...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Definately, at least to me, an improvement over their debut, this was finally the EARTH BAND that found their sound. No more of that New Orleans-type of stuff here, this is definately a more progressive album. Having been familiar with "Solar Fire" for much longer than I had this one, I am amazed how several of the songs on this album reminds me of "Solar Fire". For example, "Meat", which features Chris Slade doing the same kind of drumming as he would later do on "Earth, the Circle Part 2". "Look Around", "Our Friend George" and "I'm Gonna Have You All" all sound like they could fit nicely on "Solar Fire". I really like some of those heavy guitar solo found on "Look Around". The band also did a couple more "down to earth" numbers here. One was "Down Home", with a rather down home feel, almost like The BAND. The other being "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", a Bob DYLAN song which was pretty much what you expect on an EARTH BAND album up until 1975. Also you get a re-recording of a MANFRED MANN Chapter III song, "One Way Glass" (originally on their 1969 debut), but of course this version has all the horns removed and done in the EARTH BAND fashion (including a Moog solo at the end). I own the American LP which has a black cover with the EARTH BAND logo (this was the first EARTH BAND album to feature that logo), rather than white like you expect on the British version on the Philips label. This is probably my second favorite EARTH BAND album outside of "Solar Fire". Proghead ..::TRACK-LIST::.. CD 2 - Glorified Magnified (1972): 1. Meat 4:03 2. Look Around 5:10 3. One Way Glass 4:07 4. ..::OPIS::.. Sześciopłytowy zestaw zawierający antologię kultowej brytyjskiej grupy. Znalazły się tutaj albumy: "Help Yourself" z 1971, "Strange Affair" i "Beware The Shadow" z 1972, "Return Of Ken Whaley", "Happy Days" i "Help Yourself 5" (wydany dopiero w 2004) z 1973, a także solowy album lidera zespołu Malcolma Morleya "Lost And Found", nagrany w 1976 z towarzyszeniem grupy Plummet Airlines, którego taśmy-matki zaginęły i odnalazły się po latach, a następnie zostały wydane w 2002 roku. - A NEW 6CD REMASTERED BOXED SET ANTHOLOGY FEATURING THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS BY THE UNSUNG HEROES OF BRITISH EARLY ‘70s ROCK, HELP YOURSELF - FEATURING 66 TRACKS ON 6 CDs INCLUDING THE ALBUMS HELP YOURSELF, STRANGE AFFAIR, BEWARE THE SHADOW, THE RETURN OF KEN WHALEY / HAPPY DAYS, THE ALBUM FIVE & MALCOLM MORLEY’S 1976 ALBUM LOST & FOUND (BOTH UNRELEASED FOR THIRTY YEARS) ALONG WITH A PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED BBC SESSION & DEMO. - REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL ALBUM MASTER TAPES - INCLUDES AN ILLUSTRATED BOOK WITH EXTENSIVE ESSAY WITH PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PHOTOGRAPHS AND INTERVIEWS & A POSTER Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of PASSING THROUGH – THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS, a 6CD boxed set by the unsung heroes of British early ‘70s rock, HELP YOURSELF. The band was formed in London in 1970, originally as a backing band for singer-songwriter MALCOLM MORLEY and took their influences from American West Coast Country and Acid Rock. After Morley signed to the Famepushers management stable, his manager John Eichler suggested Morley form a new band and HELP YOURSELF was born. Featuring MALCOLM MORLEY (guitars, keyboards, vocals), former Sam Apple Pie member DAVE CHARLES (drums, percussion, vocals), RICHARD TREECE (guitars, vocals, harmonica) and KEN WHALEY (bass), the band signed to United Artists in 1970 and their eponymous debut album was issued in 1971. Following a tour with label mates Brinsley Schwarz and Ernie Graham (also Famepushers artists), Ken Whaley departed the band. An expanded line-up including Ernie Graham and Jonathan Glemser began work on the album STRANGE AFFAIR in 1972, but Graham and Glemser’s departure half-way through the recording saw roadie Paul Burton join the band to complete the album, (which would include the excellent extended track “The All Electric Fur Trapper”). The band embarked on a tour of Switzerland with Welsh rock legends Man and a bond formed between the two groups. The band’s next album, BEWARE THE SHADOW, was an even stronger effort, featuring the Help’s twelve-minute anthem, “Reaffirmation”, a track that displayed the instrumental excellence of the group. Prior to a tour to promote their most recent album Malcolm Morley fell ill with depression and DEKE LEONARD, recently dismissed from Man, took his place. When Morley recovered, Leonard remained with the band, appearing with them on the CHRISTMAS AT THE PATTI concert in Swansea in December 1972. In early 1973 Deke Leonard departed the band to pursue a solo career and the band began work on the album HAPPY DAYS, a record that also featured THE FLYING ACES (featuring former MAN bassist MARTIN ACE and his wife George) and VIVIAN “SPIV’ MORRIS and spawned a touring musical review featuring all the musicians. Paul Burton’s departure during these sessions saw Ken Whaley return to the band. Work then commenced on another album, THE RETURN OF KEN WHALEY. Both albums were released as a package by United Artists later that year. Although critically acclaimed, commercial success continued to elude the band and Help Yourself were dropped by their record label. A fifth album was recorded at Chipping Norton Studios in Oxfordshire in 1973 but this failed to gain a release for over thirty years. The aborted album led to Help Yourself disbanding, with Malcolm Morley and Ken Whaley joining Man in 1974 for their album Winos, Rhinos and Lunatics. Following his departure from Man, Malcolm Morley recorded a solo album in 1976 that would also remain unreleased for thirty years. Over four decades on, HELP YOURSELF are now regarded as one of the great, unsung British bands of their era and the songs of Malcolm Morley are recognised as true treasures. PASSING THROUGH – THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS is a lovingly compiled boxed set which gathers together the albums HELP YOURSELF, STRANGE AFFAIR, BEWARE THE SHADOW, THE RETURN OF KEN WHALEY / HAPPY DAYS, the unreleased album FIVE , all the band’s non-album singles & Malcolm Morley’s unreleased album LOST & FOUND along with a previously unreleased BBC session & a studio demo. The set is newly re-mastered from the original master tapes and features an illustrated booklet with rare photographs and a new essay with interviews and a poster and is a tribute to the inspirational music of HELP YOURSELF. Esoteric More of the same for Help Yourself on their second album, for the most part. Bassist Ken Whaley had taken his leave, replaced by former band roadie Ernie Graham on guitars and vocals (although Whaley would return a couple years later with the band naming their fourth album in his honor). Graham penned the only non-Malcolm Morley track on the first two albums, the strumming and west coast-flavored “Movie Star”. Otherwise most of these tracks are quite similar to the debut, at least most of them. The band would put together their first full- length psych jam here with the ten minute rambling “Excerpts from the ‘All Electric Fur Trapper’”, which would only be topped during their career by the even longer and more improvisational “Reaffirmation” on the ‘Beware the Shadow’ release. The instrumentation is the same: a couple of guitars, piano, bass and drums. Pub band fare for the most part, but Help Yourself had a knack for coming off as just vaguely enough like several ‘A’ list bands to sound like they were a bit more accomplished than what they probably were. The title track for example has a jaunty piano intro and lumbering tempo that bears a striking resemblance to a fair amount of Joe Walsh’s solo stuff; even the theme, something about a classy chick picking up a bum in a bar, sounds like something Walsh would have penned. “Brown Lady” leans quite heavily into Ambrosia or Firefall territory with its strumming acoustic guitar, almost invisible bass line, and disjointed amorous lyrics. The Graham track “Movie Star” fits quite well in between the Morley tunes, but with harmonizing vocals that recall Buffalo Springfield or even CSN; while “Deanna Call and Scotty” has a Morley vocal track and piano accompaniment that could easily have been inspired by any number of tracks from ‘Abbey Road’, or maybe even some of the early seventies albums from the Beatles Lite (ELO). The band moves back into pub rock with “Heaven Row”, even to the extent of including female harmonizing vocal backing. And the closing “Many Ways of Meeting” has a real “Let it Be” feel to it but without any kind of heavy lyrical undercurrent of meaning. But the stand out track is the aforementioned “Excerpts from the ‘All Electric Fur Trapper’”, a lightly psychedelic and slow- developing instrumental that weaves in acoustic picking, electric strumming, fuzz, and some odd keyboard effects with a couple minutes of undisciplined jamming that sounds awfully acid-inspired. The result is one of those space-out songs that is best listened to in early dusk while lying on the hood of your car in a park somewhere. Peaceful, easy stuff, and probably brought the lighters out when it was played live at festivals back then (assuming it was played live at festivals, which I’m sure it was). The next couple albums would be a bit heavier than this one, which is a bit heavier than the debut. But in reality these guys can be easily lumped with Man, pre-Laurie Wisefield Wishbone Ash, or Home. In other words British pub rock that aspires to be a bit more, and is inexplicably very west coast leaning in its execution. Decent stuff, probably not progressive, but worth a listen unless you are a prog purist. Three stars. ClemofNazareth ..::TRACK-LIST::.. CD 2 - STRANGE AFFAIR (remastered edition) Released in 1972: 1. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. "Live in Paris 1973" to zapis występu z 23 lutego '73 w słynnej paryskiej sali koncertowej L'Olympia. "Live in Paris 1973" to zapis występu z 23 lutego '73 w słynnej paryskiej sali koncertowej L'Olympia. To coś w rodzaju hindustańskiej ragi odpowiednio przefiltrowanej przez krautrockowy styl Can. "Live in Paris 1973" to niewątpliwie najlepsza z dotychczasowych odsłon tej serii. Paweł Pałasz Mute and Spoon Records present the next installment of the curated CAN live concert series, LIVE IN PARIS 1973 - the first in the series to feature Damo Suzuki vocals. Out now on double vinyl and 2 disc CD, with exclusive sleeve notes by journalist Wyndham Wallace. The series was overseen by founding member Irmin Schmidt and producer/engineer René Tinner, who delicately worked on restoring the archival recordings to the best quality for current modern technology. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. "Live in Paris 1973" to zapis występu z 23 lutego '73 w słynnej paryskiej sali koncertowej L'Olympia. To coś w rodzaju hindustańskiej ragi odpowiednio przefiltrowanej przez krautrockowy styl Can. "Live in Paris 1973" to niewątpliwie najlepsza z dotychczasowych odsłon tej serii. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. Wydawnictwo „Air Born: The MCA & Decca Years 1973-1984” przygotowano z okazji 50-lecia ukazania się pierwszego longplaya formacji. Do tego dojdą trzy recitale dla BBC: BBC Radio One „In Concert” – 6 czerwiec 1974, BBC Radio One „In Concert” – 22 kwiecień 1975 oraz BBC „In Concert” – Golders Green Hippodrome – 29 wrzesień 1977. Kolejne trzy koncerty to na nowo zmiksowane występy: „Live at Marquee Club, London” – 20 czerwiec 1974, „Live at Hammersmith Odeon” – 14 kwiecień 1976 oraz „Live at Hammersmith Odeon” – 1 październik 1977. Dwa mniej znane nagrania „Autumn” i „Riverman”, zespół zrealizował gdzieś pomiędzy longplayami „Mirage” i „The Snow Goose”. Krążek „Moonmadness” uzupełnią m.in. trzy studyjne dema. I wreszcie utwór „Captured” z płyty „Nude” usłyszymy we wczesnej, nieznanej dotąd wersji. Jeśli chodzi o materiały wideo, to poza paroma klipami i fragmentami występów z TV znajdą się tam koncerty: BBC TV „The Old Grey Whistle Test” – 21 czerwiec 1975, Live at Hammersmith Odeon – 1 październik 1977 oraz film „Pressure Points”. Pudełko uzupełni oczywiście gruba książka oraz plakat. Paweł Nawara The box features 27 CDs & five blu-rays and includes newly remastered versions of every Camel album and single issued between 1973 and 1984, but also includes new stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound versions of five albums, as well as new mixes of three concerts; The Marquee Club, London 1974, Hammersmith Odeon 1976 and Hammersmith Odeon 1977. The package also features previously unreleased outtakes from album recording sessions and BBC Radio ‘In Concert’ appearances from 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1981. Emerging just in time to honour the 50th anniversary of their debut album, Air Born is a sprawling boxed set which, as the title implies, celebrates their years spent with MCA and Decca. This was not always a happy time in terms of the band's relationship with Decca; in particular, after Andy Ward suffered a mental health crisis and attempted suicide, Andrew Latimer wanted to put the band on hiatus for a while to give Ward a chance to recuperate, but heartlessly Decca demanded that Camel put out a new studio album anyway - and pressured them to make it commercially friendly on top of that - which is what led to the critical stumble of The Single Factor. Still, musically speaking this covers the music which Camel built their legacy on and more besides. Full remasters (and, for some select albums, additional stereo remixes) of all the Camel studio releases from their debut to Stationary Traveller are, naturally, included, along with a range of supplementary material ranging from unreleased studio tracks through to full live performances. Much of this stuff has emerged in one form or another as bonus tracks over time, but there are a few significant bits of material which are new to this release. The major scoop of the collection is the full demo tape the band recorded in between their debut album and Mirage, which finds early versions of almost all the Mirage tracks present - only Freefall from that album is missing, and instead we get The Traveller, a Uriah Heep-ish piece which seems to have been abandoned as being more in keeping with their debut album's sound than Mirage's. In terms of sound quality, the demo is top notch, and captures the band's musical growth since they recorded their self-titled album marvellously, forming a hitherto-missing link between that and Mirage. As for the live material, this is largely a mixture of BBC sessions and material released elsewhere, though there are enhancements and additions here and there. Early live performances include the take on God of Light Revisited originally recorded for the Greasy Truckers - Live At Dingwalls Dance Hall release, a funky, Santana-influenced piece. Again, this has been fairly widely repackaged as a bonus track on some issue or other over the years. BBC sessions here include a June 1974 recording showcasing the band fresh from the release of Mirage, a more expansive 1975 offering giving extensive extracts from The Snow Goose (with the band on excellent form and proving they didn't need the orchestra to evoken the album's magic live), their excellent appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, and a 1977 Sight and Sound In Concert appearance from the Rain Dances lineup primarily focused on that album but also including great takes on Snow Goose material, Never Let Go from the debut, and an absolutely stellar take on Lunar Sea from Moonmadness. Much of this material has shown up as bonus tracks or on bootlegs over the years, but it's nice to get it in fairly definitive versions here. Rather than presenting A Live Record in either its original or expanded configurations, the box instead offers the complete original live recordings from the different shows which made up that release. This includes a full set from the Marquee Club in October 1974, in which the band both burn through excellent renditions of Mirage-era material and road test compositions which would later make it onto The Snow Goose. The sound quality on this is remarkably good - perhaps the best of any of the pre-Goose live offerings here - and it's interesting how the Snow Goose compositions differ to account for the lack of an orchestra in tow. Naturally, there's also the Royal Albert Hall full performance of The Snow Goose with orchestra from 1975, which would form the basis of the second disc of A Live Record; this is enhanced by an encore performance of Lady Fantasy, skillfully adapted to account for the orchestra. We also get a full concert set from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1976; previously only smatterings of this had been borrowed for the extended CD version of A Live Record or on some reissues of Moonmadness, but having the full show to hand in its original running order is excellent. There's a few technical issues audible - notably some faint buzzing on a few tracks which could be down to the original tapes having an issue or might be indicative of some of the band's equipment having a bit of a moment, but this is a mild blemish easily overlooked, especially since some care seems to have been taken here to tidy up the lives tapes as best as possible. This live set is especially valuable since it provides a final showcase for the original lineup of Camel - some would say the classic lineup - prior to personnel shifts and their Rain Dances-era drift into a Canterbury-influenced direction. You get Latimer, Ward, Ferguson, and Bardens at the absolute top of their game, with a setlist drawn from some of the greatest albums not just in the Camel discography but in the progressive rock pantheon as a whole, with the setlist finally presented on disc more or less as it was conceived to be delivered onstage; when you think about it, that's absolutely fantastic. The band return to the Odeon in 1977 for a barnstorming set which, along with some stray tracks from other venues rounding off the Live Record material. The 1977 Odeon show is the fullest document of the Rain Dances lineup live on this set, and it's absolutely superb. Between that and the tracks from Bristol and Leeds, the Rain Dances period ends up being the era of the band that's perhaps best-represented by live material here (with The Snow Goose period a close second). Other live material in the collection includes a tightened-up reissue of the BBC session previously released as On the Road 1981 (including two tracks - Summer Lightning and Ice - not included on previous releases of the BBC session) and, lastly, a remaster of Pressure Points. Most prog fans will have at least some of the material here - though the new mixes of Camel, Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness, and Nude are good enough to be worth dipping into (and the previous mixes are also presented so you can judge which you prefer) - but even Camel fanatics probably won't have all of it. If you've got significant gaps to fill in your Camel collection - or if the prospect of all those live goodies have you salivating - it's highly worthwhile, offering the lion's share of their output in one package. If you've got significant gaps to fill in your Camel collection - or if the prospect of all those live goodies have you salivating - it's highly worthwhile, offering the lion's share of their output in one package. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::.. If you've got significant gaps to fill in your Camel collection - or if the prospect of all those live goodies have you salivating - it's highly worthwhile, offering the lion's share of their output in one package. ...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::..
