Sześć utworów brutalnego death metalu z Poznania. Dla fanów PUTRID PILE, MORTICIAN!


'Supreme Art of Extermination' to trzecie wydawnictwo jednoosobowego brutal death metalowego projektu, które wpadło w moje ręce jeszcze w ubiegłym roku.
Mam wrażenie, że w stosunku do poprzednich płyt, w muzykę MASTECTOMY wkradło się nieco więcej przestrzeni. Na szczęście nie idzie śladem ostatniej płyty PATHOLOGY i nie ma tu żadnego melodyjnego pitolenia ani rozlewającej się słodyczy.

Ciosy zadawane są miarowo i z wyczuciem, mordercza i bezduszna mechanika selektywnych riffów, została zgrabnie urozmaicona samplami, rwanymi zwolnieniami i porywającą rytmiką. Nie ma tu żadnej technicznej ekwilibrystyki ani zaskakujących pomysłów próbujących przełamywać ramy gatunku.

MASTECTOMY stawia na dosadność i prostotę, nie goni brutal death metalowego peletonu. Jest w większym stopniu gatunkowym hołdem i wyrazem fascynacji obraną konwencją – szczerym i udanym, jak się wydaje o coraz większym potencjale.

Warto zwrócić uwagę, tym bardziej, że na naszym rodzimym podwórku takiego grania jest jak na lekarstwo. W ogóle mam wrażenie, że brutal death metal jest w Polsce największą podgatunkową niszą i nawet najbardziej topowi reprezentanci takiego grania mało kogo interesują.

Mastectomy jest jednoosobowym projektem Adama Nowaka, w którego twórczym słowniku brak terminu „kompromis”. Nawet gdy udaje się w kanonach brutal death metalowego grania zaproponować coś chwytliwego (no, na ile się da…), to jednak nie będzie to nigdy propozycja dla mas. Bardzo chwaliłem na łamach Kvltu Worst Kind of Human – wydany w 2020 album wydawał mi się nie odbiegać bardzo od propozycji tuzów podobnego grania. Może to była ocena na wyrost, ale jednak kompozycyjna i tekstowa bezczelność poparta była siłą nośnych riffów i wystarczyła do wywołania skoku adrenaliny.

Mam wrażenie, że zeszłoroczna EP Supreme Art of Extermination nie przebija poprzednika. Zdaje się być mniej wyrazista, ale jednocześnie niesie pewne drobne próby odświeżenia stylu. Całość brzmi nieco bardziej mechanicznie, jakby riffy podszyte były odrobiną zdehumanizowanego, nieco industrialnego charakteru. Nawet jeśli nie takie było zamierzenie, to takie podejście czai się gdzieś w tle kompozycji. Przede wszystkim mamy tu jednak do czynienia z soczystym, wyzbytym ozdobników death metalem, znajdującym się w pół drogi między klasyką a nowocześniejszym podejściem.

Nowak nie zasypuje nas setkami pomysłów i szczególną wirtuozerią, ale zręcznie żongluje elementarnymi środkami dla tego typu grania. Zmieniają się w poszczególnych kompozycjach motywy i tempa: nieprzesadnie szybkie, zwalniające, ale nie do ekstremalnie wolnych rejestrów. Skala dynamiki wystarcza jednak, by nie nudzić, choć też nie rzuca nami o ścianę raz po raz. Produkcja jest klarowna, stawiająca na ciężar, ale czasem gubi się czytelność wokalu i nawet jeśli teksty są po polsku, to niewiele z nich wyłapiemy. Takie jednak mogło być zamierzenie.

W lirykach, podobnie jak w muzyce, postawiono na prostotę i szczerość. Mastectomy odrzuca fantastyczno-demoniczno-diabelską otoczkę, szukając źródeł zła w nas samych. Polityka, patologie, przemoc – proza życia, chciałoby się rzec. Utwory, do których najlepiej smakuje seta wódki (niekoniecznie schłodzonej, by się dobrze skrzywi) i kawał salcesonu – to właściwie komplement. A dla Adama brawa za konsekwencję. Podziw zawsze dla tych, którym jeszcze chce się dłubać przy tego typu projektach.

Deep Purple inspirowali się wszyscy — od Queen, Aerosmith i Van Halen po Metallikę, Motörhead i Iron Maiden. Albumy grupy takie jak "In Rock", "Machine Head", "Burn" czy "Fireball" na stałe zapisały się złotymi zgłoskami w kanonie rocka. Mimo upływu lat grupa nie zamierza usuwać się w cień i nie rozstaje się ze sceną ani studiem nagraniowym. Nowa płyta "=1" udowadnia, że muzykom nie brakuje pomysłów i wigoru, a ostatnia zmiana gitarzysty przyniosła odświeżający efekt.

Zapytany w 2014 r. w wywiadzie dla magazynu "Rolling Stone" o zarzuty jurorów Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, że Deep Purple jest "zespołem jednego przeboju" wokalista i frontman grupy Ian Gillan odparł, że nie ma pojęcia, czy chodzi o "Hush", "Smoke on the Water", "Child in Time", "Highway Star" czy może "Perfect Strangers". Nie da się lepiej opisać wpływu brytyjskiej grupy rockowej na muzykę na całym świecie. W piątek ukazał się nowy album Deep Purple zatytułowany "=1".


Album otwierają dynamiczne akordy utworu "Show Me", którym towarzyszą pokrzykiwania Iana Gillana. Po drugim refrenie możemy usłyszeć niezwykłą klawiszowo-gitarową wymianę między Donem Aireyem a Simonem McBride'em. Na koniec obie solówki łączą się w jedną, arpeggiową całość, co stanowi wspaniałe zwieńczenie kawałka.

Następny utwór "A Bit on the Side" opowiada o trudach odnalezienia się w nowym środowisku przez kobietę imieniem Charlene. Uwagę zwracają zwłaszcza rytmiczna kompozycja oraz gitarowa solówka, które może sprawiać wrażenie chaotycznej, ale jest bardzo dobrze przemyślana.

Agresywny zaśpiew Iana Gillana w kawałku "Sharp Shooter" może przypominać klasyczne kompozycje zespołu. Interesujące rozszerzenie brzmienia stanowią także syntetyzatory.

"Portable Door" to pierwszy singiel z płyty "=1", który światło dzienne ujrzał 30 kwietnia. Już sam otwierający riff natychmiast przywodzi na myśl "Pictures of Home" ze słynnej płyty "Machine Head". Chwytliwe klawiszowe slide'y Dona Aireya tylko dopełniają tego wrażenia.

W utworze "Old-Fangled Thing" wokalista porusza kwestię procesu twórczego i współpracy z innymi muzykami. "Jesteś tak spokojny, a ja jestem żywym wrakiem/ Melodia jest gorąca, a przesłanie tak słodkie" — melorecytuje Ian Gillan, by na koniec utworu popisać się wysokim zaśpiewem, nawiązującym do swoich wokalnych dokonań z solowej płyty "Mr. Universe".

"If I Were You" to wolniejszy kawałek o niemal balladowym charakterze, opowiadający o trudach przebaczenia. Uwagę zwraca nietypowy i relatywnie odświeżający break z nałożonymi na siebie ścieżkami wokalnymi.

W drugim singlu z albumu, czyli utworze "Pictures of You", słychać natomiast ponownie klasyczne rockowe patenty Deep Purple. Melodyjny refren może się podobać, a cały kawałek zamyka nietypowa klawiszowa coda z dodatkowymi instrumentami smyczkowymi.

Kompozycja "I'm Saying Nothin'" rozpoczyna się od zdecydowanego okrzyku Iana Gillana. Wokalista na tym jednak się nie zatrzymuje i utrzymuje agresywny ton. Utwór buduje mocny gitarowy riff i podejście do solówki prawie żywcem wyjęte z "Crosstown Traffic" Jimmy'ego Hendrixa.

W kawałku "Lazy Sod", czyli trzecim i ostatnim singlu z krążka "=1", słychać wyraźne nawiązania do "Strange Kind of Woman" i dziedzictwa płyty "In Rock". Utwór stanowi pewnego rodzaju autobiograficzną refleksję Iana Gillana nad własną twórczością. Wokalista z nutą ironii opisuje w nim siebie jako "leniwego głupka". Określenia tego miała w żartobliwym tonie użyć niegdyś menedżerka muzyka, wskazując, że jest autorem tylko nieco ponad 500 kompozycji, a przecież amerykańska piosenkarka Dolly Parton ma na swoim koncie 5 tys. utworów.

W "Now You're Talkin'" na ogromne uznanie zasługuje popis wokalny Iana Gillana w pierwszej zwrotce, który budzi skojarzenia ze śpiewem nieżyjącego Bona Scotta z AC/DC czy Bruce'a Dickinsona z Iron Maiden. Z kolei Don Airey wraca w tym utworze do korzeni: słychać wyraźne nawiązania do nagranej przez klawiszowca z zespołem Rainbow w 1979 r. płyty "Down to Earth" i chociażby utworu "Eyes of the World". W kawałku usłyszeć można także nietypowe przejścia na syntetyzatorach. Wszystko to składa się na najlepszą kompozycję na płycie.

Piosenka "No Money to Burn" opowiada o przyjemnościach życia doczesnego. Krótkie i treściwe wersy połączone z licznymi arpeggiami w solówce stanowią interesującą przygrywkę przed dwoma finałowymi kawałkami.

"I'll Catch You" to ballada o poszukiwaniu bliskości z rozdzierającą serce gitarową solówką Simona McBride'a, mogącą budzić skojarzenia z najlepszymi kompozycjami Alvina Lee. "Matka Natura wciąż ma skarpetki na stopach/ Ojciec Czas się spóźni/ Statki mijają się po cichu w nocy/ A nasza miłość będzie musiała poczekać" — śpiewa wzruszonym tonem Ian Gillan.

Ostatnia piosenka "Bleeding Obvious" to hardrockowa refleksja nad uniwersalnością życiowych prawd i doświadczeń. Utwór buduje ostry gitarowy riff, ale nieco niezrozumiałe wydają się niektóre rozwiązania instrumentalne jak choćby dzwonki po pierwszej zwrotce czy odstający od reszty piosenki i budzący niepokój instrumentalny break.

Ian Gillan podkreśla w utworze, że w dzisiejszym świecie pewne oczywistości są często ignorowane lub pomijane i dodaje, że choć każdy może mieć inne perspektywy i doświadczenia, to w praktyce dąży do podobnych celów i dochodzi do podobnych wniosków ("To cholernie oczywiste/ Kiedy próbujesz powiedzieć coś, co jest/ Takie samo, jak u wszystkich innych/ W zupełnie odmienny sposób"). Wokalista wskazuje także, że wszelkie ludzkie przeżycia i doświadczenia "składają się na jedną całość" (ang. "it all adds up to one"), co stanowi wyjaśnienie nazwy albumu.

Nowy album Deep Purple obfituje w charakterystyczne patenty zespołu. Dobrze obrazuje to dobór singli — dział promocji postawił na trzy utwory najmniej odbiegające brzmieniem od klasycznego stylu grupy. Choć w głosie Iana Gillana słychać upływ czasu, jego śpiew jest stanowczy i przekonujący, a miejscami — godny podziwu. Widać także, że muzykom nie brakuje wigoru, a zmiana gitarzysty przyniosła odświeżający efekt.

Album "=1" z pewnością nie jest płytą pokroju "In Rock", "Machine Head", "Burn" czy "Fireball". Teksty na płycie są także zdecydowanie mniej ambitne niż na albumach w ostatnich latach (jak choćby na płytach "Rapture of the Deep" czy "Now What?!"). Nie przeszkadza to jednak ani trochę w odbiorze muzyki.

Na krążku znaleźć można znakomite muzyczne pomysły i melodie, które z łatwością zapadają w pamięć. Jak zwykle w przypadku Deep Purple, mocne gitarowe riffy oraz klawiszowe popisy stanowią niepodrabialny znak firmowy zespołu.

Choć tytuł albumu stanowi filozoficzne przesłanie, można utożsamiać go także z pozycją zespołu scenie światowej muzyki rockowej. Członkom legendarnej grupy nie przeszkadzają ani ostatnia wymiana gitarzysty, ani zaawansowany wiek. Krążek "=1" pokazuje, że Deep Purple jak było, tak jest numerem jeden. I nic nie wskazuje na to, żeby w najbliższym czasie miało się to zmienić.

Po raz pierwszy od czasu "Infinite" przesłuchałem w całości cały nowy album Deep Purple. Dałem mu szansę wyłącznie ze względu na nieznaczne odmłodzenie składu. Płyta "=1" (tytuł i okładka znów wyglądają jak sabotaż - patrz "Bananas", "Now What!" czy "Whoosh!") to debiut nowego gitarzysty, zaledwie 45-letniego Simona McBride'a. Jak na muzyka dzisiejszego Deep Purple jest to rzeczywiście młodzieniec - reszta składu zbliża się do osiemdziesiątki - ale dla rockmanów to już ten wiek, kiedy z reguły najlepsze dokonania mają za sobą. McBride nie ma zresztą żadnych znaczących osiągnieć na koncie, ale współpracował z Donem Aireyem, więc dostał fuchę.

Jako następca Steve'a Morse'a, który ze swoim stylem do Deep Purple nigdy specjalnie nie pasował, McBride wypada nienajgorzej. Jego riffy mają odrobinę więcej polotu i trochę bliżej im do klasycznego hard rocka. Jednak solówki wciąż brzmią bardzo technicznie i powtarzają ograne klisze, a brakuje w nich wyobraźni, emocji i feelingu. Ogólnie jednak nowy gitarzysta nieźle się tu odnajduje, a nowy skład, Mark IX, już w tym momencie wydaje się lepiej zgrany, niż obecna koalicja rządząca głosująca nad prawami kobiet.

Jednak dzisiejszy Deep Purple nawet bez topornych riffów Steve'a Morse'a to wciąż Deep Purple tylko bez jednego ze swoich licznych współczesnych problemów. W zespole wciąż jest przecież Ian Gillan, któremu lat nie ubywa. Szczególnie w tych wolniejszych, bardziej stonowanych momentach - gdy nie może się ukryć za ścianą dźwięku - słychać, jak bardzo już niedomaga. Ballada "I'll Catch You" jest tu najlepszym, choć raczej najsmutniejszym przykładem. A z kolei w tych żywszych momentach czasem wyraźnie słychać próby ratowania się studyjnymi sztuczkami. Najbardziej kuriozalny jest jednak wrzask w "Now You're Talkin'". Raz, że fatalnie to wyszło, dwa - sam fakt, że po taki rodzaj ekspresji sięgnął osiemdziesięciolatek budzi moje zażenowanie.

Problemem zespołu wciąż pozostaje też Airey, który po ponad dwudziestu latach wciąż nie ma pomysłu, jak sensownie zastąpić Jona Lorda. Czasem przywołuje tu kojarzone z nim brzmienie organów, jednak głownie używa ich do robienia tła czy dopełniania gitarowych riffów. Solówki najczęściej gra na syntezatorze, który brzmi tu jak tania zabawka z ubiegłego wieku. Nic dobrego nie mogę powiedzieć też o sekcji rytmicznej Glover / Paice, bo obaj starają się grać w sposób jak najmniej inwazyjny, chowając się za pozostałymi muzykami. No i jeszcze ten nieszczęsny Bob Ezrin, którego zespół uparcie zatrudnia jako producenta od czasu "Now What?!", a który wciąż nie ma pojęcia, jak porządnie wyprodukować zespół hardrockowy. Płaskie to takie i suche.

W dodatku czego by nie mówić o albumach z Morse'em, to przynajmniej zdarzały się tam jakieś próby urozmaicenia stylu, a "=1" to już wyłącznie bezpieczne, konformistyczne granie hardrockowe, jakiego od zespołu oczekują fani. Single zapowiadały nawet powrót do stylistyki z czasów pierwszego Mark II - "Portable Door" to prawie "Pictures of Home", a "Lazy Sod" przypomina "Black Night" połączony ze "Strange Kind of Woman" - jednak całości bliżej do płyt z ostatnich czterdziestu lat. Próby urozmaicenia to rock'n'rollowa wstawka w "Now You're Talkin'" i orientalizmy w "Bleeding Obvious" - zgodnie z tytułem ostatniego, oczywista oczywistość. Pod względem kompozycji i aranżacji jest to naprawdę leniwy album. Nie zdziwiłbym się, gdyby te kawałki okazały się odrzutami z wcześniejszych wydawnictw.

Odmłodzenie składu w niczym tu nie pomogło. Deep Purple na "=1" nie ma kompletnie nic do zaoferowania. Przykro się słucha, jak muzycy ugrzęźli w tym dawno wyeksploatowanym stylu, do którego grania potrzeba młodzieńczej energii oraz umiejętności tworzenia bardziej wyrazistych utworów. Oba te atuty Gillan, Glover i Paice stracili przed dziesięcioleciami, a co do Aireya i McBride'a - nie jest pewne, czy kiedykolwiek je mieli. Brzmi to wszystko jak niezamierzona autoparodia, w dodatku kiepska, bo zupełnie nieśmieszna.

Pierwszy raz na CD! Nie do pomyślenia! C.C. to oczywiście klawiszowiec grupy Ten Years After! Jaka szkoda że Alvin Lee nie zamieszczał kompozycji Chicka na albumach TYA!

Autentycznie czarujący album!

Z pewnością muzyce nie zaszkodził niesamowity skład - proszę tylko spojrzeć! M.in. Martin Barre, Cozy Powell, Leo Lyons, Bernie Marsden no i bardzo lubiany przeze mnie wokalista grupy Wild Turkey (występujący niemal we wszystkich kawałkach)! Zresztą, właśnie do dokonań WT (a także Wishbone Ash i ówczesnych Procol Harum) muzyka Churchilla nawiązuje w największym stopniu. Zapewniam, że na wydanym w raczej mało atrakcyjnej okładce LP "You & Me" nie ma żadnych wypełniaczy!
Pewne niedostatki szaty graficznej rekompensuje natomiast doskonała, czysta jakość dźwięku!
