Møl to duński zespół blackgaze / post-black metalowy pochodzący z Aarhus w Danii. Grupa została założona w 2012–2013 roku i szybko zyskała uznanie dzięki unikalnemu połączeniu ciężkich riffów i black metalowych wokali z eterycznym, shoegaze’owym brzmieniem, co dało im rozpoznawalny styl w nurcie blackgaze (black metal + shoegaze). Pod koniec stycznia światło dzienne ujrzy debiutancki album Shine. „Debiutancki” w tym przypadku bynajmniej nie znaczy, że odpowiedzialni za niego ludzie to nowicjusze. Wręcz przeciwnie. Jeśli pamiętacie nasz rodzimy Hazael, którego debiut był zresztą przez Dark Descent wznawiany, to wyjaśniam, iż Shine jest nowym tworem powołanym do życia przez Tomka Dobrzenieckiego. Jednocześnie nie jest to w najprostszej linii kontynuacja pomysłów z „Thor”, a rzecz nieco bardziej dojrzała, czy rozwinięta. Owszem, trzon muzyki stanowi tutaj death metal. Polski death metal trzeba zaznaczyć. Jakby nie patrzeć, zespoły pokroju Vader czy Devilyn, że wymienię tylko dwa, które mi się tutaj najmocniej kojarzą, mimo iż czerpały głównie z inspiracji zamorskich, potrafiły wykreować coś własnego i rozpoznawalnego, charakterystycznego dla kraju nad Wisłą. Podobne wibracje mamy w Shine. Te nagrania, tak na dobrą sprawę, brzmią trochę jakby zostały zarejestrowane, a przynajmniej skomponowane, bo pod względem brzmienia jako takiego czuć jednak postęp technologiczny, gdzieś na przełomie lat dziewięćdziesiątych i dwutysięcznych. Kompozytorsko to jednak nadal głównie stara szkoła. Sporo na tej płycie blastów i szybkiego kostkowania, ale nie brak momentów wolniejszych, wręcz klimatycznych, jak choćby polskojęzyczny „Oddajcie Co Moje” (acz według mnie, to chyba najsłabszy numer na tym wydawnictwie). Dla przeciwwagi mógłbym jednak wymienić kilka innych tytułów, bo tak naprawdę nie ma tutaj schematyczności, a każda kompozycja zawiera w sobie coś ciekawego. Podoba mi się, w jak niewymuszony sposób tasują się na tej płycie harmonie, jak naturalnie przeplatają pomysły, jak śmiało Tomek różnicuje wokale (choć i tutaj nie wszystko do końca mi gra, jak choćby Samaelowe „Hu – Ha” w „The Horror of the Night”). W ogólnym rozrachunku „Wrathcult” jest jednak płytą dobrą, i na pewno nie wali geriatrią, jak w przypadku dokonań wielu rówieśników jej twórcy. I na pewno nie można patrzeć na nią przez pryzmat kultowego „Thor”, o czym zresztą wspomniałem. Czy przy dzisiejszym natłoku nowości wydawniczych warto poświęcić tej płycie trzy kwadranse? Myślę, że tak. Czy zadomowi się ona w waszych głowach na dłużej? Tego już nie gwarantuję. Musicie sprawdzić sami.

Born from the grips of the pandemic, Shine are the newest brainchild of Hazael’s Tomasz Dobrzeniecki, and their first album Wrathcult leaves no doubt that a new force in Polish extreme metal has awakened. Inspired by the likes of Emperor, Bathory, Morbid Angel, Entombed and Dismember, Dobrzeniecki’s new outfit channels that lineage into something raw, relentless, and unmistakably its own.

“‘Shine’ for me is a sheen of a sword's blade, the last thing that your foes see in their lives. You can also relate it to the Promethean light given to people that enlightens or sometimes blinds us. It can also be a glare of rage stemming from the resistance towards the unnatural rules forced upon us,” explains Dobrzeniecki when asked about his new unit’s name. “Our music is full of references to ancient rules and rituals and times when people lived in accordance with nature and cosmos using the primeval knowledge.”

Dark Descent Records will handle the release, having previously collaborated with Dobrzeniecki on the reissue of Hazael’s classic opus. Wrathcult continues in similar thematic territory, invoking forgotten ancestral knowledge and tapping into primal forces, and mythic echoes of a pre-Christian world.

“Lyrics for the album are mainly inspired by the pre-Christian spirituality and mythology of our forefathers and based on such books as Bestiariusz Słowiański, Mitologia Słowiańska by J. Bobrowski and M. Wrona, and Słowiańska Czarownica (Slavic Bestiary, Slavic Mythology, Slavic Witch). The lyrics pay homage to nature and higher powers in order to upkeep the memories of the beliefs that once shaped our heritage. We live on the borderline of three cultures that blend together in some way – Germanic, Norse and Slavic mythology have quite a lot in common.”

The album was recorded at Heinrich House Studio in Legionowo, Poland - a small city on the outskirts of Warsaw that holds an important place in metal history, being the hometown of Daray (Dimmu Borgir, Vesania), Orion (Behemoth, Vesania) and Heinrich (Vesania, Decapitated). “Me and producer Heinrich (Filip Hałucha) have known each other for about 20 years. If you want to record a metal album that 100% meets your expectations, I think he's the only person that I trust.”

Jest coś cudownie rozkosznego w słuchaniu Extended Stimulation – 12” Pop Adventures on the Dancefloor 1983-1988. Na papierze to pudełko rozszerzonych miksów i electro-popowych momentów wyrwanych z serca kultury parkietowej lat osiemdziesiątych, ale słuchane od początku do końca staje się czymś więcej niż playlistą – to jak klubowa noc, która nigdy się nie kończy.

Ten zestaw wyróżnia się nie tylko znanymi nazwami, takimi jak Pet Shop Boys, New Order, ABC, Duran Duran, ale także tym, jak te rozszerzone wersje pozwalają rytmom i liniom syntezatorów swobodnie oddychać. To nie są radiowe edycje, to utwory, którym dano przestrzeń do rozciągania, pozwalając groove'om zadomowić się, dzięki czemu słyszysz ich faktury, a nie tylko ich chwytliwe melodie.

Cadaver Pleasures, Supreme Pain's first record, is really groundbreaking for numerous reasons which are repeated on their second record, Nemesis Enforcer, but with a little twist for good on general aspects. Here, we have the same dose of brutality and speed with the novelty of finding maturity on the songwriting.

The album is absolutely nothing more than a fest of riffs. Every single song has varied compositions, but leaving behind the simple and groovy riffs of their first record. The band focused on modern death metal songwriting having more technical riffs, one of the fastest drums to be heard and more complex song structures, being that the strongest point of the album. Basically, the songs are average six minutes and you do not get tired on any moment thanks to the fact that all parts of the songs are not overlong or overused. As I said before, the riffing is a lot more technical, but not getting into the "wankery" status, and the soloing is improved, not only doing the Slayer-ish shredding, but being the melody an important part of the leads.

There is no point on the record where the drummer is not a highlight, doing inhuman blast beats for minutes straight. Sadly, it becomes a bit repetitive on some tracks like "Threshold of Immortality" and "Nemesis Enforcer". Those two are perfect examples of how a varied and sometimes a slower drumming is missed. Another bad point is the bass guitar. The riffs and bridges are appropriate for a virtuous performance of the instrument, for example, the intro riff and melody of "The Unholy Throne" sounds empty for having a tedious bass lines and that usually repeats on a lot of points of the album; a better bass player would have been an amazing improve on the band general sound.

The vocals never cease to impress me, with all this brutal bands having this extremely low growls, this raspy talking of Aad Kloosterward is some refreshing change on the usual hearing, also, it fits perfectly with the sound and ideas of the band.

The band shows once more the amazing quality of their music, with speed, brutality and now some incorporation of melody, a factor more used on their third album, giving a record full of headbanging, catchy and epic moments. I gave this record a 9.5 out of 10 for the only reason I am an old school enthusiast and the change of the 90's sound to this is not my bread and butter, but the album is practically perfect and highly recommended for all kinds of metalheads from oldies to newbies.

Goddamn, Negative Plane’s second record, Stained Glass Revelations, had me pulling myself in forty different directions looking for purchase on some pertinent perspective. This is one of those toughies to evaluate, because it will be considered golden by some and utter tripe by others. Which isn’t unordinary except that what will characterize the listening experience here is an array of qualities that define the album’s greatness as a function of its ostensible shortcomings and a band that, by all indications, doesn’t give a fuck about this review.

The most obvious place to begin seemed to be production, of all things. I don’t think I’ve ever begun a review with a discussion of production, but this one seemed to warrant it. The knob-sliding and -tweaking here is liable to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of a deal. Some of you fine folks will love it for its allegiance to all things unfiltered, unclean, unholy. And everything here comes from far away. Not in the next room; maybe the next dimension. Some of you will hate it because you don’t give a shit about such aesthetic and maybe consider it a copout or even some sort of ironic sellout. Either way, Negative Plane doesn’t give a fuck what you think.

But then it also made sense to begin with a discussion of, well, just what the hell kind of music is this, anyway? Black metal seems to be the tag most often attached, but these are not your typical frostbitten riffs. In fact, they’re probably best cast as thrash riffs, though they’re pretty far outside those bounds, as well. The drum patterns are unorthodox and seem to be laid down with a calculated coarseness. Fuck precision. There is plenty of bass here and it will not be ignored, every bit as busy as the other instruments, sometimes in time with them, often breaking its own ground. Plenty of accompaniment, too, from tolling bells to ethereal chants to two-story pipe organ. And then there’s the lead guitar, gliding back and forth between weird, twisty riffs and classical motifs and virtuosity delivered with more mystique than conceit and weirdly awesome departures, like what seems to be a “surf guitar” effect that somehow works perfectly in this context. So what does all this add up to? I’m of a mind to just call it progressive and move on. Either way, Negative Plane doesn’t give a fuck what I call it.

Although, maybe I should begin with how it’s progressive, because it’s not progressive in the same way as the bands that come to mind when you hear the term “progressive.” So, progressive how? What makes progressive progressive? Sure it’s a sound, but it doesn’t have to be all clever harmonies and lilting melodies and synthesized keyboards and super-clean sheen. Moving past “prog” to “progressive,” then, the term more completely captures a structural approach that uses odd time signatures and long, intricate songs full of instrumental acrobatics and contrasting interludes. Progressive music simply moves beyond its purported boundaries. And Stained Glass Revelations does that. Thing is, this record works outside this constraint, as well, and either way, Negative Plane doesn’t give a fuck about boundaries.

But then, of course, why ought I not begin with the album’s evil air? Malevolence is a hot commodity, after all. But this is a different kind of evil. So unconcerned with the good, the light, the living that it renders the contrast necessary to define evil obsolete. It beautifies death. But isn’t revelry – even in death – a function of joy and, therefore, a concession to life? Well, this isn’t exactly celebration. More like an artist’s manic fugue, ablaze with an insatiable taste for creation via destruction. Either way, Negative Plane doesn’t give a fuck about common conceptions.

In the end, I decided it best to begin with what this record does for me. I’ve said many times (I understand if you haven’t been paying attention) that my favorite albums are those that take me some place mysterious and fantastic. I’ve said often, as well, that this demands something of me, the listener, in that I have to get myself right for the record. Get my context straight. Stained Glass Revelations is one of those special albums, to be sure, and it plays well in all levels of light, but it does its best work when I’ve taken the time to invite the darkness, both literally and figuratively.

Finding myself alone late at night, enraged at the traffic-jammed, Wal-Marted, credit report-scored banality of the daylit world, I open wide my windows, drawing closed the curtains behind them. Walls illumined with the gaunt glow of candlelight, I pull my wandering shadow to the center of the room and, anticipating metamorphosis , fear bleeds over my anger. Eyelids tight and aspect disquiet, I hunch, arms raised, palms up, wretched fingers stretched skyward and my space becomes deep, cavernous, the ancient cathedral once sanctuary for salvation seekers, now a place for the conjuring of souls whose salvation never came; long ago bathed in light now swallowed by blackened blue. And “The Fall” commences.

Fear succumbs to mania, reservation to revelation as I slip the mundane to become master of Hell’s symphony. My limbs extended to their trembling limits, distant bells beckon electric discharge to rise, expand in vast cacophony. Surging power reaches my arms to the netherworld, unlocking the door, unleashing the black from beyond the frame and sepulchral spectres engulf the room on electric waves born of bone-fretted instruments, forbidden notes cast backward, overturned, whirling upward. Great crazed flurries of my gnarled hands propel reverberant waves, careening the spirits between and against the walls in byzantine patterns, each note relinquishing its energy only as the next usurps its space.

Vast emptiness is now choked by a tortuous sonic web spanning the breadth and depth of this unholy place, its spaces pressed violently with the deadened drub of toms overstretched with the skin of innocents. Entangled scarves of sound coalesce to dark symbologic tapestries threaded with neoclassical strands, a terrible beauty against a backdrop of necrolust. From my blackened throat froths a voice not my own, the manifestation of centuries of death-staid spite and hatred loosed this night in an eclipse of righteous light. Purity blighted, bedlam relents and the deathly temple is drained to inanimate void, save towering calcite cylinders piping hymnal blasphemies, and I crumble, depleted, to the moss-ridden floor, sensations reduced to a vague awareness of being.

Stained Glass Revelations, primal in substance and grandiose in execution, is destined to be at once revered and reviled and the loudest voices on either side will cite identical criteria to support their positions. But the discussion is relevant only to those of us residing in the positive picture plane, all of it reduced to academic masturbation the moment the record was conceived because, outside of their creative sphere, Negative Plane just doesn’t give a fuck.

Negative Plane are certainly not a new band. Having released their prior full length 5 years ago the band seemed to have disappeared for quite some time. Many times when this happens bands tend to forget their original purpose or just forget music altogether. Thankfully for us, the music consuming public, the band have returned to become something stronger.

The black scene itself has seen much more attention over the past few years. Whether this can be attributed to heightened media awareness of it in books (Lords Of Chaos, True Norwegian Black Metal) and movies (Until The Light Takes Us), or just more bands in general. Even some of this could be attributed by bands standing outside the guidelines (looking directly at Liturgy) whether the band is good or bad. Regardless of all of these factors Negative Plane find a way to stand above their peers while keeping one foot firmly in the first wave of black metal.

Having a mixture of both classic Hellhammer and the intelligent use of orchestration, that bands like Dimmu Borgir have long since failed to understand, NP manage to use both restraint and a love of extremes to their advantage. When the calming yet foreboding twanging clean guitar pieces ring out signaling the beginning to "Angels Of Veiled Bone," one can feel the cold air blowing against their bones. One can only assume that this is something truly planned out by the band. Little tricks like this make the band not only stick out from their peers but also make the devastating classicism of their first wave-styled parts not only more convincing, but that much more disturbing as well.

The recording itself is just clear enough. While maintaining the "Kvlt" sounds of the past the band chose not to rely solely on the hopes that this recording choice alone would suffice. The band instead loses a piece of that danger involved in going completely lo-fi and creates a compelling mix of clarity and kvlt. While this might not make sense entirely, the recording is high enough quality that it isn't all crashing cymbals and low-tone vocals bleeding into the mix. The band use the little bit of clarity to make the songs that much tougher.

Where do Negative Plane stand in the current morass of black metal? Who knows what the "scene" may think of them but I do have good news otherwise. The band have found the right dynamics to sound intelligent and simultaneously brutal. This trick rarely seems to work in black metal and, thus, helps the band truly stick out. Most of their "peers" that fancy themselves artistic (Liturgy) have no sense of the past, let alone the dynamics necessary to create a full album that can immerse the listener from start to finish. Negative Plane have skirted this issue by writing good songs that are played in a smart way.
