Zespół Blues Fighters powstał w 2021 roku w Poznaniu. Zadebiutował fonograficznie albumem „Pretty Baby” w roku 2022, szybko zdobywając uznanie słuchaczy i krytyków muzycznych. Jeszcze w tym samym roku zespół zdobył Grand Prix Suwałki Blues Festival i zwyciężył w konkursie Polish Blues Challenge. W plebiscycie Blues Top Wielkopolski 2022 (audycja Ryszarda Glogera „Luz Blues” w Radiu Poznań) Blues Fighters wygrał w kategoriach Zespół Roku i Debiut Roku. W roku 2023 reprezentował Polskę na International Blues Challenge w Memphis (USA) i European Blues Challenge w Chorzowie. Został wybrany Zespołem Roku 2023 w plebiscytach Blues Top (kwartalnik „Twój Blues”) i Blues Top Wielkopolski.

Debiut płytowy „Pretty Baby” zdobył uznanie także zagranicą. W lutym 2023 roku w notowaniu Roots Music Report (USA) zajął 1. miejsce na Top 50 Blues Rock Album Chart i 12. miejsce na Top Blues Album Chart. W podsumowaniu rocznym za 2023 rok „Pretty Baby” znalazło się na 28. miejscu na Top Blues Rock Album Chart.
W marcu 2023 płyta miała premierę w BBC Radio 2, w słynnej audycji Cerys Matthews „The Blues Show”. Jest grana w stacjach radiowych w USA, Kanadzie, Anglii, Niemczech, Belgii, Holandii, Francji, Hiszpanii, a nawet Australii. W serwisie Spotify ma słuchaczy w 156 krajach.

Jesienią 2024 roku zmienił się skład zespołu, nowym wokalistą został Grzegorz Kupczyk (Turbo, Ceti, Non Iron), do zespołu dołączył także klawiszowiec Łukasz Jakubowicz. Nakładem Flower Records ukazała się właśnie druga płyta zespołu z tytułem „Firebird”. Słyszymy na niej głównie blues rockowe kompozycje, ale jest także sporo mocniejszych, hard rockowych momentów. Znalazło się także miejsce na chwilę wytchnienia i spokojną swingującą piosenkę.



11 lipca 1969 roku to bardzo ważna data w historii muzyki rockowej. To właśnie tego dnia narodził się legendarny skład Deep Purple nazwany „Mark II”. Ian Gillan i Roger Glover zastąpili Nicka Simpera oraz Roda Evansa, i dołączyli do Ritchiego Blackmore’a, Jona Lorda oraz Iana Paice’a. Tym samym rozpoczęła się era, która na zawsze zmieniła brzmienie klasycznego rocka. Wspominam o tym nie bez powodu w niniejszej recenzji. Już po pierwszych dźwiękach najnowszego albumu „Firebird” od Blues Fighters, nagranego we współpracy z ikoną polskiej sceny, Grzegorzem Kupczykiem, doskonale słychać, że duch tamtej epoki ponownie rozbrzmiewa i to z nową, świeżą siłą.
Poznańska formacja Blues Fighters pojawiła się na muzycznie mapie stosunkowo niedawno, bo w 2021. Już rok później mocnym krokiem wkroczyła na fonograficzną ścieżkę za sprawą debiutanckiego krążka „Pretty Baby”. Od tamtej pory tempo ich kariery można porównać do bluesrockowego huraganu. Twórczość Blues Fighters trafiła nie tylko do słuchaczy w Polsce, ale i poza jej granicami. W 2023 roku czytelnicy magazynu „Twój Blues” przyznali grupie tytuł „zespołu roku”, w efekcie czego Blues Fighters reprezentowali nasz kraj na prestiżowym European Blues Challenge.

Co więcej „Pretty Baby” wspięło się na podium amerykańskiego zestawienia Roots Music Report. W przypadku zespołów z Polski nie zdarza się to zbyt często. Niemała w tym zasługa teksańskiego wokalisty, gitarzysty i kompozytora Chucka Fraziera, który był jednym z motorów napędowych w tamtym okresie działalności. Pasmo sukcesów spowodowało, że jesienią 2024 roku Blues Fighters wkroczyli w kolejny etap swojej muzycznej podróży wprowadzając zmiany w składzie. Muzycy zaprosili do współpracy Grzegorza Kupczyka – głos Turbo i Non Iron oraz lidera CETI, a przy tym artystę, który od zawsze miał w sobie żyłkę do bluesa i jest zafascynowany hardrockową tradycją spod znaku Deep Purple. Nowym ogniwem w składzie został również klawiszowiec Łukasz Jakubowicz, odpowiedzialny m.in. za pulsujące na „Firebird” brzmienie organów Hammonda. Poza tym Blues Fighters tworzą: gitarzysta Wojciech Kubiak, perkusista Dariusz Nowicki oraz basista Tomás Diaz.
Grzegorz Kupczyk już ponad dwie dekady temu dał się poznać jako znakomity interpretator twórczości purpurowej grupy z okresu „Mark II”. Na „Firebird” wyraźnie pobrzmiewają echa tamtej epoki, ale nie tylko – da się tu usłyszeć również inspiracje czasami, gdy za mikrofonem w Deep Purple stali David Coverdale i Glenn Hughes. Album przynosi pełnokrwiste i mocne hardrockowe numery (tytułowy „Firebird”, „Reign”), ale nie brakuje też momentów bardziej stonowanych, przesyconych bluesową melancholią i ciepłym brzmieniem organów Hammonda („If You Want To Leave”, „Body Down Blues”, „Leave My Woman”). Mamy tu też swingujące elementy, głównie w kapitalnym „Trouble”. Są też ballady. Całość tworzy więc wielowymiarowy materiał, który został dopracowany w każdym szczególe.

Chciałbym też zwrócić uwagę na warstwę tekstową. Choć Chuck Frazier nie jest już frontmanem zespołu, to jego obecność wciąż unosi się nad tym albumem – aż siedem z dziesięciu tekstów wyszło spod jego pióra. Pozostałe liryki to dzieło Grzegorza Radomskiego („What Is Love”) oraz Dariusza Nowickiego („If You Want to Leave”, „Dancing in the Night”). Są to przemyślane, dojrzałe teksty, które idealnie korespondują z muzyką. Niektóre z nich skłaniają do refleksji – jak wspomniane „What Is Love” – inne opowiadają o codziennych zmaganiach, jeszcze inne niosą pozytywny przekaz i dają nadzieję na przyszłość. A przecież właśnie o to w muzyce chodzi: by poruszała, inspirowała i dodawała siły. Nawet, jeśli blues często kojarzy się z bólem, potrafi też nieść ukojenie i podnosić na duchu.

Nie mam wątpliwości, że najnowsza propozycja Blues Fighters z udziałem Grzegorza Kupczyka stanowi naprawdę udane otwarcie ich nowego rozdziału. Właściwie ciężko mi znaleźć słabsze momenty. Wszystkie kompozycje są naprawdę bardzo dobre. To płyta, która sprawdza się o każdej porze dnia i nocy. Choć w tym roku rynek w Polsce nie obfituje w zbyt wiele wyrazistych premier, cieszy fakt, że wśród nielicznych wyróżniających się albumów znalazł się ten nagrany przez grupę z Wielkopolski, która niczym mityczny feniks nie tylko powróciła w nowej odsłonie, ale – jak się wydaje – dopiero zaczyna swój prawdziwy lot.

Po prawie dwudziestoletniej karierze Heinz Mikus postanowił porzucić nazwę Faithful Breath, zmieniając ją w 1986 roku na Risk. Ryzykowny interes, ale dobry wybór pana Mikusa, ponieważ jego zamiar zerwania z przeszłością i oddania czystego konta swojemu 'nowemu' zespołowi i jego 'nowej' wizji opłacił się. Mógł zachować nazwę, ponieważ Faithful Breath miało już doświadczenie w podejmowaniu radykalnych transformacji estetycznych, zaczynając od renesansowego zespołu progresywnego w połowie lat 70., po hardrockowo-heavymetalowy zespół w stylu Scorpions, a później Accept w latach 80.

Risk był jedynie logiczną kontynuacją tej metalowej-morfozy, zasygnalizowanej już w ostatnim utworze Faithful Breath z ich ostatniego albumu, tytułowym utworze 'Skol' z 1986 roku , który był szczytem ich metalowej kariery.
Ale tego nie zrobił, a zamiast tego Risk odrodził się (ponownie), niczym ksenomorficzny rozpruwacz klatki piersiowej, brutalnie niszcząc swoje źródło pochodzenia, ale nie bez przeniesienia niektórych jego cech.

Risk is one of the rare cases of a classic metal band finding successful new life with a change of identity and style. From 1967-1985, they released six full-length albums as Faithful Breath, evolving from hard rock roots to a heavier style more typical of their day, before they decided they would partake in the faster, speed/thrash scene that Germany was very well known for by the mid 80s. Rather than drag their original vision through the mud, they adopted the name Risk, which surprisingly hadn't been taken by anyone important in the metal universe. The Daily Horror News was born, the first and still best effort under this new visage, despite the lamentable cover art which makes...only a strange kind of sense with the title.

No, this is not fucking Donkey Kong metal, but a work of memorable velocity and impressive songwriting which immediately placed the band among peers like Rage, Scanner, Helloween and Running Wild. It's primarily speed/power metal, but there are moments where they bite down a little harder for some thrash. The band's classic metal riffing influence obviously goes a long way towards making each track distinct and full to the brim with hooks, but I'd also point out the vocals of Heinz Mikus, which sound like a mix of Rock'n'Rolf Kasparek and the silky, grimier tones often adopted by Andi Deris through his work with Helloween. I thoroughly enjoy his performance here, with the same wonderful reverb common to Running Wild records from from the 1984-1989 period, and it's damn well consistent. You've just got to survive a moment of jungle beasts and radio samples to carve out the coconuts within...

"Living in Chaos" is the first layer of flaky white goodness, a speed jaunt that sounds strikingly similar to something that might occur of Kasparek were fronting Rage. "Roadwar", however, is one of the best tracks on the album, pretty much a pure power metal number which once again sounds like a particular pirate metal outfit of this period. Gang shouts, uproarious riffs, and fluid lethality all build into a superb chorus. They slow the pace for "DNS Madness", which I assume refers to one of the acids involved with possible cloning, but it's still got hooks aplomb, even the predictable chorus delivers. "Revolution Now", "Rommes Fritz" and "Speed Kills" ramp up the intensity, and I'm particularly enamored of the lead sequences in "Rommes Fritz", and "Strike" and the bonus track "Violent Science" are both likewise remarkable, the latter hitting a nice hard thrash pace through the verses.

The Daily Horror News had a lot to contend with in 1988, and perhaps this is the reason so few have actually heard of the band or album. Running Wild's Port Royal and Rage's Perfect Man both came out the same year, and both are unreal (two of my favorite albums ever), so that might explain why it was left in the dust, but this debut absolutely deserves mention alongside them, a trinity of German 'R' bands hauling ass with the best material of their careers, all within a short span of time. The mix here simply slays, still sounding fresh and bright over 20 years later, and the individual performances here are all noteworthy. But what is most magnificent is that an already established band (in Europe at least) were able to undergo a transition like with this dignity and class, retiring their prior identity instead of molesting it. Whether Risk ever got the credit they deserved is up for debate, but if you're a metalian of taste, acquire this record however possible. It is that good.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Epitaph was on the direct road to success: The band had a record deal with the US label Billingsgate in the bag, played - as the first West German rock band ever - an extensive tour through the USA, and "Outside The Law", their 1973 album produced in Chicago, achieved excellent sales.

The future seemed promising. But Billingsgate got into financial trouble, dragging the band into the maelstrom in 1974, so Epitaph took some time off. The merry-go-round of personnel changed and when the band went on tour with the Hungarian prog rockers Omega in 1978, the new line-up was in place and with Brain (Metronome) the new label partner was found. "Return To Reality" (1979) achieved considerable sales, a year later on "See You In Alaska" (1980) the band presented itself as a four-piece again and on the legendary "Live" (1981) the Epitaph typical twin guitars dominated again.

"Live" is available here for the first time in digitalized form and also on CD. The conclusion of this Epitaph time travel is the album "Danger Man", released in 1982 on the German Rockport label. The box comes with a 16-page booklet and plenty of bonus material.

This live DVD was recorded on the band’s 2004 UK tour. M3 feature three ex-Whitesnake members - guitarists Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody with bass player Neil Murray. Magnum’s Mark Stanway provides keyboards and Jimmy Copley (Paul Rodgers) bangs the drums. Two vocalists share the songs on here, Steffan Berggren (ex-Company of Snakes) and Doogie White (ex-Rainbow).

All the classic pre-1984 Whitesnake tunes are here like ‘Hit An’ Run’, ‘Trouble’ and the proper, hair free version of ‘Here I Go Again’. The version of ‘Slow An’ Easy’ is worth the admission price alone!

Steffen and Doogie handle the tunes well with Steffen uncannily like David Coverdale in sound at times. Both Moody and Marsden get solo spots of which Moody’s edges it in the enjoyment stakes for the glorious sound of a slide guitar.

The bonus material sees Moody and Marsden performing an acoustic set that features amongst others ‘Child Of Babylon’ plus their memories of the early days of the and their first meeting with Mr Coverdale.

An extremely enjoyable DVD and one that fans of classic Whitesnake will love. Just a shame that Coverdale won’t join forces again with Moody/Marsden/Murray for one ‘last hurrah’.
