Ceremony to już nieco zapomniany przedstawiciel holenderskiego death metalu. Zaczynali pod koniec lat 80-tych, by jeszcze w pierwszej połowie następnej dekady być już tylko wspomnieniem dla garstki fanów, którzy poznali się na ich talencie. Dorobek zespołu, choć dość skromny, jest w całości wart uwagi, a już zwłaszcza ta jedyna płyta długogrająca. Holendrzy umiłowali sobie death metal o solidnym współczynniku brutalności i z wyczuwalnym technicznym odchyłem, który zgrabnie łączy w sobie wpływy zarówno szkoły amerykańskiej, jaki i europejskiej.

Z tą pierwszą Ceremony łączą bardzo zbliżone patenty na bezkompromisowe napieprzanie i skłonność do komplikowania struktur, zaś z drugą podejście do surowej produkcji. Należy przy tym zaznaczyć, że muzycy nie dali się porwać bardzo wówczas popularnym u ich rodaków wpływom doom metalu, stąd też Tyranny From Above w przeważającej części jest materiałem opartym na szybkich tempach i odpowiednio ciężkich riffach – czystym gatunkowo, pozbawionym eksperymentów i zmiękczaczy (delikatne i nieistotne dla całości plamy klawiszy pojawiają się bodaj w jednym kawałku), choć nie pewnego elementu zaskoczenia. Ceremony nie silą się na przesadnie subtelne rozwiązania, od pierwszego kawałka dając jasno do zrozumienia, że nie mają zamiaru się pierdolić z słuchaczem jak matka z łobuzem. Główna w tym zasługa intensywnie pracujących gitar, których partie są stosunkowo złożone, z wieloma zmianami motywów i pokręconymi wstawkami, dzięki czemu nie tak łatwo znudzić się Tyranny From Above. W związku z powyższym zastanawia mnie, dlaczego solówki w stosunku do riffów potraktowano ewidentnie na odwal się – tylko dwie trzymają się struktur utworów, natomiast reszta jest wstrzelona byle gdzie i byle jak – ot, takie zwykłe molesty gryfu bez specjalnej inwencji.

Szkoda też, że perkman nieco odstaje poziomem (pomysłowością?) od gitarzystów, bo choć potrafi przywalić (i to zdradzając nawet grindowe inspiracje), to do jego gry wkradają się proste schematy, kiedy akurat mógłby bardziej zaszaleć. Co do wspomnianego elementu zaskoczenia – jest to coś na kształt czystych wokali/wrzasków w damskim wydaniu, które ni z tego ni z owego pojawiają się w „Beyond The Boundaries Of This World” i „Tribulation Foreseen”, będąc mocnym kontrastem dla tradycyjnego growlu. Pierwsza reakcja: o co, kurwa, chodzi? A chodzi o to, że… nie mam bladego pojęcia… Mimo to Tyranny From Above jako całość jest dość zwartym i dobrze skomponowanym materiałem, którym powinni się zainteresować szczególnie fani Torchure, Mercyless i wczesnego Atrocity.

Ceremony was founded in the Rotterdam area in 1989 by Peter Verhoef on guitars (ex Phlebotomized) and released 2 demos, one 7‘’ ep and their debut full lenght 'Tyranny From Above' in 1993. The album was released by Dutch underground label Cyber Music and is now finally re-issued by vic records. Bonus to the album comes the 'Inclemeny' e.p. from 1992 and the 3 track promo demo from 1994. Ceremony played typical extreme Ducth death metal from the early 90's just like their friends and fellow-townsman in Sinister for example. (not surprisingly Peter was asked twice to join Sinister in their early days). All songs are recorded at infames Dutch cult studio Het Pand in Rotterdam with Frits van Mourik (Phlebotomized, Obtruncation, Threnody). Ron van de Pol, founding Sinister member, plays bass on the Ceremony debut album. All tracks are completely remasted by Arco Wolf (IDES). The booklet contains rare pics and extensive liner notes.



Formed in 1989 in South Holland, Dutch death metal legends Ceremony set out a path of destruction in their brief career with an absolutely astounding early release effort before disbanding for two decades and only reforming just recently. Still a stand-out album after all these years, the groups’ debut album was released in 1993 before a remastered reissue with bonus material September 16, 2016 on Vic Records.

At this stage of the genre’s evolution, it was quite obviously going to be a stylistically familiar assault to the American acts populating the scene, and that’s what becomes quite prominent here. The ravenous riff-work here comes through so clearly out of that primitive, dirty thrashing style while intertwined with churning, sprawling rhythms for that energetic burst of intensity and aggression typically found here while also formulating that anguished, churning sound. That this mixture can work well in either going through the varying tempos on display, as this one manages to go from the simplistic, straightforward sprawl that tackles the material at a slower crawl while letting the swirling rhythms take center stage, or blasting away quite viciously with a faster thrash-based series of rhythms that are given quite a prominent display here that makes for quite a stylized American bent to the material by tackling many of the various rhythms and patterns these approaches can bring out of their material. The rumbling charge present here due to these elements makes for a highly effective and enjoyable burst throughout here, yet the fact that it remains so vital and close-minded to the American structure at this stage is a tad disconcerting with there not really much variety here beyond the tempos as the display and attack is so focused on running through the American format that it becomes somewhat easy to forget their identity at times. That isn’t much of an issue here considering not only the time-frame of the release but also the sheer competency of the album in general, but it is something to take in consideration with this one.

Seeing as how this one doesn’t offer up much more than just a surprisingly competent and wholly enjoyable burst of old-school death metal the American way, that alone is more than enough to take this one into consideration here for stalwart fanatics of the genre with this here being quite easily the version of the album to get for those that do follow the genre as a whole.
