Fantasmagoryczny wir wielobarwnej perwersji!

FA

With manic glee, Fathomless Ritual recreate the maddening, unhinged kind of death metal created by the likes of Demilich and give their own ugly, grime-ridden twist to it. The music has a darker, murkier, cavernous sound but all the same has a denser quality and a sense of modern urgency about it which livens up the proceedings. There's nary a dull moment on the album with there being a constant barrage of riffs all wriggling their way into your brain but it's done in such a boisterous manner that it doesn't feel at all life-threatening. Having the experience of bands such as Gutvoid, Fumes, Pukewraith, the sole mastermind behind the band, B. Dean, knows his way around death metal and how best to compound this particular style without destroying its essence or appeal for that matter. Without attempting to dethrone the gods, he's made a conscientious effort to make the sound more extreme and relevant in his own way and to that extent it works amazingly well. This is an album that should delight any fan of underground death metal music.

For fans of: Demilich, Chthe'ilist, Dead and Dripping, Mortiferum, Dead, Adramelech, Cryptworm

This truly fathomless, strictly ritualistic stuff has been concocted by just one musician, the name Brendan Dean, a young aspiring deathster form Toronto town who has already accumulated a sizeable resume with his participation in a voluminous number of outfits, all operating within the death metal circles, like Gutvoid, Body Asphyxiation Science, Fumes, Alucard, etc.

In other words, we may as well have the sworn death metal guru of the entire province of Ontario, another strife at this admirable designation being the album reviewed here. Dean jumps head-over-heels here into Lovecraftian folklore with dark, dissonant twisted riffs and extrapolations that would bring to mind (thousand)lake dwellers like Demilich and Nomicon, the surreal Russian “beauticians” Beheaded Zombie, and another enigmatic formation shredding much closer to home, the near-neighbours from Ottawa Exlimitir.

The man wastes no precious second and catapults the listener into his tenebrous sinister art with the non-fussy dissonant wonder “Hecatomb for an Unending Madness”; madness guaranteed within mere 3-min, with swirling crooked riffs and angular rhythmic jolts popping up at every nook and corner, Dean providing a not very decipherable but suitable guttural deathly baritone behind the mike. Crazy compelling stuff that will satisfy all gods, either lesser or major, including with the marvelously chaotic “Exiled to the Lower Catacombs”, the denizens of said catacombs reveling in constant time and tempo shifts, with sudden slowdowns brusquely swept aside by the next-in-line stylized spasm of brutality. Although “Gorge of the Nameless” may seem like a respite with its dense heavy mid-tempo riff-patterns, Dean is conscious of not serving two similar anti-climactisms in a row, and throws in the lengthy, pleasantly meandering saga “Grafted to the Chambers of Mirth”, the perfect summation of his lofty exploits heretofore, his repertoire later enriched with nods at the highbrow Floridian branch from the movement (the miasmic Morbid Angel-esque “Wielding the Bone Wand”), surprisingly melodious variations on the Demilich lakeside tales (“Cosmic Reflections from the Basin of Blood”), and successful attempts at summarizing the Australians Portal’s hyper-active dissonant formulas (“Gelatinous Being of Countless Forms”) but in a decidedly more digestible, less overwhelming manner.

There are also shades of Mekong Delta’s unorthodox, left-hand-path heritage (the spastic schizoid shredder “Gifts for Aranaktu”), only served with a hefty deathly sniff, the latter the guiding light on this really appetizing recording that sees Dean rising above the more formulaic histrionics of the other acts that he’s been involved with, further consolidating his homeland’s reputation as a reliable, near-constant provided of offbeat, less ordinary music. This is almost as compelling as another admirable addition to the DDD (dark dissonant deathliness) Department from last year, their southern neighbours Fabricant’s debut (“Drudge to the Thicket”), the Canadians bending it in a marginally more aggressive, speedier fashion. Re-inventing the wheel this isn’t, but is a thoroughly satisfying interpretation of canons within the death metal circle that have always evoked awe and respect amongst the more adventurous music lovers…

and one for which Dean doesn’t need too many helping hands if any at all. He walks alone, with his head held high, bracing himself for whatever dangerous encounters may befall him… music of the kind begets monstrosities, hey! Not to mention the constant concern as to how those capricious elder deities would react to it.
