Being the new kid on the scene does not preclude one from being fast-tracked to veteran status, even when your highly impressive track record only reaches back a little over 5 years ago. Such is the status that any thinking man would convey upon the New York-based death metal with a progressive edge outfit Contrarian, a band that makes such persons their target audience. Having already hit the ground running with a string of inventive albums that both recall the glory days of death metal’s progressive stint in the early to mid 90s and builds upon it, not the least of which being their impressive showing on Their Worm Never Dies just last year, one might think that this highly ambitious quintet would stop for a respite. Naturally one would be wrong in doing so, as in the closing weeks of this tumult-dominated first year of the 2020s they’ve outdone themselves with another solid studio entry.

As with prior offerings, this band’s fourth studio LP Only Time Will Tell is a thought-provoking excursion into philosophical inquiry, told through the lens of conceptual storytelling with a highly fantastical plot. To the rank newcomer, the cloaked and hooded figure often adorning this fold’s album art is actually progressive death metal’s answer to Orden Ogan’s Alister Vale, namely an enigmatic mascot dubbed “The Cloaked Contrarian” who functions as the protagonist of an ongoing storyline. This installment sees the inquisitive character embarking on an adventure via time travel, seeking absolution and fulfillment outside of his native place in history, and the accompanying music mirrors this lofty and vivid undertaking. Truth be told, this is an album where the concept serves to explain the meaning behind the genre-bending excitement and technical gymnastics, but also takes a backseat to them as well.

Where this album finds itself diverging a bit from Contrarian’s past works is a greater degree of consonant melodic interplay and a somewhat swifter pace that corresponds more to the latter days of the original progressive death heyday. It still bears a strong similarity to the seminal offerings of Atheist and Pestilence, but put into more of a melodic adjacent packaging that reminds heavily of Death’s 1998 swansong The Sound Of Perseverance. In fact, the most notable deviation from the late 90s classic in question here is that vocalist Cody McConnell has a deeper and more orthodox guttural barking style that sounds closer to early 90s Chris Barnes rather than the glass-shattering shrieks Schuldiner was belting out just prior to his Control Denied project emerging. But the vocal work proves to be the most static element at play here, as the jarring looseness of the drumming, the Sadus-inspired bass noodling and busy guitar work continually steal the show.

All inventive ventures begin with the familiar, and this album proves to be no exception. The opening crusher “In A Blink Of An Eye” lays down the odd-timed mayhem like it’s been lifted fresh off the death metal press circa 22 or so years ago, leaning in heavy on the dueling guitar harmonies and busy riff work like an exaggerated answer to several select faster offerings, yet also throwing in a few curveballs like a fleeting organ line in the song’s closing moments. Then again, the similarly elaborate “The Final Hour” vacillates between a grim chaotic assault and what could almost pass for a few triumphant power/progressive moments. As things progress onward, things almost seem like they want to veer into quasi-melodeath territory, notably during the lead guitar dominated moments of “Case Closed” and that almost cleanly tonal gruff vocal segment on the shred happy extravaganza “Scarlet Babylon”. Perhaps the greatest stylistic deviations are the two ambient-tinged interludes “Beat The Clock” and “Only Time Will Tell”, which are notably trippy and really bring draw out the album’s cosmic character.

Time isn’t the only thing on this album’s side, though it is interesting to note that despite its highly elaborate stylistic inclination, it is a notably concise and compact offering at just less than 35 minutes, in keeping with its 90s death metal influences. It does finish things on a grand hurrah of an epic closer “Your Days Are Numbered”, which recalls some of Schuldiner’s early progressive strides on Spiritual Healing in the guitar work, but the rest of what occupies this opus gets to the point with time to spare. Relative to its predecessors it comes off as more inspired largely by avoiding keeping the energy level high and having a clearer separation between periods of quieter reflection between the moments of technically apt mayhem and occasional brutality. One might be tempted to hope for time travel to become a reality so that this band’s next outing can be heard all the quicker, but this is the sort of album that makes one appreciate the present and long primarily for future replays, especially for those wanting some vintage 90s nostalgia to go with their forward-looking progression.

During its initial four-year existence, The Bears lived a pop music lifetime. It enjoyed an auspicious, boisterous beginning in 1985 as the next big thing. The buzz was considerable. Sold-out gigs worldwide, two studio albums and multiple media blitzes pointed to a long-term future. But by 1988, disillusion stemming from punctured promises and evaporating support—not to mention a serious dose of bad luck—sealed the band's fate.

Typical music industry shenanigans, some might say. But The Bears were supposed to be different. After all, this was a band with a serious pedigree. It was comprised of guitarist-vocalist Adrian Belew, formerly of King Crimson, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa; and drummer Chris "Deathy" Arduser, guitarist-vocalist Rob Fetters and bassist Bob Nyswonger—three quarters of the Raisins, a popular, renowned act that enjoyed several regional hits across America.

The Bears crafted eclectic, intelligent pop songs full of gorgeous harmonies, inventive lyrics and first-rate musicianship. The Cincinnati, Ohio-based act struck a rare balance between the approachable and artistic. Further, it was a band with a plan. It predicted its willingness to work incessantly and do anything but compromise the music could help it win a global audience. What it couldn't predict was the abrupt end of the early-to-mid-'80s pop renaissance that saw the likes of Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson and XTC scoring hits with left-of-center material. Nor could it predict its record label going under in the midst of the tour for its second album. And with Belew simultaneously being courted as David Bowie's musical director and by Atlantic Records for a solo deal, the group's dissolution became inevitable—though they all remained the best of friends...

Jeśli ktoś wyczekiwał, że w 2020 roku na rynku reedycji pojawi się jakiś prawdziwy ‘killer’ to bez wątpienia wiadomość, która dotarła do nas już jakiś czas temu spełniła te oczekiwania w co najmniej 200 %. No ale nie może być inaczej, jeśli jedna z najwybitniejszych płyt w historii muzyki zostaje wydana w wersji 26 (!!!) dyskowej. Album In The Court Of The Crimson King o którym już pisałem na naszym blogu nie wymaga żadnej rekomendacji. Powiedziano o nim chyba wszystko i nie sądzę, aby ktokolwiek, kto zagląda na Rockową płytotekę mógł go nie znać na pamięć. Dlatego zamiast filozofować od razu skupimy się na zawartości najnowszego wydawnictwa legendarnych – King Crimson. Właściwie box nazywać się będzie The Complete 1969 Recordings, ale ponieważ w tym roku zespół nagrał tylko jeden (debiutancki) album i tak wszystko w tym pudełku kręcić się będzie wokół jego zawartości.

Oczywiście opisanie i przeanalizowanie całej zawartości boxu wymagało by co najmniej habilitacji, dlatego zerkniemy na wszystko w nieco bardziej powierzchowny i przystępny sposób. Od dawna oczekiwana, świetnie brzmiąca reedycja wytwórni Eclipse (bijąca na głowę znacznie wcześniejszą, nieprodukowaną, brytyjską wersję Fallout), wydanego w 1969 roku, jedynego albumu kultowej i cenionej w kolekcjonerskich kręgach amerykańskiej formacji. Trio grało dość ciężkiego, gitarowego, momentami bardzo wyrafinowanego i zarazem masywnego rocka, przypominającego trochę skrzyżowanie stylistyki późnych Cream, debiutu Grand Funk i szczypty ówczesnych The Beatles, z zagęszczonymi, zmiennymi rytmami charakterystycznymi dla ówczesnych progresywnych formacji. Z pewnością krążek zrobi na wielu piorunujące wrażenie i choć brak w nim całkowicie innowacyjności, to niewiele współczesnych zespołów death-metalowych może zaoferować tak olśniewający wir kompozytorski i ognistą brutalność. Potencjał tych młodych dżentelmenów sięga trumny.
Emocje płynące z 'Resurrect ' trwają tylko przez pewien czas, zanim cała twórczość stanie się przewidywalna.
Dla tych, którzy po prostu chcą zatracić się w czystej brutalności, ten album będzie strzałem w dziesiątkę. Album to istna rozkosz chaosu, z momentami porywającej energii.

I must confess I have never heard an Orchestra sound quite like this one, but given that this is a metallic quintet from France and not an orchestra at all, perhaps that isn’t surprising. Formed in 2011 in Grenoble, France, a year later they released their debut EP ‘Oppressive Procession’, and performed nearly thirty shows throughout France alongside the likes of Betraying The Martyrs, UltraVomit, Death Mentality, Agnostic Front, Promethee, and many others. That Summer, the band secured a three-week tour of Latin American with Descomunal which included a performance at Ecuador’s QuitoFest. 2013 saw the release of their Klonosphere-issued ‘Architects Of Destruction debut’, and they are now back with their second full length album. When a band states that their influences are Origin, Abominable Putridity, Pathology, Aborted, Carnifex, Job for a Cowboy, Rings of Saturn, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Behemoth, Decapitated, Hour of Penance, Dyscarnate, Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Benighted, Kronos and Rise Of Doom then one knows what to expect even before the first death metal notes make it out of the speakers.

I was a little surprised not to see Cannibal Corpse and Testament in the list, as these guys have obviously been paying close attention to these guys, and not so much of the bombast of the likes of Fleshgod Apocalypse. The vocals are coarse, the drums simply brutal with great blast beats, while the guitars and bass all sing as one. There is a great deal of complexity in this music, with layered arrangements that show how much these guys have played together as they never skip a beat or miss a note. Death metal in its truest form rarely gets much better than this, and the production allows it all to shine as the only thing to do is to keep turning it up louder and louder. Brutal, massively over the top, this is sweat-drenched metal that is essential for any fans of the genre.

Brutalny death metal XXI wieku!!!
A gdybym mógł dać Continuum jedną sugestię... to następnym razem wolałbym, żeby było w nim trochę więcej emocji.

Wow, if this isn’t the starriest compendium witnessed on the death metal circuit so far… luminaries from quite a few technical/progressive outfits (Brain Drill, Flesh Consumed, Decrepit Birth, Rings of Saturn, Inanimate Existence, Deeds of Flesh, etc.) have gotten together with the intention on producing for a change… another compilation of dazzling technical death acrobatics.

In other words, the name of the game remains the same the guys preferring to stick with what they can do best, stupefying the audience with ultra-precise clinical shreds which, from the aforementioned acts, comes the closest to mid-period Deeds of Flesh and Decrepit Birth which in its turn means that fans of the dazzling brutality movement (also Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Grotesque) will be left the happiest in the not very long run (the album is 32-min long).

The debut established the familiar, but totally attention-grapping trajectory with guitar pyrotechnics galore the latter usually served in hyper-speed or thereabouts. On the album here the setting has been preserved to a large extent the guys adding a hefty spacey psychedelic flair to the steel rifforamas, this gimmick immediately felt on the opening “Theorem” that also presents the frequently-interrupted with slower stomping carvings hyper-active template, a multifarious journey which tolerates the melodic pinch harmonics on “A History Denied” and the momentary djent-like stiffness of “Designed Obsolescence”, the latter an involuntary bait thrown in order to lure the Meshuggah and Terminal Function lovers. However, the manic thrashing intensity of the short blitzkrieg “All Manner of Decay” will sweep those away the band increasing the velocity for a rousing happy-blasting finale on the “None So Vile” leftover “Remnants of Ascension” and the more varied but still pretty brutal roller-coaster “Repeating Actions”.

Although there will be some who will question this effort’s validity and significance in an oversaturated with brutal guitar acrobatics contemporary scene, it’s undeniable that an adroitly-performed piece of music will invariably attract the relevant crowd. Nothing short of perfection is expected from such an all-star assembly and the guys deliver in spades, again not offering anything new and ground-breaking, but trying to sum up what their careers have been standing for all these years, quite successfully at that. I’m not quite sure if I’ll be salivating over another similarly-styled offering coming out of their camp in another few years, but right now I see no reason why I shouldn’t be moshing around, risking a severe neck-sprain, also trying to shut this wide-open-due-to-awe mouth of mine in order to avoid swallowing some of the bugs flying around.

On the album here the setting has been preserved to a large extent the guys adding a hefty spacey psychedelic flair to the steel rifforamas, this gimmick immediately felt on the opening “Theorem” that also presents the frequently-interrupted with slower stomping carvings hyper-active template, a multifarious journey which tolerates the melodic pinch harmonics on “A History Denied” and the momentary djent-like stiffness of “Designed Obsolescence”, the latter an involuntary bait thrown in order to lure the Meshuggah and Terminal Function lovers. However, the manic thrashing intensity of the short blitzkrieg “All Manner of Decay” will sweep those away the band increasing the velocity for a rousing happy-blasting finale on the “None So Vile” leftover “Remnants of Ascension” and the more varied but still pretty brutal roller-coaster “Repeating Actions”.

Although there will be some who will question this effort’s validity and significance in an oversaturated with brutal guitar acrobatics contemporary scene, it’s undeniable that an adroitly-performed piece of music will invariably attract the relevant crowd. Nothing short of perfection is expected from such an all-star assembly and the guys deliver in spades, again not offering anything new and ground-breaking, but trying to sum up what their careers have been standing for all these years, quite successfully at that. I’m not quite sure if I’ll be salivating over another similarly-styled offering coming out of their camp in another few years, but right now I see no reason why I shouldn’t be moshing around, risking a severe neck-sprain, also trying to shut this wide-open-due-to-awe mouth of mine in order to avoid swallowing some of the bugs flying around.

Rzadki, limitowany do 500 egzemplarzy europejski CD, będący trwającą 77 minut i naprawdę doskonałą kompilacja bardzo rzadkich, bądź też unikalnych nagrań zespołu z jego wczesnego, przełomowego (tuż przed zdobyciem popularności) okresu - zarejestrowanych pomiędzy styczniem a lipcem 1971 roku (z Billem Brufordem na bębnach i Tonym Kaye'em na organach), podczas tras promujących albumy "Time And The Word" i "The Yes Album".
Płyta zawiera unikalny i bardzo interesujący zestaw nagrań, m.in. kapitalną, rozimprowizowaną, 16-minutową wersję "America" z repertuaru Simon & Garfunkel, 11-minutowy "It's Love" amerykańskiej grupy The Rascals, znane z drugiej płyty, fantastyczne i mocno zmienione wersje progresywnego "Astral Traveller" i absolutnie genialnego "Everydays" z repertuaru Buffalo Springfield i wreszcie rozbudowane, trwające po 11 i 14 minut "Yours Is No Disgrace" oraz "Perpetual Change".
Jakość dźwięku jest perfekcyjna. Moim zdaniem, obok klasycznego "Yessongs" jest to najlepszy koncertowy materiał Yes, jaki kiedykolwiek słyszałem!

Rzadki, limitowany, 80-minutowy CD gromadzący radiowe nagrania brytyjskiego hard-progresywnego zespołu w którym na gitarze grał Laurie Wisefield (od 1974 w Wishbone Ash), natomiast na basie znany z AC/DC - Cliff Williams! Pierwszą część płyty wypełniał blisko 30-minutowy występ z 1972 roku, natomiast resztę CD zajął zagrany w całości na żywo materiał z trzeciego w dyskografii i bez wątpienia najlepszego w karierze albumu 'The Alchemist'. Oparta na brzmieniu dwóch gitar i przypominająca połączenie wczesnego Neila Younga z Wishbone Ash, mocno kombinowana muzyka Home wymaga początkowo kilku przesłuchań, ale potem już nie można się od niej oderwać! Perfekcyjna jakość dźwięku.
