To kolejny zespół w Great Dane Records, który wzbudza we mnie wspomnienia zamierzchłych czasów. Słyszałem Perversity już z początków ich działalności, z jakiegoś demo, którego tytułu teraz nie pamiętam… Zapamiętałem tylko, że w tamtych czasach grali czysty death metal, i to całkiem dobry, pewnie dlatego też nazwa zespołu nigdy nie uciekła mi z pamięci. Wraz z nowym albumem odkrywam, że Perversity nie zmienili swojego podejścia do ekstremalnej muzyki i wciąż grają old schoolowy death metal, taki szczery, surowy, brutalny i bluźnierczy, ale i jeszcze lepszy niz to pamiętam.

Ten album posiada jakby 2 główne oblicza. Pierwsze, to proste death metalowe riffy, sporo szybkich balastów perkusyjnych, i rasowo brzmiące death metalowe wokale czyli standard, ale zbudowany na solidnych death metalowych podwalinach i wpływach. Album mocno przypomina mi Hate z ich death metalowej ery. Druga twarz tej płyty to super brzmiące dysonanse gitarowe w stylu Immolation, co daje gdzie czysty death metal zderza się z nieco udziwniony riffami co daje czasami dość mroczny efekt. Jak napisałem Perversity wsadzam na piłkę wraz z Hate I Immolation, ale myślę że ich muzyka broni się sama swoją pomysłowością, linczujaca umysł brutalnością i szorstkością. Płyta wyprodukowana jest dość surowe, ale podchodzi mi brzmienie tej płyty, bez wątpienia. Oprócz death metalowych masakr i kakofonicznych nawalanek, zespół potrafi zagrać kilka ciężkich jak młot Thora kawałków, które brzmią soczyście i całkiem miażdżąca.

Cieszy mnie że death metal w roku 2024 ciągle brzmi interesująco, co udowodnił na swoim albumie słowacki Perversity.

I heard the music of Perversity in the beginning of their activity, from some demo, the title of which I don't remember now... I only memorized that at the time they played pure death metal, and they have been quite good at that, which is probably why the name of the band has never escaped my memory. With the new album, I discover that Perversity have not changed their approach to extreme music and they still into old school death metal,which sounds honest, raw, brutal and blasphemous, but even better than before.

This album has two main faces. The first one is based on simple death metal riffs, plenty of drum beats, and really great-sounding death metal vocals. Everything is built on solid death metal foundations and influences but the band delivers pretty standard death metal, which is good in their case. The album strongly reminds me of Hate from their death metal era. The second face of this album are superbly interwined guitar dissonances, in the style of Immolation, where pure death metal collides with slightly weird death metal riffs, which brings a quite dark effects at times. As I wrote, I like Perversity along with Hate and Immolation, but I think that their music defends itself with its ingenuity, lynching the mind brutality and roughness of sound. The production of the album is quite raw, but I just like it as it is, without a doubt. In addition to death metal massacres and cacophonous tempos, the band recorded several songs as heavy as Thor's hammer, which sounds really crushing and brutal and it`s very accurate that Perversity also has slower songs in their tracklist.

I'm glad that death metal still sounds interesting in 2024, as the Slovak Perversity proved on this very album.

-The lyrical concept of the album is spiritual negation is a form of negative theology and is as old as philosophy itself. It is a form of theological thinking and religious practise which attempts to approach the negative belief that there is no salvation in the end of the world. That your soul will not be saved by the light of heaven. And everything will be swallowed by the darkness and chaos itself.

- This stunning artwork was created by the very talented Janka Varadyova of "JanaVe Art". The design and layout were made by Hans from "Dis-Art Design".

- The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Martin Barla in his "MF Studios" in Poprad between June and October 2023.

Pełen zaraźliwej energii i porywających rytmów, Focus zapuszcza się jeszcze dalej w eklektyczną i eksperymentalną sferę muzyczną, która kryje w sobie zarówno idyllę, jak i subtelną melancholię.

Aranżacje są niezwykle kreatywne i pomysłowe, ale nie ma w nich nic pretensjonalnego, a cztery kompozycje są niczym ciepły powiew, który jest jednocześnie przyjazny i orzeźwiający.
Ich brzmienie łączy w sobie wiele smaków i wpływów, a rzut oka na trzy znaczące tytuły utworów pozwoli dostrzec, skąd pochodzą niektóre pomysły i impulsy (tj. Camel, Focus i Hendrix).
Chwilami muzyka wydaje się cudownie beztroska, innym razem jesteśmy raczeni intensywnymi i ekstatycznymi fragmentami, które są niczym napędowe i hipnotyzujące, ale jedną rzeczą, która pozostaje niezmienna, jest jej blask i rozmach.

Soft Ffog is a Norwegian progressive jazz-rock band celebrated for its exceptional virtuosity and high musicianship levels. The band combines intricate jazz improvisation with rock elements, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience that showcases precision and creativity.

On their second album Focus, the band is more progrock than ever. The Soft is Ffoggier and the Ffog is softer. Highly influenced by 70s underground heroes like Camel and Focus, sprinkled with that old jazz dust, this new record should satisfy all you 70s nostalgics with a jazz tickle out there!



SOFT FFOG are a four piece from Norway led by guitarist Tom Hasslan. He is the composer of all the music, and some may now him from his main band KROKOFANT. We have Trond Frones on bass from the band GRAND GENERAL. That album they released is a good reference to the music here, with the guitar led jazzy music on display there. We get keyboardist Vegard Lien Bjerkan who also plays with WIZRD. Same with drummer Axel Skalstad but not only with WIZRD he also drums with KROKOFANT.
And sadly I have to say the late Axel Skalstad as he passed away due to an accident a month shy of his 33rd birthday. This just happened on June 9th and the news has sent shock waves through the Norwegien Jazz community in particular, where Axel was a staple playing with pretty much everyone. I'm not sure if this album is the last he recorded but if it is I can't praise him enough for going out like this. I used to think of him as a John Marshall type who was powerful and more rock sounding than jazz.

But Axel's performance here is nothing short of astonishing. His jazz chops were alive and well my friends on this recording. He's very active but so much touch here. It was from the first listen what stood out to me. The album ends with "Oh Jimi" and after we hear the heaviest part of the album after 9 minutes, it settles to just drums only around 10 minutes in, then silence. You couldn't script that any better. Emotion for me, just hearing Axel, then it's over. It's really over.

I feel that this album is better than their debut. It's interesting the song titles like "Camel", "Pocus", "Focus" and "Oh Jimi", because they all relate to those three artists, with Pocus giving us no doubt to who Focus is. My least favourite track is "Focus" but the keyboard led final three minutes are great. The opener Camel contrasts two themes then the electric piano takes the lead after 5 1/2 minutes with some killer drum work. What a combination! And they run this to the end.

"Pocus" is interesting with those punchy and intricate sounds. I like that the bass has the spotlight for a change. The drumming and guitar are outstanding before 5 minutes to almost the end. Insane drum work to end this song. My favourite though is "Oh Jimi" and not just for the way it ends. I really like the keyboard led parts, and again the drumming is all over this. I like how it trips along before 6 minutes. Guitar leads after 8 minutes before it turns heavy and powerful ending with drums and nothing but.

Better than the debut in my opinion, but you have to wonder if this band will continue in light of Axel's passing.

Zapomniany, hard-progresywny, rockowy klasyk z USA! Wydany w 1974 roku w niewielkim nakładzie za pieniądze zespołu album jest znany i ceniony wśród zagorzałych fanów starego rocka, ale warto podkreślić, że jakość muzyki idzie w parze z legendą. Wart w oryginale około 300 euro album wypełniony jest z reguły intensywnym, gitarowo-organowym graniem w stylistyce mniej komercyjnie brzmiących i trochę niedopracowanych (jak to bywa w przypadku tzw. prywatnych tłoczeń) Deep Purple z 1972, chociaż może lepszym odniesieniem byłyby takie zespoły jak Dionysos, Bull Angus czy Felt.

Rozpoczynający całość 8 i pół-minutowy utwór tytułowy wart jest każdych pieniędzy zbieracza płyt z progresywnym rockiem, gdyż nie można się od niego oderwać i myślę, że niejedna rockowa gwiazda dałaby wiele, żeby go skomponować!! Reszta nagrań również 'dowozi' i naprawdę warto zainwestować w ten tytuł! Dodatkowo dołączono cztery fajne nagrania z dwóch singli z lat 1974-1975.

To jest jedyny zachowany, pełny występ zespołu z pierwszej koncertowej trasy z I.G. i R.G. z 1969 roku oraz jedyny ocalały zapis koncertowej wersji "Kentucky Woman" z Gillanem na wokalu! Poza tym pod koniec 1969 roku zespół grał nieco bardziej progresywnie niż rok później! Jakość dźwięku jest praktycznie doskonała! Meshuggah długo przebijali się do świadomości szerszego grona słuchaczy. Na dobre zaistnieli w niej wydając "Nothing". W ten sposób określili swoją muzyczną tożsamość i zainspirowali szereg mniej lub bardziej udanych epigonów, którzy zaczęli używać świeżo ukutego terminu "djent" dla zdefiniowania swojego stylu.

Twórczość Szwedów od początku była nietuzinkowa, jednak doceniona została dopiero wraz z premierą wspomnianego tytułu. Wtedy stali się przedmiotem zainteresowań kolegów po fachu i wykładowców na muzycznych uniwersytetach. Wzrosła również liczba wyznawców wśród fanów. Każdy z fascynacją zagłębiał się w świat metrycznych dysonansów kreowany przez ekipę z Umea. Jak wspomniałem, jak grzyby po deszczu zaczęli wyrastać naśladowcy, którzy zapożyczali różne elementy z muzyki Meshuggah. Niestety większość brzmiała jak wykastrowana wersja swego wzorca.

Cechy charakterystyczne dla twórczości Szwedów? Specyficzny psychodeliczny klimat, polirytmiczne zabawy, ciężar gitar i rozwrzeszczany wokal Kidmana. Inne zespoły mogą się z nimi ścigać i grać nawet na piętnastostrunowych gitarach, jednak i tak nie zabrzmią tak ciężko jak Meshuggah, gdyż jego ciężar muzyki wynika bezpośrednio z samych kompozycji. Nie wystarczy odpowiednio nastroić gitary i bezmyślnie trącać struny. Wciąż tak wiele zespołów tego nie rozumie.

Ostatni krążek "Koloss" stanowił syntezę brzmienia zespołu oraz podsumowanie pewnego etapu. Ekstrakt z poprzednich wydawnictw. Ciekawe dokąd zabiorą nas następnym razem? Zespół, który stworzył, jeśli nie nowy gatunek muzyczny, to przynajmniej odrębny gatunek metalu świętuje w tym roku dwadzieścia pięć lat działalności. Z tej okazji zostało przygotowane DVD, wzbogacone o dwupłytowy materiał audio będący lustrzanym odbiciem zawartości krążka DVD. Różnica głównie polega na tym, że kawałki na audio zebrano z różnych części trasy, natomiast zdjęcia do DVD kręcono w dwóch miejscach, ale o tym później. "The Ophidian Trek" to rzecz skierowana raczej wyłącznie do fanów, zwłaszcza, że po "Obzen" ukazało się świetne "Alive", na którym można było zobaczyć, co oznacza Meshuggah live. "The Ophidian Trek" nie oferuje niczego nowego w tym zakresie, poza kompozycjami z "Koloss" i Kidmanem w koszulce "The Dude" z "Big Lebowskiego".

Czasy, kiedy fani dostawali w ręce wydawnictwa w rodzaju "Wake up and smell...Carcass" czy "Monkey Puss" Entombed, czyli dość wiernie oddające klimat występu live, odeszły do lamusa. Nie inaczej jest z najnowszym tytułem Meshuggah. Miałem przyjemność oglądać ten zespół dwa razy, raz w klubie, raz na festiwalu. Żadne DVD nie odda tego, jak człowiek czuje się w konfrontacji z tą muzyką na żywo. W moim przypadku uruchamia jedynie wspomnienia, mam się do czego odnieść. Pozostali otrzymują namiastkę, mogą obejrzeć reakcję publiki, zobaczyć jak zespół się zachowuje na scenie ale sama esencja pozostanie poza zasięgiem. Trochę jak lizanie loda przez szybkę.

Ale do rzeczy. "The Ophidian Trek" ogląda się bardzo przyjemnie. Wspomniałem, że kręcony był na dwóch arenach. Pierwsza, niezidentyfikowana (nigdzie nie znalazłem wzmianki, poza tym, że gdzieś w USA) pokazuje zespół w warunkach klubowych. Sama miejscówka przypomina wnętrze teatru. Druga lokalizacja to festiwal Wacken Open Air i tam rządzą kamery ZDF Kultur. Tu otrzymujemy typowe ujęcia festiwalowe, ruchome kamery itd. Standard. Ciekawsze są ujęcia z drugiej lokalizacji. Reżyser Anthony Dubois rozmieścił kamery w wielu różnych miejscach, dzięki czemu w jakimś stopniu można poczuć, że jest się na koncercie Meshuggah. Wszystko za sprawą ujęć z poziomu widowni. Jeden z kamerzystów kręci z samego młyna, więc jesteśmy tuż obok, pomiędzy szalejącymi fanami. Mamy ujęcia z widowni, z balkonu, tuz przed samą sceną. Na szczęście są też ujęcia ze sceny. Na szczęście przynajmniej dla mnie, bo mógłbym oglądać tzw. drum cam z całego ich występu.

Jeśli ktoś choć raz zaliczył udział w metalowym festiwalu, widząc zdjęcia z Wacken, z łatwością może przenieść się na miejsce. Letnie powietrze, pierwszy wieczorny chłód, niebo pełne gwiazd i hałas płynący ze sceny. I patrząc po ludziach ten sam trans w jaki wpędza człowieka Meshuggah na żywo. Wszyscy jak zahipnotyzowani kiwają się w przód i w tył. DVD jest tak skonstruowane, że bez przerw przenosi się z jednej lokalizacji do drugiej. Ujęcia sklejono w taki sposób, że gdy kończy się jeden kawałek, od razu zaczyna się drugi a widz dopiero po chwili orientuje się, że to już inne miejsce. Dźwięk oczywiście został poddany obróbce studyjnej, szumy zredukowane, widownię słychać jedynie na początku i na koniec każdego utworu. A te reprezentowały przede wszystkim ostatni krążek i były przeplatane numerami z wcześniejszych materiałów aż do "Chaosphere" ("New Millenium Cyanide Christ", jakżeby inaczej). Mamy wszystkie hity, "Rational Gaze", "Bleed", "Combustion", "Demiurge" (ten groove, obezwładniający), "Dancers To A Discordant System" czy pędzący na złamanie karku "The Hurt That Finds You First". Dziewięćdziesiąt minut szaleństwa.

Jak wspomniałem, to rzecz głównie dla fanów, jeśli ktoś nie miał wcześniej styczności z Meshuggah lepiej niech zacznie od płyt studyjnych. Ci pierwsi będą zadowoleni, bo kontaktu z ich ulubieńcami w każdej formie nigdy dość. Zdaję sobie sprawę, że częściej będę wracał do "Alive', zwłaszcza do fragmentów z Japonii (świetny klimat i praca kamer). "The Ophidian Trek" przyciąga głównie przez fakt, że stanowi dopełnienie ostatniego studyjnego krążka, zawierając pochodzące z niego numery. Szkoda też, że nie ma żadnych dodatków. Może na trzydziestolecie działalności Szwedzi przygotują coś specjalnego. A tak, mamy standardowe DVD od wyjątkowego zespołu.
