Testament to amerykański zespół thrash metalowy z Berkeley w Kalifornii. Powstał w 1983 roku pod nazwą Legacy. Jego obecny skład to gitarzysta rytmiczny Eric Peterson, wokalista Chuck Billy, gitarzysta Alex Skolnick, basista Steve Di Giorgio i perkusista Chris Dovas. W ciągu lat Testament doświadczył wielu zmian w składzie, a Peterson jest jedynym pozostałym oryginalnym członkiem, choć od tego czasu ponownie zjednoczyli się ze Skolnickiem, który był poza zespołem od 1992 do 2005 roku. „Nightmare Desolation” to album, który muzycznie ma sporo cech wspólnych z opisywanym przeze mnie całkiem niedawno innym materiałem, mianowicie chodzi mi o THOSE WHO BRING THE TORTURE i ich „Necromancer”. Podobieństwa? Otóż oprócz, iż łączy oba zespoły ten sam wydawca, to w obu zespołach udziela się Dennis Blomberg, przy czym DEPESEBLO to jego solowy projekt w którym rządzi niepodzielnie, odpowiadając na „Nightmare Desolation” za całe instrumentarium, wizję muzyki, jej brzmienie i ogólny koncept zespołu. Ale i to nie wszystko, bo oba band’y łączy jeszcze coś – szwedzki old school’owy death metal. I na tym kończę porównania obu załóg, bo jakby nie patrzeć, to zupełnie dwa odrębnie działające metalowe twory. „Nightmare Desolation” to przede wszystkim staromodny decior, a zamysłem autora tego materiału było skomponowanie tej dość, a nawet bardzo melodyjnej jego formy. Co zresztą Dennis wcielił w życie, właśnie w takim oto stylu komponując osiem piosenek. Oczywiście, do głównego rdzenia muzyki DEPESEBLO dostało się też w kilku momentach trochę przeszczepów z innych niw „hałasu”. I tak oto znajdują się tu zarówno black metalowe wtręty jak i zalatujące zgniłym grind’em zakończone ostrymi nożami baty. Jest też tu jakaś forma dziwnej przestrzeni, choć ja do końca wzbraniałbym się przed określeniem tego albumu mianem „klimatyczny”. Całkiem solidnie to wszystko wypada. Są momenty gdzie DEPESEBLO lutuje podbródkowym, są chwile gdzie melodie wwiercają się w ucho, nie brakuje intensywnych napadów, fajnych rozwiązań i przyzwoitych pomysłów. Same utwory oblane zostały całkiem przyzwoitym brzmieniem etc. Słucha się tego całkiem dobrze, choć w ogólnym rozrachunku czuję jakiś niedosyt. Jak na debiut jest przyzwoicie, ale uważam, iż brakuje mimo wszystko „Nightmare Desolation” takiego, rasowego bujania. Niekiedy to wszystko jest zbyt zachowawcze, a powinno częściej przyjebać po jajach, wbić głodne kły drapieżnika w tętnicę ofiary w oczekiwaniu, aż spłynie ostatnia kropla krwi z otwartych ran. Przy całej solidności tej płytki, mimo wszystko życzyłbym sobie większego pazura. Jak ktoś lubi klimaty w stylu HYPOCRISY, wczesnego IN FLAMES czy AMON AMARTH, może próbować swoich sił z „Nightmare Desolation”.

I na tym kończę porównania obu załóg, bo jakby nie patrzeć, to zupełnie dwa odrębnie działające metalowe twory. „Nightmare Desolation” to przede wszystkim staromodny decior, a zamysłem autora tego materiału było skomponowanie tej dość, a nawet bardzo melodyjnej jego formy. Co zresztą Dennis wcielił w życie, właśnie w takim oto stylu komponując osiem piosenek. Oczywiście, do głównego rdzenia muzyki DEPESEBLO dostało się też w kilku momentach trochę przeszczepów z innych niw „hałasu”. Insekty Na Jajach czy Insekty NJ to łódzka kapela punk grająca w latach 1984-86. Łupali szybki, ostry czadowy hcpunk. Grupa grała w składzie : Cyku - vocal, Siara - gitara, Zeus - bas i Stopa - bębny. Przez moment na perkusji grał Wózek, który szybko znalazł się potem w Moskwie. Za namową kapeli, zaczął robić próby z podwójną centralą w bębnach i tak zagrał jedyny koncert z nimi, właśnie nota bene z Moskwą. Linia (r)ewolucyjna holenderskiego Pestilence do 1993 roku mogła robić naprawdę olbrzymie wrażenie jak genialny był to zespół, począwszy od thrash/deathu skończywszy na technicznym death metalu. W każdej z tych stylistyk powstawały im dzieła znakomite, kapitalnie skomponowane i wyróżniające się sporą oryginalnością. Na tle omawianego "Spheres"...poprzednie trzy płyty jednak jawią się jako raptem wierzchołek możliwości Holendrów! Czwarty longplay Pestilence przeniósł muzykę Patricka Mameli i reszty zgrai bowiem w tak nietypowe i pomysłowe rejony, że album z miejsca spotkał się z totalnym niezrozumieniem i olaniem zewsząd, ale też ze zwątpieniem ze strony muzyków w dalszą działalność zespołu.
Sensu (i racjonalnych odpowiedzi) nie zamierzam się w tym na siłę doszukiwać, ale jedno jest pewne, po dziś dzień to mój ulubiony album od Pestilence, absolutnie niesłusznie niedoceniony i pokazujący sporą zaściankowość wydawcy/słuchaczy w tamtym czasie! Owszem, muzyka Holendrów stała się tu cholernie wymagająca, nietuzinkowa i niełatwa w odbiorze, toteż rozczarowani "Testimony Of The Ancients" zupełnie nie zrozumieją głównej idei "Spheres", to jednak jest na tej płycie to coś co niemal natychmiast przykuwa uwagę i sprawia, że ma się do czynienia z czymś unikalnym, przez co chce się katować swój słuch bardziej i bardziej. Holendrom udało się po prostu wnieść do swojej muzyki sporo ryzykownych i intrygujących nowości, a przy tym nie zapomnieć, gdzie tkwi sedno ich stylu.

Pierwsze co się rzuca w słuch dotyczy brzmienia. Te stało się klaustrofobiczne, (pozornie) nieprzyjazne, wyalienowane - wprost idealnie wstrzelone w koncept okładki. Odnosi się wrażenie jakby zespół zupełnie na serio zamknął się w jakiejś kapsule i tam nagrywał całość materiału. Druga rzecz - syntezatory gitarowe. Doskonale imitują klawisze (o czym wyraźnie nakreśla dla niedowiarków notka w książeczce: there are no keyboards on this album) i świetnie wykorzystano je także w formie solówek (!). Efekt jest powalający. Kolejne - pojawienie się basisty Jeroena Paula Thesselinga. Jego partie wyszły znacznie ciekawiej od Choya, dużo wyraźniej towarzyszą one pozostałym instrumentom i jeszcze fajniej ozdabiają muzykę jazzowymi patentami. Idąc dalej, geniusz "Spheres" objawia się od strony większej ilości pomysłów oraz klimatu z progresywnego metalu (cuś jakby nawiązując do Voivod), bardziej histerycznych wokali Mameliego, dających kosmiczne wytchnienie interludiów (w takim "Personal Energy" jednak też coś podobnego występuje), zakręconych solówek gitarowych obu Patricków i nieco bardziej "mechanicznego" bębnienia Marco Foddisa. No a wszystko to bez wyparcia death metalowego oblicza muzyki Pestilence (podobnie jak u Nocturnus), czego przykładem chociażby "Soul Search", "Changing Persepctives", "The Level Of Perception" czy "Demise Of Time".

Na "Spheres", Holendrzy po raz ostatni objawili się jako zespół zjawiskowy i tak odważnie modyfikujący swój styl. Mimo ogólnego pominięcia i rzekomych zarzutów o przekombinowanie, "Spheres" to - podobnie jak "Focus" czy "Elements" - dzieło genialne, świetnie łączące kosmos z deathem i przy tym mocno wyprzedzające swój czas. Aż szkoda, że tak wyjątkowy krążek położył działalność zespołu na długie lata.

Trochę Subiektywizmu


The (r)evolution line of Dutch Pestilence until 1993 could make a really huge impression how brilliant the band was, ranging from thrash/death to technical death metal. In each of these styles, they created brilliant cds, perfectly composed and distinguished by considerable originality. Against the background of the discussed "Spheres"...the previous three albums, seem to be like the substitute of the Dutch possibilities! The fourth Pestilence lp brought the music of Patrick Mameli and the rest of the band in such unusual and imaginative regions, that the album was immediately met with a total incomprehension and disapproval from everywhere, but also with doubts on the part of the musicians in the further activity of the band.

I am not going to try to find the meaning (and rational answers) in it, but one thing is certain, to this day it's my favorite album from Pestilence, absolutely underestimated and showing a lot of parochialism of the publisher/listeners at that time! Yes, the music of the Dutch has become very demanding, extraordinary and not easy to listen to, so disappointed listeners by "Testimony Of The Ancients" will not understand the main idea of ​​"Spheres" at all, but there is "something" on this album that almost immediately attracts attention and makes that you are dealing with something unique, which makes you want to torture your hearing more and more. The Dutch simply managed to bring a lot of risky and intriguing novelties to their music, and at the same time, not to forget where the essence of their style was.

The first thing that catches the ears is the sound. These became claustrophobic, (seemingly) unfriendly, alienated - perfectly shot into the concept of the cover. One has the impression that the band seriously closed themselves in a capsule and recorded all the material there. Second thing - guitar synthesizers. They perfectly imitate keyboards (which is clearly indicated for doubters in the note in the booklet: there are no keyboards on this album) and they were also perfectly used in the form of solos (!). The effect is amazing. Another - the appearance of bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling. His parts are much more interesting than Choy, accompanies other instruments much more clearly and decorate the music with jazz patents even more nicely. Going further, the genius of "Spheres" manifests itself from the more hysterical Mameli vocals, more ideas and the atmosphere of progressive metal (something as if referring to Voivod), giving a cosmic respite to interludes (in such "Personal Energy" something similar also occurs), twisted guitar solos by both Patrick's and a slightly more "mechanical" drumming by Marco Foddis. And all this without displacing the death metal face of Pestilence's music (similar to Nocturnus), such as "Soul Search", "Changing Persepctives", "The Level Of Perception" or "Demise Of Time" show.

On "Spheres", the Dutch revealed for the last time as a phenomenal band and so boldly modifying their style. Despite the general omission and alleged accusations of over-combining, "Spheres" is - similarly to "Focus" or "Elements" - a brilliant cd, perfectly combining space with death metal sound, and at the same time well ahead of its time. It's a pity that such a unique album put out the band's activity for many years.

Holendrom udało się po prostu wnieść do swojej muzyki sporo ryzykownych i intrygujących nowości, a przy tym nie zapomnieć, gdzie tkwi sedno ich stylu.

Pierwsze co się rzuca w słuch dotyczy brzmienia. Te stało się klaustrofobiczne, (pozornie) nieprzyjazne, wyalienowane - wprost idealnie wstrzelone w koncept okładki. Odnosi się wrażenie jakby zespół zupełnie na serio zamknął się w jakiejś kapsule i tam nagrywał całość materiału. Druga rzecz - syntezatory gitarowe. Doskonale imitują klawisze (o czym wyraźnie nakreśla dla niedowiarków notka w książeczce: there are no keyboards on this album) i świetnie wykorzystano je także w formie solówek (!). Efekt jest powalający. Kolejne - pojawienie się basisty Jeroena Paula Thesselinga. Jego partie wyszły znacznie ciekawiej od Choya, dużo wyraźniej towarzyszą one pozostałym instrumentom i jeszcze fajniej ozdabiają muzykę jazzowymi patentami. Idąc dalej, geniusz "Spheres" objawia się od strony większej ilości pomysłów oraz klimatu z progresywnego metalu (cuś jakby nawiązując do Voivod), bardziej histerycznych wokali Mameliego, dających kosmiczne wytchnienie interludiów (w takim "Personal Energy" jednak też coś podobnego występuje), zakręconych solówek gitarowych obu Patricków i nieco bardziej "mechanicznego" bębnienia Marco Foddisa. No a wszystko to bez wyparcia death metalowego oblicza muzyki Pestilence (podobnie jak u Nocturnus), czego przykładem chociażby "Soul Search", "Changing Persepctives", "The Level Of Perception" czy "Demise Of Time".

Na "Spheres", Holendrzy po raz ostatni objawili się jako zespół zjawiskowy i tak odważnie modyfikujący swój styl. Mimo ogólnego pominięcia i rzekomych zarzutów o przekombinowanie, "Spheres" to - podobnie jak "Focus" czy "Elements" - dzieło genialne, świetnie łączące kosmos z deathem i przy tym mocno wyprzedzające swój czas. Aż szkoda, że tak wyjątkowy krążek położył działalność zespołu na długie lata.

Trochę Subiektywizmu


The (r)evolution line of Dutch Pestilence until 1993 could make a really huge impression how brilliant the band was, ranging from thrash/death to technical death metal. In each of these styles, they created brilliant cds, perfectly composed and distinguished by considerable originality. Against the background of the discussed "Spheres"...the previous three albums, seem to be like the substitute of the Dutch possibilities! The fourth Pestilence lp brought the music of Patrick Mameli and the rest of the band in such unusual and imaginative regions, that the album was immediately met with a total incomprehension and disapproval from everywhere, but also with doubts on the part of the musicians in the further activity of the band.

I am not going to try to find the meaning (and rational answers) in it, but one thing is certain, to this day it's my favorite album from Pestilence, absolutely underestimated and showing a lot of parochialism of the publisher/listeners at that time! Yes, the music of the Dutch has become very demanding, extraordinary and not easy to listen to, so disappointed listeners by "Testimony Of The Ancients" will not understand the main idea of ​​"Spheres" at all, but there is "something" on this album that almost immediately attracts attention and makes that you are dealing with something unique, which makes you want to torture your hearing more and more. The Dutch simply managed to bring a lot of risky and intriguing novelties to their music, and at the same time, not to forget where the essence of their style was.

The first thing that catches the ears is the sound. These became claustrophobic, (seemingly) unfriendly, alienated - perfectly shot into the concept of the cover. One has the impression that the band seriously closed themselves in a capsule and recorded all the material there. Second thing - guitar synthesizers. They perfectly imitate keyboards (which is clearly indicated for doubters in the note in the booklet: there are no keyboards on this album) and they were also perfectly used in the form of solos (!). The effect is amazing. Another - the appearance of bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling. His parts are much more interesting than Choy, accompanies other instruments much more clearly and decorate the music with jazz patents even more nicely. Going further, the genius of "Spheres" manifests itself from the more hysterical Mameli vocals, more ideas and the atmosphere of progressive metal (something as if referring to Voivod), giving a cosmic respite to interludes (in such "Personal Energy" something similar also occurs), twisted guitar solos by both Patrick's and a slightly more "mechanical" drumming by Marco Foddis. And all this without displacing the death metal face of Pestilence's music (similar to Nocturnus), such as "Soul Search", "Changing Persepctives", "The Level Of Perception" or "Demise Of Time" show.

On "Spheres", the Dutch revealed for the last time as a phenomenal band and so boldly modifying their style. Despite the general omission and alleged accusations of over-combining, "Spheres" is - similarly to "Focus" or "Elements" - a brilliant cd, perfectly combining space with death metal sound, and at the same time well ahead of its time. It's a pity that such a unique album put out the band's activity for many years.

SEMIRAMIS, consisting of very young musicians at the time, were one of the several RPI bands that managed to make just one album in the early/mid seventies, Dedicato a Frazz (1973). I wrote about it roughly like this in my Finnish-language book on international progressive rock:
"Already the cover art gives some ideas about the style and possible influences, and more than to the front cover I refer to the gatefold's inner painting of dark, autumnal atmosphere, which I find in spirit somewhere between In the Court of the Crimson King and Nursery Cryme. But one cannot blame Semiramis for imitating anyone. In the highly dynamic and occasionally very intensive music there's not a single moment that would directly point at a certain band. Well, maybe the clinging percussion on the instrumental 'Uno Zoo di Vetro' resembles the Larks-era King Crimson. For the intensity the album can be compared also to Van der Graaf Generator, even if the sound per se hasn't got a lot in common -- with the possible exception of the occasional aggressive edge on the vocals.

Guitars, drums and bass are being played quite heavily without plainly falling on the heavy rock side. On the more central role are keyboards, varying from harpsichord and church organ flavours to thick synth carpets and jazz-nuanced electric piano. Here and there the intensity of the music is broken by more delicate passages, but perhaps in the end the album suffers from sameyness to a certain degree."

In retrospect, I think I didn't listen to the album as dedicatedly as it would have deserved, when I wrote that last, somewhat reserved sentence. Perhaps I was just a couple of further listening sessions away of naming the album as one of the finest RPI classics, at least on the heavier end of the spectre (as opposed to the pastoral end, which is closer to my heart). I could have re-listened to the studio album also, before writing this review, to find out how my reception might have changed. But even without doing that, I firmly believe that this concert performance from April 2017 simply sounds better. The sound is, how to put it, more open and nuanced, ie. the live factor does really good for this music. The line-up is missing the original vocalist Michele Zarrillo, which may be another reason for slightly more amiable impression. Now, don't start thinking this performance would be less dynamic or 'weaker' than the original 1973 recording. -- Actually I wish someone who's admired the album for ages would review this DVD, just to get another point of view and a closer look on the sonic differences. Anyway, for me, SEEING the band performing the music live often brings the music closer to me. This is exactly what happened now.

This is a DVD+CD set, with identical contents on both, except that the CD contains one bonus studio track, 'Mille Universi'. It's closer to the electric guitar oriented hard rock than the progressive finesse of the concert, which performs the original album Dedicato a Frazz in its entirety plus nearly 9-minute 'Morire per Guarire' not found on the album. Very powerful prog song it is. The DVD extras are a brief picture show and interviews of the band members. This leads us to one remarkable minus on this release: there are no English subtitles (although English language is used on the leaflet), which means non-Italian speaking viewers won't get much out of these interviews. Sad.

Another feature that I'm not quite convinced of, is the way each track is preceded by a near-minute narration, written and spoken by Giampero Artegiani (not listed on the band line-up). The leaflet contains Italian words for both these narrations and song-lyrics. Again, I would have appreciated English subtitles -- or printed translations -- at least for the narrations. On the first viewing of the show these narrations felt quite OK, but most likely they start irritating me on further viewings (on the CD these sections are separate tracks and therefor can be skipped, unlike on the DVD). Sonic level is faultless, and also from the visual point of view the concert film is very good. Several camera angles, a good balance of close-ups and broader scenes, and a fairly good lighting. Close to the ending a human-like, finely dressed doll is hanged up from its neck. Otherwise there are no theatrical aspirations on behalf of the stage settings or the band.

Despite some minor negative remarks I strongly recommend this set if you're interested in the Rock Progressivo Italiano of the classic era, whether you already have the original album or not.
