Lata 1979-1980 to pierwszy okres działalności zespołu TILT jako garażowej kapeli rockowej z Warszawy, założonej na jesieni 1979, kojarzonej z punk-rockiem. Oryginalny skład zespołu to Tomek Frantz Lipiński(g, voc), Tomek Rastaman Szczeciński (bg) i gdańszczanin Jacek Luter Lenartowicz - przeniósł się z Gdańska do Warszawy po wydaleniu go ze szkoły, w Gdańsku grał w grupie DEADLOCK, pierwszym polskim bandzie punk rockowym. TILT wykonywał wówczas kompozycje T.Lipińskiego z tekstami J.Lenartowicza.

...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...

Trzeci album krakowskiego Inverted Mind, grającego mieszankę sludge, stoner, doom i post metalu. Rekomendacja dla fanów Crowbar, Eyehategod, Amenra, Dopethrone czy Obscure Sphinx.


Gdzieś mi po głowie kołatała się nazwa Inverted Mind i miałem takie przeczucie, że już raz los skrzyżował nasze drogi. Przegrzebałem archiwum i włala – recenzowałem debiut chłopaków z Krakowa. Drugi krążek jakoś mnie ominął.

I nagle na chatę wjechał album numer trzy. „Three Faces of Madness (A Drama in Three Acts)” wbrew tytułowi nie jest jednak żadnym dramatem. Rzekłbym, że ta pozycja w dyskografii zespołu to nawet niemały sukces, choć mam wrażenie, że jakoś tak przeszedł on po scenie bez echa. Szkoda, wielka szkoda, bo panowie zrobili duże postępy. Wciąż poruszają się w ciężkiej, smolistej sludge’owej stylistyce, ale teraz wydaje mi się, że to wszystko jest jakby bardziej złożone. Produkcja tego materiału jest naprawdę doskonała, niby muzycznie chwyta Was Inverted Mind za gardło i dusi tymi dźwiękami, jednak wydaje się, że ten album pełen jest przestrzeni. Osobiście w tej muzyce znajduję całą gamę emocji: rozpacz, smutek, zwątpienie, melancholia, gorycz. Słuchacz jest nimi targany jak statek podczas sztormu. Chwilami zespół zapuszcza się w niemal post black metalowe rejony, z którymi tak wspaniale zaznajomiło nas Mord’A’Stigmata. Kolejny plusik zaś leci dla wokalisty, który głosem operuje tak jak i instrumentami – koleś faktycznie czuje to co śpiewa, a emocje dzielimy razem z nim. Bardzo to dobra płyta, jedyny problem mam z ostatnim numerem – „Nothing Left”, z melodyjnymi śpiewnymi refrenami jakoś nie pasuje mi do reszty, jest zbyt przyjemny dla ucha. Bez niego, w mojej opinii, ten krążek byłby jeszcze lepszy, a tak – psuje mi to trochę odbiór płyty, szczególnie, że ta kompozycja zamyka „Three Faces of Madness (A Drama in Three Acts)”. Cóż, zawsze można stopować na utworze numer osiem i powracać z powrotem do „Ship To Nowhere”, który otwiera ten świetny album.

Trzymajcie rękę na pulsie, bo ten zespół ma wszelkie predyspozycje, by wybić się poza scenę Rzeczypospolitej i wylądować w innym, większym i bardziej znanym (przy całej mojej sympatii do Defense Records) labelu. Czego im życzę.

Oracle

Na ambitny projekt porwał się ten krakowski zespół, obecny na metalowej scenie już od dekady. Trudno uwierzyć, że gros materiału przygotowali we trójkę (w studiu wsparła ich dwójka wokalistów) – mamy do czynienia z prawdziwą ścianą dźwięku. Całość – niczym „Boska komedia” Dantego – została podzielona na trzy akty: Anger, Psychosis i Grief, a każdy z nich wypełniają trzy utwory.

Tytuły nie kłamią – początek albumu to gniew dosłownie wylewający się z głośników (nie tylko dzięki wściekłym partiom wokalnym). Wraz z „Looking For Shelter” nastrój delikatnie się zmienia (chociaż wokale wciąż trudno zaliczyć do Krainy Łagodności), zwłaszcza w partiach instrumentalnych. Podobnie rzecz ma się z „Discrepancy”, gdzie zahaczają o psychodeliczne klimaty. Generalnie w kompozycjach z tego aktu dużo więcej się dzieje, są bardziej rozbudowane…

Akt trzeci – „Smutek” – wita słuchacza posępną introdukcją do utworu „What If”. Dołujący nastrój wzmaga „When The Fire No Longer Heats”, chłodem wieje już od samego tytułu… Całość wieńczy najdłuższy na płycie kawałek, ponad siedmiominutowy „Nothing Left”. Prawdziwe opus magnum tego albumu. Mrok, agresja, ciężar i piękno spotykają się w tych trzech aktach. Niebanalna płyta…

King’s X to bardzo pomysłowy zespół, który gra złożoną, głośną muzykę w stylu progrockowym z pasją i talentem, z wysokim stopniem technicznej doskonałości oraz muzycznej zręczności i biegłości. „Gretchen Goes To Nebraska” jest powszechnie uważany za ich przełomowy album. Jest to album koncepcyjny oparty na opowiadaniu napisanym przez perkusistę Jerry'ego Gaskill.

Wspaniałe harmonie wokalne i wokal Douga Pinnicka nigdy nie brzmiały lepiej. Album jest pełen światła i cienia od miażdżącego otwierającego riffu „Out Of The Silent Planet”, przez migoczący „Summerland” po delikatnie piękny „Garden At St. Anne’s”. Tak powinien brzmieć hard rock, z pięknymi beatlesowymi melodiami.

King's X appeared like a breath of fresh air in the late eighties Rock/Metal scene. A band going their own way and doing something different to the myriad of hair metal bands that seemed to appear every week. What made them stand out for me, apart from Bassist/Vocalist Doug Pinnicks wild hair style was firstly Ty Tabors guitar playing and sound; very rich and full, heavy without being metallic and interesting chord progressions with a strong emphasis on melody. Pinnick has a great voice in the rock tradition but all the band sing, Tabor and Drummer Jerry Gaskill adding some great harmony work in the tradition of The Beatles and taking lead at times too.
Gretchen Goes To Nebraska is their second album and remains one of their very best, if not the best with a consistently strong selection of melodic heavy rock. For a listen to Tabors inventive playing just listen to his chord progressions at the end of I'll Never Be The Same, gorgeous arpeggios on Mission coming across like Cream's White Room incarnated and Summerland, still one of their most sublime moments and like all the album strong on melodies and hooks. To put it simply King's X write songs with the priority on strong tunes, not overly complex but they've got the musical skills to call upon where necessary.

Other highlights include Pleiades for Tabors subtle climatic build on guitar towards the end and album opener Out Of The Silent Planet, which was also the title of their first album setting the scene for what to expect for the rest of the album with those lush chords and harmonies.

Highly regarded by many Over My Head is pretty much a straightforward rocker and at the time received a fair amount of play on MTV. It has a good riff but there's much more interesting stuff here like Everybody Knows A Little Bit of Something; scratchy guitar on the verse giving way to another great Tabor riff on the chorus and an excellent groove from Gaskill in the drum department.

Don't Believe it (It's Easier said Than Done) features some of their best harmony work as well as simply being another great tune. And so it goes, I'm sure you've got the idea by now, the quality songwriting prevails for the entire album.

At the time it looked like great things were in store for King's X but for whatever reason major success has eluded them. Fortunately their still with us producing great music and Gretchen Goes To Nebraska remains one of the great relatively undiscovered gems of the eighties.
