Vangelis (gr. Βαγγέλης), właśc. Ewangelos Odiseas Papatanasiu (gr. Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου; ur. 29 marca 1943 w Agrii koło Wolos, zm. 17 maja 2022 w Paryżu - grecki kompozytor muzyki elektronicznej i filmowej. Vangelis urodził się 29 marca 1943 roku w Agrii koło Wolos, w Grecji. Edukację muzyczną rozpoczął w wieku 4 lat, a już w wieku 6 lat miał swój pierwszy publiczny występ, na którym prezentował własne kompozycje. Vangelis był w dużej części samoukiem - odmawiał pobierania lekcji gry na pianinie, a w ciągu swojej kariery nie zdobył formalnej wiedzy na temat notacji muzycznej. Uczył się muzyki poważnej, malarstwa i reżyserii filmowej na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Atenach. Zyskał światową sławę dzięki swoim wyjątkowym, często epickim kompozycjom, które łączyły elementy muzyki elektronicznej, symfonicznej i rockowej. Rumkicks to koreański zespół punkrockowy z Seulu założony w 2018 roku przez Jeong Yeawon i basistkę Choi Seun. Nazwa Rumkicks została wybrana jako coś neutralnego, co nie sugeruje płci członków zespołu. Yeawon powiedziała, że nie ma ona głębszego znaczenia, a rumu wcale szczególnie nie lubi. Dodała, że inspirowała się nieco australijskim zespołem The Rumjacks. Zespół znany jest ze swojego zadziornego wyglądu i szczerych, pełnych frustracji tekstów poruszających kwestie społeczne i zdrowie psychiczne. Rumkicks zwróciły na siebie uwagę na całym świecie. Mają na koncie intensywne trasy koncertowe, m.in. w Wielkiej Brytanii, USA, Europie, Chinach i Japonii. Zostały ujęte w składzie Rebellion Festival w latach 2022, 2023 i 2024. Skalariak to zespół muzyczny założony w 1994 w Pampelunie (Nawarra, Hiszpania) przez Juantxo Skalari oraz Peio Skalari. Zespół gra muzykę ska od prawdziwego ska z lat 60. do szybkiego ska z lat 90. mieszając je z reggae oraz punkiem. W czerwcu 1997 nagrali swój pierwszy album „Skalariak”. Utwór „Jaia” z tej płyty był jedną z najczęściej granych piosenek podczas święta San Fermin. Był również uważany za jeden z najlepszych utworów ska roku 1997. W 1999 zespół odbył kilka tras koncertowych po takich krajach jak Francja, Włochy, Szwajcaria, Meksyk, USA i Wenezuela. Wraz z wydaniem na jesieni 1999 kolejnego albumu „klub ska” zespół stał się jedną z najbardziej wpływowych grup sceny alternatywnej w kraju. W związku z silną promocją swojego drugiego albumu Skalariak zaczął się regularnie pojawiać w mediach – nie tylko w radiu, ale również w telewizji, jak i prasie. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI

Nowa, limitowana, europejska edycja niemal zupełnie nieznanego albumu anonimowego zespołu z Włoch, który pod koniec 1971 roku dla mikrowytwórni nagrał swój jedyny album, należący od ponad 30 lat do mojej TOP 5 włoskiego progresywnego rocka. Instrumentalna, bardzo piękna i niby-filmowa muzyka przywodząca na myśl uwielbiany przeze mnie francuski soundtrack z filmu "La Route de Salina" (czyli wczesnych Pink Floyd pomieszanych z klimatami Ennio Morricone) w połączeniu ze szczyptą Santany (zwłaszcza w zamykającym całość, 11-minutowym utworze tytułowym), z wczesnymi The Moody Blues i lirycznymi elementami King Crimson - a to za sprawą licznych fraz melotronu i gitary klasycznej. Ponadto dużo czarujących melodii na organy Hammonda, fortepian, flet (dużo!), gitarę elektryczną oraz odgłosy burzy, wojny - taaakie klimaty... Niesamowicie atmosferyczna i pełna zmiennych nastrojów (od wojennego horroru po delikatne czarujące melodie) płyta i prawdę mówiąc nie znam drugiego takiego albumu! Żaden, powtarzam, żaden fan starego włoskiego rocka progresywnego nie będzie rozczarowany! Tym bardziej, że dźwięk jest doskonały, a poprzednia wersja CD ukazała się w roku 1990...! Oryginalny winyl w świetnym stanie kosztuje 800-900 euro, a nawet w tym momencie ktoś oferuje w necie zapieczętowany (!) egzemplarz za jedyne 2000 euro!

Rzeczą, która już na pierwszy rzut oka wyróżnia Planetarium spośród innych włoskich kapel prog-rockowych, jest to, że tytuły utworów są po angielsku. A 99 procent włoskich prog-manow używało rodzimego języka (i bardzo dobrze, dodaje to tej muzyce specyficznego kolorytu). Nie wiem dlaczego ten zespół zdecydował się na takie rozwiązanie, szczególnie, że płyta jest praktycznie instrumentalna (jest tylko trochę wokaliz). Zagadek związanych z tą grupą jest dużo więcej – na przykład, kto w niej grał? Do tej pory nie jest znany skład muzyków, którzy nagrywali jedyny album tej formacji, znana jest tylko jedna osoba – A.Ferrari, jako autor wszystkich kompozycji. A może on sam nagrał całą płytę? Nie wiadomo. Wiadomo, że jest tylko jedna. Już nic pod tą nazwą się nie ukazało. A szkoda, bo „Infinity” to jest „Real master piece of italian prog-rock” jak piszą o niej niektórzy na progarchivach. Moim zdaniem nie ma w tym żadnej przesady. Jest to naprawdę przepiękna rzecz. Pierwszy raz trafiła do mnie niekompletna, już z dziesięć lat temu – kumpel dysponował taką „felerną” kopią. I od razu zrobiła na mnie piorunujące wrażenie. Chyba tylko debiut PFM walnął mnie mocniej. Szczerze żałowałem, że nie znam całości. A kiedy udało mi się wreszcie dorwać kompletne „Infnity” to prawie imprezę urządziłem, taki byłem szczęśliwy.

Mimo angielskich tytułów płyta zawiera na wskroś włoską muzykę – „The Beginning” ma w sobie coś z westernowych tematów Ennio Morricone, a trudno znaleźć bardziej włoskiego artystę. Analizując nieco na chłodno zawartość tego krążka, można się zastanawiać, czym specjalnym wyróżnia się spośród innych produkcji Italo-proga tamtego okresu. I tak jak w przypadku Locanda Della Fate, po pewnym zastanowieniu można powiedzieć, że stylistycznie tak w sumie to niczym. Są tu te wszystkie składniki włoskiego prog-rocka, jakie znajdziemy na dziesiątkach innych płyt. Ale sztuka polega na tym, że trzeba jeszcze to wszystko umiejętnie połączyć, doprawić. Tu decydują niuanse, jak w sałatce jarzynowej – składniki te same, ale każdemu wychodzi inaczej. Jak inni wykonawcy z Włoch, Planetarium nie było zbyt blisko awangardy gatunku, ale jednak zostawiło po sobie kilkadziesiąt minut pięknej muzyki – pod tym względem „Infinity” nie ma zbyt wielu równych sobie – cukierkowo ładny „Love” (ale bardziej ładny, niż cukierkowy), albo przepięknie rozwijający się „Life” – od gitary akustycznej i fletu, z nieśmiało włączającym się fortepianem, do podniosłego finału z mellotronem, okraszonym solem gitarowym w stylu Santany.

Słychać wyraźnie, że płytę podzielono na dwie części (zresztą w epoce winylowej dosyć często się to zdarzało – dwie strony płyty różniły się od siebie nieco charakterem). Pierwsza część, pierwsza strona analoga jest bardziej akustyczna, delikatniejsza, więcej tu melodii. Natomiast druga jest nieco mocniejsza, bardziej rockowa, tu już dominują utwory z instrumentami podłączonymi do prądu, pojawiają się nawet fragmenty jakby improwizowane, powiedzmy psychodeliczne. Całe „Infinity” kończy się dokładnie tak samo, jak się zaczyna - w finale utworu tytułowego, który kończy album, pojawia się ten sam temat co w „The Beginning”.

Jedna z najpiękniejszych płyt włoskiego prog-rocka.

Ponadto dużo czarujących melodii na organy Hammonda, fortepian, flet (dużo!), gitarę elektryczną oraz odgłosy burzy, wojny - taaakie klimaty... Niesamowicie atmosferyczna i pełna zmiennych nastrojów (od wojennego horroru po delikatne czarujące melodie) płyta i prawdę mówiąc nie znam drugiego takiego albumu! Żaden, powtarzam, żaden fan starego włoskiego rocka progresywnego nie będzie rozczarowany! Tym bardziej, że dźwięk jest doskonały, a poprzednia wersja CD ukazała się w roku 1990...! Oryginalny winyl w świetnym stanie kosztuje 800-900 euro, a nawet w tym momencie ktoś oferuje w necie zapieczętowany (!) egzemplarz za jedyne 2000 euro!

Rzeczą, która już na pierwszy rzut oka wyróżnia Planetarium spośród innych włoskich kapel prog-rockowych, jest to, że tytuły utworów są po angielsku. A 99 procent włoskich prog-manow używało rodzimego języka (i bardzo dobrze, dodaje to tej muzyce specyficznego kolorytu). Nie wiem dlaczego ten zespół zdecydował się na takie rozwiązanie, szczególnie, że płyta jest praktycznie instrumentalna (jest tylko trochę wokaliz). Zagadek związanych z tą grupą jest dużo więcej – na przykład, kto w niej grał? Do tej pory nie jest znany skład muzyków, którzy nagrywali jedyny album tej formacji, znana jest tylko jedna osoba – A.Ferrari, jako autor wszystkich kompozycji. A może on sam nagrał całą płytę? Nie wiadomo. Wiadomo, że jest tylko jedna. Już nic pod tą nazwą się nie ukazało. A szkoda, bo „Infinity” to jest „Real master piece of italian prog-rock” jak piszą o niej niektórzy na progarchivach. Moim zdaniem nie ma w tym żadnej przesady. Jest to naprawdę przepiękna rzecz. Pierwszy raz trafiła do mnie niekompletna, już z dziesięć lat temu – kumpel dysponował taką „felerną” kopią. I od razu zrobiła na mnie piorunujące wrażenie. Chyba tylko debiut PFM walnął mnie mocniej. Szczerze żałowałem, że nie znam całości. A kiedy udało mi się wreszcie dorwać kompletne „Infnity” to prawie imprezę urządziłem, taki byłem szczęśliwy.

Mimo angielskich tytułów płyta zawiera na wskroś włoską muzykę – „The Beginning” ma w sobie coś z westernowych tematów Ennio Morricone, a trudno znaleźć bardziej włoskiego artystę. Analizując nieco na chłodno zawartość tego krążka, można się zastanawiać, czym specjalnym wyróżnia się spośród innych produkcji Italo-proga tamtego okresu. I tak jak w przypadku Locanda Della Fate, po pewnym zastanowieniu można powiedzieć, że stylistycznie tak w sumie to niczym. Są tu te wszystkie składniki włoskiego prog-rocka, jakie znajdziemy na dziesiątkach innych płyt. Ale sztuka polega na tym, że trzeba jeszcze to wszystko umiejętnie połączyć, doprawić. Tu decydują niuanse, jak w sałatce jarzynowej – składniki te same, ale każdemu wychodzi inaczej. Jak inni wykonawcy z Włoch, Planetarium nie było zbyt blisko awangardy gatunku, ale jednak zostawiło po sobie kilkadziesiąt minut pięknej muzyki – pod tym względem „Infinity” nie ma zbyt wielu równych sobie – cukierkowo ładny „Love” (ale bardziej ładny, niż cukierkowy), albo przepięknie rozwijający się „Life” – od gitary akustycznej i fletu, z nieśmiało włączającym się fortepianem, do podniosłego finału z mellotronem, okraszonym solem gitarowym w stylu Santany.

Słychać wyraźnie, że płytę podzielono na dwie części (zresztą w epoce winylowej dosyć często się to zdarzało – dwie strony płyty różniły się od siebie nieco charakterem). Pierwsza część, pierwsza strona analoga jest bardziej akustyczna, delikatniejsza, więcej tu melodii. Natomiast druga jest nieco mocniejsza, bardziej rockowa, tu już dominują utwory z instrumentami podłączonymi do prądu, pojawiają się nawet fragmenty jakby improwizowane, powiedzmy psychodeliczne. Całe „Infinity” kończy się dokładnie tak samo, jak się zaczyna - w finale utworu tytułowego, który kończy album, pojawia się ten sam temat co w „The Beginning”.

Jedna z najpiękniejszych płyt włoskiego prog-rocka.

This is Rotten Sound's true beginning. It captures their signature grind - the most abrasive, catchy form of it that'll be perfected on the next couple of albums. The production's very fitting, putting a sharp distortion on the guitars so the riffs come out as ample and vicious. With stampeding blast beats and Niinimaa's versatile vocal performance, it's downright assaulting. I love the crushing sound like an intense rush. With the mastering it all comes out clearer and thus makes things easier to decipher. Memorability skyrockets as a result, and this album won't be one to forget. It's like Bolt Thrower's Realm Of Chaos where you know the band has something to build off of.

There's thrash, punk, death and grind rolled into this beast. The clarity separates the instruments well but doesn't reach the polish of Murderworks or Exit. That guitar distortion helps the riffs feel alive with the unrestricted aggression and tenacity surging. It's a saw-like tone that'll hit with various tempos and grooviness. Bass support is more essential to the guitars, often taking lead to splash with some sludgy lines. The combination is addictive and keeps me interested since there's always something catching my attention. The band isn't running through the motions with sloppy playing or redundancy - it's all tense and inventive. Most addicting is when the band goes into a riff break, usually slowing down the blaring speed for a headbanging rhythm.

Kai Hahto's got some tasteful drumming: roundabout, charged, and lots of footwork. The best is when he matches the riffs instead of blasting. It's like having consecutive grooves before Niinimaa's thick growls and shredded screams pour out. It's a relentless approach that doesn't even tire me out. It may sound exhausting but there are plenty of hooks and the appeal is in the collective. From the slick bass drops to the diligent drumming, the album is the antidote for slowness. The title track's got all of the above plus some of those plunging riff breaks that the band uses competently.

The band only upped their game with the next two albums, both of which are standouts of the genre. Drain just starts off the formula by getting it on the right track. On its own I still like it a lot, but it could have been taken further. Grind like this doesn't come easy, and many bands like this end up sounding the same and are held to a lesser quality. If there's any one band to stick with for this kind of music, then Rotten Sound is the one.

Mekong Delta has to be simultaneously both one of the most underrated bands ever and one of the most overrated bands ever. From one point of observation they might be a boring, badly produced band with sucky vocals and strange songs. From another point of view they have some of the best early progressive thrash songwriting, strangely catchy ideas and riffs, and truly strange and ominous soundscapes. The latter opinion, of course, is the correct one.

The first associations the band's name brings to mind are the Vietnam War, Far East and humid warmth. The music on their albums, however, is the total opposite: it's eerie atmosphere has a cold and merciless quality, the production is harsh and somehow oddly balanced, and the ease of living in a tropical paradise is not there. It still maintains its own logic, and does not collapse into chaotic war, despite the layered complexity and harsh sound.

The usual career progression of those few thrash bands that dabble with the progressive end of their genre seems to go from aggression to something a bit mellower but much more complex, and the ambition in the compositions increases with the skill level of the musicians. So does the average song length, with the number of various parts increasing and the essential thrashiness decreasing. Mekong Delta hasn't quite gone the usual route, but their infatuation with classical music, especially that written by Modest Mussorgsky, has perhaps sidetracked them a bit; Pictures at an Exhibition can be considered a misstep, or, rather, overshooting of the theme.

On The Principle of Doubt the classical parts are still confined to a single track, "El Colibri", and the only other oddity is the theme from Twilight Zone. The follow-up to this album, Dances of Death (And Other Walking Shadows), started Mekong Delta's Mussorgsky craze, but some borrowed parts can be found already on the earlier two albums. "Twilight Zone" has the most prominent orchestral parts on the album, and as the band was later to show, their way of combining the orchestra's sound with that of a progressive thrash band works well. Both have their personal spaces, and a workable ratio of ingredients is found by mostly avoiding overstepping the borders between the two. They stay in their comfort zones, and the overlap is kept to a minimum.

What does the music sound like, then? Well, it's progressive thrash, blended with some symphonic instrumentation, timpanis and horns being the easiest to notice. The overall production does a fine work of hiding the talent, especially the complex twin guitar parts. Actually, their character could easily be changed, with different production, to immense displays of musicianship, but with the clunky soundscape, they simply are there: no matter how finely tuned and balanced the co-operation of the two guitars is, they simply sound like they were just doing what they were supposed to be doing. In other words, instead of dazzling with technicality and sounding impossibly complicated and difficult, the guitars serve the greater good, the songs, and while their intertwining beauty is there to be found easily if wished, they do not disturb the main agenda, the ten songs on the album. And that, people, is what true progression should be in its deepest essence. Not wankery, not song durations in excess of a quarter of an hour, and definitely not technicality for technicality's sake. Every song on The Principle of Doubt works like a charm, and no part of it seems like ego-tripping by a loony guitar god.

The rest of the band has a character, too. The drumming is excellent, but not overdone, and has a lot of interesting parts in it, especially considering the year of the album's release. The basswork is on par with the progressive metal of the era, in other words way beyond that of more classical heavy metal acts of the late 80s.

The vocals of Keil have an atmosphere of an instant opinion-splitter. His style is rather difficult to describe, but mostly he resorts to a kind of melodic wailing and lower grunty shout. His style is easy to dislike, but even if it's an aquired taste, the trouble of aquiring it pays itself back many times over once the listener finally gains access to the inner workings of the album. Because, obviously, this is not an easily accessible piece of art: the coarse production is the first hurdle to overcome, and the progressively alien songwriting with its eccentric tones and atmospheres full of feelings such as despair, aggression and plain strangeness does not help the first-timer to get an idea of the brilliance within. This album does not want to be liked.

The drawbacks are mostly products of time. The production would surely be different today, just to better display some of the genius in here. Perhaps the creative process would be different and more constrained in 2008, but two decades ago the idea of making a metal version of an argentinian guitarist's song did not sound cheesy at all. Because it simply works in this way. And in the late 80s, this was ruthlessly progressive and even avant-garde.

Get this album. It can be argued that this is the pinnacle of Mekong Delta's career. The songwriting has improved even further from the days of Mekong Delta and Music of Erich Zann, and Dances of Death (And Other Walking Shadows), in its own brilliance, already sounds much more polished, and perhaps gave in to the demands of modern days. Just remember, understanding this piece of work takes effort. Don't give up, it's worth it.
