Przyznam, iż niewiele wiem o indonezyjskich purystach black metalu, zespole Veneration.
Zdecydowanie jeden z najmocniejszych debiutów undergroundowych 2020 roku.
Myślę, że miłośnicy Mortuary Drape, Nifelheim, Sarcófago, Beherit, Darkthrone będą zadowoleni...



Veneration are a band from Indonesia that plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 ep "Thy Infernal" which was released by Fallen Temple.

Ritualistic spoken word parts start off the ep before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the music being heavily rooted in the 90's.

Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Dark sounding melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing, solos and leads and clean playing can also be heard briefly on the closing track as well the songs as adding in some first wave touches.

Veneration plays a style of occult black metal that is very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave tradition. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover Occultism and Luciferian themes.

In my opinion Veneration are a very great sounding old school occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep.

Hellbastard powstał w 1984 roku w Wielkiej Brytanii. Historia tego zespołu jest w chuj długa i pogmatwana. Wystarczy tylko wspomnieć, że członkowie zespołu w wyniku różnych kłótni i różnicy zdań odchodzili i zakładali własne zespoły o podobnych nazwach, wydawali płyty i ponownie się godzili.

To tak w dużym skrócie. W 1988 ukazał się debiutancki album Heading for Internal Darkness, który uznawany jest za jeden z kamieni milowych crust punka. Album ten poprzedziły dwie taśmy demo, z których ta pierwsza Ripper Crust uznawana jest za matkę gatunku Crust, od której zaczerpnięto nazwę.

W 1989 roku zespół podpisał papiery z Earache, która to wytwórnia w 1990 roku wydaje nieziemski Natural Order, który mimo, że nie jest tak wściekły jak debiut to zwrócił uwagę sceny zajebistym wykorzystaniem gitary rytmicznej. Płyta to jak i debiut to absolutny mus dla fanów Amebix, Discharge, Sacrilege.

Od tego momentu w Hellbastard następuje rozłam i zespół się rozpada na kilka innych grup. Powrócili w 2007 roku by dwa lata później nasza Selfmadegod wypuściła trzeci album, który już znacznie odbiegał od dwóch poprzednich a muzyka to bardziej taki thrash metal albo crossover. W 2015 wyszedł czwarty i jak na razie ostatni album Feral, który mimo zajebistej okładki muzycznie prezentował się średnio dalej będąc gatunkowo w muzyce thrash.

Ne Obliviscaris z Obscurą, Augury i Fallujah... Polane dysonansowym sosem...
To bardzo eksperymentalne dzieło, które niełatwo zrozumieć.
I może właśnie to stanowi o jego wyjątkowości?

Różne rzeczy w życiu widziałem, ale tak szpetnej i tandetnej okładki jak ta z debiutanckiej płyty niemieckiego projektu Khora, to chyba jeszcze nie spotkałem. Okładka ta przyciągnęła moją uwagę tak bardzo, że aż postanowiłem przyjrzeć się wnętrzu tego albumu. Swoją drogą może tak to miało właśnie zadziałać?

Niemiecko-irlandzki kwintet długo zwlekał z wydaniem swojego debiutanckiego krążka. W końcu jednak po siedmiu latach istnienia Soulseller Records wypuściło krążek o nazwie Timaeus, i czy tego chcemy czy nie, kiczowata okładka ujrzała światło dzienne.

Treść krążka to spłycając czterdzieści minut muzyki, którą można by nazwać awangardowym progresywnym black metalem, na myśl w dość czytelny sposób przywodzi ostatnie działania Ihsahna. Pisząc ostatnie, mam na myśli jego solowe albumy takie jak Arktis czy After. Pierwszym zwiastunem owych podobieństw jest wokalna maniera Kranosa, która z klasycznego growlu przechodzi często w specyficzny skrzek tak podobny do tego, który jest wizytówką Ihsahna. Do tego połamane linie melodyczne, przeplatające się koncepty, asymetrie strukturalne w utworze i połamańce, które brzmią bliźniaczo do tych wykonywanych przez lidera Emperora. Co zaś odróżnia Timaeusa od Arktisa czy innego Ermity? Przede wszystkim klawisze.

Przestrzenne i kosmiczne stanowią odskocznię od porównywanego projektu, a jednocześnie nadają muzyce charakteru i klimatu, co działa ogromnie na korzyść debiutu Khory. No i oczywiście tematyka tak odległa od norweskich lasów i problemów tamtejszej kultury jak to tylko możliwe. No bo jak porównać opowieści o stworzeniu świata, galaktykach, Cthulhu i Green Lantern, a także zmodyfikowanym Tutanchamonie do wewnętrznych wahań podróżnika Fridtjofa Nansena?

Muzyka jest bardzo zróżnicowana, a jednak dzięki klawiszowej podszewce spójna i korespondująca nawet z tą nieszczęsną grafiką wydawnictwa. Do tego jak na dłoni widać, że muzycy sprawnie poruszają się po skomplikowanych konstrukcjach utworów i jasne jest, że byle sroce spod ogona nie wypadli. Niemniej mnie niestety ta płyta nieco zmęczyła. Dla mnie jeden Ihsahn wystarczy aż nadto. Ale pomysłom i umiejętnościom muzyków chylę czoła.

Well, that’s how you kick off a discography! Here’s 2020 slamming another superb debut album over my head, this time coming in the form of Khôra’s “Timaeus”, a sublime concoction of contrasting styles. Merging together a raw black metal feel with progressive structures and strong atmospheric elements, this is another package on top of which genre labels simply refuse to stick. It’s a beautifully scary musical journey, carefully crafted with professionalism, finesse, and an astronomical amount of creepy vibes. And as astronomy goes, this record is quite the stargazer, with a concept based on Plato’s Timaeus dialogue depicting, and quote “the theme of the creation of the universe by three omnipotent entities”. I assume that’s why the amazing cover artwork greets you with a faceless Tutankhamun joined by Cthulhu and The Green Lantern (obviously I’m not a philosophy expert). But even so, the actual sound of this record reaches far greater levels of mystery. Intrigued yet?

The atmospheric sample based intro “Aether” makes for an immersive opening to the album that sets a dark, brooding mood with a well fitted alien feel, before “Noceo” gets the ball rolling on a drilling blast beat and cold eerie shrieks. This track introduces what I feel is the band’s greatest asset, which is the combination of black metal harshness with a raw mysterious feel. It’s mostly due to a texture contrast between the hard-hitting drums and harsh vocals with the compressed reverby guitar tones and obvious melodic aspect. As the album flows into the next song ”l’Annihilateur”, more faces of Khôra’s sound emerge, with a higher emphasis on the eerie melodies and equally eerie layered clean vocals that totally caught me off guard. There’s a fair amount of dissonant ideas in there too supporting the ominous feeling of the music. The progressive tinge makes its appearance as well with more changes of pace within the song and more elaborate ideas.

Over the album’s run time, the band is constantly switching gears between all of these different approaches, but it’s a delight to see how they all come together in a cohesive flow. There’s also a constant up and down feeling with the songs alternating faster more intense sections with more tuned down melodic bridges where the atmospherics truly shine. I like that the atmospheric background is never lost making sure that the music stays immersive and captivating for the entirety of the album’s run time (the synths on Roe to Noo are some of my favorites). The guitar sound also has a decent amount of dissonant melodies and leads melding into the soundscape. I like how the guitar either amps up the somewhat hectic feel of the music but can also settle into some heavy grooves, sometimes having a more death metal edge (see Existence). It’s also in these parts that the vocals often turn to the lower end, nicely complementing the evolution of the music and at least to my ear grasping some early Opeth tones. As the album nears its end, “The Occultation of Time” hits the brakes and trudges on some slower ideas with lots of melodies and clean vocals, providing a smooth transition into the outro. “Void” closes the album on a dramatic tone with raw clean guitars, celestial piano melodies and inhuman vocalizing.

At the end, the one drawback I can find to this record is that despite its extended arsenal of ideas, the somewhat monochrome feeling of creepy on top of creepy, leaves it less memorable than I initially expected. It’s not such a bummer considering that despite my prog love, I found myself more drawn into the atmospherics and the ominous surroundings of the music over the metal stuff. It’s more a matter of just getting lost in its astral aura rather than headbanging or singing along. This is not to disparage the album’s heavy end, but just to spotlight that Timaeus has in my view, some of the best atmospheric work to come out of a debut album and it’s just that expressive in delivering spacey vibes which is something I’ve always been a sucker for. Well done Khôra. I’m sold. Timaeus released via Soulseller Records on April 17th and is also available on Bandcamp.

As the album nears its end, “The Occultation of Time” hits the brakes and trudges on some slower ideas with lots of melodies and clean vocals, providing a smooth transition into the outro. “Void” closes the album on a dramatic tone with raw clean guitars, celestial piano melodies and inhuman vocalizing.

At the end, the one drawback I can find to this record is that despite its extended arsenal of ideas, the somewhat monochrome feeling of creepy on top of creepy, leaves it less memorable than I initially expected. It’s not such a bummer considering that despite my prog love, I found myself more drawn into the atmospherics and the ominous surroundings of the music over the metal stuff. It’s more a matter of just getting lost in its astral aura rather than headbanging or singing along. This is not to disparage the album’s heavy end, but just to spotlight that Timaeus has in my view, some of the best atmospheric work to come out of a debut album and it’s just that expressive in delivering spacey vibes which is something I’ve always been a sucker for. Well done Khôra. I’m sold. Timaeus released via Soulseller Records on April 17th and is also available on Bandcamp.

Para Bellum to czternasty album studyjny amerykańskiego zespołu thrash metalowego Testament, wydany 10 października 2025 roku nakładem Nuclear Blast. Jest to pierwszy album studyjny zespołu z perkusistą Chrisem Dovasem. Testament to amerykański zespół, powstały w 1983 w San Francisco, początkowo pod nazwą Legacy. Historia grupy rozpoczęła się latem 1983 roku, gdy początkujący perkusista Louie Clemente wyruszył z Los Angeles do San Francisco w poszukiwaniu muzyków do własnego zespołu. Kilka dni później pojawił się w domu gitarzysty Erica Petersona. Obydwaj rozpoczęli próby w małym pokoju w domu Erica, grając m.in. utwory Motörhead i wykonawców NWOBHM, opracowując także pierwsze własne pomysły.

OBSCENE GESTURE was formed in 2000 in Los Angeles, California and played intense Thrash Metal/Crossover. The all-star band featured members of Agent Steel, Evil Dead, Steel Prophet, Abattoir and Body Count. Obscene Gesture was: Guy Green (R.I.P. 2016): Vocals, Vince Dennis: Guitars (Body Count / Steel Prophet), George Robb Bass (L.S.N. / Agent Steel), Chuck Profus Drums (ex-Agent Steel) while Juan Garcia from Body Count, Evil Dead, ex Abattoir / Agent Steel was a member during 2007-2009 as well. The album is completely remixed recently by Rob Hill (Agent Steel, Evil Dead), and has the ‘Straight Outta the Gutter’ demo 2006 as bonus. Plus new cover artwork and complete new booklet design. Gesture split up in May 2016 after Guy Green's passing.
