...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...



..::OPIS::..

Debiutancki album doskonałej progresywnej formacji z Włoch (dwóch Włochów i dwóch Anglików). Angielski wokal, mnóstwo przesterowanych organów Hammonda i wciąż wyczuwalny mocno psychodeliczny nastrój z końca lat 60-tych.



„We Włoszech w latach 1971–1974 rockowe zespoły rzucały sobie wyzwania. Ten kto miał największą wyobraźnię mógł stworzyć epokowy, ponadczasowy album. W tym czasie wszyscy byliśmy muzycznymi malarzami i rzeźbiarzami, jak w renesansowych Włoszech”. (Tom Hayes/Gnosis)

Powszechnie wiadomo, że włoski rock progresywny pierwsze kroki stawiał w 1970 roku. Jego afirmacja w alternatywnym obiegu nie była jednak natychmiastowa: w istocie aż do drugiej połowy 1972 roku wiele zespołów nadal tworzyło dzieła zawieszone pomiędzy beatowo-psychodeliczną przeszłością, a jeszcze mglistą prog rockową przyszłością. Tak było między innymi w przypadku Analogy, Circus 2000, a także w przypadku debiutanckiej płyty grupy THE TRIP, wspaniałego międzynarodowego zespołu, który swoim brzmieniem z impetem otworzył drzwi nowej ery dając początek włoskiemu prog rockowi.

Powstali w Anglii w 1966 roku pod nazwą TheTrips w składzie którego znaleźli się basista Arvid „Wegg” Andersen, dwóch gitarzystów: Bill Gray (grał już z Claptonem ) i młodziutki Ritchie Blackmore (tak, TEN Blackmore!), oraz perkusista Ian Broad. W poszukiwaniu sławy i pieniędzy cała czwórka przeniosła się rok później do Włoch. W Turynie wpadli w oko wschodzącej gwieździe muzyki pop Rikiemu Maiocchi’emu. Piosenkarz właśnie pożegnał się ze swoją macierzystą grupą I Cameleonti i zaprosił ich, by wspierali go w dwumiesięcznej trasie po Italii, po odbyciu której w ciągu kilku tygodni przeszli transformację. Z zespołu jako pierwszy wyłamał się Blackmore, który wrócił do Anglii i założył Deep Purple. Tuż po nim odszedł Ian Broad mający problemy z alkoholem. W ich miejsce pojawili się dwaj włoscy muzycy: klawiszowiec z Savony, Joe Vescovi i perkusista Pino Sinnone (ex-Teste Dure i Rogers).

Nowo powstały kwartet po zmianie nazwy na The Trip zaczął tworzyć oryginalny repertuar. Początkowo opierał się on na blues rocku szybko ewoluując w oryginalne brzmienie z niespotykanym dotąd użyciem efektownych parti chóralnych, cytatów z klasyki, starych pieśni mieszanych z kakofonią dźwięków i wspaniałych galopów instrumentów klawiszowych z organami Hammonda na czele. W 1969 roku, po wiosennych koncertach w historycznym Piper Club w Rzymie, wówczas niekwestionowanej świątyni wielu krajowych i zagranicznych zespołów psychodelicznych i progresywnych, zostali zauważeni przez Alberigo Croccetę, który doprowadził do tego, że jeden z ich utworów, „Bolero Blues” znalazł się na składankowej płycie „Piper 2000” wydanej w tym samym roku. On też podpisał z nimi kontrakt z RCA i zmaterializował koncert na „włoskim Woodstocku”, Festival di Caracalla, który odbył się na terenie rzymskich Łaźni Karakalli w 1970 roku. Mniej więcej w tym samym czasie pokazali się w filmowej komedii „Terzo Canale. Avventura a Montecarlo” opowiadająca o tarapatach zespołu próbującego dostać się do Monte Carlo ostatecznie lądującego na wspomnianym festiwalu. Innymi słowy droga do sukcesu stała przed nimi otworem. Do pełni szczęścia brakowało płytowego debiutu, który ostatecznie ukazał się w maju 1970 roku.

Album, zatytułowany „The Trip” pojawił się na półkach włoskich sklepów jako coś nietypowego i już przy pierwszym przesłuchaniu było jasne, że chęć innowacji kreatywnością chciała przezwyciężyć technologiczne ograniczenia tamtych czasów. Od pierwszego utworu „Prologo” Vescovi, który nie posiadał syntezatora w zakresie efektów specjalnych robi co może, by je wyczarować. Zresztą w notatce na odwrocie muzycy jasno dali do zrozumienia, że wszystkie dźwięki są wynikiem przesterowań i eksperymentów nagranych na konwencjonalnych instrumentach, a nie na sztuczkach studyjnych. Pomimo dominacji klawiszy, atmosfera jest jednak zróżnicowana. Umiejętności techniczne nie podlegają dyskusji i kiedy wchodzimy w „Incubi” delektujemy się niezwykłymi walorami wokalnymi godnymi zespołu bluesowego przeniesionymi w prog rockową, by nie powiedzieć kosmiczną, sferę. A tak przy okazji – teksty (poza jednym wyjątkiem) śpiewane są po angielsku. Ówcześni krytycy czasami zwracali uwagę na niewielki rozdźwięk między partiami chóru, a instrumentalnymi liniami, ale nie było to wielkie uchybienie. Wręcz przeciwnie. Końcowy wynik był tak oryginalny, że sama wytwórnia ochrzciła ich brzmienie „impresjonistycznym” nieoficjalnie nadając płycie drugie imię, „Musica Impressionistica”, które pojawiło się na tylnej okładce. Mając taką nazwę i taki tytuł, łatwo sobie wyobrazić, że muzycy zabiorą nas na wycieczkę, a raczej w niezwykłą podróż szlakiem wczesnych nagrań Pink Floyd. Na tym albumie The Trip jedną nogą mocno stał w psychodelii z okresu „The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn”, drugą (jeszcze niepewnie) stawiał już w progresywnym „A Saucerful Of Secrets”.

Otwierający utwór „Prologo” (Prolog) jest niezwykłym i bardzo ciekawym pasażem instrumentalnym spod znaku demonicznej psychodelii lat 60-tych z mrocznymi fragmentami organów przechodzącym przez drzwi percepcyjnego rytmu, by na końcu dojść do prawdziwej deklaracji – miłości do bluesa. Ależ to mocny punkt tej płyty! Po ponad ośmiu niezwykłych minutach jego miejsce zajmuje „Incubi” (Koszmary) równie długa psychodeliczna kompozycja z echami muzyki klasycznej i jazzowymi organami. Enigmatyczny tekst opowiada o koszmarnej, niespokojnej nocy nawiedzonej przez upiorne wizje, które rozgonić może jedynie poranne słońce. Tak kończy się pierwsza strona oryginalnej płyty.

Drugą otwiera długi, apokaliptyczny „Visioni dell’aldilà” (Wizje z życia pozagrobowego) i podobnie jak poprzedni, mimo włoskiego tytułu śpiewany jest po angielsku. Według Pino Sinnone, został on zainspirowany niektórymi obrazami Hieronima Boscha i łączy w sobie ciemne pasaże organowe, harmonijne wokale z kolorowymi impresjonistycznymi tekstami, zaś ogniste instrumentalne wzloty symbolizują dziką i wolną duszę. Zmieniające się motywy fundują nam niezatarte przeżycie. Jaka jazda! Muzyczny klimat zmienia się w „Riflessioni” (Refleksje), w którym rock, blues i muzyka gospel łączy się w jedną zgrabną całość. Na tym tle dostajemy dość poważny tekst traktujący o religii, przemijaniu czasu i tajemnicy życia. Za to na koniec zespół funduje nam kompletną niespodziankę. Surrealistyczny, żywy „Una pietra colorata” (Kolorowy kamień) to tak naprawdę urocza i zabawna pop psychodeliczna piosenka. To jedyny kawałek zaśpiewany po włosku, który początkowo nie był brany pod uwagę. Jego pierwotna wersja z angielskim tekstem i tytułem „Take Me” szykowana była jako strona „B” singla. Jednak z uwagi na to, że RCA wydawał ten album we Włoszech zgodnie z tutejszym prawem na płycie musiało znajdować się choć jedno nagranie śpiewany po włosku. Tekst, który przetłumaczył Pino Sinnone, przywołuje obraz samotnego, gadającego kolorowego kamienia leżącego na dnie morza zakochującego się w leżącym tuż obok innym kamyku. Banalna, by nie powiedzieć dziecinna historyjka z uroczą melodią.

Pomimo, że nie był wspierany odpowiednią reklamą, ani też nie osiągnął ekscytującej sprzedaży, album wypracował zespołowi solidną niszę w mediach, które od tego momentu nie spuszczały go z oka. Dumni z tak dużego zainteresowania podtrzymali kuszące artystyczne obietnice debiutu oddalając się coraz bardziej od psychodelicznego nurtu. Obierając kurs na rock progresywny w kolejnych swych dziełach, „Caronte” (1971), „Atlantide” (1972) i „Time Of Change” (1973) stali się prawdziwą ikoną tamtejszego prog rocka. Niestety, zmiany personalne (ostatnią płytę nagrali w trójkę z nowym perkusistą, Furio Chirico, który potem założył doskonały Arti & Mestieri), kłótnie i rozbieżne zdania co do dalszej działalności doprowadziły do zawieszenia działalności. Pod koniec 1974 roku wypadek Andersena, który doznał groźnej kontuzji przypieczętował ostateczny rozpad grupy. W XXI wieku różni muzycy z oryginalnego składu (i nie tylko) kilka razy próbowali zreformować The Trip, ale jak mawiał Heraklit z Efezu „nie wchodzi się dwa razy do tej samej rzeki.”

Płyta była wiele razy wznawiana zarówno na winylu jak i na CD. Moja kompaktowa, zremasterowana i limitowana reedycja wydana przez RCA i Sony Music pochodzi z 2011 roku. Brzmi bosko! Mam też nieoficjalny egzemplarz z arcyciekawymi nagraniami bonusowymi. Co prawda omijam szerokim łukiem takie wydawnictwa, ale tym razem dałem się skusić, tym bardziej, że jak dotąd żadne z oficjalnych wznowień bonusów nie ma. A tu proszę, jest singiel „Fantasia”/”Travelin’ Soul” z nagraniami ze ścieżki dźwiękowej filmu „Terzo canale”, „Bolero Blues” z kompilacyjne płyty „Piper 2000” z 1969 roku, stronę „A” singla „Believe In Yourself” promującego album „Caronte” (1971), oraz sensacyjny(!) blisko półgodzinny zapis koncertu z rzymskiego klubu Piper ze stycznia 1972 roku z fantastycznymi wersjami „Caronte I” i „Two Brothers” trwające razem trzynaście minut, powalającym, jedenastominutowym „L’Utima Ora E Ode A J. Hendrix” i kończący występ, znakomicie zagrane „Repent Walpurgis”.

Na zakończenie dwa małe Post Scriptum. Pierwsze dotyczy tytułu wpisu. Pierwotnie tekst miał się nazywać: „Kamień milowy włoskiego progresu”, ale wydał mi się zbyt pretensjonalny. Postawiłem na „Prekursorzy włoskiego prog rocka” będąc w pełni świadom, że mogę narazić się niektórym fanom gatunku albowiem według poważnych znawców tematu za prekursorów tego stylu uważa się grupę Le Orme i jej album „Collage” z 1971 roku… Drugie Post Scriptum jest innej natury. Wymienione przeze mnie wyżej dwie kolejne płyty The Trip wydane po debiucie opisałem w marcu 2016 roku pod tytułem „Rockowa włoszczyzna”, zaś historię zespołu Arti & Mestieri i jego płytę „Tilt” trzy miesiące później. Proszę szukać w dziale „Archiwum bloga”, lub w wyszukiwarce. Tam znajdują się także inne, bardzo ciekawe pozycje spod obcasa włoskiego buta.

Włoski zespół the Trip został założony w 1966 roku w... Londynie. Dlaczego? Bo powstał jako grupa towarzysząca Riki'emu Maiocchi. Bardzo szybko zrezygnowali z tego 'towarzyszenia' i rozpoczęli samodzielną wycieczkę przez zawiłe meandry świata muzyki. W składzie byli zarówno Włosi jak i Anglicy. Ciekawostką dość dużego kalibru jest pierwotny skład grupy - pierwszym gitarzystą był Ritchie Blackmore! Tak, to TEN Ritchie, podpora Deep Purple przez dłuuuugie lata...

I następna ciekawostka - wyleciał ze składu bo był za słaby.... Zastąpił go William Billy Gray - naprawdę doskonały gitarzysta, posiadający klasyczne wykształcenie.

Pod koniec 1969 roku grupa zarejestrowała swój pierwszy album zatytułowany po prostu 'the Trip'. Płyta ukazała się na początku 1970 roku wydana przez włoski oddział RCA. Dźwięki które tworzył zespół wywołał przerażenie w kierownictwie wytwórni, mimo to zdecydowali się jednak na wydanie tej płyty, aczkolwiek umieścili na okładce ostrzeżenie i informacje że 'wszystko co słyszycie jest stworzone za pomocą gitary, basu Hammonda i perkusji'. Dziś to już nikogo ani nie dziwi, ani nie zaskakuje, ale na tamte lata publiczność przyzwyczajoną do grzecznych piosenek musiało szokować...

Oryginalny winyl z tym ostrzeżeniem jest wart około 1000 euro. Materiał na płycie przełamał pewną barierę na włoskiej scenie muzycznej i stał się drogowskazem dla licznych młodych zespołów chcących zerwać z obowiązkową wówczas formą muzyczki lekkiej i prostej... Trip po czterdziestu latach brzmi świeżo, a niektóre fragmenty to niemal współczesny progres. Muzyka zawarta na pierwszej płycie grupy to wybuchowa mieszanka doskonałego rocka z elementami hard i bluesa, wczesnego progresu i elementów postpsychodelicznych.
Na pierwszy plan wysuwają się naprawdę znakomite klawisze i doskonała gitara. Te klawisze (Joe Bishop) to również eksperymenty dźwiękowe (te, które tak zszokowały ówczesną publikę), ale również wspaniałe solówki i pasaże. Już w pierwszym utworze otwierającym płytę gość pokazał, że rozróżnia czarne klawisze od białych i na dodatek wie co z nimi zrobić...

A dalej? Kapitalna gra, świetne solówki i dialogi z 'drugim Wielkim' - Williamem, na gitarze. Razem stworzyli doskonały duet, który stał się wzorem dla setek młodych grup. Gitara brzmi fragmentami niemal współcześnie, zachwyca barwą, nie mówiąc o technice. Po drugim przesłuchaniu już mnie nie dziwił fakt rezygnacji z usług Blackmore'a. Grupa jest zaliczana do absolutnej czołówki włoskiej sceny rockowej, a ich debiut do najważniejszych płyt na tej scenie. Zdecydowanie polecam wszystkim fanom staroci, natomiast czystym progresowym proponowałbym rozpoczęcie przygody z Trip'em od późniejszych płyt...

Zremasterowana, szwedzka, znacznie lepiej brzmiąca i co najważniejsze - rozszerzona o nagrania singlowe oraz sesje radiowe BBC, edycja genialnego, niestety jedynego albumu brytyjskiej (a raczej międzynarodowej) folk-psych-progresywnej formacji - nagranego w Londynie w 1968 roku i wydanego przez Elektrę (wytwórnię The Doors i Love).

Ten bardzo niegdyś niedoceniony album wypełniała bardzo plastyczna, totalnie czarująca i cudownie zaaranżowana muzyka, uwodząca subtelną melodyką, zgrabnymi (damsko-męskimi) partiami wokalnymi i niepowtarzalnym, późnopsychodelicznym nastrojem. Całość przypomina najlepsze momenty It's A Beautiful Day, Jefferson Airplane i Fairport Convention, choć brzmienie chwilami było jeszcze bardziej soczyste.

W porównaniu z bardzo przytłumionym, wcześniejszym, amerykańskim CD ta edycja brzmi po prostu genialnie. Natomiast bonusy są wręcz fantastyczne (zwłaszcza cudowny "Mark Time"), zaś singlowe wersje mono są dynamiczniejsze niż miksy stereo z płyty!
