...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Trzeci album nowojorczyków z Malignancy. Ekstremalnie brutalna dawka technicznego death metalu! Dla fanów MORTICIAN, SUFFOCATION, DYING FETUS, DEVOURMENT, WORMED. Originally I started listening to this album thinking that I am going to hate it. Why? Because it's different and for a cult classic band such as Malignancy that already put out a handful of amazing releases, it's not always the best idea to change sound and style. While I was listening to this release for the first 1-2 times I thought this was just a toned-down version of Intrauterine Cannibalism when in reality this is much much more than that. First things first, Roger is back in the band although this time he takes up the bass duties and leaves the drumming to Mike Heller. The fact that he is back in the band didn't really excite me all that much until I heard the amazing bass sound they are working with. It's loud, it's fast and it's an all-around amazing piece of a technical element that they managed to sneak into their mostly riff-heavy music. The riffs on this record are even better than they were on Inhuman Grotesqueries since they are actually a lot more memorable than they were on the previous record. I think at this point in their career it's pretty obvious that Danny Nelson's vocals are always top-notch both in terms of brutality and variety. This doesn't change this time either. The really low and guttural growls sometimes mixed with the high-pitched screams of this guy is just insane. To start of the album, we get a strange intro with a bunch of samples cut together, but luckily Roger didn't bring along his Mortician style, so this intro sits well below 1 minute and the only purpose of it, is to lead into Type Zero Civilization (which starts of with one of the greatest screams you will hear from the band). It's a fast-paced track as usual, and the riff with the technical "seasoning" is a real treat to my ears. If you were to compare this song to anything from their debut album you would hear how they evolved over time. The vocals are "cleaner" just like the production, the bass is even louder, the riffs that were mostly chugging brutal death metal riffs are now switched to technical death metal riffs with occasional chugs here and there. It's kinda funny how the slam elements are basically the only thing that hasn't changed over 13 years. Yes, they are still here, but this time they make a strong presence. Breakdowns here and there, but nothing deathcore level of time-wasting, so they don't end up being all that annoying. The band also managed to take up a new habit. They actually made songs longer than 4 minutes!!! 2 of them to be exact. While the first one Separatists is also a riff-heavy track (at least from my point of view) it starts out with an amazing acoustic intro and goes into few licks which turns into a breakdown soon enough. After that breakdown, the rest of the song is a lot better to be fair. The second 4-minute song, on the other hand, is a lot less interesting. The Breach starts off with a break-neck speed riff, but it quickly transforms into some technical wankery (and not the good kind of tech-wankery). It could have used less technical riffs and more of the already amazing high-pitched screams and we would have gotten an amazing song, but in this case, we just got a song that should have been 2 minutes but is 4 minutes and it's not necessarily able to fill up this time period. Overall other than the very last track, this album is all killer, no filler. Every second of it screams that it was made by the very best and at this point, 3 full-lengths, 2 EPs and 2 splits into their career I can safely say they are one of the best (if not the very best) and most consistent brutal death metal band ever. Feast for the Damned ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. Intro 0:47 2. Type Zero Civilization 2:53 3. Eugenics 2:55 4. Extinction Event 3:03 5. Global Systemic Collapse 3:51 6. Cataclysmic Euphoria 3:17 7. Separatists 4:44 8. Monstrous Indifference 1:23 9. Cryptobiosis 2:28 10. Creatures Of Conformity 2:53 11. The Breach 4:06 ..::OBSADA::.. Vocals - Danny Nelson Guitar - Ron Kachnic Bass - Roger J. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Drummer, composer, lyricist, improviser, cultural theorist and the individual largely responsible for the existence of ReR/Recommended records, Chris Cutler (like his longtime musical sparring partner Fred Frith) has cast a long shadow over avant rock for over 30 years. He first came to prominence when he joined Henry Cow in 1971, but he had been active on London's psychedelic/underground scene since the mid 60s, and in the early 70s formed the Ottawa Music Company (a large collective of rock composers) with sometime Egg/Hatfields keyboards player Dave Stewart. When Henry Cow ceased working in 1978, he was instrumental in setting up Recommended Records along with Nick Hobbs, Henry Cow's ex-manager, initially as a distribution service and subsequently as a label in its own right. He also formed the excellent Art Bears with Fred Frith and Dagmar Krause, in which he was lyricist as well as the drummer. Since then he has been involved in a bewildering number of projects, often simultaneously, including The Residents, Pere Ubu, News From Babel, Cassiber, Aqsak Maboul, The EC Nudes and P53. He has also worked as an improviser, notably with Fred Frith (see seperate entry), Thomas DiMuzio and Zeena Parkins. Further to all this, he has also developed a unique electric drum kit - to quote from the man himself: "There are no samples, pads or triggers, just acoustic drums amplified and modified with standard electronic processors ... All this is run into a small 16 channel mixer and out through various standard pedals and guitar effects" (from the sleevenotes to Solo). More details can be found on his website. At various points in its evolution, this kit can be heard on all his post Henry Cow recordings. To date there have been only 2 Cutler solo releases; Solo is live improvisations on the electric drumkit, while Twice Around The World is an album of soundscapes created for London based Resonance FM and described as 'an experiment in listening'. The discography also includes 2 albums recorded with electronics performer Thomas DiMuzio (who has also worked with 5UUs) and one with Zeena Parkins (News From Babel, Skeleton Crew). A masterful and highly original drummer, he is well worth catching live where his unique style can be seen as well as heard. All of his albums can be recommended, but his collaborations with Thomas DiMuzio are perhaps the best place to start, in particular the masterful Dust. See also Cutler/Frith. A seminal figure in the RIO scene, Cutler's solo and collaborative works are an essential addition to the RIO/Avant prog category. 10 CDs, 1 DVD, 80pp booklet and box. To make public a mass of unreleased material I decided to wrap this musical collection into a box. These 10 CDs (and a DVD) include over five hours of unreleased materials, my three previously released solo CDs (‘solo’, ‘twice around the earth’ and ‘there and back again’); plus a double CD collection of tracks spanning 50 years of official recordings (It Makes Sense to Me), as well as the 22-hour radio programme I made for Radio Art Zone last year (that’s on the DVD). 36 hours. Comes with 2 fat books of documentation, artwork, photographs, published and unpublished texts. for the avoidance of all confusion: of the 5 CDs of 'unreleased materials', 100 copies of 4 of them were privately printed for japan (as CC100, 200, 300 & 400), so a few of you may have them. CC500, the two books and the DVD appear for the first time. The subscription edition is numbered and signed and comes with an extra CD not otherwise available. An experiment in listening. These compositions are an offshoot of the daily soundscape programme I ran for Resonance FM radio between July 2001-2002, which consisted of commissioned real-time recordings made all around the world between 23.30 and midnight GMT (the time of the broadcast). This CD begins with material from these broadcasts confecting, as it were, two composites of the Earth and a few of its inhabitants, somewhat analogous to what an impossible satellite ear with pinpoint acuity might hear in transit - plus one ear-cleaning stretch between them, taken from a single hear-point. I have tried to make these pieces both open and to work on parallel levels: not only do they have their own narrative and aesthetic qualities, but I hope they also offer a meditation on listening and not listening, interpretation and structure, chance and microphonics. The list of ears around the world who supplied basic material is too long to print here, but it includes many names familiar from these catalogues, and many from the still young soundscape and phonograpic community. Full details of people and places are given in the booklet, along with artwork and thorough notes. You have to trust me on this, it's a really engaging record. Sometimes unbelieveable. I don't think you'll regret giving it a chance. Record what you're doing right now. Don't worry about the fidelity, just hit "record" on your walkman or minicassette player, attach it to your pocket and we'll take care of the rest. Yes, I'm interested in what you get on tape. I really do want to hear how your refrigerator door sounds, and what's playing on television through the wall. The traffic outside is of particular interest, as is the conversation of whoever might be sitting nearby, or across the hall, or downstairs. When you have about thirty minutes, stop the tape, and send it to me. Don't worry, I'll take the best snippet, and immortalize your mundane vignette. In fact, ask a couple of your friends to do the same thing, and I'll make all of you stars. Avant-stars! If this sounds like a waste of time, maybe you need some convincing. British experimental musician Chris Cutler (Henry Cow, Art Bears, Pere Ubu, head of ReR Records) has assembled some of the most interesting aural moments in the lives of other like-minded musicians. He did this for Out of the Blue Radio, a broadcast project funded by the London Musicians Coop from July 2002 to July 2003, using snippets of sound taken from all over the world. The only catch was, his contributors had to record their sound during the time the broadcast would air-- 11:30 pm to midnight, in whatever time zone the person lived. Cutler took the 30-minute records and aired them for the program, unaltered. Think of it as reality entertainment of a sort. For Twice Around the Earth, Cutler went a step further, editing 43 of the recordings he received into short snippets, and arranged them chronologically into the lengthy title track. Additionally, the piece follows the contributors geographically, acting as a sound guide, literally twice around the world. On this CD, Cutler also includes his recording "Lux", taken from in the inside of a cafeteria, and "Blue Winter": Thirty-four more contributor recordings selected and arranged by Cutler and kindred spirit/engineer Bob Drake. Since both "Twice Around the Earth" and "Blue Winter" feature dozens of short, physically disconnected segments of sound, you might expect a dizzying, disorienting experience. Far from it: the segments tend to dissolve into one another, and the overall effect is one of constantly shifting, but ever blending still life. The opening of the title track, the Blue Radio theme, replete with clock tower chimes, segues seamlessly into English composer John Scott's jogging along the Thames, which in turn transforms into David Lee Myers' Frog Lake, New York soundscape of, yes, frogs and crickets, moving right along to experimental sound design artist Thomas Dimuzio in San Francisco recording the noise outside his window, only to erupt in Hardy Fox's recording of piano at the Musee Mechanique, also in San Francisco. This is the pace of "Twice Around the World": technically breathless, but in practice, more like an ambient night train. The quieter moments (like Otomo Yoshihide's short Tokyo apartment recording, or the Hafler Trio's Andrew Mackenzie recording the Reykjavik air across the street from Björk's place) never seem far removed from the more boisterous ones (Jon Rose's overheard nightlife conversation in Australia, or the bizarre electronic noise of Haco and Christopher in Kobe, Japan), even when I know they're different in almost every way. Cutler's "Lux" unfolds more naturally, with uninterrupted activity from a Luxembourg cafeteria. Yes, you get the quiet roar of people talking, the clang of dishes, the squeak of rubber souls on marble, a lone, repeated piano motif in the distance, unintelligible loudspeaker announcements-- practically a greatest hits of urban interior ambience. Background noise it may be, but as with any number of sparse, free improv records, its effectiveness is rooted in an unpredictability even when I "know" exactly what is happening. Of course, there will be people who deny this is music at all, but I'm not sure that's the point. Cutler's document suggests that when the sounds around us are so intrinsically interesting, there's no need to frame them with structure or artifice. Dominique Leone ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. - 47. Twice Around The Earth (31:42) 48. Lux (13:52) 49. - 82. Blue Winter (21:46) ..::OBSADA::.. This composite was assembled by Chris Cutler at Studio Midi Pyrenees, France, and was engineered by Robert Drake. The introduction and Coda were made by Chris Cutler at the Elsenstudio, Berlin and were engineered by Lutz Glandien. The individual recordings heard were made by: John Scott, David Lee Myers, Tom Dimuzio, Hardy Fox, Nicholas Frances Chase, Daniel Van Beers, Brian Woodbury, Otomo Yoshihide, Brian Labycz, Haco & Christopher, Dickson Dee, Daniel Beban, Peter Cusak, David Kerman, Udi Koomran, Michael Northam, Marzio Carlessi, Michael Maksymenko, Andreas Hagerlüken, Chris Cutler, Will Menter, E.M.Thomas, Andrea Rocca, John Dreever, Tony Whitehead, Andrew McKenzie, Richard Windeyer, Jack Vees, Steve McLean, Phil Zampino, Carmen Borgia, Warren Burt, Annie Gosfield, Nic Collins, Chris deLaurentis, Toby Paddock, Bill Harkelroad, John Kennedy, Jim Denley, Philip Mar, Jon Rose and Warrick Swinney - and were all taken from their contributions to Out of the Blue Radio. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
Paweł Denys Incredibly impressed with Ingurgitating Oblivion's third effort Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light, I decided to venture back in their discography a bit. While this is by all means solid, there's really no signs that just one album later they would be a band that would not only write an avant-garde dissonant jazz-influenced 22 minute tech death epic dripping with alien atmosphere, but also somehow manage to make it sound amazing and not a pretentious, bloated pile of horse dung. On their sophomore Continuum of Absence they are not exactly your average death metal band, but they're also not that far removed. Continuum generally undulates between a really modern and busy not-quite-tech-death-but-getting-there sound and a thick, doomy dissonant lurching. While not exactly trailblazers of originality, and even if a Gorguts influence can be quite prominent of times, I'm glad that it's not just a rip off one or two obvious old school classics and call it a day sort of affair. Ingurgitating Oblivion (that name though - I had to look up "ingurgitating" to make sure it was a real word) are a busy band and have a fair amount of ideas to bounce about. How busy they are can be cool, but it also sometimes work to their detriment. While they're really good at the tech death aspect of their sound, sometimes they forget to let the music breathe. While not as common as the frantic buzz of twisting distortion and frantic blastbeats, the dissonant lurching portion of their sound would serve this function well if not for one thing. While the drummer is quite technically adept, he doesn't really know when to step back and allow for breathing room. During the more doomy churning he just keeps hammering away at the double bass, seemingly unaware of what the rest of the band is doing. It does seem that this is supposed to be death metal with a decent amount of atmosphere, but this doesn't really shine through as well as it could. While the dark ambient sections are pretty good, the production is a bit dry and dull. A thick murky atmosphere could have been achieved with ease in the slower sections, but the guitar tone just doesn't get the job done. That said, these parts are still cool and the music is much better off for having them. Still, the songs don't do very much to differentiate themselves from each other. In the end it just becomes a blur and I can't really recall any individual song having its own character or being a standout moment. I hope I'm not being needlessly harsh with this album because of what a massive improvement the next one would be. This is by all means a solid death metal album and above average. It's just not something I see myself coming back to very often, especially when the next one is a goddamn masterpiece (definitely my favourite death metal album of this year so far). ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. To chwila, gdy anioły rozwierają skrzydła i karmią przestrzeń swoim śpiewem. Pochmurne niebo tężeje szarością i gra w warcaby z wiatrem. Barwy. Kolory. Odcienie. Mogą być symbolem, emblematem zawierającym w sobie fragmenty naszych ukrytych zalet, sygnaturą naznaczającą cechy charakteru i temperament. To odważna projekcja. Cisza drzemiąca w szepcie nut, melodii i gitarowych fresków. Perry Angelillo to ciepły cynober. Szalony, ekspresyjny w każdym geście i słowie. Michel Renaud to malachit kanadyjskich lasów, zmysłowy wokal i barwa głosu, tajemnicza, uzbrojona w potężne moce. Natasha Lebrun - lawenda. Cudowna osoba, dyskretna i opiekuńcza. Natasha jest esencją subtelnego spokoju, oazą dyskrecji i fantastyczną artystką. Jest autorką okładki albumu, grafiki oraz zdjęć. Barbara Caron to błękit królewski: dystynkcja, elegancja i znakomite teksty. Esencja młodości połączona z uśmiechem pełnym niewinnego czaru. Andre Godbout – grafit, czyli powaga, naturalność i pasja. Wydawnictwo dostarcza znakomicie skonstruowany materiał muzyczny, bogatą paletę brzmień, finezyjne solówki gitarowe, efektowne klawisze i ciekawe teksty. Praca sekcji rytmicznej nadaje wyrazistości, podkreśla ważne frazy i buduje nastrój. Podejmuje ona niezmiernie istotne problemy współczesnego świata pełnego korupcji, okrucieństwa i niesprawiedliwości. „Paint Box” to już jedenasty album w dyskografii Kanadyjczyków i pierwszy nagrany z nowym wokalistą, Michelem Renaudem, którego głos zmienia nieco brzmienie grupy, jednocześnie zbliżając je do czasów ich debiutanckiego krążka „Mirror Of Insanity”. Pierwszy utwór na płycie, „Wake Up The Child”, rozpoczyna się pochodem mrocznych klawiszy i basu. Emanuje z niego powaga i tajemniczość. Tekst piętnuje otaczającą nas rzeczywistość: dwulicowość i kłamliwość polityków, korupcję i pęd do pieniądza. „Wake up the child that is sleeping inside of you. Don’t believe the man with a tie, don’t forget happiness corrupted into lies, don’t forget that you can shine...”. Są tu niesamowite zmiany rytmu i charakteru muzyki. Koronkowa gitara przeplata się z mocnym basem i żarliwą perkusją. W tle można odnaleźć nieśmiałe motywy smyczkowe. Utwór płynnie przechodzi w instrumentalny „Us”. Kolejna instrumentalna perełka, obok „Us”, to prześliczna kompozycja zatytułowana „Poland”. Chwila, gdy opowieść dobiega końca i jednocześnie nabiera rozpędu. Utwór ten jest niczym ogrody Wersalu. Bogactwo brzmień, zmienna stylistyka i symfoniczny rozmach spojone są mocnym i ambitnym tekstem. Ile tu inspirujących solówek Simona - delikatnych jak pianka na powierzchni ciemnego espresso, innym razem drapieżnych niczym pantera. Ile fantastycznych linii wokalnych i misternych sekwencji perkusji. „Tie” to przepyszny deser finalizujący niezwykłe przyjęcie zorganizowane przez grupę Red Sand. „Paint Box” jest kolejną fantastycznym albumem kanadyjskiego zespołu. Piękno muzyki, zaangażowane teksty, efektowne aranżacje, symfoniczny rozmach i emocje zatopione w bursztynie wyobraźni… Czy trzeba czegoś więcej? Olga Walkiewicz ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Potencjał, jaki tkwi w człowieku, poznajemy gdy pozwolimy mu wypowiedzieć się do końca, kiedy ma okazję rozwinąć skrzydła bez jakichkolwiek ograniczeń, w przestrzeni przepełnionej pasją twórczą i całkowitą swobodą. Tak, to wolność napędza mechanizm ludzkich możliwości. Daje wiarę i siłę, aby realizować swoje wizje. Album „Origin Of The Storm” jest kontynuacją płyty „Only Human” z 2021 roku. Mastering to dzieło Karla Grooma (Threshold), a okładkę albumu zaprojektował Andy Tillison (tak…, dokładnie ten Andy Tillison - frontman grupy The Tangent). „The Same Life” rozpoczyna się pełnym ognia intro, po którym następuje część zdecydowanie wolniejsza, nastrojowa i pełna refleksji. Peter Jones dodaje swoim głosem dyskretnego czaru i niesamowitości. Potrafi stworzyć z nut barwny kalejdoskop, rozszczepić w pryzmacie muzyki szarość wieczoru i świetlistość poranka. To chwile zatrzymane w pamięci, niczym owad w bursztynie. Lee powraca do nich muzycznym wehikułem czasu. Stapia łagodny dźwięk gitary z miękkim akompaniamentem fortepianu. Peter Jones wchodzi swoim miękkim wokalem w krainę słodkiej melancholii, kruszy lód smutku, zapisuje w pamiętniku najskrytsze marzenia. Solówka gitarowa nadaje tej kompozycji rozmachu i zmysłowości. Wszystko jest niesamowicie dopracowane i brzmi doskonale. Aż trudno uwierzyć, że Lee tworzył ten album w trakcie równoległej pracy z Galahad nad płytą „The Long Goodbye”. „Isolation/Disconnection” to utwór kontrastów, zmian tempa i nastroju. „Hole In The Sky” emanuje spokojem i nostalgią. Fortepian buduje fundament - dyskretnie, znikając w tle i ustępując sekcji rytmicznej i wokalowi. Klasyczna gitara snuje koronkowy wątek otulony rytmem perkusji. Po chwili właściwa solówka wybucha tysiącem barw. „When I Need A Friend” to mój faworyt, utwór o podobnej sile rażenia, co „The Hands Of Time” z albumu „Only Human” z 2021 roku. Cudowne spectrum muzyczne, niesamowita warstwa liryczna, aksamitny głos Petera Jonesa i esencja blasku płynąca spod palców Lee Abrahama. To prawdziwa perełka z tekstem o niezaprzeczalnej mocy, jaką ma w sobie przyjaźń. Album zamyka jeszcze jedna długa, dziesięciominutowa kompozycja „Siren’s Song”. To element „baśniowego świata” na „Origin Of The Storm”. Łączą się tutaj dwa muzyczne światy: epicki - przesiąknięty czarowną bajkowością, jaśniejący światłem połamanego chmurami księżyca i ten zwyczajny - szary, sklejony narracją o ułomnej rzeczywistości. To piękne zakończenie i kolejny niezmiernie udany solowy album Lee Abrahama. Olga Walkiewicz ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. Origin Of The Storm 04:20 2. The Same Life 08:51 3. Chalk Hill 08:09 4. Isolation/Disconnection 08:51 5. Recorded on May 19, 2023, the show took place in front of just under 900 fans, marking the smallest venue the band had played in the UK or Europe in over 35 years. Returning to their roots, the band performed a set packed with hits and deep cuts spanning their entire career, delivering an unforgettable experience. The setlist included iconic tracks like 'Bringin' On The Heartbreak', 'Hysteria' and 'Pour Some Sugar On Me', which had the crowd singing every word. The atmosphere of the venue, along with the band's tight performance, brought an incredible intensity that's rarely found in larger arenas. ...( TrackList )... 01. Action 02. Fire It Up 03.
