Focus to holenderska progresywna grupa rockowa istniejąca w latach 1968-1978. Reaktywowana w 2002 roku. Formacja nagrywała głównie muzykę instrumentalną, charakteryzującą się bogatym brzmieniem opartym na dźwiękach instrumentów klawiszowych, pasażach fletu, gitarowych riffach i skomplikowanych rytmach. W jej muzyce wyraźnie daje się zauważyć wpływy muzyki klasycznej, która stanowi podstawę stylu zespołu, oraz elementy jazzu. ..::OPIS::.. Originally released in 1988 and out-of-print for decades, Martha Splatterhead's Maddest Stories Ever Told is the third full-length album from Seattle's sultans of splatter rock! Many bands influenced by their ferocious style of music have waxed and waned throughout history but The Accused's music has stood the test of time and proves them to be one of the most ripping bands to ever shred the earth! Nowerdays, a time when thrash and crossover is making a comeback and legions of new bands get high rated reviews and are compared to D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies and S.O.D, Seattle’s own The Accused are often looked over. This is unfortunate and unjustified. I always wondered why. Maybe because The Accused sounds extremely European for a bunch of American kids? Nah, that wouldn’t be it. Metallica were hailed for their NWOBHM influences back in the day. The vocals then? Could be it. On this album Blaine Cook in essence is more death metal than 95% of the ‘true’ death metal vocalists. He is filthier than filthy and ever since I heard this boy scream, John Tardy turned bland for me. If more death metal bands would have had vocalists like this, I would have liked them a lot more. Grunting lower than low is just dull. Blaine Cook is the filthiest vocalist in eighties crossover and he can do more than just grunt or scream. Just listen to the title track and don’t deny he can even resemble Oderus Urungus (GWAR) if he wants to. (the other way around can also be true obviously) Ofcourse even for a lot of crossover fans with their heart mostly focussed on metal, this band could be too punk, too hardcore. Covering GBH is a good thing in my opinion and this version of "Sick Boy" sounds very energetic and dirty. Of course a song like “Lights Out” is sheer punk. Nothing thrash or crossover about it. But then again, there are so many thrashing songs to be found, it would easily make up for it. It’s also not because of their sense of humour. Most people really like that aspect about SOD or Wehrmacht and even Municipal Waste these days, so why not The Accused. “I'd Love to Change the World” not only is funny, it’s dynamic and just briliant as well. “The Hearse” is funny each time I hear it. Well, I think a lot of people often simply 'forget' to mention The Accused. As if the band doesn’t have a place in heavy metal’s collective memory. I myself am willing to do something about that. I don’t know how yet but I’ll start by writing this review and sharing it with all of you. The Accused were a very good crossover band with their focus slightly more on punk than thrash during the eighties and on this album they surpased themselves. This is their most varied album but also qualitatively speaking their most consistent one. There are simply no bad songs and the balance between thrashing songs, punk songs and some jokes is close to perfection. Just listen to the riffs, vocals and intensity of songs like “Psychomania”, “Inherit the Earth ”, “Starved to Death” and “Scared of the Dark” and tell me this isn’t what we all love in eighties crossover! Mike and the Mechanics to brytyjska grupa rockowo-popowa stworzona przez Mike'a Rutheforda, gitarzystę i basistę Genesis, w 1985 roku. Grupie Mike & the Mechanics największy sukces przyniosły jej dwa pierwsze albumy - Mike + the Mechanics z 1985 roku oraz The Living Years z 1988, z których pochodzą m.in. utwory Silent Running i The Living Years. W skład zespołu wchodzą także Paul Carrack - wokalista, klawiszowiec i gitarzysta, Adrian Lee - klawiszowiec, Peter Van Hooke - perkusista. Po śmierci wokalisty Paula Younga w roku 2000, zespół zawiesił działalność, by powrócić w 2004 pod nazwą Mike & the Mechanics featuring Paul Carrack, jednak po niedługim czasie rozwiązał się. W 2010 zespół został reaktywowany w nowym składzie. Wstawka zawiera piątą płytę zespołu, ostatnią w składzie z wokalistą Paulem Youngiem. ..::OPIS::.. Po przesłuchaniu kolejnej płyty Grand Magus pierwsze co przychodzi mi do głowy, to pytanie: dlaczego większość ich albumów brzmi dokładnie tak samo? Czy muzycy zespołu nie potrafią wyjść poza prezentowaną, wąską jak źrenice narkomana, stylistykę na której zjedli zęby i w której niczego godnego uwagi już nie odkryją? Jest to oczywiście pytanie retoryczne, na które nie spodziewam się uzyskać odpowiedzi, a jednak irytuje mnie, że JB Christoffersson, były członek intrygujących Spiritual Beggars prezentuje słuchaczom taką sieczkę. Oczywiście, muzycy potrafią sprawnie posługiwać się instrumentami (tylko czy nie jest to warunek sine qua non grania czegokolwiek?) a JB brzmi tak dobrze jak zawsze, nie tracąc nic z prezentowanej od lat chropowatej i równocześnie ciepłej maniery śpiewania. Niestety, Grand Magus zapomnieli, że w trakcie prac warto pomyśleć również nad melodią i ciekawymi riffami i, przede wszystkim, sensownie ułożyć je w ramach spójnego albumu. Na „Sword Songs” utwory zlewają się w przydługawą, monotonną papkę. W pewnym momencie miałem nawet wrażenie, że odtwarzacz przerzucił się na ich poprzedni album „Triumph and Power”. Być może jest to odrobinę zbyt oczywista hiperbola, ale naprawdę łatwo się pomylić: obie płyty są niemal identyczne! Zastanawia mnie tylko, po co nagrywać kolejne niekończące się wariacje tego samego utworu. W przeszłości Ludwig Witt (perkusja) i JB (wokal) pokazywali już przecież, że wiedzą jak nagrywać intrygujące albumy (jak chociażby „On Fire” wspomnianych już Spiritual Beggars). Tyle, że wówczas nie oni odgrywali pierwsze skrzypce z obrębie formacji – w Beggarsach rządzili Michael Amott i Par Wiberg – z dobrym zresztą skutkiem. W Grad Magus na ostatnich albumach skupiają się niestety na tworzeniu gładkich ugrzecznionych i wyzbytych z energii papkowatych pseudo-metalowych utworów, jak „Freja’s Choice” , „Master of the Land” czy, o zgrozo, „Forged in Iron – Crowned in Steel”. Za to właśnie chętnie wymierzyłbym im siarczystego kopniaka. Nie ze złości jednak, a po to aby zmotywować – bo stać ich na więcej. Kuba Kozłowski I can’t help feeling with Grand Magus that they could be so much more if they only had a finishing touch. When these guys really get a bee under their bonnets and throw everything at a few songs, those cuts usually stand out on their respective albums, as ‘Storm King’ did on the The Hunt or like ‘At Midnight They’ll Get Wise’ on Hammer of the North. As a three-piece, the band’s simplicity is understandable, though the lack of energy and creativity that can be seen at times is what stands between recognition and greatness. As such, the Swedes’ occasional brilliance only serves to highlight their usual dependability and average quality albums, disappointing me more often than they meet my expectations. Sword Songs continues on the trio’s dogged journey in the same vein as before, melding classic heavy metal to a doomy guitar sound and soaking it all in a big barrel of warrior’s mead to produce that distinctive Viking flavour. Stripped back to a mere 35 minutes, you would hope that this album is filled to the brim with great moments and a vigorous approach, which is certainly what the opening pair of songs provides. ‘Freya’s Choice’ kicks things off in unexpected fashion, with a chugging riff reminiscent of metalcore that ignites with a low growl, before a clattering drum fill sets up the more traditional Grand Magus riffing style. It’s nice to see the band trying something new, which also marks the heavier, grinding riffs in the chorus of ‘Master of the Land’, while ‘Varangian’ contributes to the same cause with a happily winding riff from the folk metal textbook, giving the song an easy momentum and buoyant rush of energy following the chorus. All of these extra additions gives Sword Songs something of a distinct character among Grand Magus’s work, especially since it binds itself rather tighter to the Viking metal/battle metal movement than ever before, in the lyrical content as well as the belligerent riffing. However, this heralds the first time that Grand Magus could conceivably be thought of as part of a scene, their earlier work rarely settling comfortably among their neighbours. That means that at times it feels as if the band were too content to make simple hooks and capture the listener by the songs’ familiarity instead of attempting something more distinctive, as achieved by the raw power of ‘Master of the Land’ and the dramatic opener. The laidback feeling of some of the verses is totally at odds with the nature of the powerful riffs and the equally powerful voice of JB Cristoffersson when he makes full use of his pipes. ‘Last One to Fall’ is a prime culprit, simply pushing power chords into spaces where something more purposeful is needed – and indeed is expected if the pumping drum beat is anything to go by. The same thing happens to some extent in ‘Every Day There’s a Battle to Fight’, though, as the closer, the relaxed approach is more understandable and works to produce nostalgic atmosphere at the opening of the song. Upon reaching the chorus, it’s a different story however: lines like “Got to get up, be strong and fight them all / Never let the fear stand in your way” might sound better if sung with conviction, something that just isn’t present in either the vocals or the music, turning a potentially inspiring message into an ambiguous ending. On the flip side, that simplicity also makes Sword Songs easy to get into. Even during the first listen, you’ll find it difficult not to join in with the “Viking metal!” refrain in ‘Forged in Iron – Crowned in Steel’, while after a couple more listens your house will resound with the tones of more exuberant numbers like ‘Born For Battle (Black Dog Of Brocéliande)’ as you roar them out from every room. None of the songs feel like total letdowns, similar to the case of the similarly balanced The Hunt, even ‘Last One to Fall’ pulling itself into shape with an immense doomy bridge and passionate chorus. The inclusion of ‘Hugr’ (another in the band’s tradition of awkwardly monikered instrumentals) seems unnecessary, though for anyone still hungry after eight proper songs, there’s a bonus track and an interesting cover of Deep Purple’s ‘Stormbringer’ on the digipack, both of which are worth a couple of spins. Despite one or two underwhelming moments, Sword Songs wins out due to a good balance of tasty marching riffs, classic lead guitar, and anthemic bravado, rounded out by decent performances on all instruments. Seeing the band broaden their range also bodes well for the future. The best songs here are probably ‘Born for Battle’, ‘Freja’s Choice’, and ‘Frost and Fire’, which are also those that keep their energy and focus from beginning to end. W przeszłości Ludwig Witt (perkusja) i JB (wokal) pokazywali już przecież, że wiedzą jak nagrywać intrygujące albumy (jak chociażby „On Fire” wspomnianych już Spiritual Beggars). Tyle, że wówczas nie oni odgrywali pierwsze skrzypce z obrębie formacji – w Beggarsach rządzili Michael Amott i Par Wiberg – z dobrym zresztą skutkiem. W Grad Magus na ostatnich albumach skupiają się niestety na tworzeniu gładkich ugrzecznionych i wyzbytych z energii papkowatych pseudo-metalowych utworów, jak „Freja’s Choice” , „Master of the Land” czy, o zgrozo, „Forged in Iron – Crowned in Steel”. Za to właśnie chętnie wymierzyłbym im siarczystego kopniaka. Nie ze złości jednak, a po to aby zmotywować – bo stać ich na więcej. Kuba Kozłowski I can’t help feeling with Grand Magus that they could be so much more if they only had a finishing touch. When these guys really get a bee under their bonnets and throw everything at a few songs, those cuts usually stand out on their respective albums, as ‘Storm King’ did on the The Hunt or like ‘At Midnight They’ll Get Wise’ on Hammer of the North. As a three-piece, the band’s simplicity is understandable, though the lack of energy and creativity that can be seen at times is what stands between recognition and greatness. As such, the Swedes’ occasional brilliance only serves to highlight their usual dependability and average quality albums, disappointing me more often than they meet my expectations. Sword Songs continues on the trio’s dogged journey in the same vein as before, melding classic heavy metal to a doomy guitar sound and soaking it all in a big barrel of warrior’s mead to produce that distinctive Viking flavour. Stripped back to a mere 35 minutes, you would hope that this album is filled to the brim with great moments and a vigorous approach, which is certainly what the opening pair of songs provides. ‘Freya’s Choice’ kicks things off in unexpected fashion, with a chugging riff reminiscent of metalcore that ignites with a low growl, before a clattering drum fill sets up the more traditional Grand Magus riffing style. It’s nice to see the band trying something new, which also marks the heavier, grinding riffs in the chorus of ‘Master of the Land’, while ‘Varangian’ contributes to the same cause with a happily winding riff from the folk metal textbook, giving the song an easy momentum and buoyant rush of energy following the chorus. All of these extra additions gives Sword Songs something of a distinct character among Grand Magus’s work, especially since it binds itself rather tighter to the Viking metal/battle metal movement than ever before, in the lyrical content as well as the belligerent riffing. However, this heralds the first time that Grand Magus could conceivably be thought of as part of a scene, their earlier work rarely settling comfortably among their neighbours. That means that at times it feels as if the band were too content to make simple hooks and capture the listener by the songs’ familiarity instead of attempting something more distinctive, as achieved by the raw power of ‘Master of the Land’ and the dramatic opener. The laidback feeling of some of the verses is totally at odds with the nature of the powerful riffs and the equally powerful voice of JB Cristoffersson when he makes full use of his pipes. ‘Last One to Fall’ is a prime culprit, simply pushing power chords into spaces where something more purposeful is needed – and indeed is expected if the pumping drum beat is anything to go by. The same thing happens to some extent in ‘Every Day There’s a Battle to Fight’, though, as the closer, the relaxed approach is more understandable and works to produce nostalgic atmosphere at the opening of the song. Upon reaching the chorus, it’s a different story however: lines like “Got to get up, be strong and fight them all / Never let the fear stand in your way” might sound better if sung with conviction, something that just isn’t present in either the vocals or the music, turning a potentially inspiring message into an ambiguous ending. On the flip side, that simplicity also makes Sword Songs easy to get into. Even during the first listen, you’ll find it difficult not to join in with the “Viking metal!” refrain in ‘Forged in Iron – Crowned in Steel’, while after a couple more listens your house will resound with the tones of more exuberant numbers like ‘Born For Battle (Black Dog Of Brocéliande)’ as you roar them out from every room. None of the songs feel like total letdowns, similar to the case of the similarly balanced The Hunt, even ‘Last One to Fall’ pulling itself into shape with an immense doomy bridge and passionate chorus. The inclusion of ‘Hugr’ (another in the band’s tradition of awkwardly monikered instrumentals) seems unnecessary, though for anyone still hungry after eight proper songs, there’s a bonus track and an interesting cover of Deep Purple’s ‘Stormbringer’ on the digipack, both of which are worth a couple of spins. Despite one or two underwhelming moments, Sword Songs wins out due to a good balance of tasty marching riffs, classic lead guitar, and anthemic bravado, rounded out by decent performances on all instruments. Seeing the band broaden their range also bodes well for the future. The best songs here are probably ‘Born for Battle’, ‘Freja’s Choice’, and ‘Frost and Fire’, which are also those that keep their energy and focus from beginning to end. ..::OPIS::.. Czy możliwe jest nagranie płyty metalowej, na której w ogóle nie byłoby powielania sztampowych klisz oraz ocierania się o kicz i infantylność? Albumu zdradzającego inspirację ambitniejszymi formami rocka, ale bez nadmiernego rozciągania utworów i przeładowywania ich licznymi riffami, które nie zawsze kleją się w całość? Pokazującego ponadprzeciętne umiejętności instrumentalistów, a nie jedynie pseudo-wirtuozerię sprowadzającą się do grania szybkich, lecz pozbawionych finezji solówek? Bez piszczących lub growlujących wokalistów? Oczywiście, jest to możliwe. Nie brakuje wydawnictw, które spełniają jedno lub kilka z tych kryteriów. Trafić jednak na taki, który spełniałby je wszystkie, jest niezwykle trudno. A mnie się to właśnie zdarzyło z najnowszym albumem tria Dysrhythmia, "Coffin of Conviction". Amerykański zespół istnieje już ćwierć wieku, a najnowsza płyta jest jego dziesiątą. Muzycznie niewiele przez ten czas się zmieniło - trio od początku łączy metalowy ciężar z precyzją i złożonością math rocka. Skład też jest stabilny, od początku współtworzą go gitarzysta Kevin Hufnahel oraz perkusista Jeff Eber, a od dwudziestu lat gra z nimi basista i sporadycznie drugi gitarzysta Colin Marston. Dzięki temu grupa jest świetnie zgrana, a to ogromnie ważne w tego typu muzyce, gdzie nie mniej od indywidualnych umiejętności liczy się wzajemna interakcja, bo każdy instrument pełni tak samo istotną rolę. A w graniu o takim poziomie skomplikowania jeszcze trudniej o dobrą interakcję. Dysrhythmii ten problem nie dotyczy, bo trio miało sporo czasu, by dopracować zespołową współpracę. "Coffin for Conviction" to album bardzo krótki - siedem utworów o łącznej długości dokładnie pół godziny - ale też niezwykle intensywny i odpowiednio zwarty, bez zbyt daleko idących prób urozmaicenia całości. Otwiera całość potężny utwór tytułowy, powalający metalowym ciężarem riffów, ale także błyskotliwą, złożoną perkusją oraz łagodniejszymi wstawkami czystej gitary i syntezatora. Słychać tu pewne echa twórczości Cynic czy późnego Death - obaj gitarzyści na co dzień grają w nieco bardziej typowych kapelach metalowych - choć wydaje się to jeszcze mocniej skomplikowane, a ponadto twórczość Dysrhythmii jest całkowicie instrumentalna. Podobne rejony trio eksploruje choćby jeszcze w "Headspace Extraction" czy "The Luxury of Disbelief", gdzie do powyższych elementów dochodzą jeszcze masywne partie basu. Trochę bardziej przystępne, niemalże chwytliwe granie przeważa w "All Faults". A w "No Breath After Beauty" oraz "Light from the Zenith" muzycy całkiem rezygnują z przesterów i wychodzi wtedy właściwie czysty math rock, przywołujący nawet pewne skojarzenia z ejtisowym King Crimson. "Coffin for Conviction" to rzadki przykład albumu metalowego, który podoba mi się nie pomimo pewnych elementów, za którymi raczej nie przepadam, a dlatego, że ich tu praktycznie nie ma. Oczywiście można polemizować, czy to jeszcze w ogóle jest metal, czy po prostu cięższa odmiana math lub prog rocka. Momentami Dysrhythmia mocno wykracza poza metal, ale wciąż ma z nim wiele wspólnego - posłuchajcie tylko tych riffów, solówek i pracy perkusji w "Subliminal Order", a przecież takich patentów nie brakuje też w większości pozostałych kawałków. ..::OPIS::.. Trzy dekady tworzenia muzyki, występów na żywo na całym świecie i szerzenia przesłania pokoju. Z tej wyjątkowej okazji zespół wydał zestaw CD zawierający osiem płyt z sześcioma albumami zespołu i dodatkową kolekcją piosenek z ostatnich 30 lat (na dwóch dodatkowych płytach CD). Zestaw zawiera też bogatą 112-stronicową książeczkę ze specjalnymi notatkami dotyczącymi każdego albumu. '30 Years Of Oriental Metal' ukazał się 10 grudnia 2021 nakładem Century Media. Orphaned Land powstał w 1992 roku, a rok później wydali kasetę demo „The Beloved’s Cry”. Materiał ten stał się podstawą pierwszego albumu zespołu, który ukazał się nakładem francuskiej Holy Records i stanowi jego drugą część. Pierwsza jest premierowa i kształtuje charakter tego izraelskiego zespołu, który w swojej muzyce przemyca tyle klimatu z kultur bliskiego wschodu, a całość jawi się pod wskazującym już wiele tytułem „Sahara”. Klimat ten głównie objawia się w tradycyjnych instrumentach ludowych podobnych do cytr i oczywiście różnych bębenków. Już na samym początku człowiek czuje się jak na pustyni, pod jakąś płachtą, choć nie jest to stan permanentny. Orphaned Land gra gotycki doom i w ich muzyce czuć taki mroczny urok. Są posępne riffy i zdarte growlingi, są mocniejsze fragmenty i trochę ciężaru. Przez cały czas jednak dzieje się coś jeszcze. A to zagrają perskie gitarowe melodyjki, a to powrócą brzdęki na tych cytrach albo pojawiają się klawiszowe pasaże czy kobiece śpiewy jak w „Ornaments Of Gold”. Jest tego duża zmienność, także jeżeli chodzi o wokale. Takim numerem, gdzie możemy znaleźć wszystkiego po trochu jest „Seasons Unite”, wiele folkloru jest w końcówce. Na pewno wpływ na wielość wątków ma to, że utwory są długie, ale też ciekawie przemyślane. Trzymają spójność muzyczną, lecz jednocześnie przechodzą metamorfozy i urozmaicenia. Niektóre jednak są całkiem we własnym stylu. „Aldiar Al. Mukadisa” to zupełnie ludowa pieśń, która przechodzi potem wręcz w jakiś rytuał i tajemnicze zaklęcia, zaś „Beloved’s Cry” to spokojna, atmosferyczna piosenka. Na swoim debiucie Orphaned Land udanie połączył metalowe granie z własną tożsamością. Nadał specyfiki swojemu dziełu, zarazem nie przesadzając i utrzymując muzyczną płynność pomiędzy dwoma światami. Wyszła z tego interesująca mieszanka, wzbudzająca zainteresowanie swoją autentycznością i egzotyką. Wujas The '90s. Being a metalhead in the Middle East was an amazing experience. We formed Orphaned Land in 1991, right in the same year of the Gulf War, and the opener of the album Sahara, "The Sahara's Storm", both lyrically and musically was a pure reflection of the birth of the new founded Oriental Metal genre. Living in a terror, bleeding zone, full of weapons, bloodsheds and conflicts made metal to be a perfect naturally match to our characters. On the one hand, it seemed like it was impossible to find a more "metallic" place in the world than the Middle East, on the other hand, we felt like we are in an unknown forgotten landscape. Everyone was familiar with bands from the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden and even Sepultura from Brazil. Israel, not to mention the whole Middle East, was and still is out of the touring route of 99% of the scene bands (today there are many shows in Israel, and just a few only in Lebanon and Dubai). At the beginning we wanted to sound like At The Gates, Morbid Angel, Death, Deicide. But very fast we reached the conclusion that we are from a different place, a place with different temperature, culture and colours, that is also the source of all the monotheistic beliefs. Straight from the first moment when our lyrics, in combination with usage of folk-rhythms, instruments and motives, started to focus on our region's political and religious problems, we felt that we've created a new genre in the metal scene: Oriental Metal. With Oriental Metal we felt and still feel that we are making the worldwide metal scene wider, richer and bigger. We had to do everything by ourselves back then, the studios, the sound technique - no one knew what is metal or how to record and mix it. Therefore the sound and production sometimes might appear rough on our first two albums, but yet they are underground diamonds to many metalheads. Holy Records were the first ones to discover us, giving us a chance and a recording budget. Suddenly we found ourselves sitting in a studio and recording a 70 years old blind man who was playing the kannun, in order to investigate the roots we wanted to combine with our metal. We found ourselves sitting with Iron Maiden and Slayer t-shirts inside synagogues and while the old fallas were singing and chanting, we were recording them with hidden tapes. That was an amazing feeling, a feeling like we have found a meaning in our strange lifes. We felt we are doing something important, we found our destiny in this life. Everything was fascinating back in these days. While most bands were using skulls, swords, blood and more, we've decided to use a photo of a mosque on our album front cover, we've decided to use both Hebrew and Arabic along with English. We've decided to play and sing with quarter tones while the west is working only with half tones. We've decided to be the flag of the Middle Eastern metal heads, even though many of them are living in so called "enemy countries". Today we can say that we have a huge movement of fans from the Middle East. Both Sahara & El Norra Alila are milestones of Oriental Metal. In our 25 years career, they are the first two sons of many more yet to come of Oriental Metal - they are our childhood bravery albums. Long live Oriental Metal! ..::OPIS::.. A real hidden gem this one, which is generally much more progressive than Curved Air's previous albums. With Daryl Way and Francis Monkman no longer in the band, Sonja Kristina, whose distinctive voice is one of the band's strongest trademarks, was the only original member left. She continued however to surround herself with highly competent musicians, including the multi-talented Eddie Jobson. The other Curved Air trademark, the violin of Way was mainly replaced by keyboards, with Jobson only reverting to violin on a couple of tracks. "Purple speed queen" is a storming opener, with a great synthesiser solo in the Rick Wakeman vein. "Elfin Boy" follows on much more softly, Kristina's voice never sounded more haunting than it does here. The track is a real weepy, with beautifully sympathetic violin accompaniment. "Graceful his fingers, they waltz on the strings, gentle the song that he sings", as the lyrics go. The third track "Metamorphosis", is in my opinion Curved Air's best ever track. Starting with almost classical piano, the track builds and softens, quickens and slows. Sonja's vocals vary from the almost child like, to seductive temptress. They combine with some really infectious themes and great instrumental work for over 10 minutes, to make for a real prog classic. Kristina takes something of a back seat on side 2, with an instrumental track, and a rare (for Curved Air) male vocal lead on "Two three two". The feature track on side 2 is however the longer final song, "Easy". For want of a better description, this is a prog power ballad. Once again, the track has superb keyboards including an excellent instrumental break, and Kristina on top form vocally. If all Curved Air means to you is the full frontal nudity of the cover of their first album, plus variations on "Vivaldi", this album will open up a whole new dimension for you. Undoubtedly their best, but criminally very difficult to track down on CD. Nice painting of the then current line up on the rear cover too. 2006 update - The album has finally been released on CD. 'Air Cut' sports a crisp and lively production, the compositions are tighter, and the addition of the talented Jobson (on Electric Violin and Keyboards) adds multi-coloured textures and vibrance to the music. Jobson's selection of Keyboards is that of Monkman's - Hammond, Mellotron, VCS 3 Synth, Harpsichord, Piano, Electric-Piano and he utilises them thoughtfully to breathe ever more life into the songs on this album, not to mention that his violin playing is extraordinary - whilst Way played with strong classical leanings, EJ was more 'rock', which is one possible reason why this album is so appealing and entertaining. Sonja Kristina's vocals are superb (almost a cross between the beautifully trained voice of Annie Haslam with the hard-rockin' spirit of Suzi Quatro) and future CARAVAN bassist Mike Wedgewood sounding more confident with his instrument. Two unknowns ; Kirby on Guitars and Jim Russell on Drums complete this version of the band. Of the 8 tracks, what I think are 'lesser' ones - an acoustic, folky little ditty by the name of 'World', and a stripped-down hard-rock tune 'Two-Three-Two', whilst not as engaging as the remaining 6 pieces, they serve as a light refreshment after (or before, depending on how you look at it) the elaborate and dynamic Prog arrangements around them. Fellow reviewer 'Salmacis' has previously submitted a masterful track-by-track analysis of this album, and nailed it, spot on. I still insist on this being a 5 star record. ..::OPIS::.. A real hidden gem this one, which is generally much more progressive than Curved Air's previous albums. With Daryl Way and Francis Monkman no longer in the band, Sonja Kristina, whose distinctive voice is one of the band's strongest trademarks, was the only original member left. She continued however to surround herself with highly competent musicians, including the multi-talented Eddie Jobson. The other Curved Air trademark, the violin of Way was mainly replaced by keyboards, with Jobson only reverting to violin on a couple of tracks. "Purple speed queen" is a storming opener, with a great synthesiser solo in the Rick Wakeman vein. "Elfin Boy" follows on much more softly, Kristina's voice never sounded more haunting than it does here. The track is a real weepy, with beautifully sympathetic violin accompaniment. To nie jest heavy rockowy Demian z Texasu (przeistoczony z psychodelicznej formacji Bubble Puppy), ale całkiem inny, progresywny, również amerykański Demian, który swój jedyny, bardzo rzadki album wydał w 1974 roku nakładem lokalnej wytworni Starburst. Rock Star Farm to rodzaj ambitnej rock opery, poruszającej temat najbardziej negatywnej strony rockowego stylu życia, czyli... przedwczesnej śmierci. Więcej na ten temat w libretto skopiowanym wewnątrz bookletu, natomiast sama muzyka to pełne zmienne klimatów, bardzo oryginalne, całkiem chwytliwe i bardzo profesjonalne skrzyżowanie późnawych The Doors z hardrockowym brzmieniem (wolne tempa + Hammondy) grupy Bloodrock oraz z fajnym, mocnym wokalem będącym wypadkową Arthura Browna i Davida Bowiego. Wszystkie, dość krótkie nagrania tworzą rodzaj 35-minutowej, rockowej suitę przy której trudno się nudzić i z pewnością warto poznać!
