..::OPIS::.. The highly anticipated 3rd full-length by this U.S. band. Since the dawn of the Paleolithic age, mankind has recorded spectacular scenes of death, whether in scenes of cannibal feasts crudely etched on cave walls, massacres immortalized in glyphs adorning monuments of the ancient kingdoms, or in chance recordings of grisly accidents, compiled and sold on home video to those with a thirst for that which is denied to them by our "civilized" society. Spawned in the contaminated sewers of Santa Cruz, California in 2013, Dipygus began as a four-piece mutation performing rudimentary styles of Death Metal, a sonic evolution of the tradition continued from the time of Cro-Magnons. A 2015 demo recording, the earliest surviving documentation of the band, reveled in unexplained and bizarre events, including peculiar methods of whale carcass disposal and otherworldly monsters from on and off the silver-screen. After a lineup change in 2016, Dipygus recorded the "Long Pig Feast" EP, which featured terrifying rites, ritual mutilations and ominous sightings of a Mesozoic relic in the heart of the Congo. Their debut album, "Deathooze", slowly de-composed in the murky shallows of powerplant runoff in the Monterey Bay, ultimately being recorded in 2018. Though quickly banned in over 16 countries, Dipygus´ debut album attracted immediate attention among slime fetishists and similarly deviant circles. Placed appropriately alongside the Fiji mermaids and other grotesque artefacts found in curio cabinets of modern-day antiquarians, "Deathooze" continued the band´s exploration of inexplicable incidents, mysterious beasts and shocking carnage, including genuine audio recovered from a fatal attack at the hands of an ape gone mad! Following their debut album, Dipygus was conjoined with an additional member, and began a new exploration in search of secrets hidden in the jungles of lost continents, where life is cheap. After successful initiation into the shadowy world of black-market cuisine, an agreement was reached with Memento Mori for the release of the band´s second full-length, "Bushmeat". Showcasing more exotic and repulsive themes of the supernatural and taboo, "Bushmeat" presented an uncensored and unrelenting spectacle, with each element of the previous work irresponsibly taken to a further extreme. A prime cut of raw and grueling terror, it was fit for consumption by headhunters, body-snatchers, toad-venom junkies, cargo cultists, aquatic ape theorists, disaster tourists, carriers of tropical disease, voodoo practitioners and orgone revivalists only. All others having since been warned, Dipygus return to time primordial with an elegantly self-titled third album. Suitably graced with evocative cover art courtesy of Hayden Hall, Dipygus thrusts the helpless listener into a psychedelic jungle of grisly delights. At 10 songs in 41 minutes, the quartet qualify their most lengthy recording yet with maximum delirium and characteristically crushing execution. Everything here feels massive -tone, feel, supernatural aura- yet somehow simultaneously exhibits a spacious quality that´s unsettling to the Nth degree. Perhaps that´s due to Dipygus´ increasingly twisted songwriting, neither "tech" nor improvisatory, but a certain "elevated caveman" aspect that pushes primitivism toward mind-bending ends. Fleeting-yet-haunting leads also play a part in Dipygus´ menagerie of malodorousness, exacerbating the psychotic reactions in their humid, hellish jungle, and even touches of way-back synths get mangled within, melting into the fuckton heaviness of Dipygus´ riffing. Their structuring is intuitive and yet unpredictable which keeps things both engaging and exciting. Moreover, with their knack of providing standout parts in each of the songs when you least expect it, it's impossible not to remain awestruck. In addition to the myriad music patterns that are equally matched by phenomenally diverse vocals, they are able to inject melodic bits and even searing solos into the music for added emphasis, all of which only enhances the auditory experience each time. Trwający blisko 80 minut, kapitalny i bezcenny od strony historycznej album, zawierający unikalny występ The Beatles (z Ringo Starrem na perkusji) zarejestrowany w legendarnym hamburskim klubie w ostatnim tygodniu grudnia 1962 roku. Mający już na koncie wydany przez EMI singiel "Love Me Do" zespół musiał odegrać/odpracować zakontraktowane dużo wcześniej występy i jest to muzyczna rozkosz dla każdego fana Wspaniałej Czwórki! Oprócz kilku kawałków znanych choćby z nagranego już miesiąc potem LP "Please Please Me", grupa wykonała sporo popowych i rockandrollowych standardów. Jakość dźwięku jest bardzo dobra (nieco lepsza niż na oryginalnych, wydanych po raz pierwszy w 1977 roku płytach), choć nie idealna, ale wszystko świetnie słychać! CD zawiera niepublikowany na płycie, niemal maniakalny "My Girl Is Red Hot", a także (jako bonus) "Money" w wykonaniu towarzyszącej Beatlesom grupy King Size Taylor And The Dominoes. Płyta chyba nigdy nie ukaże się oficjalnie, gdyż w wyniku wieloletnich działań The Beatles, wyrokiem sądu została wycofana z muzycznego rynku. ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. ..::OPIS::.. Dziś dużo się dyskutuje o widoczności kobiet w punku, zwłaszcza na scenie, a nie tylko przed nią. W 1980 roku nie było chyba wątpliwości, że punk jest również tworzony przez kobiety i dla kobiet. Przynajmniej w Niemczech... Jednym z najgorętszych i najbardziej utytułowanych zespołów punkowych był HANS-A-PLAST z Hanoweru. W ich składzie grali Annette Benjamin, potężna wokalistka o niesamowitej charyzmie scenicznej, Renate Baumgart na basie i Bettina Schröder na perkusji. Jens Meyer i Klaus-Michael Polten grali na gitarach; oboje założyli wpływową wytwórnię No Fun, Hollow Skai, aby zapewnić zespołowi niezależność artystyczną. 2 lipca 1980 roku HANS-A-PLAST wystąpił w Studiu A stacji WDR w Kolonii, gdzie wykonał zestaw najlepszych utworów, zaczynając od „Rock'n Roll Freitag”, a kończąc na wszystkich quasi-przebojach, takich jak „Für 'ne Frau”, „Polizeiknüppel”, „Lederhosentyp”, „Spielfilm”, „Es brennt” i „Hau ab du stinkst”. Szósta płyta studyjna w dorobku kanadyjskiego kwartetu Panzerfaust to jednocześnie domknięcie serii albumów, nad którą zespół pracował w niezmienionym składzie od 2019 roku. 22 listopada 2024 roku nakładem niemieckiej wytwórni Eisenwald ukazało się wydawnictwo The Suns of Perdition – Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion. Album, który zagości w niejednym podsumowaniu najlepszych płyt tego roku. Osoby, które po poprzednim, trzecim rozdziale The Astral Drain stawiały na Kanadyjczykach krzyżyk, mogą odetchnąć z ulgą, a przy tym bić się w pierś. Można powiedzieć, że wrócił stary dobry Panzerfaust, który nie uznaje kompromisów i nie pozostawia żadnych wątpliwości odnośnie do obranego przez siebie kierunku. Styl wytyczony na pierwszej i drugiej części The Suns of Perdiion, czyli War, Horrid War oraz Render unto Eden (nasza recenzja tutaj) znów wziął górę nad melodyjnymi i instrumentalnymi wstawkami, które na The Astral Drain nie spotkały się z najlepszym odbiorem fanów. Panzerfaust i ich The Suns of Perdition – Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion to nieco ponad trzy kwadranse wypełnione po brzegi fantastyczną produkcją i świetnymi kompozycjami. Do kotła wrzucono black, death, blackened death, a nawet post metal. Są tu motywy, które zadowolą entuzjastów Mgły i Deathspell Omega, ale również zwolenników Marduka czy Ulcerate. Kanadyjczycy kroczą jednak ścieżką wytyczoną przez siebie, nie kopiując ślepo, lecz wyciągając z esencji różnych gatunków to, co najlepsze. W efekcie otrzymujemy pięć dłuższych kawałków, których odsłuch w całości przynosi sporo satysfakcji. Muszę przyznać, że Panzerfaust w takim wydaniu „wchodzi” od pierwszego odsłuchu. Całość otwiera potężny The Hesychasm Unchained, który od pierwszych sekund dowodzi, że czwórka z Kanady odrobiła lekcję – nad kompozycją unoszą się bowiem echa Promethean Fire czy The Snare of the Fowler z drugiego rozdziału serii. Numer ten świetnie brzmi też w wykonaniu na żywo, czego świadkiem byłem podczas listopadowego koncertu grupy w krakowskim Hype Parku. Rozpędzona machina nie zatrzymuje się – When Even the Ground Is Hostile to mój osobisty faworyt z nowego krążka Panzerfaust. Kwintesencja połączonych wokali Kaizera i Goliatha, z intrygującymi riffami i wpadającymi w ucho zmianami tempa. Do tego nihilistyczne przesłanie ”fuck hope”, które zdaje się perfekcyjnie spinać warstwę tekstową całego albumu. Po dwóch potężnych ciosach, The Suns of Perdition – Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion nieco zwalnia. Niemniej jednak utwór The Damascene Conversions ma w sobie coś intrygującego, co przywodzi na myśl eksperymenty grupy z pierwszego rozdziału Słońc. Spora to zasługa Ahmeta İhvani, który odpowiedzialny był za nagranie partii akustycznych na bağlamie, instrumencie strunowym z Bliskiego Wschodu. Ten niewielki element dodaje utworowi mistycznego klimatu, perfekcyjnie kontrastując z potężnymi riffami, blastami, growlami. Czwarty numer na najnowszym albumie Panzerfaust to kolejna solidna porcja metalu i dowód kunsztu muzycznego całego kwartetu. Occam’s Fucking Razor (ocenzurowany przez niektóre platformy streamingowe do tytułu Occam’s Razor – serio!?) bez wątpienia zostanie faworytem wielu osób, które na niego trafią. Znów gdzieś w tle unoszą się echa bliskowschodnich inspiracji, ale przy tym znów warstwa muzyczna nie bierze jeńców. Muzycy odnoszą się do zasady brzytwy Ockhama, podobnie jak średniowieczny filozof, dążąc do wyjaśnienia świata w możliwie najprostszy sposób. W tym sposobie jest jednak metoda, która urzeczywistnia się w każdej sekundzie nowego wydawnictwa Panzerfaust. Na koniec zostaje najdłuższa kompozycja na płycie, czyli To Shadow Zion (No Sanctuary). Numer otwierają dźwięki niby trąb jerychońskich, które raz po raz tworzą ciekawy ambient dla tego utworu. We wstępie znalazł się też recytowany fragment wybitnej powieści Droga Cormaka McCarthy’ego (polecam lekturę). Tekst numeru naszpikowany odwołaniami do filozofii egzystencjalizmu, stanowi swoiste zamknięcie ostatniego rozdziału The Suns of Perdition. Dominuje tu wizja końca świata, choć gdzieś jeszcze tli się promyk nadziei, że natura się odrodzi. Ostatnią kropkę stawia fragment Somewhere, a new sun rises // But all our graves go unvisited in the end // At Shadow Zion. Album Panzerfaust The Suns of Perdition – Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion można traktować dwójnasób. Z jednej strony, jest to idealne, wymarzone wręcz, zwieńczenie kwadrylogii. Z drugiej zaś, krążek świetnie radzi sobie na własną rękę, więc może być dobrym punktem wyjścia dla osób, które nie miały jeszcze styczności z dyskografią Kanadyjczyków. Wyjątkowość twórczości Panzerfaust bazuje na powtarzających się stałych elementach, a te zdają się przewodzić wszystkim rozdziałom The Suns of Perdition – Słońc Wiecznego Potępienia. Tylko tyle czeka ludzkość – całkowita zagłada, gdy wybrzmią ostatnie trąby, te same, które słychać na koniec płyty. To Shadow Zion już od pierwszego odtworzenia zagościł na stałe w moim odtwarzaczu, gdyż jest to album niezwykle równy, dopracowany, świadomie skomponowany i precyzyjnie nagrany. Klasycznie, na wszelkie zachwyty zasługuje odpowiedzialny za zestaw perkusyjny Alexander Kartashov, przez niektórych porównywalny do Darkside’a, Mam jednak wrażenie, że nie tylko bębniarz, ale i cały zespół najnowszym krążkiem udowodnili, że pora oderwać niesłusznie przylepioną łatkę „worship bandu”. Panzerfaust i ich The Suns of Perdition – Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion to pozycja obowiązkowa. Jedna z najmocniejszych kandydatur do płyty roku 2024. Vlad Most bands are lucky to have one breakout album that sticks in the minds of fans for years to come. Rarer still are bands that release an album that affects the genre itself in a positive way. These are the bands who are considered outliers; those who take the road less traveled at great risk for the potential of great reward. The tetralogy that is “The Suns of Perdition” is itself an outlier work created by outlier musicians; its intense conclusion will capture the hearts of long time fans and define a new standard for dissonant black metal records moving forward. Panzerfaust are a four piece hailing from Mississauga, ON (Canada) that formed in 2005 with founding members Brock Van Dijk (Vocals/Guitar) & Goliath (Vocals). Once the concept of the “The Suns of Perdition” began to materialize in Brock’s mind, a critical line up change occurred which saw Thomas Gervais (Bass) and Alexander Kartashov (Drums) enter the fold. Together, these four outlier musicians have manifested their magnum opus that took over a decade to realize in full. In the spirit of this accomplishment, it is only fair that we take a look back at chapters I, II, & III before diving into the fourth and final chapter. The lore surrounding Panzerfaust’s “The Suns of Perdition” revolves around exploring themes of war through the perspective of historical recounting of events, the philosophy of war, the horrors of death, and the inevitability of the destructive human condition. The work’s title seems to strongly connect to the Biblical verses referring to the “sons of perdition”, or said another way ‘men doomed to destruction’. Furthermore, the word perdition means “eternal damnation” or “utter destruction” and has been used as a synonym for ‘hell’. The complexity and layers that encompasses the work’s title is concentrated in four distinct albums (or chapters) that each have a distinct musical expression. “Chapter I: War, Horrid War” (2019) has an aggressive dissonant black metal sound with lyrics that highlight specific war events like The Day After Trinity, mass graves in Stalingrad during WW2, and the poems from Canadian WW1 author Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. “Chapter II: Render unto Eden” (2020) took a turn towards a more atmospheric sound that induces a trance-like state of mind. This chapter lyrically focused more on the philosophy of war such as entering into a Faustian bargain to prevail in war, John Milton’s philosophical case for the right to freedom of speech & expression, and Blaise Pascal’s famous wager on believing in God as a rational human. “Chapter III: The Astral Drain” (2022) increased the atmospheric elements in the music by adding more tribal style beats and four instrumental tracks dedicated to negative emotions. Both the music and lyrical content seem to point to a sense of dread; the crushing doom felt moments before your death. And now we have “Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion” (2024) which is the most angry sounding album of the tetralogy with a great sense of finality. Lyrically, the final chapter focuses on our apocalypse & how the cycling of civilizations through time is inevitable. “Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion”, like in previous chapters, has deep meaning and symbolism in the song titles and lyrics. Dissecting the album title, Zion refers to “utopia” and the shadow is in reference to Carl Jung’s psychological concept of “The Shadow”; the part of our psyche that we repress because it is socially unacceptable, harmful to others, or detrimental to our own health. Song titles such as ‘The Hesychasm Unchained’ and ‘The Damascene Conversions’ have a Christian theology origin that is used to mirror the grandeur of the apocalypse and spiritual ramifications of warmongering itself. Within the lyrics, we continue to hear references to spiritual texts, but by no means is this a religious album. I believe the choice here is to highlight how when humans approach their end, even if it is by their own hand, this primordial desire to find solace in something cosmic is innate. The brutality of these topics are delivered by powerful dual vocals from Brock & Goliath and often sound like desperate pleas, angry cries of desperation, and guttural sorrow. The range of these emotive vocal stylings are best presented on the songs ‘The Damascene Conversions’ & ‘To Shadow Zion (No Sanctuary).’ Musically, the final chapter is an amalgamation of all previous musical styles explored in the tetralogy, yet the tone is by far the most angry and aggressive. The two main singles for the record ‘When Even The Ground is Hostile’ & ‘Occam's Fucking Razor’ are exemplary of the ferocity I keep referring to. Both songs have movements with incredibly fast pacing in the riffing and drumming that harken back to Marduk level intensity; a style of black metal not fully displayed on previous chapters. Panzerfaust’s signature dissonance is still present however, these riffs are used as a way to create a dizzying chaos rather than atmosphere. Simply put, these songs sound like you're stuck fighting for your life at ground zero of the battlefield. ‘The Damascene Conversions’ breaks up the album with its mid-tempo pacing and incorporates atmospheric elements most similar to “Chapter III”. The guest baglama performance by Ahmet lhvani blends perfectly into the percussive complexity of the track and adds a very welcomed mystical element to the work. Another interesting dimension added to this song (and a first for the tetralogy) is the doomy/sludgy outro that Panzerfaust executes exceptionally well. As incredible as the first four songs of “Chapter IV” are, the final track not only gives the album a great sense of finality but is a very effective conclusion to the work itself. ‘To Shadow Zion (No Sanctuary)’ opens with an ominous sample of sirens followed by a nuclear bomb explosion, which then opens up into a spoken word passage from the post-apocalyptic novel “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy. A combination of engaging jungle drum beats and evolving dissonant riffs are the backbone of this song and build steadily every three minutes until the crescendo at about minute six. Here, Panzerfaust approximates a beautiful flow state reminiscent of the iconic conclusion of ‘O Father, O Satan, O Sun’ by Behemoth. “Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion” brilliantly ties the threads laid out in the previous three chapters while, once again, maintaining its own identity. Every musician’s contribution to this epic finale gloriously shines; all parts equally important to executing the master vision. By its own merit, this album is a fantastic listen for any fans of dissonant atmospheric black metal; and may even secure a spot on your 2024 Album of The Year lists. However, in context to the tetralogy, it falls just shy of first place with “Chapter II: Render unto Eden” securing the number one spot. The meticulous crafting of “The Suns of Perdition” tetralogy and its subsequent success globally, cement Panzerfaust as an outlier in the black metal world. Not only did they execute their magnum opus as a cohesive unit over the last six years, but they have also reached a level of prestige in the rich history of Canadian black metal. Klasycznie, na wszelkie zachwyty zasługuje odpowiedzialny za zestaw perkusyjny Alexander Kartashov, przez niektórych porównywalny do Darkside’a, Mam jednak wrażenie, że nie tylko bębniarz, ale i cały zespół najnowszym krążkiem udowodnili, że pora oderwać niesłusznie przylepioną łatkę „worship bandu”. Panzerfaust i ich The Suns of Perdition – Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion to pozycja obowiązkowa. Jedna z najmocniejszych kandydatur do płyty roku 2024. Vlad Most bands are lucky to have one breakout album that sticks in the minds of fans for years to come. Rarer still are bands that release an album that affects the genre itself in a positive way. These are the bands who are considered outliers; those who take the road less traveled at great risk for the potential of great reward. The tetralogy that is “The Suns of Perdition” is itself an outlier work created by outlier musicians; its intense conclusion will capture the hearts of long time fans and define a new standard for dissonant black metal records moving forward. Panzerfaust are a four piece hailing from Mississauga, ON (Canada) that formed in 2005 with founding members Brock Van Dijk (Vocals/Guitar) & Goliath (Vocals). Once the concept of the “The Suns of Perdition” began to materialize in Brock’s mind, a critical line up change occurred which saw Thomas Gervais (Bass) and Alexander Kartashov (Drums) enter the fold. Together, these four outlier musicians have manifested their magnum opus that took over a decade to realize in full. In the spirit of this accomplishment, it is only fair that we take a look back at chapters I, II, & III before diving into the fourth and final chapter. The lore surrounding Panzerfaust’s “The Suns of Perdition” revolves around exploring themes of war through the perspective of historical recounting of events, the philosophy of war, the horrors of death, and the inevitability of the destructive human condition. The work’s title seems to strongly connect to the Biblical verses referring to the “sons of perdition”, or said another way ‘men doomed to destruction’. Furthermore, the word perdition means “eternal damnation” or “utter destruction” and has been used as a synonym for ‘hell’. The complexity and layers that encompasses the work’s title is concentrated in four distinct albums (or chapters) that each have a distinct musical expression. “Chapter I: War, Horrid War” (2019) has an aggressive dissonant black metal sound with lyrics that highlight specific war events like The Day After Trinity, mass graves in Stalingrad during WW2, and the poems from Canadian WW1 author Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. “Chapter II: Render unto Eden” (2020) took a turn towards a more atmospheric sound that induces a trance-like state of mind. This chapter lyrically focused more on the philosophy of war such as entering into a Faustian bargain to prevail in war, John Milton’s philosophical case for the right to freedom of speech & expression, and Blaise Pascal’s famous wager on believing in God as a rational human. “Chapter III: The Astral Drain” (2022) increased the atmospheric elements in the music by adding more tribal style beats and four instrumental tracks dedicated to negative emotions. Both the music and lyrical content seem to point to a sense of dread; the crushing doom felt moments before your death. And now we have “Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion” (2024) which is the most angry sounding album of the tetralogy with a great sense of finality. Lyrically, the final chapter focuses on our apocalypse & how the cycling of civilizations through time is inevitable. “Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion”, like in previous chapters, has deep meaning and symbolism in the song titles and lyrics. Dissecting the album title, Zion refers to “utopia” and the shadow is in reference to Carl Jung’s psychological concept of “The Shadow”; the part of our psyche that we repress because it is socially unacceptable, harmful to others, or detrimental to our own health. Song titles such as ‘The Hesychasm Unchained’ and ‘The Damascene Conversions’ have a Christian theology origin that is used to mirror the grandeur of the apocalypse and spiritual ramifications of warmongering itself. Within the lyrics, we continue to hear references to spiritual texts, but by no means is this a religious album. I believe the choice here is to highlight how when humans approach their end, even if it is by their own hand, this primordial desire to find solace in something cosmic is innate. The brutality of these topics are delivered by powerful dual vocals from Brock & Goliath and often sound like desperate pleas, angry cries of desperation, and guttural sorrow. The range of these emotive vocal stylings are best presented on the songs ‘The Damascene Conversions’ & ‘To Shadow Zion (No Sanctuary).’ Musically, the final chapter is an amalgamation of all previous musical styles explored in the tetralogy, yet the tone is by far the most angry and aggressive. The two main singles for the record ‘When Even The Ground is Hostile’ & ‘Occam's Fucking Razor’ are exemplary of the ferocity I keep referring to. Both songs have movements with incredibly fast pacing in the riffing and drumming that harken back to Marduk level intensity; a style of black metal not fully displayed on previous chapters. Panzerfaust’s signature dissonance is still present however, these riffs are used as a way to create a dizzying chaos rather than atmosphere. Simply put, these songs sound like you're stuck fighting for your life at ground zero of the battlefield. ‘The Damascene Conversions’ breaks up the album with its mid-tempo pacing and incorporates atmospheric elements most similar to “Chapter III”. The guest baglama performance by Ahmet lhvani blends perfectly into the percussive complexity of the track and adds a very welcomed mystical element to the work. Another interesting dimension added to this song (and a first for the tetralogy) is the doomy/sludgy outro that Panzerfaust executes exceptionally well. As incredible as the first four songs of “Chapter IV” are, the final track not only gives the album a great sense of finality but is a very effective conclusion to the work itself. ‘To Shadow Zion (No Sanctuary)’ opens with an ominous sample of sirens followed by a nuclear bomb explosion, which then opens up into a spoken word passage from the post-apocalyptic novel “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy. A combination of engaging jungle drum beats and evolving dissonant riffs are the backbone of this song and build steadily every three minutes until the crescendo at about minute six. Here, Panzerfaust approximates a beautiful flow state reminiscent of the iconic conclusion of ‘O Father, O Satan, O Sun’ by Behemoth. “Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion” brilliantly ties the threads laid out in the previous three chapters while, once again, maintaining its own identity. Every musician’s contribution to this epic finale gloriously shines; all parts equally important to executing the master vision. By its own merit, this album is a fantastic listen for any fans of dissonant atmospheric black metal; and may even secure a spot on your 2024 Album of The Year lists. However, in context to the tetralogy, it falls just shy of first place with “Chapter II: Render unto Eden” securing the number one spot. The meticulous crafting of “The Suns of Perdition” tetralogy and its subsequent success globally, cement Panzerfaust as an outlier in the black metal world. Not only did they execute their magnum opus as a cohesive unit over the last six years, but they have also reached a level of prestige in the rich history of Canadian black metal.
