Wydany w 1969 roku, rewelacyjny psychodeliczny album o ciężkim gitarowym brzmieniu i świetnych, nośnych kompozycjach. Jedna z 2-3 najbardziej niedocenionych amerykańskich płyt końca lat 60-tych. Niemal każdy utwór (z siedmiu) to dynamit! Amerykańska reedycja z 2021 roku, rozszerzona o dwa CD - na pierwszym z nich znalazły się alternatywne, a na drugim instrumentalne wersje utworów z albumu.



One of the best things i got into as the result of scouring Acid Archives back in 2021 during lockdown boredom. The difference maker for me is that while this is genuinely pretty "psych-y", the band rocks very hard, there are almost no extraneous elements and the songwriting is uniformly very strong. In particular, it might sound kind of like damning with faint praise, but the total lack of any chintzy keyboard or "period" sound FX really makes this feel remarkably contemporary in a way that I wish many more bands (not all!) would have pursued--and you have to add into that Murray Shiffrin's beautiful fuzz, with plenty of bumblebee G-string playing, and Mike Ratti'c cavernous drums.

It's not just the sound, though; the band is admirably punky, tribal, and frat rockin' as the situation demands, with the titular singer Morgen's ultra-delicate vocals adding what there is of a "psych" aspect. It's hard to imagine this record coming out much earlier or later than it did; it has some thunderous aspects, sounding very "hard rock", but these are masterfully integrated into some rave-up sections that I gather bands soon came to think of as a dated "garage rock" sound. To my ears, this adds a very welcome diversity to the proceedings.

Well worth checking out if, like me, you like the piercing fuzz of "psych rock" but aren't sold on some of the dodgier studio gimmicks--but you also enjoy the somewhat jammy, purposefully messy and wild psych sound at its best.

Budka Suflera „Za ostatni grosz” jest piątym studyjnym albumem wydanym oryginalnie w 1982 roku przez wytwornię Tonpress. Jet to także drugi album, na którym śpiewa Romuald Czystaw. Wybijającą się postacią na płycie jest młody i zdolny gitarzysta Jan Borysewicz.

Album Budka Suflera „Za ostatni grosz” ukazał się w szczególnym dla PRL-owskiej Polski momencie. Niezamierzenie stał się symbolem następujących w kraju przemian. Tytułowy utwór „Za ostatni grosz” szybko uzyskał status wielkiego przeboju. Album ten doczekał się jedenastu oficjalnych wydań.



Przebojowy krążek sprawił, że grupa – po komercyjnej porażce poprzedniego longplaya „Ona przyszła prosto z chmur” – znowu powróciła do łask publiczności. „Za ostatni grosz” to najpopularniejsza płyta wydana przez firmę Tonpress w 1982 r. z imponującym nakładem 160 000 egzemplarzy. Tak, lata 80. to czas, kiedy winyle świetnie się sprzedawały. Do tego promowano je nie trzema singlami, jak to ma miejsce obecnie, ale dajmy na to… siedmioma. Tak było w przypadku tego albumu.

„Teraz rób, co chcesz” dotarł do 1. miejsca listy przebojów pr. I Polskiego Radia. Utwór „Za ostatni grosz” uplasował się na 2. pozycji na liście przebojów miesięcznika „Non Stop”. „Nie taki znów wolny” zajął 3. lokatę na liście przebojów radiowego Studia Gama. „Rok dwóch żywiołów” był 5. w „Non Stopie”, a „Memu miastu na do widzenia” oraz „Rock’n’Roll na dobry oczątek” dotarły do 6. miejsc w (odpowiednio) Studiu Gama i w głosowaniu czytelników tygodnika „Panorama”. „Kto zrobił mi ten żart” zajął 10. pozycję w pr. I Polskiego Radia.

To oznacza, że 7 z 8 utworów zamieszczonych na płycie było notowanych na listach przebojów! Niezłe osiągnięcie, prawda?

Album otwiera utwór tytułowy, w którym niewesołą melodię doskonale uzupełnia dosyć przygnębiający tekst, mówiący o zatraceniu siebie i dawnych ideałów. „Wczoraj niewinni tak,/dzisiaj pionki w grze”. No ta solówka Jana Borysewicza na gitarze basowej, która trwa ok. 1,5 minuty! Coś takiego by nie przeszło w dzisiejszym mainstreamie zdefiniowanym 3 – minutowymi ramami piosenki… Podobnie gorzkie refleksje odnajdujemy w piosence „Kto zrobił mi ten żart”. „Co ja tutaj robię, skąd pomysł, by tu żyć,/czego tutaj szukam skoro tu nie ma nic?”.

„Wszystko to widział świat” nawiązuje do zmieniającego się ówcześnie krajobrazu społeczno – politycznego Polski (m.in. powstanie „Solidarności”). Jest to w zasadzie ostrzeżenie (aktualne wczoraj i dziś), aby nie ufać „zbytnio nowym modom,/które dziejowy niesie wiatr”. „Rock’n’Roll na dobry początek” to pozornie triumfalny hymn zwycięstwa rocka nad muzyką disco, która była mocno lansowana – kosztem tej pierwszej – w Polskim Radiu pod koniec lat 70. „Wielkie lody ruszyły,/disco wreszcie trafił szlag”. Tyle że gdyby znów czytać między wierszami, biorąc poprawkę na czas, kiedy nagrywano materiał na płytę (1981 r.), trudno nie odnieść wrażenia, że chodzi o chwilową „odwilż”, jaka nastąpiła w kraju w związku z tzw. „karnawałem Solidarności”.

„Teraz rób, co chcesz” i „Rok dwóch żywiołów” przynoszą lżejsze, acz nie bardziej optymistyczne treści, mówiące o zakończonych relacjach.

Krążek zamyka „Memu miastu na do widzenia” – „odkurzony” kawałek z 1974 r., tu w wersji niemalże hard rockowej. Niestety, Romualdowi Czystawowi brakuje tu energii i dynamizmu, piosenka ujawnia też jego skromne warunki wokalne, zwłaszcza jeśli porówna się go z Krzysztofem Cugowskim -pierwotnym wykonawcą tego utworu.

W każdym razie płyta „Za ostatni grosz” świetnie oddaje niespokojnego ducha (nie tylko muzycznego) początku dekady lat 80. I sądzę, że należy wracać do niej, rozpatrując ją w kontekście zachodzących wówczas zmian na krajowej scenie politycznej. W ramach ciekawostek – pamiętam, że jako dziecko przyglądałem się wykonanej z niskiej jakości papieru okładce albumu. To też znak tamtych czasów. Cyfrowa reedycja nie jest w stanie tego oddać…

Siłą rzeczy słychać wyraźne wpływy Hendrixa, Cream, Fleetwood Mac z Greenem oraz całej tej obłędnej, choć zapomnianej, brytyjskiej psychodelii spod znaku Open Mind, The Attack czy Wimple Winch.

Jakość dźwięku jest doskonała, zaś od strony muzycznej nie ma żadnych wypełniaczy - wyłącznie klasyczne, rockowe mięsko! Tak jak w przypadku, również wstrzymanego, albumu progresywnej grupy Canterbury Glass można tylko dywagować, co by się stało gdyby LP Leviathan ukazał się w epoce na dużej, wpływowej wytwórni jaką była Elektra! Pierwszy album pochodzącego z Austrii Venator to był trochę taki nieśmiały pierwszy krok tej kapeli na scenie metalowej. Obrali sobie za cel przypomnienie nam heavy metalu z nutką hard rocka w klimacie lat 80. W ich muzyce znajdzie się coś z Heavy Load, Iron maiden, Judas Priest, Riot city czy Mindless Sinner. 25 kwietnia na świat wyszedł "Psychodrome" za sprawą Dying Victims Productions.
Dla fanów heavy metalu lat 80 i klasycznych dźwięków to pozycja obowiązkowa.

Okładka nieco kiczowata, ale oddaje w pełni klimat lat 80. Brzmienie również mocno wzorowane na tamtych czasach. Venator to przede wszystkim dobrze zgrany duet gitarowy, który tworzą Holzner/Ehrengruber. Panowie dają czadu i choć to wszystko wtórne to dostarcza sporo frajdy i niezapomnianych przeżyć. Słucha się tego naprawdę bardzo dobrze, a pojedynki gitarowe czy riffy są tutaj nie ladą atrakcją. Wszystko pięknie spina wokal Hansa Huemera, którego charyzma i drapieżność dodaje uroku. Intro "Into the drome" przyprawia o dreszcze i buduje odpowiednie napięcie. Potem od razu na pierwszy strzał dwa killery. Energiczny "Children of The Beast" i przebojowy "Steel the Night". Skoczny "Ravening Angel" przemyca patenty NWOBHM i mocno nawiązuje do dwóch pierwszych płyt Iron maiden. Kompozycja godna uwagi! Najdłuższy na płycie jest "The Final Call", który pokazuje, że band potrafi urozmaicić kompozycję i grać dłużej nie przynudzając. Jest coś z heavy load, czy iron maiden. Band pokazuje prawdziwą moc i pomysłowość. Prosto i do celu jest w 'Radar", który jest udanym miksem heavy metalu i hard rocka. Oj wpada w ucho. Więcej hard rocka i wpływów NWOBHM można wyłapać w skocznym "Dynamite" i takie proste patenty zawsze sprawdzają się najlepiej. Hit godny wyróżnienia! Wokale Hansa w "Fear the light" robią wrażenie, szkoda tylko że utwór troszkę słabszy. Finał to energiczny, nieco speed metalowy "Astral Seduction" i Venator pokazuje, że rozwinął skrzydła i brzmi co raz to pewniej. Nie mają czego się wstydzić.

"Psychodrome" brzmi jakby powstał w latach 80. Nie jest to jakiś zaginiony klasyk z lat 80, a najnowsze dzieło austriackiego Venator, który działa od 9 lat. Nowy krążek umacnia pozycję zespołu i pokazuje jak ogromny drzemie w nim potencjał.

80s synths begin the record with a nostalgic and simplistic introduction. As guitars come to life, the traditional heavy metal attack is launched with full melodic power. Slowing joining, the rhythm sections pummel into existence and the full instrumental mix is glorious. There is plenty of space between each instrument and the vocals so everything can breathe, be heard and most importantly; have impact. Vocally the melodic and heartfelt performance is just as strong as on the bands previous works while the riffing is also potent as ever. Hearing more prominent bass lines to counter the ripping solos ensures every member has their time in the spotlight. The drumming is a powerhouse of pure classic strength and the essential backbone to this record. It feels like we a picking up exactly where we left off with Venator, for which I am glad. I’ve really enjoyed the whole body of work from this band and I’m excited to venture further into the psychodrome…

From the fist-pounding fury to haunting passages, I love the dynamics that this band uses while holding that simplistic charm of Accept’s “Metal Heart” or Stormwitch’s “Stronger Than Heaven”, either way an undeniably European feeling is very present on this album and the Austrians don’t show away from that characteristic. Their sense of melodic prowess and engaging hooks is perfect, but they still vary things enough to keep from feeling like a one trick pony. Harnessing a powerful set of musicians can sometimes be a struggle for control, but everything here is balanced and has its time to shine. Having seen this band live, I know just how infectiously these songs translate in a concert setting to get everyone singing along and having a great time. Sometimes the less is more style of songwriting really pays off and Venator are a gleaming example that still feels authentic and true to the bone.

These are the kind of songs which get their hooks deep into your flesh and drag you back endlessly for more. Venator have always felt confident and like they know exactly what material to put forward and that continues with this second opus of overtly classic-sounding heavy metal. There is no denying the good times you will experience with this record. While perhaps not the most inventive, who cares when it sounds this damned good? Not me. Every soaring moment feels like one more shot at glory that never misses. Each piece a ripping slice of steel that lacerates you with its shining brilliance. Strap in ’til the end and you’ll be flipping the wax over to hear it again. “Psychodrome” is one belter of an album that is just to fun to miss. Metal needs to have that right feel to it that grabs you by the throat and thrusts you out into the night to fend for yourself and Venator captures exactly that.

If catchy, powerful and enchanting heavy metal haunted by the spirits of the 80s while pushing forth its own character is your thing; Venator is definitely a band to have on your radar. As always we hear masterful songwriting and killer musicianship pack one hell of a punch and take us on one epic ride that you never want to end. Prawdziwi mistrzowie demonicznego thrash/death metalu!
Pierwsze dwa dema to undergroundowe klasyki!

Official re-issue through Xtreem Music with 2 bonus, of the CD that was originally released in 2011 which includes the two legendary demos "Descent Into Chaos" ('88) & "Immortality's End" ('89), the 7"EP "Fade From Reality" ('91) and 2 compilation tracks from '94 by this mythic US band of true Death Metal somewhat in the vein of very early MORBID ANGEL, SADISTIC INTENT, MERCILESS, POSSESSED... but way more intense and aggressive. An essential masterpiece!!!



I just love such compilation releases, which gather old demo or EP recordings from a band, which not necessarily is well remembered nowadays. Recent years has brought few such releases and it seems like the nowadays resurgence of old school death metal is the best time ever to remind us some of those old cult bands. Necroharmonic belongs to the labels, which specializes in it and I think they’re actually doing one of the best jobs and are responsible for exhuming the old materials from such bands as Derketa, Goreaphobia, Wombbath, Interment, Crematory and Rottrevore. Their greatest strength not only lies in the quality of death metal and awesomeness of those bands, whose recordings they’ve compiled, but it’s also the way they’ve been releasing those CDs. I love those fat, detailed booklets, with dozens of old photos, bios, lyrics and other extras. It always looks very impressive and so anytime I see that Necroharmonic is about to release another compilation I just know I need to buy it, because it is certain that it’s going to be worth the money.

And so I did with “Darkened Path Revealed”. It’s a CD, which gathers the old recordings from Frederick, Maryland, US based band called Exmortis. Well, I must be honest with and tell that although I’ve known this moniker for years, I only had listened to maybe two or three songs of theirs earlier, so it was a good opportunity to buy “Darkened Path Revealed” and listen to all the stuff that was released by the band. Well, it turned out that it actually doesn’t include everything, but as I’ve found out when digging the history of Exmortis, there was one demo from 1994 (“Butchers of the Urban Frontier”), which isn’t really considered to be an Exmortis release, as it was composed and recorded without Brian Werking, the mainman behind the band. There were some problems in 1994 that led to split up between Werking and the other guys and Chris Weiser took the name and did a demo with some new members, but this demo is far from the sound and style of original Exmortis, whose songs were always composed by Werking. And this is why this demo 1994 is not included on the compilation. But don’t worry, there’s enough material anyway. It compiles the following materials: “Descent Into Chaos” demo 1988, “Immortality’s End” demo 1989, “Fade From Reality” EP 1991, “History of Things to Come” compilation 1994 plus several extra, unreleased recordings (some of which are only intros though), what gives almost an hour of death metal music in total. Fuck yeah, this is what I like!

Of all those recordings, I think I like “Immortality’s End” most, it’s damn fuckin killer archaic death metal with a huge thrashing influence, but in general every bit of this compilation deserves your praise. Exmortis have been slashing with merciless thrashing death metal, which brings some resemblances to bands like early Sepultura, Possessed, Massacra, Kreator, Nocturnus and few more, but even if these are just the demos, the quality of those recordings isn’t far worse from what the bands I mentioned have been doing on their full length albums. Really, this is razor sharp, neckbreaking, blasting metal (which may sound slightly archaic nowadays, but it has such a charm and feeling that I personally cannot resist it), with many splendid riffs and parts, with great vocals and what’s more, it was also pretty well produced. The quality of each recording is just awesome and it would even fit the full length, if Exmortis ever had a chance to record one. Unfortunately, they didn’t and the future wasn’t as bright for them as they would wish, but that’s even more rewarding for Werking and his band to have this compilation released, I think. Besides, the band has reformed recently and recorded new material, titled “Resurrection ... Book of the Dead”, which I haven’t heard yet, but I’m hoping it’s going to be a smasher and will be as good as say the comeback recording from Divine Eve for instance.

But for now, I enjoy “Darkened Path Revealed” compilation. This is just splendid release and I must say that Necroharmonic did yet another great job. Did I mention how fat is the booklet here? A lot of photos, some words from people like Chris Reifert, James Murphy, Killjoy, Jeff Becerra and the guys from Unleashed, there are also details about each of the old demos, all the lyrics, etc. All those details plus the fantastic music of course make me feel absolutely happy and enthusiastic about Exmortis, so I definitely recommend this compilation to all fans of old school death metal. Get it asap and bang your head! Prawdziwi mistrzowie demonicznego thrash/death metalu!
Pierwsze dwa dema to undergroundowe klasyki!

Official re-issue through Xtreem Music with 2 bonus, of the CD that was originally released in 2011 which includes the two legendary demos "Descent Into Chaos" ('88) & "Immortality's End" ('89), the 7"EP "Fade From Reality" ('91) and 2 compilation tracks from '94 by this mythic US band of true Death Metal somewhat in the vein of very early MORBID ANGEL, SADISTIC INTENT, MERCILESS, POSSESSED... but way more intense and aggressive. An essential masterpiece!!!



I just love such compilation releases, which gather old demo or EP recordings from a band, which not necessarily is well remembered nowadays. Recent years has brought few such releases and it seems like the nowadays resurgence of old school death metal is the best time ever to remind us some of those old cult bands. Necroharmonic belongs to the labels, which specializes in it and I think they’re actually doing one of the best jobs and are responsible for exhuming the old materials from such bands as Derketa, Goreaphobia, Wombbath, Interment, Crematory and Rottrevore. Their greatest strength not only lies in the quality of death metal and awesomeness of those bands, whose recordings they’ve compiled, but it’s also the way they’ve been releasing those CDs. I love those fat, detailed booklets, with dozens of old photos, bios, lyrics and other extras. It always looks very impressive and so anytime I see that Necroharmonic is about to release another compilation I just know I need to buy it, because it is certain that it’s going to be worth the money.

And so I did with “Darkened Path Revealed”. It’s a CD, which gathers the old recordings from Frederick, Maryland, US based band called Exmortis. Well, I must be honest with and tell that although I’ve known this moniker for years, I only had listened to maybe two or three songs of theirs earlier, so it was a good opportunity to buy “Darkened Path Revealed” and listen to all the stuff that was released by the band. Well, it turned out that it actually doesn’t include everything, but as I’ve found out when digging the history of Exmortis, there was one demo from 1994 (“Butchers of the Urban Frontier”), which isn’t really considered to be an Exmortis release, as it was composed and recorded without Brian Werking, the mainman behind the band. There were some problems in 1994 that led to split up between Werking and the other guys and Chris Weiser took the name and did a demo with some new members, but this demo is far from the sound and style of original Exmortis, whose songs were always composed by Werking. And this is why this demo 1994 is not included on the compilation. But don’t worry, there’s enough material anyway. It compiles the following materials: “Descent Into Chaos” demo 1988, “Immortality’s End” demo 1989, “Fade From Reality” EP 1991, “History of Things to Come” compilation 1994 plus several extra, unreleased recordings (some of which are only intros though), what gives almost an hour of death metal music in total. Fuck yeah, this is what I like!

Of all those recordings, I think I like “Immortality’s End” most, it’s damn fuckin killer archaic death metal with a huge thrashing influence, but in general every bit of this compilation deserves your praise. Exmortis have been slashing with merciless thrashing death metal, which brings some resemblances to bands like early Sepultura, Possessed, Massacra, Kreator, Nocturnus and few more, but even if these are just the demos, the quality of those recordings isn’t far worse from what the bands I mentioned have been doing on their full length albums. Really, this is razor sharp, neckbreaking, blasting metal (which may sound slightly archaic nowadays, but it has such a charm and feeling that I personally cannot resist it), with many splendid riffs and parts, with great vocals and what’s more, it was also pretty well produced. The quality of each recording is just awesome and it would even fit the full length, if Exmortis ever had a chance to record one. Unfortunately, they didn’t and the future wasn’t as bright for them as they would wish, but that’s even more rewarding for Werking and his band to have this compilation released, I think. Besides, the band has reformed recently and recorded new material, titled “Resurrection ... Book of the Dead”, which I haven’t heard yet, but I’m hoping it’s going to be a smasher and will be as good as say the comeback recording from Divine Eve for instance.

But for now, I enjoy “Darkened Path Revealed” compilation. This is just splendid release and I must say that Necroharmonic did yet another great job. Did I mention how fat is the booklet here? A lot of photos, some words from people like Chris Reifert, James Murphy, Killjoy, Jeff Becerra and the guys from Unleashed, there are also details about each of the old demos, all the lyrics, etc. All those details plus the fantastic music of course make me feel absolutely happy and enthusiastic about Exmortis, so I definitely recommend this compilation to all fans of old school death metal. Get it asap and bang your head! The above statement is true! As I experienced tough times digesting the band's latest album "Paradox Hotel" I thought that my affair with The Flower Kings was about to end up and forget about this band! But .. that was happening before the magic spin number 11. At spin number 10 I still thought that the music of PH was rubbish and should thrown on a waste basket - resell the CD to the secondary market if I wish. But at spin number 11 everything turned upside down and I truly love the album. So, why so important to love Paradox Hotel before enjoying this DVD / CD? It's because this new live lset contains materials from the Paradox Hotel album. But you are lucky that there is no "Monsters and Men" - the track that inhibited me to digest the beauty of Paradox Hotel. But when I conquered that track, I could finally enjoy the album in its entirety. So, for those of you who do not favor Paradox Hotel because of "Monsters and Men" you are relieved now as there is no such inhibitor. Well, I don't intend to scare you but it's the fact. Instead you have "Hit Me With A Hit" which I'm sure you all will be able to digest easily. Having been a fan of The Flower Kings for some time I was so concerned that the band experienced many personnel changes. The new drummer Marcus Liliequist is an excellent player even though he is less dynamic than Zoltan Csorz. For those of you who have seen the excellent "Meet The Flower Kings" will find that this set has some improvement here and there. The picture quality and sound quality are excellent. Enjoying the voideo while the Paradox Hotel material are being played is to me a very special moment. All the subtleties that I imagined during the Paradox Hotel listening pleasure are now in front of my eyes and damn close to my ears that I can enjoy. I will eventually revise this write-up in more in-depth analysis once I got a chance to spin more than three times.

It's a masterpiece of prog (any sub-genre!) live set that proggers must have!

Mutagenic Host to nowa, ale już zdeformowana twarz na scenie death metalowej. Stwierdziłem, że dam im szansę i sprawdzę, co takiego kryje się na „The Diseased Machine”, bowiem już sama okładka podsuwała mi myśl, iż może mnie się to spodobać.

Londyński kwintet istnieje od kilku lat, pierwsze oznaki aktywności przypadają na 2023 rok, więc można by rzec, że mamy do czynienia ze świeżynką. Ale jak włączycie sobie ich debiut, to niczego świeżego tu nie znajdziecie. Raczej rozpad i zgniliznę, charakterystyczną dla nagrań takiego Autopsy. Zresztą odór kapeli Reiferta unosi się nad muzyką Mutagenic Host. Te numery nie są jakoś przesadnie szybkie, chwilami wręcz przeciwnie – ma się wrażenie, że ciągną się jak bebechy rozjechanego zwierzęcia na asfalcie. Mutagenic Host to nowa, ale już zdeformowana twarz na scenie death metalowej. Stwierdziłem, że dam im szansę i sprawdzę, co takiego kryje się na „The Diseased Machine”, bowiem już sama okładka podsuwała mi myśl, iż może mnie się to spodobać.

Londyński kwintet istnieje od kilku lat, pierwsze oznaki aktywności przypadają na 2023 rok, więc można by rzec, że mamy do czynienia ze świeżynką. Ale jak włączycie sobie ich debiut, to niczego świeżego tu nie znajdziecie. Raczej rozpad i zgniliznę, charakterystyczną dla nagrań takiego Autopsy. Zresztą odór kapeli Reiferta unosi się nad muzyką Mutagenic Host. Te numery nie są jakoś przesadnie szybkie, chwilami wręcz przeciwnie – ma się wrażenie, że ciągną się jak bebechy rozjechanego zwierzęcia na asfalcie. Ponadto samo brzmienie „The Diseased Machine” też niejako może kojarzyć się z twórcami „Mental Funeral”. Czyli jak dla mnie jest to wystarczająca rekomendacja, by przynajmniej dać tej płycie szansę. Wydana w oryginalnej, kontrowersyjnej okładce (żadna duża wytwórnia by tego projektu dzisiaj nie puściła...) reedycja zrealizowanego w 1971 roku jedynego, bardzo rzadkiego, za to świetnego albumu totalnie zapomnianej, hardrockowej brytyjskiej formacji (dwóch białych Angoli + dwóch mieszkańców Barbadosu).
Płytę wypełniały riffujące, hard rockowe (choć polane psychodelicznym, bądź progresywnym sosem) utwory w klimacie dokonań Horse, Incredible Hog, Stray czy Leaf Hound. Oryginalny winyl Polydoru w stanie MINT- wart jest dzisiaj 700-800 euro, więc bez wątpienia warto zainteresować się tą perfekcyjnie brzmiącą reedycją! Dodatkowo dołączono utwór z B-strony jedynego singla grupy (1970) oraz niepublikowany kawałek z 1971 roku.

Kilka lat temu odwiedzając londyński sklep muzyczny „HMV” na Oxford Street ujrzałem płytę, która długi czas spędzała mi sen z powiek. Na mej prywatnej liście w umownej kategorii „najbardziej poszukiwanych i pożądanych obiektów” zajmowała jedno z czołowych pozycji. Przez moment sparaliżowało mnie. Czy to nie sen? Czy ja dobrze widzę? Czy to na pewno jest to, o czym myślę widząc nazwę grupy? Fakt, okładka nie ta. Zmieniona. Oryginalna namieszała wówczas dość mocno. Ale na Boga – minęło tyle lat, więc nie sądzę, by dziś mogła wywołać zgorszenie. Trudno. Widać taka wola wydawcy. Dodano też (dość dwuznaczny) tytuł „Turns You On”, ale utwory wypisane na odwrocie płyty zgadzały się co do joty. Tak jak i nazwa zespołu. LUV MACHINE.

Niektóre źródła podają, że ojczyzną LUV MACHINE była Nowa Zelandia. Błąd, choć rzeczywiście zespół pochodził z dość dalekiego i egzotycznego jak dla Europejczyka regionu. Ojczyzną grupy był bowiem Barbados – tropikalna wyspa położona na Małych Antylach, w basenie Morza Karaibskiego. W latach 60-tych pod względem muzycznym Barbados zdominowane było przez amerykański popowy soul z domieszką calypso przyprawione lokalnym folklorem. Dla turystów odwiedzających ten uroczy zakątek była to zapewne jedna z atrakcji, którą wspomina się potem w gronie przyjaciół i znajomych ale nie dla młodego Errola Bradshawa, perkusisty i wokalisty The Blue Rhythm Combo działającego w stolicy Barbadosu, Bridgetown. Był rok 1968, kiedy muzyk zafascynował się psychodelią, bluesem i mocnym rockiem. Płyty Hendrixa, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, Creedence Clearwater Revival, tudzież innych mniej znanych wykonawców wywróciły mu świat do góry nogami. Postanowił założyć zespół, który z założenia miał grać mocno, głośno i na pewno nie będzie grał turystom do tańca. Swoim pomysłem zaraził dwójkę przyjaciół: gitarzystę Michaela Bishopa i basistę Merlina Norville’a. Projekt został nazwany Luv Machine. Dość ryzykownie, bowiem w slangu tak określało się kobietę ogarniętą nienasyconą żądzą do miłości fizycznej. Umiejętnie łącząc rock i soul z domieszką klimatów karaibskich szybko zyskali rozgłos. Pierwszy singiel „Build Me Up Buttercup” wydany latem 1969 roku stał się krajowym hitem, a trio zostało kilka razy zaproszone do telewizyjnego show. Tamtejsi prezenterzy z pełnym entuzjazmem zapowiadali ich jako „pionierów nowego, krajowego brzmienia”.

W tym właśnie czasie na grupę zwrócił uwagę brytyjski menadżer Malcolm West, który przekonał muzyków, by przenieśli się do Anglii. „Przeprowadzka” odbyła się pod koniec roku i na początku przyniosła muzykom duże rozczarowanie. Przede wszystkim narzekali na brak odpowiedniej gotówki, pojawiły się problemy mieszkaniowe i uprzedzenia rasowe. Te ostatnie szczególnie dawało się odczuć podczas pierwszych klubowych występów. Biała publiczność bardzo podejrzliwie patrzyła na trzech czarnych facetów, którzy zjawili się nie wiadomo skąd i nie wiadomo po co? Jednak po chwili dali się ponieść muzyce granej ze sceny, a początkowa wrogość przeradzała się w zachwyt. Występy w tymczasowo „rodzinnym” Wolverhampton szybko zamieniły się w koncerty w tak legendarnych miejscach jak londyński klub „Marquee”, czy liverpoolski „The Cavern”. Były też wypady na kontynent: do Włoch i Niemiec gdzie koncertowali z grupą Sweet. Kariera LUV MACHINE zaczęła nabierać rozpędu. „Nikt nie chciał wierzyć, że zespół pochodzący z Barbadosu może grać mocnego acid rocka. Dla Europejczyka to był pewien szok. My z kolei poznawaliśmy muzykę takich grup jak Pink Floyd, King Crimson i ELP o istnieniu których nie mieliśmy do tej pory pojęcia” – wspomina Errol Bradshaw we wkładce do kompaktowej reedycji płyty.

Frustracja spowodowana rozłąką z domem, oraz problemy z wizą spowodowały, że grupę opuścił basista Merlin Norville. Jego miejsce zajął Brytyjczyk, John Jeavons, grający do tej pory w kilku lokalnych blues rockowych zespołach (prywatnie przyjaciel Glenna Huges’a!). Na dodatek Malcolm West przyprowadził ze sobą jeszcze jednego muzyka, gitarzystę Boba Bowmana. W ten oto sposób trio LUV MACHINE stało się kwartetem.

W lipcu 1970 roku muzycy weszli do londyńskiego studia Philips i pod okiem producenta Martina Halla zarejestrowali swój jedyny jak się miało okazać album zatytułowany po prostu „Luv Machine”. Wspomina Bradshaw: „Materiał na płytę powstał w przeciągu sześciu tygodni. Nagrania trwały zaś jedynie przez weekend plus jedną noc. To było istne szaleństwo”. Album pilotował singiel z nagraniem „Witches Wand”/”In The Early Hours”. Sporo zamieszania i wrzawy narobiło się wokół okładki, która przedstawiała rozłożone nogi kobiece wystające z gramofonu. Jedni uznali ją za obsceniczną, inni widzieli w niej… pornografię! W niektórych krajach, w tym w Australii i Nowej Zelandii album został całkowicie wycofany ze sprzedaży, a pochodzące z niego nagrania dostały „dożywotni zakaz prezentacji w środkach masowego przekazu”. Paranoja! O dziwo w Stanach, które na tym punkcie szczególnie są wyczulone, płytę można było nabyć bez żadnych problemów.

„Luv Machine” to album dla tych, którzy uwielbiają brytyjski wczesny hard rock i blues rock. Jest tu miejsce na funk, uduchowioną psychodelię i progresję. Krąży ta muzyka gdzieś w okolicach Killing Floor, Black Sabbath, King Crimson i Jefferson Airplane, a wszystko to podlane klimatami Karaibów. Nie jest to płyta, która zmieniła oblicze muzyki rockowej, która rzuca na kolana. Raczej z gatunku tych, których słuchanie sprawia wielką radość i przyjemność. Pierwsze dwa nagrania „Witches Wand” i „You’re Suprised” trwające w sumie około sześciu minut to połączenie psychodelii, bluesa i.., punk rocka. Perkusista trzyma uwagę słuchacza swymi ostrymi i potężnymi bębnami. „Happy Children” z powodzeniem mógłby pojawić się na każdym albumie Led Zeppelin po 1973 roku. „Maybe Tomorrow” z organową wstawką w środku i pulsującym basem jest tak prosty, że ociera się o geniusz. Z kolei „Reminiscing” ma fantastyczną pop rockową melodię, co wcale nie jest zarzutem. Wręcz przeciwnie. I tak można by jeszcze wymieniać inne tytuły, analizować, porównywać, oceniać. Oryginalna płyta to dwanaście świetnie zagranych numerów, które koniecznie trzeba poznać i posłuchać. Do kompaktowej wersji wydanej dopiero w 2006 roku przez Rise Above dodano sześć rzadkich nagrań, w tym drugi, nigdy nie wydany singiel i wczesne nagrania demo zespołu z pierwszym basistą.

Errol Bradshaw i Michael Bishop przybyli do Anglii na podstawie wizy turystycznej, a gdy próby jej przedłużenia nie powiodły się musieli opuścić Wlk. Brytanię. Kiedy więc Polydor wydał w styczniu 1971 roku album „Luv Machine” zespół faktycznie już nie istniał. Dziś oryginalny i rzadko widywany w swej pierwotnej okładce longplay osiąga na giełdach płytowych cenę powyżej 250 funtów. Wśród kolekcjonerów czarnych płyt wciąż jest grzesznym obiektem pożądania...
