I saw this video in record shops some years ago in the VHS format, but I never bought it until now, available as DVD.
As "The Story of Supertramp So Far" (until 1990, when the video was made), it really is very brief in the information given about the history of the band: about 12 minutes from their period with Roger Hodgson (1969-83), and about 15 minutes from Hodgson`s departure until the split of the band in 1988. It also has some incorrect information: the first two albums of the band were not recorded by the original line-up, as the narrator says. So, in comparison to other "Video Biographie"s of other bands ("Yesyears" from YES and "Genesis- an History" by Genesis, both released in 1991), this video of Supertramp has very little information, but, a very good thing is that they included 11 complete songs from two concerts filmed during their last tour with Hodgson in 1983 (Toronto and Munich), which is the best part of the video (and the YES and Genesis videos, in comparison, only showed fragments of songs!). In general, all songs are played well, with the help of two guest musicians, Fred Mandel (keyboards, guitar) and a young Scott Page (saxophones, flute, guitar, vocals; years later he also played with Pink Floyd between 1987 and 1989). But as the previous reviewer wrote, most of the time the cameras are focused on Hodgson, Davies and Helliwell, and less time on Siebenberg, Thomson, and the guest musicians. But, at last I could see an official and profesionally filmed concert video of the band (I think that some of these songs were available to be seen in youtube.com some months ago; I remember seeing "Crime of the Century" there). There are some variations to previous live versions of these songs: Helliwell and Page share some sax solos; Page adds flute to one song; there are two guitars playing the solo in "Crime of the Century" (as in the original studio version). "Give a Little Bit" is played a bit faster than the studio version, and at last I could see a live version of "Goodbye Stranger" played with Hodgson. It is also good to see and hear Hodgson singing and playing his own songs in concert with Supertramp, and these live versions are, in my opinion, more "Genuine" than the live versions played by the band without Hodgson.

The DVD also includes five bonus video clips of the next songs:

-"My Kind of Lady": from the "...famous last words..." album, with the members of the band dressed as singers from the fifties. In this video is apparent for me that the split of Hodgson from the band was on the way, as the cameras are focused most of the time in Davies-Helliwell-Siebenberg-Thomson, and in the "backing band" scenes the four of them also appear, with Hodgson only briefly appearing playing the guitar.

-"Cannonball": a video clip of the edited single version of the song, with scenes of "Primitive Man and Woman" mixed with scenes of the band playing in an open air theatre (is it the Hollywood Bowl?).

-"Better Days": an interesting video clip with some political images and futuristic images of the world. Some politicians are also shown in this video.

-And two video clips from songs of the "Free as a Bird" album: "Free as a Bird" and "I`m Beggin` You". It seems that I`m one of the very few persons in this world who like this album, so I also liked both videoclips. The video for "Free as a Bird" shows the band doing a playback of the song with images of birds flying. "I^m Begging You" shows the members of the band filmed on the streets of one city (Los Angeles?) with some images of some women walking on the street too.

In conclusion, this is a good DVD, but maybe the main interest to release it for commercial purposes was to show the band playing in concert during 1983, more than being a long Documentary of the band with more detailed information of their history.So it works better as a concert video, in my opinion.

Amen Corner reaches the impressive milestone of seven Full-length, I've been following their releases for many years, but in Written by the Devil something would be different (and it was). Speaking about the past, Fall, Ascension, Domination from 1993 was a milestone and despite being an absolute classic, for me Iachol Ve Tehilá managed to climb the highest step in his discography, there are several reasons, but we will leave the details of this album for another opportunity, the EP from 1999 Darken in Quir Haresete closed the first phase (we can say it this way) establishing the name Amen Corner as a reference in Brazil. Only in 2007 with Lucification did they reappear, completely reformulated and with a sound that did not refer to the past, we can say that this work represented the second phase.

The triumphant return was with the excellent album Leviathan Destroyer, marking the return of Sucoth Benoth to his old home with his characteristic vocals. Chri$t Worldwide Corporation continued the saga with a high level of creation, it was an album that remained inside the cd-player for several days in a row, it came accompanied by a DVD with a documentary and historical recordings showing the great importance they had in Brazil. Under the Whip and the Crown came in the same four-year hiatus as the previous album, this is perhaps an album that lacked something, not musically speaking, but the impression I had is that they didn't elevate this work to the promotion it should have. This was something that was not lacking in this new work, Written by the Devil has inspired compositions, we can give the main merit to Murmúrio, the main composer since the early days, the album captivates from its intro followed by the powerful The War of the Antichrist, the third track The Protectors has a lyric that refer to an inspiration from King Diamond, interesting, lyric that differentiate from all the others. The fourth track Fall and Ascension is one of the most beautiful tracks ever composed by them, melancholic, sad, depressive, the guitar lines emerge all these feelings, having a rhythmic elevation at the end, a magnificent work in just over seven minutes, this track closes side A.

Signal from Beyond opens side B, it starts like the beginning of a nightmare, with Tenebrae Aarseth (drums) having a great highlight and importance in the change of pace of this track, ending once again with emphasis on the guitar lines, which walk in a disbelieving way followed by a saddened vocal. Next comes Inferno, which is one of the heaviest tracks on the album, followed by the title track, which ends up being another great highlight of this work, with precise breaks in the tempo, a fast and powerful chorus. The Splendor of Your Presence shows how competent Amen Corner is in creation, they transformed a relatively simple lyric into an excellent track, here we highlight Fernando Grommtt (bass), who was responsible for the composition, leaving his mark in the best way. Lúcifer, a Suprema Luz da Manhã closes the record, as we can infer, lyrics in Portuguese composed by Baal Seth Penitent (Torches of Nero), it is a prayer/narration with a perfect sound base to close this somewhat surprising album.

While many live only in the past, Amen Corner shows that the power of creation has not yet run out, after more than 30 years they managed to create one of the best albums in their history. Endless war, ideological wars!!!

Piękne miasto Werona w północnych Włoszech jest dobrze znane ze swojej średniowiecznej architektury i jako miejsce akcji Romea i Julii Szekspira.
Być może mniej znany jest fakt, że w latach 80. i 90. miała również kwitnącą scenę doomową. To właśnie z tej sceny wyłonił się EPITAPH .

Wydali 3 dema, z których ostatnie ukazało się około 1994 roku. Zespoły doomowe znane są ze swojego wolnego tempa, ale EPITAPH potrzebowało prawie 30 lat od momentu, kiedy zaczęli, aby w końcu wydać swój debiutancki album.
Nawet jak na standardy doomu, szybkość POWALA!!!

Dla fanów TROUBLE, SAINT VITUS i SPIRITUS MORTIS...



“So let it be written, so let it be done…”; only that our friends here didn’t have to kill any pharaoh sons be it first or second born, although no one can explain why they hid from sight for whole 20 years after a string of pretty cool demos released in the late-80’s/early-90’s. This act is the continuation of the very-short lived trad doom metal stint Sacrilege, an act who only produced one demo in 1987 (later posthumously re-released under the “Demon Woman” title in 2013), founded by former members of the atmospheric doom/rock legends Black Hole, the drummer Mauro Tollini and the guitar player Nicola Murari.

The demo material was a faithful follow-up to the delivery from the Sacrilege only demo, classic traditional doom only served with a better, crisper sound quality and with less fast-paced deviations. However, instead of nailing the anticipated full-length, the guys vanished, literally without a trace. Their time eventually came, again some two decades later, with the album reviewed here. The delivery has moved a bit towards the epic side but the trad motifs are still quite prominent for one to immediately start screaming “Candlemass!” or “Solitude Aeturnus!” at the top of his/her lungs; in other words, think something along the lines of the Germans Mirror of Deception or Dawn of Winter, the bouncy dynamics of “Beyond the Mirror” not far from the belligerent doomisms of Trouble even, the more officiant setting instilled by ship-sinkers like “Sacred and Prophane” and the funereal-like masterpiece “The Battle of Inside”.

The seismicity reaches Richter-esque proportions on the mournful but restlessly effective 9-min saga “Daughters of Lot”, a great summation of all things doom after which the band switch to more volatile less doom-fixated rhythms with the strangely uplifting “Loser One” and the cantankerous power/doom blender “Necronomicon”, all more aggressive rebellions invariably mortified on the imposing piece of sorrow and lament “Confuse the Light”, a glorious encyclopaedic epitaph with sharp cutting guitars and a supreme quieter melancholic finale.

An act of the kind is bound to have a strong performance behind the mike, and the singer Emiliano Cioffi (also the doom-laden one-album-wonder All Souls' Day (“Into the Mourning”, 2001) by no means disappoints his soaring emotional croons leading the dark sombre procession with all the authority that can be mustered. The man neither wails not pitches it higher but his steady melodic timbre never falters, coming as a more composed lower-pitched Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass), occasionally acquiring more quarrelsome tones on the more intense moments.

The sequel “Claws” was woven of pretty similar motifs and nuances, another fairly strong showing that placed the guys right next to primal doom providers from their homeland like Disharmonic, Black Oath, The Foreshadowing, Fangtooth, Crimson Dawn, Abysmal Grief, The Black, Night Gaunt, etc. Yes, Italy has grown into one of the biggest scenes for the supply of volcanic antediluvian reverberations in the last 10/15 years, and with our friends around it seems as though the word “epitaph” will be the last one to be spelt across the sky over there.

O rodzimym Königreichssaal słyszałem nieco, gdy debiutowali w 2020 r., ale jakoś przeszedłem obok tego. Cóż, przyszło mi to nadrobić, gdy na moje ręce złożono ich drugiego pełniaka „Psalmen’o’Delirium”. I okazało się, że zaległość była spora.

Königreichssaal prezentuje swoistą mieszankę black metalu z domieszką „doom”, ale z mocnym naciskiem na „swoistą”. Szczerze mówiąc w ogarnianiu tej muzyki sporo pomógł mi wywiad, jaki onegdaj zrobił kol. Oracle z De Atevsem, gdyż pozwolił mi lepiej zrozumieć zamysł stojący za stylem grania Sal Królewskich. A jest to dość mocno nieprzystępne i szalone granie.

Königreichssaal nie bawi się w głaskanie słuchacza po głowie, czy podróże do krypt, lub masturbację szyszkami pod świerkiem. „Psalem’o’delirium” jawi się, jako studium upadku oraz obłędu, które wprost bije brudem, szpetotą oraz potężną dawką ponurego nihilizmu. Już zapowiadający płytę singiel „Rubikon”, mimo iż najprzystępniejszy z zawartych na płycie utworów, budził wewnętrzny niepokój, a im dalej w płytę, tym bardziej to uczucie narasta osiągając apogeum w tytułowym „Psalmen” właśnie. Dużo tu robi świetnie prowadzona linia basu, jakby lekko wysunięta nad gitary, ale jednak doskonale z nimi współgrająca. Same riffy również zasługują na uznanie, i choć nie ma tu przebojowości, to jednak każdy dźwięk wydaje się przemyślany oraz ułożony z pozostałymi w całość ze sporą dawką ponurego pietyzmu. Mile zaskoczyły mnie również partie bębnów, które są tutaj naprawdę dobre, pełne świetnych smaczków. No i wokale. Dzikie, obłąkane, gdzie tle pobrzmiewa, co jakiś czas pokraczny bełkot. Wszystko tu się pięknie skleja.

Wspomniałem wcześniej o utworze tytułowym, „Psalmen”, to wszystkie wspomniane cechy znajdują się właśnie na nim. Moje Misie, ten kawałek jest przerażający. Słuchając go wielokrotnie miałem wrażenie, że oto jestem świadkiem autentycznego napadu szaleństwa podlanego alkoholowym upojeniem. Nie ma tu miejsc na romantyzowanie zaburzeń psychicznych, tylko na dzikie konwulsje podlane dziwacznym bełkotem, w szczególności w ostatnich dwóch minutach kawałka, gdy po słowach „zaczęło się” wjeżdża absolutne apogeum szału. Wgniotło mnie w ziemię.

No dobra, nasapałem z ukontentowaniem trochę, ale są jakieś wady? Jedna tylko, mianowicie ten album może przejść bez większego echa, gdyż dla przeciętnego metalucha będzie jawić się, jako głęboko niestrawny.

A! Na koniec wspomnę o świetnej okładce, która pięknie oddaje z czym przyjdzie nam się mierzyć podczas odsłuchów.

„Psalmen’o’delirium” świetnym albumem jest. Całym sobą kibicuję, by ta podróż w otchłań nie przeszła bez echa, bo inaczej stracicie wiele. Ja w każdym razie zanucę sobie po raz kolejny TANZ MEIN HERTZ!

Ten materiał rozjechał mnie totalnie. Nie żebym nie był przygotowany na dobry album, praktycznie od początku znam i cenię sobie muzykę Königreichssaal (wiem, brzmię jak stary dziad borowy…), ale czegoś aż tak dobrego się po prostu nie spodziewałem. Mam wrażenie, że tą płytą całkiem niezły zespół wskakuje o poziom wyżej. Już pierwsze przesłuchanie „Psalmen’o’delirium” zrobiło na mnie spore wrażenie a dzisiaj, po ponad trzech miesiącach intensywnego słuchania mój entuzjazm co do tego krążka jest chyba jeszcze większy. Według mnie są trzy główne elementy, które wynoszą ten album wysoko ponad przeciętność… Po pierwsze wokale. To one od razu, przy pierwszym odsłuchu zrobiły piorunujące wrażenie. To co się tu dzieje to istna orgia szaleństwa i obłędu! Jakieś ryki, krzyki, chóralne śpiewy, zawodzenia, szepty, paranoiczne wołania, pełne rozpaczy lamenty i wycie jak z jakiegoś pijackiego szału. Motywy alkoholowych bełkotów i mamrotania w amoku mocno podbijają bardzo ciężki klimat unoszący się nad całością. I to właśnie ta nihilistyczna, pełna beznadziei atmosfera jest drugim głównym atutem tej płyty. Całość jawi mi się zresztą jako życiowa podróż alkoholika, który przekroczył już swój Rubikon i nie widzi możliwości powrotu. Tu pojawiają się te najstraszniejsze i najbardziej realne, bo rodzące się w głowie człowieka demony. Wiem, że to banał tak mówić o albumie zespołu metalowego, ale na tej płycie nie ma absolutnie nic pozytywnego. Słuchacz praktycznie przez cały czas miota się pomiędzy beznadzieją i zwątpieniem a przerażeniem. Oczywiście kluczową rolę (poza muzyką) grają tutaj wspomniane wyżej wokale, ale też wszystkie te pozamuzyczne wtręty, głosy, sample, szczekające psy – toż też w sposób przemyślany podbija klimat. Do tego dochodzą jeszcze wszystkie te muzyczne smaczki, jak chociażby potężne klawisze w „Iskarja”, albo jeżące włos na głowie, pogrzebowe skrzypce w niesamowitym „Psalmen”… I tu dochodzimy do punktu trzeciego na mojej liście, czyli samej muzyki. Powiedzieć, że Königreichssaal gra tutaj black metal to tak jakby nic nie powiedzieć. Tak przemyślanego, dopracowanego i wielowymiarowego (wbrew pozorom!) materiału już dawno nie słyszałem na naszej scenie. Mam wrażenie, że gdzieś ulotniły się wszystkie te przystępne melodie, które pojawiały się na ich debiucie, a ich miejsce zajęły mroczne, momentami potężne, a chwilami mocno psychodeliczne riffy. Naprawdę mocno się trzeba namęczyć i włożyć sporo energii by spróbować ogarnąć całość tych wielowątkowych kompozycji. Z jednej strony czuć tu ducha sceny lat 90., z drugiej jednak brzmi to wszystko nadzwyczaj świeżo – choć akurat to słowo wydaje się nie do końca trafione w kontekście tak mrocznej i tchnącej zgniłym klimatem płyty…

Nie będę już przedłużał, dodam tylko, że naprawdę warto zapoznać się z tym materiałem. Uważajcie jednak, bo łatwo odbić się od niego jak od ściany, jest po prostu ciężkostrawny, jak zwykły posiłek po kilkudniowej libacji… To nie jest muzyczka do słuchania w samochodzie podczas rodzinnej wycieczki.

Nie słyszałem wydanego cztery lata temu debiutu Königreichssaal, ale wystarczył rzut oka na zdjęcie zespołu w Internetach, i już wiedziałem, że to będzie dobre. Papa Artur, koleś już leciwy, w żonobijce, w towarzystwie dwóch o połowę młodszych chłopaków (synowie?) na cmentarzu. Wyglądają jakby kogoś tam zaciukali, tudzież wykopali. No dobra, ale do rzeczy. „Psalmen'o'delirium” to album numer dwa, przynoszący jakieś czterdzieści minut polskiego black metalu. I bynajmniej nie chodzi mi w tym przypadku o język, w jakim napisano teksty (bo pod tym względem mamy tu autentyczną wieżę Babel), choć i nasza mowa faktycznie w drugiej części płyty się pojawia. Bardziej chodzi mi o klimat tych kompozycji, z których naprawdę bije ten charakterystyczny dla rodzimego black metalu sznyt. W pierwszej chwili moje skojarzenia zwróciły się w kierunku choćby takich hord jak Mord’A’Stigmata, Furia, Odraza czy Cultes Des Ghoules, aczkolwiek nazw wymienić by tu można o wiele więcej. Faktem niezaprzeczalnym jednak jest, iż Königreichssaal wszelkie wpływy przekuwają na swój własny sposób, tworząc z nich własną wizję muzyczną. Dzięki naprawdę przemyślanym aranżom muzycy tworzą przenikającą chłodem atmosferę. Głównie za sprawą bardzo wyważonego sposobu na budowanie klimatu, tasowania kontrastami oraz wokalnym wariacjom, dzięki czemu materiał ten potrafi niesamowicie wciągnąć. Sporo tutaj lodowatych tremolo, a także mistycznych zwolnień oraz sporej garści smaczków, nie wychylających się od razu przed szereg, uwalniających się powoli z kolejnymi odsłuchami. Tempo kompozycji utrzymane jest raczej w rewirach średnich, choć napięcie towarzyszące muzyce sprawia, że chwilami jest ona niczym wyrywający się do galopu koń, bardzo umiejętnie trzymany w ryzach przez doświadczonego jeźdźca. Owszem, panowie potrafią przyspieszyć i zasypać śnieżnym blizzardem, ale i odpowiednio podkręcić objawy choroby toczącej ich muzykę. Poza tym, największą zaletą tych siedmiu numerów jest ich niezwykle wyrównany poziom. Tutaj nie ma niczego wciśniętego na siłę, każdy fragment ma swoje zadanie, a wszystkie razem tworzą nierozerwalny monolit. Stąd też „Psalmen'o'delirium” słucha się na jednym wdechu, a kiedy po wybrzmieniu ostatniego dźwięku zaczerpniemy głęboko powietrza, chce się owo doświadczenie powtarzać po raz kolejny. Fani polskiej sceny będą tym krążkiem zachwyceni. A i niektórzy malkontenci zapewne zwrócą na niego uwagę, chyba że są już do końca głusi. Jak dla mnie bardzo dobry materiał, zdecydowanie wybijający się ponad przeciętność. W tej muzyce niezaprzeczalnie mieszka zło. Silna rekomendacja!

Stało się – pochodzące z Lewina Brzeskiego black metalowe (z grubsza) trio Königreichssaal W KOŃCU trafiło pod skrzydła dobrej krajowej wytwórni. Przyznaję, że wieść o wydaniu drugiego pełniaka zespołu przez znane i lubiane Godz ov War Productions bardzo mnie ucieszyła, gdyż ta radząca sobie do tej pory bez wielkiej medialnej promocji formacja jak mało kto na rodzimej scenie zasługuje według mnie na znacznie większy rozgłos. Żeby jednak pewien balans został zachowany, zespół na te szersze wody próbuje wypłynąć za sprawą Psalmen’o’delirium, czyli swojego zdecydowanie najmniej przystępnego jak do tej pory wydawnictwa.

Nie mogłem się nachwalić Witnessing the Dearth (recenzja) oraz EPki Loewen (recenzja) i obie te płyty uznaję za zdecydowanie lepsze metody zapoznania się z twórczością Königreichssaal niż ich najnowsze dziecko. Niestety Psalmen’o’delirium nie doczeka się zbyt wielu peanów z mojej strony, jednak wydaje mi się to niejako spójne z wizją kapeli na ten krążek. Bo czy zanurzanie się w odmęty obłędu może należeć do przyjemnych? Raczej nie, a właśnie w takim klimacie obraca się nowe dzieło zespołu – skomponowane w miażdżącej większości przez Ateusa dźwięki kipią złem i szaleństwem, a ta niecodzienna i nieprzyjemna atmosfera zdaje się narastać z utworu na utwór, wielojęzyczne (dosłyszałem język polski, niemiecki, angielski i łacinę) wokale dezorientują, potrafią również przybrać formę pijanych wrzasków i majaczeń (w czym z pomocą przychodzą sample z polskich filmów „Pętla” i „Diabeł”). Do tego dochodzi nieco przybrudzone brzmienie i sprzyjające mu mocno średnie tempo – pod kątem klimatu jest to zdecydowanie najbardziej dopracowane wydawnictwo Königreichssaal…

… jednak tak jak wspomniałem, jest to klimat bardzo ciężki, a budujące go deliryczne odjazdy czynią Psalmen’o’delirium wydawnictwem o wiele trudniejszym w odbiorze, niż poprzednie płyty w dorobku tria i już teraz wiem, że będę do tego krążka powracał najrzadziej z dotychczasowej trójki. Nie pomaga też fakt, że poza świetnym podniosłym otwieraczem Iskarja oraz singlowym Rubikon brakuje mi tu riffów, do których by się chciało wracać, w gruncie rzeczy nieobecna jest ta specyficzna chwytliwość i hipnotyczność, która złapała mnie za jaja na Witnessing the Dearth. Zdecydowanie tym razem postawiono na atmosferę, co z racji perfekcji w osiągnięciu tego celu może część słuchaczy po prostu odstraszyć. Nie odstraszy ich za to na pewno bardzo ładne wydanie w digibooku, które w przeciwieństwie do bijącej z muzyki zespołu brzydoty będzie ozdobą na każdej półce z płytami.

Mam więc w stosunku do Psalmen’o’delirium ambiwalentne odczucia – z jednej strony zespół znowu „dowiózł”, nagrywając mocną płytę o niepodrabialnej, chorej atmosferze, z drugiej jednak perfekcyjna realizacja tego celu okazała się trochę mieczem obosiecznym, przez który przycisk „repeat” w pilocie do mojego odtwarzacza raczej nie musi się obawiać zbyt częstego używania. Wierzę jednak, że płyta ta zwróci uwagę przynajmniej części tych osób, które o istnieniu Königreichssaal jeszcze nie wiedziały, i tak czy siak nie mogę się doczekać tego, co Lewinianie wykombinują na następnym krążku. Widziałem również, że ruszyli koncertowo, a więc z automatu trafiają na moją listę zespołów „do zobaczenia”.

The Polish black metal trio Königreichssaal has just released their second full-length album, “Psalmen’o’Delirium”, and it feels like they have opened a door towards a battle ridden by insanity. Devil against God, obscurity against light, evil forces against light and morality. As they state in their Bandcamp page: “Psalmen’o’delirium reveals seven shades of madness, a moral journey with downfalls, possession and the constant will to rebuild the soul and body. The personality is torn apart, the emerging body remains READY FOR BATTLE!” Here’s the ultimate question: are YOU ready??

This album has a high level of madness, indeed. It is shown through vocals that seem to be vomited by a devil possessed soul at times, and other times by a tormented inhabitant of a psychiatric hospital. In fact, I believe that the lyrics of these seven tracks are delusions of a cracked mind, constantly breaking down, representing the eternal struggle of the demonic and dark against the divine and luminous. Lies against truth, who will win in the end?

Musically it’s quite diverse, to say the least… The tone is always dark, menacing, like something wicked is lurking in the shadows and about to jump on you. There can be pure black metal with all the blast beats and these deranged vocals I was talking about; sometimes the pace slows down and goes into the realms of doom, some keyboards add a special atmosphere making it even crazier… The opener “Iskarja” is a good example. Also in “Rubikon”, a track that’s quite calmed at the beginning and it turns into madness as it progresses, but it remains quite slow until the final minute, with the constant icy guitar in the background and some of the sickest vocals in this album.

“Psalmen” is another standout, I particularly enjoy the first minute and a half, with totally crazy vocals and drums as the guides, and cold guitars in the background. Howls, cries, laments filled with insanity, you can find all these and more in this song. An emotional violin provides some lucidity and madness becomes something beautiful. But the two final minutes of this track explode into chaos, there’s no other way to finish this. “Anatema” is an intense and totally crazy song, vocals exploring a wide range of insanity. And not only this; lyrically, it’s like a crazy journey of a damned person towards their last destiny, the day of judgment and the sentence of death… and finally, the execution. The music is erratic, nothing conventional, it’s mostly black metal but it also contains slow tempos and multiple changes, with that insanity approach…

I particularly love the way in which the album reaches the end; the closing track, “Satyros”, it’s intense and thick, and it has a sense of anguish that floods your brain, and lyrics match the music perfectly.

It’s hard to keep sanity while listening to this album, constantly diving into the realms of madness, and non conventional musically. When it reaches the end, better you take a deep breath and say to yourself that this was just a nightmare.

Papa Artur, koleś już leciwy, w żonobijce, w towarzystwie dwóch o połowę młodszych chłopaków (synowie?) na cmentarzu. Wyglądają jakby kogoś tam zaciukali, tudzież wykopali. No dobra, ale do rzeczy. „Psalmen'o'delirium” to album numer dwa, przynoszący jakieś czterdzieści minut polskiego black metalu. I bynajmniej nie chodzi mi w tym przypadku o język, w jakim napisano teksty (bo pod tym względem mamy tu autentyczną wieżę Babel), choć i nasza mowa faktycznie w drugiej części płyty się pojawia. Bardziej chodzi mi o klimat tych kompozycji, z których naprawdę bije ten charakterystyczny dla rodzimego black metalu sznyt. W pierwszej chwili moje skojarzenia zwróciły się w kierunku choćby takich hord jak Mord’A’Stigmata, Furia, Odraza czy Cultes Des Ghoules, aczkolwiek nazw wymienić by tu można o wiele więcej. Faktem niezaprzeczalnym jednak jest, iż Königreichssaal wszelkie wpływy przekuwają na swój własny sposób, tworząc z nich własną wizję muzyczną. Dzięki naprawdę przemyślanym aranżom muzycy tworzą przenikającą chłodem atmosferę. Głównie za sprawą bardzo wyważonego sposobu na budowanie klimatu, tasowania kontrastami oraz wokalnym wariacjom, dzięki czemu materiał ten potrafi niesamowicie wciągnąć. Sporo tutaj lodowatych tremolo, a także mistycznych zwolnień oraz sporej garści smaczków, nie wychylających się od razu przed szereg, uwalniających się powoli z kolejnymi odsłuchami. Tempo kompozycji utrzymane jest raczej w rewirach średnich, choć napięcie towarzyszące muzyce sprawia, że chwilami jest ona niczym wyrywający się do galopu koń, bardzo umiejętnie trzymany w ryzach przez doświadczonego jeźdźca. Owszem, panowie potrafią przyspieszyć i zasypać śnieżnym blizzardem, ale i odpowiednio podkręcić objawy choroby toczącej ich muzykę. Poza tym, największą zaletą tych siedmiu numerów jest ich niezwykle wyrównany poziom. Tutaj nie ma niczego wciśniętego na siłę, każdy fragment ma swoje zadanie, a wszystkie razem tworzą nierozerwalny monolit. Stąd też „Psalmen'o'delirium” słucha się na jednym wdechu, a kiedy po wybrzmieniu ostatniego dźwięku zaczerpniemy głęboko powietrza, chce się owo doświadczenie powtarzać po raz kolejny. Fani polskiej sceny będą tym krążkiem zachwyceni. A i niektórzy malkontenci zapewne zwrócą na niego uwagę, chyba że są już do końca głusi. Jak dla mnie bardzo dobry materiał, zdecydowanie wybijający się ponad przeciętność. W tej muzyce niezaprzeczalnie mieszka zło. Silna rekomendacja!

Stało się – pochodzące z Lewina Brzeskiego black metalowe (z grubsza) trio Königreichssaal W KOŃCU trafiło pod skrzydła dobrej krajowej wytwórni. Przyznaję, że wieść o wydaniu drugiego pełniaka zespołu przez znane i lubiane Godz ov War Productions bardzo mnie ucieszyła, gdyż ta radząca sobie do tej pory bez wielkiej medialnej promocji formacja jak mało kto na rodzimej scenie zasługuje według mnie na znacznie większy rozgłos. Żeby jednak pewien balans został zachowany, zespół na te szersze wody próbuje wypłynąć za sprawą Psalmen’o’delirium, czyli swojego zdecydowanie najmniej przystępnego jak do tej pory wydawnictwa.

Nie mogłem się nachwalić Witnessing the Dearth (recenzja) oraz EPki Loewen (recenzja) i obie te płyty uznaję za zdecydowanie lepsze metody zapoznania się z twórczością Königreichssaal niż ich najnowsze dziecko. Niestety Psalmen’o’delirium nie doczeka się zbyt wielu peanów z mojej strony, jednak wydaje mi się to niejako spójne z wizją kapeli na ten krążek. Bo czy zanurzanie się w odmęty obłędu może należeć do przyjemnych? Raczej nie, a właśnie w takim klimacie obraca się nowe dzieło zespołu – skomponowane w miażdżącej większości przez Ateusa dźwięki kipią złem i szaleństwem, a ta niecodzienna i nieprzyjemna atmosfera zdaje się narastać z utworu na utwór, wielojęzyczne (dosłyszałem język polski, niemiecki, angielski i łacinę) wokale dezorientują, potrafią również przybrać formę pijanych wrzasków i majaczeń (w czym z pomocą przychodzą sample z polskich filmów „Pętla” i „Diabeł”). Do tego dochodzi nieco przybrudzone brzmienie i sprzyjające mu mocno średnie tempo – pod kątem klimatu jest to zdecydowanie najbardziej dopracowane wydawnictwo Königreichssaal…

… jednak tak jak wspomniałem, jest to klimat bardzo ciężki, a budujące go deliryczne odjazdy czynią Psalmen’o’delirium wydawnictwem o wiele trudniejszym w odbiorze, niż poprzednie płyty w dorobku tria i już teraz wiem, że będę do tego krążka powracał najrzadziej z dotychczasowej trójki. Nie pomaga też fakt, że poza świetnym podniosłym otwieraczem Iskarja oraz singlowym Rubikon brakuje mi tu riffów, do których by się chciało wracać, w gruncie rzeczy nieobecna jest ta specyficzna chwytliwość i hipnotyczność, która złapała mnie za jaja na Witnessing the Dearth. Zdecydowanie tym razem postawiono na atmosferę, co z racji perfekcji w osiągnięciu tego celu może część słuchaczy po prostu odstraszyć. Nie odstraszy ich za to na pewno bardzo ładne wydanie w digibooku, które w przeciwieństwie do bijącej z muzyki zespołu brzydoty będzie ozdobą na każdej półce z płytami.

Mam więc w stosunku do Psalmen’o’delirium ambiwalentne odczucia – z jednej strony zespół znowu „dowiózł”, nagrywając mocną płytę o niepodrabialnej, chorej atmosferze, z drugiej jednak perfekcyjna realizacja tego celu okazała się trochę mieczem obosiecznym, przez który przycisk „repeat” w pilocie do mojego odtwarzacza raczej nie musi się obawiać zbyt częstego używania. Wierzę jednak, że płyta ta zwróci uwagę przynajmniej części tych osób, które o istnieniu Königreichssaal jeszcze nie wiedziały, i tak czy siak nie mogę się doczekać tego, co Lewinianie wykombinują na następnym krążku. Widziałem również, że ruszyli koncertowo, a więc z automatu trafiają na moją listę zespołów „do zobaczenia”.

The Polish black metal trio Königreichssaal has just released their second full-length album, “Psalmen’o’Delirium”, and it feels like they have opened a door towards a battle ridden by insanity. Devil against God, obscurity against light, evil forces against light and morality. As they state in their Bandcamp page: “Psalmen’o’delirium reveals seven shades of madness, a moral journey with downfalls, possession and the constant will to rebuild the soul and body. The personality is torn apart, the emerging body remains READY FOR BATTLE!” Here’s the ultimate question: are YOU ready??

This album has a high level of madness, indeed. It is shown through vocals that seem to be vomited by a devil possessed soul at times, and other times by a tormented inhabitant of a psychiatric hospital. In fact, I believe that the lyrics of these seven tracks are delusions of a cracked mind, constantly breaking down, representing the eternal struggle of the demonic and dark against the divine and luminous. Lies against truth, who will win in the end?

Musically it’s quite diverse, to say the least… The tone is always dark, menacing, like something wicked is lurking in the shadows and about to jump on you. There can be pure black metal with all the blast beats and these deranged vocals I was talking about; sometimes the pace slows down and goes into the realms of doom, some keyboards add a special atmosphere making it even crazier… The opener “Iskarja” is a good example. Also in “Rubikon”, a track that’s quite calmed at the beginning and it turns into madness as it progresses, but it remains quite slow until the final minute, with the constant icy guitar in the background and some of the sickest vocals in this album.

“Psalmen” is another standout, I particularly enjoy the first minute and a half, with totally crazy vocals and drums as the guides, and cold guitars in the background. Howls, cries, laments filled with insanity, you can find all these and more in this song. An emotional violin provides some lucidity and madness becomes something beautiful. But the two final minutes of this track explode into chaos, there’s no other way to finish this. “Anatema” is an intense and totally crazy song, vocals exploring a wide range of insanity. And not only this; lyrically, it’s like a crazy journey of a damned person towards their last destiny, the day of judgment and the sentence of death… and finally, the execution. The music is erratic, nothing conventional, it’s mostly black metal but it also contains slow tempos and multiple changes, with that insanity approach…

I particularly love the way in which the album reaches the end; the closing track, “Satyros”, it’s intense and thick, and it has a sense of anguish that floods your brain, and lyrics match the music perfectly.

It’s hard to keep sanity while listening to this album, constantly diving into the realms of madness, and non conventional musically. When it reaches the end, better you take a deep breath and say to yourself that this was just a nightmare.

More experimental than "Delusions", "Distorted Logic" shows the band's natural progression which would lead to the inception of DARKANE!

Additionally, we will be including band's 1997 "Infected" Demo as well as the band's 2 DEMISE (pre-Agretator) demos "Prophesy" from 1991 and "Visions" from 1992. This is a must-have to see where Darkane started out, or just for fans of Death Metal in General!

This CD will be designed after the original 1996 self financed released release, taking elements from the original layout with attention to detail, even down to the logo and typeface for a touch of nostalgia. Also included are brand new liner notes from original founding member and guitarist / vocalist Pierre Richter.

Additionally, a Japanese-style OBI-Strip will be included.

This unique entity became much more known towards the end of the 90’s when they changed their name to Darkane, and when they started churning out releases on more regular bases. Those releases by all means have their moments, but the actual truth is that under the Agretator moniker the guys created much better music, more technical, more atmospheric, and with more heart and soul put into it. The full-length was an awesome display of talent, intricate thrash/death summing up the best from acts like Death, Pestilence, Invocator, and Sadus. It was only the fading interest in all things old school that prevented the guys from getting wider exposure.

They didn’t give up, though, and shot another effort two years later, the 5-tracker reviewed here. It was self-released, without proper label support, but was another splendid exhibition of musical dexterity. To the band’s fans’ surprise, though, the style is quite different from the blistering hyper-active one on the debut; it has mutated into a complex form of modern thrash, not much death metal anymore, one that sides with meisterwerks like Coroner’s “Grin”, Aftermath’s “Eyes of Tomorrow”, Aleister’s “Tribal Tech”, and early Meshuggah. “Chains of Retribution” is a dispassionate, still pretty atmospheric chugger with spastic speedier accumulations and hectic time-shifts, a not very predictable roller-coaster the semi-shouty death metal vocals ruling over the proceedings with fierce determination, with great leads serving the requisite doze of melodic “sanity”.

The title-track has a most logical quiet inauguration which alternates with jumpy robotic rhythms the contrasting symbiosis intercepted by a magnificent melodic lead section that gets repeated again towards the end assisting an enchanting choral inclusion, the surreal feel aggravated by tortured shouts splashed on the jolting, chuggy musical background. “Water” is a nice balladic instrumental the lead guitarist the main participant for the umpteenth time, and “Virtual Tragedy” is an outstanding futuristic technicaller the choppy riff-patterns quickly replaced by smattering speedy crescendos the latter the only overt reminder of the preceding full-length; twisted mazey guitars come to the fore mid-way before another passage of virtuous fast-tempos appears to wrap up this masterpiece. “Non-Human Level” is another highlight with listless gallops riding through a sterile mid-period Obliveon-esque scenery the vocals acquiring an authoritative, semi-declamatory timbre with stylish technical decisions galore plus a couple of atmospheric stops along the way which involve the bass more prominently as a finishing touch in league with alluring flamenco guitars; a unique musical combination adding more original nuances to this short, but utterly captivating affair.

This is a very appropriate transition the band changing the format, but preserving their creative flair all over, even managing to beat the debut in terms of out-of-the-box thinking and more audacious musicianship. It’s not as spaced out as, say, Pestilence’s “Spheres” or Atheist’s “Elements”, and not as overtly modernized as Invocator’s “Weave the Apocalypse”, to provide comparisons with the three brethren of the full-length, and consequently stays the closest to the band’s initially chosen style. There was certainly room for more abstract ways of expression, and those materialized more tangibly on the “Infected” demo three years later which contained three cuts of mechanical dry, djent-like rifforamas, an obvious nod to mid-period Meshuggah and to the industrial heritage of acts like Soulstorm, Puncture, and Grope.

The transformation to Darkane was complete by the end of the decade, and the guys haven’t looked back since. With six albums the band have managed to establish themselves on the forefront although it seems as though the magic from those “uncertain” times of distortions and delusions from the beginning will continue to elude them.
