W kwietniu 1984 roku, po ośmiu latach od rozwiązania zespołu, Deep Purple powrócił na scenę w klasycznym składzie: Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord i Ian Paice, w którym nie występował od 1973 roku. Zespół zarejestrował nowy studyjny album "Perfect Strangers" i wyruszył w trasę koncertową.

Koncert z Melbourne, jedyny zarejestrowały w całości występ z tego tour.




Częstotliwość z jaką ukazują się koncertowe DVD DP, szczególnie te ze starszym materiałem, sprawia, że na niektóre tytuły trzeba czekać latami.

„Perfect Strangers Live”, australijski koncert zarejestrowany 12 grudnia 1984 roku jest tego koronnym przykładem. Był to koncertowy „Święty Graal” – jeden z paru zagranych na Antypodach podczas „Perfect Strangers World Tour” – wydany na bootlegach w różnych wersjach. Jego zapis wizualny obrósł legendą, jednak jak to z yeti bywa, nikt tego nie widział, ani nie miał w jakości takiej jak ta obecna.

Jednak od początku. W 1984 roku DP w kanonicznym składzie wydało „Perfect Strangers”, najlepszą płytę po reaktywacji i jedną z czołowych w karierze. Grupa odbyła światową, bardzo dobrze przyjętą trasę koncertową. Jej owocem był świetny wykonawczo, ale lichy brzmieniowo podwójny album koncertowy „In The Absence Of Pink – Knebworth 1985”.

W 1987 zespół nagrał heavy-metalową „The House Of Blue Light” i odbył kolejną trasę. Pamiątką z niej był koszmarny album koncertowy o dobitnym tytule „Nobody’s Perfect”. To był koniec DP z Gillanen, gdyż po kłótni zespół opuścił wokalista, a na jego miejsce przybył Joe Lynn Turner znany m.in. z Rainbow. Jednak to już zupełnie inna historia.

Trzeba przyznać, że Deep Purple ma w swoim dorobku płyt koncertowych więcej niż studyjnych, a prawie każda trasa została uwieczniona nie raz, ale parę razy. Piszę to nie bez znaczenia, gdyż do czasu premiery „Perfect Strangers Live” nie było w dyskografii i videografii DP albumu koncertowego z prawdziwego zdarzenia dokumentującego tę legendarną trasę w tak wzorowej jakości audiowizualnej !!! Wreszcie bardzo popularne, pirackie DVD z zapisem koncertu paryskiego z 9 lipca 1985 z Palais Omnisports nakręcone przez telewizję i rażące jakością VHS, będzie można odstawić do lamusa. Wreszcie też „czarna dziura” w dyskografii koncertówek DP dokumentujących tamten okres została załatana.

Koncert spełnionych marzeń

„Perfect Strangers Live” to zapis australijskiego koncertu będącego popisem samym w sobie. Zespół był wówczas na samym początku trasy, którą rozpoczął w Nowej Zelandii. Świeżo po wydaniu płyty muzycy jeszcze nie mogli się sobą (po ludzku) i swoją muzyką nacieszyć do końca. Dopiero co zeszli się po ośmiu latach przerwy i po nagraniu swojej jednej z najlepszych płyt przeżywali drugą młodość.

To wszystko słychać i widać na „Perfect Strangers Live” bardzo dobitnie. Zespół jest w szczytowej formie. Pomiędzy Gillanem i Blackmorem iskrzy jak za najlepszych lat albo lepiej i nic nie wróży mającego nastąpić za parę lat poważnego rozłamu na linii wokalista-gitarzysta.

Jak przed laty i jak przez wiele lat później, zespół rozpoczyna koncert od agresywnie zagranej „Highway Star”. Jako drugi słyszymy „Nobody’s Home” i od razu wiadomo, że koncert będzie udany.

Mimo że Gillan ma przez cały koncert chrypkę, to znakomicie zwalcza tę niedyspozycję gardła. Jego wokalne dialogi z gitarą Blackmore’a podczas środkowej części „Strange Kind Of Woman” z cytatem z „Jesus Christ Superstar” porażają.

Zespół gra tego wieczora aż pięć kompozycji z „Perfect Strangers”. Trzeba przyznać, że to jedyna taka okazja żeby usłyszeć je na żywo. Do stałego koncertowego setu na stałe weszły tylko dwa. Poza tym, DP jeszcze był nowym repertuarem zafascynowany i dopiero go ogrywał. Dlatego też koncertowe wersje “Nobody’s Home, „A Gypsy’s Kiss”, “Perfect Strangers”, „Under The Gun” i “Knocking At Your Back Door” są pełne napięcia, radości z grania i świeżości. Mimo że scena wizualnie nie prezentuje się oszałamiająco, światła są skromne w porównaniu z dzisiejszymi koncertami, podczas „Perfect Strangers” nie ma laserów, a całość jest sfilmowana bardzo tradycyjnie, to koncert ogląda się z niesłabnącym zainteresowaniem. Dla zagorzałego fana DP to rzecz nie do przecenienia.

Każdy z muzyków ma tu swoje pięć minut. Pełne eksperymentalnych, analogowych brzmień solówki Lorda na klawiszach Hammonda (”Jon Lord Keyboard Solo”) czy popisy Blackmore’a w „Difficult To Cure” są świadectwem, że mamy do czynienia z wykonaniem najwyższej jakości. Cały zespół bez nuty fałszu tamtego grudniowego wieczora daje z siebie to, co najlepsze.

Blackmore miał wówczas świetne samopoczucie co przełożyło się na grę. W finale „Under the Gun” krzesa ze swojego Stratocastera ile się da. Relacje pomiędzy zespołem, a publicznością są wyjątkowo żywe, nie to co dzisiaj.

Bluesowe sola Blackmore’a podczas „Lazy” brzmią świeżo, bez cienia rutyny i chłodu, co na „Nobody’s Perfect”. Mimo że tamtego wieczora Gillan miał chrypkę, nie przeszkadzało mu to zaśpiewać na wysokich rejestrach „Child In Time”. Gdy zespół gra wydłużoną wersję „Space Truckin ‘”, rozgrzany Blackmore katuje swego Stratocastera w typowy dla siebie sposób.

Zagrane na bis reprezentatywne wersje „Black Night”, „Speed King” i „Smoke On The Water” z rozbudowaną środkową częścią z publicznością śpiewającą refren z Gillanem, wieńczą ten modelowy koncert kanonicznego składu Deep Purple z jego drugiego „złotego okresu”.

Z ręką na sercu trzeba przyznać, że „Perfect Strangers Live” to wyśmienita pamiątka z australijskich koncertów DP i w ogóle perfekcyjne DVD z zapisem występu DP w szczytowej formie.

ASPEKTY TECHNICZNE
Obraz w formacie telewizyjnym całkiem nieźle zniósł upływ czasu. Kolory są dobrze nasycone. Zdarzają się co prawda utraty ostrości, ale chwilowe. Jedyne co doskwiera, to słaba widoczność detali w cieniach. Gdy scenę spowija mrok, nie widać nic, gdy oświetlają ją reflektory obraz nabiera kolorów i detali. Pamiętajmy jednak, że trzy dekady temu sprzęt rejestrujący obraz nie był taki jak obecnie.

Ścieżka dźwiękowa w nieskompresowanym DTS 5.1 o bitrate 1536 kbps ma charakter zdecydowanie stereofoniczny. Jednak głosy instrumentów są wyraźne i mają typowo koncertowy charakter, momentami dość zadziorny. Jak na zapis na setkę, mamy do czynienia z zawodowstwem.

BONUSY
Pod nazwą „Tour Documentary” znajduje się dwudziesto dwu minutowy materiał zawierający fragmenty z konferencji prasowej przed australijską trasą koncertową oraz fragmenty wywiadów dla różnych stacji telewizyjnych przeprowadzonych na przełomie 1984-1985 roku. Zaledwie kilka dni temu, omawiając najnowszą płytę Moon Safari, sam sobie zadałem retoryczne pytanie: jak to się dzieje, że najwspanialsze płyty 2023 roku ukazują się właśnie w grudniu – Peter Gabriel, Trevor Horn, Giant Sky, Porcupine Tree, Moon Safari właśnie i teraz do tego grona dołożyć trzeba najnowsze dzieło grupy Pallas pt. „The Messenger”. Trafiło ono na półki sklepowe 15 grudnia, więc, można by rzec, w idealnym wręcz momencie, by powiedzieć o nim: ‘najlepszy progrockowy prezent w sam raz pod choinkę’.

Dla wielu niniejsza płyta jest sporym zaskoczeniem. Wydawało się przecież, że nie ma już szans na powrót Pallas w klasycznym składzie. Dwie ostatnie studyjne płyty („XXV” z 2011 oraz „Wearewhowere” z 2014 roku) zostały nagrane z nowym wokalistą (Paul Mackie), a od premiery ostatniego albumu z Alanem Reedem na pokładzie („The Dreams Of Men”) minęło już ponad 18 lat. Tymczasem od kilku miesięcy docierały do nas nieśmiałe zapowiedzi powrotu do współpracy panów Nialla Mathewsona, Graeme’a Murraya, Ronniego Browna i Alana Reeda…

Tuż przed Świętami słowo stało się ciałem i tak oto trzymamy w ręku album „The Messenger” – prawdopodobnie ostatnią ważną progrockową płytę 2023 roku. To pierwszy w historii Pallas album nagrany przez czteroosobowy skład muzyków. Na płycie nie ma perkusisty, a programowane bębny są dziełem duetu Niall Matthewson – Ronnie Brown.

Album „The Messenger” zawiera bardzo szerokie spektrum muzycznych emocji, łączące mrok z optymizmem, mocne rockowe melodie z momentami introspekcji i muzycznej euforii. Jest rockowo, ale są chwile pełne czułości i liryki. Ale przez cały czas trwania tej płyty słychać potęgę brzmienia oraz autentyczną radość grania. Znajdujący się w dobrej formie wokalnej Alan Reed opisuje to w taki sposób: „Od wielu lat myślałem, że Pallas to dla mnie zamknięty rozdział.. Bardzo długo nie rozmawialiśmy ze sobą. Ale dość wcześnie usłyszałem muzykę skomponowaną przez moich kolegów i wiedziałem, że będzie to wyjątkowy album. Więc – żeby niepotrzebnie nie wdawać się w szczegóły – po prostu wróciłem! I nie mogę się doczekać, aż ludzie usłyszą tę płytę, z której jestem dumny, że mogę być jej częścią”.

Na program trwającego 50 minut albumu składa się sześć kompozycji. Otwierające całość nagranie „Sign Of The Times” odróżnia się od reszty tym, że to nie tylko świetny początek i wgniatająca w fotel potężna dawka bardzo solidnego prog rocka, ale tym, że główne partie wokalne prowadzone są przez Graeme’a Murraya. Dopiero w utworze nr 2, „The Great Attractor”, w świetle reflektorów staje charyzmatyczny, obdarzony rozpoznawalnym głosem Alan Reed. I od razu słyszymy że jest on w rewelacyjnej formie. Co zresztą udowadnia w kolejnym utworze, ekologicznej pieśni „Fever Pitch”. „Heavy Air” to spokojny, nastrojowy, dostojnie rozwijający się utwór, zwieńczony soczystym gitarowym solo Mathewsona. Zaraz po nim pojawia się kompozycja „The Nine”. To kolejny spokojny utwór, w którym Pallas konsekwentnie buduje nastrój i w kilku miejscach sięga po niespodziewane środki artystycznego wyrazu, jak na przykład rapowanie pewnych wokalnych fraz. Ale nie jest to element burzący nastrój tej epickiej kompozycji. Na finał szkoccy muzycy zostawili kompozycję tytułową. „The Messenger” to 13 minut porządnego, epickiego prog rocka naznaczonego niezliczoną ilością elementów świadczących, że Pallas to zespół, który wciąż ma wiele do powiedzenia. To kompozycja, jakich oczekuje się od zespołu pokroju grupy Pallas, która, było nie było, już od 40 lat nadaje ton i wyznacza trendy w neoprogresywnym gatunku. Wielowątkowość, meandryczny plot melodii wokalnych, orkiestracje, chóry, partie gitar akustycznych… Czegóż tu nie ma w tej imponującej pod każdym względem kompozycji?...

Album „The Messenger” to potęga symfonicznego brzmienia, to epickie aranżacje, to rewelacyjna gra instrumentalistów oraz udany powrót Alana Reeda. Jest to album, który narasta i który odwdzięcza się słuchaczowi z każdym kolejnym przesłuchaniem. Słychać na nim potęgę symfonicznego brzmienia oraz dojrzałość muzyczną kwartetu z Aberdeen.

Nowa muzyka Pallas jest gęsta, czasami mroczna, ale w każdej minucie fascynująca. Pod względem literackim zespół utkał muzyczny gobelin, którego wątki przeplatają się od tematu troski o środowisko naturalne po widmo zimnej wojny, która we współczesnych realiach ponownie przybrała na sile. Dostaje się też przywódcom i możnym tego świata, którym Alan (na co dzień jest reporterem BBC) zarzuca brak zdolności do zrobienia czegokolwiek poza dolewaniem oliwy do ognia. A z muzycznego punktu widzenia „The Messenger” jest świadectwem zdolności zespołu do ewolucji brzmienia, pozostając jednocześnie wiernym swoim muzycznym korzeniom. Świetna płyta na Święta. Wspaniałe podsumowanie tego całkiem obfitego w ciekawe progrockowe pozycje roku. Polecam!!!

‘The album that many believed would never be made, is here. And it’s about to blow your socks off!’

Forty years ago a band from Aberdeen recorded, not one, but two of the seminal rock albums of the 80s.

Now the classic Pallas line-up returns with ‘The Messenger’, an album which takes the preoccupations of that earlier age, and brings them right up to date. Where ‘The Sentinel’ echoed the concerns of the cold war and the shadows it cast on all of us, ‘The Messenger’ finds the band reacting to the existential threats to the world we find ourselves in. From what we’ve done to the world, to the politics that shape it.

Capturing the bleakness that many of us feel at how the world continues to turn, it nevertheless contains hope. A light in darkness, that all may not be lost. There is no outside help. No Sentinel to save us. This time the solution lives within us all.

This is an album which repays countless listens. With ‘The Messenger’, Pallas have created a rich musical tapestry which weaves back and forth from environmental concerns to a cold war grown hot once again. And the seeming inability of our leaders to do anything but pour fuel on the flames.

Featuring tracks like 'Sign Of The Times', 'The Great Attractor', 'Fever Pitch', 'Heavy Air', 'The Nine', and the eponymous 'The Messenger', the album encapsulates a spectrum of emotions, blending darkness with optimism, robust rock melodies with moments of introspection and marvel, It rocks out, yet has moments of tenderness and wonder.

Alan Reed, who rejoined the band after more than a decade as a solo artist explains.

‘I thought I’d finally got Pallas out of my system. We hadn’t spoken in a very long time.
But I heard this music at a fairly early stage, and knew there was a very special album here.
So - not to put too fine a point on it - I rejoined!’
