..::OPIS::.. This shit is like fucking candy. Exxplorer's unknown classic "Symphonies Of Steel" is filled to the brim with metal goodness. Perhaps maybe a little bit "too full". This album is like those beakers in high school that you filled with water and then tossed a little weight in and watched as the water over flowed. This beaker must be filled with a bizarre liquid, because if my facial expression was the meniscus, I would be frowning at one moment and smiling the next. I go from loving every note that comes from Ed Lavolpe's twittering fingers to hanging my head in shame at other moments as Exxplorer try too hard, make amateur mistakes and/or mock the very song they are so intimately involved with. While Ed Lavolpe's guitar playing is nothing to frown at, his tone could use a small kick in its bony ass. Fellow axeman Kevin Kennedy is in tow with talent and a general lack of heaviness. The guitars have a vintage sound to them that anyone could enjoy but a slight tonal adjustment would leave one to face a slightly angrier bear. Both rip through a scattering of dual leads and solos across the album. Lenny Rizzo's vocals are decent though varied throughout the album. His vocals in "Going To Hell" are prepubescent. He could be singing this song while having his braces adhered to his front teeth. He makes up for this in the "Objection Overruled" duo where he sounds like Paul DiAnno on the mellow songs on Iron Maiden's self titled. Rizzo's vocals have a natural reverb to them that fills in some of the space they lack. He has the range but the power isn't there at times. Jimmy Gardner's bass playing is fantastic throughout the album and really helps the album matter. He has that 80's bass style down pat. He has a really good tone and is tight throughout the album. Mike Moyer's drums are typical and nothing special but he lays a strong foundation and pounds out some noticeable fills. The album's songs are generally awesome. Opener "City Streets" is a memorable and standard metal tune with a great solo and those old school riffs that no one can live without. It's got plenty of headbanging moments and will make you want to romp around your room while being careful not to make the phonograph skip. "Run For Tomorrow" is, for me, the album's highlight with a great flow after the intro, which, as far as I'm concerned, is a few measures too long, and a powerful essence which leaves me wishing the song was just slightly longer. The band's namesake track chugs and gallops though never amounts to much - a let down because the opportunities were there. Cool solo though. "Metal Detectors" is stuck in my mind as the finest example of metal's acknowledgment of its own image. It's a song we've all heard before, talking about all those things metal talks about. You know...metal, steel... With lines like these, Manowar can sit proudly and smile at their disciples. "I'm hungry for metal, I'm searchin' for steel" or "The power of metal, is driving you near" and "Our numbers are growing, like a metal storm" And my favorite... "Don't let them tell you that metal is dead, they listen to Springsteen, it's gone to their head." Eric Adams would be enthralled with this track. The two tracks / segments which form the "Objection Overruled" section of the album are no lackluster pieces of crap. The the first part is mainly slow, raunchy and doomy until the last two minutes. Basically, I would compare this entire track to "Strange World" or "Remember Tomorrow." I also get a hint of Geddy Lee in the vocals along with DiAnno. Rizzo's vocals are on full display here and they are wearing a fucking full patch covered tuxedo (damn I want one of those!). While the track picks up pace in the second half, It still maintains a general mid paced tempo and has the albums best solo section as well. This is as good as any of Fates Warning's B-sides. It ain't "Fata Morgana" or "Guardian" but I like it just as much as "Giant's Lore" or "Orphan Gypsy." The field has some stumps though. The only-piano second track "Prelusion" is placed terribly and really doesn't prelude anything. It shares a theme that returns at the end of "Run For Tomorrow" though I'm left wondering who had the idea that a four minute piano piece as the second track on the album would help pacing and move the album along. Granted, the piano piece is really good, it just doesn't belong there. Fourth track "World War III" is a ballad. Yeah, they were all the rage at the time and the lyrics really aren't entirely about people dying, machine guns and German bombers dropping their payload on England's Anderson shelters but the song just drags. "Going to Hell" is the album's weakest track by more than a longshot. Rizzo's vocals sound stolen from Jane's Addiction. The song's lacks much drive and though a generally good riff appears once or twice, it is lost amidst awkward chord choices. A skipper if I ever heard one. Still, of all the traditional metal that came out of New Jersey or the USA in general, for 1985, this was out there and tried to stand apart from the pack of NWOBHM imitators. If you're still skeptical that this is really that good, take note that this was originally released by the same label putting out the classic Manilla Road albums. That should be word enough that this is a worthy forged piece of metal. And Exxplorer is still fucking exxploring! Check these guys out if you get a chance, I have a feeling you will feel like it was 1986 again. Don't forget your denim and leather though, or you won't be allowed to enter. ... or raise your fists in the air and shout "The metal detectors are losing control!!!!" ..::OPIS::.. 'Everyone talked about our artiness and our unlikeableness, people completely ignored for decades me saying, ‘We’re a pop band’.' David Thomas With ‘Pennsylvania,’ Pere Ubu welcome you to a barely recognisable secret country drawn out of its own spectral geography… This is much more than just music. '[Pere Ubu] were still creating great works of abstract art, pushing the limits of rock ‘n’ roll to twist into avant-garde explorations of the darkest recesses of the human mind' Classic Rock 'From the beginning they obviously understood the nuts and bolts of popular music, and then loosened them.' Mojo Pere Ubu…post punk merry pranksters hailing from the industrial wastelands of Columbus, Ohio, who released a series of classic singles and a clutch of essential albums before imploding under a cloud of bubbly enforced glee and the departure of genius guitarist Tom Herman to work on oil rigs, only to resurface and resurrect themselves, declaring themselves originators of the “Avant-Garage” sound, and worming their way into and out of the American heartlands, weaving tales as surreal as Don Van Vliet’s musings. It’s no surprise then to find them taking a road trip through this vast landscape in the form of a concept album. Taking inspiration from Conrad’s “Heart Of Darkness”, via their own tribute single when they were simply ‘looking into the heart of darkness’, back in 1998 they took the plunge, first journeying through Pennsylvania, then in 2002 Arkansas, releasing 2 conceptual albums reflecting the world like the mirrors on the front cover of 1982’s “Song of the Bailing Man”. After a 20 year absence Tom Herman returned to the fold for these 2 projects. They really know how to do atmosphere. From 1978’s Dub Housing and “Sentimental Journey” right through to “Monday Morning” they capture the unease of a strange place easily as well as David Lynch. I’m surprised they haven’t crossed paths actually. After all, the industrial scapes of Eraserhead were meant to reflect the wastelands of Ohio and Pennsylvania, and the lead character and lead singer David Thomas had an uncanny likeness, especially when Pere Ubu first hit these shores, wearing a black suit with thin tie and crazy curly black hair, bashing away at bits of metal and wailing unintelligibly. He’s got less hair these days but he’s lost none of the presence. He’s no more intelligible than he ever was but sometimes words defeat the object, and detract rather than enhance the stories being told… and that’s the thing – they are all stories. Stories of the American hinterland – scraps of paper, scribbled notes in a well worn notebook, small creased blurred pictures of an unidentifiable landscape. The contents of a tramp’s pocket. The things left behind in an abandoned house. The songs curl like smoke from the greasy remains of a long used hot plate at the back of an American diner that last saw a lick of paint back when I Love Lucy was all the rage. ‘Art exists to at once reveal secrets and to preserve them’ said Pere Ubu front man David Thomas, and these stories reveal everything and nothing about the half forgotten back door swathes of middle America and its inhabitants, from map reading travelogues to overheard snippets of conversation along the way. ‘All across “Pennsylvania,” people turn off the main roads and find themselves in towns whose names they can’t remember’. A lot of these songs contain a dark menacing quality, probably exacerbated by the fact that the band themselves look a little like the extremely dysfunctional family in Texas Chainsaw Massacre where the local garage sells unspecified meat, and don’t stop for hitchhikers whatever you do. In other places you can feel the dust at the back of the throat as you step into a friendly roadside shack for a welcome break, Pennsylvania contains these juxtapositions, from the Beefheart/Cooder country knees-up of “Sad.txt” and “Fly’s Eye” to the Lynchian cinemascope of “Woolie Bullie” and the nightmarish film noir of “Perfume”, with its wobbly auto tune lending itself very well to the wobbliness of the vocal. Four years later came the second instalment St. Arkansas which takes an even stranger turn as they head further in to the darklands. The autotune wobble makes further headway tipping the vocals into a strange mania, a fever dream of memory and unsavoury characters flitting by on the roadside, and strange laughter in the night from a neon lit motel room. If Pennsylvania was Lynch’s The Straight Story, a fairly normal, though eccentric journey by daylight, then this is Lost Highway… surreal and unsettling and mysterious. ‘I drove the route and wrote down what the Road was telling me’ says David Thomas, the routes being Interstate 40 which runs the breadth of the US, and Route 49, the road where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads. There’s even a song on here called “Hell” so the road seems to be keeping the same company. These two classics have long deserved a vinyl release and finally it’s happening. The folks at Fire Records are re-issuing a lot of their back catalogue and these two records are a fine addition to their work, especially on lovely coloured vinyl, appropriately light and then dark blue. If you aren’t familiar with Pere Ubu then it’s really not a bad place to start. If however, like me, you’re a massive fan of their earlier work but don’t know the later stuff as well as you might then get these and play them to death. The autotune wobble makes further headway tipping the vocals into a strange mania, a fever dream of memory and unsavoury characters flitting by on the roadside, and strange laughter in the night from a neon lit motel room. If Pennsylvania was Lynch’s The Straight Story, a fairly normal, though eccentric journey by daylight, then this is Lost Highway… surreal and unsettling and mysterious. ‘I drove the route and wrote down what the Road was telling me’ says David Thomas, the routes being Interstate 40 which runs the breadth of the US, and Route 49, the road where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads. There’s even a song on here called “Hell” so the road seems to be keeping the same company. These two classics have long deserved a vinyl release and finally it’s happening. The folks at Fire Records are re-issuing a lot of their back catalogue and these two records are a fine addition to their work, especially on lovely coloured vinyl, appropriately light and then dark blue. If you aren’t familiar with Pere Ubu then it’s really not a bad place to start. If however, like me, you’re a massive fan of their earlier work but don’t know the later stuff as well as you might then get these and play them to death. Dire Straits to pierwszy album grupy Dire Straits, wydany w 1978 roku. Został nagrany w studio Basil St. Studios w Londynie, w styczniu 1978 r. Singel promujący tę płytę, Sultans of Swing, stał się przebojem w Ameryce pięć miesięcy po debiucie tego albumu. Pierwszy album Dire Straits oferuje spokojny, niemal minimalistyczny rock, nagrany w klasycznym rockowym składzie dwóch gitar, gitary basowej i perkusji. W przeciwieństwie do punkowych zespołów które dominowały londyńską scenę muzyczną końca lat siedemdziesiątych, muzycy Dire Straits byli znakomitymi instrumentalistami, szczególnie wyróżniał się Mark Knopfler ze swoim charakterystycznym sposobem gry na gitarze. Piosenki napisane przez Knopflera i śpiewane przez niego w bardzo oszczędny, „dylanowski” sposób opowiadają o przeszłych miłościach, miłosnych zawodach, powszednich dniach normalnych ludzi. Największy przebój z tej płyty, Sultans of Swing opowiada historię amatorskiego zespołu muzycznego, grającego w pubie bardziej dla własnej przyjemności niż dla potrzeby, prawie ignorowanym przez słuchaczy. ..::OPIS::.. Diabolical Masquerade to solowy projekt Blakkheima z Katatonii. Powołał go do życia w 1993 roku, a pierwszy album „Ravendusk In My Heart” ukazał się w 1996. Jest to solidna dawka melodyjnego, ale też ostrego i intensywnego black metalu. Czuć tutaj wściekłość i bezkompromisowość, co odróżnia go od nawet pierwotnych poczynań jego macierzystego zespołu. Mimo klawiszy i plastyczności gitar, przekaz jest więc cięty i elektryzujący. Riffy smagają niczym pejcz, a wokal jest bardzo wrzaskliwy i gardłowy. Tym bardziej więc trzeba docenić, że Blackheim umiał to poukładać w tak fascynującą harmonię. Cała płyta jest pełną niespodzianek podróżą w ciemny, magiczny świat. Nie uświadczymy tu przebojów, ale co i rusz napotykamy na jakiś powalający motyw, fantastyczny fragment prowadzony przez płynące gitary lub dominujący wokal. Oba te elementy się uzupełniają i są znakomite. Tak się drzeć zachowując melodykę i śpiewność tekstu to trzeba umieć. No i trzeba umieć odpowiednio to skomponować. Nawet te szybkie i nawalające gradem momenty mają swój muzyczny urok. Sprawdźcie choćby początek miażdżącego, zróżnicowanego i total zajebistego "The Sphere In Blackheim's Castle" albo „Blackheim’s Forest Kept The Season Forever”. Ten drugi też co to jest za numer. Tyle się w nim dzieje i przez cały czas trzyma w napięciu. Ale to tylko przykłady i nie powinienem tu nic wyróżniać. Poszczególne utwory to tylko kolejne epizody tej wędrówki przez te szkarłatno-czarne krajobrazy. Jest w tym taki tajemniczy urok, jakaś mroczna, lecz pełna wdzięku poezja oraz podniosła epickość budowana przez podkłady klawiszowe, teksty mówione i lżejsze zwolnienia. Diabolical Masquerade emanuje niesamowitą energią, ale też bogactwem form, treści i mistyczną otoczką. Dużo tu też dodatkowych smaczków jak heavy metalowe gitary w „Blackheim’s Hunt For Nocturnal Grace” i wokale w „Under The Banner Of Sentiel”. Te drugie autorstwa Dana Swanö z Edge Of Sanity, Pan-Thy-Monium i miliona innych kapel. Jest też krótki numer akustyczny „Beyond The Spirituals Moon”. Patrząc na tytuły utworów można wywnioskować, że Blackheim stworzył płytę o sobie. Sam stał się bohaterem jakiejś złowrogiej intrygi, ale jakiej, tego niestety nie przytoczę. Okładka do kasety Mystic Production nie zawiera bowiem tekstów. Tak wiem, że można przeczytać w internecie, ale ja tego nie robię. Piszę o tym co zostało wydane. Po liryki można więc sięgnąć we własnym zakresie, a ja zachęcam do odkrycia muzyki. Doskonała, zatarta kurzem płyta, z duchem starych czasów. Ravendusk In My Heart was originally released in 1996 and stands as a startling debut of fantastic imagery, shaped by accomplished atmospherics mixed with cold black metal, bringing to mind the early works of Emperor, all brought to life with deeply imaginative tales of fantasy from Blackheim’s realm. The album was recorded at Unisound Studio in September 1995. It was produced by Dan Swano & Blackheim, and mixed by Dan Swano (familiar for his work with Opeth, Dissection, Marduk, etc) This debut album was the start of a long and successful career for Blackheim with Diabolical Masquerade. It certainly stirred great excitement within me for what was to come on subsequent albums. I’ve always enjoyed one-man projects greatly, as it’s always interesting to see the uniform influence of one person with singular ideas for each instrument. There is never conflict of composition, and often the musical result is organic and tight. Blackheim is no different, showing immense talent on “Ravendusk…” and proving his worth as a black metal composer, with some help from Dan Swano. This album looks great on paper, being a debut from a one-man side project of Katatonia. I harbored great expectations for Diabolical Masquerade, and for “Ravendusk in my Heart” in particular, I was sure Blackheim would show his steel by writing some good music. He did not disappoint. This is an ice-cold chunk of black metal, showcasing much versatility in songwriting. Although it is a blueprint for all we know black metal to be, this album is very unique, and distinctive in its own style. Nothing else sounds like Diabolical Masquerade, which is quite an achievement considering the vast amount of BM artists out there. “Ravendusk in my Heart” shows much experimentation. Clearly Blackheim was still crafting the sound of Diabolical Masquerade, still building on what would become DM as we know it today. That makes for a very curious listening experience here. All the songs are different, both in structure and in general feel. There is even a short instrumental interlude with melodic clean guitarwork. The songs never feel formulaic, each one is an idea all on its own, not merely a continuation or a filler. The standout component of the excellent songwriting is the guitars, coldly channeling black metal elements from the immortal tremolo riff to clean, atmospheric interludes. At times, the guitar work is fast and aggressive, but mostly it leans in favor of atmospheric BM. The slower riffs are the memorable ones here, with decent melodies dark enough to feel at home with the cold production. The distortion is thin, and the cleans are rich and warm, distinctly black metal. However, Blackheim incorporated death, thrash and even doom metal elements when writing the guitars on “Ravendusk…”. The drums sound very thin and cold, somewhat distant from the other instruments. The drums weren’t written to stand out here, typical blastbeats and double-times drive most of the album. The only instrument that really stands out is the guitaring, but this isn’t an album made to impress with musical prowess. All the instruments blend together instead of standing out, this album is all about atmosphere. It is very dark, and yet paradoxically melodic at times, rising and falling incessantly. The album never drags or becomes monotonous, the constant change of the innovative composition keeps you listening compulsively. This is, however, a very unique atmospheric album in terms of mood. The album as a whole feels very desolate, very solitary. I find myself enjoying “Ravendusk…” most when listening alone. The atmosphere is somewhat depressing at times, and without attentive listening, much of the depth is lost. The experience is different in solitude, for you are most receptive when you are alone, picking up all the nuances adding to the personal feel of the album, as Blackheim intended. This is an album meant to be a private experience, just as creating it was for Blackheim. This is possibly Diabolical Masquerade’s best album, with diversity in all songs and incredible mood. Dużo tu też dodatkowych smaczków jak heavy metalowe gitary w „Blackheim’s Hunt For Nocturnal Grace” i wokale w „Under The Banner Of Sentiel”. Te drugie autorstwa Dana Swanö z Edge Of Sanity, Pan-Thy-Monium i miliona innych kapel. Jest też krótki numer akustyczny „Beyond The Spirituals Moon”. Patrząc na tytuły utworów można wywnioskować, że Blackheim stworzył płytę o sobie. Sam stał się bohaterem jakiejś złowrogiej intrygi, ale jakiej, tego niestety nie przytoczę. Okładka do kasety Mystic Production nie zawiera bowiem tekstów. Tak wiem, że można przeczytać w internecie, ale ja tego nie robię. Piszę o tym co zostało wydane. Ravendusk In My Heart was originally released in 1996 and stands as a startling debut of fantastic imagery, shaped by accomplished atmospherics mixed with cold black metal, bringing to mind the early works of Emperor, all brought to life with deeply imaginative tales of fantasy from Blackheim’s realm. The album was recorded at Unisound Studio in September 1995. It was produced by Dan Swano & Blackheim, and mixed by Dan Swano (familiar for his work with Opeth, Dissection, Marduk, etc) This debut album was the start of a long and successful career for Blackheim with Diabolical Masquerade. It certainly stirred great excitement within me for what was to come on subsequent albums. I’ve always enjoyed one-man projects greatly, as it’s always interesting to see the uniform influence of one person with singular ideas for each instrument. There is never conflict of composition, and often the musical result is organic and tight. Blackheim is no different, showing immense talent on “Ravendusk…” and proving his worth as a black metal composer, with some help from Dan Swano. This album looks great on paper, being a debut from a one-man side project of Katatonia. I harbored great expectations for Diabolical Masquerade, and for “Ravendusk in my Heart” in particular, I was sure Blackheim would show his steel by writing some good music. He did not disappoint. This is an ice-cold chunk of black metal, showcasing much versatility in songwriting. Although it is a blueprint for all we know black metal to be, this album is very unique, and distinctive in its own style. Nothing else sounds like Diabolical Masquerade, which is quite an achievement considering the vast amount of BM artists out there. “Ravendusk in my Heart” shows much experimentation. Clearly Blackheim was still crafting the sound of Diabolical Masquerade, still building on what would become DM as we know it today. That makes for a very curious listening experience here. All the songs are different, both in structure and in general feel. There is even a short instrumental interlude with melodic clean guitarwork. The songs never feel formulaic, each one is an idea all on its own, not merely a continuation or a filler. The standout component of the excellent songwriting is the guitars, coldly channeling black metal elements from the immortal tremolo riff to clean, atmospheric interludes. At times, the guitar work is fast and aggressive, but mostly it leans in favor of atmospheric BM. The slower riffs are the memorable ones here, with decent melodies dark enough to feel at home with the cold production. The distortion is thin, and the cleans are rich and warm, distinctly black metal. However, Blackheim incorporated death, thrash and even doom metal elements when writing the guitars on “Ravendusk…”. The drums sound very thin and cold, somewhat distant from the other instruments. The drums weren’t written to stand out here, typical blastbeats and double-times drive most of the album. The only instrument that really stands out is the guitaring, but this isn’t an album made to impress with musical prowess. All the instruments blend together instead of standing out, this album is all about atmosphere. It is very dark, and yet paradoxically melodic at times, rising and falling incessantly. The album never drags or becomes monotonous, the constant change of the innovative composition keeps you listening compulsively. This is, however, a very unique atmospheric album in terms of mood. The album as a whole feels very desolate, very solitary. I find myself enjoying “Ravendusk…” most when listening alone. The atmosphere is somewhat depressing at times, and without attentive listening, much of the depth is lost. The experience is different in solitude, for you are most receptive when you are alone, picking up all the nuances adding to the personal feel of the album, as Blackheim intended. This is an album meant to be a private experience, just as creating it was for Blackheim. This is possibly Diabolical Masquerade’s best album, with diversity in all songs and incredible mood. Edycja na CD w digipacku z załączoną mapą podróży i innymi niespodziankami. The latest album “Podróż” is intended to be a project that brings together music and words. And the journey itself has three dimensions. And there are three times as many side plots. Attentive listeners will understand what and how… A dozen or so people revealed their talents on the album, all in order to get closer to the absolute that it is a wall of sound generated by a passing passenger car. After all, this is an album that contains many references and a wide range of inspirations. OPOWIEŚĆ (A Story) is a group whose music is filled with noises, squeaks, clatters and other characteristic sounds for the trance motor skills of a moving train. On one website, the band’s work was described as NOISE RITUAL SPLEEN SONGS. And what’s not to understand? The group has released two albums. The debut “Opowieść” (2021) is an album in the dreamlike manner radio play. The second album is not even so much a record as a handmade art zine with an attached a recording of the band’s concert during the 11th edition of the Zabobony festival. And the Tale performs not very well often, but in special places. The musicians could be heard both in the rooms of a Lower Silesian former German pigsty, as well as in the walls of a Czech one, neo-Gothic church. This is proof of skillful and graceful maneuvering between the sacred and profane areas. The band’s performances take the form of a musical ritualenriched with film projections and a visual performance in the form of live painting. Everything is there stories.
