Zebrahead to amerykański zespół rockowy pochodzący z La Habra w Kalifornii, założony w 1996 roku. Oryginalny skład tworzyli Justin Mauriello (gitara, wokal), Greg Bergdorf (gitara), Ben Osmundson (gitara basowa) oraz Ed Udhus (perkusja). Do zespołu dołączył także Ali Tabatabaee jako raper i współwokalista, co nadało ich muzyce wymiar unikalnej mieszanki punk rocka i hip-hopu. Muzycznie Zebrahead łączy style takie jak punk rock, pop-punk, rapcore i alternatywny rock. Ich brzmienie charakteryzuje się energetycznymi riffami, melodyjnymi liniami wokalnymi i rapowanymi. fragmentami. Wydali trzynaście albumów studyjnych. Wstawka zawiera ósmy album studyjny zespołu zawierający covery znanych hitów popowych.

Birdflesh to weterani szwedzkiego grindcore’a. Powstali już w 1992 roku i właśnie wydają szósty album. Zapewne nie zawiodą swoich fanów, gdyż po raz kolejny przygotowali dla nich dawkę solidnej napierdalanki, na którą składają się 23 kawałki, dające 28 minut muzyki. Nieorientujący się w temacie, powinni wiedzieć, że po tym tercecie nie należy się spodziewać gęstego i mielącego rzygu. Twórczość Szwedów to raczej radosna wersja tego typu grania. Podstawę stanowią thrashowe riffy, mocno przypominające momentami Slayer’a, zwłaszcza w piskliwych zagrywkach czy szalonych solówkach. Brzmienie gitar lekko zalatuje tamtejszym death metalem z lat dziewięćdziesiątych, ale poprzez dodanie akordom charakterystycznej dla core’a skoczności, efekt ten staje się niezauważalny. Dzięki odpowiedniemu dociążeniu tonów wiosła jak i sekcji rytmicznej mamy tutaj do czynienia z takim Lawnmower Deth, tylko na sterydach. Wystarczy spojrzeć na tytuły piosenek, aby złożyć wszystko do kupy. Chłopaki grają energiczny thrash / core, dobrze się przy tym bawiąc. Jest szybko, chwytliwie, ale też bezkompromisowo i zawadiacko. Słuchając ich piosenek można dostać zadyszki, gdyż zapierdalają oni wartko przed siebie, siekąc zwoje mózgowe nieprzerwanie przez pół godziny, nie zwalniając nawet na chwilę. Akordy wirują, basik plumka rozkosznie, a perkusja tłucze przyprawiając o ból głowy. Wokalizami zajmują się wszyscy członkowie Birdflesh, więc otrzymujemy także zróżnicowany atak werbalny, co dodatkowo podkręca całość, nadając jej również nieco punkowego sznytu, bo to przecież w końcu core do chuja. Cóż, w swej niszy mocny to materiał, napisany z pomysłem i odpowiednim zacięciem, który powinien ucieszyć niejednego zwolennika agresywnego, ale również bezpretensjonalnego rzępolenia, pełnego czasami absurdalnego humoru.

Over the years the band released a huge amount of music, consisting in 4 full lenght albums and countless Demos, Splits and EPs, but being so prolific has never been an issue for Birdflesh as their material was, and is, always above the bar.
As they gained the status of “cult band” in the grindcore scene, the live activity took the band on the greatest stages for extreme metal, such as Obscene Extreme Festival, Maryland Deathfest, Neurotic Deathfest and many more. There is nothing in this world like Birdflesh!

W swojej książce „Scented Gardens Of The Mind. Przewodnik po złotej erze rocka progresywnego (1968 – 1980) w ponad 20 krajach Europy” Dag Erik Asbjørnsen pisze ni mniej ni więcej: „Jeśli jedno arcydzieło powinno być wyróżnione jako klejnot włoskiego rocka, mój głos oddałbym na jedyny w swoim rodzaju album zespołu De De Lind…” Cóż, być może nie wszyscy z tą opinią się zgodzą i każdy ma do tego prawo, ale jedno jest pewne – ten wyrafinowany album koncepcyjny o dość prostym temacie głównym to ciało i krew włoskiego progresywnego rocka wczesnych lat 70-tych! Od lat zachodzę w głowę dlaczego, to wcale nie tak małe arcydzieło, wciąż jest mało znane? No bo chyba nie przez tytuł: ” Io non so da dove vengo e non so dove mai andrò, uomo è il nome che mi han dato” („Nie wiem skąd pochodzę, ani nie wiem dokąd zmierzam, człowiek to imię, które mi dali”), powszechnie uważany za najdłuższy jaki wymyślono w muzyce rockowej.

Dziwna nazwa zespołu została zainspirowana amerykańską modelką Diane Lind, zwaną De De Lind, którą wylansował magazyn „Playboy”. Jedyne, co łączy piękną Diane z włoskim zespołem to ponadczasowe piękno i zwodnicza niewinność...

Panna Lind w wieku 19 lat w 1967 roku została „Dziewczyną Miesiąca Sierpnia” otrzymując więcej listów od fanów niż jakakolwiek inna modelka w historii „Playboya”. Mało tego. Jej podobizna była nawet w… kosmosie. Plakat Lindy z listopadowej rozkładówki magazynu z 1969 roku znalazł się na pokładzie statku kosmicznego Apollo 12 przemycony przez naziemną ekipę w teczce z napisem „Mapa Ciała Niebieskiego” (sic!). W 2011 roku astronauta Richard Gordon, dowódca modułu Yankee Clipper, który lądował na Księżycu wystawił go na licytację, gdzie został sprzedany za ponad 21 tysięcy dolarów! Ot, taka ciekawostka, którą można zabłysnąć przy okazji towarzyskiego spotkania. Wracajmy jednak to tematu.

Zespół De De Lind powstał w 1969 roku w Varese, mieście oddalonym od Mediolanu około 50 kilometrów jako grupa beatowa. Na okładce pierwszego singla „Anche se sei qui” z tego samego roku widać, że tworzyło go sześciu muzyków. Rok później byli kwintetem w składzie: Vito Paradiso (wokal, gitara akustyczna), Gilberto Trama (flet, saksofon, instrumenty klawiszowe), Matteo Vitolli (gitara, perkusja, fortepian, flet), Eddy Lorigiola (bas) i Ricky Rbajolie (perkusja).

Słuchając kolejnych dwóch singli: „Mille Anni” (1970) i „Signore, dove va?” (1971) zauważymy, że nie przyniosły one stylistycznych zmian. W 1971 roku brali udział w różnych festiwalach, byli też suportem Uriah Heep w czasie ich tournee po Italii. Muzyczny przełom nastąpił rok później, kiedy zwrócili się w stronę muzyki progresywnej z dodatkiem folku i hard rocka. Zmianę tę słychać na wydanym przez Mercury longplayu „Io non so da dove vengo…” Spór, co do roku jego wydania (wiele internetowych źródeł podaje rok 1973) rozwiewają oryginalne, dziś już nieliczne wydania, na których widnieje data 1972. I tego się trzymajmy.

Nie jestem skory do używania górnolotnych stwierdzeń, ale w tym przypadku muszę stanowczo powiedzieć, że „Io non so da dove vengo…” to arcydzieło włoskiego prog rocka wczesnych lat 70-tych choć niektórym może zająć trochę czasu, aby się o tym przekonać i w pełni go docenić. Biglietto per L’Inferno osiągnęli podobny wyczyn dwa lata później swoim debiutem, ale biorąc pod uwagę ciężki prog moim zdaniem nic (no dobra, może poza Museo Rosenbach i płytą „Zarathustra”) nie zbliżyło się w tym czasie do poziomu De De Lind. Ich muzyka jak na ten czas była absolutnie oryginalna co nie znaczy, że byli samotnym żaglem na włoskiej scenie. Nie mniej talentem i kreatywnością przewyższyli bardziej popularne PFM (patronowane przez ELP), Le Orme czy New Trolls.

Album ma formę requiem (czy też nabożeństwa pogrzebowego) zaprojektowane ściśle według kanonów muzyki klasycznej i wykonywane w Dzień Zaduszny. Chyba nie muszę dodawać, że wykonali go z wielkim zapałem i powagą. W warstwie lirycznej to historia o okropnościach wojny opowiedziana oczami umierającego żołnierza dezertera. Teksty, nawet jeśli wydają się nieco naiwne, idealnie pasują do muzyki potęgując i tak już gęstą atmosferę.

„Fuga e morte” (Ucieczka i śmierć) rozpoczyna coś, co w istocie jest długą suitą podzieloną na siedem mocnych części, choć mogą one też funkcjonować osobno. Podczas szalejącej bitwy nasz bohater desperacko szuka ucieczki przed rzezią. Rytm nabiera szaleństwa, a potężne gitarowe riffy podkreślają niepokój uciekiniera. „Biegałem po niekończących się ścieżkach, nie mogłem się zatrzymać / Tu rządzi Jądro Ciemności / A ja prócz zmartwień nie mam tu nikogo…” Samotny i przerażony czuje, że nikomu nie może ufać. Kiedy promienie słoneczne zaczynają filtrować prastary las i wydaje się, że jest nadzieja, mężczyzna bez twarzy strzela do zbiega. Ołowiane kule przeszywają ciało. Próbuje krzyczeć! Za późno… „Mówiono mi: Strzeż się bliźniego, On może być twoim wrogiem…” W tym momencie gitara akustyczna i flet wprowadzają odrobinę spokoju. Krótka chwila wytchnienia i zaczyna się „Indietro nel tempo”(Powrót w czasie). Wracają wspomnienia, a w raz z nimi dźwięki ognistych gitar… Gdy na zewnątrz zimny wiatr wściekle wieje cała rodzina skupia się wokół kominka. Czerwone od ciepła twarze kontrastują z przesuwającymi się po ścianach cieniami, „W burzliwe noce / Wiatr wył / A dziadek nam opowiadał / Opowieści o zbójcach…” Trzyakordowa progresja ustanowiona w tym nagraniu połączy się znacznie później nadając albumowi jednolitą atmosferę.

Kolejny przełomowy moment pojawia się na początku „Paura del niente” (Lęk przed nicością) . Wokalista Vito Paradiso pogodnie operuje swoim głosem, a gitara akustyczna, pianino i flet zapewniają mu niezbędne wsparcie. Rytm się uspokaja. Życie wciąż się toczy. Przychodzą kolejne obrazy: pamiątki karnawałowej parady i małego chłopca w masce, starca na ławce, który wydaje się być wyrzeźbiony w kamieniu, biały powóz przejeżdżający koło domu bohatera, długie kominy wydzielające czarny dym, samotny pies szukający swego właściciela… Umrzeć w ten sposób wydaje się tak niesprawiedliwe i absurdalne, a pragnienie spotkania ukochanej jest wciąż silne… „Chciałbym spotkać się z tobą / Tuż przed śmiercią słońca/ Może po raz ostatni/ Ale nie tego dnia.” Muzyka, znów oddychając pełnią życia rozpaczliwie pulsuje, płacząc i grzmiąc odbijając się w przód i tył… Przed przejściem w długie crescendo, krótka przerwa daje nam wystarczająco czasu na zastanowienie się, co tu się wydarzyło. Tymczasem igła gramofonu docierając do środka płyty oznajmia, że skończyła się pierwsza jej strona.

Długie, zawieszone jakby we śnie „Smarrimento” (Wierzący) zaczyna się od ostrej, bojowej linii Tull’owego fletu i jest to tak naprawdę jedyna wyprawa na terytorium Iana Andersona. Ta linia szybko staje się cichsza, bardziej refleksyjna. Słychać, że Gilberto Tramie z jego delikatnym vibrato bliżej jest do Petera Gabriela niż do Iana…. Nie trwa to zbyt długo bowiem emanujące akordy gitarowe ostrzegają, że coś się zmienia. Tempo przyspiesza, rośnie napięcie. Elektryczna gitara i flet eksplodują po czym… wszystko cichnie. Wznoszący się i prowokujący do myślenia żałobny, choć przyjemny śpiew Vito rozchodzi się na tle arpeggio akustycznej gitary. Wokalista wciela się w księdza na pogrzebie stojącego między dwoma mężczyznami w czerni. Głos mu drży, a spojrzenie wydaje się zagubione. „Pamiętasz, Don Angelo? / Uczyłeś nas wierzyć w Boga…”. Ten pełen dynamiki i napięcia utwór za każdym razem robi na mnie wielkie wrażenie. „Cimitero di guerra” (Cmentarz wojenny) charakteryzuje się ponurą i eteryczną atmosferą. Uroczyste tempo, gong, perkusja. Bardzo ładne intro. Młoda zakonnica chodzi od drzwi do drzwi obiecując modlitwy w zamian za jałmużnę. Jest czarny habit jest jak cień z zaświatów. I ten tekst… „Cmentarz wojny w słońcu / Białe krzyże przypominają grozę / Gdzie rozpościerały się pola pszenicy / Tyle złamanych istnień leży na próżno / O żołnierzu, nieznany żołnierzu / To zostało pogrzebane na spalonym polu / Dla was, którzy już jesteście w zapomnieniu / Napisali, że jesteście Bogu znani…” Ten hipnotyzujący numer z efektownym wokalem, przytłumionym fletem i akustyczną gitarą nie pozostawia nikogo obojętnym… Nieco radośniej zaczyna być w „Voglia di rivivere” (Chcę znów żyć). Przywiązanie bohatera do życia jest silne, ale… „Mój czas ucieka / Z duchami jakichś szczęśliwych godzin / Mój czas ucieka / Z uśmiechem ludzi, którzy biorą ostatni pociąg…”. Tekst kontrastuje z całkiem przyjemną akustyczną melodią, basowym bębnem, ostrą gitarą prowadzącą i domieszką fajnego saksofonu. Potem następuje krótka repryza instrumentalna z drugiego utworu prowadząca wprost do finału. „E poi” (A potem) to piękny krótki kawałek z konkretnie grającą gitarą elektryczną, a nie brzdąkającym akustykiem i tekstem będący tytułem tego dzieła. Doskonałe zakończenie!

Gdyby przeanalizować liryczną stronę tego albumu powiedziałbym, że tu nie chodzi o śmierć, ani o życie pozagrobowe. To jest album o życiu, którego sam tytuł podsumowuje wszystko, co musimy o nim wiedzieć. „Nie wiem skąd pochodzę, ani nie wiem dokąd zmierzam / Człowiek to imię, które mi dali”.

W swojej książce „Scented Gardens Of The Mind. Przewodnik po złotej erze rocka progresywnego (1968 – 1980) w ponad 20 krajach Europy” Dag Erik Asbjørnsen pisze ni mniej ni więcej: „Jeśli jedno arcydzieło powinno być wyróżnione jako klejnot włoskiego rocka, mój głos oddałbym na jedyny w swoim rodzaju album zespołu De De Lind…” Cóż, być może nie wszyscy z tą opinią się zgodzą i każdy ma do tego prawo, ale jedno jest pewne – ten wyrafinowany album koncepcyjny o dość prostym temacie głównym to ciało i krew włoskiego progresywnego rocka wczesnych lat 70-tych! Od lat zachodzę w głowę dlaczego, to wcale nie tak małe arcydzieło, wciąż jest mało znane? No bo chyba nie przez tytuł: ” Io non so da dove vengo e non so dove mai andrò, uomo è il nome che mi han dato” („Nie wiem skąd pochodzę, ani nie wiem dokąd zmierzam, człowiek to imię, które mi dali”), powszechnie uważany za najdłuższy jaki wymyślono w muzyce rockowej.

Dziwna nazwa zespołu została zainspirowana amerykańską modelką Diane Lind, zwaną De De Lind, którą wylansował magazyn „Playboy”. Jedyne, co łączy piękną Diane z włoskim zespołem to ponadczasowe piękno i zwodnicza niewinność...

Panna Lind w wieku 19 lat w 1967 roku została „Dziewczyną Miesiąca Sierpnia” otrzymując więcej listów od fanów niż jakakolwiek inna modelka w historii „Playboya”. Mało tego. Jej podobizna była nawet w… kosmosie. Plakat Lindy z listopadowej rozkładówki magazynu z 1969 roku znalazł się na pokładzie statku kosmicznego Apollo 12 przemycony przez naziemną ekipę w teczce z napisem „Mapa Ciała Niebieskiego” (sic!). W 2011 roku astronauta Richard Gordon, dowódca modułu Yankee Clipper, który lądował na Księżycu wystawił go na licytację, gdzie został sprzedany za ponad 21 tysięcy dolarów! Ot, taka ciekawostka, którą można zabłysnąć przy okazji towarzyskiego spotkania. Wracajmy jednak to tematu.

Zespół De De Lind powstał w 1969 roku w Varese, mieście oddalonym od Mediolanu około 50 kilometrów jako grupa beatowa. Na okładce pierwszego singla „Anche se sei qui” z tego samego roku widać, że tworzyło go sześciu muzyków. Rok później byli kwintetem w składzie: Vito Paradiso (wokal, gitara akustyczna), Gilberto Trama (flet, saksofon, instrumenty klawiszowe), Matteo Vitolli (gitara, perkusja, fortepian, flet), Eddy Lorigiola (bas) i Ricky Rbajolie (perkusja).

Słuchając kolejnych dwóch singli: „Mille Anni” (1970) i „Signore, dove va?” (1971) zauważymy, że nie przyniosły one stylistycznych zmian. W 1971 roku brali udział w różnych festiwalach, byli też suportem Uriah Heep w czasie ich tournee po Italii. Muzyczny przełom nastąpił rok później, kiedy zwrócili się w stronę muzyki progresywnej z dodatkiem folku i hard rocka. Zmianę tę słychać na wydanym przez Mercury longplayu „Io non so da dove vengo…” Spór, co do roku jego wydania (wiele internetowych źródeł podaje rok 1973) rozwiewają oryginalne, dziś już nieliczne wydania, na których widnieje data 1972. I tego się trzymajmy.

Nie jestem skory do używania górnolotnych stwierdzeń, ale w tym przypadku muszę stanowczo powiedzieć, że „Io non so da dove vengo…” to arcydzieło włoskiego prog rocka wczesnych lat 70-tych choć niektórym może zająć trochę czasu, aby się o tym przekonać i w pełni go docenić. Biglietto per L’Inferno osiągnęli podobny wyczyn dwa lata później swoim debiutem, ale biorąc pod uwagę ciężki prog moim zdaniem nic (no dobra, może poza Museo Rosenbach i płytą „Zarathustra”) nie zbliżyło się w tym czasie do poziomu De De Lind. Ich muzyka jak na ten czas była absolutnie oryginalna co nie znaczy, że byli samotnym żaglem na włoskiej scenie. Nie mniej talentem i kreatywnością przewyższyli bardziej popularne PFM (patronowane przez ELP), Le Orme czy New Trolls.

Album ma formę requiem (czy też nabożeństwa pogrzebowego) zaprojektowane ściśle według kanonów muzyki klasycznej i wykonywane w Dzień Zaduszny. Chyba nie muszę dodawać, że wykonali go z wielkim zapałem i powagą. W warstwie lirycznej to historia o okropnościach wojny opowiedziana oczami umierającego żołnierza dezertera. Teksty, nawet jeśli wydają się nieco naiwne, idealnie pasują do muzyki potęgując i tak już gęstą atmosferę.

„Fuga e morte” (Ucieczka i śmierć) rozpoczyna coś, co w istocie jest długą suitą podzieloną na siedem mocnych części, choć mogą one też funkcjonować osobno. Podczas szalejącej bitwy nasz bohater desperacko szuka ucieczki przed rzezią. Rytm nabiera szaleństwa, a potężne gitarowe riffy podkreślają niepokój uciekiniera. „Biegałem po niekończących się ścieżkach, nie mogłem się zatrzymać / Tu rządzi Jądro Ciemności / A ja prócz zmartwień nie mam tu nikogo…” Samotny i przerażony czuje, że nikomu nie może ufać. Kiedy promienie słoneczne zaczynają filtrować prastary las i wydaje się, że jest nadzieja, mężczyzna bez twarzy strzela do zbiega. Ołowiane kule przeszywają ciało. Próbuje krzyczeć! Za późno… „Mówiono mi: Strzeż się bliźniego, On może być twoim wrogiem…” W tym momencie gitara akustyczna i flet wprowadzają odrobinę spokoju. Krótka chwila wytchnienia i zaczyna się „Indietro nel tempo”(Powrót w czasie). Wracają wspomnienia, a w raz z nimi dźwięki ognistych gitar… Gdy na zewnątrz zimny wiatr wściekle wieje cała rodzina skupia się wokół kominka. Czerwone od ciepła twarze kontrastują z przesuwającymi się po ścianach cieniami, „W burzliwe noce / Wiatr wył / A dziadek nam opowiadał / Opowieści o zbójcach…” Trzyakordowa progresja ustanowiona w tym nagraniu połączy się znacznie później nadając albumowi jednolitą atmosferę.

Kolejny przełomowy moment pojawia się na początku „Paura del niente” (Lęk przed nicością) . Wokalista Vito Paradiso pogodnie operuje swoim głosem, a gitara akustyczna, pianino i flet zapewniają mu niezbędne wsparcie. Rytm się uspokaja. Życie wciąż się toczy. Przychodzą kolejne obrazy: pamiątki karnawałowej parady i małego chłopca w masce, starca na ławce, który wydaje się być wyrzeźbiony w kamieniu, biały powóz przejeżdżający koło domu bohatera, długie kominy wydzielające czarny dym, samotny pies szukający swego właściciela… Umrzeć w ten sposób wydaje się tak niesprawiedliwe i absurdalne, a pragnienie spotkania ukochanej jest wciąż silne… „Chciałbym spotkać się z tobą / Tuż przed śmiercią słońca/ Może po raz ostatni/ Ale nie tego dnia.” Muzyka, znów oddychając pełnią życia rozpaczliwie pulsuje, płacząc i grzmiąc odbijając się w przód i tył… Przed przejściem w długie crescendo, krótka przerwa daje nam wystarczająco czasu na zastanowienie się, co tu się wydarzyło. Tymczasem igła gramofonu docierając do środka płyty oznajmia, że skończyła się pierwsza jej strona.

Długie, zawieszone jakby we śnie „Smarrimento” (Wierzący) zaczyna się od ostrej, bojowej linii Tull’owego fletu i jest to tak naprawdę jedyna wyprawa na terytorium Iana Andersona. Ta linia szybko staje się cichsza, bardziej refleksyjna. Słychać, że Gilberto Tramie z jego delikatnym vibrato bliżej jest do Petera Gabriela niż do Iana…. Nie trwa to zbyt długo bowiem emanujące akordy gitarowe ostrzegają, że coś się zmienia. Tempo przyspiesza, rośnie napięcie. Elektryczna gitara i flet eksplodują po czym… wszystko cichnie. Wznoszący się i prowokujący do myślenia żałobny, choć przyjemny śpiew Vito rozchodzi się na tle arpeggio akustycznej gitary. Wokalista wciela się w księdza na pogrzebie stojącego między dwoma mężczyznami w czerni. Głos mu drży, a spojrzenie wydaje się zagubione. „Pamiętasz, Don Angelo? / Uczyłeś nas wierzyć w Boga…”. Ten pełen dynamiki i napięcia utwór za każdym razem robi na mnie wielkie wrażenie. „Cimitero di guerra” (Cmentarz wojenny) charakteryzuje się ponurą i eteryczną atmosferą. Uroczyste tempo, gong, perkusja. Bardzo ładne intro. Młoda zakonnica chodzi od drzwi do drzwi obiecując modlitwy w zamian za jałmużnę. Jest czarny habit jest jak cień z zaświatów. I ten tekst… „Cmentarz wojny w słońcu / Białe krzyże przypominają grozę / Gdzie rozpościerały się pola pszenicy / Tyle złamanych istnień leży na próżno / O żołnierzu, nieznany żołnierzu / To zostało pogrzebane na spalonym polu / Dla was, którzy już jesteście w zapomnieniu / Napisali, że jesteście Bogu znani…” Ten hipnotyzujący numer z efektownym wokalem, przytłumionym fletem i akustyczną gitarą nie pozostawia nikogo obojętnym… Nieco radośniej zaczyna być w „Voglia di rivivere” (Chcę znów żyć). Przywiązanie bohatera do życia jest silne, ale… „Mój czas ucieka / Z duchami jakichś szczęśliwych godzin / Mój czas ucieka / Z uśmiechem ludzi, którzy biorą ostatni pociąg…”. Tekst kontrastuje z całkiem przyjemną akustyczną melodią, basowym bębnem, ostrą gitarą prowadzącą i domieszką fajnego saksofonu.
