Gdzieś na granicy między oldschoolem a techniką, Brute zdecydowanie znalazł złoty środek. To muzyka tworzona przez fanów death metalu – dla fanów death metalu.
Mogłaby być nieco dłuższa, bo 7 utworów (plus intro) w 35 minutach sprawi, że będziesz chciał więcej. Może ci goście mogliby się trochę bardziej postarać, skoro tak dobrze opanowali swoją formułę.
Z drugiej strony... Brute nie wynalazł żadnego koła zamachowego na nowo, ale te, które już istnieją, równie dobrze cię rozwalą.

An evil and macabre force was born in Slovakia and named Brute which is back after 3 fucking years with a third full-length slaughter called "Henchmen" spreading fear and chaos like never before and offering a carnage of great fucking quality! Brute is performing an Insane Death Metal and this release have a lot melodic elements but being fucking brutal with a brilliant fucking composition and an unique side making "Henchmen" an highlight in the shitty fucking genre! 8 songs of pure fucking butchery containing an intro and being all fucking excellent including a lot of catchy riffing making this fucking release very addictive and also having some weak parts but partially buried by the fucking awesome songwriting! The production is a complete fucking success, excellent mixing and this fucking shit sounds like thousands nuclear bombs exploding at the same fucking time and making us feel a total worldwide humanicide! The result of "Henchmen" despite some flaws is being fucking addictive from beginning to fucking end due to the perfect production and amazing composition making this third release a fucking must in the genre! Brute consists of Martin Calko (Vocals), Stefan Tokar (Guitars), Radoslav Michalko (Bass), Jirka Zajic (Drums) and the quartet is near fucking perfect in their execution delivering some brilliant fucking material! Martin on vocals is fucking great and powerful, Stefan is giving several amazing and catchy riffing, Radoslav also doing an amazing fucking job and finally Jirka is fucking awesome with a diverse drumming and sharing some insane fucking blastbeat! 35 minutes of pure fucking devastating Death Metal being not perfect but having everything to be a great fucking release making you fucking addicted with the amazing composition and "Henchmen" is without fucking doubt a fucking success and this third release is a mandatory piece of fucking shit in its kind! NIGDY NIE TRZEŹWIEĆ było kapelą z Opola, która powstała w czerwcu 1987r. Grupę tworzyli Agrest - voc, bass, texty, Baniak, zastąpiony potem przez Zbawiciela - gitara, wokal, Rosjan - perkusja. NNT grało dosyć oryginalny hc/punk w którym klimat tworzyły także ciekawe teksty. Grupa zarejestrowała dwa materiały studyjne w SSR Radio-Sygnały w Opolu, w tym drugim na perkusji zagrał Stopa z innej opolskiej kapeli RPA. Kapela zagrała sporo koncertów w całej Polsce. Na początku lat 90-tych chłopcy zmienili nazwą na Samba i Dżungla i zaczęli grać muzykę w stylu Nomeansno.

McCartney II to trzeci solowy album brytyjskiego muzyka i kompozytora Paula McCartneya, i pierwszy wydany po rozpadzie jego grupy Wings. Latem 1979 po wydaniu chłodno przyjętego albumu Back to the Egg z grupą Wings McCartney postanowił nagrać w pełni solowy album, pierwszy od dziesięciu lat. Tym razem jednak miała to być całkowicie nowatorska koncepcja polegająca na wprowadzeniu elektroniki. Artysta wykorzystał ówczesne syntezatory by je przede wszystkim rozpropagować. Album miał być swoistą kontynuacją i nawiązaniem do solowego albumu McCartney z 1970 nagrywanego w czasie rozpadu The Beatles, toteż nowemu albumowi nadano nazwę McCartney II. Na albumie dominuje muzyka elektroniczna, ale nie brakuje także typowych dla McCartneya ballad ("One Of These Days"). Poprzez ten album muzyk chciał otwarcie pokazać, że dekada Wingsów już się skończyła i teraz chce sam skupić się na działalności solowej.

Nowa, limitowana, europejska edycja wydanego przez EMI w kwietniu 1971 roku (w rodzinnej Australii przez Columbię pod tytułem "Choice Cuts", a w UK jako "Master's Apprentices" - nakładem Regal Zonophone), absolutnie doskonałego albumu kryminalnie niedocenionej (poza ojczyzną) formacji. Moim skromnym zdaniem trudno sobie wyobrazić lepsze, klasycznie rockowe, hard-progresywne granie z początku lat 70.! Nagrany w londyńskim Abbey Road (patrz: zdjęcie na tyle CD...), trzeci w dyskografii album grupy to obłędne i całkiem melodyjne granie w klimacie Cream, Wishbone Ash, Jethro Tull, Ginhouse i australijskich Tamam Shud.

Znakiem firmowym brzmienia MA było kapitalne połączenie brzmień elektrycznych i akustycznych (częstokroć grających obok siebie) gitar. Dość krótkie, aczkolwiek bardzo treściwe kompozycje. Naprawdę trudno zrozumieć dlaczego ten zespół nie stał się wielki poza Australią, gdzie miał status pół-Bogów... Wydany w grudniu tego samego, 1971 roku (ponownie powstały w Abbey Road), nieco bardziej progresywny LP "A Toast To Panama Red", bez wątpienia stał na równie wysokim poziomie, choć dla mnie 'krzesło' zawsze będzie dziełem magicznym.
Dodatkowo dwa nagrania z rzadkich stron B singli.

Cała historia zaczyna się w 1965 roku, kiedy to do grupy The Mustangs grającej w pubach w Adelajdzie dołączył, pochodzący ze Szkocji , wokalista Jim Keays. The Mustangs grali muzykę instrumentalną w stylu The Shadows. Pod wpływem Keaysa zespół zainteresował się muzyką Johna Lee Hookera, Jimmiego Reeda, Elmore’a Jamesa, Muddy Watersa. Mustangs zmienili wkrótce nazwę na MASTER’S APPRENTICES, a wraz z nią zmienił się też ich styl. Zaczęli grać ostrego, garażowego rock and rolla w stylu Pretty Things i wczesnego Them Vana Morrisona. Z czasem kompozycje gitarzysty i autora tekstów Micka Bowera stały się bardziej wyrafinowane, refleksyjne i pomimo młodego wieku nad wyraz dojrzałe. Wydany w 1967 roku debiutancki album „Master’s Apprentices” zawierał świetny freakbeat w stylu The Yardbirds i Creation. Wyróżnić w nim można takie kompozycje Bowera jak „Wars Or Hands Of Time”, „Theme For A Social Climber” czy „Tired Of Just Wandering”. Australijska prasa dostrzegła w nich duży potencjał określając zespół „największą nadzieją ostrego rock’n’rolla piątego kontynentu”. Niestety gitarzysta nie wytrzymał presji ciśnienia jakie na nim spoczęło i doznał załamania nerwowego. Za namową lekarzy odszedł od zespołu i zerwał wszelkie kontakty z show businessem. To był szok dla wszystkich. Przyszłość zespołu stanęła pod znakiem zapytania. Jim Keays postanowił jednak dalej kierować zespołem, który po kilku zmianach personalnych wydał w 1969 roku drugi album zatytułowany „Masterpiece”. Tym razem było w nim więcej popu w połączeniu z rockiem podlanym odrobiną psychodelii. Album być może trochę nierówny, na swój sposób jednak czarujący. Grupa zdobywała coraz większą popularność i uznanie krytyków. Koncerty gromadziły coraz większą publiczność. Repertuar stawał się bardziej zadziorny, wręcz hard rockowy, do którego wprowadzali elementy rocka progresywnego, o dziwo nie rezygnując przy tym z pięknych i chwytliwych melodii. Utarło się powiedzenie, że MASTER’S APPRENTICES są tym dla Australii kim The Doors byli dla Ameryki, a Rolling Stones dla Anglii. I kiedy wydawało się, że wszystko idzie w jak najlepszym kierunku, nagle nastąpił w grupie kryzys i pytanie: co dalej?

Poważnie myśleli o wyjeździe na stałe do Stanów. Stanęło jednak na tym, że wiosną 1970 roku zjawili się w Wielkiej Brytanii dając serię znakomicie przyjętych koncertów. Zaowocowało to bardzo szybko podpisanym kontraktem płytowym z wytwórnią EMI, co z kolei otworzyło im możliwość nagrania płyt w słynnych Abbey Road Studios. Miejscu magicznym, gdzie swe płyty nagrywali w tamtym czasie The Beatles i Pink Floyd. W miejscu, w którym kreowano rewolucyjne dźwięki. I pewnie magia tego studia zadziałała także podczas pracy grupy MASTER’S APPRENTICES nad ich albumami. Pierwszy z nich okazał się objawieniem i wielkim skokiem artystycznym.

Ten trzeci w dyskografii grupy album, „Choice Cuts”, to obłędne i całkiem melodyjne granie w klimacie Cream, Jethro Tull, Tamam Shud i Wishbone Ash. Łatwo wpadające w ucho melodie oparte na ciężkich gitarowych riffach Douga Forda. Płytę otwiera rewelacyjna trzyminutowa piosenka „Rio Di Camero”. Z akustycznymi, w stylu hiszpańskiego flamenco, zagrywkami gitary akustycznej i bardzo charakterystycznym, wysokim głosem wokalisty. Delikatnie zaczyna się także „Michael” – drugi utwór na płycie – przerywany ostrymi jak brzytwa cięciami gitary elektrycznej wspartej ciężką sekcją rytmiczną (Glenn Wheatley bg.; Colin Burgess dr.). Krótkie nagrania, ale ile się w nich dzieje. Groźnie jest w „Easy To Lie” z pulsującym, mocnym basem i mrocznym śpiewem Keaysa a la Ozzy Osbourne. Granie jest wyrafinowane. Nawet w tak delikatnej balladzie jak „Because I Love You” zespół nie wpada w sztampę. Ostrzejsze motywy wykonywane są ze swobodą, finezją i wielkim wyczuciem stylistyki rockowej. Na tej płycie nie ma nudy. I nie ma banałów! Dostrzegła to brytyjska prasa muzyczna, która wystawiła płycie rewelacyjne recenzje. Dodam jeszcze, że gustowną okładkę z eleganckim, wyściełanym skórą antycznym krzesłem i tajemniczą „bezcielesną” ręką trzymającą zapalonego papierosa zaprojektowała słynna firma Hipgnosis. Ta sama, która projektowała okładki dla Pink Floyd!

W Australii płyta „Choice Cuts” odniosła olbrzymi sukces, osiągając 11 pozycję na liście najlepiej sprzedających się albumów roku 1970, zaś single z utworami „Turn Up Your Radio” i „Because I Love You” zajęły odpowiednio 7 i 12 miejsce na tamtejszej liście „Top 20”.

With Choice Cuts a progressive and psychedelic sound begins to surface for The Masters.
A note: There may be some confusion about this album with European readers. Choice Cuts was released in Europe as 'The Masters Apprentices', sometimes with a heavily cropped version of the Hipgnosis designed cover. It is a totally different album to the Astor release under the name 'The Masters Apprentices' from 1967.

Choice Cuts represents a number of firsts for the Masters Apprentices: the first album the group has recorded where the intention was to go into a studio and record a complete album (the others being collections of work over a few years amalgamated into albums); the first of two albums recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios; and the first to feature the Masters line-up that would be considered the 'classic line-up' - Jim Keays, Doug Ford, Glenn Wheatley & Colin Burgess.

With the new line-up and the production guidance of Jeff Jarratt (an engineer on a number of The Beatles recordings and Pink Floyd's 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn') the Masters recorded an album that was influenced by much of the new music they were exposed to while in the UK. These influences included King Crimson, Hendrix and Free from the heavier end of the music spectrum, and Donovan and Van Morrison from the acoustic end.

Choice Cuts is by no means a true progressive album, however it does step away from the beat sound of the past and migrate into progressive areas. "Michael" and "Easy To Lie" are a couple of tracks with a progressive edge. Both make use of some smouldering guitar from Doug Ford that reminds me of Uriah Heep's guitar sound. These are supplemented by the somewhat psychedelic "Our Friend Owsley Stanley III" (a direct reference to the LSD culture of the period), the tribute to the slain Martin Luther King with "Death Of A King", and "Song For A Lost Gypsy".

The hits from the Choice Cuts album are the ballad "Because I Love You" and the Latin- influenced "Rio De Camero". "Because I Love You" features Jeff Jarratt playing piano of the legendary white grand piano belonging to Paul McCartney, and has become an Australian classic over the years. "Rio De Camero" was written at the last minute to give the album another few of minutes playing time, however it did not become a hit until 1974 when it was released as a single to support the Masters "Best Of" album 'Now That It's Over'.

Overall Choice Cuts presents this incarnation of the Masters Apprentices as a competent and cohesive playing unit. It is an important album that showed that Australian artists could venture overseas, learn from their experiences, and translate that into music with a fair level of success.

While not rating high as a progressive album, the Dinosaur is giving Choice Cuts four stars. Why? Because of the influence Choice Cuts had on those artists that followed by giving belief that great albums could be made by Australian artists. This included the next Masters album, an outright progressive album in the form of 'A Toast To Panama Red'.

Australia's THE MASTERS APPRENTICES won a free boat trip in late 1969 to England and spent a few months free from touring duties and any pressures of releasing the second album as all the material was recorded and ready for release. This gave the band the opportunity to refresh their creative mojo and given that London was ground central for the burgeoning prog and hard rock scenes back around 1970, these Aussies became smitten with the wealth of musical expressions that London offered and spent their time in the UK advancing their art form beyond the cheesy playing catch up garage rock / pop of their first two albums. The results amounted to a massive leap in creativity which finally found the band latching onto its own style and place in the greater music scene.
Totally impressed with the superior recording studios and music scene in general, the band ended up staying in London and soaked in the sounds of everyone from King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix and Small Faces to the psychedelic folk sounds of Donovan and Free. With an arsenal of fresh tracks to work with, the band landed in Abbey Road studios and recorded, mixed and mastered the newest album in only a month and then CHOICE CUTS (released simply as "Masters Apprentices" in the UK) came out in 1971, just a year after the anachronistic predecessor "Masterpiece." Sounding primarily like a 70s boogie rock style of hard rock, the band still retained a whiff of their earlier psychedelic leanings as well as a mix of folk based songs such as the single "Because I Love You," which made use of the acoustic guitar in the style of Led Zeppelin. While the band was aiming to strike it big in the UK, the single only charted in its native Australia.

The album opens with the Latin flavored shuffle groove of "Rio de Camero" and then followed by the acoustic ballad "Michael" which showcases THE MASTERS APPRENTICES' continuation of a variety of styles that range from heavy to soft however this time around the tracks flow together smoothly and the album as a whole feels cohesive. "Easy To Lie" and "Catty" showcase the band's boogie shuffle abilities with heavy rockin' guitar riffs and nice leads. Jim Keays vocal style had improved remarkably since the last album and on this album sounded something like a mix of Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Free's Paul Rodgers. Likewise some of the grooves were right out of the Free playbook as well. In fact the band had crafted an interesting sum of influences that went into a style of their own making. Overall the tracks came out extremely melodic with the instrumental interplay lights years beyond the album of a mere year prior.

"Death Of A King" is a tribute to the great Martin Luther King Jr. and the track sounds like an usual mix of the Groundhogs and Zeppelin's acoustic side with perhaps a touch of Van Morrison. "Song For A Lost Gypsy" goes for a heavy blues rock and funk style with a contrasting falsetto vocal performance. "I'm Your Satisfier" is a fun little boogie number that rock the jew's harp and all! "Song For Joey - Part II," wait! Where was part one?!! It's nothing more than an acoustic outro that ends the album. Despite all the rave reviews from the critics the band really didn't make much of a splash with CHOICE CUTS most likely due to the glut of fresh prog and harder rock clogging the record stores in 1971 London. Whatever the case the album remained an obscurity until collectors rediscovered it in the 1980s and it became an underground favorite.

It's really hard to believe that this is the same band that released the outdated "Masterpiece" just one years prior. CHOICE CUTS may not have been the most original sounding album on the scene during 1971 but it did stand out in a few ways. First of all the percussion was more dynamic and varied than most hard rock album as it utilized Latin rhythm styles and likewise the diversity of guitar licks and leads made this a more varied album than the typical blues based hard rock band of the early 70s. While not exactly prog, the influences did creep in with tones and textures and the desire to make the chord progressions a bit more spiced up than usual. Basically a folk-tinged heavy psych album, CHOICE CUTS delivered the goods where previous endeavors had failed. Against all odds, THE MASTERS APPRENTICES had come of age but unfortunately that wasn't good enough for any kind of breakthrough success. The band would push on for one more album and then call it quits. This is probably their crowning achievement.

The Mustangs grali muzykę instrumentalną w stylu The Shadows. Pod wpływem Keaysa zespół zainteresował się muzyką Johna Lee Hookera, Jimmiego Reeda, Elmore’a Jamesa, Muddy Watersa. Mustangs zmienili wkrótce nazwę na MASTER’S APPRENTICES, a wraz z nią zmienił się też ich styl. Zaczęli grać ostrego, garażowego rock and rolla w stylu Pretty Things i wczesnego Them Vana Morrisona. Z czasem kompozycje gitarzysty i autora tekstów Micka Bowera stały się bardziej wyrafinowane, refleksyjne i pomimo młodego wieku nad wyraz dojrzałe. Wydany w 1967 roku debiutancki album „Master’s Apprentices” zawierał świetny freakbeat w stylu The Yardbirds i Creation. Wyróżnić w nim można takie kompozycje Bowera jak „Wars Or Hands Of Time”, „Theme For A Social Climber” czy „Tired Of Just Wandering”. Australijska prasa dostrzegła w nich duży potencjał określając zespół „największą nadzieją ostrego rock’n’rolla piątego kontynentu”. Niestety gitarzysta nie wytrzymał presji ciśnienia jakie na nim spoczęło i doznał załamania nerwowego. Za namową lekarzy odszedł od zespołu i zerwał wszelkie kontakty z show businessem. To był szok dla wszystkich. Przyszłość zespołu stanęła pod znakiem zapytania. Jim Keays postanowił jednak dalej kierować zespołem, który po kilku zmianach personalnych wydał w 1969 roku drugi album zatytułowany „Masterpiece”. Tym razem było w nim więcej popu w połączeniu z rockiem podlanym odrobiną psychodelii. Album być może trochę nierówny, na swój sposób jednak czarujący. Grupa zdobywała coraz większą popularność i uznanie krytyków. Koncerty gromadziły coraz większą publiczność. Repertuar stawał się bardziej zadziorny, wręcz hard rockowy, do którego wprowadzali elementy rocka progresywnego, o dziwo nie rezygnując przy tym z pięknych i chwytliwych melodii. Utarło się powiedzenie, że MASTER’S APPRENTICES są tym dla Australii kim The Doors byli dla Ameryki, a Rolling Stones dla Anglii. I kiedy wydawało się, że wszystko idzie w jak najlepszym kierunku, nagle nastąpił w grupie kryzys i pytanie: co dalej?

Poważnie myśleli o wyjeździe na stałe do Stanów. Stanęło jednak na tym, że wiosną 1970 roku zjawili się w Wielkiej Brytanii dając serię znakomicie przyjętych koncertów. Zaowocowało to bardzo szybko podpisanym kontraktem płytowym z wytwórnią EMI, co z kolei otworzyło im możliwość nagrania płyt w słynnych Abbey Road Studios. Miejscu magicznym, gdzie swe płyty nagrywali w tamtym czasie The Beatles i Pink Floyd. W miejscu, w którym kreowano rewolucyjne dźwięki. I pewnie magia tego studia zadziałała także podczas pracy grupy MASTER’S APPRENTICES nad ich albumami. Pierwszy z nich okazał się objawieniem i wielkim skokiem artystycznym.

Ten trzeci w dyskografii grupy album, „Choice Cuts”, to obłędne i całkiem melodyjne granie w klimacie Cream, Jethro Tull, Tamam Shud i Wishbone Ash. Łatwo wpadające w ucho melodie oparte na ciężkich gitarowych riffach Douga Forda. Płytę otwiera rewelacyjna trzyminutowa piosenka „Rio Di Camero”. Z akustycznymi, w stylu hiszpańskiego flamenco, zagrywkami gitary akustycznej i bardzo charakterystycznym, wysokim głosem wokalisty. Delikatnie zaczyna się także „Michael” – drugi utwór na płycie – przerywany ostrymi jak brzytwa cięciami gitary elektrycznej wspartej ciężką sekcją rytmiczną (Glenn Wheatley bg.; Colin Burgess dr.). Krótkie nagrania, ale ile się w nich dzieje. Groźnie jest w „Easy To Lie” z pulsującym, mocnym basem i mrocznym śpiewem Keaysa a la Ozzy Osbourne. Granie jest wyrafinowane. Nawet w tak delikatnej balladzie jak „Because I Love You” zespół nie wpada w sztampę. Ostrzejsze motywy wykonywane są ze swobodą, finezją i wielkim wyczuciem stylistyki rockowej. Na tej płycie nie ma nudy. I nie ma banałów! Dostrzegła to brytyjska prasa muzyczna, która wystawiła płycie rewelacyjne recenzje. Dodam jeszcze, że gustowną okładkę z eleganckim, wyściełanym skórą antycznym krzesłem i tajemniczą „bezcielesną” ręką trzymającą zapalonego papierosa zaprojektowała słynna firma Hipgnosis. Ta sama, która projektowała okładki dla Pink Floyd!

W Australii płyta „Choice Cuts” odniosła olbrzymi sukces, osiągając 11 pozycję na liście najlepiej sprzedających się albumów roku 1970, zaś single z utworami „Turn Up Your Radio” i „Because I Love You” zajęły odpowiednio 7 i 12 miejsce na tamtejszej liście „Top 20”.

With Choice Cuts a progressive and psychedelic sound begins to surface for The Masters.
A note: There may be some confusion about this album with European readers. Choice Cuts was released in Europe as 'The Masters Apprentices', sometimes with a heavily cropped version of the Hipgnosis designed cover. It is a totally different album to the Astor release under the name 'The Masters Apprentices' from 1967.

Choice Cuts represents a number of firsts for the Masters Apprentices: the first album the group has recorded where the intention was to go into a studio and record a complete album (the others being collections of work over a few years amalgamated into albums); the first of two albums recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios; and the first to feature the Masters line-up that would be considered the 'classic line-up' - Jim Keays, Doug Ford, Glenn Wheatley & Colin Burgess.

With the new line-up and the production guidance of Jeff Jarratt (an engineer on a number of The Beatles recordings and Pink Floyd's 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn') the Masters recorded an album that was influenced by much of the new music they were exposed to while in the UK. These influences included King Crimson, Hendrix and Free from the heavier end of the music spectrum, and Donovan and Van Morrison from the acoustic end.

Choice Cuts is by no means a true progressive album, however it does step away from the beat sound of the past and migrate into progressive areas. "Michael" and "Easy To Lie" are a couple of tracks with a progressive edge. Both make use of some smouldering guitar from Doug Ford that reminds me of Uriah Heep's guitar sound. These are supplemented by the somewhat psychedelic "Our Friend Owsley Stanley III" (a direct reference to the LSD culture of the period), the tribute to the slain Martin Luther King with "Death Of A King", and "Song For A Lost Gypsy".

The hits from the Choice Cuts album are the ballad "Because I Love You" and the Latin- influenced "Rio De Camero". "Because I Love You" features Jeff Jarratt playing piano of the legendary white grand piano belonging to Paul McCartney, and has become an Australian classic over the years. "Rio De Camero" was written at the last minute to give the album another few of minutes playing time, however it did not become a hit until 1974 when it was released as a single to support the Masters "Best Of" album 'Now That It's Over'.

Overall Choice Cuts presents this incarnation of the Masters Apprentices as a competent and cohesive playing unit. It is an important album that showed that Australian artists could venture overseas, learn from their experiences, and translate that into music with a fair level of success.

While not rating high as a progressive album, the Dinosaur is giving Choice Cuts four stars. Why? Because of the influence Choice Cuts had on those artists that followed by giving belief that great albums could be made by Australian artists. This included the next Masters album, an outright progressive album in the form of 'A Toast To Panama Red'.

Australia's THE MASTERS APPRENTICES won a free boat trip in late 1969 to England and spent a few months free from touring duties and any pressures of releasing the second album as all the material was recorded and ready for release. This gave the band the opportunity to refresh their creative mojo and given that London was ground central for the burgeoning prog and hard rock scenes back around 1970, these Aussies became smitten with the wealth of musical expressions that London offered and spent their time in the UK advancing their art form beyond the cheesy playing catch up garage rock / pop of their first two albums. The results amounted to a massive leap in creativity which finally found the band latching onto its own style and place in the greater music scene.
Totally impressed with the superior recording studios and music scene in general, the band ended up staying in London and soaked in the sounds of everyone from King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix and Small Faces to the psychedelic folk sounds of Donovan and Free. With an arsenal of fresh tracks to work with, the band landed in Abbey Road studios and recorded, mixed and mastered the newest album in only a month and then CHOICE CUTS (released simply as "Masters Apprentices" in the UK) came out in 1971, just a year after the anachronistic predecessor "Masterpiece." Sounding primarily like a 70s boogie rock style of hard rock, the band still retained a whiff of their earlier psychedelic leanings as well as a mix of folk based songs such as the single "Because I Love You," which made use of the acoustic guitar in the style of Led Zeppelin. While the band was aiming to strike it big in the UK, the single only charted in its native Australia.

The album opens with the Latin flavored shuffle groove of "Rio de Camero" and then followed by the acoustic ballad "Michael" which showcases THE MASTERS APPRENTICES' continuation of a variety of styles that range from heavy to soft however this time around the tracks flow together smoothly and the album as a whole feels cohesive. "Easy To Lie" and "Catty" showcase the band's boogie shuffle abilities with heavy rockin' guitar riffs and nice leads. Jim Keays vocal style had improved remarkably since the last album and on this album sounded something like a mix of Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Free's Paul Rodgers. Likewise some of the grooves were right out of the Free playbook as well. In fact the band had crafted an interesting sum of influences that went into a style of their own making. Overall the tracks came out extremely melodic with the instrumental interplay lights years beyond the album of a mere year prior.

"Death Of A King" is a tribute to the great Martin Luther King Jr. and the track sounds like an usual mix of the Groundhogs and Zeppelin's acoustic side with perhaps a touch of Van Morrison. "Song For A Lost Gypsy" goes for a heavy blues rock and funk style with a contrasting falsetto vocal performance. "I'm Your Satisfier" is a fun little boogie number that rock the jew's harp and all! "Song For Joey - Part II," wait! Where was part one?!! It's nothing more than an acoustic outro that ends the album. Despite all the rave reviews from the critics the band really didn't make much of a splash with CHOICE CUTS most likely due to the glut of fresh prog and harder rock clogging the record stores in 1971 London. Whatever the case the album remained an obscurity until collectors rediscovered it in the 1980s and it became an underground favorite.

It's really hard to believe that this is the same band that released the outdated "Masterpiece" just one years prior. CHOICE CUTS may not have been the most original sounding album on the scene during 1971 but it did stand out in a few ways. First of all the percussion was more dynamic and varied than most hard rock album as it utilized Latin rhythm styles and likewise the diversity of guitar licks and leads made this a more varied album than the typical blues based hard rock band of the early 70s. While not exactly prog, the influences did creep in with tones and textures and the desire to make the chord progressions a bit more spiced up than usual. Basically a folk-tinged heavy psych album, CHOICE CUTS delivered the goods where previous endeavors had failed. Against all odds, THE MASTERS APPRENTICES had come of age but unfortunately that wasn't good enough for any kind of breakthrough success. The band would push on for one more album and then call it quits. This is probably their crowning achievement.

Głupie to straszliwie, ale po The Flesh Prevails sięgnąłem tylko po to, żeby się upewnić w przypuszczeniach, że jest do dupy. Czemu? No cóż, bo tak… Zdroworozsądkowego wytłumaczenia na to nie mam, a zmyślać mi się akurat nie chce. Niezależnie jednak od motywów, dobrze się stało, bo drugi album Fallujah okazał się dla mnie największym, przebijającym wszystkie poprzednie, pozytywnym zaskoczeniem tego roku. Naturalnie do gleby mnie nie sprowadził, bo do ideału mu sporo brakuje, ale dość powiedzieć, że wyraźnie wybija się ponad setki innych płyt z nowoczesnym technicznym death metalem, w tym także debiutancki „The Harvest Wombs”.

To, co przesądziło o — że tak trochę nadużyję — wyjątkowości albumu, to korekta wcześniejszego stylu. Amerykanie zdecydowanie spuścili z tonu (choć sam początek, a zwłaszcza „Carved From Stone”, może sugerować coś zupełnie innego), skupili się natomiast na nastroju muzyki i jej bardzo progresywnej otoczce. Do zmiękczaczy można zaliczyć tu m.in. elektroniczne plamy, ambientowe wtręty oraz damskie wokale. I jak zwykle nie pochwalam takich zabiegów, to w przypadku Fallujah naprawdę zdały egzamin, bo dzięki nim The Flesh Prevails jest materiałem niejednoznacznym, niejednorodnym, w wielu fragmentach niebanalnym, bardziej rozbudowanym, mocniej skupiającym uwagę i po prostu ciekawym.

Po pierwszych udanych ciosach zespół często i gęsto sięga po klimaty kojarzone raczej z twórczością Vai’a czy Satrianiego aniżeli death metalem w jakiejkolwiek odmianie. Brutalność staje się tylko dodatkiem (choć ciągle istotnym – bez niej zaraz pojawiłaby się nuda) do wielopoziomowych pasaży, a na pierwszy plan wysuwa się — uzyskiwana wieloma środkami — atmosfera. Innymi słowy: mniej krzyczą, więcej dumają. Obyło się jednak bez naciąganego eklektyzmu i tanich melodyjek. Także bez popadania w nie wiadomo jak popieprzone technicznie motywy, bo krążek na pewno jest mniej skomplikowany niż stać na to muzyków, a przez to słucha i zapamiętuje się go łatwiej, mimo iż wymaga skupienia.

W związku z powyższym zwolenników czystej napierdalanki zawartość The Flesh Prevails raczej nie zadowoli, a samo brzmienie może doprowadzić do rozpaczy. Sam zresztą nie jestem fanem tak podanego dźwięku. Fallujah nagrywali z przesławnym w niektórych kręgach Zackiem Ohrenem, ale zbyt dobrze, moim zdaniem, na tym nie wyszli. Kapuję, że chodziło im o maksymalną selektywność, ale przesadzili ze sterylnością, przez co płyta momentami brzmi dziwnie. Szczególnie kiepsko wypadają gary, bo w szybszych momentach cały generowany przez nie dźwięk zamienia się w płaskie „trytrytrytry”. No cóż, w tym elemencie się nie popisali, ale trzeba się jakoś do tego przyzwyczaić. Choć może i nie trzeba, ale warto, bo ten materiał na to zasługuje.

Gorąco polecam, jeden z najlepszych albumów power metalowych lat 80!


This rarity is a true gem of the NWOBHM treasure. The two most outstanding elements are the vocals and the guitars. Russ North is without any doubt one of the best metal singers in the world. Few can combine the power, class, range, technicality, and falsetto screams he shows off only in the first song. Coming to that, he has a voice of his own. Charismatic, strong, inspired and emotional. Yes this singer rocks. He joined Cloven Hoof on the Dominator album but A Sultan’s Ransom feature even finer works of his. This guy was by the way in the final round when Iron Maiden selected a new vocalist.

The guitarist Andy Wood moves the listener to the seventh heaven with his blazing leads, glimmering solos and blasting riffs. It’s such a pleasure listening to the melodic yet so powerful guitars played by competent hands switching between riff attacks, solo crescendos and calmer passages faster and easier than oneself put butter on the breakfast bread. Actually, the guitar work is unparalleled by most bands of the time. It’s like Andy LaRocque in King Diamond’s band during their three best albums, squared. Drumming feels just as human-made as it shall do. Not the overly exact beats of a machine, but the harder, yet more fluid-like ones you only hear from a really skilled drummer. They just flow on, and on, and on… One doesn’t hear any echoes; one cannot but appreciate the swift and soft switching between tempos that happens quite often.

The music is a dynamic speed-attack by this now ten years old band, who now really proves they are masters of the genre. There isn’t one single tune not giving one a sudden, strong and vital urge to head bang. Astral Rider is an instant hit, and so are all the other songs. The only weak spot, Notre Dame, is weak only in sense that it is weaker than the other songs on this album. I don’t want to give the impression that it in is a weak song; that would be misleading. In fact, it slays most Iron Maiden and Judas Priest songs without any problems. Forgotten Heroes and especially Mad, Mad World are extremely catchy, with the kind of choruses you’ll find yourself singing on the street. But even these songs, and the magnificent Astral Rider, speedy, D.V.R, Accept-tasting Jekyll & Hyde, they are all nothing compared to the two real masterpieces, the two epic closing songs. Highlander and Mistress of the Forest are perhaps the two most expressive NWOBHM ever recorded. If not, they are definitely among the top ones.
