The Joshua Tree to piąty album studyjny irlandzkiego zespołu rockowego U2 z marca 1987 roku. Producentami byli Brian Eno i Daniel Lanois. Płyta została nagrana w Windmill Lane Studios i STS w Dublinie. The Joshua Tree to pierwszy duży i jak do tej pory największy sukces komercyjny U2. Dotąd sprzedano ponad 16 mln egzemplarzy tej płyty, a takie utwory jak With or Without You czy I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For przez wiele miesięcy zajmowały pierwsze miejsca list przebojów na całym świecie. Double DVD / 4:3 AC 3 Stereo / Dolby Digital 5.1 / 5.1 Surround Region Code: 0 (Free) / PAL Language: German / Subtitles: English Well, this DVD is one hell of a pleasant surprise, even if it uses the terms Krautrock in a wider and more liberal sense of the word than our beloved site does. Of the six groups on this DVD, only two (Guru and Duul) fits in our description of Krautrock, while two more (Birth and Jane) are placed in the Art Rock/ Heavy Prog realm, while Epitaph's early album could easily match those last two groups. This double disc was recorded in the closing days of 04 at the famous Rockpalast in two days. I will do a quick rundown of the groups as they appear on the two discs. Epitaph developed a heavy prog rock (I'm only familiar with their first two albums), but some 30 years later, they sound like a fairly average guitar dominated riffy hard rock, much like what Wishbone Ash has developed since the mid-70's. Nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering, not worth writing home about, it was pleasant to see them play with two original members in this reunion line-up. Guru Guru was easily this double set's best moment as clearly these veterans have kept an incredible enthusiasm and delivered us an incredibly fresh set, where nostalgia had no place. With only drummer Neumeier left from their original line-up, obviously their music is quite different than on those groundbreaking and experimental early Guru vinyls, but it is no-less worthy then their glory days. The line-up has been together for ten years and the musicians develop a very entertaining funky-ethnic-psych-jazz rock, communicating us their certain joie de vivre and a fairly visual show. Neumeier holds the great shape and plays drums, sings and adds crazy wind instrument, while Schaeffer also blows some mean winds and wails and the bassist and guitarists remain largely rhythmic. One of the jewels in this crown. Not an easy task to follow-up this combo, unless doing something completely different and this is exactly why Karthago was welcome. They play a very credible (and creditable ;-) blues rock with prog overtones and the quintet gets extra points for boasting an excellent Hammond player as well as good percussionist (congas mostly). While I may not familiar at all with this group's discography, I believe only the guitarist/singer is the only one remaining from their early days, but the KBman Ingo Bischof is a long-time veteran. Not really prog, but they could one day see their inclusion in prog-related. Closing off the first disc is Jane, one of those group that have simply never stopped playing, recording and touring. And by the sound of it, this has kept their enthusiasm on a very high level and their Hammond-driven heavy prog still sounding fresh. And the amazing thing is that most of the line-up are historic members from their early albums (Panka is still singing and drumming up a storm), while their guitarist is from another band's (present on this DVD) glory days. They only play three tracks, but are they really hot, extended, very well played and downright exciting. The group still knows how to pull shivers from their audiences with their dramatic ambiances and instrumental heroics. Truly a surprise, as I was not really expecting that much from this group. The second disc holds just as many superb moments, but in a more surprising mode. ADII was always a very loose and chaotic-sounding group on stage, and not that much has changed some 35 years later. This line-up is also loaded with the historic members from their early (and best) era. Not holding the same kind of shape and enthusiasm as their peers from Guru, they nevertheless play a credible set that reflects quite well their typical selves. Never a fan of Knaup's voice, they play two tracks from their Yeti album, but clearly once they go instrumental (the last and extended Kanaan track), ADII does show the sporadic brilliance that all Duulers wished them to consistent. Having seen them twice in the last decade, I knew what to expect, and I was not let down. Last (but not least) is another long-time survivor that has apparently never stopped either (to my best of knowledge anyway), and like Jane, Birth Control is a superb Hammond-driven heavy prog that puts the emphasis on then instruments rather than the vocals. And like Jane, they are headed by a singing drummer (Noske), but unlike their rivals, BC is a bit short on historic members. Most of the group is newer members (with Foller coming in to sing on one track as a guest), but the superb BC spirit is kept as their three extended tracks are sizzling and frying your brains, much like Jane did on the other disc. And like Jane, they rely on instrumental heroics, but never splurge in the dramatics the same way their competition does. But nevertheless (and despite my original - and unfounded - fears that BC was only the shadow of their former selves), BC draws this double-disc affair to an exciting close. So far, this is only the first release of this sort (that I am aware of), but hopefully not the last, because I know there are many classic 70's band still around waiting to get a chance for exposure. ..::OPIS::.. Pierwszy raz w oryginalnej okładce i ze znacznie poprawionym dźwiękiem! Klasyczny brytyjski album (wart na oryginalnym winylu ok. 3000 euro!!!) łączący ciężkawe, gitarowe brzmienia z nieco rozmarzonym, psychodelicznym folkiem (a także z bluesem) i nawiazujący do nagrań Fleetwood Mac (z okresu LP 'Then Play On'), wczesnych Wishbone Ash i Quicksilver. Cóż, okazało się przy okazji, że trzeci utwór z płyty nie nazywał się wcale 'Reprise' (jak widniało na starym i mało atrakcyjnym CD firmy Kissing Spell) ale 'Sad Story/Reprise'. Dodatkowo cztery nagrania demo - również świetnej, studyjnej jakości! Pochodzący z angielskiego Shrewsbury kwartet DOGFEET to jeden z bardzo wielu zespołów z lat 70-tych, który przemknął jak meteor przez rockowy nieboskłon pozostawiając na nim ślad w postaci jednej płyty (obecnie wartej 1200 euro) po czym zniknął w ciemnej otchłani zapomnienia. Co gorsze, wkrótce zaginęły też taśmy-matki, o które upomnieli się muzycy. Dwie dekady później firma Erebus wznowiła album posługując się oryginalną płytą winylową – całość została zremasterowana i udostępniona na czarnym krążku. Trevor Povey (g, voc), Dave Nichols (bg), Alan Pears (g, voc) i Derek Perry (dr) po raz pierwszy spotkali się pod koniec 1968 roku grając blues rocka jako Chicago Max, Sopwith Camel, Armageddon… W 1970 roku występując na scenie jako Malibu podpisali kontrakt z małą londyńską wytwórnią Reflection Records, która już na samym wstępie zażądała zmiany nazwy. Ponoć DOGFEET (Stopy psa) wymyślili na złość szefowi firmy, który nad wyraz kochał… koty. Pod koniec roku wydali swój debiutancki longplay zrealizowany w stołecznym AIR Studios, którego producentem był Andrew Cameron Miller. Choć wszystkie kompozycje były dziełem Trevora Poveya album jest zróżnicowany i interesujący. Krążek zawiera typową dla tego okresu mieszankę progresywnych dźwięków opartych na ciężkim rocku, bluesie i odchodzącej już psychodelii. Nasuwają się tu podobieństwa do Fleetwood Mac z Peterem Greenem z okresu płyty „Then Play On” z 1969 roku, wczesnego Wishbone Ash (dwie gitary prowadzące), choć może bardziej do Quicksilver Messenger Service. Acid rockowe klimaty San Francisco i Wschodniego Wybrzeża czuć tu mocniej niż brzmienie ówczesnego brytyjskiego rocka. Większość lokalnych zespołów klubowych w tej części USA, mogła pisać i odtwarzać taką właśnie muzykę. Grupie udało się stworzyć namiastkę własnego stylu a wiemy, że nigdy nie jest to łatwe. Trudno wyróżnić tu jakiś utwór. Słuchanie płyty to przyjemność w każdym calu, do którego idealnie wpasował się niski, atrakcyjny głos Alana Pearsa. Jeśli powiem, że „On The Road” nawiązuje do bluesowych korzeni zespołu, „Sad Story/Reprise” to progresywny kawałek, tnąca gitara Poveya zaskakuje fajnymi efektami w „Evil Woman”, a „Since I Went Away” to cudowna ballada w westernowym klimacie nie oznacza, że pozostałe kompozycje są słabsze. Album niestety nie przebił się na rynku i zniknął bez śladu, a wkrótce i sam zespół. Grupa reaktywowała się na moment w 1990 roku dając koncert z okazji 20-rocznicy wydania płyty, po czym muzycy wrócili do swoich zajęć. Sam krążek był kilkakrotnie wznawiany na winylu i kompakcie. ..::OPIS::.. Pierwszy raz w oryginalnej okładce i ze znacznie poprawionym dźwiękiem! Klasyczny brytyjski album (wart na oryginalnym winylu ok. 3000 euro!!!) łączący ciężkawe, gitarowe brzmienia z nieco rozmarzonym, psychodelicznym folkiem (a także z bluesem) i nawiazujący do nagrań Fleetwood Mac (z okresu LP 'Then Play On'), wczesnych Wishbone Ash i Quicksilver. Cóż, okazało się przy okazji, że trzeci utwór z płyty nie nazywał się wcale 'Reprise' (jak widniało na starym i mało atrakcyjnym CD firmy Kissing Spell) ale 'Sad Story/Reprise'. Dodatkowo cztery nagrania demo - również świetnej, studyjnej jakości! Pochodzący z angielskiego Shrewsbury kwartet DOGFEET to jeden z bardzo wielu zespołów z lat 70-tych, który przemknął jak meteor przez rockowy nieboskłon pozostawiając na nim ślad w postaci jednej płyty (obecnie wartej 1200 euro) po czym zniknął w ciemnej otchłani zapomnienia. Co gorsze, wkrótce zaginęły też taśmy-matki, o które upomnieli się muzycy. Dwie dekady później firma Erebus wznowiła album posługując się oryginalną płytą winylową – całość została zremasterowana i udostępniona na czarnym krążku. Trevor Povey (g, voc), Dave Nichols (bg), Alan Pears (g, voc) i Derek Perry (dr) po raz pierwszy spotkali się pod koniec 1968 roku grając blues rocka jako Chicago Max, Sopwith Camel, Armageddon… W 1970 roku występując na scenie jako Malibu podpisali kontrakt z małą londyńską wytwórnią Reflection Records, która już na samym wstępie zażądała zmiany nazwy. Ponoć DOGFEET (Stopy psa) wymyślili na złość szefowi firmy, który nad wyraz kochał… koty. Pod koniec roku wydali swój debiutancki longplay zrealizowany w stołecznym AIR Studios, którego producentem był Andrew Cameron Miller. Choć wszystkie kompozycje były dziełem Trevora Poveya album jest zróżnicowany i interesujący. Krążek zawiera typową dla tego okresu mieszankę progresywnych dźwięków opartych na ciężkim rocku, bluesie i odchodzącej już psychodelii. Nasuwają się tu podobieństwa do Fleetwood Mac z Peterem Greenem z okresu płyty „Then Play On” z 1969 roku, wczesnego Wishbone Ash (dwie gitary prowadzące), choć może bardziej do Quicksilver Messenger Service. Acid rockowe klimaty San Francisco i Wschodniego Wybrzeża czuć tu mocniej niż brzmienie ówczesnego brytyjskiego rocka. Większość lokalnych zespołów klubowych w tej części USA, mogła pisać i odtwarzać taką właśnie muzykę. Grupie udało się stworzyć namiastkę własnego stylu a wiemy, że nigdy nie jest to łatwe. Trudno wyróżnić tu jakiś utwór. Słuchanie płyty to przyjemność w każdym calu, do którego idealnie wpasował się niski, atrakcyjny głos Alana Pearsa. Jeśli powiem, że „On The Road” nawiązuje do bluesowych korzeni zespołu, „Sad Story/Reprise” to progresywny kawałek, tnąca gitara Poveya zaskakuje fajnymi efektami w „Evil Woman”, a „Since I Went Away” to cudowna ballada w westernowym klimacie nie oznacza, że pozostałe kompozycje są słabsze. Album niestety nie przebił się na rynku i zniknął bez śladu, a wkrótce i sam zespół. A do streamingu i fizycznej sprzedaży trafiła właśnie, po dziesięciomiesięcznej przerwie, trzecia odsłona archiwalnej serii koncertowej Can. Tym razem wybrano materiał z występu w niemieckiej miejscowości Cuxhaven, który odbył się 7 stycznia 1976 roku. W porównaniu z dwoma poprzednimi wydawnictwami, trwającymi po półtora godziny każde, "Live in Cuxhaven 1976" wypada mniej monumentalnie. To zaledwie 30-minutowy fragment koncertu. Muszę też przyznać, że trochę zaczęła mi doskwierać oprawa graficzna tych wydawnictw. O ile bardzo doceniam spójność i konsekwencję oprawy - na którą zawsze składa się podobny monochromatyczny rysunek oraz tytuł zapisany w innym kolorze - to te grafiki są po prostu mało atrakcyjne, eufemistycznie mówiąc. Tyle jeśli chodzi o minusy, bo sama muzyka jest jak zawsze świetna, czego nie psuje nawet dość średniej jakości brzmienie - i tak całkiem niezłe, jak na nagrania sprzed blisko pięćdziesięciu lat, pochodzące z prywatnej kolekcji. W tamtym czasie tracący na popularności Can był zmuszony do coraz większej kapitulacji artystycznej. Smutnym tego świadectwem jest zarejestrowany zaledwie pół roku po tym występie album "Flow Motion", zdominowany przez średniej jakości piosenki w stylistyce funku lub reggae. Czy muzycy faktycznie chcieli grać w ten sposób? "Live in Cuxhaven 1976" zdaje się rozwiewać te wątpliwości. Na żywo Can pozostał jednym z najbardziej ekscytujących zespołów w dziejach rocka. Nawet jeśli pojawiają się tu wpływy bardziej komercyjnych stylów - a te dość często przewijają się zwłaszcza w warstwie rytmicznej, tu jednak bardziej motorycznej - to idealnie wtapiają się w porywające, mocno psychodeliczne popisy kwartetu. Sekcja rytmiczna Holger Czukay i Jaki Liebzeit jak za najlepszych lat łączy niesamowitą intensywność z iście imponującą precyzją, a klawiszowiec Irmin Smith i gitarzysta Michael Karoli na zmianę zachwycają swoimi błyskotliwymi, a przy tym raczej lekkimi popisami. Jednak to przede wszystkim fantastycznie zgrany zespół, który może pozwolić sobie na dużo swobody. Oczywiście, nie są to kompletne improwizacje - punkt wyjścia stanowią kompozycje ze starszych płyt - jednak ostateczny efekt zwykle w znikomym stopniu przypomina pierwowzór. Krótszy czas trwania tej części serii jest zarówno wadą - pozostawia pewien niedosyt - jak i zaletą, np. w sytuacji, gdy długość poprzednich odsłon kogoś zniechęcała do odsłuchu - tym razem nie może już robić takich wymówek. Think about it, do you want to hear the same quality that Umphrey’s McGee, Widespread Panic, and Gov’t. Mule might have been doing 30-minute improvisations of putting audiences to sleep at times? I don’t think so. Not to put them down, but there comes a time where you need to take a bit of a break of cutting it down from 30 to 15 minutes of a jam session. But when it comes to a band like CAN, brother, you have no idea what you’re about to explore. This here is the next continuation of the live series from the band’s archive. From Stuttgart, Brighton, and now in Cuxhaven, Germany in 1976 at the peak of the punk movement, these four tracks see the quartet (Karoli, Czukay, Liebezeit, and Schmidt) getting the jamming grooves in an attitude that is like a ball of energy, being unleashed to the public. Cuxhaven is an independent town in the northernmost point of Lower Saxony. It is known for the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site, stunning landscapes of near-white sand beaches, mud flaps, and the gateway to the Wadden Sea National Park. The reason why the Cuxhaven sea is so beautiful, when those tides come out, you can walk up about 20 kilometres across the seabed. For a band like CAN to perform there, they make the alternate score to the seas so beautiful, intense, and right in front of your very eyes to witness those beaches coming to shore. Now I can’t recall if the band were promoting either Landed or Flow Motion release, but listening to this recording, you can tell that the band are revisiting their time with the United Artists label during the peak of the Damo-era. Karoli plays these extended versions on ‘Zwei’ as if he’s continuing where ‘Oh Yeah’ had left off from the Tago Mago album, giving Irmin and Jaki a chance to walk into the mid-fast tempos where Damo scatted and did these intense vocal lines to send shivers down the spine. You can imagine more of the pieces from their second album is like a semi-sequel to the grooves as the quartet have more carte blanche by taking a trip into the Egyptian desert, with some intense heat. ‘Eins’ opens the performance of CAN, walking into the territories of Sly and the Family Stone’s improvisation with some spaced out atmospheres that Irmin does on his keyboards to create that hypnotic effect for Michael to lay down some wah-wah grooves before Holger channels the sounds of Joseph “Lucky” Scott from his work with the late, great Curtis Mayfield’s sessions to the Super Fly soundtrack. CAN really have some knowledge of their soul/R&B arrangements. And to have that brutal fuzztone effect with the funky chicken, you can just imagine how much both of those two had a huge impact on the band’s sound. They proved themselves that they’re more than just a krautrock band, more than alumni’s to controversial composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, but dancing to the music with a brutal attack on the senses. Just as the first two revisit the Blaxploitation sounds and the Tago Mago period, ‘Drei’ is where the soup itself gets red hot. And you might just need to add a shit load of spices into the mix. The band go into this frenzy attack with Holger and Jaki adding more enough coal to the engine inside the train as they speed it up. Now I can’t tell if it’s either Czukay or Karoli doing all these scatting effects. But Michael lays down some clean-cut textures, but adding the Lou Reed-sque vibes for a brief moment, channeling Metal Machine Music for a brief moment. The closing track ‘Vier’ is where the audience joins in on the fun to clap along to the beat from the rhythm section in a reggae-like tone with swirling, hay-wiring effects that Irmin comes up with on his instruments to swoosh back and forth to the beat. When you put on a CAN album, you are in a world where your mind takes you into this whole other universe where it’s menacing, extreme, and right in front of your face. The continuation of the live recordings are a treat to hear more of the quartet’s mid-70s time period to see how much they were ahead of the ball game. And can (no pun intended) we expect something from the archives of hopefully the Damo Suzuki years? Let’s just cross our fingers. Alex stwierdził zaraz po wydaniu płyty, że to ostatni album i zamknął projekt uzasadniając to, że to co chciał przekazać zostało powiedziane i nie ma nic więcej do dodania. Płyta ma mocny polityczno-wojenny przekaz. Na okładce jest zdjęcie zatytułowane Point Blank Persuasion i przedstawia partyzantkę z Vietcongu prowadzoną na przesłuchanie. ..::OPIS::.. New Wave Of British Heavy Metal act Apocalypse from London was formed by guitarist Steve Grainger around 1980. The band emerged from two bands in North London. Phaze and Stone Lady. Originally Nick Brent Dave (MEX) Higgen (Stone Lady) and Marc and Steve Grainger.(Phaze) Mex left the band to move in a different direction and to set up the Octave Studio and PA Company in North London. Dave Robertson joined and Apocalypse were established. Ironicalyit was Dave (mex) higgen who named the band APOCALYPSE. It took the band two years to release their one and only single called "Stormchild" for Gate Records. After minor personnel problems with another band of the same name the band changed their name to Omega and recorded the number “Blood Sacrifice” for Ebony's rather obscure “Metal Warriors” compilation (issued in 1983). Steve Grainger explains that APOCALYPSE was more or less forced to look for a new name: “We were aware of one other band in the UK called APOCALYPSE, they were completely non-apocalyptic if you ask me. More of a pop band. But they were under the guidance of a major player in the UK music business so we felt that we would have to change our name. I was always against this. I thought they should change their name but I was overruled. We did get a fair bit of music press coverage during the argument though, so it was not all bad news." “The Prophet” was originally released on Rock Machine (basically a subdivision of Punk label Razor Records) in 1985. The line up consisted of Dave Robertson (bass, vocals), Nick Brent (guitars, vocals), Steve Grainger (lead guitars, keyboards, vocals) and Graham Roberts (drums). The High Roller re-issue of the album comes with new, superior cover artwork. The CD edition contains unreleased demo recordings of “Summertime”, “Heat of the Night”, “Abandon Hope”, “Blood Sacrifice” and “The Child” as exclusive bonus material. Steve Grainger explains how the original deal with Rock Machine came about in 1985: “There was a sniff of interest from one or two labels but nothing came of it, we weren't considered a big enough band. We would have tried to do it on our own again on Gate Records but then Rock Machine (aka Razor Records) got involved and we took it from there. Rock Machine kept sales figures pretty close to their chests but it was released worldwide on license. Nick and I regained the rights after five years [though, I think,delete this bit SG"> and that's how we are in a position to be re-releasing it again now on our own terms. I guess a few thousand must have been released, you can still pick up the original vinyl online, so they are about.” "The Prophet" was illegally re-issued on vinyl a couple of years back. Those counterfeit copies are annoying to any self-respecting rock band. “I have never traced exactly who was doing what”, states Steve Grainger. “It comes from Comet Records in Italy I believe, probably an original license holder to release the vinyl, but they took it further without permission to create a CD version and stick their logo on it. They are, I suspect, also behind a recent i-tunes/ e-music download. Apple have, to their credit, taken it off their site but I am still dealing with e-music who are less than quick in this matter. I have a copy of the i-tunes payment schedule but it doesn't say who the recipient of the money is.” Somehow the band Omega was lumped in with a few other progressive-sounding N.W.O.B.H.M. bands like Shiva, Chemical Alice, Legend (Jersey) and Bleakhouse. “We were not bothered about that, really”, says Steve. “We were in our own little bubble, doing our own thing and consciously avoiding whatever was trendy at the time. If people liked what we did that was great, if they didn't, then ... so what? We were in many ways quite reclusive in our writing. I certainly went out of my way to not be influenced too much by other bands. We like to do things our way and that was that.” The press was pretty kind to Omega in Britain as Steve explains: “The reviews were quite reassuring from the British music press. It was hardly front page stuff as far as they were concerned but they liked it on the whole, Europe was okay with it as I recall. Some French radio station did a show featuring it and from what I gather they loved it, they were particularly enthusiastic about my guitar work … hurrah! It was the American reviews that seemed to put a dampener on the album. I don't think that they got the idea of the prophet being metaphoric, taking it as a literal slur didn't go down too well. Also there was a feeling from them that they didn't want to be reminded about the 'doom and gloom' although funnily enough when the track 'The Final Countdown' was released by Europe, they were all over it like a rash. How wonderful it was to see young musicians with such foresight and wisdom etc., oh well ...” Guitarist/vocalist Nick Brent explains the meaning behind “The Prophet” in more detail: “Blimey, you could write a thesis on this one! In brief, the song 'The Prophet' describes the persecution of anyone who dares to publicly highlight the injustices inherent in long established organisations, religious or otherwise, or society as a whole. We used the Christian metaphor as the 'Christ' figure is apparent in most religions going back through the ages, representing the need for change when stagnation and decay in society lead to the oppression of sections of the population by the 'Chosen Few'. The ending - 'But why do you still smile?' - echoes both the insecurity of the status quo and the optimism that change can happen.” Quite an intellectual and interesting concept, no doubt about that. The original cover artwork implies that there might have been an anti-war message involved as well, which Nick confirms. “So the artwork is self explanatory now eh?”, he asks. And adds: “As children who grew up through the cold war with the threat of 'The Bomb', 'The Four Minute Warning', the Vietnam War, Trident etc., and the counter culture of the hippie movement, Greenham Common, Ban the Bomb marches et al, the threat of war was/is a constant in our lives. The human race's seemingly insatiable appetite for all things destructive is, fortunately, matched by a huge capacity for compassion, tolerance and understanding. The battle between good and evil is a constant in our lives.” The most unusual number on “The Prophet” is without a doubt the cover of “Day Tripper” by the Beatles. “I can't remember whose idea it was”, reflects Steve Grainger. “Definitely not because we were running short of material, our biggest headache was what to leave off the album. With hindsight perhaps we wouild not have used the track on the album as it doesn’t seem to sit right amongst the other tracks, but at the time we decided to include it. It is a yardstick to judge us by if you like - a song that everyone knows given the Apocalypse/Omega treatment. We like doing stuff like that. To be honest, most of the actual guitar riff would never have come from McCartney but we wouldn't have written a song like that. But put together, I reckon we added to it.” After the release of the album Omega were desperately looking for a tour as Steve remembers: “We had a few leads in that direction. But … in those days getting on tour as a support act to a bigger named band cost money … you know … the old handful of dosh in an envelope sort of thing. We even got given a price. 25 grand! That's £25,000, in those days a shed load of money. It only cost two or three grand to do the recording. Either way, Rock Machine wouldn't cough up the money so we were effectively stuffed. We were by then a bit too big for the smaller London pubs and clubs but not big enough for the bigger London venues, hence we did most of our London gigs at the Marquee, either as support to such bands as Pendragon, Rock Goddess, Clive Burr's Escape, (they were in effect Praying Mantis in all but name) or as a headline act ourselves.” Unfortunately, “The Prophet” remained Omega's one and only album: “We still had loads of material but without reasonable record company backing we didn't have the means to go back into the studio again. It was only later on with the reforming of Apocalypse that we had our own studio set up and could muck about with all the ideas we'd had, but Nick had gone off to concentrate on other projects and I was working with other songwriters. Mind you, it has to be said that the talk of of new songs has often been bandied around between me and Nick. Sadly, the passing of Dave Robertson was a bitter blow to us and it seemed like that was the end of it all. Who knows, our original bass player Mex may well have the time to get involved in a new project, as you may know he played some stuff on the 'Abandon Hope' album. So there you go. Never say never … it might happen yet!” Matthias Mader The first question that arose in my mind after I had finished listening to this record for the first time was: "what kind of music is this?". It was undeniably metal, and it was undeniably good. But there is something about this album that simply eludes easy branding and labelling. Heavy? Epic? Prog? Doom? NWOBHM? AOR? None of the above really, yet all of them are present, to various extents, in this little forgotten gem. The first track, The Dark, opens the album with a fittingly obscure, foreboding atmosphere: slow, barely audible drum and bass, supported by an evanescent keyboard line, which will make up for most of the musical backing for this song. The composition slowly builds up in volume, speed and power, and eventually erupts into a flaming guitar solo towards the third minute, only to fade back to being slow and haunting at 4:00. Another thirty seconds of atmosphere and eerie vocals, followed by an abrupt burst of power that leads the song to completion. Very dynamic and unpredictable track. Shadows of The Past is again marked by a number of interesting, attention-catching tempo changes. Definately worthy of mention the guitar solo, where Steve Grainger offers a display of fine musicianship and feeling. Very interesting keyboard support at 4:15, where Grainger (also keyboardist) succeeds at implementing the keyboard line into the guitar frame, arranging the two elements in such a way to make the two enrich one another, rather than making them overlap (a rather unpleasant occurance which is heard disturbingly often these days). Onto the title track, the nine minute epic The Prophet, presumably about Jesus (never actually mentioned in the lyrics, but the references seem to point towards that direction), starting off with an eerie (I'm aware I've used that adjective already, and it is no coincidence) acoustic intro. The song proceeds with alternating quiet, mellow parts, which tend to coincide with the singing, and louder, harsher sections, which are mainly instrumental. Very evocative, and very ahead of its time. Yesterday's children is charachterized by a remarkably more upbeat rythm than the previous tracks. When not busy crunching out solid rocky riffs, the guitar almost seems to want to imitate Steve Harris' "galloping", which certainly marks a strong change from the doom laden melodies that had trademarked the previous twenty minutes of this record. An overall good song, let down perhaps by a guitar solo that sounds slightly less inspired than the ones heard before. Drive Me Crazy is pure New Wave of British Heavy Metal: fast, short (clocking in at 3:40), energetic, this song is about a "high class woman" and her "long legs sprayed with silk". An easy melody, a catchy chorus and a perfectly fitting guitar solo, this is a song that is guaranteed to stay stuck in your head for a while. It would have made for an excellent single. Day Tripper. Myself being a patented Beatles basher, I frowned when I read the song title. Regardless of my prejudice though, I have to admit this reinterpretation of the old Beatles song was a complete success. Much like Drive Me Crazy, this cover bleeds british metal from every pore, with its sparkling rythm and some excellent six string work that gives the song a pleasant "heavy but not too heavy" rock metal feeling. Closing off the album after only six songs we find The Child. In this case the lyrics stand as the highlight of the song, short and simple, yet deep and meaningful, regarding the pain of growing up and losing one's innocence. If looking back on your childhood and youth awakens mixed or sad feelings in you, then this song is sure to touch you. The song itself does not differ significantly from the first three, though the long intro here leaves much more space to some very interesting bass and keyboard work. Differently from the other songs though, this one requires a bit of attention from the listener in order not to blend into the background. Just finished listening to this album, and yet again, I find myself wondering: "how do you classify this?". The best answer I have come up with, several months after my first listen, is "You don't". You simply sit back and enjoy the atmospheres, the elaborate yet accessible song structures, the eerie vocals, the perfect production, the fine arrangement of five instruments that complement each other flawlessly.
