Długo oczekiwany piąty album fińskich przedstawicieli nihilistycznego, okultystycznego i unikalnego death metalu! W składzie byli i obecni muzycy LIE IN RUINS, PERDITION WINDS, SARGEIST, CRYPTBORN, URN, CONVOCATION...



Patrząc na dotychczasową aktywność Desolate Shrine, trudno uwierzyć, że po „Deliverance From The Godless Void” zespół zrobił sobie aż pięcioletnią przerwę. W tym przydługim międzyczasie wszechstronny LL rozkręcił Convocation, a i wokaliści na brak zajęć nie narzekali, więc mogły się pojawić wątpliwości, czy przypadkiem Finowie nie znudzili się wypracowaną przez lata formułą i nie chcą od niej odpocząć albo co gorsza – dać sobie z nią siana. Fires Of The Dying World przynosi jednoznaczne odpowiedzi na te pytania, albowiem na pewno nie jest dokładnie tym, do czego nas (mnie!) przyzwyczaili.

Muzycy Desolate Shrine musieli dojść do wniosku, że już najwyższy czas na zmiany, że trzeba inaczej podejść do tematu i wpuścić do stylu trochę nowych/odświeżających elementów – niezależnie od rezultatu przynajmniej nikt im nie zarzuci, że są wtórni, przewidywalni i nagrywają w kółko tę samą płytę. Stąd też początek Fires Of The Dying World był dla mnie dość zaskakujący – zamiast typowego dla nich wybuchu agresji i ostrej jazdy do przodu dostałem akustyczne i niezapadające w pamięć intro w typie lat 90. ubiegłego wieku. Kolejny, już normalny, utwór również nie podniósł mi ciśnienia, bo mimo iż solidny, to więcej w nim szwedzkiego death metalu (nowej daty) niż Desolate Shrine. Zespół rozkręca się dopiero w kawałku tytułowym, który jako pierwszy spełnia moje oczekiwania – jest szybko, gęsto i brutalnie, z porządnymi wyziewnymi wokalami (zwłaszcza w duetach) i zawiesistym klimatem. Podobnie dobre wrażenie robi jeszcze tylko „Cast To Walk The Star Of Sorrow”, natomiast pozostałe numery wywołują u mnie mieszane odczucia, choć z przewagą tych pozytywnych – dlatego ocena jest mimo wszystko wysoka.

Bez dwóch zdań Fires Of The Dying World jest materiałem bardziej różnorodnym niż to drzewiej bywało, mocniej skontrastowanym, z dobrze zbalansowanymi wpływami doomu i blacku. Niestety nie wszystkie zmiany wyszły Desolate Shrine na zdrowie. O ile z wpływami wspomnianego już szwedzkiego death metalu (pierwsze skojarzenie to Bloodbath) i większą, bezpośrednią melodyjnością nie mam problemu, tak liczne wstawki z gitarą akustyczną nieco mnie irytują. Te spokojne partie przypuszczalnie miały budować napięcie, jednak coś nie pykło i efekt jest taki, że zaburzają płynność i spójność muzyki. Okazuje się, że w przypadku tego zespołu lepiej sprawdzają się klawisze, które niepokojąco snują się w tle, jak choćby w „Cast To Walk The Star Of Sorrow”.

Ponadto wydaje mi się, że całość jest wyraźnie prostsza w odbiorze od poprzednich krążków. Na pewno wpływ na to ma przejrzysta produkcja; album brzmi ciężko, ciężej niż kiedykolwiek, ale też bardzo czytelnie. Każdy detal jest na wyciągnięcie ręki. Przystępności służy również rozrzedzona atmosfera muzyki – Fires Of The Dying World nie jest ani duszna, ani przytłaczająca. Klimatu ma na tyle, żeby zachęcić do słuchania, a nie powodować trwałe zmiany w mózgu. Także długość płyty (47 minut w odróżnieniu od godzinnych poprzedniczek) sprawia, że łatwiej ją przetrawić. No i w końcu – osłuchanie zespołu też robi swoje, bo pomimo kilku istotnych zmian w stylu, Finowie grają dość charakterystycznie.

Chociaż nie jestem rozczarowany zawartością Fires Of The Dying World, to po Desolate Shrine spodziewałem się hmm… czegoś więcej albo czegoś trochę innego. Jeśli w przeciwieństwie do mnie cechujecie się większą tolerancją na akustyczne wstawki, to spokojnie możecie dopisać jeszcze pół punktu.
