Przygotujcie się na ostry wpierdol!



This is just the pick me up I needed after all that forsaking of metal I just went through. But that's enough story time. Nyctophobic is one of the few, one of the true, asskissing blah blah.... anyways one of the most talented, long running and bullshit-free grind bands has put together this sweet compilation so I could hear some old favorites and some of the rarities for which my hands hath yearned every longly.

This album fucking rules and not only is the material great but there's a whole goddamn hour of it. That my friends, is a grind band that cares about its listeners. If you're a fan, then you will like it - there is no other way. Nyctophobic doesn't make hits and they don't make filler and whoever claims otherwise I challenge to a grindcore duel. And if you haven't liked Nyctophobic's brilliance in the past then this comp simply isn't for you. Even though this material is taken from a bunch of splits and such, the quality is great. Maybe not your Australian trendcore great, but it's - surprisingly - damn good. And of course there's miscellaneous clips from random sources spliced in here and there, the best from an episode of Bob Larson's (sic?) Jesus asslicking festival of a show. As for the music part (my personal favorite part of an album heh) Nyctophobic delivers an hour of straightforward, semi thrashy and all skull pummeling grind. No cyber drumming, none of that diahhreah vocal bullshit, no pig squeal theatrics, no forced brutality, etc. Just straightforward and top notch grind from the Germans that know how it's done.

Blast from the Past isn't some money making scheme of a compilation like many of your, and sadly some of my, favorite bands have put out. (motorhead, anyone?) ... this is a compilation for the fans. If you love Nyctophobic but haven't heard all their material (you probably haven't, don't lie) then by golly you are in Nyctophobic's thoughts. An hour of old school (but not too punky - punk sucks) grinding from one of the best.

'Wszystkie kompozycje są mojego autorstwa, z grubsza zaaranżowane w domu przy pomocy Ableton Live a zmiksowane w nieistniejącym już Oblech Studiu na Cubase. Materiał wyjściowy były to głównie płyty z muzyką współczesną, poważną i free jazzem. Poza perkusją nagraną w studiu nie ma właściwie żadnych żywych partii instrumentalnych – wszystko to sample. Materiał powstawał i był miksowany w pierwszej połowie 2011 roku. Na płycie nie ma żadnych gości.'

Wojtek nie jest anonimową postacią na naszym muzycznym rynku. Oto jego krótkie bio:

Wojtek Sobura – perkusista, producent, kompozytor. Pochodzi z Kielc, do Warszawy sprowadziła go w 2000 roku edukacja na tzw. „Bednarskiej”, czyli jednej z niewielu w Polsce szkół muzycznych o profilu jazzowym. Przez te 12 lat jako perkusista przewinął się przez dziesiątki zespołów, głównie oscylujących w gatunkach tj. jazz, hiphop, soul, r&b, pop/rock. Na co dzień w studio współpracuje z kolektywem producenckim Trio z Ulrychville (wraz z Dominikiem Trębskim i Jurkiem Zagórskim) oraz z Dj’em Envee. Obecnie jest członkiem zespołów tj. Muzykoterapia, Kasia Nosowska „8”, Ritmodelia. Jako producent, realizator i kompozytor udzielał się przy najnowszej płycie Muzykoterapii pt. „Piosenki Izy” oraz debiutanckim albumie Pablo Hudiniego pt. „Ydżak”.

Grafikę z okładki stworzyła Marta Zając, okładkę złożył Konrad Wullert.
Mastering materiału zrobił Marcin Cichy (Skalpel).

Rosary to kapela z Warszawy powstała w 2017 roku, która zdecydowała się grać tradycyjny doom metal. Na przestrzeni kilku lat skład grupy zmieniał się po czym wykrastylizował się jako power trio w składzie: Misha, Marty i Matthew. W tym składzie zarejestrowali swoje pierwsze wydawnictwo "Telestai" wydane w 2022 roku przez Nine Records, na które składają się 5 utworów w klimacie ortodoksyjnego doom metalu wypełnionych przeszywającymi riffami, bulgoczącym basem, oryginalnymi wyczynami na perkusji i lamentującymi wokalami, czyli wszystkim tym co w tej muzyce najważniejsze.

Cztery lata później Rosary powraca z nowym materiałem - pełnometrażowym albumem „The Broken Sacrament” nagranym pomiędzy 2023 a 2024 rokiem. Album zawiera dziewięć utworów pełnych bólu i rozpaczy, z chwytliwymi riffami, ciężkim, miażdżącym brzmieniem i przejmującym wokalem. Rosary jest jednym z czołowych reprezentantów polskiej sceny tradycyjnego doom metalu, a „The Broken Sacrament” jeszcze bardziej umocni pozycję kapeli na scenie doom metal.

The album contains nine songs full of pain and despair with catchy riffs, heavy crushing sound and haunting vocals. Rosary continues to stand as one of the leading lights of Poland’s traditional doom metal scene and "The Broken Sacrament" is poised to further cement their place in the doom metal scene. Zanim bolesławski punkowy skład o nazwie Bruno Wątpliwy stał się tym, co znamy pod nazwą Fadin Colours, jeszcze wcześniej nastąpiła zmiana nazwy kapeli na coś anglosaskiego - Bruno the Questionable. Album pt. "Black Hourse" (pierwotnie) w 1993 został wydany przez wytwórnię SPV wyłącznie w postaci kasety magnetofonowej. Ów album jest pierwszym, na którym cichym tekściarskim spiritus movens okazał się dziennikarz muzyczny Tomasz Beksiński. Tak prace nad kasetową wersją z 1993 roku wspominał lider formacji, Leszek Rakowski:
"Przeniosłem się do Warszawy, (...) spotkałem Tomka, zaprzyjaźniliśmy się z nim - ja i wokalistka Kaśka, moja ówczesna żona. Przybrało to taki bieg, że regularnie lądowaliśmy u Tomka, raz w tygodniu. Sobota albo niedziela. On wyciągał świeżutkie filmy albo oldskulowe horrory. Uwielbiał, jak na filmach typu James Bond ktoś ginął. I potem przez pięć minut odgrywał tę scenę. Nasz przyjaźń przeniosła się na grunt zespołu. Spędził z nami w studiu w Łodzi jakiś czas, pomagając językowo Kaśce przy płycie 'Black Horse'".

Drugim (już jawnym) autorem tekstów z tego krążka jest Mirosław Witkowski, który napisał słowa do trzech utworów: "Sister Of The Night", "Love" oraz zamykający całość "Colours".

Kasetowa (pierwsza) wersja albumu nagrana została w Łodzi. Nastały koncerty, koncerty, więcej koncertów... Gunnar Eysel, basista niemieckiej gotyckiej grupy Love Like Blood, zachwycony występem Bruna, postanowił zainteresować zespołem wydawców zachodnich. Rezultatem był kontrakt podpisany z Dion Fortune Records – obejmował on nagranie na nowo materiału w studiu w Hamburgu, promocję na całym świecie oraz zmianę nazwy na łatwiejsze do wymówienia Fading Colours. Wydanie z roku 1995 to właśnie w całości sesje nagrane w Niemczech.

Grupa Fading Colours powstała w Bolesławcu na Dolnym Śląsku na zgliszczach punkowej kapeli Bruno Wątpliwy.

"I'm Scared Of..." jest uznawany przez wiele środowisk zarówno słuchaczy, jak i dziennikarzy za najlepszy album zespołu. W ówczesnym momencie Fading Colours składał się z trio: wokalistka - Katarzyna "De Coy" Rakowska (z.d. Ziemek), oraz duet producencki: Daniel Kleczyński / Leszek Rakowski. Na płycie gościnnie wystąpiła brytyjska wokalistka Anne Clark. Album - wydany przez niemiecką wytwórnię Dion Fortune - zrobił furorę w zachodniej Europie. Magazyn "Zillo" - największe niemieckie pismo poświęcone muzyce elektronicznej - przyznał jej tytuł albumu miesiąca i zapewnił specjalną promocję.

"I'm Scared Of..." to trzeci krążek Fading Colours, na którym cichym tekściarskim spiritus movens okazał się dziennikarz muzyczny Tomasz Beksiński. Lider formacji, Leszek Rakowski, tak wspominał udział Beksińskiego w lirycznej części tej płyty: "Gdyby nie Tomek, 'I'm Scared Of' nie byłaby taka, jaka jest. Zawarł w niej bardzo osobiste utwory, na przykład 'Eveline'. Miał gotowe teksty w teczce. Kaśka je tylko wybrała. Ta płyta postawiła nasz zespół. Puszczał w radiu nasze utwory, informował o nas, ale był obiektywny. Myślałem sobie czasem: 'Cholera, mógłbyś czasem coś pociągnąć, a tu jeden utwór na dwa tygodnie'...".

Limitowana edycja trzeciego studyjnego albumu zespołu Czerwone Gitary (SACD Hybrid) wydana w limitowanym nakładzie, w cyklu „Polskie Nagrania catalogue selections”. Jest to pierwsza w Polsce edycja tej płyty zrealizowana w formacie SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
Pierwszy raz w Polsce klasyka polskiej muzyki rozrywkowej ukazuje się na nośniku SACD. Cykl zawiera najważniejsze płyty z katalogu Polskich Nagrań, które zostały na nowo zremasterowane i wydane z niespotykaną dotąd starannością w formacie SACD. Wybór tego formatu jest ukłonem w stronę audiofilów.

Reedycja najważniejszych płyt w formacie SACD, ze względu na dostępność archiwów Polskich Nagrań w postaci analogowych taśm matek, jest naturalnym wyborem umożliwiającym najdoskonalsze zbliżenie się albumów do analogowego oryginału wynosząc je na niespotykany dotąd na polskim rynku muzycznym poziom.
W celu zapewnienia pełnej zgodności ze standardowymi odtwarzaczami płyt CD, niniejszy seria SACD została wykonana jako hybrydowa i zawiera dodatkową warstwę danych w formacie CD Audio, czytaną przez wszystkie odtwarzacze CD. Częstotliwość próbkowania strumienia danych DSD wykorzystywanego na płytach SACD jest 64 razy wyższa niż na płycie audio CD i wynosi 2,824MHz.

Trzecia płyta Czerwonych Gitar ukazała się w roku 1968 i pozostaje arcydziełem big beatu. Przyniósł wiele ponadczasowych przebojów, sprzedał się w ilości ponad 300 tys. egzemplarzy, osiągając status Złotej Płyty.
Album „Czerwone Gitary 3” jest świadectwem apogeum popularności zespołu i zbiorem znakomicie napisanych i wykonanych piosenek pamiętanych i słuchanych do dziś m.in.: „My z XX wieku”, „Dozwolone do lat 18tu”, „Kwiaty we włosach”, „Gdy kiedyś znów zawołam cię”. Ponadto edycja zawiera dziewięć nagrań dodatkowych z tego okresu pochodzących z singli i EPek. Wśród nich: „Anna Maria” i „Wróćmy na jeziora”.
Trzeci album Czerwonych Gitar jest ostatnim albumem nagranym w składzie z Krzysztofem Klenczonem – ten utalentowany kompozytor, gitarzysta i wokalista odszedł z Czerwonych Gitar w 1970 roku i założył własną formację Trzy Korony.

Limitowana edycja trzeciego studyjnego albumu zespołu Czerwone Gitary (SACD Hybrid) wydana w limitowanym nakładzie, w cyklu „Polskie Nagrania catalogue selections”. Jest to pierwsza w Polsce edycja tej płyty zrealizowana w formacie SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
Pierwszy raz w Polsce klasyka polskiej muzyki rozrywkowej ukazuje się na nośniku SACD. Cykl zawiera najważniejsze płyty z katalogu Polskich Nagrań, które zostały na nowo zremasterowane i wydane z niespotykaną dotąd starannością w formacie SACD. Wybór tego formatu jest ukłonem w stronę audiofilów.

Reedycja najważniejszych płyt w formacie SACD, ze względu na dostępność archiwów Polskich Nagrań w postaci analogowych taśm matek, jest naturalnym wyborem umożliwiającym najdoskonalsze zbliżenie się albumów do analogowego oryginału wynosząc je na niespotykany dotąd na polskim rynku muzycznym poziom.
W celu zapewnienia pełnej zgodności ze standardowymi odtwarzaczami płyt CD, niniejszy seria SACD została wykonana jako hybrydowa i zawiera dodatkową warstwę danych w formacie CD Audio, czytaną przez wszystkie odtwarzacze CD. Trzecia płyta Czerwonych Gitar ukazała się w roku 1968 i pozostaje arcydziełem big beatu. Przyniósł wiele ponadczasowych przebojów, sprzedał się w ilości ponad 300 tys. egzemplarzy, osiągając status Złotej Płyty.
Album „Czerwone Gitary 3” jest świadectwem apogeum popularności zespołu i zbiorem znakomicie napisanych i wykonanych piosenek pamiętanych i słuchanych do dziś m.in.: „My z XX wieku”, „Dozwolone do lat 18tu”, „Kwiaty we włosach”, „Gdy kiedyś znów zawołam cię”. Ponadto edycja zawiera dziewięć nagrań dodatkowych z tego okresu pochodzących z singli i EPek. Wśród nich: „Anna Maria” i „Wróćmy na jeziora”.
Trzeci album Czerwonych Gitar jest ostatnim albumem nagranym w składzie z Krzysztofem Klenczonem – ten utalentowany kompozytor, gitarzysta i wokalista odszedł z Czerwonych Gitar w 1970 roku i założył własną formację Trzy Korony.

Prior to We Shall Overcome, I did know of Lord Vigo, but I hadn’t listened to them. Things I’ve learned: their name comes from Ghostbusters; they quite like concept albums; they play epic metal, rather than specifically the epic doom that I thought. Danse de Noir, out in 2020, began a trilogy, which reaches its middle stages with this fifth full-length, and once again you don’t have to be a sci-fi buff to get the most out of the German band’s recording, but it will give you a home field advantage nonetheless. That said, I feel more than prepared for such a 52 minute listen as this with my experience in bold heavy metal, doom metal vistas, and storytelling hooks.

Kudos to Lord Vigo for delivering a set of songs that have wormed their way into my head before writing a review, since I don’t often hum the vocal hooks to an album after just a brief time getting to know it. In particular, 'The Heart of Eternal Night', 'Natural Habitat', 'A Necessary Evil', and the title track have all been on rotation in my head a few times, while other songs among 8 vocal-led tunes are in danger of doing so too. This in part speaks of the sway that the vocals hold during the listen, Vinz Clortho having quite a range of tricks to switch between, moving from pleading emphasis on 'A New Dark Age' to oddball melodic harmonies on 'A Necessary Evil' that both make use of his uneasy tremolo. Indeed, Lord Vigo’s vocalist does not soar or pummel like many heavy and doom singers, more imbue songs with distinct character in varied manner, as evident from an unusually strong Billy Idol inflection in 'From Our Ashes We Will Rise', tying that cut in with early ‘80s gothic rock in the process.

Musically too, Lord Vigo straddle several lanes of the heavy metal highway. The gothic rock stance just mentioned extends to the rattling bass and regular tempos of the same song, even some of the melodies, while elsewhere doomy moods face off with a few speedier classic metal tempos, as of Angel Witch. However, as with much epic metal, pace (of either extreme) seems not the main point, as instead song dynamics offer the greater pay-off from tempo shifts, chorus sections, exploratory instrumentals, and a bit of necessary stillness from time to time. What makes this refreshing in comparison to other epic heavy or doom outfits like Argus, DoomSword, or Eternal Champion is quite simply difference: Lord Vigo separate themselves almost totally from power metal influence, have no relation to battles of sword and steel, then add in plenty to set them apart musically too, with a massive bass tone, those uncertain vocals, and several synth parts to give We Shall Overcome those Blade Runner vibes that the concept requires. None of the aforementioned bands would contemplate opening with an intro like 'Blessed Are the Meek'; besides, the upbeat pound and wail of the still-doomy 'The Heart of Eternal Night' that follows ensures that all comparisons quickly become obsolete.

All the same, seamless albums should be less conspicuous in their progress, and We Shall Overcome cannot be classified as one of those. 11 tracks ensure plenty of up and down, and a few times these guys nearly throw me out of the loop. '1986 (Book 1: the Vision)' clearly serves a purpose in the narrative, yet with references to the Challenger space disaster and other newsworthy items of the time comes too close to reality to maintain the dreamy atmosphere, while the first half of the album feels appreciably stronger than the second, at least until 'A Necessary Evil' rolls round. For me, a vast difference exists between the domineering heavy metal tracks and the more reflective numbers too, which is why I notice 'A Necessary Evil' so strongly after 'A Gathering of Clouds' rolls by overhead more or less unnoticed, due to the latter featuring more even delivery and a smattering of sampled quotes that capture attention when isolated but not when set to wishy-washy backing. The ups and downs indeed prove noticeable, yet I feel that Lord Vigo do comparatively poorly at the subtle game.

In all, much more to praise than scorn appears during We Shall Overcome. In the first place, the palpable drama of the release impresses itself time and time again, while the livelier moments burst the bubble of expectation and bring me to a new land where epic metal joyously has more than one plausible theme and similarly multifarious ways to express itself. Nevertheless, I must return to what I said near the beginning and reiterate just how strongly certain parts of this release have stuck with me. I have no qualms to declare that the pair of 'The Heart of Eternal Night' and 'A Necessary Evil' jointly constitute the most exciting epic/trad brace I’ve heard this year, the former taking all the surprising routes to success, including a Candlemass twist to the chorus, and the latter simply beating the old masters at what they do best. That’s what I’m going to remember We Shall Overcome for, and that’s why it’s a mandatory recommendation for all curious fans of full-blooded metal.

'Will of Gods Is a Great Power' to album kompletny i monumentalny wkład rusi kijowskiej w oranie światowego poletka epickiego doom metalu. Nie będzie szczególnie kontrowersyjnym stwierdzenie, że Scald to połączenie epickiego Bathory z Candlemass. Nad wszystko wybija się jednak melancholijny jak skurwysyn głos niejakiego Agila, wyśpiewującego nad taflą jeziora swe wieszczące klęskę i opiewające majestat natury hymny, przy czym wczuwa się, jakby jutra nie było. I los nie był dla niego łaskawy, już w rok po premierze albumu, zginął w wypadku kolejowym, tym samym kończąc historię Scald. Pozostali członkowie założyli folk metalowy Tumulus, nawiązując do jednego z kawałków na płycie.

Perfection – the state of being perfect; being entirely without fault or defect; satisfying all requirements; corresponding to an ideal standard or abstract concept. I think we all understand the concept of perfection, but how do we apply it to music? Music is so incredibly subjective and so emotionally charged. The emotion music elicits isn’t quantifiable or tangible. Here on site, I’ve already given three albums a perfect score and I’m about to do that again. To me, an album doesn’t need to be consistent all the way through to be perfect, nor does it need every note to be flawlessly arranged. Some albums have something very special – a type of aura. If the album accomplishes everything it set out to do, and nothing else has been able to replicate it or get close, then it’s perfect. By this criteria, Scald’s Will of the Gods is Great Power is a perfect album.

I still distinctly remember the very first time I listened to Scald. I was young and just starting to dive into the epic doom metal scene with bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, and Solstice. I asked a close friend, someone I considered a mentor, for more bands in that vein and he told me to listen to Scald as soon as possible. I was in for a treat – I put on Will of the Gods is Great Power shortly after speaking with him and I was hit immediately with a wave of emotion. This album had something very special indeed. I felt utterly overwhelmed, but amazed at the same time that I found music like this. The pure sense of wonder and astonishment persists for me today, over a decade later.

My experience with Scald is not a unique one. I’ve witnessed firsthand others feeling the same admiration and amazement at their first listen of Will of the Gods is Great Power – some who otherwise would have never touched epic metal in any way. It’s difficult to distill the magic at work here, but on a high level Scald play slow paced, folk-infused, epic doom metal. When you think of this genre, Candlemass immediately come to mind, but that’s not really a big influence here. Scald draw their inspiration from Hammerheart-era Bathory and mix it with Manowar‘s Ross the Boss-era epics like “Secret of Steel” to create a powerful and triumphant sound.

Will of the Gods is Great Power clocks in at over fifty minutes and features just six tracks. When songs are simple, slow, and average over nine minutes there’s a serious risk of being dull and drawn out, but that’s not the case here in the slightest. Every note, every folk passage, every riff, every synth touch, every beautiful vocal melody – it all matters and has massive impact. Instead of being long and boring, the songs feel painfully short. I’m always left yearning for more when the album ends and I often find myself starting it back up immediately.

The production plays a huge part in making Will of the Gods is Great Power so mesmerizing and addicting. On the whole, it’s rougher than most albums in the epic doom style. Instead of being warm and bass heavy, Scald’s production is cold and virtually devoid of bass. The treble heavy production works in conjunction with a thin, razor-sharp guitar tone to create a wintery sound with a ton of bite. The drums and bass guitars are buried in the mix, accentuating the lead guitars and giving plenty of room for the band’s all star vocalist, Agyl, to drive the music and shine.

Agyl’s vocals are one of a kind and in a league entirely of their own. It’s impossible for me to discuss him without sounding hyperbolic, but he is genuinely one of my favorite metal vocalists. His tone is phenomenal and when combined with his bombastic and dramatic delivery it creates a deadly combination. Agyl compliments the instrumentation nicely and is often at the forefront of the music, allowing him to be the band’s centerpiece. Scald gives him all the room possible to drive the music and few do this as effectively as Agyl. He typically sits at a lower register, but there are plenty of moments where he shows off his tremendous range and graces us with his haunting highs. There’s a powerful moment half way through the track “A Tumulus” where he sings entirely in his highs, giving me shivers everytime without fail. The only complaint I’ve ever seen concerning Agyl is around his pronunciation. Given that Scald are a Russian band, Agyl’s first language isn’t English and this is painfully clear. He has difficulty pronouncing words clearly and sometimes it feels like he’s singing with a mouth full of cottonballs as a result. It’s largely incomprehensible and he could be insulting my mother for all I know, but it doesn’t matter. I don’t need to make out the words he’s singing to understand that Agyl’s voice is simply beautiful.

Unfortunately, Agyl passed away in a tragic accident very shortly after the release of Will of the Gods is Great Power. Scald split in 1997 with just this lone album as their legacy, but what a legacy it is. With just one album, Scald left a lasting impact far exceeding what many bands accomplish with expansive catalogs. I have listened to this album countless times over the years and the sense of wonder that overcame me the very first time is still there the hundredth time.

‘Epic’ has become a bit overused in the world of metal with hundreds of bands often completely wrongly being tagged with the term. It’s a pity really, because often bands that truly do deserve the tag get completely buried, and ‘Will of the Gods is Great Power’ from Russia’s Scald is one album that really does in every way qualify as one of the most ‘epic’ sounding albums ever.

The album features a fantastic mixture of the majestic grand riffs and vivid imagery of Bathory’s Viking metal style albums such as ’Hammerheart’ which it is clearly hugely influenced by and the crushing slow tempos and down tuned guitars of traditional doom bands like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Every riff is equally powerful, and combined with the Viking-themed lyrics can conjure up images of ancient lands and Viking warriors that most so-called ‘Viking metal’ bands can only dream of doing.

While the music isn’t particularly complex, the instrumentation is superb throughout and the music is structured and composed perfectly with a perfect mix of heavy riffs and melody, staying completely gripping through the long song lengths. The guitar work in particular is amazing. As well as the great riffs there are with plenty of sweeping guitar solos, all of which are well composed and sometimes breathtakingly beautiful and emotional. All of the music is played on just guitar, bass and drums apart from waves and wind sound effects used to enhance the atmosphere and chimes playing a hypnotic melody on ‘Ragnaradi Eve’.

Released first only on tape, it survived only because of the quality of the music to be remastered on CD. The remastering didn’t do much though, because the production is still awful. While the bass is clear, the guitars are thin and the drums are ridiculously weak. The thing is, while some may be put off, the production in many ways actually helps the music. While taking away some of the power that most doom contains, the production makes the atmosphere sound completely natural and believable, in a way similar to good quality black metal that gets the production ‘right’ like Ulver’s ‘Bergtatt’. The production can take a while to get used to however, and may not be immediately appealing. The more you get used to it though, the less noticeable it becomes.

The vocals are most affected by the production, which is one of the album’s biggest problems. Maxim "Agyl" Adrianov, who sadly passed away in 1997 leading to the band’s break-up, was clearly an incredible singer, with a range that seemingly effortlessly managed to go from a low growl to an ethereal high pitched wail. Agyl could definitely rival the very best of epic doom metal singers such as Messiah Marcolin, though his singing is unfortunately very restricted by the production. The vocals sound distant and unclear, buried under the instruments. This does help the atmosphere somewhat, but it makes his singing seem a lot less impressive, especially when he sings the higher notes. It also makes it very hard to understand the lyrics which are well-written for a non-Native speaker and fit the atmosphere perfectly.

‘Will of the Gods is Great Power’ is overall an incredible album with the only real flaw being certain parts in the production. Scald borrow from Bathory and Candlemass, and manage to reach the same quality, arguably even surpassing them. A must for any fan of epic doom metal.

'Will of Gods Is a Great Power' to album kompletny i monumentalny wkład rusi kijowskiej w oranie światowego poletka epickiego doom metalu. Nie będzie szczególnie kontrowersyjnym stwierdzenie, że Scald to połączenie epickiego Bathory z Candlemass. Nad wszystko wybija się jednak melancholijny jak skurwysyn głos niejakiego Agila, wyśpiewującego nad taflą jeziora swe wieszczące klęskę i opiewające majestat natury hymny, przy czym wczuwa się, jakby jutra nie było. I los nie był dla niego łaskawy, już w rok po premierze albumu, zginął w wypadku kolejowym, tym samym kończąc historię Scald. Pozostali członkowie założyli folk metalowy Tumulus, nawiązując do jednego z kawałków na płycie.

Perfection – the state of being perfect; being entirely without fault or defect; satisfying all requirements; corresponding to an ideal standard or abstract concept. I think we all understand the concept of perfection, but how do we apply it to music? Music is so incredibly subjective and so emotionally charged. The emotion music elicits isn’t quantifiable or tangible. Here on site, I’ve already given three albums a perfect score and I’m about to do that again. To me, an album doesn’t need to be consistent all the way through to be perfect, nor does it need every note to be flawlessly arranged. Some albums have something very special – a type of aura. If the album accomplishes everything it set out to do, and nothing else has been able to replicate it or get close, then it’s perfect. By this criteria, Scald’s Will of the Gods is Great Power is a perfect album.

I still distinctly remember the very first time I listened to Scald. I was young and just starting to dive into the epic doom metal scene with bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, and Solstice. I asked a close friend, someone I considered a mentor, for more bands in that vein and he told me to listen to Scald as soon as possible. I was in for a treat – I put on Will of the Gods is Great Power shortly after speaking with him and I was hit immediately with a wave of emotion. This album had something very special indeed. I felt utterly overwhelmed, but amazed at the same time that I found music like this. The pure sense of wonder and astonishment persists for me today, over a decade later.

My experience with Scald is not a unique one. I’ve witnessed firsthand others feeling the same admiration and amazement at their first listen of Will of the Gods is Great Power – some who otherwise would have never touched epic metal in any way. It’s difficult to distill the magic at work here, but on a high level Scald play slow paced, folk-infused, epic doom metal. When you think of this genre, Candlemass immediately come to mind, but that’s not really a big influence here. Scald draw their inspiration from Hammerheart-era Bathory and mix it with Manowar‘s Ross the Boss-era epics like “Secret of Steel” to create a powerful and triumphant sound.

Will of the Gods is Great Power clocks in at over fifty minutes and features just six tracks. When songs are simple, slow, and average over nine minutes there’s a serious risk of being dull and drawn out, but that’s not the case here in the slightest. Every note, every folk passage, every riff, every synth touch, every beautiful vocal melody – it all matters and has massive impact. Instead of being long and boring, the songs feel painfully short. I’m always left yearning for more when the album ends and I often find myself starting it back up immediately.

The production plays a huge part in making Will of the Gods is Great Power so mesmerizing and addicting. On the whole, it’s rougher than most albums in the epic doom style. Instead of being warm and bass heavy, Scald’s production is cold and virtually devoid of bass. The treble heavy production works in conjunction with a thin, razor-sharp guitar tone to create a wintery sound with a ton of bite. The drums and bass guitars are buried in the mix, accentuating the lead guitars and giving plenty of room for the band’s all star vocalist, Agyl, to drive the music and shine.

Agyl’s vocals are one of a kind and in a league entirely of their own. It’s impossible for me to discuss him without sounding hyperbolic, but he is genuinely one of my favorite metal vocalists. His tone is phenomenal and when combined with his bombastic and dramatic delivery it creates a deadly combination. Agyl compliments the instrumentation nicely and is often at the forefront of the music, allowing him to be the band’s centerpiece. Scald gives him all the room possible to drive the music and few do this as effectively as Agyl. He typically sits at a lower register, but there are plenty of moments where he shows off his tremendous range and graces us with his haunting highs. There’s a powerful moment half way through the track “A Tumulus” where he sings entirely in his highs, giving me shivers everytime without fail. The only complaint I’ve ever seen concerning Agyl is around his pronunciation. Given that Scald are a Russian band, Agyl’s first language isn’t English and this is painfully clear. He has difficulty pronouncing words clearly and sometimes it feels like he’s singing with a mouth full of cottonballs as a result. It’s largely incomprehensible and he could be insulting my mother for all I know, but it doesn’t matter. I don’t need to make out the words he’s singing to understand that Agyl’s voice is simply beautiful.

Unfortunately, Agyl passed away in a tragic accident very shortly after the release of Will of the Gods is Great Power. Scald split in 1997 with just this lone album as their legacy, but what a legacy it is. With just one album, Scald left a lasting impact far exceeding what many bands accomplish with expansive catalogs. I have listened to this album countless times over the years and the sense of wonder that overcame me the very first time is still there the hundredth time.

‘Epic’ has become a bit overused in the world of metal with hundreds of bands often completely wrongly being tagged with the term. It’s a pity really, because often bands that truly do deserve the tag get completely buried, and ‘Will of the Gods is Great Power’ from Russia’s Scald is one album that really does in every way qualify as one of the most ‘epic’ sounding albums ever.

The album features a fantastic mixture of the majestic grand riffs and vivid imagery of Bathory’s Viking metal style albums such as ’Hammerheart’ which it is clearly hugely influenced by and the crushing slow tempos and down tuned guitars of traditional doom bands like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Every riff is equally powerful, and combined with the Viking-themed lyrics can conjure up images of ancient lands and Viking warriors that most so-called ‘Viking metal’ bands can only dream of doing.

While the music isn’t particularly complex, the instrumentation is superb throughout and the music is structured and composed perfectly with a perfect mix of heavy riffs and melody, staying completely gripping through the long song lengths. The guitar work in particular is amazing. As well as the great riffs there are with plenty of sweeping guitar solos, all of which are well composed and sometimes breathtakingly beautiful and emotional. All of the music is played on just guitar, bass and drums apart from waves and wind sound effects used to enhance the atmosphere and chimes playing a hypnotic melody on ‘Ragnaradi Eve’.

Released first only on tape, it survived only because of the quality of the music to be remastered on CD. The remastering didn’t do much though, because the production is still awful. While the bass is clear, the guitars are thin and the drums are ridiculously weak. The thing is, while some may be put off, the production in many ways actually helps the music. While taking away some of the power that most doom contains, the production makes the atmosphere sound completely natural and believable, in a way similar to good quality black metal that gets the production ‘right’ like Ulver’s ‘Bergtatt’. The production can take a while to get used to however, and may not be immediately appealing. The more you get used to it though, the less noticeable it becomes.

The vocals are most affected by the production, which is one of the album’s biggest problems. Maxim "Agyl" Adrianov, who sadly passed away in 1997 leading to the band’s break-up, was clearly an incredible singer, with a range that seemingly effortlessly managed to go from a low growl to an ethereal high pitched wail. Agyl could definitely rival the very best of epic doom metal singers such as Messiah Marcolin, though his singing is unfortunately very restricted by the production. The vocals sound distant and unclear, buried under the instruments. This does help the atmosphere somewhat, but it makes his singing seem a lot less impressive, especially when he sings the higher notes. It also makes it very hard to understand the lyrics which are well-written for a non-Native speaker and fit the atmosphere perfectly.

‘Will of the Gods is Great Power’ is overall an incredible album with the only real flaw being certain parts in the production. Scald borrow from Bathory and Candlemass, and manage to reach the same quality, arguably even surpassing them. A must for any fan of epic doom metal.

Jest on poświęcony zmarłemu w wypadku samochodowym Pawłowi Bergerowi,
pianiście oraz współzałożycielowi i kompozytorowi grupy.

Koncert odbył się w Zabrzu 27 stycznia 2006 w Domu Muzyki i Tańca.
Wzięli w nim udział przyjaciele i byli współpracownicy zespołu.
