Long considered one of the underground classics of doom metal, this Pennsylvania band’s debut and only album is certainly a weighty and genuinely sinister affair. While not really belonging to the Sabbath school of doom, Dream Death were along with Medieval, Post Mortem and Blood Farmers, part of a school of thought that did not exclude punk snot and venom from the execution of the style. This basically means they have more deliberately rough edges than many in the genre, but also carry an organic feel that rounds out this record greatly. It’s a bit disconcerting at first how some of these songs shift passages one to the other within their frameworks, but after a short while the flow of “Back From The Dead” and “Divine In Agony become apparent. “Hear My Screams” dives in with a chugging pace and wonderfully malevolent (though hardly death metal) vocals from guitarist Brian Lawrence, also featuring a nice drum performance from Mike Smail. And man, listen to the distortion oozing from the guitars on “The Elder Race,” a slow and crawling number with visions of evil monks and Satanic rites dancing in it’s head. This record, despite the fact that far more mature and professional material would come from it’s some of it’s creators in their future guise as Penance, retains a unique aura and one singular to underground US metal of this era. Thus like Cirith Ungol and Brocas Helm, Dream Death are true cult cave dwellers in the shadows of metal’s mainstream presence, too obscure even for many fans who consider their tastes to be subterranean in it’s guise.

Having had a short initial run, the band members eventually found greener pastures in Penance but have also enjoyed their status with a recent reunion. While 2013 would see the release of their sophomore album Somnium Excessum, this 1987 effort is the only full-length from their prime and has proved to be an influential though obscure listen.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Dream Death didn’t really fit into a particular scene in their early days. Their style of doom was more unhinged than Saint Vitus or Pentagram but wasn’t as extreme as the sludge and death/doom that they would help inspire. Instead, they played an odd fusion of doom and thrash metal with Celtic Frost, Slayer, Venom, and the obligatory Black Sabbath as influences.

These cues can be heard in the riffs and muddy production job, but the vocals are where it stands out the most. Clearly inspired by Tom G Warrior with some Tom Araya inflections here and there, guitarist/vocalist Brian Lawrence has a harsh bark with an almost spoken word approach. It can run the risk of sounding bland but it definitely fits the filthy atmosphere in a way that a standard death grunt just couldn’t.

The songwriting is also diverse and covers the doom to thrash spectrum, oftentimes in the same song. The opening “Back From The Dead” and “Dream Death” show more thrash, “The Elder Race” and “Sealed In Blood” offer the most doom, and other like “Bitterness & Hatred” and “Divine In Agony” are a little harder to predict. The results are a mixed bag as four songs are pretty much perfect and the others range from great to somewhat directionless.

A couple lesser songs bring it down a notch, but Journey Into Mystery should be seen as a classic doom release. While there are more influential efforts from this period, its uniqueness makes it worth checking out and it definitely grows on you with repeated listens. And since the band has put out a solid comeback, I suppose we can finally stop wondering what could’ve been.

Yfel 1710 powstał pięć lat temu, i debiutował pod banderą Malignant Voices „Willą Wisielców”. Potem był „Zlatują Się Ćmy” dla Pagan Records. „Black Metal Gnosis” to pełniak numer trzy, który to ukazał się dosłownie chwilę temu, wydany tym razem pod skrzydłami Societas. Był zatem czas, by z zespołem się zapoznać, tym bardziej, że każdy z wymienionych albumów przeplatany był splitem, zatem przekonany jestem, iż nazwa ta znana jest każdemu szanującemu się maniakowi krajowego black metalu. Można powiedzieć, że Yfel 1710 ukształtowali na scenie swoją pozycję, a nowe nagrania jeszcze bardziej ją ugruntowują. Bo zespół nie bawi się w eksperymenty, i od początku podąża ściśle obraną ścieżką, nawet jeśli poszczególne wydawnictwa minimalnie różnią się od sobą.

O „Black Metal Gnosis” można na przykład powiedzieć, że jest, przynajmniej statystycznie, nieco wolniejsza i bardziej nastawiona na klimat niż lodową zamieć. Nie jest to jednak zmiana ani drastyczna, ani zawierająca jakieś niespotykane dotychczas rozwiązania. Ot, mieszanka oparta głównie na norweskim graniu z okresu drugiej fali, zawierająca zarówno fragmenty blastujące, melodyjne tremolo, wolniejsze, nastrojowe kostkowanie jak i momenty atmosferyczne. Wszystko brzmiące oczywiście bardzo klasycznie, z wysoko strojonymi, bzyczącymi gitarami, z odpowiednią ilością szronu na strunach. W tym skandynawskim kurwidołku najwyraźniejszym polskim akcentem są oczywiście wokale, poza pierwszym kawałkiem, śpiewane po naszemu. Według mnie, element ten wyjątkowo do twórczości Yfel 1710 pasuje, bo, po pierwsze, czyni zespół natychmiast rozpoznawalnym, a po drugie, teksty Klimortha mają swój niepowtarzalny, charakterystyczny klimat, który mi bardzo odpowiada. Tak samo jak odpowiadają mi lekkie ucieczki muzyczne zespoły w kierunku klasyków lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Poprzednio, zazwyczaj Darkthrone. Na nowym albumie, Carpathian Forest, sami pewnie zauważycie w którym kawałku. No ale zbierając myśli do kupy… Panowie nagrali kolejny album blackmetalowy, który jest bardzo silną cegiełką krajowej sceny. Żaden kandydat do płyty roku, ale jednocześnie album, który ma swoją niezaprzeczalną wartość i jakość. Takich nagrań jak najwięcej. Mi się podoba.

Released in September 2025 by Societas Oculorum Arcanorum, the album comes with 40 minutes of pure and nasty evilness and delivers a raw, uncompromising sound that without a doubt pays homage to the second wave of black metal. Of course this does not sound overly creative but with quality stompers like “Witchcraft Commandment” and “Diabelskie Pakty”, the band crafts a sonic landscape that is both aggressive and atmospheric and should be of interest for most genre aficionados.

The album’s themes seem to involve topics like spiritual decay, plague, and societal collapse, although it is hard to tell for me with the lyrics being in Polish. One of the standout tracks, “Nemezis”, draws lyrical inspiration from the mighty old H.P. Lovecraft, adding a layer of cosmic horror to the otherwise more earthbound narrative. This fusion of historical and literary elements gives the album a unique conceptual depth that sets it apart from more conventional black metal releases. In case you are interested not only in the brutal sonic assaults but love a complete package with intense atmosphere you came to the right place.

Musically, Yfel1710 attacks with a pretty traditional black metal approach, skipping most of the modern developments often found in recently hyped works in favor of cold riffs, venomous vocals, and relentless drumming. The band lineup—namely Klimorh (vocals/guitar), Góral (bass), Bocian (drums), and Szakal (guitar)—delivers a tight and technically profound performance while torturing their instruments. The production is quite raw but dynamic enough to my ears, enhancing the grim atmosphere and aligning with the genre’s ethos.

Showcasing their uncompromising aggression and experience when it comes to crafting truly remarkable cuts in every riff and through maniacal vocals, with their dark lyrics and perfect execution of every chord, Yfel1710 do not waste a lot of time. A wall of sounds, an abundance of sensations, an avalanche of blows and all this driven forward by the all-powerful, strong vocal work awaits you once the album has started. The songwriting is cleverly paced with the music following ups and downs, with more chaotic and some laid-back parts complementing each other effortlessly. The final product is coherent, melodic, with an idea and vision how this kind of music must be constructed to stay true to the origins but sound modern enough to be fully enjoyed. Yfel1710 somehow manage to combine traditional Norwegian grimness with the groovy and sometimes punky vibe of bands like Craft to enhance the Polish trademark elements.

The album comes with striking artwork kept in black and white and a noble 16-page booklet which is included in the CD edition. These elements reinforce the album’s conceptual ideas and offer fans a deeper immersion into its world. So in case you are a collector getting one of these beautiful shining discs is highly recommended. “Black Metal Gnosis” is a powerful statement from Yfel1710—an album that has zero interest in reinventing black metal but rather to play to its core values and combine it with regional history and pure darkness. Drugi album AZARATH. Nieludzkie tempa, miażdżace riffy, przerażajaco ciężkie brzmienie i Szatan ryczący z tekstów, łacza się z iście mistrzowska precyzja wykonania. "Infernal Blasting" to jedna z najbardziej okrutnych i diabelskich płyt polskiego death metalu.

Pół roku zwlekałem z zakupem drugiej płyty Azarath tylko i wyłącznie dlatego, że zraził mnie do siebie slogan reklamowy w katalogu Pagan Records. "To jedna z najbardziej okrutnych i diabelskich płyt nagranych w ostatnich latach", przeczytałem kiedyś. Nie potrafię się po czymś takim powstrzymać od szyderczego śmiechu, po zapewne kilku setkach godzin przespanych przy najróżniejszych "płytach roku" bywa z tym problem. "Infernal Blasting" ściera głupi uśmiech z gęby, brutalnym kopniakiem łamie wyszczerzone zęby i wraz ze złośliwymi komentarzami wbija je z powrotem w gardło. Depcze, niszczy, mieli, wypluwa i szcza na zewłok.

A imię tej bestii - Azarath. Jeszcze kilka lat temu kojarzona wyłącznie jako projekt muzyków Behemoth i Damnation, dzisiaj trójmiejska załoga jest absolutną ekstraklasą death metalu. Nie bójmy się dodać, że nie tylko jeśli chodzi o krajowe podwórko, ale także światową scenę. Nie zawaham się przy tym stwierdzić, że "Infernal Blasting" śmiało można zestawić, jeśli nie ze szczytowymi osiągnięciami gatunku, to przynajmniej z nieco mniej doniosłymi dziełami najważniejszych, najbardziej wpływowych jego przedstawicieli. Ta płyta zionie bowiem nie tylko czystym, nieokiełznanym, perwersyjnym barbarzyństwem w treści, ale też ogromnym profesjonalizmem w formie. I to w każdym jej aspekcie - od wykonania (niewiarygodne partie perkusji w wykonaniu Inferno), przez realizację nagrań (czekać tylko, aż do Arka Malczewskiego i Studio Hendrix zaczną ustawiać się w kolejce pierwsze zachodnie kapele), po wydanie (ascetyczny, elegancki digi-pack). Wszystko jest tu najwyższej próby, a produkt finalny zadowoli najwybredniejszego fana morderczego death metalu, który wyrywa trzewia i każe słuchać diabelskich podszeptów: "kup płytę Azarath, kup płytę Azarath, kup płytę Azarath". Judasze cholerne.

Tak oto doczekaliśmy się smutnych poniekąd czasów, w których jedyne powody do dumy z bycia Polakiem dają Otylia Jędrzejczak i garstka death metalowców z Azarath na czele. Bruno, Bart i Inferno olimpijskiego złota pewnie nie zdobędą, warto natomiast ich uhonorować stawiając oryginał "Infernal Blasting" na półce z płytami. Ściągając mp3, ściągasz komunizm, kupując takie płyty - zapalasz Diabłu ogarek. I jest to dobre.

Azarath is the best-kept secret in death metal. Unbelievably brutal and fast. Chaos, chaos, chaos. War, war, war. The riffs are catchy enough to stick with you and rock out to but are played so heavily and quickly, just completely savage.

The musicianship here is top-notch. The solos are pure Kerry King - fast, noisy, junky scales - and for the music it's perfect. Just totally wild. Behemoth's Inferno contributes some of his fastest, tightest drumming ever, which is probably the real highlight of the album. Vokills appropriately alter between the high screams and low growls to great effect. Production is thin enough to be satisfyingly kvlt without losing the distinctions between the instruments, and the drums come in esp. well. Lyrics are pure Satanic war metal. Azarath keeps it simple, and that's a good thing.

This album floored me when it first came out and I'm still not sick of it. One of the best death metal albums ever.

Expulsados to argentyński zespół punkrockowy założony w 1993 roku w miejscowości Banfield, w partii Lomas de Zamora, w prowincji Buenos Aires. Początkowy skład tworzyli: Sebastian (wokal), Miguel Montiel (gitara), Juan Novoa (bas) i Guillermo Beatriche (perkusja). Ich debiut sceniczny odbył się 25 maja 1993 roku w szkole Paideia w Temperley. Na ich twórczość wpływ miały m.in. amerykański zespół punkowy Ramones, którego utwory wykonywali w wersjach własnych, a także inne grupy z lat 60. i 70., takie jak Buzzcocks, The Kinks, The Who, The Damned, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Beach Boys i inne. Wydali osiem albumów studyjnych i dwie EPki. Wstawka zawiera szósty album studyjny zespołu.
