Nawet nie wiem, kiedy te trzy lata minęły od wydania „Secret Spies of the Horned Partician”. Wracam do tej płyty regularnie, zresztą jak i do każdego innego wydawnictwa Owls Woods Graves. I szczerze się ucieszyłem na wieść o „Strix”.

Czyli trzeciej pełnowymiarowej płycie zespołu. Myślę, że grupa już na dobra uwiła sobie sowie gniazdo (ha, wyszło mi porównanie wielopoziomowe!) w tej black / punkowo – chuligańskiej stylistyce. Mnie pasuje – sprawa jest prosta, ta muzyka ma być po prostu czymś fajnym, raz agresywnym, a raz melodyjnym. A równocześnie osadzonym w konkretnej stylistyce i klimacie. Stąd też każdorazowo odpalając płytę Owls Woods Graves mam przed oczyma black metalowych chuliganów biegnących przez zimowy las i drących na całe gardło szlagiery o różnej proweniencji. Przy każdej recenzji wydawnictw Owls Woods Graves przedstawiam Wam korowód nazw sceny black metalowej, punkowej, hard core’owej, ale dziś Wam już tej wyliczanki oszczędzę – te szyldy nie zmieniły się drastycznie, może jednych jest tym razem mniej, innych więcej. Cały czas jednak podobnie, jak na wcześniejszych albumach.

Ano właśnie, czy to też nie jest tak, że ten zespół zaczyna zjadać swój własny ogon? Pewnie jakbym był do nich jakoś negatywnie nastawiony – mógłbym tak mówić. Jak dla mnie to chyba jeszcze nie wyczerpali tej formuły, choć nie ukrywam, że trudno mi powiedzieć, czego jeszcze mogę się spodziewać po nich w przyszłości. Pewnie okładki von Rittera, pewnie punkowo – blackowej przeplatanki. Nie ubolewam z tego powodu absolutnie, bo takich kawałków jak „Anarcho – Occultism”, „Black Flame in Our Hearts”, „Say No to Heaven” czy pewnie jeszcze spokojnie paru z tego albumu to mogę słuchać na okrągło. I wiecie – nie znudzą mi się. Z drugiej strony, jakoś nie potrafię wskazać na tym albumie takiego, że tak się wyrażę, hitu jak „Idzie Diabeł” czy „Antichristian Hooligans”.

Pewnie jakbym słuchał tylko Owls Woods Graves to tak, natomiast mając tyle muzyki dookoła, różnego kalibru ciężkości i różnego gatunku, bardzo często łapię się że puszczam sobie ten zespół właśnie by odreagować. I tu w zasadzie zawsze jest to losowa pozycja z ich dyskografii. „Strix” dołącza tym samym do nich.

Czy to dobra rekomendacja dla tej płyty? Myślę, że chyba tak – przecież tego typu muzyki słuchamy, by było nam dobrze. Słuchając „Strix” mam bardzo dobrze.

Pierwszy krążek Owls Woods Graves jakoś tak kompletnie mi jednym uchem wleciał, by zaraz wylecieć drugim. „Secret Species of the Horned Patrician” z kolei na tyle gładko mi weszła, że wylecieć z głowy długo w ogóle nie chciała. Zastanawiałem się zatem, jaki będzie krążek numer trzy. Po pierwszym odsłuchy byłem nieco rozczarowany. Zdawało mi się, że chłopaki chcieli na siłę nagrać „Tajemnicze Gatunki…” vol. 2. Po chwili jednak, dokładnie po kolejnych dwóch rundkach, otrząsnąłem się nieco. Bo przecież czego oczekiwałem? Że Owls Woods Graves nagle zmienią styl? No ni chuja, oni po prostu grają tak, jak im serce podpowiada, i w stylu, który dyktuje puls. Domyślacie się zapewne, że zmian stylistycznych na „Strix” nie uświadczymy. I to w sumie bardzo dobrze, bo kiedy trucizna tłoczona przez Krakowiaków rozejdzie się po organizmie, to robi słuchaczowi naprawdę dobrze. Wiemy, że zespół porusza się w stylistyce black / punkowej (uogólniając)? Wiemy. Wiemy, że lubi między bardziej tradycyjne, oparte na zimnym tremolo, kawałki wrzucić jakiś hicior do pośpiewania? Wiemy. Wiemy, że mnogo tu d-beatów i że nóżka sama przy tych rytmach tupie? Wiemy. A że blasty, wokale krzyczane i czyste, takie nieco pijackie, że równe to pod względem poziomu niemal jak blat stołu i nieźle kopie w dupsko? No jasne, że tak! Wiemy zatem wszystko. „Strix” nie jest albumem ani trochę odkrywczym. Jest to muzyka zagrana przez ludzi, którzy ją czują, dla ludzi… którzy ją czują. Dokonywanie na tym krążku dysekcji kompletnie mija się z celem, bo wyszły by z tego same oczywiste oczywistości, padłoby pewnie kilka klasycznych nazw, i zabrzmiałoby to banalnie. Choć z drugiej strony muzyka Owls Woods Graves jest banalna! Prosta jak konstrukcja młotka, chwytliwa i idealna do zimnego z pianką. Co ja zatem będę się rozwodził. Każdy, komu poprzednie piosenki zespołu się podobały, może po nowe nagrania sięgać w ciemno. A jeśli ktoś w takiej stylistyce nie gustuje, to ja już nic na to nie poradzę. U mnie kręci się od wczoraj non stop. I zapewne pokręci się jeszcze dłużej jak tylko dostanę w ręce kopię fizyczną. Wam też radzę się zaopatrzyć, bo warto.

Raising a vile flag for the malevolent beast which lurks within the shadowy, curse-ridden forest they’d inhabit Kraków, Poland-based hardcore punk/black metal quartet OWLS WOODS GRAVES reassemble for a third round of their pitch blackened vision of street punk. ‘Strix‘ manifests as decadelong built ideal, or, an equitable ratio served per their extreme metalpunk fusion, a style which welds black metal voicing and rhythmus onto oft melodic hardcore punk built framing. The effect here is tough as nails, an immersive roll through pieces which share relevance to ‘old school’ hardcore punk and black metal alike while still retaining the tuneful potential of each.

Owls Woods Graves formed circa 2015 by way of guitarist, vocalist, bassist The Fall (Hauntologist, Over the Voids…) and guitarist E.V.T. (Whalesong) both of whom I believe were original members of Medico Peste as well as long-running members of Mgła‘s live band. Their intent was something they’ve variously described as “haunted woods hardcore”, essentially blackened punk music which appears to frame interest in hardcore punk broadly. I’ve found their sound touches upon the more melodic hardcore side of late 90’s oi!/street punk revivalism and 80’s NY/DC trampling, riff-driven action rather than the usual slopped out d-beaten treatments by extreme metal musicians. You could compare the full effect to anything from (earliest) Kvelertak to Raspberry Bulbs and be at least somewhere nearby their work but these are poor assessments in terms of the melodic knack found on their debut EP (‘Owls Woods Graves‘, 2016) where a quick rip through “Do You Deny the Devil?” should reinforce thier own character. If you are looking for a snarling, spitting and even kinda blasted-at hardcore punk record with some mild black metal inspiration their debut LP (‘Citizenship of the Abyss‘, 2019) pretty much nailed it as the peak of the duo’s efforts prior to expansion. The range of their song-over-song differentiation, vocal expression, general focus on the riff and the beating at hand impressed me right away.

Beyond that first record Owls Woods Graves expanded to a quartet and soon introduced a far more black metal directed sound on album number two (‘Secret Spies of the Horned Patrician‘, 2023) where songs like “Obscure Monastery” were bolstered by the dread of black metal, contrasting with the quick-change prone pulse of their work otherwise while retaining some of the song-along qualities (“Antichristian Hooligan” etc.). This’d more-or-less set expectations for album number three to follow a similar path but with ‘Strix‘ it seems they’ve intended more of a balancing act rather than follow that exact same path. While the hard shouted pummel of the band’s earlier releases is now more front and center they’ve not culled all black metal informed guitar work and instead they’ve blended it within, fusing both realms more seamlessly.

Album opener “They Come Again” resembles this with some immediacy, within the introductory riff even, as they proceed to flow between nauseous black metal drain and muscled-out, shouted hardcore drive ’til the vocal melody introduced nearby ~2:26 minutes into the song feels like a moment of true merger. There were similar movements on the previous album but I’d argue the greater sprawl of ‘Strix‘ is more unflinching in this regard while sporting both variety and more propulsive force on its side. We’re about a minute away from whoa-oh whoa group shouts and a percussive black metal groove (“The Aura of Knives”) at that point and never more than a few minutes into the next idea before its spent and Owls Woods Graves manages to pivot. As a fan of actual hardcore punk with some canonical ties to the 80’s/90’s it is rare that any band manages to infuse -any- extreme metal technique or excess into these forms with appreciation for the tuneful (not just aggressive) nature of the sub-genre. On the right through this album there’s no doubt these folks aren’t trespassers and that taste and fandom are there informing every move.

For my own taste “The Flag is Raised” is the best example of both realms making good sense in conjoin with the thrashing gallop-and-step of its initial movement, the snarl of its declarative verses and the wind-up toward the anthemic street punk (see also: “Black Flame in Our Hearts”) informed lead guitar melody which serves the ride out. If we tap into the heroic, anthemic, chivalric or however you’d describe the melodic side of many black metal bands in Germany, France and even Finland today the you can see how so many are on the verge or indulging in similar melodic punk for effect. That said the kind of ska-punk trot of “Non Entirely Human” is something different of course as we begin to feel the heat near the end of Side A. I could go on with some manner of remark for each of the ten songs included here but the bigger picture here is that they flow together well enough that the ‘Strix‘ experience becomes notably immersive without losing its diabolic edge (re: “Anarco-Occultism”).

I don’t know whether or not that thought will fall right out of your damned ear immediately when “Black Flame in Our Hearts” hits like a circa ’98 Hellcat Records single but it is one of my favorite pieces on the album for that opening melody calling back to my own high school era, redeeming the Norsk black n’ roll rattle of “Nightshifts” before it. Otherwise the album’s second half ends on a much darker tone with the double length “Winged They Come” for its closer, a sort of crust informed epic with bleak, cold dread waiting at its peak. At just around ~35 minutes ‘Strix‘ is around the right length to avoid tiring the punk attuned listener without underfeeding the extreme metal mind. While some of its highs are informed by familiar tropes to some degree it is refreshing to not find the full taint of black metal overtaking their ultimate combination of metal and punk here. This the primary success of Owls Woods Graves‘ work beyond presenting inspired, tuneful yet bleakly narrated haunt. For my own taste it is their finest work to date in terms of balancing hardcore punk and black metal into coherence though I’d generally enjoyed it just as much as their first LP. A high recommendation.

There were similar movements on the previous album but I’d argue the greater sprawl of ‘Strix‘ is more unflinching in this regard while sporting both variety and more propulsive force on its side. We’re about a minute away from whoa-oh whoa group shouts and a percussive black metal groove (“The Aura of Knives”) at that point and never more than a few minutes into the next idea before its spent and Owls Woods Graves manages to pivot. As a fan of actual hardcore punk with some canonical ties to the 80’s/90’s it is rare that any band manages to infuse -any- extreme metal technique or excess into these forms with appreciation for the tuneful (not just aggressive) nature of the sub-genre. On the right through this album there’s no doubt these folks aren’t trespassers and that taste and fandom are there informing every move.

For my own taste “The Flag is Raised” is the best example of both realms making good sense in conjoin with the thrashing gallop-and-step of its initial movement, the snarl of its declarative verses and the wind-up toward the anthemic street punk (see also: “Black Flame in Our Hearts”) informed lead guitar melody which serves the ride out. If we tap into the heroic, anthemic, chivalric or however you’d describe the melodic side of many black metal bands in Germany, France and even Finland today the you can see how so many are on the verge or indulging in similar melodic punk for effect. That said the kind of ska-punk trot of “Non Entirely Human” is something different of course as we begin to feel the heat near the end of Side A. I could go on with some manner of remark for each of the ten songs included here but the bigger picture here is that they flow together well enough that the ‘Strix‘ experience becomes notably immersive without losing its diabolic edge (re: “Anarco-Occultism”).

I don’t know whether or not that thought will fall right out of your damned ear immediately when “Black Flame in Our Hearts” hits like a circa ’98 Hellcat Records single but it is one of my favorite pieces on the album for that opening melody calling back to my own high school era, redeeming the Norsk black n’ roll rattle of “Nightshifts” before it. Otherwise the album’s second half ends on a much darker tone with the double length “Winged They Come” for its closer, a sort of crust informed epic with bleak, cold dread waiting at its peak. At just around ~35 minutes ‘Strix‘ is around the right length to avoid tiring the punk attuned listener without underfeeding the extreme metal mind. While some of its highs are informed by familiar tropes to some degree it is refreshing to not find the full taint of black metal overtaking their ultimate combination of metal and punk here. This the primary success of Owls Woods Graves‘ work beyond presenting inspired, tuneful yet bleakly narrated haunt. For my own taste it is their finest work to date in terms of balancing hardcore punk and black metal into coherence though I’d generally enjoyed it just as much as their first LP. A high recommendation.
