The definitive collection of After The Fire, 'Bright Lights' contains all of the bands five albums as well as demos, B-sides and live tracks, with 12 recordings that are issued here on CD for the first time and 14 that are completely unreleased.

The project has been overseen by founding member Peter Banks who, along with members Andy Piercy and John Russell, has been interviewed exclusively for the sleeve notes and has also opened up his photo archive, providing a wealth of rare images.

Disc One features the band's debut album 'Signs Of Change' as well as bonus tracks.

Disc Two contains three early demos, previously unreleased on CD as well as 13 previously unreleased demos recorded in preparation for 'Laser Love'.

Disc Three features 'Laser Love' that includes hit single 'One Rule For You' as well as rare single edits, B-sides and live tracks.

Disc Four includes '80-f' as well as nine recordings that have never been issued on CD before, including rare B-sides and seven tracks from the original version of '80f'.

Disc Five contains 'Batteries Not Included' and two bonus tracks.

Disc Six features 'AT2F', one track unreleased on CD, a completely unreleased track as well as a rare extended version of the band's hit 'Der Kommissar'.



After the Fire (known in North America simply as ATF) appear on this site because they released one prog album, this is not it. The band's first album "Signs of change" was for many years a collectible prog rarity, although it has in recent years become more readily available on CD. After the limited release of their debut, ATF signed with CBS records (in 1978), and completely revamped their style and sound. What emerged was a band who had moved with the times, and reinvented themselves as an electronic new wave outfit with a focus on short pop orientated songs. During this phase, keyboards player Peter Banks changed his name to Memory Banks, purportedly to avoid confusion with the ex-Yes man. Prior to work commencing on the album bassist Nick Battle left the band, with guitarist Andy Piercy switching to bass and new guitarist John Russell stepping in.

"Laser love", which emerged in 1979, proved to be something of a hotchpotch album, involving 5 different producers including Muff Winwood, Rupert Prine and the band themselves. Understandably this impacts on the continuity of the album, but perhaps in the new age era such things were less important. The LP has the standard pop structure of two sides containing 5 songs of radio friendly length and structure. The best known of these is probably the chart single "One rule for you" but in reality it is interchangeable with most of the tracks on the album.

Put simply, there is nothing prog about this album. at all. Tracks such as "Laser love" and "One rule for you" offer decent quality pop with a punk tinge, but that is all they offer. There are similarities with the Boomtown Rats in particular, the punk connections being similarly superficial in nature. Most of the tracks feature dominant synth backing tracks, which now sound very much of their time, but back in 1979 would have still been rather novel. In that sense, the band were one of the leaders towards the sounds of the 80's.

There are two slight exceptions to the new wave/punk pop, and that is the instrumentals "Joy" and "Timestar". While still firmly rooted in pop, these virtuoso synth performances are superb workouts, and its lots of fun too. The latter seems to be loosely based on "Telstar", a classic single from the early 1960's.

Many bands have made transitions form one genre to another. Such changes can often be a firm indication of ambition, and a willingness to test the waters in others areas. In most cases though, vestiges of the bands previous work can be heard somewhere along the way. It is rare for a band to make such a substantial and dramatic change from one album to the next as we witness here. The only link between ATF's first album and this one is that the line up is substantially the same. In its own right, this is not a bad new wave/punk pop album. That though is all that it is.

This DVD was produced during LEB I SOL's 30th Anniversary Tour in summer 2006. It includes concert footage taken from two performances at wonderful antique theatre venues in ex Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Ohrid and Bitola respectively.
The selection of compositions is excellent; a fair balance between the early fusion and later mainstream hit material, with more space provided for the former (to pure joy of devoted prog and jazz rock lovers!). The band is reunited in its original line-up with Koki Dimusevski on Yamaha keyboards, so it is very good decision to include as many tracks from first three fusion masterpiece albums (where he was the band member) as possible. It's amazing how the time passed has just re-enforced the power of these excellent musicians, so that I almost recall myself being at one of their concerts in early 1980s when they were amongst the top 5 Yugoslavian rock attractions. To disgust of mine and of my fellow townsmen's, LEB I SOL concert was cancelled in Sarajevo after several unsuccessful attempts this year, thanks to the unprofessional and disastrous management, so this DVD presents a sort of condolences for the ones eager for artistically minded music.

Stefanovski plays his guitar better than ever, making her cry and weep like a baby or a monster alike. Arsovski's trademark fretless bass is powerful as ever, providing leading melodic lines in several of his compositions ("Kako ti drago", "Rucni rad", "Bistra voda"...). Tavitijan again shows his percussion capabilities as one of the best drummers in former Yugoslavia of all times, and Dimusevski's keyboards deliver spacey arrangements, atmospherics (especially in early fusion instrumentals) and strong solo parts. The last third of the video is reserved for more popular hit songs with Stefanovski singing lead vocals and these tracks ("Cuvam noc od budnih", "Skopje", "Cukni vo drvo".) are far better in their live versions performed here than in their original studio albums. The last song of the show "Uci me majko karaj me" is another cover of Macedonian traditional title, which had only surfaced before on the poor "Live in New York" album. The dynamic camera and photography (occasional black and white shots on Dimusevski, Tavitijan's visual shot from his bass drum membrane.) provide excellent visual experience and 5.1 system is enabled.

The rest of DVD contains short excerpts from interviews of all four members + some other persons unknown to me (journalists, producers I presume...), unfortunately only in Macedonian language. At least, my copy doesn't have the subtitles option, but I can't really complain because it is not a legal one :(, and I sort of understand Macedonian. Finally, a new track titled "Raspukala Sar planina" is an excellent contemporary folk-fusion followed by a nice video clip of the band recording/rehearsing in studio.

If only all the other old, mature rock artists from the past could bring us equally stunning performances such as this one. And I mean both the former Yugoslavian and the worldwide music scene!

Trace to holenderskie trio grające rock progresywny. Zespół został założony przez Ricka van der Lindena w 1974 roku po odejściu trzech muzyków z innego holenderskiego zespołu Ekseption. Powstali w 1974 roku i wydali swój debiutancki album „Trace” w 1974 roku. Muzykę zespołu charakteryzowały złożone aranżacje i skomplikowana praca instrumentalna, a ich kompozycje często zawierały mieszankę rocka, jazzu i wpływów klasycznych. Trace wydało w sumie trzy albumy. Trace było dość popularne w Europie i zyskało lojalnych fanów wśród fanów rocka progresywnego. Jednak nigdy nie osiągnęło powszechnego sukcesu komercyjnego i rozpadło się pod koniec lat 70., ponownie łącząc się z Ekseption. Pomimo tego muzyka zespołu nadal jest doceniana przez fanów rocka progresywnego.

Soledad Pastorutti to jedna z najważniejszych postaci współczesnej muzyki argentyńskiej. Urodziła się 12 października 1980 roku w niewielkim miasteczku Arequito, w prowincji Santa Fe. Już od najmłodszych lat była związana z muzyką ludową, wychowując się w atmosferze silnie zakorzenionej w tradycjach folklorystycznych Argentyny. Jej talent objawił się bardzo wcześnie, a prawdziwy przełom nastąpił, gdy jako nastolatka wystąpiła na prestiżowym festiwalu folkloru w Cosquín. Ten moment otworzył jej drzwi do ogólnokrajowej kariery i uczynił z niej symbol odrodzenia muzyki folkowej wśród młodego pokolenia. Debiutancki album Poncho al viento, wydany w 1996 roku, odniósł ogromny sukces i szybko przyniósł jej popularność. Soledad wyróżniała się nie tylko mocnym, charakterystycznym głosem, ale także niezwykłą energią sceniczną i autentycznością. W swoich utworach sięgała po tradycyjne formy argentyńskiego folkloru, takie jak chacarera czy zamba, jednocześnie nadając im nowoczesne brzmienie. Dzięki temu folklor przestał być postrzegany wyłącznie jako muzyka starszego pokolenia, a zaczął przemawiać także do młodszych słuchaczy.
