Na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych historia splata ze sobą losy czterech chłopaków z Chrzanowa. Ich ograniczone perspektywy na zostanie fabrykantem lub ziemskim właścicielem zadecydowały o powstaniu punkowej kapeli Droga Ewakuacyjna, która po kilku koncertach zmieniła nazwę na NON SERVIAM (Nie będę służył). Nowa nazwa dość dobrze oddawała to co chłopaki mieli w głowach (niezależność, bunt, anarchia…).

Próby, koncerty i pierwsze pozytywne recenzje słuchaczy. Powstało pierwsze demo – wydane przez Kornicore Independent. O dziwo – recenzje niezależnych krytyków muzycznych były równie życzliwe.
– Wkrótce powstał drugi materiał w studiu, które było z naszego punktu widzenia bardzo profesjonalne – wspominają muzycy – Nie mogliśmy się doczekać wydania, był przełom 1998/99 roku. I nagle wszystko się skończyło. Non Serviam przestał istnieć. Robota, rodziny, mała stabilizacja?

Muzycy zespołu spotkali się ponownie w 2016 r. Wydany wówczas, archiwalny materiał o tytule „Speranda”, miał być tylko udokumentowaną pamiątką po NON SERVIAM, a stał się impulsem do powrotu na scenę.
Upływ 18 lat, szersze fascynacje muzyczne legły u podstaw decyzji o tworzeniu nowego repertuaru, w którym niepoślednie miejsce zajęła muzyka ska.
– Muzyka, jaką teraz gramy jest…. różnorodna – Tak swoje aktualne oblicze ocenia zespół – Nie jesteśmy w stanie zadeklarować, że będziemy grać tylko SKA, tylko PUNK ROCKA lub tylko REGGAE. Po prostu gramy to, co nam się podoba, a teksty są dalej o tym co nas boli i wkurza.



W 2016 roku chrzanowskie Non Serviam wróciło z materiałem „Speranda” nagranym… 18 lat wcześniej. Jak się okazało, nie był to jednorazowy wybryk ekipy starszych kolesi, którzy zatęsknili do punkowej czasów, bo zespół powrócił na dobre. Efektem tej reaktywacji jest premierowy krążek „Balansujesz” wydany przez Jimmy Jazz Records.

Sądząc po tytule i okładce można by się było spodziewać jakiegoś luzackiego podkładu do skankowania z punkowym pazurem, a tutaj niespodzianka. Non Serviam leci i na poważnie i na smutno i na ostro. Choć promujący album tytułowy „Balansujesz” taki akurat nie jest. Wprawdzie trochę tego ska się tutaj pojawia, ale przewaga jest po stronie ostrego grania w stylu punkowych kapel z lat 90., kiedy popularna była charakterystyczna stylistyka punky-reggae. Amerykańskich klimatów pokroju Less Than Jake czy Mighty Mighty Bostoness tutaj nie znajdziemy — a w sumie mogłyby się pojawić, bo w podstawowym składzie Non Serviam znajdziemy puzon. Z tym puzonem to mam akurat problem. Nie jestem wielkim fanem dęciaków, ale jak są celnie wykorzystane to brzmią doskonale. Na „Balansujesz” nastąpiła pewna przesada, bo kolega Pietka gra na tym puzonie praktycznie przez cały czas. Zazwyczaj aranże instrumentów dętych robi się bardziej oszczędne, a tutaj puzon leci przez 90% materiału. Gdyby chociaż to brzmienie było cieplejsze i bardziej stonowane przy wyższych dźwiękach, a tak to czuć tutaj tę zimną, rozedrganą blachę. Przy jednym utworze nie jest to jakiś wielki problem, ale jak słuchamy tego puzonu w kolejnej piosence z rzędu, to jest tego po prostu zbyt dużo. W przypadku dęciaków mniej znaczy więcej. Choć jeśli ktoś kocha puzony to może to być dla niego spora zaleta :) Podoba mi się za to wokal — ze Skorupa Freddiego Mercurego wprawdzie nie zrobimy, ale w kategorii klasycznie punkowy polski styl wokalny radzi sobie fajnie. Generalnie, miłośnicy starego polskiego punka i punky-reggae powinni być z „Balansujesz” zadowoleni.

Teksty Non Serviam to ciekawa sprawa. Słychać, że nie są to już młodzieżowe punkowe liryki, a ich twórcy trochę już w życiu widzieli. Czuć też, że Non Serviam to wrażliwi na ludzką krzywdę ludzie — zwłaszcza w utworze „Dom woskowych twarzy”, opowiadającym o dzieciaku z pijącej, patologicznej rodziny, który postanawia uciec z domu. Ciekawy kawałek, również pod kątem ryzykownego aranżu, bo wprowadzanie do punkowego numeru recytowanych wstawek często wypada słabo trącając kiczem i patosem. Tutaj jest w punkt.

W liście dołączonym do poprzedniej płyty znalazło się takie zdanie: „sami nie wiemy, czy dobrze zrobiliśmy odgrzebując ten stary materiał, czy nie lepiej byłoby wejść do studia i nagrać nowy, świeży i dojrzalszy”. No i co, Non Serviam zrobiło i jedno i drugie. I gratulacje.

Przy okazji dziękuję za pozdrowienia we wkładce, choć zdaje sobie z tego sprawę, że operator puzonu przy kolejnej płycie może już na to nie pozwolić :)

Formed in 1968, Skin Alley were part of the infamous Clearwater stable that included fellow acts such as Hawkwind, High Tide, Trees and Cochise. The band’s infectious fusion of jazz and rock was suited to the time and the band became a regular attraction on the underground festival and concert circuit.

Skin Alley recorded their self-titled debut album for CBS Records in November 1969 with former Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor producing. The band’s second album, ‘To Pagham and Beyond’ was recorded in 1970, along with a shelved soundtrack album for an unreleased film about the German model Verushka.

In June 1971 Skin Alley performed at the legendary Glastonbury Fayre and the following year they contributed a track to the fund-raising triple album of the same name which also featured The Grateful Dead, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Gong and Hawkwind among others. Signing to Transatlantic Records in 1972 they released the album ‘Two Quid Deal’ later that year. Their final album, ‘Skintight’, was issued in 1973.

This 4CD set has been newly remastered and is a fine tribute to one of Britain’s great unsung underground acts of the early 1970s includes all of Skin Alley’s albums and rare single tracks, along with the shelved Stop Verushka! soundtrack and the version of ‘Sun Music’ from Glastonbury Fayre.



Second album from this West London group (although there might have some Americans in the group), released the same year as their debut on the same CBS label. Apparently the sessions of To Pagham and Beyond suffered from some unrest: bassist Crimble left in the course of recording (headed for Hawkwind) and was replaced by ex-Atomic Rooster bassist-singer Nick Graham (an important reinforcement for SA), the production is not quite up to the debut (same person for both albums) and with an orange nonsense gatefold artwork, finally CBS dropped them soon after its release. Although the SA sound remains relatively intact, the songwriting seems a bit weaker (but nothing really noticeable, but the tracks tend to drag on a bit) and all tracks are 7 minutes or longer, bar the closer (clocking at 5.5 minutes); but something is lacking in TPAB.
Right from the opening of Big Brother, you'll find the same jazzy proto-prog spirit than on their debut (even if the vocals don't sound like Cressida anymore), but something is not there (I say the production is faulty, but it's still Fritz and it is engineered by Martin Birch); nevertheless the tune is pleasant with a cool slow piano mid-section crescendoing back to the groove, but ending with an atrocious-sounding snare drum roll. Starting on Bob James's superb flute (often rightly compared to Anderson, but never wild and saturated), Leader's Daughter is a superb 9-mins jazzy-grooved track with Juskiewicz's piano twirling all over and James' sax, a bit reminiscent of VdGG's Jaxon. Next is a poorer and muddy version of Graham Bond's Walking In The Park, at least compared to Colosseum's, and to which it sticks a bit too closely to be useful.

Queen of Bad Intention starts the flipside on an organ line with a sturdy and steady beat, a fiery guitar solo hovering over a Hammond-driven rock and a very proggy finale lead by the piano. A badly recorded chaos starts the 8-mins Sweaty Betty (one of two tracks sung by newcomer Graham, but written by the departing Crimble) and the track settles into a groove taking a brass rock twist (Graham also plays wind instruments, Juskiewicz plays trumpet), but it's plagued by a lengthy drum solo from Giles Pope. The closing Easy To Lie again has brass rock feel (Graham, James and Justie on brass/woods), but strangely recorded once again

Although still a very worthy album, TPAB doesn't hold the charm of its predecessor and might logically disappoint a bit (maybe a good remastering is needed, that maybe Eclectic Discs has done), but for obscure reasons their label stopped investing. The group was not record its next album until 72 after changing drummer and finding a new recording contract. If you like the debut, this one is well in its line, even if not as mighty.

The Dreadnoughts to kanadyjski zespół celtic punk rockowy, założony w 2006 roku w Vancouver. Początkowo The Dreadnoughts prezentowało melodyjne połączenie szant z muzyką punk rockową, ale z biegiem czasu w nagraniach formacji pojawiało się dużo naleciałości z krajów takich jak Ukraina, Polska, Rosja czy Niemcy a grupa często sięgała po melodie ze znanych oberków, polek czy kujawiaków.
