Vangelis (gr. Βαγγέλης), właśc. Ewangelos Odiseas Papatanasiu (gr. Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου; ur. 29 marca 1943 w Agrii koło Wolos, zm. 17 maja 2022 w Paryżu - grecki kompozytor muzyki elektronicznej i filmowej. Vangelis urodził się 29 marca 1943 roku w Agrii koło Wolos, w Grecji. Edukację muzyczną rozpoczął w wieku 4 lat, a już w wieku 6 lat miał swój pierwszy publiczny występ, na którym prezentował własne kompozycje. Vangelis był w dużej części samoukiem - odmawiał pobierania lekcji gry na pianinie, a w ciągu swojej kariery nie zdobył formalnej wiedzy na temat notacji muzycznej. Uczył się muzyki poważnej, malarstwa i reżyserii filmowej na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Atenach. Zyskał światową sławę dzięki swoim wyjątkowym, często epickim kompozycjom, które łączyły elementy muzyki elektronicznej, symfonicznej i rockowej. Wstawka zawiera album stworzony z myślą o wykorzystaniu nowego systemu syntezatorów cyfrowych i samplingu - stąd nazwa „Direct”, nawiązująca do procesu tworzenia muzyki bezpośrednio w studio elektronicznym, z minimalną ingerencją tradycyjnych instrumentów.

The second album by Donbass brutallers SLAUGHTER BRUTE “Systematic Transmutations” is undoubtedly pushing the limits of Russian technical brutal death metal. Mighty and at the same time harmonious and balanced material is catchy from the first chords and up to the ending of the album. Frequent tempo changes, remarkable solos and diverse bass lines will not make bored even the most biased listeners. Finally, the album has an excellent artwork. Altogether, everything is made in keeping with the best traditions of technical yet brutal death metal!



With a handle like Slaughter Brute, you'd expect this Ukrainian act to pull out all the stops and deliver one of the most grinding, grueling and grotesque experiences in death metal. And yet, there's a curious level of refinement to their compositional skills which renders their sophomore outing Systematic Transmutations slightly less crushing and more adventurous than I was predicting. Not that it's necessarily anything new in terms of technique or versatility, but there's just so much happening on this album that you're never given a moment's breath to think much about it. Of course, all of the traits common to brutal/tech death metal are present: pavement pounding double bass beats, guttural barked vocals, punching grooves and arpeggio skills all collapse into a controlled chaos.

This is 100% one of those mildly progressive, surgical and scientific albums which is not going to appeal to anyone whose idea of death metal ends at around 1993 and can't seem to stomach anything that isn't simply an endless recycling of those early aesthetics. Slaughter Brute has far more in common with acts like Spawn of Possession, Psycroptic, Necrophagist and Beyond Creation than Grave and Incantation. Systematic Transmutations is also a pretty clean recording, with little atmospherically occurring beyond the instruments themselves. The harried, machine gun percussion is polished and placed straight against the ears, while the guitars tone is thin and punchy enough to handle the rhythmic acrobatics, with plenty of digitized effects on the lead harmonies and upstart melodies to counteract the mute-streams and picking spasms. The bassist is particularly good, shifting between a low tone and some plunkier hysterics, and I found myself often following what he was rolling out beneath the frenetic arpeggios and contained chugging sequences. In truth, all of the instrumentation is up front and personal, clean but not so sterilized that it doesn't feel reproducible in a live environment, and if you think about it, this is fairly essential for a band performing which such precision timing.

The lyrics revolve around mind control and other forms of scary experimentation, dystopian technologies and a few traumatic situations like "Victim of Incest", so it's not strictly the gore, rape, and necrophiliac violation; it may, at times, actually try to make a point, and it's clearly more unique and interesting than their first album. Though the band's logo and the title font here are kinda cheap looking, the artwork is quite excellent, an H.R. Giger-styled fusion of bio-organic forms and machinery with a sexy symmetry that provides almost an optical illusion. Ultimately, I got quite a lot out of the record after numerous listens, with particular favorites in "Not Learned Integrants", "Hypoxemia Neural Phenom" and "Cyanotic Purulence". The intro and interlude pieces are well done, short ambient segues which reflect the band's futuristic ideas. It's neither perfect or incredibly memorable, and it won't be for everyone, since it's almost the antithesis of the Autopsy and Incantation worship currently trending; but if you're open to this sort of spurious and clinical modern death, then these guys should be added to your radar.

I can usually tell of I am going to like or dislike an album after a few moments. A few skips from track to track, hear the vocals, the production etc. I can get a general idea pretty quick. Sure, there are anomalies, growers, late bloomers and stuff I’m just not feeling at that time in my life I might appreciate later.

Thus was the case of Germany’s veteran death metal act Discreation, whom I was not familiar with despite existing since 2001 and having three previous albums under their belt. It’s a classic example of a band that left a pretty ‘meh’ initial impression from the album’s first few tracks, but as other tracks from the album’s second half randomly popped up on my ipod, the band warranted further investigation and in the end I ended up really enjoying the band’s no frills take on death metal.

Immediate comparisons are clearly Vader, largely due to the vocals of Kai Müller-Lenz, which have a authoritative gruff, but clear bellow akin to Piotr Wiwczarek. The music has some similarities as well being thrashy, burly and percussively dominant but with just a shade of clever melody and restraint, which imbues a bit of Hypocrisy. One could also look to label mates Weak Aside for similar delivery, though not as war mongering or simplistic.

Either way, there’s a handful of tracks on Procreation of the Wretched that bring the pain, especially in the later two thirds of the material, where things seem to get in to more of a stern groove and march, as opposed to sheer blasting. After the album’s first two rather forgetful tracks, “Planetary Punishment” and “Descending to Abysmal Darkness”, things start to pick up about halfway through “Megacorpse”, signalling the improvement in the album. Then the fucking beefy trundle of the title track really gets things going and it’s ON for the rest of the album as each of the following 6 tracks just seems more confident, destructive and memorable, and thusly the whole album becomes so as well.

Don’t get me wrong, like the bands I’ve mentioned as comparisons, this isn’t changing death metal , but it sure does everything pretty well perfectly within the paradigms so staunchly championed in the 90s. No techy noodling, no sweeps, no intellectual prose, just bludgeoning double bass backed beefy riffs and lyrics about war, fire, skulls and destruction and all that other negative shit that death metal extolled in its formative years. The likes of “To Cosmic Shores”, steam train chug of “Decapitation Marathon” and the moody pummeling of closer “Dead Certainties” is just the very epitome of what death metal was and should be. No frills, no gimmicks. Just… Death. Fucking. Metal.
