Niesamowita, hipnotyczna mieszanka brytyjskiego heavy rocka z wokalem śpiewanym po 'angielsku', zabarwionym wyraźnie japońskim akcentem – tworząca jedyny w swoim rodzaju psychodeliczny klimat, który wciąż hipnotyzuje miłośników rocka na całym świecie.

Rewelacja! Wydany latem 1971 roku drugi album tej świetnej japońskiej grupy to kapitalne połączenie czasem posuniętej niemal do ekstremum stylistyki Black Sabbath i Led Zeppelin - z elementami dwóch gitar prowadzących w stylu Wishbone Ash! Mnóstwo zaskakujących, ultra ciężkich riffów, mnóstwo zmian tempa i nastroju, wzorcowa, nieco bluesująca gra gitarzysty oraz zero wypełniaczy.

Jedyną, niewielką wadą tego rewelacyjnego albumu jest nie do końca przekonujący angielski wokalisty... Ale kogo to tak naprawdę obchodzi? Obok pierwszych dwóch płyt grupy Flower Travellin' Band to chyba najbardziej kultowy album w historii japońskiego ciężkiego rocka, w oryginale wytwórni Denon (i w niemal idealnym stanie) wart obecnie 1000 dolarów!

Dodatkowo dołączono niepublikowaną wcześniej na CD koncertową (inną niż na CD "Live!"), 8-minutową wersję utworu "Nightmare"!

Kazuo Takeda, japoński gitarzysta zafascynowany muzyką Cream i The Yardbirds wraz z trójką szkolnych przyjaciół założył na początku 1969r. zespół BLUES CREATION. Bardzo szybko, bo już w październiku tego samego roku nakładem wytwórni Polydor ukazała się ich debiutancka, bardzo dobra zresztą, płyta zatytułowana po prostu „Blues Creation”. Zawierała głównie standardy muzyki bluesowej m.in takich twórców jak Sonny Boy Williamsona, Willie Dixona (kapitalny „Spoonful”), Mudy Watersa (słynny „Rollin’ And Tumblin”), Memphis Slima, ale też i kompozycję Johna Mayalla i Erica Claptona z okresu Blues Breakers („Double Crossing Time”).

Tamtejsi fani spragnieni bluesowej muzyki w wykonaniu rodzimych wykonawców spowodowali, że płyta odniosła duży sukces komercyjny. Niemal wszyscy członkowie byli zdania, że trzeba iść za ciosem i nagrać kolejną bluesową płytę. No właśnie – niemal wszyscy oprócz jej lidera, bowiem Takeda zafascynowany wydanymi nie tak dawno pierwszymi płytami Led Zeppelin i Black Sabbath chciał podążyć w tym kierunku. Nie uzyskawszy aprobaty swoich przyjaciół co do dalszego kierunku rozwoju muzycznego zespołu rozwiązał BLUES CREATION (niektórzy twierdzą, że po prostu wszystkich ich wyrzucił), by kilka miesięcy później powołać go z powrotem do życia w zupełnie nowym składzie. Na marginesie dodam tylko, że pierwszy wokalista BLUES CREATION, Fumio Nunoya, po rozstaniu z Takedą utworzył wkrótce świetny zespół Dew grający ciężką odmianę blues rocka.

W sierpniu 1971r. wychodzi drugi album zespołu „Demon And Eleven Children” z autorskimi kompozycjami lidera grupy. Jeśli miałbym określić go jednym słowem to powiem, że jest on po prostu KAPITALNY!!! Wstrzelił się idealnie w epokę stylistyczną wspomnianych wyżej Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, czy Mountain. Otwierający całość „Atomic Bomb Away” to powolny ciężki acidowo – apokaliptyczny walec drogowy. Fantastyczna gra gitarzystów, zmiany tempa, ciężkie riffy. A zaraz po nim zaczynający się harmonijką ustną blues rockowy „Mississippi Mountain Blues” , gdzie zresztą harmonijka udanie prowadzi dialog z gitara prowadząca. Ale nie ma postoju, gdyż „Just I Was Born” porywa nas do galopu przed goniącą z tyłu Godzillą. Kolejna wzorcowa gra gitarzystów zapiera dech w piersiach! Z kolei „Sorrow” to urokliwa melodyjna kompozycja łącząca styl Sabbathów z Budgie. Zresztą przypomina ona trochę „Parents” walijskiego tria i aż żal, że nikt jej nie wypromował w epoce, bo obok właśnie „Rodziców”, czy „Dziecka w czasie” Deep Purple „Smutek” miałby szansę stać się takim samym muzycznym killerem wszech czasów! Następny „Brane Buster” (tylko dwie minuty) to popis Kazuo Takedy i jego gitary pokazujący jak w tak króciutkiej formie muzycznej można pomieścić tyle ciekawej muzyki. Czapki z głów! I to samo można powiedzieć o „Sooner Or Later” będący popisem lidera, ale także i całego zespołu. Wzmacniacz i głośniki rozgrzane u mnie niczym w kuźni ogromne palenisko – dają żaru i czadu. Bo nie sposób tego słuchać inaczej niż na „full”. Całość kończy epicka ponad dziewięciominutowa tytułowa kompozycja „Demon And Eleven Children„. Zmiany tempa, mnóstwo ciężkich riffów, stylistyka Zeppelina i Sabbath posunięta niemal do ekstremum, czyli esencja hard rocka początku lat 70-tych. I tylko żal, że geograficznie odizolowani samuraje z gitarami nie dotarli wówczas do Europy i nie dołączyli do ścisłej czołówki ówczesnych herosów muzycznych, którymi niewątpliwie byli!

W tym samym miesiącu, dokładnie 7 sierpnia 1971r. BLUES CREATION wystąpili w Nagatsugawie na festiwalu muzycznym The 2nd All Japan Folk Jamboree, gdzie zarejestrowano ich koncert z myślą o wydaniu go na płycie. Z niewiadomych do dziś powodów koncertowa płyta nie ukazała się w tamtym czasie a nagrania, które przeleżały na półce wiele lat zostały opublikowane i wydane na CD dopiero w 1998r! Płyta „Live 1971” pokazuje zespół bardziej od strony bluesowej, choć zaprezentowane standardy zagrał po swojemu – z rockowym, mocnym zacięciem, ciężko i intensywnie – z niezliczonymi rozbudowanymi improwizacjami. Ależ tego się słucha! W dwóch nagraniach z grupą zaśpiewała wokalistka Carmen Maki, określana jako „Japońska Janis Joplin”.

To spotkanie zaowocowało wydanym rok później ich wspólnym albumem zatytułowanym „Carmen Maki And Blues Creation” przynoszący kolejną dawkę bluesa z rockiem, aczkolwiek więcej mamy tu tego pierwszego. Dominują bowiem powolne, bluesowe ballady śpiewane bardzo pewnym, czystym, krystalicznym głosem. Cięższe utwory nie straciły jednak nic ze swej mocy, choć malkontenci uważają, że ten album przeznaczony jest bardziej dla fanów wokalistki niż dla fanów BLUES CREATION. Prawda jak zwykle leży po środku. Jak dla mnie – bomba! I to wcale nie przypadek, że wszystkie te cztery albumy stoją u mnie na półce i są perełkami w mojej płytotece!

Po nagraniu tego albumu Kazuo Takeda definitywnie rozwiązał zespół choć z grania muzyki nie zrezygnował. Cztery lata później powołał do życia grupę CREATION, z którą wspólnie z amerykańskim hard rockowym zespołem Mountain koncertował po Japonii. CREATION wydali dwa albumy nagrane we współpracy z Felixem Pappalardim (basistą Mountain), po czym gitarzysta rozpoczął nagrywanie solowych płyt. Wydał ich w sumie ponad 20, a od czasu do czasu, jak donosi japońska prasa muzyczna, także koncertuje (najczęściej po Azji) wspólnie z byłym perkusistą CREATION. Dla mnie, jak i dla wielu fanów starego rocka pozostanie jednak w pamięci jako japoński samuraj z gitarą z genialnej płyty "Demon And Eleven Chidren".

Enthral was offered a recording deal by Hot Records and recruited bassist Martin Rafoss as a permanent member. HOT records was Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir’s label formed in Oslo, Norway, around 1995. In May1997 Enthral released their debut album “Prophecies of the Dying”. The album is pure epic Norwegian Black Metal from the 90’s as it was ment to be. All artwork and booklet carefully restored.

No i nie mówiłem? Same reedycje i wznowienia ostatnio do mnie wpadają. Jak tak dalej pójdzie, to nic nowego nie będzie już wydawane, hehe…

No dobra, przesadzam, po prostu Hooked on Metal Records specjalizuje się w reedycjach. Tym razem padło na drugi krążek Szwedów z Axewitch. Trzy lata temu ten sam label wypuścił wznowienie debiutu, więc logika (i głód maniaków!) wskazuje, że przyszła właśnie kolej na album numer dwa.

Wydany oryginalnie w 1984 roku (bardzo dobry rocznik, a ponoć ludzie urodzeni w tym roku mają strasznie dużo pozytywnych cech, podobnie jak albumy które się wtedy ukazały) zatytułowany „Visions of the Past” album po tych czterdziestu latach całkiem nieźle się broni. Jest to granie z dużą dozą melodii, która czterdzieści lat temu niekoniecznie oznaczała jeszcze wiochę. Refreny wpadają w ucho i najzwyczajniej w świecie kawałki z drugiej płyty Axewitch możecie sobie nucić przy prostych czynnościach dnia codziennego. Tempa są średnio szybkie, raczej standardowe dla nagrań z tej ery – przynajmniej dla muzyki określanej po prostu jako heavy metal, a nie żaden speed czy coś. Dostajemy również jeden wolniejszy numer i gwoli ścisłości, on również się broni.

Mowa o wznowieniu, więc szanujące się wznowienie powinno zawierać jakieś rarytasy, z drugiej strony nie każdy lubi to rozwiązanie. Hooked on Metal Recrods wyciąga rękę właśnie do tych drugich. Nie ma tu bonusowych kawałków, nie ma żadnych skanów plakatów czy flayersów. Że tak powiem – goła płyta, a muzyka broni się sama.

No i rzeczywiście po tych czterdziestu latach broni się nieźle. Na tyle, że zespół nadal działa i nagrywa. A Katii i Dominikowi chwała za odświeżenie tego albumu.

Welcome back to The Lazarus Pit, a look back at should-be classic records that don’t get nearly enough love. Today we’re looking at Axewitch’s 1984 record Visions of the Past. This second album from the Swedish trad/NWOBHM band is an excellent mean median example of a more or less forgotten metal album from 1984, full of heart—overflowing with heart—and embodying everything that made the era so exciting.

Now, a note: anyone following this column over the past few months could be forgiven for accusing me of falling into a sort of doey-eyed nostalgia over poverty metal that really wasn’t exactly turning a lot of heads at the time. But you have to readjust that lens: there are only so many poverty metal albums from 1984 (granted, that number is pretty large), and that’s a time and place that can’t be recreated now. So, sure, I suppose this is a lesson in re-evaluation, a look back at some records that are not top tier, I’m not denying that, but upon closer investigation (something none of us have done with this record in years) contains a certain magic in it that is lost in time, and, indeed, lost to the second tier of metal bands of the era.

Man, there’s a chorus, the unexpected turn in melody when it hits never failing to get the dopamine, and adrenaline, flowing. The song rules—it falls somewhere between cold gothic trad and NWOBHM, I’ve heard countless retro trad bands follow its formula exactly, and it’s a sound that more or less reaffirms life when you need it to. Based on the strength of this song, the discount bins were not were Visions of the Past should have ended up.

“Give them Hell” follows that up with a speedy trad metal rocker with economic riffs flying hard and mighty, a smart choice for a second cut here. “Tonight” just makes you want to party hard like it’s a summer Saturday night in 1984, maybe 1985, all over again. It turns its back on the cover art and is concerned less with the slaying of the dragon than it is with letting the beer flow freely, and Axewitch make you realize, yeah, there’s time for both. “Hot Lady” continues this line of thought, as the band threaten to get a bit too stoopid, but their charm keeps them above the lowest common denominator here, even if the end result is a bit unremarkable.

“Stand Up” kicks off side B with a brisk and energetic anthem, one that, with a bit of convincing, wouldn’t be wildly out of place on a prime-era Accept record. Love the smart songwriting come chorus-time; this must have sounded amazing when played live around the time of this record’s release.

“Heading for a Storm” is ambitious and the band gets through the mellower parts with no shortage of gusto, even if they don’t quite hit the mark; when it picks up, however, it packs a perfect metal punch, solid and sturdy, checking off all the boxes. It’s a bit much at 6:21, but it’s got spirit. “Born In Hell” has both a gallop part and a dirgey swamp part to it; “Time to Live” has a bit of late-album boogie; “Evil Circle”’s opening riff is absolute, 100-percent pure metal glory.

Again, I’m not here to say every metal record released in the ’80s with a castle on the cover is good even though it’s imperfect… but, fuck it, that’s sort of the conclusion I’m reaching here after writing about this stuff for so long. But, also again: it’s not just nostalgia, it’s the realization that these records are time capsules of an era that can’t be replicated. There are some great bands mining trad territory out there today, and they get big horns up from me, but there’s just something special, warts and all, about these old records, young bands shooting high and hard, unaware of what glories or disasters the future may hold as they explore this exciting sonic terrain and, in some very small way, help lay down the framework of the modern metal we all live and die for today.

Not really, and strangely as a result of, I dunno, what could be revised ideas and/or clearer thinking, Visions of the Past spins with what could be heard as updated veneer that will likely fall under natural progression, however at the same time one should wonder if metal’s ’83 and ’84 winds of change blew the siding off the five-piece’s pre-’82 house which, by The Lord of Flies, had started to seem kinda dilapidated.

Whatever the reason, the unperturbed roster of Micke, Mange, Wallen, Matte, and Tommy unite once again and this time push more metal dynamic into the daylight that, up until now, had mostly been sheltered by the large hard rock outcropping that has been the band’s balcony since birth. Shove marks made in the gravel by the burly “Give Them Hell”, double bass-rumbled slabs in “Time to Live” and “Stand Up”, proud “Tonight”, and the opening title cut are evidence that Axewitch exuded at least perceptible effort to further burnish their reflective surfaces not unlike same year shiners from Quartz and Battleaxe, surfaces that were always there, hazily, as if smeared with white liquid wax, then neglected for the pouring of concrete.

Even the stony floors of “Born in Hell” and “Hot Lady” as well as jagged edges of “Time to Live” and “Stand Up” have a less morose and brighter climate compared to the band’s prior weather, which could come from the continued half notch or so jazz-up by another Decibel Studio production. Alas, despite what rises somewhere above the mark here, the album’s longest vision is also its weakest. “Heading up a Storm” is a half-ballad that meanders a bit near the start with a story predictably soft and serene, then just as predictably finds a hardened pace, then backtracks to stroll in place by retracing its similar cushion-soled footsteps. Luckily, complacency is blown to the side as it builds some fairly dramatic ‘the power in power ballad’ traction that hoofs it across a finish line that by the end was thirsty for turbulence.

The band’s known songwriting blueprint hasn’t really changed too noticeably since their inception, yet here the rock-to-metal ratio slides happily toward the latter, leveling off on more even terrain where the listener can feel like she’s treading forward through mid-‘80s calendar pages instead of being trapped on one in ’82. A listener could feel this way, or she could know for a fact the wind pushing against her blows in from a more metal-rampant ’84, and despite valiantly trudging forward through the same wind, Visions of the Past could still kinda sound a few gusts behind the times.

My customary research shows Visions of the Past landed at #12 on the Swedish hard rock charts with additional licensing through Neat Records in the U.K., Roadrunner in Europe, and Banzai in Canada. Combine that with the #7 placings of the Pray for Metal ep (beat out by Loverboy as well as everyone’s hard rock icon, Michael Bolton) and The Lord of Flies and we get an act that not only should have been, but still should be contenders to royalty that equals more than a runner-up ribbon from a tractor pull. Well, Axewitch’s (Axe Witch, Axewitch…I say screw the space) show isn’t over yet.

No i nie mówiłem? Same reedycje i wznowienia ostatnio do mnie wpadają. Jak tak dalej pójdzie, to nic nowego nie będzie już wydawane, hehe…

No dobra, przesadzam, po prostu Hooked on Metal Records specjalizuje się w reedycjach. Tym razem padło na drugi krążek Szwedów z Axewitch. Trzy lata temu ten sam label wypuścił wznowienie debiutu, więc logika (i głód maniaków!) wskazuje, że przyszła właśnie kolej na album numer dwa.

Wydany oryginalnie w 1984 roku (bardzo dobry rocznik, a ponoć ludzie urodzeni w tym roku mają strasznie dużo pozytywnych cech, podobnie jak albumy które się wtedy ukazały) zatytułowany „Visions of the Past” album po tych czterdziestu latach całkiem nieźle się broni. Jest to granie z dużą dozą melodii, która czterdzieści lat temu niekoniecznie oznaczała jeszcze wiochę. Refreny wpadają w ucho i najzwyczajniej w świecie kawałki z drugiej płyty Axewitch możecie sobie nucić przy prostych czynnościach dnia codziennego. Tempa są średnio szybkie, raczej standardowe dla nagrań z tej ery – przynajmniej dla muzyki określanej po prostu jako heavy metal, a nie żaden speed czy coś. Dostajemy również jeden wolniejszy numer i gwoli ścisłości, on również się broni.

Mowa o wznowieniu, więc szanujące się wznowienie powinno zawierać jakieś rarytasy, z drugiej strony nie każdy lubi to rozwiązanie. Hooked on Metal Recrods wyciąga rękę właśnie do tych drugich. Nie ma tu bonusowych kawałków, nie ma żadnych skanów plakatów czy flayersów. Że tak powiem – goła płyta, a muzyka broni się sama.

No i rzeczywiście po tych czterdziestu latach broni się nieźle. Na tyle, że zespół nadal działa i nagrywa. A Katii i Dominikowi chwała za odświeżenie tego albumu.

This second album from the Swedish trad/NWOBHM band is an excellent mean median example of a more or less forgotten metal album from 1984, full of heart—overflowing with heart—and embodying everything that made the era so exciting.

Now, a note: anyone following this column over the past few months could be forgiven for accusing me of falling into a sort of doey-eyed nostalgia over poverty metal that really wasn’t exactly turning a lot of heads at the time. But you have to readjust that lens: there are only so many poverty metal albums from 1984 (granted, that number is pretty large), and that’s a time and place that can’t be recreated now. So, sure, I suppose this is a lesson in re-evaluation, a look back at some records that are not top tier, I’m not denying that, but upon closer investigation (something none of us have done with this record in years) contains a certain magic in it that is lost in time, and, indeed, lost to the second tier of metal bands of the era.

Na "Star People" zebrano studyjne i koncertowe nagrania dokonane na przestrzeni siedmiu miesięcy, od sierpnia 1982 do lutego następnego roku. Davisowi przez cały ten czas towarzyszył w miarę stabilny skład, z saksofonistą Billem Evansem, gitarzystą Mikiem Sternem, basistą Marcusem Millerem (na początku 1983 roku zastąpionym przez Toma Barneya), perkusistą Alem Fosterem i perkusjonistą Mino Cinelu. W międzyczasie dołączył do nich drugi gitarzysta, John Scofield, którego bluesowy styl gry interesująco dopełnił brzmienie grupy.

Świetnie wypadają oba nagrania koncertowe, czyli "Come Get It" i "Speak". W przeciwieństwie do wydanej kilka miesięcy wcześniej koncertówki "We Want Miles", tutaj nie brakuje szaleństwa, energii i intensywności, jakie cechowały występy Davisa w poprzedniej dekadzie. Podobnie jak wtedy, muzycy mieszają funk, rock i jazz, choć już nie w tak awangardowy sposób, a psychodeliczny nastrój został zastąpiony klimatem i brzmieniem lat 80. Zespół na pewno jest tu już bardziej zgrany, niż w nagraniach z "We Want Miles". Nie jest to może aż porywające granie, ale i tak fantastyczne. Równie ciekawie wypadają "It Gets Better" i tytułowy "Star People", a zarazem bardzo zaskakująco, bo to archetypowe, dwunstotaktowe bluesy w wolnym tempie. W pierwszym z nich zachwycają partie Scofielda, w drugim - Davisa i Evansa, którzy na swoich instrumentach doskonale naśladują bluesowy sposób gry na gitarze, oraz Sterna, który w przeciwieństwie do Scofielda gra bluesa w bardziej rockowym stylu. Niestety, dwa ostatnie kawałki zaniżają poziom. "U'N'I" i "Star on Cicely" to przykłady bardziej komercyjnego podejścia do grania. Nie są może tak okropne, jak tytułowy kawałek z "The Man with the Horn" lub późniejsze dokonania Davisa, ale i niczym nie zachwycają. Na ich nieobecności album tylko by zyskał, zwłaszcza że jest bardzo, jak na tamte czasy, długi (trwa niemal pełną godzinę).

"Star People" jest zdecydowanie najbardziej udanym wydawnictwem Milesa Davisa z okresu po przerwie, choć niepozbawionym wad. Oprócz długości i nierównego poziomu utworów, należy do nich brak jednorodnego brzmienia - w "Speak" jakość jest wręcz bootlegowa. Ogólnie jednak jest zaskakująco dobrze - zwłaszcza na tle późniejszych dokonań trębacza.

W 1981 roku, po ponad pięcioletniej przerwie w swym życiu artystycznym, Miles Davis rozpoczął kompletowanie zespołu do swojego come backu. Z początkowo wieloosobowego bandu wyłoniło się ostatecznie combo, w którego składzie w roli gitarzysty znalazł się wykształcony muzycznie, młody, ale obecny już od kilku lat na scenie (m.in. Blood, Sweat and Tears, zespół Billy’ego Cobhama), Mike Stern.

Co prawda Miles Davis zapraszał już wcześniej do współpracy gitarzystów, w tym choćby Johna McLaughlina, który miał okazję na przełomie lat 70-tych i 80-tych współuczestniczyć w tworzeniu przez Milesa podwalin stylu fusion, jednak dopiero udział Mike Sterna w nagraniach do płyty The Man With the Horn z 1981 oraz serii koncertów w Nowym Jorku oraz Tokio, otworzył nowy rozdział w historii roli gitary w muzyce jazzowej.

Właśnie wynikiem koncertów z roku 1981 jest wydana rok później płyta "We Want Miles", która dokumentuje atmosferę współpracy muzyków w nowym, odmłodzonym składzie.
Niejako osią płyty jest utwór "Jean-Pierre", kompozycja o temacie przywołującym na myśl prostą dziecięcą melodyjkę, stanowiącym tak naprawdę punkt wyjścia dla improwizacji Milesa oraz muzyków zespołu, w tym Mike'a Sterna, którego partia solowa w otwierającej płytę wersji utworu (kompozycja pojawia się na płycie dwukrotnie) należy do dziś do znaków rozpoznawczych stylu gitarzysty. W 1981 roku, po ponad pięcioletniej przerwie w swym życiu artystycznym, Miles Davis rozpoczął kompletowanie zespołu do swojego come backu. Z początkowo wieloosobowego bandu wyłoniło się ostatecznie combo, w którego składzie w roli gitarzysty znalazł się wykształcony muzycznie, młody, ale obecny już od kilku lat na scenie (m.in. Blood, Sweat and Tears, zespół Billy’ego Cobhama), Mike Stern.

Co prawda Miles Davis zapraszał już wcześniej do współpracy gitarzystów, w tym choćby Johna McLaughlina, który miał okazję na przełomie lat 70-tych i 80-tych współuczestniczyć w tworzeniu przez Milesa podwalin stylu fusion, jednak dopiero udział Mike Sterna w nagraniach do płyty The Man With the Horn z 1981 oraz serii koncertów w Nowym Jorku oraz Tokio, otworzył nowy rozdział w historii roli gitary w muzyce jazzowej.

Violinist, composer and filmmaker Tony Conrad started his career in New York in the early 1960s. As a member of the Theatre of Eternal Music (a.k.a. the Dream Syndicate) alongside John Cale, La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela and Angus MacLise, he participated in now-legendary and often legendarily loud drone performances with many pieces having no beginning and no end. During a fateful trip to Germany in 1972, Conrad met with avant-rock visionaries Faust and made the very first record to bear his name.

Outside The Dream Syndicate, originally released in Europe only in 1973, is a stunning debut. Two side-long tracks – "The Side Of Man And Womankind" and "The Side Of The Machine" – show just how far Conrad had moved beyond his minimalist peers. Werner Diermaier's repetitive drum beat and Jean-Hervé Peron's stripped-down bassline conjure a tense, ascetic groove, while Conrad's seamless violin, initially so controlled, reveals a surprising adaptability. The music shifts almost on a subliminal level, pushing and pulling to the drone's internal pulse.

It is hard to imagine Conrad's trajectory from downtown Manhattan to a farmhouse in the German countryside that ultimately resulted in Outside The Dream Syndicate, yet no other record captures – so completely and instantly – the intersection of avant-garde and rock forms. Outside The Dream Syndicate remains ahead of and bracingly outside of its time.



Glorious ecstatic hymns exclusively made of violin abrasive drones and freak-out dissonances, accompanied by drums sections and e-guitar bass lines. This intriguing album is now a true classic of contemporary music and progressive rock. This one captures the essence of minimalism music and the energy of rock. To be honest, this album looks like more to Tony Conrad's explorations in experimentation sounds and insistent droning performances than FAUST's hybrid rocking universe. "From The Side Of Man And Womankind" is based on a repetitive, ritual drum pulsation, giving the rhythm for long, monotonous, fuzzy violin drones (played by Tony Conrad); the atmosphere is wonderfully noisy, extreme and transcendent. "From The Side Of The Machines" takes back the same schema of composition but within a more colourful, dynamic flame, the result is completely "physical", throwing the listener into a deep "visceral" meditation. A landmark, epic album!

Krautrock, particularly the more experimental strand, always had an affinity with minimalism; think of Can's metronomic rhythms, Neu!'s single chord excursions and the lengthy, near-formless electronic drones of early Kluster or Tangerine Dream circa Zeit. It's perhaps a little odd that Faust, whose recordings were among the most intricate and complex of the krautrock genre, should have participated in this album, perhaps the ultimate minimalist statement of the era.
Only two members of Faust actually perform on this recording, bassist Jean Herve Peron and drummer Zappi Diemaier. They were one of the era's more muscular and inventive rhythm sections, capable of rocking out but also of playing with great subtlety when the music demanded it. From The Side Of Man And Womankind sees the stone age hooligan stomp of It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl stripped down to the bare minimum; tom tom hi hat tom tom hi hat two note bass line dead on the beat and one note drone on the violin plodding along for 26 glorious, almost static minutes. Zappi occasionally forgets himself and includes a cymbal crash, and there are slight tonal variations in the violin drone, but it's about as basic as you can get and utterly mesmerising into the bargain. The boys from Faust get to cut loose, relatively speaking, on From The Side Of The Machines; tom toms played with mallets, cymbal crashes and at least 4 notes on the bass, the whole thing sounding like a fragment from Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun or a similar psychedelic journey looped and repeated ad infinitum, with the Tony Conrad's single note drone floating in space as always. The musicians manage to create an enormous amount with almost no resources whatsoever, and they manage to make an eerily uplifting sound although it sounds like they're straining to avoid any form of self expression at all.

The original album contained just those two mighty slabs of noise, but the reissue includes some bonus items. Two short pieces open disc 2; The Pyre Of Angus Was In is presumably a reference to Conrad's contemporary (and briefly member of The Velvet Underground) Angus Macalise and has a similar groove to From The Side Of The Machines, with Jean Herve Peron getting quite melodic on his bass. The Death Of The Composers sounds like an alternate take of the same piece, with a bit more psychedelic grooving from the rhythm section. From The Side Of Woman And Mankind brings proceedings to a close, and it's basically From The Side Of Man And Womankind taken at a slightly faster tempo. Peron's bass occasionally slips out of sync with the drums and there's a touch more variety in Conrad's bowing technique; if you've been paying attention and you've listened this far, it makes an enormous difference.

If you like the post rock of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mt Zion, John Cale's viola contributions to the Velvet Underground, the hypnotic grooves of early Can, the academic minimalism of Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Philip Glass, the side long drones of Soft Machine Third or pounding rhythms of Faust then this is essential listening. If you're not into minimalism it might just make a convert of you. An emphatic 5 stars.

4.5 stars. What a week I just had listening to this album and ONE SHOT's latest "111" both top ten albums for 2023 in my little world. UNIVERS ZERO continue to show that they take a back seat to no band when it comes to serious, complex and adventerous music. One of my favourite t-shirts is a "Heresie" one I own and that is a top five studio album for me by this band along with "Uzed", "Heatwave", "Phosphorescent Dreams" and this one "Lueur". Throw in "Relaps" and "Crawling Wind" and all of these are in my best of Avant list. Love this band and thankyou Daniel Denis for carrying on in 2023 some 9 years after "Phosphorescent Dreams".
It's been nine years but this four piece were all on that 2014 record. The keyboardist and bass player from that album have been replaced by Daniel and his Son Nicolas who plays bass here, adds some percussion and sings on one track while Dad besides his incredible drum works plays all keyboards. This is different though than "Phosphorescent Dreams". That album was so melancholic with high end stuff throughout. Honestly the guitar on both albums is minimal to say the least. It's those dark sections on "Lueur" that give a different vibe here, plus to my ears it's like Daniel has included things from various past records, like tying a bow on his band here.

I thought of "Implosion"more than "Phosphorescent Dreams" while listening to this. What I love about "Implosion" are those short dark pieces where it feels like you are being taken to somewhere that you don't want to go. Creepy with suspense and three tracks from that album that are like that are "Oozing", "Mirrors" and "Bactieria" while on "Lueur" it's "Migration Vers Le Bas", "Axe 117" and "Mister Chung". Then there's those classical tunes that bounce that really turn me off and "Implosion" has those while "Lueur" gets close to crossing that line but doesn't and "Phosphorescent Dreams" isn't even close thankfully.

After opening with "Migration Vers Le Bas" and feeling like I'm on this slow moving train to my worst nightmare we get the vocal track "Sfumato(Part 1)" and on my initial spins I'm thinking this could fit on John Greaves' "Songs" record. This is a 9 1/2 minute track with floating organ and the lyrics are repeated twice with a reserved voice but in between some powerful stuff. Classic UZ at 5 minutes as it turns haunting with piano and atmosphere. Dark is the word. "Cloportes" is that tune getting close to that bouncy, classical style we also get clarinet here. I like that it changes to more of a serious style with the light sound returning late.

"Rolling Eyes" is a feel good piece of music with guitar, bass, steady beats and keyboards. "Axe 117" like the opener is a dark trip bringing ART ZOYD to mind. It's quite unsettling around 2 minutes. "Sfumato(Part 2)" is a top five with those three short "Implosion"-like tunes and the closer. This is powerful and dark. How good is the drumming 4 minutes in with electric piano and atmosphere. The next track "Wavering" is another highlight. Again dark and in no hurry. Classic UZ 1 1/2 minutes in. So good. "Mister Chung" is slow moving and haunting. "Coda" is an outstanding closer but only 2 minutes long, still the drums and bass shine. Yeah those Denis boys are talented.

This is dedicated to Daniel's daughter Julia who is pictured playing Dad's drums in this package. Speaking of the package, the cover art, back cover and inside has this glossy splatter-like stuff on it. No difference in the texture when you feel it but it's unique. Like the circular swirls of shiny on the front cover. I'm just so happy with this one and the latest ONE SHOT, my kind of music folks.

After opening with "Migration Vers Le Bas" and feeling like I'm on this slow moving train to my worst nightmare we get the vocal track "Sfumato(Part 1)" and on my initial spins I'm thinking this could fit on John Greaves' "Songs" record. This is a 9 1/2 minute track with floating organ and the lyrics are repeated twice with a reserved voice but in between some powerful stuff. Classic UZ at 5 minutes as it turns haunting with piano and atmosphere. Dark is the word. "Cloportes" is that tune getting close to that bouncy, classical style we also get clarinet here. I like that it changes to more of a serious style with the light sound returning late.

"Rolling Eyes" is a feel good piece of music with guitar, bass, steady beats and keyboards. "Axe 117" like the opener is a dark trip bringing ART ZOYD to mind. It's quite unsettling around 2 minutes. "Sfumato(Part 2)" is a top five with those three short "Implosion"-like tunes and the closer. This is powerful and dark. How good is the drumming 4 minutes in with electric piano and atmosphere. The next track "Wavering" is another highlight. Again dark and in no hurry. Classic UZ 1 1/2 minutes in. So good. "Mister Chung" is slow moving and haunting. "Coda" is an outstanding closer but only 2 minutes long, still the drums and bass shine. Yeah those Denis boys are talented.

This is dedicated to Daniel's daughter Julia who is pictured playing Dad's drums in this package. Speaking of the package, the cover art, back cover and inside has this glossy splatter-like stuff on it. No difference in the texture when you feel it but it's unique. Like the circular swirls of shiny on the front cover. I'm just so happy with this one and the latest ONE SHOT, my kind of music folks.
