'Budowniczowie Grozy' to sludge metal brudny, uliczny i chamski, jak zawsze.
Cel jest niezmiennie ten sam: wpędzić słuchacza w dyskomfort używając dobrze już znanych środków - tłustych riffów, mięsistych refrenów, niebanalnych tekstów. No i kija baseballowego, oczywiście.

Album 'Budowniczowie Grozy' to podróż w głąb najczarniejszych odmętów ludzkiej natury i demonów, jakie w niej drzemią. Las Trumien po raz kolejny udowadnia, że z miłością do mocnej muzyki pięknie opisuje śmierć.

Wiele mówi się o tym, jak skuteczna i przyjemna jest nauka poprzez zabawę. Taką zabawą może być na przykład słuchanie muzyki, jednak nie musi być ona łatwa, o przyjemnej tematyce. Na warsztat możemy wziąć przecież historie zwyrodnialców, których nosiła Ziemia, ale o takim, dajmy na to, Josefie Mengele utwór napisać może każdy (to oczywiście odniesienie do "Angel of death" Slayera). Polski zespół Las Trumien podchodzi do tematu w sposób bardzo profesjonalny i przedstawia historie zwyroli "drugoligowych", którym (mimo "zasług") nigdy nie udało przebić się do mainstreamu. Wyraźnie widać, że już na starcie tej ekipie należy się duży szacunek za wysiłek w poszukiwaniach, a nie pójście na łatwiznę.

"Budowniczowie Grozy" to trzeci longplay w krótkiej, ale intensywnej karierze zespołu. Grupa powstała w 2020 roku i w dorobku ma jeszcze dwie EP-ki, jednak patrząc na skład, od razu zauważymy muzyków z doświadczeniem z innych ekip o zdecydowanie dłuższym stażu. W każdej z nich przewijają się różne odsłony metalu, zatem nic dziwnego, że Las Trumien również obraca się w tym gatunku, kierując swoje brzmienie w rejony stonerowo-sludge'owe.

Na przestrzeni czterech lat istnienia styl ten raczej mocno nie ewoluował ani nie zmieniał się wyraźnie. Zmiany słychać natomiast w warsztacie i zgraniu muzyków. "Budowniczowie Grozy" wydają się być albumem najbardziej zaawansowanym i dojrzałym muzycznie w dotychczasowej dyskografii. W zasadzie wszystko się tutaj zgadza - szybkie, stosunkowo krótkie utwory doskonale wpadają w ucho i świetnie współpracują z tekstami o historiach różnych zwyrodnialców i ich ofiar. Tutaj wachlarz jest szeroki zarówno pod względem lokalizacji, jak i czasu. Mamy też polskie akcenty, w tym te z rodzimego, szczecińskiego podwórka.

Mimo specyficznej i bardzo ciężkiej tematyki Wojtkowi Kałuży udaje się wpleść w teksty sporo gierek słownych oraz wysublimowanego poczucia humoru (szczególnie w refrenie "Pokaż Ząbki"). Do tego dochodzi wiele fragmentów od razu wpadających w ucho, które świetnie sprawdzą się na koncertach. Gwoździem programu są tutaj "Trupie Rozmówki" z tak charakterystycznym tematem, że ciężko przez długi czas pozbyć się go z głowy.

Wisienką na torcie (trumnie?) tego wydawnictwa jest bez wątpienia "Długa Droga Do Piekła", czyli dowód na to, że nawet dla tak specyficznej tematyki da się skomponować balladę. Wojtek Kałuża udowadnia tutaj również, że poza krzykiem i wrzaskiem potrafi też zaśpiewać czysto i całkiem nieźle mu to wychodzi. Na plus wydawnictwa działa również jego poligrafia, po raz kolejny wydana bardzo porządnie przez Patryka z Piranha Records. Poza tekstami utworów znajdziemy tutaj również rozpisane historie "bohaterów" utworów.

Dużej części reprezentantów nowego materiału miałem okazję posłuchać na koncercie. W tej odsłonie Las Trumien również wypada bardzo dobrze - brzmi ciężko i mięsiście, porywając ludzi do zabawy pod sceną. W zasadzie jedyny zarzut można mieć do czasu trwania. Repertuaru nazbierało się już sporo, można by koncert pociągnąć jeszcze z 10-15 minut dłużej, zwłaszcza że publika była głodna kolejnych dźwięków. Niecierpliwie czekam na dalszy rozwój wydarzeń, czyli kolejne wydawnictwa.

I've always felt that expressing one's message through emotional appeals, especially the more forlorn, downcast sentiments, paves the way for the greatest level of introspection, and such an approach is particularly effective when the message is that of peace and love. It is in times of sorrow that one truly gains a broader perspective on life, for in order to truly love one must first suffer the pain of loss and emptiness.

This thematic overtone, characterized by its own obscurity, meshes well with the circumstances of early doom metal bands throughout the 80's, being unlike the majority of the metal scene at the time, and largely disregarded by its acolytes. The doom bands were few and scattered, and nor was doom metal an intentional or recognized subgenre until the later part of the 80's. Other than the early material of the almighty Sabbath, you had Pagan Altar and Witchfinder General in the UK, Saint Vitus and Cirith Ungol in California, Pentagram in Virginia, The Obsessed in Maryland, Nemesis/Candlemass in Sweden, and the most adherent to the philosophy expressed in the previous paragraph, Chicago's Trouble.

Having released a series of demos and and making an appearance on 1983's Metal Massacre IV compilation, Trouble paved the way for their landmark debut album, Psalm 9. From these releases, it was clear that Trouble, while undeniably metal, had a different creative vision. Firstly, their lyrics centered around positive themes expressed through the Christian perspective. Singer Eric Wagner noted he had been brought up Christian and did not see fit to write lyrics of darkness and evil as the first wave black metal bands of the time had done, since there was genuine trouble to be addressed in the world. Second, Trouble's sound was obviously quite doomy, as even when they weren't playing at a crawl, their music still carried a sense of longing and despair, influences the band said they had picked up from the darker side of the NWOBHM and slower heavy rock before it. Furthermore, their image was more redolent of hippie culture than the metal community's favored attire in the 1980's, leaving no doubt that they identified more with the ideals of mutual understanding and concern for all their fellow humans than they did the hard-headed shunning of perspectives other than one's own that was the attitude of thrash metal at the time.

All of this paves the way for what is unequivocally the quintessential doom metal album, and Trouble's darkest yet most wholesome moment, 1985's The Skull. Being slightly more focused, sorrowful, and philosophical than its predecessor, it proves to be the epitome of the genre at its finest. "Pray For the Dead" crescendos in and uses such a tortured, melancholic melody to descend into its grooving doom riff that it portrays exactly what it feels like to mourn the loss of a loved one, and yet it feels oddly comforting at its sentimental, uplifting chorus, truly making the most of despondency.

Beyond this monumental opener, The Skull is quite a well-balanced release, with faster cuts like "Fear No Evil" still keeping the doom feeling consistent through the use of Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin's winding dual guitar harmonies, and mid-tempo pieces like "Truth Is What Is" offering a break from the more emotionally intense doom of the album's centerpieces such as "The Wish" and "The Skull". The former is one of the most powerful anti-suicide songs ever conceived, with an incredibly strong doom riff conveying the feeling of unending depression from day to miserable day. However, despite being such a massive slab of melancholy, this song still manages to be healing and introspective, and it does not feel like an 11 minute song due to how well structured it is. "The Skull", meanwhile, creates a truly menacing and ominous atmosphere with its somber acoustic guitar chords, surely an influence on Candlemass' acoustic segments on their masterpiece Epicus Doomicus Metallicus.

The mention of the latter band brings me to my next point, that being that The Skull is hugely influential to all future doom, especially the likes of Candlemass ("Darkness in Paradise" nearly borrows a riff from "Wickedness of Man"), Cathedral (Forest of Equilibrium is like The Skull but more bleak and extreme, but also oddly comforting), Solitude Aeturnus (literally Trouble if they were epic doom instead of traditional doom), and Crowbar (the intro to "Planets Collide", "The Lasting Dose"). One can even hear the sorrow-oozing guitar lines in the doomy drudge of bands like Autopsy and spot the influence of Trouble.

The distinctive, near-falsetto singing of Eric Wagner and the dual guitar sound of Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin also make Trouble's sound unmistakable and incredibly memorable, with the capable rhythm section of bassist Sean McAllister and drummer Jeff Olson enhancing the experience even further. This remarkable musicianship is one thing that makes Trouble stand out so much and makes The Skull, with its seven perfect songs, feel like the very definition of true doom metal focused on superb songwriting and conveying an ultimately positive and uplifting message. These characteristics all embody the hippie-like nature of traditional doom metal perfectly and make Trouble my absolute favorite doom band, with The Skull being my pick for not only their best album, but the best and most essential doom metal album of all time. It feels so real, grounded, intentional, philosophical, and honest that it is a monument to all the goodness that humankind has to offer, solidified by the wisdom of its lyrical content and its tremendously powerful heaviness.

W czterech utworach zespół zanurza się w metaforycznej topieli eksplorując tematy przesądów, szkodliwych tradycji, erotyki i kosmicznych cywilizacji.



Zespołem Wij byłem zachwycony już przy okazji kontrowersyjnej debiutanckiej płycie „Dziwidło”. Kontrowersyjnej, gdyż tyle samo osób mówiło, że jest świetna, co że wręcz przeciwnie. Ja natomiast wyczekiwałem nowego uderzenia Warszawiaków.

I przyszło – ku mojemu zaskoczeniu, ale i zadowoleniu w barwach Piranha Music. „Przeklęte Wody” to EPka, a znajdziecie na niej cztery, doskonałe numery. Jak scharakteryzować ten materiał? Mniej Breakout, więcej Black Sabbath. No, nie tylko Breakout, generalnie w recenzji pierwszej płyty wymieniłem szereg zespołów z polskiego bigbeatu, którymi moim zdaniem zespół się inspirował. Teraz inspiracje pewnie nadal są, ale na płycie słychać zdecydowanie więcej stoner/doom metalu. Pierwszy numer jest jeszcze osadzony w takim hard rockowo/stonerowym klimacie, z ciekawymi pomysłami Tui na wokale. Drugi numer, od którego poniekąd cała EPka zaczerpnęła tytuł – to cover Type O Negative. Przyznam, że zajęło mi kilka chwil, zanim zajarzyłem, czyja to przeróbka. I takie covery to ja lubię, bo zespół nadaje mu całkowicie inny klimat – czyli powtórzyli trick z debiutu z coverem Venom. Następnie mamy „Jutra Nie Ma” – w którym stoner miesza się z wpływami takich grup jak Fu Manchu. Gitary tutaj są totalnie wspaniałe. Zapiaszczone, grzechoczące jak ogon wiadomego węża na gorącej, postapokaliptycznej pustyni. Bębny zresztą też są świetne. O wokalu już mówiłem. Doskonały numer, który trwa mniej niż trzy minuty. Ostatni kawałek „Metabunkier” to już jest istny Black Sabbath a’la „Electric Funeral” czy „Hand of Doom”. No i doskonały tekst! Za serce złapał mnie oczywiście „technopapież”. No ale teksty Wij są naprawdę świetne, więc nie ma czego się dziwić. Co cieszy mnie dodatkowo, wiele osób, które położyły laskę na debiucie zachwycają się tą EPką. Cóż, lepiej późno niż wcale.

Dobra, bawiłem się świetnie przy słuchaniu „Przeklętych Wód” i pisaniu tej recenzji i wcale nie dlatego, że wyjebałem pół nalewki cytrynowej przy okazji. To jest po prostu super materiał i już nie mogę się doczekać ich kolejnego wydawnictwa. Kupujcie i wspierajcie.

Oracle


Wśród najciekawszych premier, jakie w zeszłym roku miały miejsce na polskiej scenie okołometalowej, bez wahania wymieniłabym debiutancki album Wija. Warszawskie trio zaprezentowało połączenie klasycznego, rockowego klimatu ze sfuzzowanym brzmieniem przywodzącym na myśl lata siedemdziesiąte. Wszystko zostało doprawione nieszablonowymi tekstami, w których nie zabrakło zarówno baśniowych, jak i groteskowych motywów.
Nie inaczej jest na ich najnowszym minialbumie, Przeklęte Wody. Na EPce znalazły się trzy autorskie utwory oraz cover (będący intrygującym wyborem, ale o tym za chwilę). Kompozycje zebrane na nowym EP są niczym trip w szeroko pojęte rockowe rejony, gdzie przewodniczką słuchacza zostaje charyzmatyczna wokalistka, Tuja Szmaragd.

Pierwsza ścieżka minialbumu, Narwal, jest naznaczona jest charakterystycznym dla Wija stylem – wokale są zabarwione bluesem, a chwytliwy rytm buja, jak należy. W połączeniu z tekstem nawiązującym do średniowiecznych wierzeń o jednorożcach, otrzymujemy znany z debiutu mroczno-baśniowy klimat, jednak niepozbawiony pewnych niuansów. Choć zespół wciąż porusza się po rejonach zahaczających o occult oraz stoner rock, w ich muzyce odczuwalnie robi się przede wszystkim ciężej, a utwory również są utrzymane przeważnie w wolnych i średnich tempach.
Najlepszym przykładem jest Metabunkier – świetny, przesycony doomem kawałek. Można śmiało powiedzieć, że to najcięższy moment na EPce, zawierający przy tym dosyć niespodziewany (i zresztą bardzo udany) psychodeliczny motyw, jakiego nie powstydziłyby się stonerowe hymny najwyższej próby.
Kolejną niespodzianką jest wspomniany cover – Wilczy Nów jest bowiem aranżacją jednego z klasyków Type O Negative, co okazało się fenomenalnym wyborem. Wij udowodnił, że numery legendarnego zespołu niekoniecznie muszą oznaczać niski wokal, a klimat można dodatkowo podkręcić, eliminując klawisze i dbając o efektowną końcówkę. Tutaj ponownie warto zwrócić uwagę na warstwę tekstową, gdyż z Wijem nigdy nie jest nudno – czy chodzi o autorskie teksty, czy o tłumaczenie coveru, które sprawia, że utworu świetnie się słucha.

O ile na debiutanckim albumie nie zabrakło żwawszych (pokuszę się o stwierdzenie, że momentami wręcz przebojowych) brzmień, Przeklęte Wody zdają się być mroczniejszą odsłoną twórczości Wija. Na Przeklęte Wody składają się bowiem cztery ścieżki łącznie trwające nieco ponad 16 minut. Minialbum może więc pozostawić niektórych z poczuciem niedosytu, ale innej grupie słuchaczy zapewne zaostrzy apetyt na następny album – a sądząc po czasie dzielącym debiut od EP, nie trzeba będzie zbyt długo na to czekać.
