). Drum work is dope, every cymbal sound, beat, and accent… you will hear everything. The vocal is an individual part of this story. Yes, it pissed off, full of aggression… but these screams rather sound like an outcry. This is really well-done stuff!

To be honest, I’m impressed, this word leaves a lot of impressions, and this album makes you think about important questions. I believe, that Wolven achieved his goal with this record.

"Universal" to nowe DVD angielskiego zespołu Anathema. Poprzednio oficjalnie sfilmowane koncerty grupy to "A Moment In Time" i "Were You There?", odpowiednio z 2006 i 2004 roku (ładnie podsumowały okres "A Natural Disaster" i "A Fine Day to Exit"). Od tego czasu minęło kilka ładnych lat, Anathema wydała dwa świetne albumy, zagrała wiele udanych koncertów. Chwilę przed "Universal" (w wakacje) wyszedł album koncertowy bez wideo, o nazwie "Untouchable", który jest skróconym zapisem tego samego występu co "Universal". Teraz dostajemy pełny koncert nagrany na Blu-ray, DVD i 2xCD. Słówko o samym nagraniu - był to jednorazowy pokaz poprzedzający trasę koncertową "Weather Systems", odbył się w Ancient Roman Theatre w Phillippoplis, wraz z Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra. Całość wyreżyserował Lasse Hoile, którego pamiętam z współpracy z Opeth i Porcupine Tree.

Dlaczego prawie w ciemno można było dać "Universal" 8-9 gwiazdek? Trzy główne powody:

1) Anathema to świetny zespół koncertowy. Kto kiedyś był, ten wie o co chodzi. Tyle lat, a nic nie obniżyli swojego poziomu. To po prostu świetni instrumentaliści, obdarzeni niezwykłym talentem kompozytorskim i wykonawczym, a nie marne grajki skaczące po scenie jak małpy. Zawsze perfekcyjnie przygotowani, z dobrą, długą setlistą i doskonałym kontaktem z fanami. Jak się tak zastanowić, to chyba jeden z koncertowo najlepszych rockowych zespołów ostatnich lat. Jeśli w jakimś klubie będzie grała Anathema, to polecam iść w ciemno i zabrać znajomych. Mamy to szczęście, że w Polsce koncertują bardzo często i chętnie.

2) Anathema to perfekcjoniści. Nie tylko chodzi tu o muzyków, ale także osoby wspomagające zespół, ekipę techniczną, producentów, ludzi z wytwórni Kscope - po prostu każdy produkt wychodzący pod szyldem Anathema jest weltklasse. Taki koncert jak Universal to raczej doświadczenie "once in a lifetime", jasne więc jest, że został perfekcyjnie przygotowany - od doboru miejsca, przez sam występ, nagłośnienie, oświetlenie, setlistę, post-produkcję, promocję... Można było tego oczekiwać i tak też się stało. Zresztą spójrzcie tylko na okładkę, genialna!

3) Świetna forma Anathemy w ostatnich latach. Podczas gdy takie zespoły jak Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, The Gathering, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation czy Opeth albo dogorywają, albo mają swoje problemy, tak Anathema dość naturalnie przeszła w rejony alternatywnego, atmosferycznego pop rocka i już ponad 10 lat radzi sobie dobrze, a właściwie coraz lepiej. Mają po prostu niebywały talent w muzycznej dziedzinie i niespiesznie nagrywają równe, interesujące krążki. "We're Here Because We're Here" na początku nie do końca mnie przekonała, ale już za chwilę wielbiłem ten album - podobnie było z nową płytą "Weather Systems". Aż dziw bierze, że jeszcze nie przebili się do tzw. mainstreamu, tworząc z jednej strony art-rockowe perełki, z drugiej strony przystępne, chwytliwe, radiowe killery ("Thin Air", "The Beginning and the End" - na przykład). Chociaż może to i dobrze - jak przystało na poważnych muzyków, nie pchają się w to komercyjne bagno, a i ja niechętnie bym tam ich widział. Mają rzesze starych i nowych fanów oraz szacunek na scenie, który z pewnością bedzie rósł po każdej tak udanej produkcji.



Skończyłem właśnie oglądać moją kopię Blu-ray "Universal". Długi, ponad 2-godzinny koncert zawierający dosłownie wszystko, co chcielibyście zobaczyć i usłyszeć. Jedynym mankamentem jest dla mnie dobór niektórych kawałków - olbrzymi nacisk położono na ostatnie albumy, osobiście zabrakło mi np. "Pressure", "Release" lub "Looking Outside Inside" z mojej ukochanej "A Fine Day To Exit". Nie obraziłbym się także gdyby zagrali "Pitiless" i "Empty" ze starych klasyków. Należy także podkreślić rolę orkiestry - w przeciwieństwie do niektórych zespołów, Anathema korzystała z niej raczej w sposób bardzo subtelny, delikatny, wręcz niezauważalny. Wisienką na torcie jest fantastyczne, akustyczne wykonanie "Fragile Dreams".

Niektórzy mawiają, że Anathema to najlepszy od czasów The Beatles zespół z Liverpoolu. Rodzinny muzyczny klan, jakim stała się Anathema, ma swoje 15 minut sławy. I dobrze. Bardzo dobrze. Świetnie przyjmowane (zarówno przez prasę, fanów i rynek) albumy, trasy koncertowe na wielką skalę, podbijanie „komercyjnych” list sprzedaży. Słowem: Anathema trafiła do mainstreamu. Zdziwiliby się nieco ci nowi fani zespołu, gdyby zapoznali się ze starszą od Weather Systems, We're Here Because We're Here czy A Natural Disaster twórczością zespołu. Doomowe korzenie zespołu gdzieś tam jeszcze przebijają się przez gąszcz orkiestracji, ładnych melodii oraz wokalnych dialogów Lee Douglas/Vincent Cavanagh. Co więcej, Anathema stała się rasowym, wręcz modelowym zespołem koncertowym. Kilkanaście lat temu czytałam wywiad z Danielem Cavanagh, w którym wspominał jak bardzo nie lubią prób i przygotowań do koncertów. Przez te wszystkie lata zmieniło się nie tylko podejście zespołu do wykonywania swej muzyki na żywo, ale i sam zespół. Dojrzalszy, bardziej świadomy swojego potencjału, wykorzystujący do maksimum swoje koncertowe atuty.

Trasa koncertowa promująca Weather Systems była nie tylko sukcesem frekwencyjnym, ale również artystycznym. Świetny dobór materiału, znakomite wykonawstwo, poczucie humoru muzyków zespołu, i... niesamowity kontakt z publicznością wręcz dopraszały się o wizualną pamiątkę z trasy.

Takie wydawnictwo zespół wraz z Lassem Hoile dla swoich fanów przygotował. We wrześniu 2012 roku Anathema wraz z towarzyszeniem filharmoników z Płowdiw zagrała na estradzie antycznego, pochodzącego z II wieku n.e., teatru. O samym obiekcie i mieście można napisać odrębny artykuł. Trakowie na terytorium dzisiejszego Płowdiw założyli osadę, w pełni ufortyfikowaną, którą nazywali Ewmolpia. W 342 roku p.n.e. Filip II (ojciec Aleksandra Wielkiego) zdobywa osadę i nazywa ją Filipopolis. Rzymianie, po zwycięstwach nad Trakami przejęli miasto i rozbudowali je (przy okazji zmieniając nazwę na Trimontium – miasto na trzech wzgórzach). Jednym z zabytków rzymskich jest marmurowy teatr. Przedstawienia teatralne mogło oglądać od 5 do 7 tysięcy widzów (na siedząco). Odkryty został w 1972 roku po przypadkowym osunięciu się ziemi. Amfiteatr częściowo odrestaurowano w drugiej połowie XX wieku. Służy teraz jako miejsce koncertów, przedstawień, projekcji filmowych. Tyle tła historycznego. Wróćmy do koncertowego materiału.

Wszyscy, którzy pojawili się w zeszłym roku na koncertach zespołu, wiedzą jakiego materiału można się na Universal spodziewać. Nie mogli nie zacząć koncertu od dwóch części Untouchable. Tak dobrze brzmiącej Anathemy nie słyszałam nigdy wcześniej. Przez cały koncert ani na chwilę nie spada jakość wykonawstwa. Mogłabym opisywać utwór po utworze, ale po co? Universal jest jak barwna, emocjonalna opowieść, którą należy (a wręcz trzeba) chłonąć w całości. Są na nim momenty tak piękne, emocjonalne, że byłoby nietaktem próbować je opisać (A Simple Mistake, Closer, A Natural Disaster, porywające Flying).

Udział orkiestry w koncercie te emocje jeszcze wzmacnia. Jeszcze bardziej „podkręcone” orkiestracje autorstwa Dave'a Stewarta uwypuklają piękno muzyki zespołu (absolutne mistrzostwo operowania nastrojem w Dreaming Light i The Storm Before The Calm). Uniknięto jednocześnie efektu przesłodzenia i przesytu. Równowaga między grą zespołu, a udziałem orkiestry została na Universal zachowana. Warto pochwalić aranżera, dyrygenta oraz filharmoników za znakomitą robotę. Wiele ciepłych słów można napisać o reżyserze całości, Lassem Hoile. Kto spodziewał się poszatkowanego montażu może się rozczarować. Długie ujęcia, niewiele filtrów oraz graficznych „przeszkadzajek” pomagają widzowi w odbiorze materiału. Najważniejszymi elementami show jest zespół i orkiestra na tle podświetlonych ruin teatru. Scenografia wręcz wymarzona i idealna. Pomimo kilku, naprawdę niewielkich wpadek słucha i ogląda się Universal z wielką przyjemnością. Świetny materiał, odległy o lata świetle od lekko niezbornych DVD Anathemy przygotowanych i wydanych swego czasu przez Metal Mind Productions. Chociaż... i one miały swój urok.

Na okładce DVD widzimy Danny'ego, Vincenta oraz Lee na tle rozgwieżdżonego przez ekrany telefonów komórkowych nieba. The Sky is the limit. Anathema nigdy nie była tak potężna. Kiedy zespół stracił kontrakt, przez lata nie wydawał płyt, nie koncertował, wydawało się, że to już koniec tej frapującej muzycznej opowieści snutej przez braci Cavanagh. Szczęście się jednak do liverpoolczyków uśmiechnęło. Wykorzystali dar od losu po wielokroć. Jak w przypowieści o pomnażaniu talentów.

Ścisła czołówka holenderskiego death metalu!!! Zbiór dwóch klasycznych demówek z 1987 roku: "Dysentry" oraz "The Penance". Jako bonus dodane zostały dwa numery z festiwalu w 1988 roku zagranego u boku KREATOR, DEATH ANGEL, HOLY MOSES, THANATOS... Wkładka zawiera liner notes napisany przez Patricka Mameliego, a utwory zostały zmasterowane przez Dana Swano w Unisound Studios (EDGE OF SANITY, OPETH, HAIL OF BULLETS).

POZYCJA OBOWIĄZKOWA DLA KAŻDEGO FANA DEATH METALU!!!



In the last few years, there has been a great resurrection of old school death metal bands. Death has come back as Death To All, playing all the old classics in tribute to the late, great, Chuck Schuldiner; Obituary have just released one of the greatest albums of their career; the last few Deicide albums have been fantastic (in my humble opinion); and we have had an album from new on the scene Gruesome, which is pure Death worship and to be honest, bloody amazing. With this rebirth comes The Dysentery Penance, from Pestilence. A remastered compilation of the first two demos from the Dutch death metal legends which earned them the attention of Roadrunner Records. Given the nature of the album, and the difference in sound from the two demos, I feel the best way to review this album would be to tackle it in two parts.

So we have the first four tracks, which are from the Dysentery demo originally released in 1987. There are few complaints about these tracks to be had – each song is a well written slab of Slayerinfluenced Old School death metal. Against The Innocent has an atmospheric, synthy into to start the album, before the blast beats and wounded shrieks of Patrick Mameli spew forth from the speakers. A reasonably catchy chorus and a pair of chaotic guitar solos are definitely the highlights of this track. Delirical Life opens with an infectious groove that demands you bang your head along, and then the thrashy, blasty, death metal riffs kick in and lead us to another brief chaos-fuelled solo, before we are thrust back into the realm of the groove laden riffs. Delirical Life is definitely a highlight of the album for anyone that likes solid riffs to bang your head along to.

Traitors Gate and Throne of Death are two solid, extremely enjoyable songs, and we also are gifted with the vocals taking on a much harsher, more modern sounding scream in places. A fair few guitar solos and a motherload of blindingly good riffs can be found in these tracks, and they are definitely two of the best from the album. The first four songs here basically sound like early Death with a bunch of Slayer riffs – and let’s face it, who doesn’t love Death, and who doesn’t love Slayer? Yeah, exactly. The only complaint I can possibly think of here is the production quality – the drums and vocals are very much in the forefront here, leading to many of the riffs being buried in the wall of noise (and what even is bass?). Other than that, a solid first half!

Then we come into the territory of The Penance demo, also released in 1987. I love the idea of the intro, Into Hades, I do, but the tone of the guitars and the screeching feedback just really grated on me and I’m rather glad it was over in less than a minute. But that was over quickly, and we get to hear Before the Penance, which makes the pain of Into Hades completely worth it – if there isn’t even a hint of your finger tapping, or your head bobbing (or, preferably, violently banging and scaring the mother-loving shit out of everyone on your bus… Or is that just me?) then you have deep, deep problems that must be addressed, there is just so much groove! Martin Van Duren’s vocals begin far, far too clean for this release however. A good vocalist for sure, but his singing (and it is just that, singing) is far too clean and lacking the piss and vinegar we heard from Patrick Mameli during the first half of the album. However, when Pestilence decide to trade in the groove on this track for blast beats and outrageous riffing, Van Duren’s vocals take the venomous turn it needs and all is right with the world.

This venom is largely continued throughout the rest of his portion of the album, and is far, far better suited for the music than his, while talented, out-of-place singing. Affection and Fight the Plague slap us in the face with another handful of guitar solos, and riffs heavy enough to make even Mr Schwarzenegger do a double take. The brief piano section at the end of Fight the Plague is also worth a note, but could have been longer, I feel. The production on this portion of the album is absolutely leaps and bounds ahead of the first half, making these songs slightly more enjoyable.

The album comes along with two live tracks as well, renditions of Before the Penance and Fight the Plague, from Pestilence’s set at the Metal Attack festival in Eibergen, 1988, where they appeared with Kreator, Holy Moses and Death Angel (among others). While it is cool to hear such awesome tracks played live, the sound quality of these recordings is so poor that they could have been left off without the album suffering.

So, what’s the verdict? Thrashy, fast, groovey old school death metal that is on the whole a very fun listen! However, the album does feel inconsistent with the change in vocalists and production at the half way point, and the live tracks are largely unnecessary due to the poor sound quality. But if you are a fan of old school death metal, or Pestilence in general, this is still a worthy purchase.

In the last few years, there has been a great resurrection of old school death metal bands. Death has come back as Death To All, playing all the old classics in tribute to the late, great, Chuck Schuldiner; Obituary have just released one of the greatest albums of their career; the last few Deicide albums have been fantastic (in my humble opinion); and we have had an album from new on the scene Gruesome, which is pure Death worship and to be honest, bloody amazing. With this rebirth comes The Dysentery Penance, from Pestilence. A remastered compilation of the first two demos from the Dutch death metal legends which earned them the attention of Roadrunner Records. Given the nature of the album, and the difference in sound from the two demos, I feel the best way to review this album would be to tackle it in two parts.

So we have the first four tracks, which are from the Dysentery demo originally released in 1987. There are few complaints about these tracks to be had – each song is a well written slab of Slayerinfluenced Old School death metal. Against The Innocent has an atmospheric, synthy into to start the album, before the blast beats and wounded shrieks of Patrick Mameli spew forth from the speakers. A reasonably catchy chorus and a pair of chaotic guitar solos are definitely the highlights of this track. In 2009, the Triton venue (near Paris, France) was sold out to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Univers Zero, an iconic band of the Rock In Opposition movement. These two exceptional concerts highlighted a radical and unique style of music, at the crossroads of new music and chamber rock, skilfully blending acoustic and electric instruments, as heard on the cult album 'Ceux du Dehors'.

Around Daniel Denis (drums, composition), Michel Berckmans (oboe,
bassoon), and Andy Kirk (keyboards and guitar), three historical figures of the group, complemented by four other talented musicians, offered an intense multimedia show, intertwining a condensed version of key pieces from the repertoire with more recent compositions. These concerts were part of a key phase in which the band offered one of its most accomplished line-ups, taking the opportunity to establish its sound and image.
The line-up had undergone a few changes since its reformation in 2004, with Pierre Chevalier (from the band Présent) and a new bassist joining the ensemble. This highlight has now resulted in the release of a live CD, a precious testimony to the band's artistic resurgence and stage energy.

Univers Zero represents one of the longest-living bands in Belgium. It was established in 1974. Drummer Daniel Denis had the brilliant idea to gather together a team of professionals sharing the same taste for music. The band has adopted an instrumental progressive style. Over the last couple of decades, the band has also implemented a series of influences from chamber music - most commonly, chamber music from the 20th century. Even if the line-up changes a lot over the years, the overall sound of UZ remained fairly consistent.
