Jeśli ktoś zapyta mnie o mój ulubiony zespół Gene’a Palubickiego obecnie, bez wahania wskażę na Hexorcist. Wielbię ich od debiutu, który ukazał się pięć lat temu ze znaczkiem Godz ov War Productions. No i teraz kwartet uderza ponownie.

I cóż, materiał znów ukazuje się u Grega, jako fantastycznie wydana taśma, a do tego dla tych, którzy nie oddają hołdu magnetofonowemu diabłu – również dzięki Invictus Productions. Tyle kronikarskich bzdetów, przejdźmy do muzyki – a ta jest kurewsko doskonała. Nie zmieniła się stylistycznie ani na jotę – i to jest jej największa zaleta. Hexorcist jest emanacją oldschoolowego death/thrash metalu, ze zdecydowanym wskazaniem na pierwszy z członów. To moja trzecia recenzja dokonań tej grupy i po raz trzeci muszę wymienić najdonioślejsze z nazw – Angelcorpse, Morbid Angel, Possessed, Dark Angel… Weźcie z nich co najlepsze: agresję, szaleństwo, diabelstwo, technikę, feeling. Powstanie z tego Hexorcist. Nie potrafię siedzieć na dupie spokojnie, gdy leci ich muzyka – „Crucificial Imprecations” jest na to po prostu kolejnym dowodem.

Na tym krążku wszystko składa się na wspaniały hołd dla przełomu lat osiemdziesiątych i dziewięćdziesiątych. O muzyce już powiedziałem – dwójka Hexorcist jest jak skok w tamte lata. Również formalnie ten zespół totalnie dowozi pod tym kątem. Ten krążek jest raczej krótki, ma tylko osiem numerów i trwa pół godziny, podczas gdy dziś mam wrażenie że zespoły nie chcą nagrywać tak krótkich albumów. Ba, Hexorcist nawet nagrał kawałek „Hexorcist” i nie wiem dlaczego, ale takie rzeczy również kojarzą mi się cholernie z czymś niedzisiejszym. No i okładka – żadne tam jebane AI, ale też nie masowo produkowane czarnobiałe frontcovery. Nie powiem, że to truchło na koniu z front coveru to „maskotka” zespołu, natomiast chyba coś jest na rzeczy i ta spójność okładek nie jest na pewno przypadkowa.

Jeszcze słowo o formacie – oczywiście najpierw trafiło do mnie promo cyfrowe, natomiast niedawno otworzyłem przesyłkę od Godz ov War Productions i oczom mym (i Waszym, boście byli świadkami), ukazała się cudnej urody taśma. Cała zadrukowana, z długaśną rozkładówką – warta każdych pieniędzy, nie tylko z sentymentu. Jeśli jesteście maniakami kaset, koniecznie piszcie na Kobyłkę po swoją kopię.

Tyle peanów. Hexorcist potęgą jest i basta. Dla każdego, kto tęskni za wspaniałymi latami, gdy rodziła się ekstrema, te dźwięki będą niczym za przeproszeniem biblia. Na kolana!

Troszkę wody w rzece upłynęło od chwili wydania bardzo dobrego debiutu Amerykanów. Z drugiej strony, te pięć lat minęło jak z chuja strzelił, i oto mamy następcę „Evil Reaping Death”. W międzyczasie zespół przepoczwarzył się personalnie, a konkretnie na wokalach pojawił się Gienek Palubicki, choć zastanawiam się dlaczego pod nazwiskiem własnym, a nie jako Hexorcist V. Myślę, że poniekąd magia nazwiska miała na celu zwiększenie zainteresowania zespołem, zwłaszcza że ten zasłużonej atencji chyba nie osiągnął. No ale przejdźmy do meritum. Hexorcist to twór, który mocno czerpie ze spuścizny Morbid Angel, o czym zresztą wspomniałem przedstawiając wam ich wcześniejsze materiały. „Crucificial Imprecations” jest prostolinijną kontynuacją stylu opartego na wspomnianych stylu. Zaznaczam, że mówimy o rozwijaniu pewnego wzorca, a nie bezpośrednim kopiowaniu, tym bardziej, że na „dwójce” sposób interpretacji własnej znanych klasyków został odrobinę urozmaicony. Poza oczywistymi konotacjami melodycznymi z ekipą Treya i spółki, na nowych nagraniach pojawia się więcej solówek mocniej kojarzących się z Nocturnus. Acz z drugiej strony nie wiem, czy to wrażenie nie jest u mnie spowodowane faktem, iż kilka dni temu odszedł od nas pan Browning, a przy tej okazji jego dyskografię sobie odświeżałem. Drugą sprawą jest brzmienie. Jakby bardziej surowe w porównaniu do debiutu. Nie powiem, że demówkowe, ale noszące takie znamiona. W każdym razie stuprocentowo organiczne, z celowymi chyba drobnymi niedociągnięciami. Pod względem muzyki sprawa jest raczej wiadoma. Zastanawiam się tylko, czy dokooptowany na wokal Gene miał jakiś, choćby drobny wpływ na ostateczny wpływ kompozycji. Osobiście stawiałbym na „tak”, bo „Crucificial Imprecations” ma w sobie też drobne zalążki Angelcorpse, albo może bardziej Perdition temple, czyli stylu będącego wypadkową obu klasycznych ekip. Album ten nie należy do odkrywczych, bardziej odkrywkowych. Nie umniejsza to bynajmniej jego jakości. Moim zdaniem Hexorcist to jedni z najbardziej utalentowanych spadkobierców tego, co zrodziło się na Florydzie jakieś czterdzieści lat temu. Jeśli czerpać od najlepszych, do dokładnie w takim stylu jak oni. A konsekwencję obranego przez zespół stylu widać w tym przypadku nawet po okładce. I to chyba wystarczy za cały komentarz do tej płyty. Bo nad czym się tu niby rozwodzić?

Having never heard of this band before grabbing the promo because it looked cool, I’m certainly glad I took a chance here, because Hexorcist are firm worshippers of the olden style of death metal when it was still in its infancy stages. I love the olde sound, and Crucificial Imprecations is exactly that: half an hour of no-nonsense, evil sounding death metal that I can easily see sitting beside Sijjin on the modern pantheon of actual old-school sounding death metal bands instead of the flagrant use of the genre label that Rate Your Music likes to perpetuate as “OSDM” when in reality these bands don’t sound anything like how the TRVE old school death metal bands used to sound. Crucificial Imprecations delivers exactly what I look for when I reach for this sound, and they do it in such a trim runtime.

And no wonder Hexorcist have that old sound, because they have the legendary Gene Palubicki (Angelcorpse, Perdition Temple, Malefic Throne, many more) at the helm. There’s no corny intros on Crucificial Imprecations, only a brief build-up in the first and second tracks before it’s an all-out riff assault. I’m a big fan in particular how menacing this is from front to back, with Palubicki’s trademark evil rasps in conjunction with the absolutely pulse-pounding blasts and evil sounding riffs. There’s no real highlight track here, as all of them are absolutely feral sounding and could have been lost relics from the early age of death metal had this not been a current year release. Everyone does top-notch work on Crucificial Imprecations, and this album as a whole exudes a pervading menace like that of a shark circling its prey before going in for the kill.

Hexorcist has wowed me. I’m a huge fan of what they’re doing, as I love this particular style of death metal, and while it won’t be making my year-end list, it’s just good solid headbanging chaos that makes me want to listen again. This ain’t your “traditional” old school death metal like what collective review sites would want you to believe, but instead it’s an actual relic that could have been released in the late 1980s or early 1990s amongst the first wave of death metal acts, much like Sijjin, and delivers its vitriolic hymns with the fervor I expect and want from an album that sounds like this. I absolutely recommend this.

Aeons Burning


Five years ago, Hexorcist released one of my favourite death metal records of the 2020s, entitled “Evil Reaping Death“. As such, I was delighted to hear of its successor, which will be released by Invictus Productions and Godz of War Productions on 31st July.

An ominous introduction sets the morbid mood for the carnage ahead, swelling before erupting into chaotic death metal fury. The savagery of the riffs and pulverising drums entwine with whammy abuse and maniacal vocals to give the purified late 80s death metal onslaught that Hexorcist have built their sound around. Once again, they have utilised a classic-sounding production that allows every instrument to not only be heard but felt. The spaces between them give rusted breezes of decay to allow each sanguineous note to be digested. If you’re bored of death metal being mid to low tempos with super low tunings but not much aggression, Hexorcist will have you poised for punishment. From the swooping fills to the vicious leads, cutting bass lines, and consistently barbarous guitar riffs, there is no weakness in the invocations of “Crucificial Imprecations”, which starts off as it means to go on – with a nuclear metal attack.

Twisted passages of deity-defacing death-thrash armageddon permeate the unrelenting chaos and offer these discomforting atmospheres without a moment of mercy or respite. Crank the evil and sadistic up to eleven and feed it on a diet of the most lethal death and thrash metal of the 80s, and you can imagine roughly what Hexorcist sounds like, although be warned; they are neither predictable nor adhere to any conventions but the upholding of diabolical might. There is not even a slither of fat to trim; this is not one of those bloated records where you are wondering why it has to be so long. Hexorcist do not allow even a second of music to make the cut if it isn’t absolutely perfect for the album. From those bursts of bestial fierceness to the more grooving whiplash hooks, you will not be spared for even a moment of this annihilating opus.

Remember the likes of “Show No Mercy”, “Bloody Vengeance”, “Altars of Madness”, “Seven Churches”, “INRI” and those other records that were the pinnacle of evil? Remember how they might have been death, black, thrash or some other constellation of metallic warfare that often wove it all together before pigeonholing and homogeny became the name of the game? Hexorcist nails that wild, unbridled and most hostile blend of their influences in such a way that feels truly authentic and feral. With razor-sharp musicianship that keeps all of the low end gut-wrenching while the malicious guitars cut like blades, allowing the skull to be caved in by indomitable drums. Not to mention the voracious hunger for carnage in the vocal department. This is a record without weakness that shows no mercy nor quarter and most importantly never falters in its consistent morbid majesty.

A rapturous invocation of pure death metal excellence. The magick of this primordial evil is to the point and yet expansive with technicality and precision, delivering total mania. A vicious and unforgiving half an hour of death metal that summons the ancient spirits of Morbid Angel, Sadistic Intent, Angelcorpse, Necrovore, Possessed, and more. A truly impeccable follow-up to one of the best debuts of the 2020s. Submit to the power from hell and unleash the macabre with Hexorcist’s ripping and ruthless new record.

Osobiście stawiałbym na „tak”, bo „Crucificial Imprecations” ma w sobie też drobne zalążki Angelcorpse, albo może bardziej Perdition temple, czyli stylu będącego wypadkową obu klasycznych ekip. Album ten nie należy do odkrywczych, bardziej odkrywkowych. Nie umniejsza to bynajmniej jego jakości. Moim zdaniem Hexorcist to jedni z najbardziej utalentowanych spadkobierców tego, co zrodziło się na Florydzie jakieś czterdzieści lat temu. Jeśli czerpać od najlepszych, do dokładnie w takim stylu jak oni. A konsekwencję obranego przez zespół stylu widać w tym przypadku nawet po okładce. I to chyba wystarczy za cały komentarz do tej płyty. Bo nad czym się tu niby rozwodzić?

Having never heard of this band before grabbing the promo because it looked cool, I’m certainly glad I took a chance here, because Hexorcist are firm worshippers of the olden style of death metal when it was still in its infancy stages. I love the olde sound, and Crucificial Imprecations is exactly that: half an hour of no-nonsense, evil sounding death metal that I can easily see sitting beside Sijjin on the modern pantheon of actual old-school sounding death metal bands instead of the flagrant use of the genre label that Rate Your Music likes to perpetuate as “OSDM” when in reality these bands don’t sound anything like how the TRVE old school death metal bands used to sound. Crucificial Imprecations delivers exactly what I look for when I reach for this sound, and they do it in such a trim runtime.

And no wonder Hexorcist have that old sound, because they have the legendary Gene Palubicki (Angelcorpse, Perdition Temple, Malefic Throne, many more) at the helm. There’s no corny intros on Crucificial Imprecations, only a brief build-up in the first and second tracks before it’s an all-out riff assault. I’m a big fan in particular how menacing this is from front to back, with Palubicki’s trademark evil rasps in conjunction with the absolutely pulse-pounding blasts and evil sounding riffs. There’s no real highlight track here, as all of them are absolutely feral sounding and could have been lost relics from the early age of death metal had this not been a current year release. Everyone does top-notch work on Crucificial Imprecations, and this album as a whole exudes a pervading menace like that of a shark circling its prey before going in for the kill.

Hexorcist has wowed me. I’m a huge fan of what they’re doing, as I love this particular style of death metal, and while it won’t be making my year-end list, it’s just good solid headbanging chaos that makes me want to listen again. This ain’t your “traditional” old school death metal like what collective review sites would want you to believe, but instead it’s an actual relic that could have been released in the late 1980s or early 1990s amongst the first wave of death metal acts, much like Sijjin, and delivers its vitriolic hymns with the fervor I expect and want from an album that sounds like this. I absolutely recommend this.

Five years ago, Hexorcist released one of my favourite death metal records of the 2020s, entitled “Evil Reaping Death“. As such, I was delighted to hear of its successor, which will be released by Invictus Productions and Godz of War Productions on 31st July.

An ominous introduction sets the morbid mood for the carnage ahead, swelling before erupting into chaotic death metal fury. The savagery of the riffs and pulverising drums entwine with whammy abuse and maniacal vocals to give the purified late 80s death metal onslaught that Hexorcist have built their sound around. Once again, they have utilised a classic-sounding production that allows every instrument to not only be heard but felt. The spaces between them give rusted breezes of decay to allow each sanguineous note to be digested. If you’re bored of death metal being mid to low tempos with super low tunings but not much aggression, Hexorcist will have you poised for punishment. From the swooping fills to the vicious leads, cutting bass lines, and consistently barbarous guitar riffs, there is no weakness in the invocations of “Crucificial Imprecations”, which starts off as it means to go on – with a nuclear metal attack.

Twisted passages of deity-defacing death-thrash armageddon permeate the unrelenting chaos and offer these discomforting atmospheres without a moment of mercy or respite. Crank the evil and sadistic up to eleven and feed it on a diet of the most lethal death and thrash metal of the 80s, and you can imagine roughly what Hexorcist sounds like, although be warned; they are neither predictable nor adhere to any conventions but the upholding of diabolical might. There is not even a slither of fat to trim; this is not one of those bloated records where you are wondering why it has to be so long. Hexorcist do not allow even a second of music to make the cut if it isn’t absolutely perfect for the album. From those bursts of bestial fierceness to the more grooving whiplash hooks, you will not be spared for even a moment of this annihilating opus.

Remember the likes of “Show No Mercy”, “Bloody Vengeance”, “Altars of Madness”, “Seven Churches”, “INRI” and those other records that were the pinnacle of evil? Remember how they might have been death, black, thrash or some other constellation of metallic warfare that often wove it all together before pigeonholing and homogeny became the name of the game? Hexorcist nails that wild, unbridled and most hostile blend of their influences in such a way that feels truly authentic and feral. With razor-sharp musicianship that keeps all of the low end gut-wrenching while the malicious guitars cut like blades, allowing the skull to be caved in by indomitable drums. Not to mention the voracious hunger for carnage in the vocal department. This is a record without weakness that shows no mercy nor quarter and most importantly never falters in its consistent morbid majesty.

A rapturous invocation of pure death metal excellence. The magick of this primordial evil is to the point and yet expansive with technicality and precision, delivering total mania. A vicious and unforgiving half an hour of death metal that summons the ancient spirits of Morbid Angel, Sadistic Intent, Angelcorpse, Necrovore, Possessed, and more. A truly impeccable follow-up to one of the best debuts of the 2020s. Submit to the power from hell and unleash the macabre with Hexorcist’s ripping and ruthless new record.

Really fantastic sounds from The Action – a set that maybe has them stepping a bit from mod to psych, but still with all the catchier elements of their earlier work! There's a very open-minded set of production going on here – a bit like the shift that Small Faces took with Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, but without the sillier sides of that record – and the simple lineup of guitar-based instrumentation somehow hits this richer sense of majesty – maybe a bit like The Hollies' shifting their sound at a similar point. Reg King is wonderful on vocals, really bringing a subtle edge to the music – and titles include "Icarus", "Love Is All", "Strange Roads", "Brain", "I'm A Stranger", "Look At The View", "Climbing Up The Wall", "Come Around", and "In My Dream". CD features 22 tracks in all – the biggest collection of work from this period we've seen!

When I heard Ripper would release their first studio album in a decade I was ecstatic; Ripper are amongst my favourite thrash/death bands of the new guard and whilst they’ve had a slew of smaller releases in the intermediary years it’s great to finally see a new record on the horizon. Formed in 2007 out of Santiago, Chile, Ripper exemplify a coarse and shredding metal attack that’s left audiences breathless in their wake where an ensemble of Demos, a Split, an EP, culminating in their debut record, 2014’s Raising The Corpse, demonstrated with consistent galore. But their 2016 follow up record, Experiment Of Existence, blew the lid clean off as Ripper put their foot firmly amongst the big leagues. Signed onto Darkness Descent Records, Ripper’s third album, the curiously titled Towards Rebirth, sheds light on a band not merely releasing a new record but viewing it as a true rebirth for the band as a whole where, aside from vocalist Patricio Spalinger, Ripper now sees an entirely revamped lineup for a new era. Lined up for a July 24th release date, Towards Rebirth is likely to be on many people’s radars.

It’s been ten years since their last album? Then someone should have reminded Ripper because given the ferocity they perform with out of the gate, their last record might as well have been five minutes ago. Not only do Ripper play fast but their guitar work feels utterly serrated, where welding their instruments with unblemished hands is course for grevious wounding. As they play you’ll feel riffs move through and over you; their performance isn’t merely halting at your person but shall pierce right through your torso and out again. Just because they’ve thrown you to your back doesn’t mean their onslaught will cease as you feel the rush of adrenaline occurring on all sides. This is the kind of thrash/death metal fans love, the kind where mercy is utterly shunned. It simply doesn’t stop for anything for whilst a solo might demonstrate more intricate playing the secondary guitar is shredding ahead with an unbroken slew of notes, maintaining the band’s momentum. Ripper therefore keep your attention engaged even as they lacerate the world around you.

It could be argued, upon hindsight, that Ripper is a band now comprised of lead instrumentalists as each component actively fights, bites and slashes the others not for spotlight but for the glory of killing you. Take the bass for instance, not only is it wonderfully audible and its basslines jumping with the frantic dreams of an MDMA-fuelled gymnast but it manages to defend its position and sound from guitars that are going balls to the wall at every second. The vocals can let loose cries reminiscent of slaughterhouses, there are double bass pieces akin to Dave Lombardo or Charlie Betante’s most fervent thrashings, and yet the bass stands. Credit must be applied to the mix also for enabling every element of the band to come forth through the chaos and still find its audience.

I’ve heard many a quality album this year thus far but few have replicated the intensity Ripper possess, and the vocals are one factor as to why. As sole reminding original member, Spalinger’s vocals are lightning fast and sharp as knives. It truly is a dangerous record to experience as you behold that stabbing, murderous miasma with eyes bloodshot and honed for death. It’s one of the few records you’ll hear this year where the vocals are fast rabid and rapidfire as any riff thrown your way; it’s that Chilean-accented English, much in the same vein as the Germans, that lends Ripper’s lyrical quality the bladed edge they’ve so championed.

It needs emphasising just how total of a whirlwind this record is. Ripper’s songwriting has always been far from safe or casual but Towards Rebirth has taken that unbridled fury to eleven. There is not a moment in record where you’ll feel outright safe and secure in knowing you’ve processed everything it offers; there are going to things you’ll miss yet that brings a peculiar joy, knowing you have a strong reason for returning. You can forget about holding on tight, you’ll be swallowed into the vortex from the first track onwards and from there the winds only increase in speed, they’re constantly picking up debris, you’re assailed in every way imaginable, bruised and lacerated and bludgeoned and whilst mercy is pleaded for the band have the glee to say you’re not done withstanding it yet.

In conclusion, Ripper’s first studio album in a decade is a triumph. It’s one of the best records this year and certainly the fastest I’ve yet experienced. There isn’t a moment of reprieve in sight and yet, though their songwriting never abates or wanes, it’s heavily structured and that structure is noticeable in riffs and how the band direct themselves. Just because they’re playing breakneck speed doesn’t mean it’s without control; it’s just happens to be exquisitely controlled chaos in Ripper’s case. The band race by with a tempo that’s to be feared and whilst you’ll miss some parts owing to that speed, it becomes a second and third or fourth blessing come back to this sonic inferno. I think Towards Rebirth truly justifies its namesake, heralding a new chapter for the band. If this is the standard fans can expect from Ripper we have some spectacular years ahead of us.

With its roots in Merciless or Massacra, but growing branches out to death metal with a more developed melodic palette comes the latest album from Chile’s Ripper. A stylistically far reaching effort that’s nevertheless delivered in a tight package of neatly arranged riff pockets. Dense but traditionally anthemic thrash vocals are complicated by darkly moralistic death metal accents, the choppy chromaticism of death/thrash acting as antagonist to the main thread. Verse refrains mirror traditional hardcore punk by shifting pitch without changing tempo or phrasing, thus allowing Ripper to accelerate the intensity whilst keeping their powder dry for developmental material. In this sense, drums offer a relatively minimalist package that proves to be the right fit for this music. Patterns are kept simple, allowing the percussive qualities of the guitars to guide the rhythmic flow. Equally, fills are kept to brief disorientating shuffles to mark the accrual of surplus activity.

The production is chunkier than is typical for this style. The guitar tone more fitting of stripped back death metal than the highspeed runs delivered across this album. But the mix is accommodating enough to allow for the biproduct of surplus inertia this creates. Despite the density and choppy flow, clarity is retained. For the drums, as it is with their performance, so it is with the levels, which are kept relatively low, playing the role of hype man to the guitars as opposed to an independent lever working its influence on the music. Given the sheer freneticism with which ideas breeze by this is the correct choice. Mid-range death vocals with moderate reverb slide neatly into this picture, when not delivering frantic passages rich in lyrical information they adopt a call and response stance with the lead guitars.

With this album, Ripper prove themselves adept at taking an older style and updating it into a modern context. The raw primitivism of early death metal which took the majority of its language from speed metal forms the backbone, but this is intercut by nods to later developments, to the point where ‘Towards Rebirth’ could function as the story of the borders between death and thrash told through a history of riffs. But atop this sits an additional module of refined melodicism, an account told most explicitly through the expressive guitar leads, but also in many of the riffs, and indeed intriguing moments like the brief bass interlude that emerges on ‘The Source Exterminator’. The result is an onion of an album, one that allows the listener to peel back its multiple layers as they see fit, discovering new angles and corners as the music gradually unfurls in multiple deviations, all guided by a singular meta direction working atop the rich yet subtly woven stylistic alchemy.

"Schwingungen", drugi album Ash Ra Tempel, przynosi pewne zmiany. Nagrany został z nowym perkusistą, Wolfgangiem Müllerem (który zajął miejsce Klausa Schulze'a) i szeregiem gości, jak saksofonista Matthias Wehler czy wokalista podpisany jako John L. Pod względem muzycznym jest to nieco mniej szalony materiał od debiutu, jakby muzycy chcieli połączyć psychodeliczne odjazdy z bardziej przystępnym, niemalże konwencjonalnym graniem. W każdym razie nie jest to już stuprocentowa improwizacja, a częściowo oparta na skomponowanych wcześniej motywach.

Ponownie album składa się dwóch długich nagrań, wypełniających po jednej stronie płyty winylowej. Jednak pierwsze z nich, "Light and Darkness", to tak naprawdę dwa odrębne utwory. "Light: Look at Your Sun" przypomina o bluesowych korzeniach Manuela Göttschinga i Hartmuta Enke'a. Zespół ciekawie łączy tutaj bluesowe partie gitary i bluesowy rytm z charakterystycznym dla krautrocka, psychodeliczno-kosmicznym klimatem. Kiepsko wypada niestety warstwa wokalna, bez której mogło się obyć. "Darkness: Flowers Must Die" to już bardziej odjechane nagranie - dużo elektroniki, egzotyczne perkusjonalia, przeszywające dźwięki saksofonu, gitarowe szaleństwa Göttschinga oraz hipnotyzująca gra sekcji rytmicznej. Ale też znów niepotrzebny, kuriozalny wokal. Wypełniający drugą stronę utwór tytułowy (podzielony na części "Suche" i "Liebe", tworzące jednak dość spójną całość) pokazuje natomiast bardziej oniryczne oblicze Ash Ra Tempel. Z początku utwór jest bardzo delikatny, z pięknymi partiami wibrafonu zatopionymi w klawiszowym tle, ale z czasem dochodzą do tego dźwięki gitarowych sprężeń i intensywna perkusja (przywołujące skojarzenia z floydowskim "A Saucerful of Secrets"). W drugiej części utwór zbliża się do bardziej konwencjonalnej psychodelii i drażni nieudolną wokalizą.

Połączenie eksperymentalnego grania z większą przystępnością nie było złym pomysłem, ale zespół zdecydowanie powinien pozostać przy graniu instrumentalnym, a jeśli już koniecznie chciał mieć wokal - należało rozejrzeć się za kimś, kto potrafi śpiewać. Do warstwy instrumentalnej nie mam zarzutu, ale to okropne wycie znacząco odbiera przyjemność ze słuchania i rujnuje fantastyczny klimat albumu.

New drummer Wolfgang Müller is in, along with, of course, guitarist Manuel Göttsching and bassist Hartmut Enke. And for a vocalist, they chose a guy by the name of John L., previously of AGITATION FREE (who got booted out of that band for being too deranged, apparently ASH RA TEMPEL felt the same was as he was given the boot after this album). Talk about an acquired taste, John L.'s voice tends to be harsh and he always sounded out of tune (he reminded me of CAN's "Malcolm Mooney", so you get sort of an idea what you'll be facing here).
The album starts off with the rather bluesy "Look at Your Sun", complete with John L.'s off-key singing. The next song, "Flowers Must Die" is basically John L. simply screaming under an intense rhythm of guitar and drums, plus the presence of sax gives it a bit of a jazzy feel. Definately party-clearing music, to say the least. The second half of the album consists of "Suche" and "Liebe". "Suche" is a rather sinister spacy piece consisting of mostly vibraphone and organ. "Liebe" is more guitar and voice (this time by Göttsching), and sounds like a cross between PINK FLOYD and ASH RA TEMPEL's debut. Amazing album, if you can get used to the vocals.

Wolfgang Meuller takes Schulze place behind the drumkit, but it's John L.'s vocals that bring to ASH RA TEMPEL what Suzuki or Mooney bring to CAN's sound. A little insanity. This album is a lot better than I was led to believe, and is a must have for Krautrock fans out there.
"Light:Look At Your Sun" opens with faint guitar and vocal sounds that build as bass and drums join in. After 3 minutes it's built ! I love when Gottsching comes in guns a blazing before 3 1/2 minutes.This is fantastic ! John sings the same line over and over. It settles down again 5 minutes in. "Darkness:Flowers Must Die" opens with spacey sax and electronic sounds as percussion comes and goes. A guitar melody with percussion is joined by John's drugged out vocals. Some jew-harp 5 minutes in comes and goes. Vocals are bizarre at times(understatement) reminding me of Damo. Blistering guitar 11 minutes in as drums pound away and John screams out.

"Suche & Liebe" is the side long suite to end the album. It opens with dead silence until we get what sounds like the echo of spacey keys before a minute. Very spacey and then haunting before 6 minutes. Drums come in around the 10 minute mark and get louder, it sounds amazing. Eerie sounds 12 minutes in and an actual melody starts to appear after 14 minutes that is very PINK FLOYD-like. Vocal melodies a minute later. Guitar before 17 minutes. Incredible sound ! Drums come pounding in a minute later as it starts to sound even better. This is so uplifting.

I really think this is almost as good as their classic debut,and John L makes it sound different from that one in a very good way.
