"Handle With Care" to trzecia płyta amerykańskich mistrzów crossover-thrash, która nie wprowadziła znaczących zmian do muzyki wykonywanej przez Nuclear Assault. Jak się potem miało okazać, była to także ostatnia płyta tak ciepło przyjęta zarówno przez krytyków, jak i fanów. Nie zmienia to faktu, że na albumie zawarty został porządny kawał wysokiej klasy metalowej łupaniny.

"Handle With Care" to ostra jazda od początku do końca, utrzymana w całości (no może oprócz kilku fragmentów ostatniego utworu, ale o tym później) w szybkich tempach. Melodii nie znajdziemy tutaj zbyt wiele. Jedyne takie fragmenty to początek "Inherited Hell" czy kilka refrenów. Nie jest to oczywiście przebojowość znana z bardziej klasycznych odmian ciężkiej muzyki, ale wystarcza aby zapamiętać poszczególne utwory i je nawet zanucić. Poza tym pojawia się tutaj wiele smaczków i przerywników, takich jak "Funky Noise" czy ultra-szybki, częściowo blastowany i ledwo półminutowy "Mother's Day". Mamy także samplowane wypowiedzi w "Torture Tactics". Jednak wszystko to, co opisałem, to jedynie dodatki. Skupmy się na rdzeniu Nuclear Assault. Są to przede wszystkim piekielnie ostre riffy Anthony'ego Bramante i Johna Connolly'ego podparte szybką perkusją Glenna Evansa oraz cudownie bulgoczącym basem Dana Lilkera. Nad tym wszystkim góruje skrzecząco-krzyczany wokal wspomnianego Connolly'ego. Nieco ponad pół godziny w tym towarzystwie mija nadzwyczaj szybko, a po zakończeniu pozostaje niedosyt. Najpiękniejsza w tego rodzaju płytach jest ich prostota - panowie prą do przodu, nie bawią się w jakieś skomplikowane struktury i mają duży dystans do swojej twórczości. Jedynie wieńczący całość "Trail Of Tears" nieco wyróżnia się w tym gronie, gdyż między thrashowe fragmenty zgrabnie wpleciono melodyjne zwolnienia. Brzmi to naprawdę dobrze, a co najważniejsze - nadal brzmi to jak Nuclear Assault.

"Handle With Care" to płyta w swoim gatunku znakomita, crossover-thrash najwyższej klasy. Każdy fan tego gatunku zna ją pewnie na pamięć, a reszcie polecam - doskonały przykład na to, jak można tworzyć luzacką muzykę na najwyższym poziomie.

Starting off by saying ‘Survive’ is considered by many to be their best (or at least most aggressive) album but ‘Handle with Care’ is definitely my personal favourite. It’s possible this might have been caused by ‘Handle…’ being my first Nuclear Assault album. I’ve always had difficulties trying to decide whether ‘Handle…’ or ‘Survive’ was the superior album. Ah well, they both are the core of Nuclear Assault quality.

‘Emergency’ has got to be one of their lyrically fastest thrashers ever (not counting their short grindy tunes) and a logical follow up to the earlier ‘Equal Rights’ on Survive. It’s hard to keep up with John Connelly’s words on the verses here. And over all there are plenty of speedy thrashers here, more than enough to keep any Nuclear Assault fan happy. ‘New Song’ is as powerful as it is catchy. Which goes for ‘Search and Seizure’ and ‘F#’ as well. Also a lot of hails go to ‘Trail Of Tears’. These angry thrashers managed to write a more than decent thrash metal power ballad.

But the award best song actually does NOT go to any of the fast songs. ‘Critical Mass’ which remains to this day one of the most powerful midtempo thrashers from the eighties together with their classic ‘Brainwashed’ from ‘Survive’. Even the distorted bass sound of Danny Lilker makes sense here! Superb environmentally correct lyrics by Connelly which are really catchy. The way the song progresses from the last line of the chorus (‘Bring on the acid rain’) into the second verse (‘Slightly insane, the type of greed ’) including slide on the guitar is just perfect and you can not help but bang your head to this mighty song.

Whether the songs are really fast, syncopated or pretty mid paced, they’re all remarkably catchy here and the band manages to incorporate slightly more melody compared to the previous albums without losing momentum or aggression. No song (not counting short noisy eruptions) can be considered bad or filler. The worst moments on ‘Handle With Care’ are ‘good’ at least.

Since the days of ‘Hang The Pope’ and ‘My America’ the short funny songs have become more and more grindcore instead of crossover. ‘Mother’s Day’ is quite a nice grinder (better than ‘Got Another Quarter’ and ‘PSA’ were on Survive), and it doesn’t take too long to feel out of place here. ‘Funky Noise’ however, being a short funky tune (d’oh) was rather obsolete. Also worth mentioning in the funny-department is the Nazi-sample from the classic 1980 movie ‘Blues Brothers’ at the end of ‘Torture Tactics’.

The production is dirty but never too much. Less transparent than earlier works with distorted bass guitar mixed in more prominently, making this album sound heavier and at times somewhat sloppier. Not that it’s really sloppy of course but it never gets too clean or tight. Therefore the album just breaths the thrash metal atmosphere. As a whole the album manages to combine the speed metal melodies (especially vocal lines on choruses) of ‘Game Over’ with the full on thrash assault of ‘Survive’ and therefore remains the purest and most crystallised Nuclear Assault release. And bloody brilliant as well.

Po lekkim wakacyjnym wydawniczym marazmie sezon przedświąteczny prezentuje się całkiem bogato. Wśród wielu zapowiedzianych pozycji, o których będę sukcesywnie pisał, szczególnie interesująco wygląda imponujący box, jakże uwielbianej przeze mnie grupy Camel. Wydawnictwo „Air Born: The MCA & Decca Years 1973-1984” przygotowano z okazji 50-lecia ukazania się pierwszego longplaya formacji. Będzie ono zawierać aż 27 płyt CD (!!!) oraz 5 Blu-Ray’ów.

Zestaw wypełnią zremasterowane wersje wszystkich albumów studyjnych, koncertowych oraz singli zrealizowanych przez Camel dla wytwórni MCA i Decca. Do tego dojdą trzy recitale dla BBC: BBC Radio One „In Concert” – 6 czerwiec 1974, BBC Radio One „In Concert” – 22 kwiecień 1975 oraz BBC „In Concert” – Golders Green Hippodrome – 29 wrzesień 1977. Kolejne trzy koncerty to na nowo zmiksowane występy: „Live at Marquee Club, London” – 20 czerwiec 1974, „Live at Hammersmith Odeon” – 14 kwiecień 1976 oraz „Live at Hammersmith Odeon” – 1 październik 1977. Wszystkie te zapisy były co prawda już publikowane jako bonusy na poprzednich edycjach albumów zespołu, ale w nieco chaotyczny i nieuporządkowany sposób. Teraz będzie można ich wysłuchać w całości. Nader ciekawie i obiecująco przestawiają się studyjne (w większości niepublikowane) bonusy, pochodzące z sesji do poszczególnych albumów. Nie ma ich dużo, ale na pewno przysporzą sporo radości fanom formacji. Odrzutem z pierwszego albumu jest utwór „Sarah”. Aż pięć nagrań, które trafiły na płytę „Mirage”, otrzymamy dodatkowo także we wczesnych wersjach demo z 15 czerwca 1973r. Dwa mniej znane nagrania „Autumn” i „Riverman”, zespół zrealizował gdzieś pomiędzy longplayami „Mirage” i „The Snow Goose”. Krążek „Moonmadness” uzupełnią m.in. trzy studyjne dema. I wreszcie utwór „Captured” z płyty „Nude” usłyszymy we wczesnej, nieznanej dotąd wersji.

Jakby tego było mało, albumy „Camel”, „Mirage”, „The Snow Goose”, „Moonmadness” i „Nude” otrzymujemy także w zupełnie nowych miksach stereo oraz 5.1. Ogromna szkoda, że w podobny sposób nie opracowano pozostałych płyt. Być może nie udało się odnaleźć taśm z zapisami wielośladowymi?

Jeśli chodzi o materiały wideo, to poza paroma klipami i fragmentami występów z TV znajdą się tam koncerty: BBC TV „The Old Grey Whistle Test” – 21 czerwiec 1975, Live at Hammersmith Odeon – 1 październik 1977 oraz film „Pressure Points”. Pudełko uzupełni oczywiście gruba książka oraz plakat.

The package also features previously unreleased outtakes from album recording sessions and BBC Radio ‘In Concert’ appearances from 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1981.




Emerging just in time to honour the 50th anniversary of their debut album, Air Born is a sprawling boxed set which, as the title implies, celebrates their years spent with MCA and Decca. This was not always a happy time in terms of the band's relationship with Decca; in particular, after Andy Ward suffered a mental health crisis and attempted suicide, Andrew Latimer wanted to put the band on hiatus for a while to give Ward a chance to recuperate, but heartlessly Decca demanded that Camel put out a new studio album anyway - and pressured them to make it commercially friendly on top of that - which is what led to the critical stumble of The Single Factor.
Still, musically speaking this covers the music which Camel built their legacy on and more besides. Full remasters (and, for some select albums, additional stereo remixes) of all the Camel studio releases from their debut to Stationary Traveller are, naturally, included, along with a range of supplementary material ranging from unreleased studio tracks through to full live performances.

Much of this stuff has emerged in one form or another as bonus tracks over time, but there are a few significant bits of material which are new to this release. The major scoop of the collection is the full demo tape the band recorded in between their debut album and Mirage, which finds early versions of almost all the Mirage tracks present - only Freefall from that album is missing, and instead we get The Traveller, a Uriah Heep-ish piece which seems to have been abandoned as being more in keeping with their debut album's sound than Mirage's. In terms of sound quality, the demo is top notch, and captures the band's musical growth since they recorded their self-titled album marvellously, forming a hitherto-missing link between that and Mirage.

As for the live material, this is largely a mixture of BBC sessions and material released elsewhere, though there are enhancements and additions here and there. Early live performances include the take on God of Light Revisited originally recorded for the Greasy Truckers - Live At Dingwalls Dance Hall release, a funky, Santana-influenced piece. Again, this has been fairly widely repackaged as a bonus track on some issue or other over the years.

BBC sessions here include a June 1974 recording showcasing the band fresh from the release of Mirage, a more expansive 1975 offering giving extensive extracts from The Snow Goose (with the band on excellent form and proving they didn't need the orchestra to evoken the album's magic live), their excellent appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, and a 1977 Sight and Sound In Concert appearance from the Rain Dances lineup primarily focused on that album but also including great takes on Snow Goose material, Never Let Go from the debut, and an absolutely stellar take on Lunar Sea from Moonmadness. Much of this material has shown up as bonus tracks or on bootlegs over the years, but it's nice to get it in fairly definitive versions here.

Rather than presenting A Live Record in either its original or expanded configurations, the box instead offers the complete original live recordings from the different shows which made up that release. This includes a full set from the Marquee Club in October 1974, in which the band both burn through excellent renditions of Mirage-era material and road test compositions which would later make it onto The Snow Goose. The sound quality on this is remarkably good - perhaps the best of any of the pre-Goose live offerings here - and it's interesting how the Snow Goose compositions differ to account for the lack of an orchestra in tow.

Naturally, there's also the Royal Albert Hall full performance of The Snow Goose with orchestra from 1975, which would form the basis of the second disc of A Live Record; this is enhanced by an encore performance of Lady Fantasy, skillfully adapted to account for the orchestra.

We also get a full concert set from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1976; previously only smatterings of this had been borrowed for the extended CD version of A Live Record or on some reissues of Moonmadness, but having the full show to hand in its original running order is excellent. There's a few technical issues audible - notably some faint buzzing on a few tracks which could be down to the original tapes having an issue or might be indicative of some of the band's equipment having a bit of a moment, but this is a mild blemish easily overlooked, especially since some care seems to have been taken here to tidy up the lives tapes as best as possible.

This live set is especially valuable since it provides a final showcase for the original lineup of Camel - some would say the classic lineup - prior to personnel shifts and their Rain Dances-era drift into a Canterbury-influenced direction. You get Latimer, Ward, Ferguson, and Bardens at the absolute top of their game, with a setlist drawn from some of the greatest albums not just in the Camel discography but in the progressive rock pantheon as a whole, with the setlist finally presented on disc more or less as it was conceived to be delivered onstage; when you think about it, that's absolutely fantastic.

The band return to the Odeon in 1977 for a barnstorming set which, along with some stray tracks from other venues rounding off the Live Record material. The 1977 Odeon show is the fullest document of the Rain Dances lineup live on this set, and it's absolutely superb. Between that and the tracks from Bristol and Leeds, the Rain Dances period ends up being the era of the band that's perhaps best-represented by live material here (with The Snow Goose period a close second).

Other live material in the collection includes a tightened-up reissue of the BBC session previously released as On the Road 1981 (including two tracks - Summer Lightning and Ice - not included on previous releases of the BBC session) and, lastly, a remaster of Pressure Points.

Most prog fans will have at least some of the material here - though the new mixes of Camel, Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness, and Nude are good enough to be worth dipping into (and the previous mixes are also presented so you can judge which you prefer) - but even Camel fanatics probably won't have all of it. If you've got significant gaps to fill in your Camel collection - or if the prospect of all those live goodies have you salivating - it's highly worthwhile, offering the lion's share of their output in one package.

Most prog fans will have at least some of the material here - though the new mixes of Camel, Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness, and Nude are good enough to be worth dipping into (and the previous mixes are also presented so you can judge which you prefer) - but even Camel fanatics probably won't have all of it. If you've got significant gaps to fill in your Camel collection - or if the prospect of all those live goodies have you salivating - it's highly worthwhile, offering the lion's share of their output in one package.

Ósmy studyjny album jednego z czołowych polskich zespołów grunge'owych, zatytułowany „Cochise”, to prawdziwa muzyczna uczta dla fanów gatunku. Nagrany w LaGrunge Studio w Orli pod czujnym okiem uznanego producenta Krzysztofa Murawskiego, a następnie poddany masteringowi przez Richarda Addisona z Trillium Sound Mastering w Kanadzie, album stanowi doskonałe połączenie tradycji z nowoczesnością.

Muzycznie „Cochise” kontynuuje ścieżkę wyznaczoną przez wcześniejsze produkcje zespołu, łącząc energetyczne utwory o ciężkich, niemal metalowych brzmieniach z bardziej subtelnymi, nastrojowymi kompozycjami. Teksty, pełne zaangażowania i emocji, doskonale współgrają z dynamicznymi i kreatywnymi riffami, tworząc harmonijną całość. Album pokazuje, że zespół potrafi pozostać wierny rockowym korzeniom, jednocześnie wprowadzając świeże i oryginalne elementy do swojej twórczości.
Na szczególną uwagę zasługują dwa utwory, „Trouble in the Streets of Happiness” i „Garden of the Bones”, w których na fortepianie zagrał wybitny artysta Leszek Możdżer. Płytę promują trzy teledyski: „Say2You”, „Trouble in the Streets of Happiness” oraz „Den of Thieves”. Trzeci album istniejącego od 20. lat warszawskiego zespołu, założonego przez wokalistę Radka Nowaka i gitarzystę Alka Januszewskiego, to ziejące pesymizmem studium w czerni, w jaką spowity jest cały świat i jaką jest omotane życie każdego przeciętnego człowieka.

W przestrzeni życiowej szkicowanej przez Nowaka każdy jest zaksięgowanym numerem w katalogu („Głosy"), każdego dręczą prywatne demony (ciekawy, finalny „Demony"), każdy na codzień jest obficie polewany gęstą i cuchnącą wydzieliną katastroficznych newsów („Złe wiadomości"). Autor tekstów odwołuje się do klasycznej punkrockowej retoryki, korzeniami sięgającej pierwszego albumu The Clash i naszych rodzimych pionierów gatunku - Brygady Kryzys i Tiltu. Opowiada jednak o rzeczywistości już zgoła innej niż ta sprzed ćwierć wieku, bo o rzeczywistości kreowanej przez mętną politykę na rodzimym podwórku i atmosferę po zamachach terrorystycznych na świecie. A że w dobie globalizmu i my staliśmy się częścią świata, więc w konsekwencji otrzymujemy podwójny koktail, po którym faktycznie może zrobić się czarno przed oczami. Muzyka, jak na teksty przystało, też raczej bliższa jest garażu niż wypasionego studia nagraniowego. Ale to akurat nie wada, bo generalnie trzyma się postpunkowej, indie-rockowej poetyki.
A słucha się tego o wiele lepiej i emocjonalniej niż tych wszystkich nibyrockowych wykonawców przymilających się decydentom od radiowych playlist.

“Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli” to druga płyta trójmiejskich Garsów na której jest wolniej, ciemniej i bardziej depresyjnie. Mocno osadzona sekcja i soczyste gitary tworzą gęstą, duszną atmosferę i emocjonalny ciężar za sprawą tekstów o dramacie człowieka w trakcie konfliktów. Gars łączy melancholię ze wściekłością. Odrobili lekcję ze znajomości takich post metalowych zespołów, jak Amen Ra czy Neurosis. Wciąż słychać u nich echa fascynacji francuską sceną screamo z Le pre je ou souis mort na czele ale także echa gitarowej alternatywy sprzed dwóch dekad typu Shellac czy Fugazi. Korzeniami natomiast mocno sięgają nowojorskiego hardcore'a spod znaku Biohazard.

Tym, co wyróżnia nową płytę Gars na scenie post hardcore/metal jest osiągnięte brzmienie. Klasyczne gitary i wzmacniacze, minimalna ilość efektów i postprodukcji sprawiły, że Garsi w 2012 roku brzmią żywcem jak z lat 90. To też pewnie sprawiło, że miksu i masteringu płyty podjął się twórca brzmienia Nirvany, Skin Yard czy Mudhoney – Jack Endino.

Trójmiejscy muzycy nie bali się zaprosić do współpracy przy nagraniach tak różnych osób, jak Konrad Siedlecki z Radia Bagdad, Marzena Drzeżdżon z Empire, Asia Kucharska z Kiev Office czy Krzysztof Jakub Szwarc z zespołu Nieszksypczrze, który dograł niezwykłe partie altówki.



Grupa GARS powstała w Trójmieście w 2008 roku, więc są zespołem stosunkowo młodym . Tworzy go piątka muzycznych „Samców Alfa” (po wysłuchaniu ich ostatniego krążka mogę śmiało tak o nich napisać): Przemysław Lebiedziński – wokal i sample, Adam Piskorz – bas, Jakub Rusakow – gitara, Miłosz Rusakow – perkusja oraz Radek Skowroński – gitara. Ich dotychczasowe dokonania to EP-ka „Numer zero” z 2008 roku, i LP „Gdzie akcja rozwija się” z roku 2011. Oba wydawnictwa wydane własnym sumptem. Trzeci, recenzowany właśnie przeze mnie krążek to wydany w 2012 roku przez No Sanctuary Records „Gruzy absolutu / rewizja symboli”

Gdybym miał go opisać jak najkrócej i najdobitniej przy tym, to ciśnie mi się na usta jedno określenie: „zajebiście fantastycznie dołująco – miażdżące wydawnictwo”. I przyznam, że takie oblicze GARS- ów łykam od razu. Pomijając symbolikę tytułów (konia z rzędem temu kto odgadnie o co w nich chodzi czy o daty czy to jakiś kod), nieważne, że po wysłuchaniu tekstów człowiek czuję się jak coś co czasem na trawniku przylepia się do podeszwy, to nic, że tak destrukcyjnie działa na psyche, że po jej wysłuchaniu człowiek ma ochotę obwiesić się ładunkami i udać się do najbliższej siedziby ZUS- u , Urzędu Skarbowego lub innego z tych instytucji, które najczęściej psują nam krew. I p…….le to czy czekałyby na mnie za to dziewice. Warstwa tekstowa tej płyty to życie. Ale nie to z Pudelka czy też innego tego typu gówna. To życie pełne niewygody, przeciwności i kontrowersji, to życie zwykłych szarych ludzi i ich problemy, ich reakcje i walka z wiatrakami, hipokryzje i zakłamania, wojny, okrucieństwo wobec innych ludzi i zwierząt. I to wszystko wykrzyczane wręcz w naszym ojczystym języku do mikrofonu, tym dobitniej więc trafiające do słuchacza.

Co do muzyki zaś to ten krążek to dźwiękowy kafar. Miażdży i nie pozostawia jeńców. Jeżeli potrzebujecie rozładować swoje frustracje i wyrzygać gorycz, która pali od wewnątrz to ta płyta jest do tego stworzona. Kanonada perkusji, przesterowane, „brudno” brzmiące gitary, miażdżący i wbijający się w mózg bas i kapitalnie dopasowane do tego wokale. A to wszystko w ostrym, hardcore’owym tempie. Może utraciłem część słuchu, może sąsiedzi przestaną odpowiadać mi „dzień dobry”, może za jakiś czas pies wypełznie spod wanny. Mam to gdzieś. Było warto. A do tego samo brzmienie tej płyty. Żywcem wyrwana z lat 90. Chylę czoła za to, co wycisnął z tej płyty Jack Endino (to ten od brzmienia płyt Nirvany i Mudhoney). Nie można było tego zrobić lepiej. Potęga , soczystość a przy tym selektywnie bez zarzutu. Dodam jeszcze, że dużo „smaczku” dodali tej płycie także zaproszeni goście: Konrad Siedlecki z Radia Bagdad, Marzena Dreżdżon z Empire, Aśka Kucharska z Kiev Office, Krzysztof Jakub Szwarc z Nieszksypczrze. Doborowe towarzystwo.

Może powiecie, że słuchanie tej płyty tyle razy mnie odmóżdżyło, ale nota jest wysoka

Warstwa tekstowa nigdy nie była dla mnie najważniejsza w muzyce. Szanuje jednak grupy, które starają się stawiać słowa na równi z muzyką. Często wychodzi z tego wielopoziomowe arcydzieło lub intrygujący koncept. Niemniej jednak zespoły eksplorujące tematykę społeczno-polityczną czy też geopolityczną zawsze najmniej mnie interesowały, a właśnie w takiej niszy porusza się trójmiejski Gars. Często zdarza się, że takie grupy działają tylko dla wyładowania ogólnej frustracji, czy goryczy jaka w nich wzbiera, używając do tego niecenzuralnych i nieskładnych zdań. Taka muzyka nie ma dla mnie wtedy żadnej wartości, może po za „gimnastyczną”, bo można się przy niej efektywnie wyładować. Na całe szczęście, mimo przewijającego się tu i ówdzie patetyzmu i czasami zbędnej pretensjonalności, Gars używa słów, jako całkiem sprawnego oręża unikając przy tym wulgaryzmów.

Już tytuły utworów, co bardziej zainteresowanym życiem politycznym posłużą jako wskazówka, że grupa z Trójmiasta należy do zespołów „zaangażowanych”. Swoją drogą zabawa w rozszyfrowywanie ukrytych w tytułach poszczególnych kompozycji dat jest całkiem zajmująca. W paru miejscach musiałem zasięgnąć wiedzy „wujka Google” i wciąż nie wiem do czego odnosi się jedna z dat. Mogę jednak zdradzić, że pojawiają się tu m.in. takie wydarzenia jak wstąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej, czy też NATO etc. Reszty nie zdradzę, bo nie chcę psuć zabawy. Przejdźmy wreszcie do muzyki, bo to jednak ona powinna być głównym tematem recenzji. Gars na swojej drugiej płycie obciąża brzmienie i wkracza w ramy post-metalu z domieszką hardcore’u. Pierwszy na krążku utwór jeszcze o tym nie przekonuje, bo to tak naprawdę post-rockowa introdukcja, która w delikatny sposób zaznajamia nas z ogólnym klimatem muzyki jaką przyjdzie nam słuchać przez następne trzydzieści parę minut. Zaraz po niej jednak przychodzi pora na pierwszy singiel, do którego powstał bardzo interesujący komiksowy teledysk. 270492 to mocna, bezkompromisowa kompozycja, a nakręcony do niej obrazek tylko to uwydatnia. Oglądając go, zwróćcie uwagę, jak świetnie muzyka łączy się tu z obrazem. Z kolei Miłosz Rusakow świetnie wykorzystał w tym utworze swój zestaw perkusyjny sprawiając, że wielokrotnie zdaję się nam, że przenieśliśmy się gdzieś na front. W końcu płyta opowiada o dramacie człowieka w trakcie konfliktów...

Grupa nie poprzestaje jednak na destrukcyjnym brzmieniu swoich instrumentów, ale chętnie oddala się w stonowane, przepełnione emocjami rejony, które nadają albumowi „Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli” ludzkiego czynnika. Pomagają w tym liczni goście z różnych muzycznych światów. Oklaski dla zespołu za taką odwagę, bo kto by się spodziewał na tej płycie dziewczyny, która wydzierała się na scenie „polsatowskiego” show Must Be The Music, czy Asi Kucharskiej z Kiev Office, która w tak piękny sposób pomaga zamknąć ten album. Oprócz nich na krążku udziela się Konrad Siedlecki z Radia Bagdad i Krzysztof Jakub Szwarc z Nieszksypczrze, który w paru utworach czarują brzmieniem swojej altówki.

Wspomniałem o brzmieniu… Miksem i masteringiem zajmował się taki jeden „szaraczek”, co odpowiadał wieki temu za brzmienie takich grup, jak Nirvana, czy Mudhoney… Jack Endino chyba się nazywa, może znacie? No dobra, ale teraz na poważnie. Coraz więcej polskich zespołów sięga po pomoc zagranicznych producentów i to cieszy, bo nasze grupy w końcu zaczynają brzmieć na światowym poziomie. Tak też jest z Gars. Ich najnowszy album śmiało postawiłbym na półce wśród zagranicznych gwiazd tego gatunku. Nie dość, że płyta ma solidny „sound” to jeszcze same kompozycje prezentują naprawdę wysoki poziom. Taki 111111, w którym „wrzeszczy” Marzena Drzeżdżon z Empire (wspomniana dziewczyna z Must Be The Music) to rasowy hardcore z ciekawym wyciszeniem i zgrabnie wplecionym samplem. Z kolei 260112 to już kompozycja bliższa tuzom post-metalu – ciężkie gitary, gęsta praca perkusji i basu, a do tego jeden z najciekawszych tekstów. 280908 dzięki odważnemu użyciu altówki i posępnemu klimatowi przyrównałbym do Neurosis. Ponadto, należy zauważyć, że Piołun – wokalista zespołu – ma równie „brzydki” głos jak wokalista wspomnianej formacji – Scott Kelly.

Byłbym zapomniał, ale „hałaśliwcy” z Trójmiasta śpiewają wyłącznie w języku polskim! Nadaje to muzyce jakąś niewyjaśnioną głębie i szczerość przekazu. Nie sądzę, że będzie to przeszkodą dla zagranicznych słuchaczy, którzy trafią na album „Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli”.

Moje pierwsze spotkanie z muzyką Gars przebiegało w dość burzliwym i absorbującym momencie mojego życia, a jednak w jakiś sposób udało się jej przebić do mojej świadomości i przyciągnąć uwagę, a czasami nawet wzbudzić szczery podziw. Mimo, że teksty w wielu przypadkach pozostały dla mnie tylko ciekawostką to muzyka Gars z pewnością nie raz jeszcze rozbrzmi w moich czterech ścianach. Naprawdę dobry album!

Wbrew opiniom kolegów po piórze, którzy nie zachwycają się twórzością Gars, debiut tej formacji zrobił na mnie całkiem pozytywne wrażenie. Może nie do końca przemawiały do mnie teksty w ojczystym języku, ale teraz już wiem, że Gars w formie anglojęzycznej straciliby na wartości.

Zresztą teksty na drugiej płycie tego zespołu - "Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli", choć pretensjonalne, czasem infantylne i trochę zbyt "proste", to jeden z atutów, bo łatwo się z nimi utożsamić, a przy okazji wkur... na otaczającą nas rzeczywistość. Szarą, smutną i piekielnie niesprawiedliwą.

Nie wiem tylko o co chodzi z zapisem cyfrowym tytułów utworów, możliwe, że każda z cyfr odpowiada znakowi na klawiaturze telefonu (to by było coś!), ale staram się nie zaprzątać sobie tym głowy. Za to do serducha i umysłu WOLNO wkracza dół, pesymizm i ogólny marazm.

Gars robią to, w czym wielu od dawna w tym kraju babrać się nie chce - w ślimaczym tempie budują atmosferę przygnębienia. Tylko po to, aby niczym walec zmiażdżyć słuchacza ścianą dźwięku osadzoną na hardcore`owym kręgosłupie. Sprawdzony patent? Owszem, ale nie do końca na naszym poletku. At the drive`inowskie tło i surowość brzmienia potęgują siłę przekazu Gars i pozwalają postawić to wydawnictwo w czołówce krajowego undergroundu. Ciekawe, co pokażą następnym razem. O ile z tego smutku się nie rozpadną.

The new album from Polish melodic post hardcore band GARS is a formidable landscape of open emotions and weighted textures which find home in a realm of depressive and shadowed cloaked atmospheres. Dealing with aspects of human tragedy, madness, and personal conflict, it is a release which is fully evocative even though lyrically the Polish only delivery hides the full extent of what one imagines is content as impacting as that of the sounds.

Released on No Sanctuary Records, Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli is the second album from the band following on from their debut full length Gdzie akcja rozwija się of last year and their Numer zero EP of 2008. The quintet of vocalist Przemysław Lebiedziński, guitarists Jakub Rusakow and Radek Skowroński, bassist Adam Piskorz, and Miłosz Rusakow on drums, has according to the promo for the new album brought a heavier slower gaited presence than before. This being our first introduction we can only go by that statement but certainly the consuming intensity and fully enveloping richness of the pessimistic coated sounds and massive consumption permeating them gives firm evidence to this evolution of the band’s sound. It is a superbly crafted blend of raging aggression and melodic elegance seamlessly and skilfully entwined for an impressive and enthralling result. As raw as it is heatedly engaging, the album is a triumph which lights up the passions and without doubt one of the highlight releases of the year.

“Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli” to druga płyta trójmiejskich Garsów na której jest wolniej, ciemniej i bardziej depresyjnie. Mocno osadzona sekcja i soczyste gitary tworzą gęstą, duszną atmosferę i emocjonalny ciężar za sprawą tekstów o dramacie człowieka w trakcie konfliktów. Gars łączy melancholię ze wściekłością. Odrobili lekcję ze znajomości takich post metalowych zespołów, jak Amen Ra czy Neurosis. Wciąż słychać u nich echa fascynacji francuską sceną screamo z Le pre je ou souis mort na czele ale także echa gitarowej alternatywy sprzed dwóch dekad typu Shellac czy Fugazi. Korzeniami natomiast mocno sięgają nowojorskiego hardcore'a spod znaku Biohazard.

Tym, co wyróżnia nową płytę Gars na scenie post hardcore/metal jest osiągnięte brzmienie. Klasyczne gitary i wzmacniacze, minimalna ilość efektów i postprodukcji sprawiły, że Garsi w 2012 roku brzmią żywcem jak z lat 90. To też pewnie sprawiło, że miksu i masteringu płyty podjął się twórca brzmienia Nirvany, Skin Yard czy Mudhoney – Jack Endino.

Trójmiejscy muzycy nie bali się zaprosić do współpracy przy nagraniach tak różnych osób, jak Konrad Siedlecki z Radia Bagdad, Marzena Drzeżdżon z Empire, Asia Kucharska z Kiev Office czy Krzysztof Jakub Szwarc z zespołu Nieszksypczrze, który dograł niezwykłe partie altówki.



Grupa GARS powstała w Trójmieście w 2008 roku, więc są zespołem stosunkowo młodym . Tworzy go piątka muzycznych „Samców Alfa” (po wysłuchaniu ich ostatniego krążka mogę śmiało tak o nich napisać): Przemysław Lebiedziński – wokal i sample, Adam Piskorz – bas, Jakub Rusakow – gitara, Miłosz Rusakow – perkusja oraz Radek Skowroński – gitara. Ich dotychczasowe dokonania to EP-ka „Numer zero” z 2008 roku, i LP „Gdzie akcja rozwija się” z roku 2011. Oba wydawnictwa wydane własnym sumptem. Trzeci, recenzowany właśnie przeze mnie krążek to wydany w 2012 roku przez No Sanctuary Records „Gruzy absolutu / rewizja symboli”

Gdybym miał go opisać jak najkrócej i najdobitniej przy tym, to ciśnie mi się na usta jedno określenie: „zajebiście fantastycznie dołująco – miażdżące wydawnictwo”. I przyznam, że takie oblicze GARS- ów łykam od razu. Pomijając symbolikę tytułów (konia z rzędem temu kto odgadnie o co w nich chodzi czy o daty czy to jakiś kod), nieważne, że po wysłuchaniu tekstów człowiek czuję się jak coś co czasem na trawniku przylepia się do podeszwy, to nic, że tak destrukcyjnie działa na psyche, że po jej wysłuchaniu człowiek ma ochotę obwiesić się ładunkami i udać się do najbliższej siedziby ZUS- u , Urzędu Skarbowego lub innego z tych instytucji, które najczęściej psują nam krew. I p…….le to czy czekałyby na mnie za to dziewice. Warstwa tekstowa tej płyty to życie. Ale nie to z Pudelka czy też innego tego typu gówna. To życie pełne niewygody, przeciwności i kontrowersji, to życie zwykłych szarych ludzi i ich problemy, ich reakcje i walka z wiatrakami, hipokryzje i zakłamania, wojny, okrucieństwo wobec innych ludzi i zwierząt. I to wszystko wykrzyczane wręcz w naszym ojczystym języku do mikrofonu, tym dobitniej więc trafiające do słuchacza.

Co do muzyki zaś to ten krążek to dźwiękowy kafar. Miażdży i nie pozostawia jeńców. Jeżeli potrzebujecie rozładować swoje frustracje i wyrzygać gorycz, która pali od wewnątrz to ta płyta jest do tego stworzona. Kanonada perkusji, przesterowane, „brudno” brzmiące gitary, miażdżący i wbijający się w mózg bas i kapitalnie dopasowane do tego wokale. A to wszystko w ostrym, hardcore’owym tempie. Może utraciłem część słuchu, może sąsiedzi przestaną odpowiadać mi „dzień dobry”, może za jakiś czas pies wypełznie spod wanny. Mam to gdzieś. Było warto. A do tego samo brzmienie tej płyty. Żywcem wyrwana z lat 90. Chylę czoła za to, co wycisnął z tej płyty Jack Endino (to ten od brzmienia płyt Nirvany i Mudhoney). Nie można było tego zrobić lepiej. Potęga , soczystość a przy tym selektywnie bez zarzutu. Dodam jeszcze, że dużo „smaczku” dodali tej płycie także zaproszeni goście: Konrad Siedlecki z Radia Bagdad, Marzena Dreżdżon z Empire, Aśka Kucharska z Kiev Office, Krzysztof Jakub Szwarc z Nieszksypczrze. Doborowe towarzystwo.

Może powiecie, że słuchanie tej płyty tyle razy mnie odmóżdżyło, ale nota jest wysoka

Warstwa tekstowa nigdy nie była dla mnie najważniejsza w muzyce. Szanuje jednak grupy, które starają się stawiać słowa na równi z muzyką. Często wychodzi z tego wielopoziomowe arcydzieło lub intrygujący koncept. Niemniej jednak zespoły eksplorujące tematykę społeczno-polityczną czy też geopolityczną zawsze najmniej mnie interesowały, a właśnie w takiej niszy porusza się trójmiejski Gars. Często zdarza się, że takie grupy działają tylko dla wyładowania ogólnej frustracji, czy goryczy jaka w nich wzbiera, używając do tego niecenzuralnych i nieskładnych zdań. Taka muzyka nie ma dla mnie wtedy żadnej wartości, może po za „gimnastyczną”, bo można się przy niej efektywnie wyładować. Na całe szczęście, mimo przewijającego się tu i ówdzie patetyzmu i czasami zbędnej pretensjonalności, Gars używa słów, jako całkiem sprawnego oręża unikając przy tym wulgaryzmów.

Już tytuły utworów, co bardziej zainteresowanym życiem politycznym posłużą jako wskazówka, że grupa z Trójmiasta należy do zespołów „zaangażowanych”. Swoją drogą zabawa w rozszyfrowywanie ukrytych w tytułach poszczególnych kompozycji dat jest całkiem zajmująca. W paru miejscach musiałem zasięgnąć wiedzy „wujka Google” i wciąż nie wiem do czego odnosi się jedna z dat. Mogę jednak zdradzić, że pojawiają się tu m.in. takie wydarzenia jak wstąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej, czy też NATO etc. Reszty nie zdradzę, bo nie chcę psuć zabawy. Przejdźmy wreszcie do muzyki, bo to jednak ona powinna być głównym tematem recenzji. Gars na swojej drugiej płycie obciąża brzmienie i wkracza w ramy post-metalu z domieszką hardcore’u. Pierwszy na krążku utwór jeszcze o tym nie przekonuje, bo to tak naprawdę post-rockowa introdukcja, która w delikatny sposób zaznajamia nas z ogólnym klimatem muzyki jaką przyjdzie nam słuchać przez następne trzydzieści parę minut. Zaraz po niej jednak przychodzi pora na pierwszy singiel, do którego powstał bardzo interesujący komiksowy teledysk. 270492 to mocna, bezkompromisowa kompozycja, a nakręcony do niej obrazek tylko to uwydatnia. Oglądając go, zwróćcie uwagę, jak świetnie muzyka łączy się tu z obrazem. Z kolei Miłosz Rusakow świetnie wykorzystał w tym utworze swój zestaw perkusyjny sprawiając, że wielokrotnie zdaję się nam, że przenieśliśmy się gdzieś na front. W końcu płyta opowiada o dramacie człowieka w trakcie konfliktów...

Oklaski dla zespołu za taką odwagę, bo kto by się spodziewał na tej płycie dziewczyny, która wydzierała się na scenie „polsatowskiego” show Must Be The Music, czy Asi Kucharskiej z Kiev Office, która w tak piękny sposób pomaga zamknąć ten album. Oprócz nich na krążku udziela się Konrad Siedlecki z Radia Bagdad i Krzysztof Jakub Szwarc z Nieszksypczrze, który w paru utworach czarują brzmieniem swojej altówki.

Wspomniałem o brzmieniu… Miksem i masteringiem zajmował się taki jeden „szaraczek”, co odpowiadał wieki temu za brzmienie takich grup, jak Nirvana, czy Mudhoney… Jack Endino chyba się nazywa, może znacie? No dobra, ale teraz na poważnie. Coraz więcej polskich zespołów sięga po pomoc zagranicznych producentów i to cieszy, bo nasze grupy w końcu zaczynają brzmieć na światowym poziomie. Tak też jest z Gars. Ich najnowszy album śmiało postawiłbym na półce wśród zagranicznych gwiazd tego gatunku. Nie dość, że płyta ma solidny „sound” to jeszcze same kompozycje prezentują naprawdę wysoki poziom. Taki 111111, w którym „wrzeszczy” Marzena Drzeżdżon z Empire (wspomniana dziewczyna z Must Be The Music) to rasowy hardcore z ciekawym wyciszeniem i zgrabnie wplecionym samplem. Z kolei 260112 to już kompozycja bliższa tuzom post-metalu – ciężkie gitary, gęsta praca perkusji i basu, a do tego jeden z najciekawszych tekstów. 280908 dzięki odważnemu użyciu altówki i posępnemu klimatowi przyrównałbym do Neurosis. Ponadto, należy zauważyć, że Piołun – wokalista zespołu – ma równie „brzydki” głos jak wokalista wspomnianej formacji – Scott Kelly.

Byłbym zapomniał, ale „hałaśliwcy” z Trójmiasta śpiewają wyłącznie w języku polskim! Nadaje to muzyce jakąś niewyjaśnioną głębie i szczerość przekazu. Nie sądzę, że będzie to przeszkodą dla zagranicznych słuchaczy, którzy trafią na album „Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli”.

Moje pierwsze spotkanie z muzyką Gars przebiegało w dość burzliwym i absorbującym momencie mojego życia, a jednak w jakiś sposób udało się jej przebić do mojej świadomości i przyciągnąć uwagę, a czasami nawet wzbudzić szczery podziw. Mimo, że teksty w wielu przypadkach pozostały dla mnie tylko ciekawostką to muzyka Gars z pewnością nie raz jeszcze rozbrzmi w moich czterech ścianach. Naprawdę dobry album!

Wbrew opiniom kolegów po piórze, którzy nie zachwycają się twórzością Gars, debiut tej formacji zrobił na mnie całkiem pozytywne wrażenie. Może nie do końca przemawiały do mnie teksty w ojczystym języku, ale teraz już wiem, że Gars w formie anglojęzycznej straciliby na wartości.

Zresztą teksty na drugiej płycie tego zespołu - "Gruzy absolutu, rewizja symboli", choć pretensjonalne, czasem infantylne i trochę zbyt "proste", to jeden z atutów, bo łatwo się z nimi utożsamić, a przy okazji wkur... na otaczającą nas rzeczywistość. Szarą, smutną i piekielnie niesprawiedliwą.

Nie wiem tylko o co chodzi z zapisem cyfrowym tytułów utworów, możliwe, że każda z cyfr odpowiada znakowi na klawiaturze telefonu (to by było coś!), ale staram się nie zaprzątać sobie tym głowy. Za to do serducha i umysłu WOLNO wkracza dół, pesymizm i ogólny marazm.

Gars robią to, w czym wielu od dawna w tym kraju babrać się nie chce - w ślimaczym tempie budują atmosferę przygnębienia. Tylko po to, aby niczym walec zmiażdżyć słuchacza ścianą dźwięku osadzoną na hardcore`owym kręgosłupie. Sprawdzony patent? Owszem, ale nie do końca na naszym poletku. At the drive`inowskie tło i surowość brzmienia potęgują siłę przekazu Gars i pozwalają postawić to wydawnictwo w czołówce krajowego undergroundu. Ciekawe, co pokażą następnym razem. O ile z tego smutku się nie rozpadną.

This being our first introduction we can only go by that statement but certainly the consuming intensity and fully enveloping richness of the pessimistic coated sounds and massive consumption permeating them gives firm evidence to this evolution of the band’s sound. It is a superbly crafted blend of raging aggression and melodic elegance seamlessly and skilfully entwined for an impressive and enthralling result.
