...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Drummer, composer, lyricist, improviser, cultural theorist and the individual largely responsible for the existence of ReR/Recommended records, Chris Cutler (like his longtime musical sparring partner Fred Frith) has cast a long shadow over avant rock for over 30 years. He first came to prominence when he joined Henry Cow in 1971, but he had been active on London's psychedelic/underground scene since the mid 60s, and in the early 70s formed the Ottawa Music Company (a large collective of rock composers) with sometime Egg/Hatfields keyboards player Dave Stewart. When Henry Cow ceased working in 1978, he was instrumental in setting up Recommended Records along with Nick Hobbs, Henry Cow's ex-manager, initially as a distribution service and subsequently as a label in its own right. He also formed the excellent Art Bears with Fred Frith and Dagmar Krause, in which he was lyricist as well as the drummer. Since then he has been involved in a bewildering number of projects, often simultaneously, including The Residents, Pere Ubu, News From Babel, Cassiber, Aqsak Maboul, The EC Nudes and P53. He has also worked as an improviser, notably with Fred Frith (see seperate entry), Thomas DiMuzio and Zeena Parkins. Further to all this, he has also developed a unique electric drum kit - to quote from the man himself: "There are no samples, pads or triggers, just acoustic drums amplified and modified with standard electronic processors ... All this is run into a small 16 channel mixer and out through various standard pedals and guitar effects" (from the sleevenotes to Solo). More details can be found on his website. At various points in its evolution, this kit can be heard on all his post Henry Cow recordings. To date there have been only 2 Cutler solo releases; Solo is live improvisations on the electric drumkit, while Twice Around The World is an album of soundscapes created for London based Resonance FM and described as 'an experiment in listening'. The discography also includes 2 albums recorded with electronics performer Thomas DiMuzio (who has also worked with 5UUs) and one with Zeena Parkins (News From Babel, Skeleton Crew). A masterful and highly original drummer, he is well worth catching live where his unique style can be seen as well as heard. All of his albums can be recommended, but his collaborations with Thomas DiMuzio are perhaps the best place to start, in particular the masterful Dust. See also Cutler/Frith. A seminal figure in the RIO scene, Cutler's solo and collaborative works are an essential addition to the RIO/Avant prog category. 10 CDs, 1 DVD, 80pp booklet and box. To make public a mass of unreleased material I decided to wrap this musical collection into a box. These 10 CDs (and a DVD) include over five hours of unreleased materials, my three previously released solo CDs (‘solo’, ‘twice around the earth’ and ‘there and back again’); plus a double CD collection of tracks spanning 50 years of official recordings (It Makes Sense to Me), as well as the 22-hour radio programme I made for Radio Art Zone last year (that’s on the DVD). 36 hours. Comes with 2 fat books of documentation, artwork, photographs, published and unpublished texts. for the avoidance of all confusion: of the 5 CDs of 'unreleased materials', 100 copies of 4 of them were privately printed for japan (as CC100, 200, 300 & 400), so a few of you may have them. CC500, the two books and the DVD appear for the first time. The subscription edition is numbered and signed and comes with an extra CD not otherwise available. ..::TRACK-LIST::.. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. I listen to a lot of technical death metal; it's my favorite type of death metal, and admittedly, I'm not too picky with it either. I understand the complaints of it being more of just a showboating competition rather than an actual song, but throw in a lot of notes, a clean production and some pompous lyrics screamed by what sounds like a maniac, and I'm all for it. Despite this, I knew when I had first heard this EP, this was truly something special. Firstly, I'm not one to talk much about production, but the sound on this is absolutely spot on. Everything is audible and clean, but not too clean to where it sounds plasticy. The guitars have a nice crunch to them, the bass is devastatingly low and rumbles away like an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. The drums and vocals are balanced nicely as well, and everything comes together very well, with not one party outdoing the other at any point. Musically, it's a tech death album by the numbers; changing tempos, switching time signatures, blistering speed and a drummer that pummels away at his kit like it's a contest to see how fast he can go. What makes this album special for me are the absolutely obliterating grooves that they hit you with. Sure, all the tech is fun and cool, but if you can't kick me in the balls with a monstrous riff that has me headbanging until my vertebrae disintegrate, it tends to lose the "death metal" part of it. Thankfully, Wounds understands this. Every song on this EP has that one crushing riff that becomes a "try not to headbang" challenge. And for me, I've failed every single time I've listened to this EP. And, thankfully again, they're not slam breakdowns. These are genuine, meaty riffs that will knock your socks off and get your whole body moving. The solos are really nice too, very melodic and memorable. The gorgeous solo at the end of "Metamorphosis" is the best on the album for sure. The bass player is a beast as well. I commented on how nice the bass sounds in the mix, and his playing style mixes nicely fits the music. He mostly just follows the guitar players, but I can't say in this case I really care, because he adds that extra layer of punch to the riffs. And wow, do I need another paragraph dedicated to this vocalist. The absolute cream of the crop is this mad lad. His lows are pretty intelligible, there's some "BREE" parts in his lows for an added touch. But, my God, this guys highs! It sounds like someone stuck him in an isolation room, tied him up and set him on fire and recorded his screams of anguish for the record. They're insane! I always love me some highs in a death metal vocalist, and you really won't find much better than this guy. There's really nothing I can complain about with this EP. It's been a constant of mine ever since it dropped last year, and it has yet to lose its initial touch for me. Every time I throw it on, its a pure rush of adrenaline that makes me want to get in my car and just rip it down the highway and start a high speed police chase with this blasting from my speakers. I've not come across anything this explosive and impressive in a long time, and to think that this is a debut has me super excited for this band's future. I'd recommend this to not only tech death fans, but I'd urge fans of regular death metal to give this one a try too. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. It could be a bit overwhelming at first, but the hooks will grab you in very quickly. Very enjoyable from start to finish. chrisc7249 ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. Explosion of Interstellar Terror 04:15 2. ..::OPIS::.. 'The Complete Rockpalast Collection' to niezbędna wizualna pamiątka po powszechnie szanowanym, kochanym i 'bardzo nieobecnym' gitarzyście... Rory's Rockpalast The enduring friendship between Rory and the good people of WDR's Rockpalast is finally all contained in one box. the Rockpalast stages (be they indoor or outdoor) always provided a great platform for Rory and his band to perform on, always delivering the goods. The ambience backstage at Rockpalast nights also brought out the camaraderie in the musicians appearing on the shows. This would inevitably lead to a unique 'jam session' and thankfully some of these have been captured for posterity. Donal Gallagher 2005 ..::TRACK-LIST::.. DVD 1: WDR STUDIO L COLOGNE 1976 1. ..::OPIS::.. Reedycja jednej z najważniejszych płyt w dyskografii Mike’a Oldfielda. ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 5.1 Surround Sound Mixes: 1. ABSOLUTNA PETARDA!!! ..::OPIS::.. What’s the nerdiest influence on a metal band you’ve ever heard of? I always thought that Slough Feg had got the winner there, what with their album based on the classic pen and paper RPG, “Traveller”. Achelous have ripped the throne from their trad-metal hands with this album, based on the Icewind Dale trilogy by R.A.Salvatore, a (fantastic) set of fantasy novels based on the pen and paper RPG Dungeons and Dragons. Achelous are a Greek band, having released one previous album and a couple of Eps before. I have to say, upon listening to record opener “Northern Winds” (which is not actually a song about waking up the morning after a curry in Bradford), I was really pleased and surprised with what I had heard. I was expecting some more like the power metal that tends to be en vogue when fantasy metal is produced, but actually what I heard was much more like the slightly doomy traditional metal like that heard from classic act Doomsword. Chris Kappas (vocals) has a fine clean singing voice, which has plenty of power and clean diction. While he may sound a little more Blaze Bailey than Bruce Dickinson, there’s a fair amount of range in his voice. Second song on the album, “Flames of War” has an infectious gallop to it, with some nifty axe duelling, while the powerful production and aggressive approach of the band perhaps make this a little closer to the more muscular moments of Iced Earth than to many power metal bands. “Savage King” is a jaunty stomper, with some effective chugging moments. For me though, highlight of the album is the almost absurdly enjoyable sonic adventure that is “Halfling’s Gem”. Is it cheesy? Yeah, it is. Is it great? Yeah, it is. You must make a saving throw against Axe, Bass and Drum on D20 or else this track is going to bury itself deep into your skull. I can imagine this being played with lots of dry ice and one-foot-on-the-monitor gurning bass work. In terms of criticisms, I don’t have that many. I’d like the synth to be a little lower in the mix from time to time but overall the production is mostly spot on. At just eight tracks long, it doesn’t outweigh its welcome either. The final track “Outcast” is the longest, weighing over 7 minutes in length, but even then it feels epic rather than merely long. If you fancy a tasty melding of orcs, elves, halflings and pure nerd metal, then this is one for your collection. Chris Davison ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. Northern Winds 06:06 2. Flames Of War 04:07 3. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. ..::TRACK-LIST::.. Ommadawn (2010 5.1 Surround Mixes) Mixed By Mike Oldfield 1. Part One 19:06 2. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Słuchając Hergest Ridge {Part One and Two} 2010 Stereo Mixes, rejestrując uszami zmiany detali, przypomniałem sobie narzekania krytyków z końca lat 70., którzy przed laty deprecjonowali wartość "Wrzosowisk". Na Deluxe Edition w wersji audio podarowano słuchaczom aż trzy wersje Stereo Mixes 2010, Original 1974 Stereo Mixes, i Previously Unreleased 1974 Demo Recordings. To całkiem dobry wynik. Electronic music ..::OBSADA::.. 1. Hergest Ridge [Part 01] 2010 5.1 Surround Mix 2. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Dlaczego? Dzisiaj... Człowiek się jednak starzeje... Although the reason why I decided to revisit Iron Angel’s back catalogue some ten years ago was the release of the awful “Back from Hell” demo, about which the guys should forget faster than Destruction did about their mid-90’s period (yeah, it’s that bad), I was quite glad that I did since it reminded me of how jubilant I was listening to this happy-go-lucky speed metal barrage on the album reviewed here in my teenage years, feeling also content with the fact that I had found “Walls of Jericho”’s little brother, only served with a more mainstream flavour. Although the guys were the first German victims of the mid-80’s transformation campaign (Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc.) towards a mellower poppier sound, they still managed to retain quite a bit of their aggressive swagger that made their debut such a compulsive headbanging fest. The debut was a compelling speed/thrash affair with audible attempts at more individual ways of expression. However, the sophomore here shows an obvious fascination with the mentioned Helloween magnum opus, and it remains its most faithful companion all these years including with the more commercial radio-friendly additives, and not only because of Dick Shroder’s “Kai Hansen meets Udo”-like vocals. The stomping officiant intro that is the title-track abruptly turns into a ball of speed metal fury on “Metalstorm” which couldn’t have been titled more appropriately, a short bursting speedster that almost exemplifies the German speed metal scene in its entirety. “Son of a Bitch” is not an Accept cover, contrary to the expectations, but is a great uplifting power metal anthem with a nearly stadium-filling potential with the rousing shouty chorus and the brisk bouncy rhythms. “Vicious” has a smattering pounding beginning, but after it it’s business as usual the band unleashing a whirlwind of fast lashing guitars turning this number into another shining example of pure speed metal carnage done right. “Born to Rock” has a very clear message from the very title, and this is indeed a fist-pumping heavy rocker worthy of Accept and Scorpions with a staged live setting echoing Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”. Far from embarrassment, this number remains the only full-fledged probe into the growing pop-metalish aesthetics on the field, and is totally cancelled by “Fight for Your Life”, a vigorous speed/thrash with biting cutting guitars, arguably the band’s finest achievement, offering myriad time and tempo-changes, a shredding fest of epic proportions nearly matched by “Stronger than Steel” which stomping intro reminds of Exciter’s “Scream in the Night” from “Violence & Force”; furious speed metal is thrown at the expectant audience later, a soaring “eagle fly free” cavalcade with the next in line sing-along chorus embedded into the hyper-active melee. “Sea of Flames” serves a tasteful portion of melodic leads as an appetizer which precedes another fast-paced carnival mixed with more laid-back power metal, the melodic hooks appearing later again to wrap it on. “Creatures of Destruction” is a brilliant angry speed metaller the guys raising hell as a logical conclusion to this impressive slab of old school metal which actual finale is the cool short balladic “Back to the Silence” with Schroder showing his more lyrical, more passionate vocal arsenal to a really positive effect. German speed metal couldn’t have come much better than here, and apart from the early Helloween exploits and Living Death’s “Metal Revolution” it’s probably only the first two Scanner instalments that managed to capture the movement’s invigorating charm as profoundly, not siding that readily with the more aggressive thrash-prone debuts of Angel Dust, Exumer and Paradox, and Blind Guardian’s first two. The mentioned friendlier ingredients boded danger for eventual future recordings as one never knew how far the guys would be willing to reach exploring their more tender side. In this train of thought their very early disappearance, one of the earliest in metal history as a matter of fact, may have been for the better cause no one wanted to see prime German speed metallers releasing “Cold Lake” or “Eat the Heat” before those albums were even conceived on the mental plane. The old school resurrection wave brought the Iron Angels back into the game, and although the first showing (the mentioned demo) after the reformation had better be forgotten, the more recent weather forecasts hint at potential strong winds (of war) stirring somewhere in the distance. ..::OPIS::.. The Swedes have never been strangers to heavy metal. And even though many of their heavy metal releases from the eighties ended up buried in obscurity, anybody who has taken any time at all to plough through a cursory sampling of albums from that scene will tell you how exceptional it truly was. Pound-for-pound, Sweden could arguably be the most consistent exporter of quality heavy metal in the world. So it should come as no surprise to see that Lethal Steel is continuing the tradition with their latest release, a feisty four-track EP that encapsulates what so many of us love about Swedish heavy metal. Running from the Dawn is a natural follow up from their last release. At its most basic level, it's just a continuation the paths opened up in Legion of the Night, albeit with a bit more speed and some interesting change-ups along the way. Taken as a whole, this EP plays like a miniature tribute to Iron Maiden. The first track opens up with a slow acoustic intro that ultimately breaks out into the fast galloping riffs that characterise the remainder of the album. The bass playing is inventive and flashy, and the guitar solos are melodic and captivating. But that isn't all. "Weekday Refugee" builds suspense throughout the song only to deliver a couple absolutely splendid tempo changes that are strongly reminiscent of Iron Maiden's Seventh Son. And though the vocalist doesn't really sound much like the epic Dickinson, his delivery is still charged with all the oomph and grandiose vibrato you need. I've never been a rabid collector of EPs as I generally prefer the listening time of a full-length album, but I'll always take an EP with no filler over a half-baked LP. And Lethal Steel have delivered exactly that with this release: four well-balanced songs with a few obvious hat-tips to one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. It may not be the best EP you've ever heard, but it's good enough to warrant a listen from any true heavy metal fan. raoulduke25 ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. Weekday Refugee 4:50 2. Stay Away 5:38 3.
