To jest limitowana, europejska reedycja genialnego, psych-progresywnego, brytyjskiego albumu - wraz z czterema utworami dodatkowymi, nagranymi w 1968 pod nazwą Uriel (bez gitarzysty w składzie). Wydany oryginalnie w 1969 roku, jeden z najbardziej legendarnych i wręcz powalających psychodelicznych albumów w historii rocka był połączeniem stylistyki wczesnych Pink Floyd, nieistniejących jeszcze Hawkwind (z okresu debiutu), szczypty elektrycznego bluesa i fascynujących, kosmicznych improwizacji na gitarę i mocno rozkręcone Hammondy.

Pod tą tajemniczą nazwą kryła się oczywiście progresywna formacja Egg oraz 18-letni wówczas gitarzysta Steve Hillage (potem w Khan i Gong). Skromny, ale wypełniony treścią booklet zawiera projekty graficzne z oryginalnych winylowych wydań - w tym rzadką, tylną okładkę edycji hiszpańskiej z urokliwą, psychodeliczną łodzią podwodną. Doskonały dźwięk!



Z tą grupą jest naprawdę ciekawa sprawa. Już samo to, że została utworzona na JEDEN dzień (dosłownie!) wydaje się wręcz nieprawdopodobne. Ten jeden dzień spędziła w studiu nagraniowym, by zarejestrować materiał muzyczny. Dodam – FENOMENALNY materiał, który stał się sensacją brytyjskiego rocka progresywnego po wsze czasy! A gdy dodam, że zrobili to muzycy, którzy mieli wówczas po osiemnaście lat, ktoś z boku popuka się w czoło i powie: „Eee, niemożliwe!” A jednak…

Cofnijmy się w czasie o dwa lata, do roku 1967. To właśnie wtedy, w renomowanej City Of London School, wokalista i gitarzysta Steve Hillage, basista Mont Campbell, grający na klawiszach Dave Stewart, oraz pozyskany przez ogłoszenie w „Melody Maker” perkusista Clive Brooks pod koniec tamtego roku utworzyli grupę URIEL. Uriel to imię jednego z biblijnych archaniołów, a inspiracją do nazwania tak zespołu, jak twierdzi Dave Stewart, był poemat Johna Miltona „Raj utracony”. Zadebiutowali w młodzieżowym klubie w Sheen. Na początku ich repertuar opierał się na coverach – głównie były to przeróbki Jimiego Hendrixa, Cream i The Nice. Jednak z czasem zaczęli tworzyć własny repertuar, a nawet nagrali płytę „demo” zatytułowaną „Egoman„. Nagrania URIEL długi czas skrywane w prywatnych archiwach muzyków doczekały się publikacji dopiero w grudniu 2007 roku na płycie „Arzachel Collectors Edition by Uriel” wydanej przez Egg Archive (CD69-7201)- wytwórnię należącą do członków grupy Egg/Arzachel. Znalazło się na niej sześć nagrań plus cała płyta ARZACHEL.

Latem 1968r. po raz ostatni w tym składzie Uriel wystąpił na wyspie Wight w Ryde Castle Hotel, po czym Steve Hillage opuścił zespół. Powód? Gitarzysta skończył edukację w szkole średniej i podjął naukę na Kent University w Cantenbury. Pozostała trójka postanowiła kontynuować karierę. Dzięki przypadkowej znajomości z Billem Jellettem trio rozpoczęło występy w słynnym The Middle Earth Club, zmieniając nazwę na Egg (styczeń 1969). Chwilę później podpisują kontrakt z wytwórnią Decca i w maju wychodzi ich pierwsza (kapitalna!) płyta „Egg”.

W tym samym czasie muzycy często odwiedzali bar kawowy na Gerrard Street. Wpadali tam na dobrą kawę, ciasto i pyszne lody, a także by pogawędzić sobie z żoną Billa Jelletta, która pracowała jako kelnerka. Tu poznali właściciela małego studia nagraniowego Evolution, Petera Wickera, który widział ich koncerty jeszcze gdy grali pod starą nazwą. Pewnego dnia pijąc kawę do kawiarni wszedł… Hillage, który właśnie przyjechał na wakacje po rocznym pobycie na uniwersytecie. Kiedy wspólnie dojadali porcję lodów, podekscytowana żona Jelletta oznajmiła im, że dzwoni Peter Wicker z bardzo interesującą dla nich propozycją: jeden z najbliższych dni ma wolny i gdyby co, jest do ich dyspozycji. Zasugerował przy tym, by nagrali coś w konwencji rocka psychodelicznego. Warunek był jeden: koszt nagrania wynosił 250 funtów i całość trzeba było zapłacić od ręki. Akurat z tym sobie poradzili. Ale był jeszcze jeden problem. Pod jakim szyldem powinny pojawić się na rynku te nagrania? Uriel formalnie nie istniał, a na użycie nazwy Egg nie pozwalała Decca. Muzycy znaleźli więc trzecie rozwiązanie: projekt ochrzcili nazwą ARZACHEL. Jak wyjaśnił potem Dave Stewart pochodzi ona od nazwy krateru na Księżycu, który nazwano na cześć hiszpańskiego astronoma pochodzenia arabskiego żyjącego w XI wieku (faktycznie nazywał się Al-Zarqali). Aby nie narazić się szefom Decci ukryli się pod wymyślnymi pseudonimami. I tak Dave Stewart został Samem Lee-Uff (tak jak jego szkolny profesor łaciny), Clive Brooks to Basil Dawning (znienawidzony nauczyciel matematyki), Steve Hillage przyjął nazwisko, które „dobrze nadawało się na próby mikrofonu” Simeon Sasparella, zaś Mont Campbell stał się na ten moment Njerogi Gategaką. Album nagrany na „setkę” w sobotnie popołudnie ukazał się w czerwcu 1969 roku.

Płyta zawiera sześć dość zróżnicowanych utworów, Dominuje najprzedniejsza psychodelia; można w niej także dostrzec wpływy hard rocka, bluesa jak i garażowego brytyjskiego rocka z połowy lat 60-tych. Nasuwają się porównania do The Nice, Rare Bird, czy Procol Harum. Z tą jednak różnicą, że nagrania te … biją te wszystkie grupy razem wzięte na głowę intensywnością, polotem, wyobraźnią, niezliczona ilością pomysłów i niesamowitym, nieziemskim wręcz klimatem. Kocham brzmienie organów Hammonda, więc dla mnie jest to absolutny szczyt psychodelicznego grania. Potężne, mocno przesterowane kościelne dźwięki Hammonda dominują na tej płycie niepodzielnie. Finezyjne partie gitary – ostre i bardzo przestrzenne, momentami bluesowe – nadają poszczególnym kompozycjom dodatkowego kolorytu. No i świetnie zapełniająca muzyczny plan bardzo ciężka sekcja rytmiczna. To wszystko razem MUSIAŁO dać powalający efekt. Naprawdę trudno mi jest pisać o tej muzyce. Trzeba jej posłuchać. Inaczej się nie da! Jakiekolwiek słowa bym nie napisał, w najmniejszym stopniu nie oddadzą jej wielkości.

Płytę otwiera najkrótszy, prawie trzy minutowy „Garden Of Earthly Delights” będący wprowadzeniem do tego co czeka nas za chwilę. Bo ten następny, to hipnotyczny, awangardowo-psychodeliczny „Azathoth”, z odjechanymi solówkami gitar i katedralnym brzmieniu organów rzadko słyszalne na innych płytach. Utwór ponury i przygnębiający jak, nie przymierzając, obrazy Hieronima Bosha ukazujące średniowieczne wyobrażenia piekła i czyśćca. Z pięknym, cudownie wplecionym, klasycyzującym bachowskim tematem na organach. Z krzykami i jękami potępionych dusz i z koszmarnym głosem recytującym łaciński tekst.

W podobnym klimacie utrzymany jest „Queen St. Gang” z tą różnicą, że tu na plan pierwszy wybija się pulsujący rytm basu przez co kompozycja nabiera bardzo transowego charakteru. Zamykający stronę „A” oryginalnego LP utwór „Leg” (w rzeczywistości będący genialną przeróbką kompozycji Roberta Johnsona „Rollin’ And Tumblin'”) to jak The Nice z debiutanckiego albumu, tyle że na mocnym haju. Mosiężny kawał bardzo ciężkiego bluesa i najdrapieżniejsza jego interpretacja jaką znam! Druga strona albumu zawierała tylko dwie kompozycje. Pierwsza to 10-cio minutowy ciężki, bluesujący „Clean Innocent Fun”, który gdzieś w połowie drogi przeistacza się w iście rozpędzony, „kosmiczny” jam gdzie Pink Floyd spotyka się z Hawkwind tyle, że… mocniejszy. Niemożliwe? Możliwe! Całość kończy siedemnastominutowy „Metempsychosis„. Utwór, który fascynuje do dziś to połączenie wspomnianych już The Nice, wczesny Pink Floyd i Hendrixa. Całość skrzy się mnogością muzycznych pomysłów i niestandardowych rozwiązań harmonicznych, a wyjątkowy narkotyczny klimat sprawia, że trudno się od niego uwolnić, a uzależnić w mig.

To jest album marzenie. Padły tu już porównania do Procol Harum, The Nice i Pink Floyd, ale tak naprawdę album jest nieporównywalny do jakiejkolwiek płyty. Niewiarygodne, że tak młodzi ludzie byli w stanie zarejestrować muzykę tak doskonałą, tak dojrzałą, tak WYBITNĄ w kilka godzin w skromnym studiu i znikomym budżetem. Jacek Leśniewski w swojej książce „Brytyjski Rock w latach 1961-1979. Przewodnik płytowy” (wyd. Karga 2005) napisał fajne zdanie, które pozwolę sobie zacytować: „Jeśli ktoś nie słyszał tej płyty, to nie ma prawa wypowiadać się na temat psychodelicznego rocka.” Kropka.

Okładkę płyty zaprojektował Dave Stewart. Jeśli dobrze jej się przyjrzeć znajdziemy tam „magiczną” liczbę 250 – nawiązanie do budżetu płyty. Album wydany w czerwcu 1969 roku przez Evolution był wznawiany (wielokrotnie nielegalnie) w różnych odcieniach okładek; oryginalne wydanie charakteryzowało się „szarym” obrazkiem bez napisu ARZACHEL. I jeszcze jedno: trzeci utwór, „Queen St. Gang” w pierwszym tłoczeniu miał tytuł „Soul Thing”, co jeszcze bardziej podnosi i tak już jego wysoką cenę (ponad 1000 euro) na płytowych giełdach.

Po wyjściu ze studia drogi tria i Steve’a Hillage’a rozeszły się. Muzycy Egg wydali w sumie trzy wyśmienite albumy. Po rozwiązaniu zespołu w 1972 roku Mont Campbell współpracował z Hatfield & The North i National Health… Clive Brooks przez dwa lata grał z Grounghogs, a później z Liar… Dave Stewart został członkiem Ottawa Music Company, potem przyjął współpracę Hillage’a w grupie Khan. Grał także w Hatfield & The North, kultowym Gong i w zespole Billa Bruforda. Nagrywał też z powodzeniem swoje płyty solowe… Steve Hillage założył efemeryczny, ale bardzo udany zespół Khan, współpracował z zespołu Gong, a od 1975 roku realizował solowe projekty muzyczne. Był też producentem płyt takich wykonawców jak Kevin Ayers, Tony Banks, Blink, Can, czy Charlatans...

Grupa Arzachel istniała tylko przez kilka godzin, w trakcie których zarejestrowała jeden z najbardziej kultowych - choć nieco zapomniany - albumów psychodeliczno rockowych. Był to projekt czwórki wciąż nastoletnich muzyków, którzy wcześniej występowali razem pod szyldem Uriel - gitarzysty Steve'a Hillage'a, grającego na elektrycznych organach Dave'a Stewarta, basisty Monta Campbella i perkusisty Clive'a Brooksa. Uriel był typowym dla tamtych czasów zespołem grającym blues rocka z elementami psychodelii, a na jego repertuar składały się głównie przeróbki Jimiego Hendrixa, Johna Mayalla i Cream. Gdy w połowie 1968 roku ze składu odszedł Hillage, pozostali muzycy zmienili nazwę na Egg i zaczęli grać bardziej progresywną muzykę, z czasem stając się jednym z ważniejszych przedstawicieli Sceny Canterbury. Zanim jednak zarejestrowali swój pierwszy longplay, pojawił się pomysł nagrania psychodelicznego albumu z udziałem byłego muzyka, zawierającego utwory napisane w czasach Uriel. Ponieważ jednak Egg miał już podpisany kontrakt z Deccą, a ten album miał się ukazać nakładem małej wytwórni Evolution, muzycy musieli użyć innej nazwy (i wystąpić pod pseudonimami). Zamiast wrócić do szyldu Uriel, zdecydowali się przyjąć zupełnie nowy.

Eponimiczny album Arzachel jest doskonałym przykładem psychodelii w brytyjskim wydaniu. Można co prawda zarzucać, że taka muzyka jest spóźniona o jakieś dwa lata, a garażowe brzmienie pozostawia wiele do życzenia (całkowity koszt nagrania wyniósł 250 funtów). Ale to i tak jedno z najlepszych wydawnictw w tym stylu. Całość składa się z sześciu utworów mocno zatopionych w brzmieniu organów, z przeplatającymi się partiami wokalnymi Hillage'a i Campbella, oraz (nie zawsze obecnymi) zgrabnymi gitarowymi popisami pierwszego z nich. Pierwszą stronę winylowego wydania wypełniają cztery krótkie utwory. Otwierający całość, niespełna trzyminutowy "Garden of Earthly Delights" to po prostu typowo psychodeliczna, dość banalna piosenka. To samo można by napisać o balladowym "Azathoth", gdyby nie mocno odrealniona część instrumentalna. W instrumentalnym "Queen St. Gang" (na pierwszym wydaniu zatytułowanym "Soul Thing" - tak, jak oryginał Keitha Mansfielda) zwraca uwagę bardziej uwypuklona gra sekcji rytmicznej, z bardzo fajną linią basu, ale to znów przede wszystkim popis Stewarta. W bardziej dynamicznym "Leg" w końcu pojawia się nieco więcej gitary, przypominającej o bluesrockowych korzeniach grupy. To, co najlepsze, wypełnia jednak drugą stronę winylowego wydania. To tylko dwa, za to bardzo rozbudowane utwory, o mocno jamującym charakterze. Dziesięciominutowy "Clean Innocent Fun" to kolejne przypomnienie o korzeniach muzyków, zwracające uwagę świetnymi gitarowymi popisami Hillage'a. Z kolei blisko siedemnastominutowy "Metempsychosis" to już kompletnie zwariowany, prawdziwie psychodeliczny jam.

"Arzachel" to prawdziwy relikt hippisowskich czasów. Dziś może odrzucać swoim archaizmem, a już w chwili wydania amatorskie brzmienie musiało kłuć w uszy. Jest to momentami naiwne, choć urokliwe granie, niepozbawione jednak naprawdę pomysłowych momentów, czego dowodzi przede wszystkim najdłuższe nagranie. Dla większości wielbicieli tego typu muzyki ten album to prawdziwa perła, ja jednak nie jestem w pełni przekonany. Choć dziś jestem w stanie docenić go nieco bardziej, niż gdy poznawałem go przed laty.

Dni coraz krótsze, szybko robi się ciemno. Noce, wieczory – czyli te chwile, w których muzyka brzmi najcudniej również coraz dłuższe. Dla mnie – i myślę, że nie tylko dla mnie - listopad i grudzień to najlepszy czas na słuchanie muzyki. Mamy ochotę na słuchanie muzyki bardziej spokojnej, subtelnej, stonowanej, melancholijnej… Ale jest taka płyta/taki zespół, który słucham z tą samą uwagą o każdej porze roku, w każdym miejscu z takimi samymi wypiekami na twarzy: ARZACHEL. Zespół brytyjski utworzony na jeden dzień, tylko na nagranie tej jednej płyty (muzycy otrzymali za tę pracę 250 funtów) przez muzyków grupy EGG plus gitarzysta/wokalista, kolega z grupy URIEL, Steve Hillage.

Na płycie wydanej w 1969 roku przez małą wytwórnię Evolution muzycy przyjęli pseudonimy (od znienawidzonych nauczycieli – muzycy byli zaraz po szkole, mieli po 17-18 lat: Simeon Sasparella (Hillage), Sam Lee-Uff (Dave Stewart – organy), Njerogi gategaka (Mont Cambell – voc, b, p), Basil Dowling (Clive Brooks –dr). Powstał album jedyny w swoim rodzaju. Nie ma i już na pewno nie będzie drugiej takiej płyty. Nagranej w kilka godzin, bez żadnej ingerencji wytwórni, chyba bez wielkich finansowych oczekiwań, bez ciśnienia… Jeśli można jakiś album nazwać kultowym, to właśnie „Arzachel” się do tego idealnie nadaje…

Sześć utworów. Od pierwszego na płycie, krótkiego „Garden Of Earthly Deligths” do najdłuższego „Metempsychosis” (ponad 16 minut! – to totalnie szalony, rozimprowizowany kawałek) na płycie cudownie pobrzmiewa tak zwany rock progresywny (właśnie o to w tej nazwie chodzi… tu idealnie pasującej do zawartości albumu). Rock progresywny, ale z ogromną ilością psychodelii i jazz-rocka . Rare Birds, Procol Harum, The Nice??? Grupy te, trochę podobne – zostały daleko w tyle za Arzachel. Płyta swoim klimatem przypomina mi studyjną część „Ummagumma” Pink Floyd, ale jest jeszcze bardziej szalona, intensywna i psychodelicznie popieprzona (za przeproszeniem – ale taka jest). Najlepszy kawałek – „Azathoth” – cudeńko całego starego (nie tylko) rocka. Najbardziej szalony – ostatni na płycie. Zastanawiam się, ciekawe kto dotrwa do końca płyty? Oj, nie jest łatwo niewprawionemu słuchaczowi…

Podobno nadchodzi epidemia grypy… Czosnek, cytryna, miodzik… Włączamy „Arzachel” i do łóżeczka… (niekoniecznie sami – czego wszystkim życzę)… Naprawdę trzeba mieć ten album...

VIC Records, cd, Re-release of the sold out, legendary debut of Sweden’s FURBOWL. FURBOWL was formed in 1991 when Johan Liiva left Carnage and hooked up with his old buddy Max Thornell on drums (both would form HEARSE in the 90’s). After a few demos FURBOWL recorded their debut album ‘Those Shredded Dreams’ in 1991, the album was produced by Carnage / Carcass guitar player and long-time friend of the band, Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY), Michael also played some leads on the album. (And not surprisingly Michael asked Johan to join Arch Enemy some years later).

This re-issue contains the legendary FURBOWL debut ‘Those Shredded Dreams’ and as bonus eleven tracks the band recorded before and after their debut album. All in all, a true monument for the most underrated Swedish death metal band from the early 90’s! Extensive liner notes from Johan, Max and Michael! ‘Death ‘N Roll before it was invented. Furbowl sure was an unique band, and I urge you all to seek out all of their recordings’ - Daniel Ekeroth, author of ‘Swedish Death Metal’.

Formed in 2016, Stockholm-by-way-of-London power rockers THE RIVEN have carved a uniquely compelling place for themselves, drawing musical influence from a wide array of genres. Hard rock, old prog, early heavy metal, and even simply rock ‘n’ roll itself: no mossy stone is left unturned by THE RIVEN. And when combined with their lyrical themes – from everyday life all the way to the fantasy-inspired, with sometimes both intertwining – the quintet have forged their own path, displaying a sound fitting firmly within the late ‘70’s and early ‘80s but with an effervescence that feels palpably modern.

Where their second album, 2022’s Peace and Conflict, felt like a watershed moment – moving from the “powerful rocker” of their eponymous debut album in 2019 to an emotive, electric, but no-less-earthy sort of NWOBHM – THE RIVEN sound positively poised for another breakthrough with their forthcoming third full-length, Visions of Tomorrow. Presciently titled, Visions of Tomorrow struts and sways with that sort of star quality that can only come from total, utter self-belief…and absolutely stunning songs! The sound is more present and raw then before, ear-effortlessly exuding dynamics lost to most “hard rock” bands. THE RIVEN here offer a sumptuous feast of familiar-yet-fresh heavy rock built on massive HOOKS and HEART. Not for nothing have they become a finely honed ensemble; touring nonstop has been the band’s lifeblood for years now, and that tangible sense of magick swirls about each of these 11 anthems. New drummer Elias Jonsson pumps that blood with an almost “laidback urgency,” and the rest of THE RIVEN let rip with what they liken more “complete” songwriting: the songs may be shorter than previous ones, but they’re undeniably more action-packed and nuanced.

Interestingly, while writing for Visions of Tomorrow was done in Stockholm in late 2023, THE RIVEN was selected for an international studio residency as part of the Swedish national arts association, and the band lived for a few days at the highly prestigious studio Fascination Street in Örebro. The album was mixed and co-produced by Robert Pehrsson. (The Hellacopters, Tribulation, Dead Lord among others). Lyrically, Visions of Tomorrow showcases a band that is frustrated about how the world is run, who’s in charge, and what is about to happen to the rest of us. Musically, it showcases a band that can handle their instruments and is willing to explore and go on musical journeys. Jarl powraca z nowym albumem w Zoharum. „Synapse Variation Report” to pięć utworów o różnych wariantach lub pięć raportów o różnych nazwach.Album nawiązuje do dwóch poprzednich wydawnictw „Neurotransmitters Sphere Music” i „Receptor Radiation”. Właściwie te trzy albumy można traktować jako trylogię, odnajdując w nich podobieństwa zarówno ze względu na poruszaną tematykę jak i pod kątem brzmienia. W układzie nerwowym synapsa to struktura, która pozwala neuronowi (lub komórce nerwowej) przekazywać sygnał elektryczny lub chemiczny do innego neuronu lub celu.

Podobnie jak w przypadku ostatnich albumów Jarla, dźwięk na albumie jest hipnotyczny, psychodeliczny, melodyjny, oparty na sekwencerze, pulsujący, zarówno powtarzalny, jak i powściągliwy, co oznacza intensywne dźwięki z różnymi kolorowymi strunami. Przygotujcie się na około 60 minut wariacji synaps.

The album has a connection to the two previous albums "Neurotransmitters Sphere Music" and recent album on Zoharum "Receptor Radiation". In fact all three album can be seen as a trilogy since they are similar both in theme and sound. In the nervous system, a synapse is a structure that allows a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron or a target.

As the recent albums from Jarl, the sound on the album is hypnotic, psychedelic, melodic, sequencer based, pulsating, both repetitive and restrained which means intense sounds with different colour cords. Be prepared for around 60 minutes of Synapse Variation.
