Yes, this is the same thrash metal band from the east coast that was one of the early signees with the then fledgling label, New Renaissance Records started by none other than Ann Boleyn. These guys released two albums, an EP and also had a couple of their tracks on the speed metal hell compilations back in the eighties which practically did not get them anywhere(while still drawing critical acclaim for being one of the first speed metal bands) and then vanished from the scene altogether. After a sabbatical of nearly 21 years, the trio is back again with this release titled “Infidel” and seems like this could have been on their eighties catalog. The feel of this album is pure old school and by no means utilizes any half step measures of the late 90s and post 2000. At War is back in business!!!!

Just like the previous two albums, the band uses the tried and tested formula of keeping the length of this one well within 35 minutes which in is fair enough for a speed metal band that uses a good dose of punk as well. The production is done pretty well alongside keeping the old school eighties feel intact. All the instruments can be easily distinguished from each other without any single instrument dominance, while the vocals are yet again vintage Motorhead style, though with a little more gruff and thrash edge. The songs in here are short and crisp, devoid of any sad as hell intros and background noise effects whereas the riff work is brilliant. Another thing likeable about this release is that the tuning is Standard E and not the drop D style that most bands follow these days.

As for the tracks, all of them blend along very well without giving any hint of falling apart at the seams. I feel no necessity of covering each and every track in detail but instead pick out a few that stick to my head prompting me to listen to them again. “Assassins” has that main riff that is some of the best I’ve heard in recent years and “Semper Fi” sort of reminded me of “Indulgence” era Nasty Savage without the insane wails of Nasty Ronnie and to an extent, Slayer in some of the guitar parts. The tracks that really stand out though are “At War” and “R.A.F”, filled with oodles of energy and a total war attitude that reminds newcomers of how thrash metal should be done. The closer “Rapechase” is a track that appeared on their debut album and also one of the “Speed Metal Hell” compilations and this in my opinion is an absolute banger of a song that could have given some of the big names back during the thrash boom a run for their money and fame.

Though some people out there would argue that this release is no different from what they did back in the eighties, and that the band has not matured at all after all these years. My take on this is that even though these guys sound dated, they’re still better off than all those bands who have taken an absolutely approach to their music. An example would be At War’s ex-label mates Sepultura who have transformed themselves beyond recognition. From a death/thrash hybrid to a total shitty sounding groove band, they’ve just made themselves look like clowns of a circus troupe. This trio on the other hand do not show any signs of compromising on their original sound and still show loyalty towards their fans with no intentions whatsoever of alienating them.

As far as the recommendation is concerned, I’d definitely go the extra mile to support these guys and bring them to the notice of the masses. Fans of yesteryear thrash, proto death and mid era Motorhead would find interest of significance here. This is the return of the war veterans.

The best way to learn about thrash metal is, ironically, not through its big names. Most of the "Big Four" of thrash (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer) became big by straying from the genre. Metallica started writing radio hits; Megadeth tried to do likewise. Anthrax dabbled in rap, alt-metal, and rock. Only Slayer stayed mostly true to thrash, but they are so sui generis that they are almost their own genre. Thus, the so-called "second tier"-- bands that never made it big-- comprise thrash's true sound. These bands knock out machine-gun riffs and polka beats with no regard for the mainstream, and are often much more intense than the Big Four.

At War are one such band. Even when they began in the 1980s, they stood out from the thrash herd. They were from Virginia, not one of America's thrash epicenters (New York City, Los Angeles, the Bay Area). They also weren't pacifists. Much of 1980s thrash was a reaction to Reagan-era policies, with countless bands preaching the horrors of nuclear war. At War, however, were unabashed military supporters. They weren't necessarily right-wing conservatives; one of their songs advocated the separation of church and state. But they had friends and family in the military, and paid tribute to that history through their music. Thus, military imagery pervaded their artwork, and military sounds peppered their albums.

Like most of their thrash colleagues, At War stood down in the 1990s once grunge came along. But popular music is cyclical, and the past few years have seen a resurgence in thrash metal. New bands have sprung up to emulate old ones, many of whom have reunited. Thus, At War's new album Infidel feels both retro and contemporary. The band's straight-ahead approach has not changed. Paul Arnold's vocals remain commanding and rhythmic. Shawn Helsel's guitars still blend Motörhead with German thrash. Dave Stone's drums have the surprising subtlety they had in the 1980s. The band even retained old-school thrash producer Alex Perialas for this record. He elicited the band's strongest performances to date. The band has never sounded so tight, nor has it ever had such big production. Such precision and cleanliness is slightly odd for a band known for its rawness. The sound has power, though, and reflects the realities of recording in a more technologically advanced time.

War requires an enemy. For At War, that has shifted from Communists to Muslim fundamentalists. The cover of Infidel depicts an eagle-tattooed man facing down an army of Jihadists. "Want You Dead" features a chorus of "They want you dead/ Kuffar die!/ They want you dead/ Open your eyes!" This is hardly diplomatic, but metal is not diplomatic music. Infidel is a strong statement. Agreement with it is up to the listener.

WIZRD: Formed Trondheim, Norway, 2018. Since then based in Oslo.

The band was originally envisioned at the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim by bassist and vocalist Hallvard GAARDLØS who enlisted the help of two of his fellow students at the Conservatory to form a band with a view to the trio performing at his graduating exam. The trio played several songs at the exam, including some which eventually ended up on the band's debut album.

Although formed as a guitar/bass/drums three-piece in early 2018, Vegard Lien BJERKAN joined on keys very soon after the band's initial formation, and the completed line-up consisted of four excellent musicians who were already members of other fine bands - such as Norwegian Jazz Fusionists SOFT FFOG, Rock'n'Roll powerhouse SPIDERGAWD, Jazz/Progressive Trio KROKOFANT, Hard Rock and Metal band DRAKEN and the Free Jazz outfit MEGALODON COLLECTIVE.

WIZRD's completed line-up in early 2018 was: Hallvard GAARDLØS (SPIDERGAWD, DRAKEN and more) on bass and lead vocals, Karl BJORÅ (MEGALODON COLLECTIVE and more) on guitar and vocals, Vegard Lien BJERKAN (SOFT FFOG and more) on keyboards and vocals and Axel SKALSTAD (KROKOFANT, SOFT FFOG and more) on drums.

The band eventually began working on their debut album in 2020, and the finished album was produced by Norwegian film score composer and Norwegian Alt-Jazz legends JAGA JAZZIST drummer Martin HORNTVETH, whom the various members of WIZRD had known for many years. The album was recorded at Studio Paradiso in Oslo, with HORNTVETH being assisted by Marcus FORSGREN (BROR FORSGREN, JAGA JAZZIST), and the mixing was done by Bergen-based musician and producer Matias TELLEZ (YOUNG DREAMS, GIRL IN RED).

With a classic Rock line-up of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals the quartet stylistically follows the traditions of the likes of CREAM, MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, WEATHER REPORT etc. in generating a sense urgency and energy without sacrificing attention to melody and dynamics. The band's intention from the very outset was to mix progressive and improvisational elements with rock & pop sensibilities.

The result was the groovy, catchy and progressive debut album 'Seasons', which was finally released on 21st October 2022 by Karisma Records - home to bands like WOBBLER and SEVEN IMPALE - and showcases how WIZRD are more than happy to test their limits with a sound that encompasses a variety of genres - ranging from Rock and Indie to Jazz and Prog. The album has been described as an exciting mix of guitar driven progressive rock, frenzied organ-fueled Classic Rock, captivating vocal harmonies, and Jazz Fusion excursions - all supported by a superb rhythm section.

Prior to the album's release in October 2022, a single 'Fire & Water' was released by Karisma Records on 29th September, for which band were lucky enough to have James PETRALLI from the band WHITE DENIM guesting on lead vocals. The band's choice of this single is notable for the fact that it's a song which marks the very beginning of WIZRD's existence, and provides an opportunity to trace the band's progression in terms of writing and concept from almost day one. Another single called 'Lessons' was released from the album a few weeks earlier by Karisma at the beginning of September 2022.

The band's line up has remained stable since its formation despite all the participants being involved in several other projects, and more recently in October 2023 - having already begun work on their next album - WIZRD and Karisma Records once again joined forces to release a cover of the seminal BLACK SABBATH track 'The Wizard'. This song was a part of WIZRD's setlist a few years back, when they played some shows where the audience could vote and choose in advance what kind of artists the band should cover.

Ekipa pod dowództwem Wojciecha Hoffmanna wraca po jedenastu latach milczenia. "Blizny" zapowiadał w ubiegłym roku singiel pt. "Nowy rozdział". Od lutego 2025 płyta dostępna jest na koncertach zespołu. W marcu wreszcie przyszedł czas na ogólnopolską premierę. Za mikrofonem tradycyjnie stanął Tomasz Struszczyk i to właśnie jego niesamowite partie wokalne są jednym z najjaśniejszych punktów płyty. Na płycie nie zabrakło gości specjalnych, między innymi Piotrka i Wojtka Cugowskich.

I saw this video in record shops some years ago in the VHS format, but I never bought it until now, available as DVD.
As "The Story of Supertramp So Far" (until 1990, when the video was made), it really is very brief in the information given about the history of the band: about 12 minutes from their period with Roger Hodgson (1969-83), and about 15 minutes from Hodgson`s departure until the split of the band in 1988. It also has some incorrect information: the first two albums of the band were not recorded by the original line-up, as the narrator says. So, in comparison to other "Video Biographie"s of other bands ("Yesyears" from YES and "Genesis- an History" by Genesis, both released in 1991), this video of Supertramp has very little information, but, a very good thing is that they included 11 complete songs from two concerts filmed during their last tour with Hodgson in 1983 (Toronto and Munich), which is the best part of the video (and the YES and Genesis videos, in comparison, only showed fragments of songs!). In general, all songs are played well, with the help of two guest musicians, Fred Mandel (keyboards, guitar) and a young Scott Page (saxophones, flute, guitar, vocals; years later he also played with Pink Floyd between 1987 and 1989). But as the previous reviewer wrote, most of the time the cameras are focused on Hodgson, Davies and Helliwell, and less time on Siebenberg, Thomson, and the guest musicians. But, at last I could see an official and profesionally filmed concert video of the band (I think that some of these songs were available to be seen in youtube.com some months ago; I remember seeing "Crime of the Century" there). There are some variations to previous live versions of these songs: Helliwell and Page share some sax solos; Page adds flute to one song; there are two guitars playing the solo in "Crime of the Century" (as in the original studio version). "Give a Little Bit" is played a bit faster than the studio version, and at last I could see a live version of "Goodbye Stranger" played with Hodgson. It is also good to see and hear Hodgson singing and playing his own songs in concert with Supertramp, and these live versions are, in my opinion, more "Genuine" than the live versions played by the band without Hodgson.

The DVD also includes five bonus video clips of the next songs:

-"My Kind of Lady": from the "...famous last words..." album, with the members of the band dressed as singers from the fifties. In this video is apparent for me that the split of Hodgson from the band was on the way, as the cameras are focused most of the time in Davies-Helliwell-Siebenberg-Thomson, and in the "backing band" scenes the four of them also appear, with Hodgson only briefly appearing playing the guitar.

-"Cannonball": a video clip of the edited single version of the song, with scenes of "Primitive Man and Woman" mixed with scenes of the band playing in an open air theatre (is it the Hollywood Bowl?).

-"Better Days": an interesting video clip with some political images and futuristic images of the world. Some politicians are also shown in this video.

-And two video clips from songs of the "Free as a Bird" album: "Free as a Bird" and "I`m Beggin` You". It seems that I`m one of the very few persons in this world who like this album, so I also liked both videoclips. The video for "Free as a Bird" shows the band doing a playback of the song with images of birds flying. "I^m Begging You" shows the members of the band filmed on the streets of one city (Los Angeles?) with some images of some women walking on the street too.

In conclusion, this is a good DVD, but maybe the main interest to release it for commercial purposes was to show the band playing in concert during 1983, more than being a long Documentary of the band with more detailed information of their history.So it works better as a concert video, in my opinion.

Amen Corner reaches the impressive milestone of seven Full-length, I've been following their releases for many years, but in Written by the Devil something would be different (and it was). Speaking about the past, Fall, Ascension, Domination from 1993 was a milestone and despite being an absolute classic, for me Iachol Ve Tehilá managed to climb the highest step in his discography, there are several reasons, but we will leave the details of this album for another opportunity, the EP from 1999 Darken in Quir Haresete closed the first phase (we can say it this way) establishing the name Amen Corner as a reference in Brazil. Only in 2007 with Lucification did they reappear, completely reformulated and with a sound that did not refer to the past, we can say that this work represented the second phase.

The triumphant return was with the excellent album Leviathan Destroyer, marking the return of Sucoth Benoth to his old home with his characteristic vocals. Chri$t Worldwide Corporation continued the saga with a high level of creation, it was an album that remained inside the cd-player for several days in a row, it came accompanied by a DVD with a documentary and historical recordings showing the great importance they had in Brazil. Under the Whip and the Crown came in the same four-year hiatus as the previous album, this is perhaps an album that lacked something, not musically speaking, but the impression I had is that they didn't elevate this work to the promotion it should have. This was something that was not lacking in this new work, Written by the Devil has inspired compositions, we can give the main merit to Murmúrio, the main composer since the early days, the album captivates from its intro followed by the powerful The War of the Antichrist, the third track The Protectors has a lyric that refer to an inspiration from King Diamond, interesting, lyric that differentiate from all the others. The fourth track Fall and Ascension is one of the most beautiful tracks ever composed by them, melancholic, sad, depressive, the guitar lines emerge all these feelings, having a rhythmic elevation at the end, a magnificent work in just over seven minutes, this track closes side A.

Signal from Beyond opens side B, it starts like the beginning of a nightmare, with Tenebrae Aarseth (drums) having a great highlight and importance in the change of pace of this track, ending once again with emphasis on the guitar lines, which walk in a disbelieving way followed by a saddened vocal. Next comes Inferno, which is one of the heaviest tracks on the album, followed by the title track, which ends up being another great highlight of this work, with precise breaks in the tempo, a fast and powerful chorus. The Splendor of Your Presence shows how competent Amen Corner is in creation, they transformed a relatively simple lyric into an excellent track, here we highlight Fernando Grommtt (bass), who was responsible for the composition, leaving his mark in the best way. Lúcifer, a Suprema Luz da Manhã closes the record, as we can infer, lyrics in Portuguese composed by Baal Seth Penitent (Torches of Nero), it is a prayer/narration with a perfect sound base to close this somewhat surprising album.

While many live only in the past, Amen Corner shows that the power of creation has not yet run out, after more than 30 years they managed to create one of the best albums in their history. Endless war, ideological wars!!!

Chri$t Worldwide Corporation continued the saga with a high level of creation, it was an album that remained inside the cd-player for several days in a row, it came accompanied by a DVD with a documentary and historical recordings showing the great importance they had in Brazil. Under the Whip and the Crown came in the same four-year hiatus as the previous album, this is perhaps an album that lacked something, not musically speaking, but the impression I had is that they didn't elevate this work to the promotion it should have. This was something that was not lacking in this new work, Written by the Devil has inspired compositions, we can give the main merit to Murmúrio, the main composer since the early days, the album captivates from its intro followed by the powerful The War of the Antichrist, the third track The Protectors has a lyric that refer to an inspiration from King Diamond, interesting, lyric that differentiate from all the others. The fourth track Fall and Ascension is one of the most beautiful tracks ever composed by them, melancholic, sad, depressive, the guitar lines emerge all these feelings, having a rhythmic elevation at the end, a magnificent work in just over seven minutes, this track closes side A.

Signal from Beyond opens side B, it starts like the beginning of a nightmare, with Tenebrae Aarseth (drums) having a great highlight and importance in the change of pace of this track, ending once again with emphasis on the guitar lines, which walk in a disbelieving way followed by a saddened vocal. Next comes Inferno, which is one of the heaviest tracks on the album, followed by the title track, which ends up being another great highlight of this work, with precise breaks in the tempo, a fast and powerful chorus. The Splendor of Your Presence shows how competent Amen Corner is in creation, they transformed a relatively simple lyric into an excellent track, here we highlight Fernando Grommtt (bass), who was responsible for the composition, leaving his mark in the best way. Lúcifer, a Suprema Luz da Manhã closes the record, as we can infer, lyrics in Portuguese composed by Baal Seth Penitent (Torches of Nero), it is a prayer/narration with a perfect sound base to close this somewhat surprising album.

While many live only in the past, Amen Corner shows that the power of creation has not yet run out, after more than 30 years they managed to create one of the best albums in their history. Endless war, ideological wars!!!
