"Ulfven" to ósmy, pełny album szwedów z Ereb Altor. Zakładam, że wszystkim, którym gra w duszy epicki Viking Metal z elementami Black Metalu, osadzony w skandynawskiej mitologii zespół jest dobrze znany, a przynajmniej kojarzony. Z racji tego, że już za niecałe dwa miesiące pojawi się kolejny ich album, postanowiłem przypomnieć jego poprzednika.
"Ulfven" to kolejna porcja podniosłych, nordyckich klimatów, w których znajdują swe odbicie echa starego, dobrego Bathory z czasów nie tylko takich klasycznych płyt jak "Blood Fire Death", "Hammerheart" oraz "Twilight of the Gods", ale również "Nordland". To te dźwięki wiodą prym na tym albumie (podobnie jak ma to miejsce na wcześniejszych ich płytach), ale mamy tu również miejscami nieznaczne naleciałości Doom Metalowe czy Black, a nawet Death Metalowe spod znaku Dissection oraz Unanimated. Ładnie to ze sobą współgra, tworząc majestatyczny muzyczny pejzaż o zarówno złowieszczym, jak i epickim, potężnym wydźwięku. Istotny jest tu bardzo wokal Cristera Olssona, który raz uderza w estetykę i manierę podobną do tej, w jakiej poruszał się Quorthon czy Garm z Ulver (w tych czystych, mocnych odsłonach), a w innych utworach potrafi wydać z siebie bardziej demoniczne wokale podobne tym, które reprezentował chociażby Jon Nodtveidt. Wszystko to zależy od utworu, jego klimatu i charakteru, a różnorodności tutaj pod dostatkiem. Płycie nie brakuje świetnej pracy gitar i sekcji rytmicznej, jak i klimatu budowanego nie tylko przez recytowany na początku fragment Voluspy, ale również klawiszowe tła (w stosunku do innych płyt grupy jest ich tu najwięcej) oraz genialne teksty zbudowane na skandynawskich mitach i wierzeniach. Wszystkie te cechy budują siłę "Ulfven" i sprawiają, że w Viking Metalowej estetyce jest to jedna z najlepszych płyt, jakie pojawiły się w ostatnich latach, z całą pewnością nie wypada przejść obok niej obojętnie. Śmiem twierdzić, iż w swojej dziedzinie Ereb Altor prześciga konkurencję. Z niecierpliwością czekam na ich nową płytę!

Ereb Altor is a Swedish band that was formed in 2003 by members of the epic doom metal outfit Forlorn (who have since switched their moniker to Isole). The band’s first albums were lauded for their seamless weaving of the Viking era of Bathory with traditional epic doom metal. With their third album, “Gastrike”, and it’s follow up, “Fire Meets Ice”, Ereb Altor abandoned the trappings of epic doom for a more black metal influenced sound. “Nattramn”, the band’s fifth full length album, released in 2015, continued in that vein, focusing on merging their epic Viking metal with cold black metal atmospherics, but overall it seemed to be a darker album than before.

That brings us to 2017, and the release of Ereb Altor’s magnus opus yet, “Ulfven”! Bathory, but also hidden Swedish folk melodies, remain the band’s largest influence, which is quite evident with the adventurous pacing, crunchy riffs and frequent epic clean vocals. The album mixes between heavy handed segments of galloping riffs and crashing percussion, and more nuanced melodies driven forth by a wall of keyboard notes. It’s that essence of balance that makes this album work so well, backed up by a very powerful production.

The clean vocal melodies sound stronger and more confident this time around and the harsh and raspy roars are more furious and raging. The band leans on the airy keyboard passages a little more than before, but it adds a more melodic flare to the slower passages. The majority of the album focuses on Quorthon inspired riffing, with its thick power chords and thundering percussion mixed with an airy keyboard backdrop that brings to mind “Hammerheart” and “Twilight of the Gods”. The previously mentioned black metal influences work their way in here and there, but the focus remains on Bathory-ish epicness and heaviness.

It’s pretty clear at this point that Ereb Altor isn’t keen to return to the sounds of the first two albums, but the music on “Ulfven” proves that the band is really blazing their own trail. Sure, they still sound a bit like Bathory, but it comes through revelry and nostalgia rather than the blatant aping of Quorthon.



"Ulfven" is the eighth, full-length album of the Swedes from Ereb Altor. I assume that to everyone who listens to the epic Viking Metal with elements of Black Metal, embedded in Scandinavian mythology, the band is well known, or at least associated. Due to the fact that in less than two months a new album will appear, I decided to recall its predecessor.
"Ulfven" is another portion of lofty, Nordic climates, in which echoes of old good Bathory from the times of not only classic albums such as "Blood Fire Death", "Hammerheart" and "Twilight of the Gods", but also "Nordland" are reflected. These sounds are the most important part of the album (as it was on their previous attempts as well), but we also have here some small accretions of Doom and Black Metal, and even Death Metal similar to Dissection and Unanimated. It fits together nicely and creates a powerful musical landscape with both an ominous and epic, powerful overtone. Very important are the vocals of Crister Olsson, who once struck at the aesthetics and mannerism similar to the ones which Quorthon or Garm from Ulver used (that clean, strong manner), and in other songs he performs more demonic vocals similar to those represented by Jon Nodtveidt for example. It all depends on the composition, its climate and character, and there is no lack of diversity here. The album is full of great guitars and strong rhythm section, as well as the climate built not only by the fragment of Voluspa recited at the beginning, but also keyboard backgrounds (in comparison to other releases by them here we can their strongest appearance) and awesome lyrics based on Scandinavian myths and beliefs. All these features build the strength of "Ulfven" and make it among Viking Metal aesthetics one of the best albums that have appeared in recent years, certainly you should not pass by it indifferently. I dare say that in their genre Ereb Altor outperforms the competition. I am really looking forward to hearing their new album!

Ereb Altor always promises one thing with each release: epic, folk-blended metal inspired by Norse legends. Ulfven shakes things up with a "wolf" theme in its lyrics and art. Rite of Kraka, Ulfven, and Wolfcurse all deliver with majestic riffs and some of the best vocal work from the band. Beyond the inspiration drawn from wolves, the opening reading of Voluspa builds the atmosphere before exploding into En synd svart som sot. Sharp riffs and pounding drums burst from the graceful tongue reciting Voluspa, setting up the rest of the album.

Perhaps the biggest (and longest) highlight of the album is Bloodline. Its lyrics are very grounded for Ereb Altor - a man wishes to carry on his father's legacy and make him proud. While it does retain the Norse mythological themes in its lyrics, it's probably the most emotionally relatable song Ereb Altor has released. Aside from the well sung lyrics, Bloodline's epic riffs ring throughout the ten-and-a-half track to give it the titanic feeling this juggernaut deserves.

While Ereb Altor's songwriting style is one of their biggest strengths (riffs largely composed of sustained notes while a choir or keyboard helps fill in the space), it does get slightly repetitive. However, when they break away and get into some real shredding (like in the bridge of Av blod ar jag kommen) the monotony is shattered. The album definitely incorporates keyboards more than previous titles. Guitars remain high in the mix, keeping everything hard and heavy, and the keys only help to create the grandiose power felt in Ulfven's songs. In addition to adding in more keyboard, Ereb Altor seems to have tapped to black metal a touch further with this album and its cutting bridges.

This is perhaps the most well composed Ereb Altor album in six years thanks to its added keyboards, good blend of epic and more traditional riffs, and the vocals being arguably the best ever laced on an Ereb Altor album. Bloodline is the highlight track, and the lead in of Voluspa into En syn svart som sot make for a destructive opening to one of the best Viking metal albums in many years.

Doskonały i niestety jedyny album włoskiej formacji przypominającej Premiata Forneria Marconi (P.F.M.) z okresu pierwszych dwóch LP, a także Biglietto Per L'Inferno - z dominującymi rozbudowanymi formalnie kompozycjami, z dużą ilością partii instrumentalnych (z dodatkiem klawiszowego tła) i utrzymana w nieco bajkowym (czy też barokowym) klimacie.
Absolutna czołówka włoskiego, progresywnego rocka!



1970 roku paru młodych ludzi w Rzymie założyło sobie zespół. Rockowy. Jeden z setek, które w tym czasie zaczynało działalność. Bardziej dla zabawy niż dla poważnego grania. I tak bawili się przez dwa lata, a potem zdecydowali, że może jednak coś z tego będzie. Po niewielkich zmianach personalnych zabrali się poważniej do roboty, podpisali kontrakt z maleńką firmą Trident Records, poprosili znanego malarza (Gordon Foggetter) o zaprojektowanie okładki i zameldowali się w studiu, by zarejestrować swój debiutancki materiał. W międzyczasie wymyślili sobie nazwę - Semiramis (była to legendarna królowa Babilonu, na rozkaz której powstały równie legendarne wiszące ogrody, określane jako jeden z siedmiu cudów starożytności). Grupa spędziła w studiu około tygodnia, potem miks, produkcja i album ukazał się na rynku. Historia banalna jakich wiele, zwłaszcza w słonecznej Italii w tym okresie. I nie byłoby w tym nic nadzwyczajnego, gdyby nie prosty fakt - powstał album genialny, przez wielu uznawany wręcz za szczytowe dzieło włoskiego proga.

Faktem jest również, że genialność tego wydawnictwa zaczyna się od okładki - w plebiscycie na najlepszą okładkę płyty z muzyką rockową we Włoszech w 1999 roku bezapelacyjnie zwycięża... nasz Semiramis! I tu muszę wszystkim polecić płytę w wersji japońskiej repliki winyla, bo jest rozkładana, a poza piękną okładką zewnętrzną zawiera wspaniały środek który przesądził o wyniku plebiscytu. A poza tym jest to doskonały remaster, miażdżący jakością oryginalne włoskie wydanie. A sama muzyka? To szaleństwo. Jest tu wszystko - od pięknego progresu ze sporymi wpływami klasyki, do niemal hard rockowych fragmentów z doskonałą gitarą. Są piękne fragmenty akustyczne, są piękne melotrony, organy kościelne, hammondy i... wibrafon. Mocna sekcja rytmiczna z bardzo sprawnym perkusistą. I wspaniałe kompozycje wykorzystujące na przemian mocne, rockowo-progresywne klimaty i delikatne, akustyczne wyciszenia - wszystko na zasadzie kontrastu. Całość jest koncept-albumem zagranym zgodnie z ówczesnym kanonem włoskiego rocka symfonicznego, który wyznaczyły takie gwiazdy jak PFM i Banco.

Płytę trzeba przesłuchać kilkukrotnie, by w pełni ją docenić, bowiem ilość pomysłów muzycznych jest tak ogromna, że za pierwszym razem trudno wszystko uchwycić. Osobiście nie podzielam opinii, że jest to najwybitniejsze dzieło włoskiego symfonic-rocka, ale zdecydowanie jego pierwsza dziesiątka. Album niewątpliwie piękny i bardzo dojrzały, kochany przez fanów gatunku na całym świecie - w Japonii zdobył chyba wszystkie możliwe nagrody. Na koniec jeszcze dwie ciekawostki. Pierwsza - tytułowy FRAZZ to pierwsze litery członków grupy (Faenza, Reddovide, Artegiani, Zarrillo, Zarrillo), a druga to fakt, że muzycy w chwili nagrywania tej płyty mieli od 16 do 18 lat (!!!). Niesamowite... Polecam wszystkim, a dla wielbicieli włoskiego proga - jazda absolutnie obowiązkowa.

Another jewel from Italy's 70s prog rock. Intense and melodic, this album is at the same level of the monsters of the style. Very original, it's a hard job can find influences or similarities with another bands. "Frazz" is the highlight. SEMIRAMIS album is a forgotten winner, plenty of emotive intensity. Highly recommended.

Here is yet another major classic Italian prog rock album sure to please all fans of the 70's Prog genre. SEMIRAMIS blend lots of guitars (Classical and electric) with lots of excellent keyboard work. This album does get a bit heavy (which I like!) at times but always returns to the gorgeous settings promised. Considering the age of this recording , this album offers great stereo seperation and sounds even better with a good set of headphones on......Highly recommended !!!

I’m still not 100% sure what drove me to dive so deeply into RPI, aka Rock Progressivo Italiano, but its claws are buried in my flesh and there’s little hope of extraction.I know I love the analog, larger than life music out that came out of the adventure that was the 70s, and Italian prog is just out there enough to give me surprises with each band I discover. Case in point: Semiramis, who up until this year earned their wings on the heights of a single album, 1973’s Dedicato a Frazz. I got tired of waiting for a decently priced vinyl, so grabbed an import CD and I couldn’t be happier. No surprise the keyboard work is exquisite, but overall the songs are really well composed; there’s a lot of rock and grit in the guitars, and it’s one of those releases that as a prog fan is essential. Let’s dive in.

Listening to opening track “La Bottega Del Rigattiere” it’s incredible to think the band, founded by keyboardist Maurizio Zarrillo and his cousins, were only teenagers at the time of recording this. Joined by 16-year old brother Michele Zarrillo who took over guitar and vocals, every track captures the thrill of young kids transmogrifying the music of their heroes into something fresh and thrilling. There are hints of Zappa, of King Crimson, but also of what their (slightly) older peers at home were expressing, like Banco del Mutuo Soccorso with the heavy keyboard component. Getting back to the opening track, it’s slightly fractured, a series of ideas that don’t quite congeal, like putting a shattered mirror back together but some of the pieces don’t quite line up.

But oh, what pieces. Panned extreme left and right, the Zarillo brothers work their instruments like inspired demons, the solos that end “La Bottega Del Rigattiere” blast right into the heavy dual-lined riffing of “Luna Park.” Drummer Paolo Faenza, who would go on to be the sole member taking part in follow-up album La fine non esiste – a sophomore record that took 51 years to arrive – has a great feel, alternating between almost Bonham-esque power and more elegant, jazz-bordering-on-classical fills and flourishes. There’s a sense of that classical element at large on “Uno Zoo Di Vetro” and later on “Frazz” which has moments that feel like chamber music, albeit chamber music made baby a bunch of teenagers who can’t wait to speed back up again.

I think that’s the real reason I enjoy Dedicato A Frazz so much. That sense of sprawling, fragmented arrangements that don’t cohere as tightly as the giants of the scene is a feature, not a bug when you contextualize it as the youthful exuberance: who didn’t want to be their heroes the first time they picked up an instrument? Who knows what a second album with the same members would have sounded like. I did listen to the new album (you can listen and grab a copy here thanks to Bandcamp) and it’s fine. Not only fine, but pretty damn good. But it sounds like a bunch of really seasoned players playing some really nice progressive rock. It doesn’t have that bite, that sense of going off the rails and not caring because it’s so fun. Everything is balanced and expertly produced, but give me that grunge and dirt bite of something like the rock and roll chaos that sprouts a minute into the closing track “Clown” and you’ll hear that thing that made this, the truly sole album by Semiramis, such a hit.

Zespół Opus Avantra narodził się w Veneto w 1973 roku. Jego twórcami byli sopranistka Donella Del Monaco (siostrzenica słynnego tenora Maria Del Monaco), pianista i kompozytor Alfredo Tisocco, filozof Giorgio Bisotto oraz producent Renato Marengo. Grupa ta postanowiła „połączyć siły”, aby „wstrząsnąć” muzyczną panoramą tamtych lat, która znajdowała się w impasie .

Nazwa kolektywu składa się z trzech słów, które opisują ich główne zainteresowania: OPUS (opera), AVAN (awangarda) i TRA (tradycja). Ich celem jest pozycjonowanie się jako muzycznego ruchu awangardowego, który jednak ma swoje korzenie w pielęgnowaniu tradycji.

Okej, przyznaję się, zapomniałem trochę o nich. Kiedyś, tak do wydanego w 2006 roku Christ 0, śledziłem ich każdy wydawniczy krok. Potem jednak nastąpiła czteroletnia przerwa, która zaowocowała albumem The Seraphic Clockwork i… kolejną ciszą trwającą cztery lata zwieńczoną wreszcie wydanymi rok po roku dwoma częściami Chronicles Of The Immortals – Netherworld. Wiadomo jednak, że tak długie okresy milczenia – przy rodzącej się jak grzyby po deszczu konkurencji i lawinie wydawanych płyt – często nie wzmagają zainteresowania kapelą. Mogą też niektórzy nieco zapomnieć o swoich ulubieńcach. Tak było niestety i w moim przypadku.

Na szczęście, jakimś szczęśliwym trafem, dowiedziałem się o wydanym w 2017 roku The Seraphic Live Works, które bez wielkiego szumu trafiło na półki sklepowe za sprawą włoskiej wytwórni Frontiers Records. Gwoli pewnego porządku dodam, że niemiecki Vanden Plas to jedna z najciekawszych europejskich formacji parających się progresywnym metalem. Ba! To wręcz prawdziwi weterani gatunku, mający na koncie ponad 30 lat działalności, dziewięć albumów studyjnych oraz dwie koncertówki.

The Seraphic Live Works jest właśnie drugą z nich, dosyć jednak niecodzienną. Bo to przede wszystkim ich pierwszy oficjalny materiał DVD, będący zatem prawdziwą gratką dla tych, którzy ich tylko do tej pory słuchali, ale nigdy na „dłuższym” dystansie nie widzieli. Owa niecodzienność wynika jednak także z tego, że – choć to mająca kilka miesięcy nowość - nie mamy tu zapisanego w miarę aktualnego koncertu, tylko rejestrację sprzed… ponad sześciu lat dokonaną we wrześniu 2011 roku, podczas znanego festiwalu ProgPower w Center Stage Theater w amerykańskiej Atlancie. Nie usłyszymy zatem kompozycji z ostatnich płyt grupy (dwóch odsłon Chronicles Of The Immortals – Netherworld). Są za to głównie kompozycje z promowanego wówczas The Seraphic Clockwork (aż pięć numerów: Rush of Silence, Holes in the Sky, Scar of an Angel, Quicksilver, Frequency) oraz reprezentanci trzech wcześniejszych płyt - Christ 0 z dwoma utworami oraz Far Off Grace i Beyond Daylight, które doczekały się tu po jednej kompozycji. Jednym słowem, o wielkiej reprezentatywności dla ich twórczości trudno tu mówić. Tego wieczoru Niemcy zagrali jeszcze na bis dwa kawałki (Christ 0, Rainmaker), które jednak ze względów objętościowych nie trafiły na dyski. A szkoda, bo rzecz wydana jest w formacie CD & DVD i o ile 78 minut dla pierwszego dysku jest zrozumiałe, to już dodanie tych dwóch nagrań na dysku DVD, choćby w formie bonusu, mocno by tę koncertówkę uatrakcyjniło. Tym bardziej, że poza standardowym już wszak wyborem między stereo a 5.1 i dostępem do poszczególnych utworów, nic więcej w menu nie mamy.

Nie jest to więc jakaś wypasiona rzecz, choć wydana pod względem graficznym i estetycznym bardzo gustownie (wnętrze ewidentnie nawiązuje graficznie do również koncertowego albumu Pallas The Blinding Darkness). Koncert zarejestrowano przy użyciu pięciu kamer i zmontowano dosyć dynamicznie. W przypadku Holes in the Sky sceniczne kadry uzupełnione są fragmentami oficjalnego klipu do tej kompozycji. Oczywiście wielkich fajerwerków tu nie ma – ot, scena, za nią rozwieszone logo formacji, a na niej pięciu świetnie prezentujących się muzyków. Na szczególne wyróżnienie zasługuje kapitalnie radzący sobie wokalnie Andy Kuntz, wycinający selektywne riffy ale też i zgrabne sola (np. to w Far off Grace) gitarzysta Stephan Lill oraz wręcz niepasujący do ich metalowego entourage’u, bardzo stonowany za swoim klawiszowym zestawem, Günter Werno. Widać wszystko bardzo dobrze a i dźwięk nie pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Materiał można porównać do nagranego dokładnie tam dwa lata wcześniej DVD Frozen In The Moment - Live In Atlanta, innego progmetalowego składu, amerykańskiego Redemption. I podobnie jak tamto wydawnictwo warte jest oczu i uszu prawdziwych fanów progmetalowej jazdy.

Ale las, choć oddala się w warstwie dźwiękowej, duchem, obecnością we wspomnieniach i uczuciach, wciąż tętni w tekstach.'


Ols - a one-woman project, entirely created by Anna Maria Olchawa who composes, arranges, writes lyrics, sings and plays instruments.
The songs are based on polyphonic vocal harmonies, complemented with instrumental parts which build a ritual, hypnotic character. Ols combines the elements of many genres - from dark folk, through alternative music,to fragments inspired by atmospheric black metal.

To opowieść o budowaniu siebie z fragmentów przeżyć, emocji i historii, które nas kształtują. Jedną nogą wciąż w bajkowej prostocie dzieciństwa, drugą – już w dorosłych przemyśleniach. Właśnie wtedy zaczynamy tworzyć swój własny mit. 'O niej' opowiada o miłości, która wdziera się w dziecięcy świat, pokazując jednocześnie jego piękno i pierwszy smak ciemności, ból straty. Muzycznie chciałam uchwycić ten klimat miejskiego wieczoru – czasem samotnego, chłodnego, ale też pełnego specyficznej energii. To z pewnością krok w stronę miejskiego brzmienia, odległy od neofolku, z którym jestem kojarzona, z triphopowym vibem. Ale las, choć oddala się w warstwie dźwiękowej, duchem, obecnością we wspomnieniach i uczuciach, wciąż tętni w tekstach.'


Ols - a one-woman project, entirely created by Anna Maria Olchawa who composes, arranges, writes lyrics, sings and plays instruments.
The songs are based on polyphonic vocal harmonies, complemented with instrumental parts which build a ritual, hypnotic character. Ols combines the elements of many genres - from dark folk, through alternative music,to fragments inspired by atmospheric black metal.

Although I wouldn't place it amidst the top crop of death metal albums this year, I was mildly impressed by this debut from Italy's Ghouls, because it's a refreshing take on the genre as original as it is brutal. The band is technical in a subtle way, in particular the excellent bass playing of Stefano Franceschini which is practically at a frenetic pace akin to Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, etc). The rest of the band is just as competent, and the guitars are mixed with a punchy sound that adequately conveys both their brutal chopping and hints of melody.

"Menstrual Vaginal Cry" begins with its frantic blasting and winding wall of riffs, often accompanied by lascivious and tormenting sounds of female pain and pleasure. "Endless Pleasure" continues this trend of horrific lyrical sexual deviance with the crisp plucked death metal riffing and the unhinged flying of the bass and insane blast beats of Claudio Testini. "To Bitch or Not to Bitch" and the rest also cast a similar shadow here, it's a consistent and fluid album which makes it difficult to pick out particular strong points. The lyrics throughout are charged with sadism, sexual torture and voyeuristic murder. In other words, an appropriately disgusting death metal album.

Though there are no 'killer' songs here as far as being memorable, this is a solid and worthy debut album from a band with a colorful spin on their genre, easily better than many heralded new albums or 'superbands' that have emerged this year, and it's well worth your attention if you are a fan of sick and sadistic death metal akin to Deicide, Vital Remains or even the crop of quality tech death coming out lately.
