Szybki i melodyjny z nutą 'punka', zachowujący jednocześnie fundamentalne cechy Black Metalu.

Raw black to nigdy nie była moja wymarzona dziedzina sztuki. Z drugiej jednak strony black ze Skandynawii (a dokładniej z Finlandii) to podstawa mojej egzystencji. Postanowiłem się więc zmierzyć z najnowszym dziełem duetu Ondfødt, którego album wyszedł nakładem znanej mi dobrze Immortal Frost Productions.

Dödsrikets Kallelse to drugi pełnowymiarowy krążek kapeli i podobnie jak pierwszy, Hexkonst (wydany w 2014 roku również nakładem Immortal Frost Productions), stanowi nieco ponad półgodzinny zestaw szybkich dwu lub trzyminutowych szotów. I pod tym względem etykietka raw black należy się Ondfødtowi bezsprzecznie.

Inaczej jest jednak, gdy zaczniemy przyglądać się z bliska poszczególnym numerom. Po pierwsze, pomimo oczywistej surowości w dźwiękach i klasyki w konstrukcjach poszczególnych utworów, nie mamy tu do czynienia z tą bezmyślną nawalanką, surową i brudną, która charakteryzuje surowe blackowe kompozycje. Na Dödsrikets Kallelse każdy z dziewięciu utworów ma klarowną linię melodyczną, poukładane riffy i spójne aranże. Do tego mamy klimatyczne wstawki i wprowadzenia w niektóre kawałki (przedostatni Dödens Dröm to coś na kształt ballady, która zaczyna się długim akustycznym wstępem i kończy równie klimatycznie), co czyni płytę po prostu świetną i różnorodną. Jeśli napomknąłem już o momentach spokojnych i lirycznych, to muszę jeszcze wspomnieć o tym, co na Dödsrikets Kallelse przeważa. A są to oczywiście szybkie partie perkusyjne, liczne blasty i pasaże, a także umiarkowanie prędkie partie gitarowe. To zresztą dzięki gitarom album zyskuje swój niepowtarzalny klimat i ciekawe w odbiorze sekwencje riffów. Wokal jest klasyczny w barwie i w dodatku nie wybija się jakoś w znaczący sposób przed partie instrumentalne.

Z tłumu wyróżnia się oczywiście utwór ostatni, cover również blackowego fińskiego Hämysa. Niestety przez swoją umiarkowanie skomplikowaną konstrukcję i nieco przerysowany wokal (nie mówiąc już o chórkach w drugiej części kawałka) przypadł mi on do gustu najmniej.

Najnowsza płyta Ondfødt to kawał dobrej muzyki – różnorodnego, ciekawego, klasycznego black metalu, który chyba nie może się nie spodobać. Co prawda Immortal Frost Productions jak zwykle podkreśla ilość egzemplarzy tego wydawnictwa (1000 sztuk w tym przypadku), to nie musicie się spieszyć, starczy dla wszystkich. Niemniej ja uważam, że ten krążek trzeba mieć.

Occasionally, there is something to be said for an album that 'just gets it right', regardless of any lack of innovation, subtlety or nuance that one might often associate with the top shelf recordings which define and shape their genres. For 2019, Finland's Ondfødt has crafted one such effort which succeeds entirely on its sheer power and production, a record that, played at high volumes, seems like it's just gotten everything right that it wanted to, and is thus a pleasure to listen to. One of those rarities I can sit through a number of times, not really pick out any spectacular riffs or highly catchy melodies, and still come away from thinking I've just had my soul crushed in a memorable fashion. Not a sound on Dödsrikets kallelse sounds like it belongs in a post-1996 black metal universe, and yet it's one of the better albums in this style I've heard in the last couple months.

Now, I don't wish to infer that, by their adherence to very traditional riffing, that this album lacks for dynamics, because it shifts pretty evenly between mid-tempo, late 80s Bathory bravado, faster breaks and a few atmospheric flourishes with acoustic guitars or sublime melodic passages that give this whole affair a very complete, rounded polish. The parallels to other Scandinavian masters such as Darkthrone and Immortal exist, to the point that Ondfødt at no point even flirts with originality, but when you hear the bold, bruising rhythms they're churning out, you're easily swept away to the aesthetic imagery that categorizes such black metal: cruel hearts and cold wastes. This isn't an album with a lot of evil note progressions, or one that uses the smokescreen of rawness to masque its lack of competence and devotion...Dödsrikets kallelse sounds enormous, whether its battering you with a wall of chords that sound like weaponized glaciers rolling around on tank treads, or picking up the pace for a blasted windswept melody. Drummer/vocalist hammers away like a winter battalion chopping wood for its campfires, while his huge rasp hovers just above the rhythm guitars, raving over the musical blizard with just the right depth and sustain.

It's the sort of album where, even when you know where the guitar line is going the first time, you want to take the journey anyways. They help break up the steadier riffing with some thunderous breaks, where the chords are reduced to just bludgeons over the beats, reminiscent of fellow Finns like Barathrum, Ajattara or Horna, so in summary they seem to channel influences from all over Northern Europe. The aforementioned atmospheric parts, like the ritualistic intro to "Den sista färden" or the glistening, sad acoustics that permeate instrumental "Dödens dröm", are perfectly placed pauses in the action that help amplify the emotional resonance of the whole disc. It's one that rewards you for sitting through the beginning, middle, and end, even if the latter is a cover of another obscure Finnish act known as Hämys using a cluster of gang vocal rasps. At around 35 minutes, this album never even comes close to wearing out it welcome, there isn't a riff on it which lasts longer than it needs to and the shorter duration is a good fit to the simplicity and straightforwardness. Just a great sophomore effort, and a fine fit for this time of year.

Szybki i melodyjny z nutą 'punka', zachowujący jednocześnie fundamentalne cechy Black Metalu.

Raw black to nigdy nie była moja wymarzona dziedzina sztuki. Z drugiej jednak strony black ze Skandynawii (a dokładniej z Finlandii) to podstawa mojej egzystencji. Postanowiłem się więc zmierzyć z najnowszym dziełem duetu Ondfødt, którego album wyszedł nakładem znanej mi dobrze Immortal Frost Productions.

Dödsrikets Kallelse to drugi pełnowymiarowy krążek kapeli i podobnie jak pierwszy, Hexkonst (wydany w 2014 roku również nakładem Immortal Frost Productions), stanowi nieco ponad półgodzinny zestaw szybkich dwu lub trzyminutowych szotów. I pod tym względem etykietka raw black należy się Ondfødtowi bezsprzecznie.

Inaczej jest jednak, gdy zaczniemy przyglądać się z bliska poszczególnym numerom. Po pierwsze, pomimo oczywistej surowości w dźwiękach i klasyki w konstrukcjach poszczególnych utworów, nie mamy tu do czynienia z tą bezmyślną nawalanką, surową i brudną, która charakteryzuje surowe blackowe kompozycje. Na Dödsrikets Kallelse każdy z dziewięciu utworów ma klarowną linię melodyczną, poukładane riffy i spójne aranże. Do tego mamy klimatyczne wstawki i wprowadzenia w niektóre kawałki (przedostatni Dödens Dröm to coś na kształt ballady, która zaczyna się długim akustycznym wstępem i kończy równie klimatycznie), co czyni płytę po prostu świetną i różnorodną. Jeśli napomknąłem już o momentach spokojnych i lirycznych, to muszę jeszcze wspomnieć o tym, co na Dödsrikets Kallelse przeważa. A są to oczywiście szybkie partie perkusyjne, liczne blasty i pasaże, a także umiarkowanie prędkie partie gitarowe. To zresztą dzięki gitarom album zyskuje swój niepowtarzalny klimat i ciekawe w odbiorze sekwencje riffów. Wokal jest klasyczny w barwie i w dodatku nie wybija się jakoś w znaczący sposób przed partie instrumentalne.

Z tłumu wyróżnia się oczywiście utwór ostatni, cover również blackowego fińskiego Hämysa. Niestety przez swoją umiarkowanie skomplikowaną konstrukcję i nieco przerysowany wokal (nie mówiąc już o chórkach w drugiej części kawałka) przypadł mi on do gustu najmniej.

Najnowsza płyta Ondfødt to kawał dobrej muzyki – różnorodnego, ciekawego, klasycznego black metalu, który chyba nie może się nie spodobać. Co prawda Immortal Frost Productions jak zwykle podkreśla ilość egzemplarzy tego wydawnictwa (1000 sztuk w tym przypadku), to nie musicie się spieszyć, starczy dla wszystkich. Niemniej ja uważam, że ten krążek trzeba mieć.

Trzeci duży album francuskiego WHORESNATION. Barbarzyński i wśckiekły grindcore z deathmetalowym brzmieniem!



A band that plows through 16 track in 21 minutes, that's gotta be grindcore. You're damn right it is! And a roaring, spitting, raging offering of grindcore it is to boot.

Whoresnation offer us a blast of aural savagery that is high on octane and low on subtlety (and running time). It's full pelt for the bulk of the material, with only some sparse slower parts throughout. Energetic blastbeats propel the short tracks along with relentless power, while the frantic riffing clashes and thrashes with the manic hoarse grunting, both struggling for the listener's attention. It's controlled chaos to the fullest, and has the adrenaline racing through the veins in no time. For most part this is grindcore in the proud tradition of old Napalm Death, Assück, Rot and Agathocles, but in the overall execution of the music I also detect a bit of a powerviolence feel, kinda like Infest or Capitalist Casualties, especially in the energetic delivery. Next to that, there's also a death metal edge to the guitar playing at times, where Repulsion and Mortician aren't far off either. This tense mixture is sure to jolt awake even the coldest of corpses!

And yeah, I know. "This is just one long song, blablabla...". Well, fuck you, because this is just the way I love this stuff, and this album has oodles of aggression, force and conviction, while sounding powerful and utterly menacing. And what could you wish for more? This is the musical equivalent of a toddler blasted out of his mind on sugar, and I love it!

To piss with coffee in the morning, I'll take Whoresnation's "Dearth" instead!!
