Debiutancki album zespołu z czeskiej Pragi grającego mocarny death/grind inspirowany SUFFOCATION, INGROWING, MELANCHOLY PESSIMISM, CEREBRAL TURBULENCY.



Czechia-based death metal gem CRUSHER was founded in 1991. Its debut full-length album, "Daymares," was originally released in 1996. It is a grossly underrated semi-technical death metal masterpiece!



Day-dreaming can sometimes produce some really positive results, I tell you, as is the case with our friends here who detonated the underground with their vociferous, albeit occasionally stylish death/grind outrages on a string of demos in the early/mid-90’s before deciding to give those day-dreams a more wholesome shape with the album reviewed here.

This opus is a big step forward for the band into finely crafted semi-technical death metal, a tasty compendium of Pestilence’s “Consuming Impulse” and Death’s “Spiritual Healing”, with vociferous shouty Martin Van Drunen-like vocals guiding the show which starts quite dynamically with the brisk fast-pacers “Time Can See Everything” and the brilliant “Testimony of the Ancients” qualifier “Escape to Nowhere” those two raising the adrenaline level high at the beginning, also creating the impression that this could be a headbanging fest… and this is pretty much the case the delivery occasionally descending to heavy meandering, but never inordinately complex riff-patterns as evident from the brooding “People of Three Faces” although the ride remains unusually lively and energetic (“Impossibility of Conversion”, the “Spiritual Healing” leftover “Impossibility of Conversion”), with dark and moody (“Strands of the Past”) overtones timidly trying to impose their somber understanding of the death metal canons, before the arrival of two outstanding more technical showdowns “The Call from Elsewhere” and “Silent Pain” this last cut a wonderful progressively-laid out shredder with sudden lyrical digressions working against the elaborately brutal main frame.

Regardless of the high level of musicianship on display, the whole package had the feel of a rehearsal for something grander and more ambitious, like the guys were testing the soil before embarking on a more exuberantly intricate journey sparkles of which were all over the effort here. Well, those lofty visions never materialized as the band reverted back to the old more pristine death/grindcore blend on the next two instalments, both bashing, relatively simplistic affairs that must have found their audience in the early-00’s as there were no any unforgivable defects on them, truth be told.

It’s just that technical, or at least semi-technical death metal are distant memories on those, the re-release of the early demos in 2012 not helping the audience much in achieving the intended total recall regarding the album reviewed here. The state of day-dreaming would do the trick, I’ve heard some people say… there have never been elaborate death wishes crushed during such sleep-inducing musings.

With the release of their 2nd album, "Diin", the Bergen post metal band Krakow received much praise and recognition for their special take on the genre. On their 3rd album, "Amaran", the band has developed their style further, and made an unique and atmospheric record that will definitely stand out. This time, the band explores both the more calmer sides of their sound as well as the more experimental drone sides. This makes "Amaran" a highly variated album, filled with both dreaming soundscapes and a sinister and harsh atmosphere.

With the addition of drummer Ask Ty Arctander (Kampfar), the band also have another strong musician in the line-up that has helped to broaden their sound.

Krakow has again worked with producer Iver Sandøy in Solslottet and Duper Studio, and "Amaran" is set to be one of the most uniqe post-metal albums of 2015.




Norwegian band KRAKOW has a history going back a decade or thereabouts, and I understand that all members are fairly seasoned musicians in their own right. As a collective unit they have released a good handful of EPs and albums since their formation. "Amaran" is the most recent of their three studio albums to date, and was released through Norwegian label Dark Essence Records at the start of 2015.
Dark Essence is a label I understand are well known for their orientation towards metal, and Krakow is most certainly a band that resides within that sphere of music. They are not your typical purveyors of aggression and darkness however, and they do bring quite a lot to the table on this particular production. There's not too much aggression at hand here either, although it does pop up now and then, whereas those more fond of introspective, bleak and subtly oppressive moods and atmospheres will find a lot to enjoy on this CD.

I think a good place to start here is with doom metal and possibly grunge and stoner metal as well, as I kind of get the impression that these make up the foundation for the escapades of this quartet. More often than not as distant echoes and shadows lurking beneath, but fairly often also with elongated passages and sequences exploring a more or less well defined take on those genres as well. Not all that often without some additional features however, so those fond of these styles in a more purebred manner will perhaps not be intrigued by this specific album.

What Krakow adds to these fairly popular takes on hard rock and metal are cosmic and psychedelic instrument details, subtle amounts of post-punk angst and vibrancy, a fairly liberal amount of fluttering nervous instrument details and textured instrument motifs post-rock style, occasional dips into m ore of a black metal inspired sound and a bit more liberal use of black metal inspired backing vocals complementing, supplementing and contrasting the mostly more melodic, controlled and compelling lead vocals. Arguably with something of a progressive rock approach to the art of compositional structures, theme and arrangement development to boot.

The album as such is fairly diverse actually, but the ongoing dark, bleak and subtly oppressive atmospheres does give it more of a cohesive expression overall, one that might be experienced as one-dimensional as well by those listening to music in in more of a superficial manner. Hence this is a CD that calls for those who listen with a certain amount of focus and concentration. Those who recognize themselves in such a description, who tends to find bleak moods compelling in general and who enjoys some variety to such landscapes such probably give a listen to this album at some point. Especially if these are explored within a context of doom and stoner metal.

Tardigrade Inferno to rosyjski zespół metalowy pochodzący z Sankt Petersburga, działający od około 2016 roku. Grupa tworzy w unikalnym stylu określanym jako dark cabaret metal - łącząc elementy metalu awangardowego, muzyki kabaretowej, industrialu i estetyki teatralnej. Skavers to szwedzki zespół ska pochodzący ze Sztokholm, działający głównie w latach 2002–2008. Grupa tworzyła muzykę w stylistyce old school ska, łącząc ją z wpływami jazzu, funku oraz elementami bałkańskimi, co nadawało ich brzmieniu charakterystyczną, rozbudowaną formę instrumentalną. Zespół występował w rozbudowanym składzie (często 7–9 osób), wykorzystując m.in. sekcję dętą, co jest typowe dla klasycznego ska. Ich muzyka była nastawiona na energię koncertową i taneczny klimat, a repertuar obejmował zarówno utwory studyjne, jak i nagrania demo. Skavers pojawiali się również na scenie festiwalowej - m.in. na szwedzkim festiwalu reggae i world music Oland Roots w 2008 roku. Wstawka zawiera ich jedyny album studyjny.

HERUVIM are a Death Metal act from Odessa, Ukraine, that launched in 2019.

The band released a demo digitally through Bandcamp in 2021 entitled The Riddle of Steel and began playing live and working on their follow up. I came to discover the band around the time Russia invaded Ukraine in February; at the time the band began streaming the first song off of their upcoming EP Shadowheart. After contacting the band in order to hear the rest of the EP before it was released, I was blown away with what I heard.

HERUVIM’s approach to death metal is completely refreshing and unique. They borrow heavily from the 90’s Death Metal scene, but not the typical bands one would expect. The biggest influences heard in the majority of this EP come from early Pestilence, Morgoth, and even Atheist at times. The vocals provided by Nefarious are extremely intense and powerful; they really stand out amongst Death Metal vocalists of the day. Of course, the band have much more important things to deal with as their country has been invaded by their powerful neighbor to the East.

The band are doing everything they can to support their county’s defense, including donating all digital profits to the Ukrainian Army. In addition, vocalist Nefarious works with a team of journalists who call themselves Fryed Pin Family. They have been creating a series of mini-documentaroes in collaboration with the UMBS (Ukraine Must be Safe) Volunteer Organization. We will provide a link to one of the mini-docs below. Recently reviewing the EP, NO CLEAN SINGING had to say: “Delivered with a clear yet powerful production, the songs combine harrowing, spine-tingling roars and ruinous howls, bone-jolting grooves, kaleidoscopic guitar work that introduces moods of dread, despair, and grief, as well as freakishness, frenzy, and ferocity, and constant tempo shifts whose changes are executed with technical precision.

The music is heavy as hell and often mauling, but also frequently intricate and mesmerizing. Some riffs drag and become oppressive, but the fretwork is just as capable of becoming fleet, fiery, and inventively adventurous, and the soloing is eye-popping. And thus it will likely appeal to fans of technical death metal as well as lovers of unchained aggression, and the evocative melodies create an enticing intersection with melodic death metal as well.”




As Death Metal evolved from its seed sawn in the 80's, the genre walked far away from the early form and gained a proper life (or, in other words, became far from its embryonic influences). Of course the name 'Death Metal' evokes and ample range of musical subgenres, but it's common to depict bands that stay in the limits of classic Death Metal. But the Ukrainian quartet HERUVIN shows a different way on "Shadowheart".

Their musical work is based on a classic model of Death Metal, but using a good technical appeal (where, sometimes, Thrash Metal touches and hooks can be heard), and some unusual features (as some subjective melodic touches, as can be heard on the song "Shadowheart", and introspective parts as heard on "Oppression"). Their musical work is really something different from the common models and even with the difficulties that they have to deal with (being an independent band, and the war that is ravaging their country), the quartet presents something good, hooking and aggressive. It could be compared in some ways to the early works of AMORPHIS, IN FLAMES, EDGE OF SANITY and AT THE GATES, but with a particular approach.

The sonority is very good, indeed (and to think that they don't a label to give them support is something astonishing), with everything sounding aggressive, defined and clean, what enables the fans to understand what they are expressing with their musical work without efforts. One can check that "Shadowheart" (a long song full of rhythmic shifts and a very good technical work, based on a very good work of the guitars with technical arrangements and hooks), "Oppression" (that bears a classic outfit, but with personal touches inherited from Thrash Metal, and what good work is shown on bass guitar and drums), "Empire Falls" (another long song full of shifts and arrangements, what keeps the attention of the listeners and evades the boring feeling; and what lovely arrangements and good grunts), and "Hyborian Age" (another very good set of tempos, but in a song with a simple Death Metal appeal, with many hooks and charming parts). As one can check, they prefer to use lyrical themes based on the work of Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan, the Barbarian. Yes, the band has a great potential to explore in the future, so expect great things of HERUVIM. But why in the blazes "Shadowheart" isn't a full album?
