Truly a one-of-a-kind monster, ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF is a 5-piece instrumental band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Since their full-length debut in 2006 the band has added a bass player to go along with the triple guitar harmonies and romantic melodies. This album firmly establishes ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF as one of the premier instrumental metal band in the world.


"Aykroyd" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Canadian progressive metal act Electro Quarterstaff. The album was released through Willowtip Records in October 2011.
Electro Quarterstaff play an instrumental and extremely technical type of progressive metal on "Aykroyd". While it may seem strange when the music doesn't vocals and lyrics the band are actually very good at incorporating humour in their music to go along with the cartoonish cover artwork. The humouristic element works like a charm. Always delivered in a tasteful yet wacky manner. The tracks are querky, structurally complex and delivered in a convincing high energy fashion. Electro Quarterstaff features a drummer, a bassist and no less than three guitarists. The team of guitarists compliment each other well throughout the album. Dissonant chords, odd melodies and harmonies which threatens to bend your mind at any time. Backed by the powerful and well playing rythm section, the guitar attack is something out of the ordinary. While there are some mellower moments on the album like the opening track "The Wolf Shall Inherit The Moon", "Aykroyd" is generally a very busy and challenging affair that takes some time to sink in. Upon repeated listens the album reveals quite a few layers though and if you're up for a challenge it's definitely an album I can recommend.

We're talking high level musicianship, a great organic sound production and some pretty intriguing songwriting. I'd say somewhere between a 3.5 to a 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.

Goldfinger to amerykańska grupa wykonująca muzykę z pogranicza takich gatunków jak: ska punk, pop punk czy punk rock. Zespół powstał w 1994 roku w Kalifornii z inicjatywy Johna Feldmanna oraz Simona Williamsa. Muzycy do współpracy zaprosili Darrina Pfeiffera i Steve’a Geigera, później zastąpiony przez Charliego Paulsona. Simon Williams, zainspirowany filmem z serii o Jamesie Bondzie, zaproponował nazwę Goldfinger. Tego samego roku zespół nagrał pierwsze demo Richter, które zyskało uznanie wytwórni Mojo Records. Kaleko Urdangak to punkowy zespół z Kraju Basków (Hiszpania), który powstał w 2011 roku z inicjatywy członków radiowego programu oi-punkowego Kaleko Mobida. Grupa wywodzi się z Bergary i tworzy muzykę w klimacie Oi!, skinhead rock’n’roll i punka, łącząc surową gitarę z energiczną rytmiką i tekstami śpiewanymi po baskijsku, hiszpańsku i angielsku. Ich debiutancki album Eman Bai! (2012) przyniósł krótkie, energetyczne utwory o tematyce kultury, życia ulicznego i osobistych doświadczeń. W kolejnych latach Kaleko Urdangak kontynuowali działalność wydając kolejne EP-ki i płyty, m.in. Bizirik (2021) oraz EP Haria eten ez dadin (2025), a także występując na koncertach i festiwalach, co ugruntowało ich miejsce na scenie punk-Oi! w Hiszpanii i poza nią. Tradycją są już przedświąteczne koncerty Steve’a „h” Hogartha pod szyldem „h natural”, na których występuje on sam akompaniując sobie na pianinie, a setlisty często układane są na bieżąco, zgodnie z życzeniami publiczności. Sporadycznie zdarza mu się także grać solowe przestawienia w innych okresach roku. I właśnie zapis takiego wyjątowego koncertu, z 3 lutego 2024 roku, z pięknej Sali Sinopoli znajdującej się w Parco della Musica w Rzymie, ukazał się właśnie na dwóch płytach kompaktowych oraz jednej Blu-Ray pod wspólnym tytułem „S.P.Q.R.”, czyli „Senatus Populusque Romanus” („Senat i Lud Rzymski”).

Nie jest to pierwszy album nagrany przez wokalistę Marillion w Wiecznym Mieście. W 2015 roku wystąpił on w tym samym kompleksie, ale w mniejszej sali (Petrassi), a na scenie w części utworów wystąpił z nim rzymski zespół RanestRane. Rejestrację tamtego koncertu można zobaczyć i wysłuchać na wydawnictwie „Friends, Romans” wydanym w roku następnym.

Roland Stephen Hoggarth, jak brzmi prawdziwe nazwisko artysty, rozpoczął od, w większości mówionej, luźnej interpretacji utworu „Thankyou Whoever You Are”, podczas której wita się on z licznie przybyłą publicznością. Potem przychodzi czas na tytułowe nagranie z płyty „Afraid Of Sunlight”. Nie ukrywam, że bardzo je lubię, a w takiej surowej aranżacji brzmi równie przepięknie, co w wykonaniu całego zespołu. Nastrój pozostaje bez zmian podczas prezentacji pieśni „White Paper” czy zagranego po niej coveru utworu z repertuaru Leonarda Cohena, „Famous Blue Raincoat”. Przy okazji Steve zdradza, że ten występ będzie się różnił od innych jego solowych koncertów, gdyż tylko krótki jego fragment może mieć spontaniczną setlistę. Ożywienie wprowadzają pierwsze takty „Cover My Eyes” i zagrany zaraz po nim „Three Minute Boy”, w którym tradycyjnie sporo do zaśpiewania miała publiczność. Z tego też powodu „h” często po niego sięga. Tu jednak postanowił zaskoczyć publiczność i po fragmencie zakończonym słowami „It’s like a dream, like Elvis and The Beatles” rozpoczął wykonywanie utworu „All You Need Is Love” z repertuaru tych drugich, by potem powrócić z finałem pieśni z płyty „Radiation”. To właśnie jest ta magia występów pod szyldem „h natural” – nigdy nie wiadomo czym wokalista zaskoczy zgromadzonych przed sceną.

Podobnie jak miało to miejsce na płycie „Friends, Romans”, w trakcie wykonywania utworu „The Deep Water” z solowej płyty „Ice Cream Genius” do Steve’a dołączyli panowie Maurizio Meo (kontrabas), Daniele Pomo (perkusja, instrumenty perkusyjne), Massimo Pomo (gitary akustyczne) oraz Riccardo Romano (instrumenty klawiszowe, gitara, mandolina, harfa), czyli grupa RanestRane, dodając kompozycji transowo – orientalnego klimatu. Już razem z nimi wokalista zaprezentował pieśń „Sounds That Can’t Be Made”, w którym solo Rothery’ego zastąpione zostało partią graną przez Riccardo na harmonium, a widzowie mogli ponownie rozgrzać swoje gardła wykrzykując melodię wykonywaną, tym razem przez Massimo Pomo, na gitarze. Po chwili „h” zapowiada „coś starszego” i, słysząc entuzjazm zgromadzonych, dodaje, że „nie aż tak starego”, mając oczywiście na myśli coś z repertuaru z pierwszych czterech płyt Marillion, w której to grupie część fanów uważa go wciąż za „tego nowego”. Już od… 35 lat. Muzycy rozpoczynają absolutnie rewelacyjną wersję „Waiting To Happen”, w której sympatyczny włoski klawiszowiec, a właściwie multiinstrumentalista, sięga po harfę. Kolejny utwór zadedykowany został wielkiemu fanowi zarówno Marillion, jak i RanestRane, Norbertowi Stefaniemu, który zmarł nagle 1 października 2023 roku. Ze sceny wybrzmiała pieśń „Estonia”, której słowa refrenu (“No one leaves you when you live in their heart and mind. And no one dies, they just move to the other side”) nabrały dodatkowego znaczenia.

Po tej dawce emocji muzycy udali się na krótką przerwę, po której pojawili się na scenie w towarzystwie ośmioosobowego chóru Flowin Chords pod dyrekcją Margherity Flore. W tak licznym składzie zaprezentowali przepiękny song z ostatniej płyty Marillion inspirowany twórczością wspomnianego wcześniej Leonarda Cohena, czyli „The Crow And The Nightingale”. Udział dodatkowych wokalistów ewidentnie jeszcze bardziej podnosi urodę tej pieśni, podobnie jak kolejnej, stanowiącej najciekawszy fragment solowej płyty pana „h” – „Nothing To Declare”. Po nim artyści sięgnęli po najstarszy w tym zestawie utwór napisany przez Steve’a – „Acid Rain” z płyty „Reccuring Dreams” formacji The Europeans, w której występował on w latach 80. Podstawowy set kończy magiczna interpretacja utworu „Go!”, a na bis wybrzmiewa nagranie, w którym oryginalnie słychać chór, z tym że dziecięcy, czyli „Man Of A Thousand Faces”. Jak sam artysta przyznaje, było to dla niego dziwne doświadczenie, bo po raz pierwszy śpiewał go… na siedząco. Na finał muzycy przygotowali kolejny bardzo lubiany przez fanów song, „Easter”. Tym razem w końcowej części możemy usłyszeć wreszcie wykonaną na żywo partię chóru, zamiast wspomaganych taśmą głosów Pete’a Trewavasa i czasem Marka Kelly’ego, jak zazwyczaj ma to miejsce podczas koncertów Marillion. Tu ponownie solo gitarowe zostało zastąpione partią harmonium w wykonaniu Romano. Może to nie to samo, ale brzmi to co najmniej interesująco. Jeszcze ukłon czternastu osób występujących na scenie i wieczór z „tym drugim” wokalistą Marillion dobiega końca.

W wersji video zamieszczonej na Blu-Rayu nie otrzymujemy żadnych fajerwerków. Skromne, statyczne oświetlenie tworzy intymny klimat. Tu ma rządzić muzyka i tak właśnie jest. Zaproponowane aranżacje pokazują nieco inne oblicze zarówno pieśni z repertuaru Marillion, coverów, jak i nagrań solowych. Przez to wydawnictwo prezentuje się nieco ciekawiej od niemal corocznie publikowanych płyt koncertowych jego macierzystego zespołu. Dwie godziny spędzone w towarzystwie Steve’a i jego przyjaciół z Rzymu mijają niepostrzeżenie.

Rok się kończy. Podsumowania ulubionych płyt w różnych kategoriach zasadniczo mam już wybrane. Wśród wydawnictw „live” na pewno w czołówce znajdzie się miejsce dla „S.P.Q.R.”, bo to naprawdę doskonały album, którego ostatnio słucham niemal bez przerwy.

Muzyka emanuje zimną, zmechanizowaną mocą z niemal nieludzko szybką, absurdalnie precyzyjną perkusją i riffami. Rytmy mają industrialny charakter – kłują, walą, szarpią, niczym w nieustającym, zacinającym się wirze pneumatycznych, tłokowych uderzeń.
Dźwięk przywołuje w myślach obrazy gigantycznej, 'robotycznej' fabryki na najwyższych obrotach, produkującej złowrogie szeregi uzbrojonych cyborgów gotowych do zniszczenia naszej kruchej ludzkości.

Through a very industrial sound, Devolved is able to push the driving force of their riffs forward. This is an album that sounds like either Fear Factory or Strapping Young Lad in this nature. The songs aren’t the most complex ever and maintain some straightforward guitar patterns. The band has a ferocious nature that will appeal to a number of Heavy Metal fans. The more Avant-Garde fans of the genre might want to look elsewhere as this is straightforward material overall.

The harsh vocals that are placed on top of the music recall the two aforementioned bands again and the crushing riffs rarely devolve into anything too progressively interesting. Instead, people looking for something similar to recent Fear Factory material should find a lot to like here as well as anyone looking for industrial metal at all. There is also a The Faceless comparison that can be made and the added instruments will appeal to fans of that band as well. An early highlight to be found here is 'Reprisal Of The Damned' early in the disc’s overall timeframe. The drumming needs to be clinical and precise with this type of material and the band is solid in this area. The vocals are the least appealing of the performance aspects here because they serve more as a place holder and don’t stick out in any way. The heavy and jagged riffs of this band may also appeal to fans of Meshuggah, but I believe the aforementioned bands are better reference points.

One final note has to be given to Nile because when Devolved is in its most Death Metal state, they sound a bit like them. 'Collateral Damage' has enough Death Metal sounds to be compared to this disc alone. There are a number of Heavy Metal fans that will be able to derive enjoyment from "Reprisal", but it’s really only a very good release overall.

Here’s a unique and challenging album from the usually predictable Unique Leader Records. Hailing from Australia but residing in Los Angeles, Devolved have 3 previous full length albums under their belts, none of which I’ve heard, so I had nothing to compare this blind purchase to. My last blind purchase was also a Unique Leader release, Inanimate Existence‘s excellent tech death record, Liberation Through Hearing, so I thought this might be along the same lines.

A little bit wrong I was.

What we have here is a interesting style of metal that mixes chunky almost cyber, futuristic style of metal along lines of Fear Factory and Strapping Young Lad, with some djent-y leanings like Meshuggah and such, but then inject the whole affair with bursts of warp speed technical death metal similar to the likes of Beneath the Massacre or even Origin. Cyber-tech-djent-death- metal I guess? Some may detect a hint of deathcore or metalore, especially in the more mid range vocals, but don’t let genre tags put you off a savage display of mechanical technical mastery.

Regardless of everything at play here- it’s impeccably played with a incredible level of skill and precision that warrants your attention. Drummer John Sankey, who has played in pre Tim Yeung Divine Heresy as well as a live performer for Fear Factory, is literally a machine behind the kit giving the music its considerable mechanical/industrial tinge. But the trio isn’t just content to just lurch and stagger with djent-y muted riffs. They spent about 1/2 of the album delivering surgically technical death metal that’s on par with most of the label’s offerings but with a cleaner, intelligent, cyber edge rather than purely guttural brutality.

Both styles are delivered impressively from the throttling twiddly tech death assault of openers “Systematic Avenger”, and “Accelerated Human Degeneration” through the deliberate lurch of “Embodiment”, blistering mechanized thrash of “Apocalyptic Visionary” and massive lope of “Corrupted Mind Processor”. Though I could have done without the spoken words and samples of instrumental closer “Inanimate Infinity” . A few futuristic sample and robotic whispers keep the album clinically robotic, but nothing that takes it into pure cyber metal territory. And the album ends with a cover of Exhorder‘s “(Cadence of) The Dirge”, a very cool and left field cover for the band’s style, giving a Southern crawl a mean cybernetic edge.

Devolved sits stylistically and thematically somewhere in the ball park of The Faceless, Anomalous, Vildjharta and Fear Factory, so if a excellent mix of all those bands and styles appeals to you, go ahead and grab this late year surprise from Unique Leader Records.

Sama nazwa zespołu to fajna gra słów, okładka wydawnictwa również nastraja pozytywnie. Jeszcze przed włożeniem płyty do odtwarzacza, nastroiłem się zatem na odbiór sztuki inteligentnej.

VERMOUTH uprawia muzykę, której ważną i integralną częścią są teksty. Już recytowany wstęp ustawia słuchacza na pro-refleksyjne tory. Rockowe instrumentarium, czysty wokal z wyraźną górką i zadziorem w bardziej emocjonalnych fragmentach, to elementy charakterystyczne dla zespołu. Niewiele ponad półgodziny zaangażowanej muzyki utrzymanej w średnich i wolnych tempach sprawia, że nie mamy przesytu konwencją. Bo tak po prawdzie nie jest to muzyka z rodzaju łatwych i rozrywkowych.
Tematyka tekstów, nie traktuje raczej o aspektach rozrywkowych, całości towarzyszy raczej nostalgia i rozmyślanie. Jeśli człowiek w danym momencie właśnie tego oczekuje od towarzyszącej mu muzyce, „Dlaczego tak jest?” będzie dobrym kompanem samotnego wieczoru z lampką wermutu.

Całość odbieram pozytywnie, aczkolwiek widzę potencjał do ewentualnej ewolucji. Pierwszym elementem, który tu wskażę, to fakt że teksty bywają wyłożone łopatologicznie, bez zbytniego owijania w bawełnę, przy tym bywają nieco przytłaczające. Niewiele mam krytycznych uwag do sfery muzycznej, aczkolwiek przy gitarze solowej widziałbym nieco inaczej skręcone brzmienie. Nie zawsze miałem takie wrażenie w nieco bardziej dynamicznych utworach jest ok, ale w kawałkach spokojniejszych coś bym w tej kwestii zmienił. BTW tracklista wypisana na booklecie coś się nie zgadza ze stanem faktycznym. Przyznam też że mówione rozpoczęcie i zakończenie nieco mnie razi w kwestii obcowania z albumem w całości. Swobodnie można by te tracki sobie darować.

Trochę mi wstyd, że wcześniej nie znałem tej kapeli, która początek działalności datuje na czasy kiedy ja właśnie zaczynałem zagłębiać się w muzykę rockową. Cóż, pewnie minęliśmy się… Natomiast nazwa VERMOUTH warta jest zapamiętania i będę od tej płyty z uwagą śledził ich poczynania.
