Pierwszy album francuskiego zespołu grającego kompleksowy progresywny death metal dla fanów GORGUTS, TRIPTYKON, ULCERATE, EMPTINESS, MESHUGGAH, PORTAL, DISKORD, AKERCOCKE, GOJIRA, SUMAC, DEATHSPELL OMEGA, ALTARS, CHAOS ECHOES.

Niezwykle ciężki album. Niesamowity, atmosferyczny death metal, który brzmi, jakby miał nas wszystkich ZMIAŻDŻYĆ...


So many easily shattered doorways beyond surface level heavy and/or extreme music exist that it would seem they all gnash for the crumbs of a smaller, but admittedly more lucrative, fleeting space in the minds of the uninitiated. A half-dead planet full of frustrated phone-gripping mutants represent a huge pile of potential recipients for the deeply shaded gradient that grows between accessible alt-metal innovation and popular modern heavy metal. As I grow older a darker blurred cynicism grows within me with every passing year as the bands that survive through mass influence continue to twinkle in the eyes of new waves of musicians. I didn’t contribute to the success of Gojira nor Meshuggah and even they show some marked embarrassment for the clones spawned from their detritus. To wear these influences outwardly typically riles up a spitting frenzy of limbs and curses from my side of the room yet the self-titled debut EP from Grenoble, France progressive death metal band Barús in 2015 appeared entirely inoffensive and solidly entertaining at the time. In many ways that EP was a way back through to the other side, an angle giving nods to a more accessible style but with a damned seriousness that appeared to avoid populist intentions.

In piecing together the ambitions of their experimental death metal sound within a full-length format Barús offer a structurally complex death metal album that bridges the adventurous spirit of earlier (pre-‘From Mars to Sirius’) Gojira with Gorguts‘ ‘Obscura’ using the atmospheric ripples of turn of the century Immolation to fill in the gaps. It is a curious piece to dive into because there is as much ‘The Link’ as there is influence from Arkhon Infaustus (or even DeathSpell Omega‘s least orthodox momentum) and I haven’t yet mentioned the nigh post-rock feeling atmospheric elements (see: “Engorge”, “Amass”) that actually works remarkably well in terms of providing variety and fluidity. How can this possibly be palatable? By virtue of a heavy attraction to discordant and unique progressive death metal, admittedly.

There is a remarkable middle ground struck on ‘Drowned’ that favors the darker side of things. It isn’t relentlessly slapped like an Ulcerate record nor is it outwardly complex and unhinged as anything by Diskord or Portal but if ‘Obscura’ was a high watermark for you, this provides a distant rhythmic cousin that just slightly extends the concept and trades the early 90’s death metal climate for a warmed over modernity. In fact the production sound and guitar tone are almost too illustriously captured on ‘Drowned’ without the noxious clangor of any of the bands that influenced Barús to fill a sort of ‘abrasion quota’ expected from this type of technicality. It is both refreshing in tone and only slightly disappointing in terms of ‘riffs versus compelling rhythms’.

To say that ‘Drowned’ was a grower only suggests that my expectations were set low at the mention of certain bands I’ve already mentioned. Once I had immersed myself within Barús‘ darkness-bearing tones the effect was not unlike my early experiences with ‘Unholy Cult’ where closer listening revealed complexity and worthwhile dynamic but never completely outdid those opening moments. It would appear that the band are cognizant of the need to lean towards death metal yet they repeatedly rely on dry (bland) riffing for transitions within several tracks (see: “Vitiate”) and this flattens a few very intense moments that would have otherwise been true peaks of interest for the full listen. “Perpetrate” was compelling in that it begins sounding like a stronger track from Sepultura‘s ‘Against’ were it performed by early 2000’s Ulcerate, this sort of moment fluctuated in value with successive listens and made it somewhat difficult to decide how I felt about the bigger picture of Barús‘ debut.

Ultimately I found my horizons slightly expanded by ‘Drowned’ as the rhythmic flow of the record had more to offer once I shut off the part of my brain that is programmed to be repulsed but the esoteric downtuned chug-tone that characterized the early 2000’s popular metal landscape. Between the soggy, crawling riffs and gasped vocals is a worthwhile listen but at no point does it offer more than its influences despite how incredibly polished the overall curation of elements and atmospherically sensitive arrangements is. As an impossibly heavy and twisted chugging beast Barús‘ debut is admirably focused and intense and I can recommend it with a reasonable amount of enthusiasm. I don’t believe it is varied or compelling enough to transcend influences but the ride from Point A to Point B is captivating and takes quite a few unexpected turns despite feeling linear as an experience. If you are fairly orthodox within your death metal tastes and approach this sort of thing with trepidation I would suggest previewing “Dissever” as it is (more or less) the most outside-the-box composition to test your boundaries with. Despite some personal vacillation with interest to the simpler guitar work, I can highly recommend this album.

Since the dawn of the Paleolithic age, mankind has recorded spectacular scenes of death, whether in scenes of cannibal feasts crudely etched on cave walls, massacres immortalized in glyphs adorning monuments of the ancient kingdoms, or in chance recordings of grisly accidents, compiled and sold on home video to those with a thirst for that which is denied to them by our "civilized" society. Spawned in the contaminated sewers of Santa Cruz, California in 2013, Dipygus began as a four-piece mutation performing rudimentary styles of Death Metal, a sonic evolution of the tradition continued from the time of Cro-Magnons.

A 2015 demo recording, the earliest surviving documentation of the band, reveled in unexplained and bizarre events, including peculiar methods of whale carcass disposal and otherworldly monsters from on and off the silver-screen. After a lineup change in 2016, Dipygus recorded the "Long Pig Feast" EP, which featured terrifying rites, ritual mutilations and ominous sightings of a Mesozoic relic in the heart of the Congo. Their debut album, "Deathooze", slowly de-composed in the murky shallows of powerplant runoff in the Monterey Bay, ultimately being recorded in 2018. Though quickly banned in over 16 countries, Dipygus´ debut album attracted immediate attention among slime fetishists and similarly deviant circles. Placed appropriately alongside the Fiji mermaids and other grotesque artefacts found in curio cabinets of modern-day antiquarians, "Deathooze" continued the band´s exploration of inexplicable incidents, mysterious beasts and shocking carnage, including genuine audio recovered from a fatal attack at the hands of an ape gone mad! Following their debut album, Dipygus was conjoined with an additional member, and began a new exploration in search of secrets hidden in the jungles of lost continents, where life is cheap. After successful initiation into the shadowy world of black-market cuisine, an agreement was reached with Memento Mori for the release of the band´s second full-length, "Bushmeat". Showcasing more exotic and repulsive themes of the supernatural and taboo, "Bushmeat" presented an uncensored and unrelenting spectacle, with each element of the previous work irresponsibly taken to a further extreme. A prime cut of raw and grueling terror, it was fit for consumption by headhunters, body-snatchers, toad-venom junkies, cargo cultists, aquatic ape theorists, disaster tourists, carriers of tropical disease, voodoo practitioners and orgone revivalists only. All others having since been warned, Dipygus return to time primordial with an elegantly self-titled third album. Suitably graced with evocative cover art courtesy of Hayden Hall, Dipygus thrusts the helpless listener into a psychedelic jungle of grisly delights. At 10 songs in 41 minutes, the quartet qualify their most lengthy recording yet with maximum delirium and characteristically crushing execution.

Everything here feels massive -tone, feel, supernatural aura- yet somehow simultaneously exhibits a spacious quality that´s unsettling to the Nth degree. Perhaps that´s due to Dipygus´ increasingly twisted songwriting, neither "tech" nor improvisatory, but a certain "elevated caveman" aspect that pushes primitivism toward mind-bending ends. Fleeting-yet-haunting leads also play a part in Dipygus´ menagerie of malodorousness, exacerbating the psychotic reactions in their humid, hellish jungle, and even touches of way-back synths get mangled within, melting into the fuckton heaviness of Dipygus´ riffing. Counterbalancing technical death metal with brutal death elements, Orphalis may have found the perfect stylistic balance for the kind of music they are playing on their fourth full length which is astonishingly fluid given its dynamic and multifaceted nature. Their structuring is intuitive and yet unpredictable which keeps things both engaging and exciting. Moreover, with their knack of providing standout parts in each of the songs when you least expect it, it's impossible not to remain awestruck. In addition to the myriad music patterns that are equally matched by phenomenally diverse vocals, they are able to inject melodic bits and even searing solos into the music for added emphasis, all of which only enhances the auditory experience each time. Trwający blisko 80 minut, kapitalny i bezcenny od strony historycznej album, zawierający unikalny występ The Beatles (z Ringo Starrem na perkusji) zarejestrowany w legendarnym hamburskim klubie w ostatnim tygodniu grudnia 1962 roku. Mający już na koncie wydany przez EMI singiel "Love Me Do" zespół musiał odegrać/odpracować zakontraktowane dużo wcześniej występy i jest to muzyczna rozkosz dla każdego fana Wspaniałej Czwórki!

Oprócz kilku kawałków znanych choćby z nagranego już miesiąc potem LP "Please Please Me", grupa wykonała sporo popowych i rockandrollowych standardów. Jakość dźwięku jest bardzo dobra (nieco lepsza niż na oryginalnych, wydanych po raz pierwszy w 1977 roku płytach), choć nie idealna, ale wszystko świetnie słychać! CD zawiera niepublikowany na płycie, niemal maniakalny "My Girl Is Red Hot", a także (jako bonus) "Money" w wykonaniu towarzyszącej Beatlesom grupy King Size Taylor And The Dominoes. Płyta chyba nigdy nie ukaże się oficjalnie, gdyż w wyniku wieloletnich działań The Beatles, wyrokiem sądu została wycofana z muzycznego rynku.

Mający już na koncie wydany przez EMI singiel "Love Me Do" zespół musiał odegrać/odpracować zakontraktowane dużo wcześniej występy i jest to muzyczna rozkosz dla każdego fana Wspaniałej Czwórki!

Oprócz kilku kawałków znanych choćby z nagranego już miesiąc potem LP "Please Please Me", grupa wykonała sporo popowych i rockandrollowych standardów. Jakość dźwięku jest bardzo dobra (nieco lepsza niż na oryginalnych, wydanych po raz pierwszy w 1977 roku płytach), choć nie idealna, ale wszystko świetnie słychać! CD zawiera niepublikowany na płycie, niemal maniakalny "My Girl Is Red Hot", a także (jako bonus) "Money" w wykonaniu towarzyszącej Beatlesom grupy King Size Taylor And The Dominoes. Płyta chyba nigdy nie ukaże się oficjalnie, gdyż w wyniku wieloletnich działań The Beatles, wyrokiem sądu została wycofana z muzycznego rynku.

Dziś dużo się dyskutuje o widoczności kobiet w punku, zwłaszcza na scenie, a nie tylko przed nią. W 1980 roku nie było chyba wątpliwości, że punk jest również tworzony przez kobiety i dla kobiet. Przynajmniej w Niemczech...

Jednym z najgorętszych i najbardziej utytułowanych zespołów punkowych był HANS-A-PLAST z Hanoweru. W ich składzie grali Annette Benjamin, potężna wokalistka o niesamowitej charyzmie scenicznej, Renate Baumgart na basie i Bettina Schröder na perkusji.
Jens Meyer i Klaus-Michael Polten grali na gitarach; oboje założyli wpływową wytwórnię No Fun, Hollow Skai, aby zapewnić zespołowi niezależność artystyczną.

2 lipca 1980 roku HANS-A-PLAST wystąpił w Studiu A stacji WDR w Kolonii, gdzie wykonał zestaw najlepszych utworów, zaczynając od „Rock'n Roll Freitag”, a kończąc na wszystkich quasi-przebojach, takich jak „Für 'ne Frau”, „Polizeiknüppel”, „Lederhosentyp”, „Spielfilm”, „Es brennt” i „Hau ab du stinkst”.
Dzięki drogiej technologii telewizyjnej powstało najwyższej jakości nagranie na żywo, a i materiał filmowy również został zachowany – niemal cud, ponieważ do lat 90. nadawcy często wyrzucali takie 'stare badziewie'.

Członkowie zespołu pochodzili z przedmieść Chicago, z Lake Forest i Lake Bluff. Zespół Bachs istniał przez 3 lata, występując na szkolnych potańcówkach, w klubach młodzieżowych i na prywatnych imprezach na północnym wybrzeżu Chicago i okolicznych przedmieściach (zazwyczaj zarabiając 150-200 dolarów za noc). Wszystkie utwory napisali Blake Allison i John Peterman, a płyta została wydana prywatnie w 1968 roku. Po wydaniu płyty członkowie zespołu postanowili zakończyć karierę muzyczną i postanowili skupić się na swoim życiu.
