W cztery lata po debiutanckim „Skulls Beneath the Cross” gdański Pandemic Outbreak powraca, w nieco przewietrzonym składzie, z nową płytą. Nie będę ukrywał, że czekałem na ten materiał, bowiem wspomniane „czaszki” miały w sobie spory potencjał. I kurewsko się cieszę, że ów potencjał został w przypadku tego zespołu rozwinął się we właściwy, w sumie to nawet bardziej niż bym tego oczekiwał, sposób. „Torment Beyond Comprehension” jest bowiem kontynuacją tego, co było wcześniej, jednak zdecydowanie bardziej dojrzałą i rozwiniętą. Nadal jest to thrash metal ze sporą domieszką death metalu. Thrashowe są tutaj przede wszystkim riffy. Niczym za starych, dobrych czasów, tnące do kości, niesamowicie agresywne i na wskroś „metalowe”, jakkolwiek banalnie by to nie zabrzmiało. W przypadku Pandemic Outbreak, co podkreślić należy, nie ma znaczenia, w jakim tempie owe cięcia następują. Bo chłopaki potrafią zajebać na pełnej kurwie, w stylu Demolition Hammer, jak i zaorać wyraźnym zwolnieniem. Jednak każdy ich riff to prawdziwy riff, a nie jakiś uzupełniacz. Każdy kawałek na tym krążku to solidny kop w dupsko, moshopędny rozpierdalacz, kandydat na koncertowy hit. Kurwa, wsłuchując się w te harmonie, jak choćby rozpoczynającą „Confess Your Sins” albo w „Left for Vultures”, mam autentyczne ciary, bo to jest przecież muzyka żywcem z lat dziewięćdziesiątych, lat mojej młodości, kiedy waliłem konia do kapel będących dziś klasykami gatunku. No i te solówki, no ja pierdolę, miód na moje uszy! Co ciekawe, „Torment Beyond Comprehension” z każdym kolejnym kawałkiem rozkręca się coraz bardziej, bo gdybym na siłę musiał wskazywać palcem najlepsze kawałki z tej, bardzo równej moim zdaniem, płyty, to jakoś tak chyba zacząłbym od końca. Słuchanie dwójki Gdańszczan jest zatem czymś na zasadzie nadmuchiwania balona, z chwilowym jedynie spuszczanie nadmiaru powietrza, by nie eksplodował zbyt wcześnie. Brzmi to fantastycznie (choć tu właśnie nieco góruje sound deathmetalowy, co z barwą wokalną jest wspomnianą wcześniej domieszką rzeczonego nurtu), okładka też jest dojebana, no nie wiem, czego chcieć więcej. Nie wiem, czy istnieje jakaś wewnętrzna rywalizacja między Pandemic Outbreak a Frightful, bo to, jakby nie patrzeć, nieco inne granie, ale gdybym mimo to miał wybierać, kto w metal umi bardziej, to chyba postawiłbym (minimalnie) na tych pierwszych. Rozjebał mnie ten album, jestem kupiony po całości.

Nie jestem może wybitnym znawcą death metalu, ale słyszałem go w życiu wystarczająco dużo, żeby wiedzieć, że po pierwsze – nie ma słabych płyt z czołgiem na okładce, a po drugie – zespoły, które wychodzą w Godz Ov War, nie dają gówna. Na okładce nowego Pandemic Outbreak co prawda czołgu nie ma, ale logówka GOV już jest, więc można brać w ciemno.

Muszę przyznać, że od pierwszego numeru „Torment Beyond Comprehension” zaskakuje. Znając poprzednie wydawnictwa „Skulls Beneath the Cross” i „Awaken of Mutilate”, a także mając już wcześniej przyjemność widzieć Pandemic Outbreak na żywo, spodziewałem się od razu solidnego kopa w jaja, tymczasem kop owszem, był, jednak nieprzesadnie solidny. Może wynika to z faktu, że mamy tu do czynienia z wyczyszczonym i – że tak powiem – profesjonalnym brzmieniem. Może też z tego, że pierwsze dwa numery są mniej gęste i bardziej melodyjne niż to, do czego Pandemic Outbreak nas przyzwyczaili. Trudno jednak oprzeć się wrażeniu, że płomień trochę przygasł. Na szczęście potem następuje znany już z koncertówki „Tales of the Slaughter” i wszystko wraca na właściwe tory – znów czuć siarką i grobem, a sąsiedzi zaczynają dobijać się do drzwi wejściowych, krzycząc „Ścisz to, kurwa!”.

Moim ulubionym numerem na płycie jest „Consumed by Flames” – nieoczywisty rytmicznie i zbudowany na fajnym riffie. Widać w nim wyraźnie, z jak kreatywnymi muzykami mamy do czynienia. Oczywiście grając death metal trudno wymyślić proch na nowo, bo zawsze gdzieś tam będzie pobrzmiewał jakiś Death, Nile czy inny Morbid Angel. Muzyka Pandemic Outbreak jest jednak świeża i intrygująca, co przyznać muszą nie tylko maniacy gatunku.

Muszę przyznać, że “Torment Beyond Comprehension” zabił mi ćwieka w jednym aspekcie: przemieliłem ten album na wszystkie sposoby i nadal nie wiem, czy zespół zrobił progres czy regres. O tym, że Pandemic Outbreak grać umieją, wiadomo od dawna i poziom zdecydowanie został utrzymany. Nowa płyta nie jest jednak tak dzika i złowroga jak „Skulls Beneath the Cross” czy koncertówka, jest natomiast bardziej czytelna. Napisałbym, że dojrzała, ale to akurat cecha, której poprzednim wydawnictwom również nie brakuje. Osobiście więcej radochy miałem jednak z wcześniejszych płyt, ale to kwestia gustu. Jedno, co mogę powiedzieć na pewno, to że „Torment Beyond Comprehension” jest od nich wyraźnie inna.

Moja opinia na temat Pandemic Outbreak pozostaje niezmienna – to świetna kapela, którą warto śledzić i która zasługuje na wszelkie wsparcie, jakie możecie jej udzielić. Kupujcie ich płyty, przychodźcie na koncerty i pokazujcie znajomym spoza Trójmiasta, jako i ja pokazuję.

Nie będę ukrywał, że czekałem na ten materiał, bowiem wspomniane „czaszki” miały w sobie spory potencjał. I kurewsko się cieszę, że ów potencjał został w przypadku tego zespołu rozwinął się we właściwy, w sumie to nawet bardziej niż bym tego oczekiwał, sposób. „Torment Beyond Comprehension” jest bowiem kontynuacją tego, co było wcześniej, jednak zdecydowanie bardziej dojrzałą i rozwiniętą. Nadal jest to thrash metal ze sporą domieszką death metalu. Thrashowe są tutaj przede wszystkim riffy. Niczym za starych, dobrych czasów, tnące do kości, niesamowicie agresywne i na wskroś „metalowe”, jakkolwiek banalnie by to nie zabrzmiało. W przypadku Pandemic Outbreak, co podkreślić należy, nie ma znaczenia, w jakim tempie owe cięcia następują. Bo chłopaki potrafią zajebać na pełnej kurwie, w stylu Demolition Hammer, jak i zaorać wyraźnym zwolnieniem. Jednak każdy ich riff to prawdziwy riff, a nie jakiś uzupełniacz. Słuchanie dwójki Gdańszczan jest zatem czymś na zasadzie nadmuchiwania balona, z chwilowym jedynie spuszczanie nadmiaru powietrza, by nie eksplodował zbyt wcześnie. Brzmi to fantastycznie (choć tu właśnie nieco góruje sound deathmetalowy, co z barwą wokalną jest wspomnianą wcześniej domieszką rzeczonego nurtu), okładka też jest dojebana, no nie wiem, czego chcieć więcej. Nie wiem, czy istnieje jakaś wewnętrzna rywalizacja między Pandemic Outbreak a Frightful, bo to, jakby nie patrzeć, nieco inne granie, ale gdybym mimo to miał wybierać, kto w metal umi bardziej, to chyba postawiłbym (minimalnie) na tych pierwszych. Rozjebał mnie ten album, jestem kupiony po całości.

Muzyka Pandemic Outbreak jest jednak świeża i intrygująca, co przyznać muszą nie tylko maniacy gatunku.

Rewelacja! Wydany w 1970 roku debiutancki, autentycznie wyśmienity album niemieckiej progresywnej formacji, bardzo przypominający nagrania wczesnych Jethro Tull, ale podane bardziej na surowo i w lekko psychodelicznej stylistyce. Czytelna melodyka, mnóstwo fletu, zagęszczone bębny, przesterowana gitara. Zespół wydał płytę własnym sumptem w nakładzie 500 egzemplarzy, a oryginalne winyle w rzadko widywanym świetnym stanie warte są ponad 1000 euro! Dodatkowo umieszczono dwa kawałki z 1970 roku, które nie zmieściły się na oryginalny LP oraz wczesną wersję utworu, który pojawił się na drugim albumie, "Phallobst" (1971). Moim zdaniem to jeden z najlepszych dziesięciu tytułów z kręgu niemieckiego prog-rocka! Bez wątpienia jest to najlepiej brzmiąca wersja CD!

This wonderful debut album by the roots-oriented German prog act made a big impression on me, when I bought it over ten years ago. This is one of the few albums which has stood the test of time, and listening to it is still gives me lots of enjoyment enriched with nostalgia. Though the music is impressionistic and wild, it mostly bluesy 1970's rock oriented by jazz, folk and slightly psychedelic influences. I think that the most talented musician of the band is Udo Dahmen playing the drums. There are evident classic jazz influences to be heard in his playing. Klaus Gülden's flute is also a good extra color in the band's palette, creating both soothing and chaotic sounds. The album begins with "Walpurgisnacht", a stoned bluesy rocker in the vein of early Jane. The second song "Knight of 3rd Degree" has Spanish and medieval elements in the music, and its metaphorical lyrics are fine, making up this track as one of the top moments of this wonderful album. The following songs "Spanferkel" and "Freitag" are instrumental numbers, the last one having very insane and painful sounding guitar solo. The second side of the LP holds the title track "Weiß der Teufel", which concludes many different elements like Gershwin's "Summertime" and mad flute solos to a wonderful avant-garde rock epic. Very emotional and powerful stuff. My copy of this album is a vinyl released by Little Wing, so it doesn't have the bonus live material from Aachen, but I have heard them from my "Avalon and On" boxed set, and at least the live version from their "Avalon Suite" is a good performance of a fine tune. A very recommendable, wonderful album.

What an aggressive flute performance. RUFUS ZUPHALL's debut album "Weiß Der Teufel ..." has got to be one of hard Krautrock pioneers.
Firstly, the last titled track is the masterpiece, based upon a standard jazz number "Summertime". Klaus' floating flute playing and hard-edged rock phrases are amazingly violent although based upon such a jazz standard one. Their improvised heavy rock riffs in the beginning part and flexible drum machinegun-ish meteor shower remind me hard / shoegaze / freestyled Krautrock like Guru Guru or Ash Ra Tempel. Whilst the following one with Summertime's phrases, featuring stable jazz essence and steady flute punches, give us a momentary comfort. And the middle is kinda killa for us ... complex, eccentric flute violence makes a definite explosion as a percussive device, with crazy meaningless shouts. This part is very exciting and experimental, that can be suitable to be called as Krautrock. Basically not leans toward other Prog Folk outfits featuring beautiful flute sounds like Jethro Tull. They played with kaleidoscopic soundscape, with burning sunlight and cool moonlight. Not only simply jazzy footprints they'd left but also splendid kinky freaky experiment expression, let me say.

Not only the masterpiece above mentioned, we can enjoy their brilliant, delightful sounds, especially via Klaus' flute launcher. The third track "Spanferkel" is the shortest in this album but one of the most powerful, the most thrilling attacks too, where massive flute bomb makes exposures of eruption again and again. Their perfect innovation of sound drives us mad. On the contrary, the fourth (the last of Side A) one "Freitag" sounds a bit unrefined (in a fine sense) along with tense, slightly cynical deep riffs like jazz Krautrocker Xhol Caravan or Air in the same nation. In the first track "Walpurgisnacht" we can enjoy hard pop with fantastic flute-based dry-fruity tips as if we would throw ourselves into old-fashioned "non-kosmische" German rock really. Through the whole creation, we can feel very colourful structure here and there.

Anyway off-topic, this album was recommended by a Krautrock specialist Philippe Blache as a brilliant flute-fronted one. Let me say thanks to Philippe and I wish I could be such a killer flutist. :)

Rewelacja! Wydany w 1970 roku debiutancki, autentycznie wyśmienity album niemieckiej progresywnej formacji, bardzo przypominający nagrania wczesnych Jethro Tull, ale podane bardziej na surowo i w lekko psychodelicznej stylistyce. Czytelna melodyka, mnóstwo fletu, zagęszczone bębny, przesterowana gitara. Zespół wydał płytę własnym sumptem w nakładzie 500 egzemplarzy, a oryginalne winyle w rzadko widywanym świetnym stanie warte są ponad 1000 euro! Dodatkowo umieszczono dwa kawałki z 1970 roku, które nie zmieściły się na oryginalny LP oraz wczesną wersję utworu, który pojawił się na drugim albumie, "Phallobst" (1971). Moim zdaniem to jeden z najlepszych dziesięciu tytułów z kręgu niemieckiego prog-rocka! Bez wątpienia jest to najlepiej brzmiąca wersja CD!

This wonderful debut album by the roots-oriented German prog act made a big impression on me, when I bought it over ten years ago. This is one of the few albums which has stood the test of time, and listening to it is still gives me lots of enjoyment enriched with nostalgia. Though the music is impressionistic and wild, it mostly bluesy 1970's rock oriented by jazz, folk and slightly psychedelic influences. I think that the most talented musician of the band is Udo Dahmen playing the drums. There are evident classic jazz influences to be heard in his playing. Klaus Gülden's flute is also a good extra color in the band's palette, creating both soothing and chaotic sounds. The album begins with "Walpurgisnacht", a stoned bluesy rocker in the vein of early Jane. The second song "Knight of 3rd Degree" has Spanish and medieval elements in the music, and its metaphorical lyrics are fine, making up this track as one of the top moments of this wonderful album. The following songs "Spanferkel" and "Freitag" are instrumental numbers, the last one having very insane and painful sounding guitar solo. The second side of the LP holds the title track "Weiß der Teufel", which concludes many different elements like Gershwin's "Summertime" and mad flute solos to a wonderful avant-garde rock epic. Very emotional and powerful stuff. My copy of this album is a vinyl released by Little Wing, so it doesn't have the bonus live material from Aachen, but I have heard them from my "Avalon and On" boxed set, and at least the live version from their "Avalon Suite" is a good performance of a fine tune. A very recommendable, wonderful album.

What an aggressive flute performance. RUFUS ZUPHALL's debut album "Weiß Der Teufel ..." has got to be one of hard Krautrock pioneers.
Firstly, the last titled track is the masterpiece, based upon a standard jazz number "Summertime". Klaus' floating flute playing and hard-edged rock phrases are amazingly violent although based upon such a jazz standard one. Their improvised heavy rock riffs in the beginning part and flexible drum machinegun-ish meteor shower remind me hard / shoegaze / freestyled Krautrock like Guru Guru or Ash Ra Tempel. Whilst the following one with Summertime's phrases, featuring stable jazz essence and steady flute punches, give us a momentary comfort. And the middle is kinda killa for us ... complex, eccentric flute violence makes a definite explosion as a percussive device, with crazy meaningless shouts. This part is very exciting and experimental, that can be suitable to be called as Krautrock. Basically not leans toward other Prog Folk outfits featuring beautiful flute sounds like Jethro Tull. They played with kaleidoscopic soundscape, with burning sunlight and cool moonlight. Not only simply jazzy footprints they'd left but also splendid kinky freaky experiment expression, let me say.

Not only the masterpiece above mentioned, we can enjoy their brilliant, delightful sounds, especially via Klaus' flute launcher. The third track "Spanferkel" is the shortest in this album but one of the most powerful, the most thrilling attacks too, where massive flute bomb makes exposures of eruption again and again. Their perfect innovation of sound drives us mad. On the contrary, the fourth (the last of Side A) one "Freitag" sounds a bit unrefined (in a fine sense) along with tense, slightly cynical deep riffs like jazz Krautrocker Xhol Caravan or Air in the same nation. In the first track "Walpurgisnacht" we can enjoy hard pop with fantastic flute-based dry-fruity tips as if we would throw ourselves into old-fashioned "non-kosmische" German rock really. Through the whole creation, we can feel very colourful structure here and there.

Anyway off-topic, this album was recommended by a Krautrock specialist Philippe Blache as a brilliant flute-fronted one. Let me say thanks to Philippe and I wish I could be such a killer flutist. :)

WHAT A COMEBACK HOLY SHIT!
Ja osobiście uważam ten powrót za triumfalny, na wielu poziomach.

Może i jestem odosobniony w swojej opinii, ale jakoś nigdy nie ciąłem się za Coroner. To trochę taki casus Voivod – znam, doceniam, czasem lubię, ale nigdy nie był zespołem pierwszego wyboru, jeśli chodziło o thrash metal. No, dwa pierwsze albumy oraz demo „Death Cult” lubię i to do nich wracam najczęściej. Nie byłem również tym, który wyczekiwał od ponad trzydziestu lat nowego albumu. „No More Color”, „Mental Vortex” są spoko i czasem się zakręcą, jednakże od dużego dzwonu. „Grin” odświeżyłem po wielu latach dopiero gdy wjechał niniejszy krążek. Tak to mniej więcej wygląda u mnie sprawa z Coroner.

I jak ja na tej podbudowie mam ocenić najnowszy „Dissonance Theory”? Przede wszystkim – nie byłem osobą, która w ogóle go wyczekiwała. Trzydzieści dwa lata to sporo i z drugiej strony podziwiam Barona i Royca, że nie spękali, że spięli pośladki i jednak wypuścili ten album. Tylko czy był sens? Czy to jest płyta godna ich historii? Nie wiem, ja odbieram ją jak typowy thrash metalowy powrót po wielu wielu latach – nie ma wyjątkowej tragedii, ale mój entuzjazm jest mocno umiarkowany po jej odsłuchu.

„Dissonance Theory” bliżej jest do trzech ostatnich albumów. Tak, jest to techniczny thrash metal, który – jak na moje ucho – to ma pewne momenty, jednakże ma też sporo fragmentów nużących. Choćby te w „Cirisium Bound” czy „The Law”, takie rozlazłe, trochę efemeryczne, z dużą dozą nie tylko technicznego połamania, ale też progresywnego zacięcia. Choć nie mogę im też odmówić fajnych, szybszych numerów – przy których i tak mam jedno ale: ciut zbyt melodyjnie jak na mój gust. Natomiast część z nich bardzo dobrze nawiązuje do spuścizny Coroner już z lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Ubolewam tylko, że jest tych momentów mniej w porównaniu do fragmentów mniej thrash metalowych i wolniejszych. Podchodzą mi one niekiedy pod generyczność zespołu Petrozy z ostatnich dwóch dekad – taka tam udawana wściekłość, z jednej sztancy, pomnożona przez ilość utworów. Przyznam, że pierwsze dwa – trzy odsłuchy „Dissonance Theory” rozbudziły we mnie poczucie, że polubię się z tą płytą na dłużej. Jednak po kolejnych kilkunastu sesjach mam wrażenie, że słyszę na niej mniej jasnych punktów niż na początku. A to jednak dobrze nie wróży.

W kwestii brzmienia – „Dissonance Theory” brzmi jak album thrash metalowy nagrany pod koniec pierwszego ćwierćwiecza XXI wieku – wszystko oczywiście na jak najwyższym poziomie. Daleko mu od dzikości pierwszych krążków Szwajcarów. Chwilami też mam wrażenie, że zespół chciał uzyskać sound będący połączeniem albumów Triptykon i obecnego wcielenia Kreator. Szczególnie ta pierwsza nazwa kołacze mi się pod kopułą podczas odsłuchów najnowszego dzieła Coroner. Normalnie byłaby to chyba zaleta, w kontekście „Dissonance Theory” nie do końca jednak mnie przekonuje.

Tym samym jest to po prostu kolejny powrót, którego jak dla mnie mogłoby nie być. Natomiast wszyscy wiemy co teraz się wydarzy – trasy po największych festiwalach, w Polsce headlinerstwo na Mysticu, a potem jeśli będziemy mieli pecha to jeszcze kilka płyt będących wariacjami poprzedniczki. Mimo sympatii dla Coroner – nic by się nie stało, jeśli ostatnim krążkiem w ich dyskografii nadal był „Grin”.

Swiss thrashers Coroner unleashed their sixth album 32 years after their previous one, "Grin" (1993). Perhaps that's a record? The good news is that "Dissonance Theory" is certainly not a time machine that takes us back a third of a century.

Progressive metal has been confidently attributed to the band before, but if we follow the letter of the law, Coroner have always performed technical thrash metal. Right, there were prog elements in their music, but not to the extent of being considered a prog band. Take, for example, "Mental Vortex" (1991), their fourth album: only the final track, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" – yep, a Beatles cover – contains obvious prog traces, and that's only because the original had prog in it.

Progressive thrash metal truly blossomed in its full glory only on "Dissonance Theory". Coroner acquired most of their new melodic progressions, which were not characteristic for them, thanks to this style.

Every metal subgenre is diversified, but this characteristic applies especially to progressive metal – too many dissimilar bands are attached to this style. The current Coroner are perhaps in that same vein as the progressively transfigured Enslaved (but before their path paralleled Opeth). Coroner eagerly use majestic groove with a prog-tinged edge, as evidenced, for example, by the beginning of "Sacrificial Lamb", that's one of the reasons Enslaved are remembered more often on "Dissonance Theory" of all the current (extreme) proggers.

Classifying Coroner's prog niche is complicated by the fact that starting with "Consequence" (opener "Oxymoron" is just an intro) Tommy Vetterli is soloing in a manner more befitting a progressive power metal guitarist – so much so that Savatage comes to mind on "Symmetry" and "Transparent Eye". The only exception is the unsettling solo on "Renewal", which lacks a power metal hint. Anyway, basically each song features a solo of varying sophistication, what is more, pulsating with a melody, though it's not particularly catchy.

It's not as if this scenario proved to be a soldierproof template. For example, a solo of this kind on "Sacrificial Lamb" doesn't really fit the canvas of the song, while the prog lick almost at its beginning is to the point. "Trinity" also stands out: at first the composition can boast a short lick almost in the vein of Cynic, then another progressive power metal solo enters, but it's somehow poppy, with a rather slick melody.

In fact, the songs aren't equal despite the album's cohesiveness. Or, more accurately, not quite equal. "Consequence" initially overwhelms you with its hodgepodge, fragments from different styles stand in a line here, they just follow one after another. You can even get embarrassed about what else to expect from the album. However, "Sacrificial Lamb" is more stylistically consistent. "Cirsium Bound" also has some unexpected drops, but either everything is already balanced, or you've already tuned into the musical texture and perceive everything naturally.

In its turn "Symmetry" is in line with the previous songs, and it's finally clear here that "shock and awe" were only at the beginning. But as soon as you calmed down, "The Law" appears – the most unusual song on the album. It's somehow incongruous and has not only a different manner of playing but also a different energy. There's not even a solo in this song. The following "Trinity" proceeds as expected, so you wait with impatience and curiosity to hear how "Renewal" will be perceived. Well, it goes off with a bang: the song is completely in the spirit of the album. However, it was more puzzling than aesthetically pleasing as a premiere single.

The final track, "Prolonging," is a triumph of the synthesizer in progressive metal. This instrument isn't an innovation for Coroner; we heard it on their debut, "R.I.P." (1987), as well as on "Grin," while on "Dissonance Theory" it's found in the piano finale of "Trinity" and a few passages with a synth backing scattered throughout the album – but here the synthesizer was given the opportunity for the first time to sound emphatically. A sophisticated and very intense synthesizer solo, it's pure art rock. A wonderful finale.

"Grin", by the way, makes its presence felt frequently during "Dissonance Theory". Although it only made a brief appearance at the end of "Consequence", but even that was somewhat reassuring, to tell the truth. Later echo of the predecessor appears more or less clearly on every song, even in the modernized attitude as on "Cirsium Bound".

In fact, what connects "Dissonance Theory" to its past (i. e. to "Mental Vortex" and "Grin" first of all) is palm muting. Although this technique doesn't make up a significant portion of the material now, and downtuned guitars can even create an illusion of groove metal, good old technical thrash metal emerges most often precisely during palm-muted riffs, pay attention to "Consequence" and "Renewal". But palm muting is a means of modernization on "Dissonance Theory" as well, and you can even hear a Meshuggah vibe in its sounding: on "Transparent Eye" (a slowed-down passage where the speed seems to be turned down with the regulator) and "Renewal". You can also hear on "Transparent Eye" such a modern technique as palm-muted riff with dissonant, squelching effect. In general, there are a decent number of dissonances scattered throughout the album, they are just presented unobtrusively.

Coroner are often referred to as an underrated band, but the truth is that their music though its originality has always been somewhat languid and draggy. Coroner might create a sense of vivacity sometimes, but these were fleeting, illusory passages. For example, "Grin" can be quite catchy if its mood takes you, of course, but it is downright tiresome in its monotony: in every song you're just waiting for Coroner to make an interesting move, so the acceleration in the last quarter of the title track, "Grin (Nails Hurt)", with its dry and precise drums is a veritable injection of stimulant drugs for the listener. Like it or not, this characteristic trait is one of the legacies/influences of Celtic Frost, which is evident on every Coroner album from the debut to "Grin".

"Dissonance Theory" is anything but tiresome, it's Coroner's most vital work yet, this album literally bursts with energy. Although Ron Broder's vocals still sound like Tom G. Warrior (well, almost), the Celtic Frost influence is nowhere to be found here with the exception of a couple of slow and suspenseful passages (like the one on "Symmetry" after the solo). Just because Celtic Frost and vitality are ill-assorted.

Metallica proved to be a powerful factor in the album's vitality: the melodism, uncharacteristic of early Coroner, is also brought to "Dissonance Theory" by Metallica. Their vibes can be felt already on "Consequence": thrash metal palm muting punchiness in the second riff is injected with insertions in the spirit of "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" (2016) for sure. "Symmetry" bears a more obvious tinge of Metallica: the beginning is reminiscent of "Moth into Flame" from "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" (then Rammstein is heard at the peak of the chorus, just one transition, but almost "Amerika"). Basically, there is some Metallica-esque "Grin" in this song.

Further, the acceleration on the second half of "The Law" is Metallica again. A short groove emerges after the opening riff of "Transparent Eye" – it's something between Enslaved and Metallica. The beginning of "Trinity" features a late-Metallica palm-muted riff as well. But the absolute champion is, of course, "Renewal" – there is a true Metallica potpourri at the beginning: the opening riff recalls "Blackened" from "...and Justice for All" (1988), while its ending is again from "Moth into Flame", and then you can immediately hear echoes of "The Day That Never Comes" from "Death Magnetic" (2008). It was a true provocation to release this song as the first single.

Metallica, however, is also not an "innovation" at all for Coroner. "Mental Vortex", that classic technical thrash metal album almost entirely built on palm muting, was literally interlarded with "...and Justice for All" tinges – the third song, "Semtex Revolution", could be called the most Metallica-esque. While on the following "Sirens", the album's strangest song, "Kill 'Em All" (1983) is sometimes heard behind the rough low-end groove and the strained vocals – well-camouflaged Metallica vitality is present here for sure.

To be fair, it's not a one-way street case: during "Paralyzed, Mesmerized", the eighth track on "Grin", we hear a lick that would later begin to sound on "St. Anger" (2003) in the bassline of opener "Frantic." Well, almost.

Summary. Coroner both remained true to themselves and transcended themselves. Try it together with them.

Szczególnie ta pierwsza nazwa kołacze mi się pod kopułą podczas odsłuchów najnowszego dzieła Coroner. Normalnie byłaby to chyba zaleta, w kontekście „Dissonance Theory” nie do końca jednak mnie przekonuje.

Tym samym jest to po prostu kolejny powrót, którego jak dla mnie mogłoby nie być. Natomiast wszyscy wiemy co teraz się wydarzy – trasy po największych festiwalach, w Polsce headlinerstwo na Mysticu, a potem jeśli będziemy mieli pecha to jeszcze kilka płyt będących wariacjami poprzedniczki. Mimo sympatii dla Coroner – nic by się nie stało, jeśli ostatnim krążkiem w ich dyskografii nadal był „Grin”.

Oracle


Swiss thrashers Coroner unleashed their sixth album 32 years after their previous one, "Grin" (1993). Perhaps that's a record? The good news is that "Dissonance Theory" is certainly not a time machine that takes us back a third of a century.

Progressive metal has been confidently attributed to the band before, but if we follow the letter of the law, Coroner have always performed technical thrash metal. Right, there were prog elements in their music, but not to the extent of being considered a prog band. Take, for example, "Mental Vortex" (1991), their fourth album: only the final track, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" – yep, a Beatles cover – contains obvious prog traces, and that's only because the original had prog in it.

Progressive thrash metal truly blossomed in its full glory only on "Dissonance Theory". Coroner acquired most of their new melodic progressions, which were not characteristic for them, thanks to this style.

Every metal subgenre is diversified, but this characteristic applies especially to progressive metal – too many dissimilar bands are attached to this style. The current Coroner are perhaps in that same vein as the progressively transfigured Enslaved (but before their path paralleled Opeth). Coroner eagerly use majestic groove with a prog-tinged edge, as evidenced, for example, by the beginning of "Sacrificial Lamb", that's one of the reasons Enslaved are remembered more often on "Dissonance Theory" of all the current (extreme) proggers.

Classifying Coroner's prog niche is complicated by the fact that starting with "Consequence" (opener "Oxymoron" is just an intro) Tommy Vetterli is soloing in a manner more befitting a progressive power metal guitarist – so much so that Savatage comes to mind on "Symmetry" and "Transparent Eye". The only exception is the unsettling solo on "Renewal", which lacks a power metal hint. Anyway, basically each song features a solo of varying sophistication, what is more, pulsating with a melody, though it's not particularly catchy.

It's not as if this scenario proved to be a soldierproof template. For example, a solo of this kind on "Sacrificial Lamb" doesn't really fit the canvas of the song, while the prog lick almost at its beginning is to the point. "Trinity" also stands out: at first the composition can boast a short lick almost in the vein of Cynic, then another progressive power metal solo enters, but it's somehow poppy, with a rather slick melody.

In fact, the songs aren't equal despite the album's cohesiveness. Or, more accurately, not quite equal. "Consequence" initially overwhelms you with its hodgepodge, fragments from different styles stand in a line here, they just follow one after another. You can even get embarrassed about what else to expect from the album. However, "Sacrificial Lamb" is more stylistically consistent. "Cirsium Bound" also has some unexpected drops, but either everything is already balanced, or you've already tuned into the musical texture and perceive everything naturally.

In its turn "Symmetry" is in line with the previous songs, and it's finally clear here that "shock and awe" were only at the beginning. But as soon as you calmed down, "The Law" appears – the most unusual song on the album. It's somehow incongruous and has not only a different manner of playing but also a different energy. There's not even a solo in this song. The following "Trinity" proceeds as expected, so you wait with impatience and curiosity to hear how "Renewal" will be perceived. Well, it goes off with a bang: the song is completely in the spirit of the album. However, it was more puzzling than aesthetically pleasing as a premiere single.

The final track, "Prolonging," is a triumph of the synthesizer in progressive metal. This instrument isn't an innovation for Coroner; we heard it on their debut, "R.I.P." (1987), as well as on "Grin," while on "Dissonance Theory" it's found in the piano finale of "Trinity" and a few passages with a synth backing scattered throughout the album – but here the synthesizer was given the opportunity for the first time to sound emphatically. A sophisticated and very intense synthesizer solo, it's pure art rock. A wonderful finale.

"Grin", by the way, makes its presence felt frequently during "Dissonance Theory". Although it only made a brief appearance at the end of "Consequence", but even that was somewhat reassuring, to tell the truth. Later echo of the predecessor appears more or less clearly on every song, even in the modernized attitude as on "Cirsium Bound".

In fact, what connects "Dissonance Theory" to its past (i. e. to "Mental Vortex" and "Grin" first of all) is palm muting. Although this technique doesn't make up a significant portion of the material now, and downtuned guitars can even create an illusion of groove metal, good old technical thrash metal emerges most often precisely during palm-muted riffs, pay attention to "Consequence" and "Renewal". But palm muting is a means of modernization on "Dissonance Theory" as well, and you can even hear a Meshuggah vibe in its sounding: on "Transparent Eye" (a slowed-down passage where the speed seems to be turned down with the regulator) and "Renewal". You can also hear on "Transparent Eye" such a modern technique as palm-muted riff with dissonant, squelching effect. In general, there are a decent number of dissonances scattered throughout the album, they are just presented unobtrusively.

Coroner are often referred to as an underrated band, but the truth is that their music though its originality has always been somewhat languid and draggy. Coroner might create a sense of vivacity sometimes, but these were fleeting, illusory passages. For example, "Grin" can be quite catchy if its mood takes you, of course, but it is downright tiresome in its monotony: in every song you're just waiting for Coroner to make an interesting move, so the acceleration in the last quarter of the title track, "Grin (Nails Hurt)", with its dry and precise drums is a veritable injection of stimulant drugs for the listener. Like it or not, this characteristic trait is one of the legacies/influences of Celtic Frost, which is evident on every Coroner album from the debut to "Grin".

"Dissonance Theory" is anything but tiresome, it's Coroner's most vital work yet, this album literally bursts with energy. Although Ron Broder's vocals still sound like Tom G. Warrior (well, almost), the Celtic Frost influence is nowhere to be found here with the exception of a couple of slow and suspenseful passages (like the one on "Symmetry" after the solo). Just because Celtic Frost and vitality are ill-assorted.

Metallica proved to be a powerful factor in the album's vitality: the melodism, uncharacteristic of early Coroner, is also brought to "Dissonance Theory" by Metallica. Their vibes can be felt already on "Consequence": thrash metal palm muting punchiness in the second riff is injected with insertions in the spirit of "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" (2016) for sure. "Symmetry" bears a more obvious tinge of Metallica: the beginning is reminiscent of "Moth into Flame" from "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" (then Rammstein is heard at the peak of the chorus, just one transition, but almost "Amerika"). Basically, there is some Metallica-esque "Grin" in this song.

Further, the acceleration on the second half of "The Law" is Metallica again. A short groove emerges after the opening riff of "Transparent Eye" – it's something between Enslaved and Metallica. The beginning of "Trinity" features a late-Metallica palm-muted riff as well. But the absolute champion is, of course, "Renewal" – there is a true Metallica potpourri at the beginning: the opening riff recalls "Blackened" from "...and Justice for All" (1988), while its ending is again from "Moth into Flame", and then you can immediately hear echoes of "The Day That Never Comes" from "Death Magnetic" (2008). It was a true provocation to release this song as the first single.

Metallica, however, is also not an "innovation" at all for Coroner. "Mental Vortex", that classic technical thrash metal album almost entirely built on palm muting, was literally interlarded with "...and Justice for All" tinges – the third song, "Semtex Revolution", could be called the most Metallica-esque. While on the following "Sirens", the album's strangest song, "Kill 'Em All" (1983) is sometimes heard behind the rough low-end groove and the strained vocals – well-camouflaged Metallica vitality is present here for sure.

To be fair, it's not a one-way street case: during "Paralyzed, Mesmerized", the eighth track on "Grin", we hear a lick that would later begin to sound on "St. Anger" (2003) in the bassline of opener "Frantic." Well, almost.

Summary. Coroner both remained true to themselves and transcended themselves. Try it together with them.

Świetny debiut z 'Miasta Aniołów' plus, jako bonusy 'Peace Through Violence' - demo z 1991 roku.



I first heard about this record a couple of years ago when someone sent me a link to one of their songs. It was of poor quality kind of hard to hear, but I was able to enjoy it regardless. Then I was able to get a burnt copy of the CD but it was also in poor quality and I had enough of that. The hunt was on, on finding this rare CD. I went everywhere to find it and came up empty handed, until 2 years later. I found a CD of theirs in great condition and did not hesitate in purchasing it. Being more than happy, I decided it was time to give this album a listen from beginning to end in my Chevrolet pick-up truck.

I find this band appealing because they're from Los Angeles and all the members in recording this album were of Hispanic descent. In the time this album came out it was flooded with all the nirvana garbage that was playing on the radio and MTV. They knew they didn’t have a chance to get any airplay, but still proceeded to tour and gain their fans. This record is pure Crossover-Thrash with elements of Speed Metal and makes no apologies about it. This is one of these records that you have to play from beginning to end. The riffs are nice and fast, Art Marquez & Choy Sandoval gives it a mix of Dark Angel and Suicidal Tendencies put together. The bass is at a perfect tone on this record, giving the songs an extra bit of depth that I hear every time I listen to it on my Zune. The singing from Tom Urioste is the perfect mix of punk and metal. He’s not going to be confused for Ron Rinehart or Mike Muir but it’s still good.

I also see an influence of Megadeth as the political tones the song title and song titles give in reference to the environment and world peace. They do in a way were its not too pushy or annoying, which is something that is difficult to do without looking to much of a bleeding heart liberal. They just give enough for the listener to think of what they’re trying to say and make up their own minds. The songs that stick out for me the most are Funeral Parlor, The Damnation of Humanization, The Day After, Peace Through Violence, Raping Mother Nature, Fundamental Mental Derangement, Severance Pay and Trying to Be Cool. They seem to be the ones I play over and over in my truck and on my Zune.

It’s a shame that this record did not get more recognition than it did. But they still have some sort of a hardcore following even they had only released this record and a demo a couple years before. Thanks to this generations technology with Soulseek and YouTube a new generation of fans will come, a new set of ears for a new set of metal heads. I still have this album on constant rotation on my playlist and always try to spread their album to other people.

Świetny debiut z 'Miasta Aniołów' plus, jako bonusy 'Peace Through Violence' - demo z 1991 roku.



I first heard about this record a couple of years ago when someone sent me a link to one of their songs. It was of poor quality kind of hard to hear, but I was able to enjoy it regardless. Then I was able to get a burnt copy of the CD but it was also in poor quality and I had enough of that. The hunt was on, on finding this rare CD. I went everywhere to find it and came up empty handed, until 2 years later. I found a CD of theirs in great condition and did not hesitate in purchasing it. Being more than happy, I decided it was time to give this album a listen from beginning to end in my Chevrolet pick-up truck.

I find this band appealing because they're from Los Angeles and all the members in recording this album were of Hispanic descent. In the time this album came out it was flooded with all the nirvana garbage that was playing on the radio and MTV. They knew they didn’t have a chance to get any airplay, but still proceeded to tour and gain their fans. This record is pure Crossover-Thrash with elements of Speed Metal and makes no apologies about it. This is one of these records that you have to play from beginning to end. The riffs are nice and fast, Art Marquez & Choy Sandoval gives it a mix of Dark Angel and Suicidal Tendencies put together. The bass is at a perfect tone on this record, giving the songs an extra bit of depth that I hear every time I listen to it on my Zune. Administratorr to pseudonim artystyczny gitarzysty Bartosza Marmola, a jednocześnie nazwa zespołu, który od roku 2010 związany jest z wytwórnią Jimmy Jazz Records i dla niej nagrał swoje dwa dotychczasowe albumy: debiutanckie "Piosenki w kaftanie" i nagrane wspólnie z Lesławem (Komety) "Piosenki o Warszawie".
Oba wydawnictwa otrzymały bardzo dobre oceny zarówno ze strony fanów jak i recenzentów muzycznych. Takie utwory jak „Rowerem na Wolę", "Berliner", "Polityczna zagłada" na stałe zadomowiły się na playlistach wielu rozgłośni radiowych.

Najnowszy album o tytule "Powierzchnie wspólne" powstawał równolegle ze wspomnianymi "Piosenkami o Warszawie". Obie płyty mają wspólny muzyczny mianownik, choć tworzą odrębne historie choćby za sprawą tematyki tekstów. Administratorr podkreśla, że ten materiał muzyczny to "powierzchnia wyjątkowo osobista". Teksty choć czasami surrealistyczne to jednak zrozumiałe, pokazują naszą codzienność, stosunki międzyludzkie, a także świat polityki.

Nowy album to muzyczna kontynuacja drogi obranej przy debiutanckiej płycie. Nie ma wątpliwości, że w dokonaniach Administratorra mamy do czynienia z muzyczną alternatywą, ze źródłami w garażowym rocku i rdzennym rock’n’rollu nie pozbawioną jednak wielu smaczków rodem z zupełnie innej bajki. Ciągły rozwój i kolejne etapy muzycznego wtajemniczenia to zresztą jedna z wizytówek Administratorra.
Choć za sprawą przebojowego repertuaru „Powierzchniom wspólnym” bliżej zapewne do radiowych list przebojów niż sceny garażowej to jednak bezsprzecznie nie mamy tu do czynienia z muzyką lekką, łatwa i przyjemną ale z rasową, solidną porcja alternatywnego, przebojowego rock’n’rolla, który docenić jest w stanie każdy kto postanowi poświęcić tej płycie trochę swojego czasu.

Płyta zrobiła na mnie spore wrażenie, a to w przypadku rodzimych wydawnictw nie jest takie łatwe. Później pojawił się album zrobiony przy współudziale Lesława (Komety, Partia), który nieopatrznie przeoczyłem. Z kolei na dniach ukazał się najnowszy, autorski materiał zespołu, który rzekomo powstawał w tym samym czasie co wyżej wspomniane „Piosenki O Warszawie”. Tym razem postanowiłem nie powielać grzechów przeszłości i dzięki uprzejmości Jimmy Jazz Records wszedłem w posiadanie „Powierzchni Wspólnych”, najnowszego albumu Administratorra.

Jakie wrażenia? Jak w przypadku debiutu tak i tym razem Warszawiacy stworzyli rzecz na poziomie, tyle, że na dużo wyższym niż poprzednio. Być może uboga okładka niespecjalnie zachęca do wspólnej przygody, ale przecież to muzyka jest najważniejsza. Ta wciąga i magnetyzuje z niezwykłą siłą. Co tu dużo mówić – panowie mają głowy wypełnione niebanalnymi pomysłami, które realizują w mistrzowski sposób. Raptem po kilku odsłuchach wszystko nabiera odpowiednich kolorów, staje się przejrzyste niczym okładkowy szkic architektoniczny. Muzycznie panowie kontynuują wątki zainicjowane przy okazji debiutu. Jednak nie można im zarzucić twórczej stagnacji. Wręcz przeciwnie, zespół idzie do przodu, wciąż się rozwija i to słychać. Przez to muzyka staje się coraz ciekawsza, dojrzalsza.

Jeżeli ktoś oczekuje porównań, to słuchając premierowych kompozycji nieraz przemknęły mi przez myśl takie nazwy jak Chłopcy Z Placu Broni, Róże Europy czy Firebirds. To i tak nie wszystko, bo Administratorr tym razem wpuścił do swojej twórczości spory ładunek brytyjskich emocji, których nie powstydziłyby się Coldplay czy Travis. Najważniejszy jest fakt, że „Powierzchnie Wspólne” mimo wszystko prezentują się nad wyraz oryginalnie, świeżo. Być może sporą tego zasługą jest specyficzna barwa wokalisty (Bartosz Marmol) – podobnie jak Grabaż (Strachy Na Lachy) czy Lesław, przeważnie śpiewa w tych samych rejestrach, co nie wadzi, a wręcz sprzyja. Bronią się też same utwory – każdy z nich jest przemyślany, posiada chwytliwy motyw. Wiele spośród nich szybko zapada w pamięć, jak choćby refren „Królowej Cellulitu”, do którego zrealizowano teledysk, nośny „Harcerski” z wyrazistą pracą wyeksponowanego basu. Równie dobrze wypadają otwierający „Guziki”, świetny tekstowo „Piosenka Młodych Architektów” czy bardziej żywiołowy „Mój Prezydent” – jeżeli chodzi o tekst, też trafiony jak cholera.

Album posiada jakby dwa oblicza; jeden bardziej nastrojowy, melancholijny co słychać przy okazji „Guziki”, „Ostatni Człowiek W Kosmosie” oraz świetnym „Wrocław Wzywa” i drugi bardziej zwariowany, czasem żartobliwy co pokazują „Królowa Cellulitu” czy też „Pachniesz Dziwnie”, ostrzejszy „Szalony Humanista”. W obu wcieleniach Administratorr prezentuje się naturalnie, wiarygodnie, po prostu bardzo dobrze. Dodam, że na płycie brak „średniaków” – wszystkie z czternastu utworów mają w sobie to coś.

„Powierzchnie Wspólne” to materiał z pewnością udany, posiadający w sobie wiele cech znamiennych dla rodzimej muzyki alternatywnej i to z różnego okresu. Płyta została zrealizowana na wysokim poziomie, co w zestawieniu z pomysłowymi kompozycjami robi jak najlepsze wrażenie. Komu bliskie są rockowe brzmienia z wyczuwalnym sentymentem wobec lat 80 – tych, a niekiedy nawet bardziej odległych czasów, ten z pewnością pokocha nowy materiał Administratorr. Bez dwóch zdań zespół wykonał kawał dobrej roboty – BRAWO!
