...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...
..::OPIS::.. Piaty duży album 2025 hiszpańskiego Balmog. Eksperymentalny black metal odlatujący momentami w obszary psychodelicznego rocka, post-punka i tradycyjnego metalu. Od Bathory, Ved Buens Ende aż po Pink Floyd. Laio means lament in Galizian a title that perfectly defines the intention behind Balmog's fifth studio album. We are facing what is probably the most mature and elaborate album of the band's career, a work made from spontaneousness and viscerally but also from the experience acquired over years, in Laio you can feel the beating of a heart spitting blood and a scream from the depths of Balmog's soul, the virginity and violence of the first albums with the personality and eclecticism of EVE. From a conceptual point of view, Laio is about how we can be content with being simple pieces of molded mud or how we can shine like the explosion of a dying star, about how we can escape the ways of divinity, ways that can be dark and manipulative. Laio is a cry for independence and rebellion against the divine. Musically, we are faced with a work that walks between the entire tradition of rock and metal under the unstoppable blade of black metal. A path that wanders between Pink Floyd, Ved Buens Ende or Bathory and Mayhem, a path that will be familiar to many listeners but always with the unmistakable sign of Balmog marked with fire. This fifth album is an album based on a balance between maturity and impetuousness, this fifth album is the quintessence of Balmog in its purest. Apart from being a generally well-conceived idea, black metal is also an excellently executed idea, evidenced by thousands if not tens of thousands of bands in existence. Bands coming from all four corners of the world, bringing their own cultural identities to the table and letting them shine through their music. Obviously, black metal being the subject, “shine” is maybe a bit misleading, but you get the idea. All this makes life much easier for us reviewers, because you can pick any place on Earth, and you’ll find something interesting. Like our guests today, for example. Coming from the town of Soutomaior in the Spanish province of Galicia, Balmog is an undoubtedly interesting band, and also a very experienced one. With a career pushing on two decades, the band has been constantly releasing quality stuff and in good quantity too. Admittedly, I’ve been a fan of the band ever since I discovered them around the release of their second album Svmma Fide some ten years ago. Trying to avoid here the old circular logic of “I love them because they’re great, and they’re great because I love them”, the feeling is that Balmog showed constant growth with every subsequent release, culminating with their fourth album Eve from 2021 and the Pillars of Salt/Covenants of Salt EPs. So imagine my complete lack of surprise that the band would surpass the ridiculously high expectations by releasing an absolute gem with their fifth album Laio, out now on War Anthem Records, a German label seemingly so specialized in releasing gems they should consider opening a jewelry store also. Anyway, Laio. Incidentally and purely accidentally, laio means lament in Galician, so after last week’s Lament from the Polish band Martwa Aura, we find ourselves on the opposite side of Europe, perambulating again on the path of laments. Thematically, the album continues with the band’s exploration of the esoteric nature of the philosophy of religion and the endless conflict of faith and reason, or in the words of the band themselves: “From a conceptual point of view, Laio is about how we can be content with being simple pieces of molded mud or how we can shine like the explosion of a dying star, about how we can escape the ways of divinity, ways that can be dark and manipulative. Laio is a cry for independence and rebellion against the divine. ” This translates very well into the album’s overall sound, which is as varied as they come. Using black metal only as a starting point, the band effortlessly apply different approaches in songwriting, thus creating something that will surely stand out in this year’s slew of great releases. In practice, the two main strains permeating Laio that we should mention are, firstly, the subtle psychedelic touches, and the other being the gothic rock leanings, all strewn across the album’s slim thirty-nine minutes. Funnily enough, the one band that springs to mind with these variables is the unsurpassable Blue Öyster Cult, and we wouldn’t be far off with that comparison. Naturally, Balmog’s approach is considerably heavier, prime example being the first single “Mud to Gold” which opens in a familiar way with a smotheringly fast riff, but as it progresses the song opens up to all of the aforementioned influences achieving the sonic divinity, while fighting the religious one. The album becomes more and more off-beat as songs like “Tongue in Pieces” and “Like God Who Knows” establish themselves by allowing new growth upon the old stones. Roots sprouting through the cracks bring Balc’s vocals to the forefront, and his emotional delivery really brings home the band’s message of rebellion and independence. Short atmospheric interlude “Ortus Umbra” leads us into the second part of the album, with “Mashalam” being the catchiest of the bunch. Turning the eye of the void towards us, the band light up the fire of unknown origin and outright rock for five minutes straight, really bringing home those BÖC comparisons. And just when we thought we were out, they pull us back in the clutches of black metal with the majestic “The Silence of the Trumpets”, which picks up the pace even further, true to the genre’s traits. While keeping some of the rocking aspects of the preceding song, this rough beast stalks us from the deep shadows, its hour come round at last, slouching toward Bethlehem to be born. “Getsemaní”, pushing on almost nine minutes, is one of those slow-burning monsters of a song, and what we would colloquially call a perfect closer. A steady, menacing intro accentuated by heavy bass draws us under the olive trees, burning with treachery and false promises of a kingdom come. The song never picks up any real speed, but keeps grinding our bones to the ground as the snakes of god slither over them, a paradise lost in tragedy. Again the tortured vocals make for the main driver behind the song, but really the whole band just burns through for us in what is one of the best songs in recent memory. In the end, this world really needs more ideas, and fewer ideologies. Balmog is here to help us with that transition by releasing an album that is brimming with musical ideas, but also has a strong lyrical message attached to it. The diversity of styles and talent on display are a recommendation in itself, and as the band roams freely between the genres, limiting themselves was never an option. A true work of art. Sandały Mariana to czysty punk rock w najprawdziwszej polskiej formie. Każda krzywa akcja, która miała zostać zaliczona – została zaliczona, a rzeczywiste miejsca i zdarzenia, latami będą inspirować do epickich historii filmowych o dragach, alkoholu, seksie, upadku i wyniszczeniu. Since 1981, singer/guitarist CHARLY STEINHAUER and drummer AXEL BLAHA have been active in various formations in Würzburg, Lower Franconia. In the beginning, however, the group names and other members are constantly changing, so it is only in February 1986 that you can speak of a real band and rename yourself to PARADOX. In May 1987 they went into the studio with producer KALLE TRAPP (BLIND GUARDIAN/SAXON) to record their debut album. "PRODUCT OF IMAGINATION" was released in October 1987 and quickly earned the band an excellent reputation as the best metal newcomer from Germany. Los Jaivas to legendarny chilijski zespół rockowy założony w 1963 roku w Vina del Mar. Trzon grupy stanowili m.in. Wstawka zawiera piąty album studyjny Los Jaivas. Finntroll to fiński zespół folkmetalowy, założony w Helsinkach w 1997. Zespół wykonuje skoczną, dynamiczną muzykę, łączącą elementy black metalu i fińskiej polki zwanej humppa. Po nagraniu dema do zespołu dołączyli Samu Ruotsalainen (z Barathrum i Rapture), Samuli Ponsimaa, Henri Sorvali (z Moonsorrow) i Sami Uusitalo. Zespół początkowo eksperymentował z synth popem, new wave oraz new romantic, zmierzając później do takich gatunków jak m.in. art pop, art rock i post-rock. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...
..::OPIS::.. JL The peak of achievement from this uber-talented band from München, Bundesrepublik Deutschland: a 94-minute of finely polished music. Just remember that there was at least another 94 minutes of excess music from these recording sessions that was left on the cutting room floor or studio shelves gathering dust until someone saw fit to dust them off and publish them on two albums, released in 1999 and 2002, respectively. LP 1 (46:07): 1. "L.S.B." (17:37) very much like some evolved Big Band jazz--taking Don Ellis a bit further in terms of incorporating elements of avant/free jazz and electronics, but also quite a bit more reigned in in terms of the use of odd time signatures. Still, the song is quite entertaining for its multiple sax-connected multiple motifs covering a range of styles and tempos. There are a lot of elements of blues-rock at the core of a lot of this music (one can still hear the band that did Wake Up! just two years before). I really like the KINGSTON WALL-like vocal motif in the last third of the song. (31.75/35) 2. "When I'm Sleeping" (4:04) sounds like THE ROLLING STONES if they tried covering PETER HAMMILL song as well as a smooth Motown tune for the chorus and instrumental section. Hennse Hering's old-time saloon-like piano play in the background is a delight, as is Stephen Wishen's bass JAMES JAMERSON-like play and the sax work. I don't know why, but the recording of the drums is rather poor. This may be my favorite vocal performance from Moran. (9/10) 3. "Tsajama" (9:23) a great guitar and flute intro leads into an awesome motif with heavy organ and low bass notes weighing things down beneath the flute, guitars, and smoothly-drawn lines coming from the full horn section. Awesome in a Brian Auger/Eumir Deodato kind of way. Remigius Drechsler leads the way with his searing guitar play in the second and third minutes before Hennse's Hammond and the orgasmically-smooth horn section join in to double and back him. Such a great groove! In the second half of the sixth minute the horns, Hammond, and guitars back off and Moran enters in a singing capacity, using Japanese as his language. Interesting. Then he runs off into some poorly-synched scatting in the seventh minute before returning to leading the smoother, multi-channel melody in Japanese in the eighth. But then the band ramps up the pace and breadth of sound dynamics with a return of the horn section, inspiring Moran to gallop off with some more interesting horse-like vocalese scatting(?). (19/20) 4. "Black Cards" (9:38) a gentle weave of organ and electric guitar arpeggi opens this before flute, hand drums, and a second guitar join in. At the one-minute mark the bass jumps on board, ushering the band into a full blues-rock sound palette over which Moran turns back to his Mick Jagger voice for another vocal performance that reminds me of Mick singing his Slow Horses theme song. A return to the opening theme at the end of the third minute allows for a kind of 30-second reset from which they emerge with a VAN MORRISON "Moondance"-like motif over which Hennse solos on his Wurlitzer-sounding organ. This is a great, extended instrumental section with some gorgeous and dynamic flute soloing throughout. At the end we return to the blues swing theme for Moran to finish things off with his Moves Like Jagger. (18/20) 5. "Where Have You Been" (5:35) a gorgeous folk-rock song with one of Moran's most moving and melodic vocal performances. Powerful. Incredible flute solo in the "C" part: heart-wrenching. I know that Moran (and maybe his bandmates) had a very strong moral compass. We are so blessed to have the legacy of their passion and courage. (9.5/10) Disc One earns itself a five star rating. LP 2 (48:09): 6. "A Huchen 55" (9:19) opens with mutliple flutes winding and wending their way through a rondo weave for two minutes before giving way to a faded in psychedelic blues-rock jam (that was already in progress). Hammond organ takes the first solo over the bass, drums, and guitar support. At the three-minute mark, a panoply of horns join in, each playing their own melody line but securing their comraderie through mutually-respective pauses and breaks. The music coming from the rhythm section beneath kind of hits a "I'm a Man" pulse-and-let-off pattern as the horns continue their fascinating and almost humorous interplay. In the seventh minute, electric guitar and Hammond start to inject their own flourishes and melodic ideas. By the eighth minute the horn players are starting to tire--and eventually peter out for a full minute or more while the Hammond and sassy electric guitar share a quirky little conversation of quips and epithets. At the end of the ninth minute, then, the bluesy jazz music is fadeout (the same way it came in) replaced by the flute weave that opened the song. (18/20) 7. "Huchen 55, B" (14:32) opening with the flute weave from the previous song bleeding over, a new already-in- progress R&B jam is faded in. The James Jamerson-like bass play that drives the music is once again emitting waves of groovy Motown sound, but this soon fades out to be replaced by Moran's solo flute play. He sounds so much as if he's trying to imitate the breathy play of maestro Jean-Pierre Rampal. Jazz guitars, trumpet, Hammond, each take their turn joining in beneath Moran's increasingly-avat garde flute stylings. In the seventh minute trumpeter Jimmy Polivka tries usurping the lead from Moran, but it is not that easy: Moran is riding along on pure inspiration. So Jimmy gives up. Hennse and Remigius each take their own turns, trying to nudge Moran out, but Herr Hering only seems to get stronger--until the 9:00 mark: then he gives way, sits back and lets the music unfold without him. The band seem to rise to the occasion with a JEFFERSON AIRPLANE-like creativity: slowly, carefully, deliberately. Hennse's excited Hammond is kept at bay via repressed volume, which allows the horns to have their time. In the twelfth minute Remigius steps to the fore and lays out one awesome blues-rock solo. The band is really into the jam here: fully entrained with everyone clicking--expelling their full creative juices. Awesome! Despite its looseness and lack of plan or developmental structure, this song plays out with some infectious power. Moran's multi-flute weave is once again used to bridge this song with the next one. (27/30) 8. "Huchen 55, C" (24:18) What a jam! Wild and crazy: from Moran's lyrics and vocal performance (sounding like a reckless/uninhibited Mick Jagger channeling PETER HAMMILL through DAMO SUZUKI) to the reckless abandon with which everyone blasts and grooves out their passion. I mean, it feels as if everyone, all at once, is given the total green light to play whatever they feel inspired to play. This makes for some very creative and memorable solos--especially from the horn players (the multitude of saxes are of special note), percussionist, and Hennse's Hammond organ. Definitely Krautrock. Definitely hypnotic in a "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys"-kind of way--a sound that would also seem to indicate the use of mind altering substances. The song's final three minutes are particularly entertaining for the frenetic yet-respectful free-for-all that gradually peters out, making way for yet another reprise of Moran's multi-flute weave. (45.5/50) Disc Two earns itself a 4.5/5 star rating. Total Time: 94:16 A-/five stars; a minor masterpiece of wonderfully-creative First Wave Jazz-Rock Fusion. One can definitely trace the influences and inspirations for each song on several levels but in the end the boys have achieved a mastery of their instruments and goals, enabling them to merge admirably their Krautrock influences with the Blues-Rock and Jazz- Rock Fusion trends they've been hearing. As with every other reviewer I've read, it's too bad this band didn't stay together. With regards to the controversy of whether or not this album (or band) deserves to belong to the Jazz-Rock Fusion sub-genre, I will only say that over the course of the band's three album evolution it has definitely flowed toward Jazz-Rock (though it has also picked up a strong Krautrock foundation as well). This is 1972! Jazz-Rock Fusion was still in it's childhood! The dominant styles and sounds were still as-yet undecided. Herbie Hancock and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin were still evolving! Rapidly! Many bands like Out Of Focus were offering up a wide range of their own personal interpretations--which is one of the most exciting and refreshing aspects of J-R F's "First Wave." ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...
..::OPIS::.. JL The peak of achievement from this uber-talented band from München, Bundesrepublik Deutschland: a 94-minute of finely polished music. Just remember that there was at least another 94 minutes of excess music from these recording sessions that was left on the cutting room floor or studio shelves gathering dust until someone saw fit to dust them off and publish them on two albums, released in 1999 and 2002, respectively. ..::OPIS::.. This is the companion to the East Village Sessions CD. After I started with the live album released in 2001, it's really nice to actually see the band in action. They've gone as analog as possible in this digital age and the results are excellent. I love all the digital frills that can occur these days in progressive music, but they have really dug down to the acoustic roots. The guitar and bass are electric, of course, but with minimal effects and the basic top quality musicianship really shines through. Being such a synthesizer fan, I can say those forms of keyboard electronics are not missed thanks to the vibe work of Benoit Moerlin. I really like the way Bon Lozaga often does licks sounding like Allan Holdsworth, who was actually a guest on their first album, still has his own style though. The bassist, Hansford Rowe also has worked with Gong in the past, and is bassically pretty cool. Even more incredible is seeing that Gary Husband, who's worked with Holdsworth, has hooked up with Gongzilla and does the drums on this one (great drum solo). Excellent backup also by the percussionist Phil Kester, and the guest guitarist Chuck Garvey, too. Slartibartfast ..::TRACK-LIST::.. Recorded live at the Regent Theatre, Boston, June 27, 2003 1. ..::OPIS::.. "Thanks For Your Hostility" to doskonała mieszanka klasycznego grind'owego brzmienia AGATHOCLES znanego z "Razor Sharp Daggers" czy "Theatric Symbolization Of Life" połączona z surowym crustpunkiem w klimacie ANTI-CIMEX, MOB 47, DOOM. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...
..::OPIS::.. Nowy, duży album Azels Mountain to dalsza eksploracja mrocznych sfer, skupionych wokół wewnętrznych przeżyć i duchowych poszukiwań. W porównaniu z poprzednimi dokonaniami „Echa Krwi” przynoszą wizję dojrzalszą i mocniej zakorzenioną w rodzimej kulturze. Wychodząc poza ramy podziemnego black metalu, album czerpie inspiracje z polskiej muzyki klasycznej, literatury oraz duchowego klimatu wpisanego w narodowe dziedzictwo artystyczne. „Echa krwi” to mieszanka posępnych i zadzierżystych riffów, i tremolo z nastrojowymi, momentami dość rytualnymi rytmami. Na wskroś polski materiał wysmażył ten kwintet, ponury, lodowaty i przesiąknięty narodowym etosem i rządzą krwi. shub niggurath On this new release Azels Mountain continues its descent into darker and more reflective territories, channelling themes of memory, blood, sacrifice and transcendence through a colder, more expansive musical expression shaped by both mystic reflection and the lingering shadows of more recent historical experience. Compared to previous releases, “Echa Krwi” is a more mature and culturally rooted vision. Beyond the foundations of underground black metal, the album draws inspiration from classical Polish music, literature and the spiritual atmosphere woven through the nation’s artistic heritage. Echoes of melancholy, longing, pride, and existential struggle permeate the compositions, giving the record a distinctly Polish character. The result is an album that channels the spirit of forgotten landscapes, ancestral memory, and the restless soul embedded within Polish culture itself, transforming “Echa Krwi” into something both deeply personal and timeless. ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1.
