'Afterimages' to 8 utworów,dla których inspiracją była moja Babcia.
Targany różnymi wspomnieniami postanowiłem przełożyć je na dźwięki, by
oddały emocje towarzyszące mi za każdym razem, kiedy spędzałem z Nią
czas. To także próba ujarzmienia skrywanej złości, melancholii i
ogromnego smutku spowodowanych odejściem kogoś bliskiego.

Pepe.

W warstwie muzycznej dominują brytyjskie brzmienia spod znaku Mount Kimbie, Actress, czy Gold Panda. Nagrania terenowe mieszają się z samplami i żywymi instrumentami tworząc bogaty i emocjonalny kolaż lo-fi elektroniki. Gościnnie na płycie udziela się runforrest – jeden z najciekawszych młodych głosów w Polsce, oraz Lena Osińska – obdarzona niezwykle zmysłowym głosem autorka tekstów i wokalistka zespołu SONAR.

Pepe. nagrywa i tworzy nostalgiczne utwory w klimatach lo-fi. Wychodzi poza ramy własnej wyobraźni, grzebiąc w dźwiękach każdego bliskiego mu gatunku: rapu, house, post-dubstep, UK garage; czerpie też inspirację z nagrań terenowych. Niezapomniane live-acty w klubach, na imprezach z cyklu Sofar Sounds (Kraków 2017, Odense 2018) czy w radiowej Czwórce (2017) pozwoliły zagościć Pepe. na wielu letnich imprezach i festiwalach. W 2018 roku zagrał m.in. na Open’er Festival (występ na Firestone Stage), World Wide Warsaw (obok Coma Truise’a), Late Summer Festival czy festiwalu Enea Spring Break.

W 2019 roku Pepe. został nominowany w konkursie Nagród Klubowych ŁOWCY w kategorii Producent/Artysta (House/Elektronika/Techno), rok później Radio Kampus wyróżniło go umieszczeniem na liście „Tak Brzmi 2020”.

Reaching beyond his own imagination, he is dabbing in the sounds of every genre close to him: rap, house, post-dubstep, UK garage; He also draws inspiration from field recordings. Recent years brought in Pepe's collaboration with multiple artists like Rasmentalism (remix of "Lipsync" with Taco Hemingway), Sonar, Flirtini ("Places Without Things” EP, “Heartbreaks & Promises” vol. 3 and 4), Kamil Pivot and Himalaya Collective (The “Nebula” album was released in 2020 by U Know Me Records).

“Afterimages" consists of 8 songs inspired by my Grandma. Torn by various memories, I decided to put them into sounds to reflect the emotions that accompanied me every time I'd spend time with her. It is also an attempt to tame the hidden anger, the melancholy and the sadness caused by the passing of a loved one.

The musical layer is dominated by British sounds like Mount Kimbie, Actress or Gold Panda. Field recordings are mixed with samples and live instruments, creating a rich and emotional collage of lo-fi electronics. Guest performers on the record are: runforrest - one of the most interesting young voices in Poland, and Lena Osińska - songwriter and vocalist of the SONAR band with her amazingly sensual voice.

Mix and mastering was made by Paweł Bartnik (sound engineer and heavyweight.pro studio owner), album cover was designed by Beata BARRAKUZ Śliwińska - the artwork is a collage of Grandma's photos from Pepe's family archives. The videoclip “Fade” was produced by Mateusz Wołoczko.

The publisher, U Know Me Records, is an independent record label celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Album “Afterimages” appears on digital and special CD version limited to 200 pieces.

Sony are to release The 1974 Live Recordings a massive 27-disc box set that features all professionally recorded shows from Bob Dylan and The Band’s 1974 tour.

The box set offers fans 417 previously unreleased live tracks – including 133 recordings newly mixed from 16-track tape, and every single surviving soundboard recording.

In 1974 Dylan toured live for the first time in eight years and reunited with The Band, who since they last performed live together (in 1966) had released six albums and played Woodstock and recorded with Bob (The Basement Tapes, Planet Waves).

Dylan and The Band performed 30 dates in 42 days (often playing two sets per day) and recordings were captured on a stereo soundboard mix, on both quarter-inch tape and cassette. By tour’s end, Asylum Records’ David Geffen had commissioned recordings on multi-track tape, for eventual release on Before the Flood. The 1974 Live Recordings includes it all of these and the shows that were recorded on 16-track tape are newly-mixed for this box set, which comes with with new sleeve notes by Elizabeth Nelson.

Piotr Mełech i Wojtek Kurek tworzą duet od ponad 7 lat. Zagrali razem dziesiątki koncertów. Debiutowali albumem 'Split Here' (Antenna Non Grata), który nawiązywał formą do około jazzowych korzeni i free improv.

Ich drugi album 'Walk Thru' eksploruje transowe, motoryczne rytmy i zapętlone melodie o orientalnej prowieniencji. Razem tworzą zwartą, pędzącą do przodu tkankę o ugruntowanej i wyraźnej strukturze. Czerpią z tradycji i muzyki improwizowanej.

Tym bardziej cieszy tegoroczna premiera ich drugiej płyty Walk Thru, na której panowie porzucają wariacki free jazz z bluesowymi naleciałościami, jaki zaprezentowali na wydanym pięć lat temu Split Here. Tym razem obaj rzucają się w odmęty ciepłej, melodyjnej kameralistyki.

Mam wielkie zaufanie do wszystkiego, w co artystycznie angażuje się Piotr Mełech – czy to Polski Piach, czy trio Cukier, czy dawne Enterout Trio, czy nawet jego eksperymenty z muzyką żydowską sprzed kilku lat. To obok Pawła Szamburskiego i Michała Górczyńskiego jeden z najbardziej wszechstronnych polskich klarnecistów. Na Walk Thru ta wszechstronność także daje o sobie znać, ponieważ muzyczny język duetu zmienił się trochę. Kurek ostatnio angażował się w dużo bardziej eksperymentalne przedsięwzięcia, takie jak duet z sonorystycznie improwizującym Pawłem Doskoczem czy brzmiący wręcz destrukcyjnie projekt Duopol współtworzony z Hubertem Kostkiewiczem (trzymam kciuki za wydanie płyty!). Nowy album jest natomiast chwilą oddechu, ma dużo bardziej transowy charakter,czerpie z tradycji orientalnych oraz afrykańskich.

Podczas koncertu duetu, który odbył się 2 lutego w krakowskim Betelu, Mełech opowiedział, że wszystkie te improwizowane kompozycje powstały na skali zbliżonej do etiopskiej. Wyjaśnia to pojawiające się często skojarzenia z pustynną i nieco medytacyjną atmosferą, w jakiej album ten jest utrzymany. Na przykład Antique Shop odznacza się zmysłową, gorącą melodią klarnetu poprzecinaną precyzyjnymi, krótkimi dźwiękami perkusji Kurka, które układają się w podrygujący, quasi-bliskowschodni rytm. Południowy trans wybrzmiewa najpełniej w University, w którym niewzruszony Mełech, uparcie powtarzający przez pięć minut spokojny motyw, kontrastuje z kotłującymi się ciężko bębnami. Żadnego sonoryzmu, żadnego radykalnego free jazzu – kontemplacja, przestrzeń i ten ciepły, falujący klimat. Wyjątkowo wybija się z niego Mushroom Field – ten numer ma najbardziej figlarny i nieuporządkowany charakter, więc można snuć domysły, jakie to grzyby rosną na tytułowym polu…

Szczególnym atutem Walk Thru jest wyśmienita produkcja. Tak klarownego i zniuansowanego brzmienia nie słyszałem na polskiej płycie od dawna. Doskonale słychać przeróżne faktury, jakie wykorzystuje Kurek. Gdy tylko na bębny narzucona jest wytłumiająca płachta, różnicę słyszymy natychmiast. Uderzenia o drewniane elementy są ostre, dźwięczne, wybrzmiewają krótkim echem. Jeśli słuchamy płyty na sprzęcie hi-fi, to już od pierwszych uderzeń Kurka w Gift Shop przez cały pokój zaczyna przechodzić drżenie, do którego dołącza później szlachetny, głęboki klarnet basowy, na którym Mełech gra długie, masujące zwoje mózgowe, posuwiste frazy. Uczta nawet dla najbardziej wymagającego audiofila.

Ciekawostką jest, że Walk Thru układa się w pewną uroczą koncepcję. Tytuł płyty to z angielskiego „wycieczka” lub „przechadzka”, „spacer”, a tytuły utworów to przecież konkretne miejsca, jakie znajdziemy na mapie każdego miasta: biblioteka (Library), sklep z antykami (Antique Shop), rynek miejski (Main Square) czy nawet biuro podatkowe (Tax Office). W tych utworach, których tytuły oznaczają raczej zamknięte pomieszczenia niż otwarte przestrzenie, Kurek co jakiś czas uderza w coś, co przypomina sklepowy dzwonek do drzwi, zupełnie jakby do miejsc tych wchodzili ciągle kolejni petenci.

Trudno było spodziewać się po tej dwójce artystycznej porażki. Album, wydany tym razem w barwach Gusstaffa, przyniósł jeszcze nowsze oblicze muzycznych zainteresowań obu instrumentalistów. Nie dość, że słychać ich tu wyśmienicie, to słychać także, że obaj czują się ze sobą bardzo komfortowo. Choć podobnych płyt pewnie powstaje wiele, to akurat po właśnie tę warto sięgnąć, by w te wciąż jeszcze chłodne miesiące dawkować sobie podmuchy ciepłego, południowego powietrza, i zanurzyć się w dojrzałym, melancholijnym transie.

Minimalizm formy zawsze miał moim zdaniem większą siłę niż rozbuchane produkcje. Szczególnie jeśli chodzi o muzykę. Jeśli ktoś miałby co do tego wątpliwości, polecam sięgnąć po nowy album duetu Piotr Mełech i Wojciech Kurek. Nasuwa się pytanie – co można wyczarować tylko przy użyciu klarnetu (w tym przypadku basowego i sopranowego) oraz perkusji? Ano bardzo dużo. Ten album tego dowodzi.

Choć to ich drugi wspólny album, to każdy z panów może pochwalić się naprawdę bogatym doświadczeniem i dorobkiem artystycznym. Piotr Mełech, oprócz gry na klarnecie i współpracy z wieloma projektami (min. Polski Piach), znany jest również jako artysta wizualny. Nagrał ponad 20 albumów. Wojciech Kurek to perkusista, improwizator jak również autor muzyki teatralnej. Na swoim koncie ma ponad 30 albumów wydanych zarówno w kraju jak i zagranicą. Razem grają od ponad siedmiu lat. Walk Thru jest albumem, na którym swobodnie łączą swoje fascynacje muzyczną awangardą oraz sceną free improv. Ograniczając się jednak do brzmienia tylko dwóch instrumentów postawili sobie dość ambitne zadanie. I podołali mu z pełnym sukcesem.

Każda z dziesięciu kompozycji, którą tu znajdziemy to osobny dźwiękowy kolaż zbudowany z minimalistycznych dźwiękowych pętli oraz trzymających wszystko w ryzach, transowych rytmów. Choć dużo w tej muzyce swobody i przestrzeni to równocześnie towarzyszy jej specyficzna dyscyplina, której trzymają się muzycy. W melodiach wyraźnie da się też odczuć nieco orientalnego, nieco klezmerskiego ducha. Ciekawym jest też to, że słuchając tego albumu jakby automatycznie można odnieść wrażenie, że obcujemy raczej z muzyką graną na żywo niż z płyty. Być może wpływ na to ma fakt, że płyta nagrana została w sali koncertowej.

Jaka jest jeszcze muzyka zawarta na tym krążku? Na pewno żywa, kolorowa, umykająca łatwym określeniom i bardzo wciągająca. Dodatkowo warto odnotować również oprawę graficzną albumu, która, choć równie minimalistyczna, to ładnie komponuje się z jego bogatą zawartością.

„Romeo i Julia żyją” to czwarte wcielenie Arkadiusza Jakubika poza macierzystym Dr. Misio (było "40 przebojów" duetu Jakubik/Deriglasoff do tekstów Świetlickiego i Vargi (2016); był solowy "Szatan na Kabatach" (2018); był też "Wodzirej" w klimacie disco polo stworzony wespół z Deriglasoffem do filmu "Wesele 2" Wojtka Smarzowskiego (2021). Teraz jest konceptualna opowieść o miłości, zdradzie, tęsknocie i konsekwencjach codziennych decyzji. Tym razem nie przenosimy się na scenę szekspirowskiej tragedii (choć w Weronie też będziemy), a do Piaseczna – gdzieś pod Warszawą – gdzie mieszkają Jan i Krystyna Marzec. To oni są bohaterami tej współczesnej historii, rozpisanej na dziesięć utworów, tworzących razem coś na kształt filmowej fabuły – dramatycznej, przejmującej i bardzo prawdziwej.
Jak mówi sam Arek Jakubik: „Romeo i Julia nie muszą być młodzi. Są tacy jak my. Kogo to obchodzi, ile mają naprawdę lat?” – i to właśnie sprawia, że ta płyta rezonuje tak silnie – bo miłość, namiętność i rozczarowanie nie znają wieku. 10 ścieżek spektaklu muzycznego zamkniętego w ramach (również dosłownie - obczajcie sposób wydania fizycznego nośnika) płyty CD i czarnego winylowego krążka.

Jan i Krystyna Marzec - małżeństwo aktorów działających sobie w miejscowym Domu Kultury. Wzięli ślub dość dawno temu na wycieczce w Weronie. Zabrali ze sobą wówczas przyjaciela - bardzo znanego aktora z Warszawy - Cezarego Kota (antagonistę w tej historii). Jak się skończy opowieść o miłosnym trójkącie? Dostaliśmy przedsmak tej opowieści w postaci dwóch teledysków do singli "Werona" i "Sonda uliczna". Pierwszy klip po bożemu - aktorzy, plan, światła, operatorzy, statyści... Drugi - novum: w całości stworzony za pomocą AI. Jeszcze może nie do końca perfekcyjny, ale poczekajmy chwilę... To samo było przecież jakiś czas temu z generowaną muzyką. A dziś? Jeśli nie ma podpisu, że dany utwór stworzyła sztuczna inteligencja, raczej już trudno się połapać.

18 kwietnia 2025 roku światło dzienne ujrzał nowy album Beirutu - „A Study of Losses”, wydany nakładem Pompeii Records. To jedno z najbardziej ambitnych i introspektywnych dzieł w dorobku Zacha Condona - lidera i twórcy projektu Beirut. Album jest nie tylko muzycznym rozwinięciem dotychczasowego stylu artysty, ale też głęboką refleksją nad tematami przemijania, utraty i pamięci. Album powstał na zamówienie szwedzkiego teatru cyrkowego Kompani Giraff jako ścieżka dźwiękowa do spektaklu inspirowanego powieścią „Verzeichnis einiger Verluste” (pol. Inwentarz niektórych strat) autorstwa Judith Schalansky. To literackie dzieło przedstawia serię zaginionych historii - od zniszczonych dzieł sztuki po zapomniane miejsca i ludzi - co idealnie wpisało się w muzyczną wrażliwość Condona. Siódmy, najnowszy album studyjny Beirutu.

Od samego początku darzyłem szacunkiem i sympatią włoski Sadist. To właśnie między innymi oni nauczyli mnie słuchać muzyki i ją doceniać. Od czasu wydania debiutu Above The Light inaczej już patrzę na death metal – już 32 lata. Na tamte czasy twórczość Włochów była nie byle eksperymentem i znacznie różniła się od typowego, krwistego, śmierdzącego trupem death metalu. Oprócz dzikich wrzasków, histerycznego growlu i zakręconej muzyki czuć było niemalże kosmos, a dźwięki Sadist dryfowały gdzieś pośród planetoid i wykraczały poza przyjęty już, jak myślałem wówczas, schemat.

I nic się nie zmieniło. Sadist to dla mnie cały czas zagadka, ale porywa mnie przy okazji każdej kolejnej płyty. Na Something To Pierce także cały czas coś się dzieje. Nie ma tu nawet minuty, która nudzi. Liczne zmiany tempa, niespodziewane wariacje muzyczne i to brzmienie basu uciekające gdzieś w bok i żyjącego własnym życiem. Bliskowschodnie inklinacje świetnie współbrzmiące z death metalowym sznytem, przeplatane kosmicznymi wstawkami, wyjęte niczym z fantazji Terry’ego Pratchetta, jak choćby w Nove Strade czy w niesamowitym kawałku o jakże wymownym tytule, The Best Part Is The Brain. Czysta magia.

Mimo upływu lat mózg zespołu, Tommy Talamanca, potrafi zaskoczyć nawet i teraz, a jego muzyka wcale się nie starzeje, tylko wchodzi na zupełnie nowe poziomy ludzkiej percepcji. Nadworny wokal Trevora Nadira od czasów genialnego, choć niedocenianego Crust, wciąż ryczy równie mocno, jak prawie 30 lat temu. Reszta to tylko uzupełnienie składu, bo tych dwóch panów nadaje ton i kształt Something To Pierce. Nawet zamykający płytę instrumentalny Resprium to zjawisko samo w sobie. Progresywny death metal to zdecydowanie zbyt ubogie określenie tego, co serwuje nam Sadist. To poplątanie z pomieszaniem, ale w konsekwentny i zamierzony sposób. To uporządkowany chaos od samego początku, aż do ostatniej minuty.

Jestem pewien, że znajdą się sceptycy, którym ta muzyka może nie przypaść do gustu, ale nawet oni muszą stwierdzić, że Sadist, to od lat zjawisko, obok którego nie można przejść obojętnie. Owszem, mieli swoje wzloty, jak w przypadku Sadist i Seasons In Silence, ale też upadki, jak dość miałki w perspektywie całej twórczości Lego. Trzeba im jednak przyznać, że cały czas trzymają fason i nawet w tym dziesiątym w dyskografii albumie słychać zdecydowanie i konsekwencję w obranym kierunku.

Jestem dumny, że to właśnie polska Agonia Records od kilku lat jest ich wydawcą i wbrew przeciwnościom losu znakomicie ich promuje. Nowy album to znakomity moment, żeby zrobić muzyczną retrospekcją Sadist. I tak też uczynię, do czego i Was namawiam.

Sadist właśnie dobił do płyty nr 10. Zważywszy na stylistykę, w jakiej Włosi się poruszają i ile w niej nierozerwalnie trwają jest to bardzo dobry wynik i należą im się szczere gratulacje. Skłamałbym jednak twierdząc, że dziesiątki wyczekiwałem z wielką niecierpliwością, gdyż - tak się jakoś dziwnie i ciekawie składa - poprzedni album "Firescorched" wciąż uważam za stosunkowo nową płytę i dalej nie zdążyłem się nią odpowiednio nasycić. Nadal również uważam, że utwory z tamtego krążka zawierają wiele wspaniałych patentów, bez względu na ich trochę płaską produkcję i straszaka na okładce. Tommy'emu Talamance i Trevorowi Nadirowi (bo to oni teraz tu przewodzą) najwidoczniej w dalszym ciągu pomysły dopisywały, a kolejne zmiany w składzie nie stanowiły żadnego wyzwania, bo ów "Something To Pierce" wydany został tylko trzy lata po dziewiątce. I znów, biorąc pod uwagę styl, w jakim Włosi się obracają, powinien być to tym większy dowód na ile zespół jest pracowity oraz głodny rozwijania swojego progresywnego death metalu.
Nie wspomniałem tylko, że od czasu reaktywacji z 2005 roku, Włochom z Sadist zdarzały się płyty zarówno rewelacyjne, mistrzowsko łączące technikę, progresję i death metal, jak i wyraźnie słabsze, do których kompletnie nie chce się wracać. Do tego drugiego grona niestety dołącza "Something To Pierce", który tuż obok "Hyaena" i "Spellbound" jawi się jako jedna z najmniej interesujących pozycji w dorobku grupy od czasu jej powrotu na scenę. Nie to żeby Włosi nagrali gniota, bo ten nadarzył się już wieki temu i mało kto o nim pamięta, że położył kres kapeli na 4 lata. Źle na "Something..." oczywiście nie jest, od razu słychać kto gra i da się znaleźć charakterystyczne dla Sadist patenty, aczkolwiek o rewelacji również nie ma tutaj mowy. Na dziesiątym albumie tejże włoskiej ekipy znalazło się dużo bajecznej techniki oraz znakomitego, kiczowato-upiornego klimatu, ale zabrakło większości tym numerom wyrazistości. Krążka słucha się jeden, drugi, piąty raz, często towarzyszy mu odczucie z cyklu hmm, gdzieś już to słyszałem (precyzując - na poprzednich albumach), a mnie do głowy wbiły się może z dwa utwory (w dodatku singlowe) oraz kilka losowych motywów rozsianych w pozostałych, które majestatem nawiązują do nadmienianych lepszych płyt.

Żeby nie było, że ja tu tylko jak typowy Polak narzekam, to podkreślę również co mi się na "Something To Pierce" podoba - wszak plusów z lupą nie trzeba się na tym wydawnictwie specjalnie doszukiwać. Świetna jest produkcja, która nareszcie zyskała masywną, tłustą oprawę, a płaski dźwięk z "Firescorched" zanikł całkowicie. Nowa, odmłodzona sekcja rytmiczna w osobach Davide'a Piccolo oraz Giorgia Piva sprawuje się bez zarzutu i udanie kontynuuje styl zaczęty przez poprzedników (znajdą się więc blasty, łamańce i aktywnie pracujący bezprogowy bas). Fajna jest też okładka, przy której widać, że komuś zależało, by wykonać coś co przyciągnie wzrok i nawiązującego do początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Pytanie tylko czy w kontekście atutów krążka, kwestie związane z oprawą graficzną są jakkolwiek istotne. W końcu, głównie temat rozbija się tu o muzykę.

A z tą - jak już mówiłem - jest bardzo różnie. Najlepsze wrażenia w programie "Something To Pierce" wywołują wspomniane "No Feast For Flies" i tytułowiec. To taki Sadist w pigułce, z charakterystyczną techniką, klimatem oraz rzygająco-stękającymi wokalami, a zarazem wydanie Włochów bardziej do ludzi, z silnie zaznaczoną melodią, przejrzystszymi schematami oraz nieco prostszymi riffami (pobrzmiewa w nich duch "Crust"). Generalnie, jest w tych dwóch utworach zaczepność i motywy, które przekładają się na pewną hitonośność. Reszta kawałków już nie wzbudza tak jednoznacznych odczuć. Co prawda, podobać się może "Deprived" ze swoimi orientalnymi dodatkami (i pomimo dziwnego wzdychania na początku) oraz szybszy i z niezłym przełamaniem dynamiki w środku "One Shot Closer", aczkolwiek w nich również znalazło się trochę rozwiązań na skróty, przez które utwór potrafi wygasnąć przedwcześnie - a to ogólny problem "Something To Pierce". Są też średniaki, z których mało co wynika, brzmiących zbyt bezpiecznie jak na ten zespół, pokroju "The Best Part Is The Brain", "Dume Kike", "Kill Devour Dissect" (z wciśniętym na siłę damskim wokalem) czy "The Sun God". Ma się wrażenie, że umieszczono je na krążku, by zawartość materiału nadawała się do określenia go mianem longplaya, a samej treści to tam tyle co mięsa w parówkach.

Z przykrością muszę zatem stwierdzić, że jako wieloletni fan Sadist nie zapałałem miłością do "Something To Pierce". Nie jest to najgorszy krążek Włochów, znalazły się na nim markowe patenty i błyskawicznie słychać kto odpowiada za te kompozycje, ale całości brakuje polotu, znacznie większej ilości ozdobników oraz bardziej wciągającego klimatu. Słuchając "Something..." mam po prostu nieodparte wrażenie, że w moich słuchawkach leci współcześnie brzmiący Sadist, ale w wersji wyraźnie okrojonej.

Trochę Subiektywizmu


Following the well-received "Firescorched" released in 2022, the new album "Something To Pierce" promises to be even more aggressive, both musically and lyrically. The band's tenth outing is a bold combination of technique, aggression and experimentation; in short, "another step towards defining a unique musical style that you can either love... or hate," comments the band's founder, Tommy Talamanca. "Like it or not, nobody sounds like Sadist!"

"Something To Pierce" was recorded, mixed and mastered by Tommy Talamanca at Nadir Music Studios in Genoa, Italy. The cover art was created by Andreas Christanetoff of Armaada Art (Aborted).

Sadist formed in the early nineties in Genoa, northwestern Italy. They were ahead of their time, being one of the first to introduce progressive elements into death metal. He developed his own style, present on albums such as "Above The Light" (1993 debut). After a five-year break (2000-2005), the band returned to the proven formula of epic prog-death with elements of jazz music and Middle Eastern influences.

Sadist has performed alongside cult bands such as Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer and Motorhead. He has also performed at numerous metal festivals, including Wacken, Gods Of Metal and Hellfest. In 2023 alone, he shared the stage with Samael, Pantera, Dark Tranquility and Sepultura; while also working on a new album. Among the band's recent performances are Prog Power Europe and Corpsorate Death Fest, which took place in late 2024.



Sadist has just reached album no. 10. Considering how long the Italians have been inseparably present in it, this is a very good result and they deserve sincere congratulations. However, I would be lying if I said that I was waiting impatiently for this album, because - as it happens, strangely and interestingly - I still consider the previous album "Firescorched" to be a relatively new album and I still haven't had time to get properly saturated with it. I also still think that the songs from that album contain many great patterns, regardless of their somewhat flat production and the crap cover art. Tommy Talamanca and Trevor Nadir (because they are the ones who lead here now) clearly still had ideas, and subsequent changes in the line-up did not pose any decline, because "Something To Pierce" was released only three years after the "Firescorched". Again, considering the style the Italians are known for, this should be the great proof of how hardworking and hungry the band is to develop their progressive death metal.

I didn't mention that since their 2005 reunion, Sadist have had some sensational albums, masterfully combining technique, progression and death metal, as well as some clearly weaker ones, which you don't want to come back to at all. Unfortunately, "Something To Pierce" joins the latter group, which, right next to "Hyaena" and "Spellbound", seems to be one of the least interesting albums in the band's discography since its return to the scene. It's not that the Italians recorded an embarrassing album, because that one happened ages ago and few people remember that it put an end to the band for 4 years. Of course, "Something..." is not bad, you can hear who's playing right away and you can find some of the patterns characteristic of Sadist, although there's no talk of a revelation here either. The tenth album of this Italian band features a lot of fabulous technique and an excellent, kitschy-spooky atmosphere, but most of these tracks lacked expressiveness. You listen to the album once, twice, fifth time, often accompanied by the feeling that I've heard it somewhere before (to be precise - on previous albums), and maybe two songs (of course singles) and a few random motifs scattered throughout the rest, which refer with their majesty to the better albums mentioned above, stuck in my head.

Just so it's not like I'm just complaining like a typical Pole, I'll also emphasize what I like about "Something To Pierce" - after all, you don't have to look for any advantages with a magnifying glass on this release. The production is great, which has finally gained a massive, fatty sound, and the flat sound from "Firescorched" has completely disappeared. The new, rejuvenated rhythm section in the persons of Davide Piccolo and Giorgio Piva performs flawlessly and successfully continues the style started by their predecessors (so there are blast beats, technical twists and an actively working fretless bass). The cover art is also cool, with which you can see that someone wanted to make something that would catch the eye and refer to the early nineties. The only question is whether in the context of the advantages of the album, issues related to the graphic design are at all important. After all, the main topic here is the music.

And with this - as I said - it's not always rosy. The best impressions on the "Something To Pierce" are caused by the aforementioned "No Feast For Flies" and the title track. It's a kind of Sadist in a nutshell, with a characteristic technique, atmosphere and puking-groaning vocals, and at the same time a version of the Italians more to ordinary listeners, with a strongly marked melody, clearer structures and slightly simpler riffs (the spirit of "Crust" resonates in them). Generally, there is a sensible catchiness and motifs in these two songs, which come into a some kind of a prog-death hits. The rest of the songs do not evoke such unambiguous feelings. Okay, one may like "Deprived" with its oriental additions (and despite the strange sighing at the beginning) and the faster one with a good break in dynamics in the middle of "One Shot Closer", although they also found some shortcut solutions, because of which the song can fade out prematurely - and this is the general problem of "Something To Pierce". There are also average ones, which don't really make much sense, sounding too safe for this band, like "The Best Part Is The Brain", "Dume Kike", "Kill Devour Dissect" (with a redundant female vocal) or "The Sun God". You get the impression that they were put on the album so that the content of the material could be called an lp.

I regret to say that as a long-time Sadist fan, but "Something To Pierce" didn't knock me off. It's not the Italians' worst album, it has some trademark patterns and you can hear who's responsible for these compositions right away, but the whole thing lacks power, a lot more ornaments and a more engaging atmosphere. When I listen to "Something..." I simply have the strange impression that the modern-sounding Sadist is playing in my headphones, but in a beginner version.

Żeby nie było, że ja tu tylko jak typowy Polak narzekam, to podkreślę również co mi się na "Something To Pierce" podoba - wszak plusów z lupą nie trzeba się na tym wydawnictwie specjalnie doszukiwać. Świetna jest produkcja, która nareszcie zyskała masywną, tłustą oprawę, a płaski dźwięk z "Firescorched" zanikł całkowicie. Nowa, odmłodzona sekcja rytmiczna w osobach Davide'a Piccolo oraz Giorgia Piva sprawuje się bez zarzutu i udanie kontynuuje styl zaczęty przez poprzedników (znajdą się więc blasty, łamańce i aktywnie pracujący bezprogowy bas). Fajna jest też okładka, przy której widać, że komuś zależało, by wykonać coś co przyciągnie wzrok i nawiązującego do początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Pytanie tylko czy w kontekście atutów krążka, kwestie związane z oprawą graficzną są jakkolwiek istotne. W końcu, głównie temat rozbija się tu o muzykę.

A z tą - jak już mówiłem - jest bardzo różnie. Najlepsze wrażenia w programie "Something To Pierce" wywołują wspomniane "No Feast For Flies" i tytułowiec. To taki Sadist w pigułce, z charakterystyczną techniką, klimatem oraz rzygająco-stękającymi wokalami, a zarazem wydanie Włochów bardziej do ludzi, z silnie zaznaczoną melodią, przejrzystszymi schematami oraz nieco prostszymi riffami (pobrzmiewa w nich duch "Crust"). Generalnie, jest w tych dwóch utworach zaczepność i motywy, które przekładają się na pewną hitonośność. Reszta kawałków już nie wzbudza tak jednoznacznych odczuć. Co prawda, podobać się może "Deprived" ze swoimi orientalnymi dodatkami (i pomimo dziwnego wzdychania na początku) oraz szybszy i z niezłym przełamaniem dynamiki w środku "One Shot Closer", aczkolwiek w nich również znalazło się trochę rozwiązań na skróty, przez które utwór potrafi wygasnąć przedwcześnie - a to ogólny problem "Something To Pierce". Są też średniaki, z których mało co wynika, brzmiących zbyt bezpiecznie jak na ten zespół, pokroju "The Best Part Is The Brain", "Dume Kike", "Kill Devour Dissect" (z wciśniętym na siłę damskim wokalem) czy "The Sun God". Ma się wrażenie, że umieszczono je na krążku, by zawartość materiału nadawała się do określenia go mianem longplaya, a samej treści to tam tyle co mięsa w parówkach.

Z przykrością muszę zatem stwierdzić, że jako wieloletni fan Sadist nie zapałałem miłością do "Something To Pierce". Nie jest to najgorszy krążek Włochów, znalazły się na nim markowe patenty i błyskawicznie słychać kto odpowiada za te kompozycje, ale całości brakuje polotu, znacznie większej ilości ozdobników oraz bardziej wciągającego klimatu. Słuchając "Something..." mam po prostu nieodparte wrażenie, że w moich słuchawkach leci współcześnie brzmiący Sadist, ale w wersji wyraźnie okrojonej.

Trochę Subiektywizmu


Following the well-received "Firescorched" released in 2022, the new album "Something To Pierce" promises to be even more aggressive, both musically and lyrically. The band's tenth outing is a bold combination of technique, aggression and experimentation; in short, "another step towards defining a unique musical style that you can either love... or hate," comments the band's founder, Tommy Talamanca. "Like it or not, nobody sounds like Sadist!"

"Something To Pierce" was recorded, mixed and mastered by Tommy Talamanca at Nadir Music Studios in Genoa, Italy. The cover art was created by Andreas Christanetoff of Armaada Art (Aborted).

Sadist formed in the early nineties in Genoa, northwestern Italy. They were ahead of their time, being one of the first to introduce progressive elements into death metal. He developed his own style, present on albums such as "Above The Light" (1993 debut). After a five-year break (2000-2005), the band returned to the proven formula of epic prog-death with elements of jazz music and Middle Eastern influences.

Sadist has performed alongside cult bands such as Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer and Motorhead. He has also performed at numerous metal festivals, including Wacken, Gods Of Metal and Hellfest. In 2023 alone, he shared the stage with Samael, Pantera, Dark Tranquility and Sepultura; while also working on a new album. Among the band's recent performances are Prog Power Europe and Corpsorate Death Fest, which took place in late 2024.



Sadist has just reached album no. 10. Considering how long the Italians have been inseparably present in it, this is a very good result and they deserve sincere congratulations. However, I would be lying if I said that I was waiting impatiently for this album, because - as it happens, strangely and interestingly - I still consider the previous album "Firescorched" to be a relatively new album and I still haven't had time to get properly saturated with it. I also still think that the songs from that album contain many great patterns, regardless of their somewhat flat production and the crap cover art. Tommy Talamanca and Trevor Nadir (because they are the ones who lead here now) clearly still had ideas, and subsequent changes in the line-up did not pose any decline, because "Something To Pierce" was released only three years after the "Firescorched". Again, considering the style the Italians are known for, this should be the great proof of how hardworking and hungry the band is to develop their progressive death metal.

I didn't mention that since their 2005 reunion, Sadist have had some sensational albums, masterfully combining technique, progression and death metal, as well as some clearly weaker ones, which you don't want to come back to at all. Unfortunately, "Something To Pierce" joins the latter group, which, right next to "Hyaena" and "Spellbound", seems to be one of the least interesting albums in the band's discography since its return to the scene. It's not that the Italians recorded an embarrassing album, because that one happened ages ago and few people remember that it put an end to the band for 4 years. Of course, "Something..." is not bad, you can hear who's playing right away and you can find some of the patterns characteristic of Sadist, although there's no talk of a revelation here either. The tenth album of this Italian band features a lot of fabulous technique and an excellent, kitschy-spooky atmosphere, but most of these tracks lacked expressiveness. You listen to the album once, twice, fifth time, often accompanied by the feeling that I've heard it somewhere before (to be precise - on previous albums), and maybe two songs (of course singles) and a few random motifs scattered throughout the rest, which refer with their majesty to the better albums mentioned above, stuck in my head.

Just so it's not like I'm just complaining like a typical Pole, I'll also emphasize what I like about "Something To Pierce" - after all, you don't have to look for any advantages with a magnifying glass on this release. The production is great, which has finally gained a massive, fatty sound, and the flat sound from "Firescorched" has completely disappeared. The new, rejuvenated rhythm section in the persons of Davide Piccolo and Giorgio Piva performs flawlessly and successfully continues the style started by their predecessors (so there are blast beats, technical twists and an actively working fretless bass). The cover art is also cool, with which you can see that someone wanted to make something that would catch the eye and refer to the early nineties. The only question is whether in the context of the advantages of the album, issues related to the graphic design are at all important. After all, the main topic here is the music.

And with this - as I said - it's not always rosy. The best impressions on the "Something To Pierce" are caused by the aforementioned "No Feast For Flies" and the title track. It's a kind of Sadist in a nutshell, with a characteristic technique, atmosphere and puking-groaning vocals, and at the same time a version of the Italians more to ordinary listeners, with a strongly marked melody, clearer structures and slightly simpler riffs (the spirit of "Crust" resonates in them). Generally, there is a sensible catchiness and motifs in these two songs, which come into a some kind of a prog-death hits. The rest of the songs do not evoke such unambiguous feelings. Okay, one may like "Deprived" with its oriental additions (and despite the strange sighing at the beginning) and the faster one with a good break in dynamics in the middle of "One Shot Closer", although they also found some shortcut solutions, because of which the song can fade out prematurely - and this is the general problem of "Something To Pierce". There are also average ones, which don't really make much sense, sounding too safe for this band, like "The Best Part Is The Brain", "Dume Kike", "Kill Devour Dissect" (with a redundant female vocal) or "The Sun God". You get the impression that they were put on the album so that the content of the material could be called an lp.

I regret to say that as a long-time Sadist fan, but "Something To Pierce" didn't knock me off. It's not the Italians' worst album, it has some trademark patterns and you can hear who's responsible for these compositions right away, but the whole thing lacks power, a lot more ornaments and a more engaging atmosphere. When I listen to "Something..." I simply have the strange impression that the modern-sounding Sadist is playing in my headphones, but in a beginner version.
